Summer Pops Week 2013 22 to 26 July

Welcome

COMING SOON TO BUXTON OPERA HOUSE

…to our April to October 2013 season. As ever, there’s plenty to look out for: •

The summer Festival season again welcomes the Buxton Festival, Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, The Festival Fringe & the Buxton Puppet Festival

Late Spring highlights include a trio of operas from English Touring Opera, a return from Birmingham Royal Ballet, plus productions of Cadfael, Horrible Histories and The Firework-Maker’s Daughter, and three more productions from our own Young People’s Theatre Companies

Early Autumn highlights include A Murder Has Been Arranged, the smash-hit musical Buddy, Roald Dahl’s James & The Giant Peach and the first-ever tour of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap

We’re also delighted to give early news about our 2013 family pantomime, Cinderella and our popular New Year’s Eve Gala & Dinner – back for a third year

There’s also a host of famous names dropping in, from Jack Jones, Kate Rusby, The Hollies & Noddy Holder to Sean Lock, Andy Parsons, Jasper Carrott & Paul Merton, to name but a few!

For the young – and the not-so-young! – there’s always plenty to chose from in our Kaleidoscope Learning & Participation programme, on pages 4 & 5

But the biggest piece of news is our first ever Summer Pops Week, from Monday 22 to Friday 26 July, featuring: Folk behemoths Bellowhead (Mon) Rock legend Peter Hook playing New Order (Tues) A stunning Last Night of the Proms Summer Concert (Wed) Rock & blues legend Jack Bruce with his Big Band (Thurs) Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra (Fri)

They sound like five sell-out nights to me, so get your Summer Pops Week tickets early, before they all disappear! We’re looking forward to a brilliant 7 months ahead – see you there! Agatha Christie’s legendary, record-breaking, Box Office smash hit thriller celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Andrew Aughton, Chief Executive Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre

The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre – with over 25,000 performances, it’s a play to be proud of. And to celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, it’s going on tour for the first time, with a cast of much-loved TV names. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment, the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this masterpiece right here at Buxton Opera House. ‘The cleverest murder mystery in British Theatre’ – The Telegraph ‘A truly entertaining classic thriller’ – Sunday Times

The Council is also the owner of the Opera House & the Pavilion Arts Centre, and maintains the fabric of both buildings. The restoration & refurbishments of 1979, 2001 & 2007 were all partnership projects between Council and Trust, with significant funding from both.

Arts Council England has been a funder of the Opera House since 2003, making an annual grant towards our artistic costs, specifically the drama programme. ACKER BILK & HIS PARAMOUNT JAZZ BAND AND KENNY BALL’S JAZZMEN (FEATURING KEITH BALL)

Hull Truck brings to life the classic story of love, loss & redemption in an intriguing new adaptation of one of the great gothic novels, directed by Nick Lane (Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde).

Acker Bilk, synonymous with the famous bowler hat & waistcoat, formed his Paramount Jazz Band in 1956. They are still going strong, and promise the same musicianship & entertainment that helped them take the iconic Stranger On The Shore to No.1 in both the UK & USA in 1961. For more than 40 years the late Kenny Ball flew the flag for his particular brand of traditional jazz all over the world. Now the mantle has passed to his son Keith, who leads Kenny’s Jazzmen in the same sensational way as his father, one of the revered figures of 20th century British jazz. Another unforgettable evening in the company of two great trad jazz bands. Tickets: £17, £19 Discounts: Groups of 8 or more/Senior Citizens/Disabled: £1.75 off (not Dress Circle). THE SIEGE OF CALAIS BY DONIZETTI What is it that a citizen owes to his country? This is the question posed by this bel canto epic, which tells of the citizens of Calais, who offer their lives to save their city from a besieging army. COSÌ FAN TUTTE Opera House Monday 22 April 7.30pm Icarus Theatre Collective presents

SPRING AWAKENING Set in late 19th century Germany, this powerful production of Frank Wedekind’s classic play about becoming an adult follows a highly religious community with straight & gay teens exploring their furtive sexual awakenings. These young people push imposing boundaries as puberty overtakes them and their lives are changed forever. 15-year-old Melchior is chased out of town for acts of lewd & despicable moral character. But he’s the brightest boy in school & knows sex is just a natural act that ends in the beauty of childbirth. Wendla, 14-year-old girl-next-door, dies during an abortion thrust upon her by narrow-minded parents. Crushed by Wendla's death & persecuted by the authorities (& his parents) Melchior battles through purgatory where he confronts the ghosts of his past. This is a seminal play that attacks the oppressive culture of fin de siècle Germany and offers a vivid criticism of the erotic fantasies it breeds. Well ahead of its time, and with its careful negotiation of teenage pregnancy, homosexuality & religion, it remains bold, challenging and thoughtful today. Contains nudity & adult scenes. For ages 14 & over. Free after-show Q&A with the company in the Stalls. Banned in the UK for 50 years when first written, Miss Julie shocked critics across Europe with its frank portrayal of sexuality & inter-class relationships. Now widely regarded as Strindberg’s masterpiece, its vivid depiction of the class system is still as pertinent today. UK Touring presents the world premiere of an exciting new English translation for the 21st century, developed as part of Strindberg 2012 (the centenary of his death in 1912). Suitable for ages 14 & over.

THE GRAND TOUR

TAKE FIVE

DIVERTS

(Choreography: Joe Layton. Music: Noel Coward)

(Choreography: David Bintley. Music: The Dave Brubeck Quartet)

Including excerpt from Giselle, Act 2

All aboard for the roaring 20s! Setting out on a cruise to Europe, a doughty American spinster can't believe her luck when she finds herself in the company of a host of famous faces. However, it turns out that Noël Coward, Gertrude Stein & George Bernard Shaw, to name but a few, aren't necessarily the friendliest of shipmates. Add stowaways & a rather handsome chief steward into the mix & things start to get a little… complicated!

In homage to one of David Bintley’s heroes, he created this sexy & energetic series of vignettes to some of Brubeck’s most famous tracks, including Take Five and Unsquare Dance.

To complete this wonderful programme the company will perform some of its favourite moments from some of its most popular ballets, including Giselle. Check their website (brb.org.uk) for further details.

THE GOLDEN PRINCESS Melo, the strange, one legged musician, sits alone by the sea, content in his world and playing the most beautiful music. Suddenly, a golden carriage passes by, bearing a princess so beautiful that she wears a golden mask to hide her blinding beauty. And she pushes him in the mud! What kind of a world is this, where one who hides her beauty behaves so badly to the one with beauty at his fingertips? It is the Land of Rumours, of course – where the first idea or impression spreads like a wildfire of whispers, distorting the truth and spreading discontent. Lempen make a welcome return visit to Buxton’s Puppet Festival with a performance using acting, puppets, shadows and music for everyone from 5 to 105! ‘What a lovely show, very touching’ – Theatre by the Lake, Keswick For children aged 5 & over. BELLOWHEAD Bigger, bolder, brassier and more brazen than ever, Bellowhead won Best Album for Broadside at the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and their previous album Hedonism was the highest-selling independently released traditional folk album of all time. There’s not a great deal more to say, but we’ll try… The story of Bellowhead is an amazing one: in 2004 a disparate group of pub session musicians thought it might be a good wheeze to pool their varied backgrounds, talents and sounds (brass, strings, squeezebox, percussion and anything else that seemed like a good idea at the time) and form a big band – just to see what happened. Four albums, a glut of awards, sell-out tours and a long trail of thunderous festival appearances down the line, this gung-ho 11-piece line-up has transported folk music into hitherto unknown territory, introducing a whole new audience to it with them. ‘Explosive, vivid, wild & rhythmic’ – Evening Standard Tickets: £24, £26 No discounts

SUMMER 2013 OUTDOOR THEATRE IN THE PAVILION GARDENS In Padua, two wealthy sisters need to be married off. The modest, demure Bianca has no shortage of suitors, but who on earth will take the wild, ungovernable ‘shrewish’ Katherina? Performing on an Elizabethan-style stage, a small troupe of travelling players breathes new life into Shakespeare’s outrageous comedy. IMPROBABLE FICTION By Alan Ayckbourn Six aspiring authors meet on a winter’s evening to discuss their work…writers of romances and children’s literature who are struggling to start, a crime writer who can’t stop, plus a creator of science fiction, a librettist without a musical partner and the Writers’ Circle chairman, who produces instruction booklets. Before long, their various stories start to interweave, and it gets difficult to distinguish fiction from real life… Sharp comedy and affectionate satire characterise this zany, imaginative play, which premiered at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough in 2005 and toured nationally the following year.

COLIN FRY

KATE RUSBY

Back in Buxton for the third time, and always a popular visitor with audiences who enjoy the best in mediumship, Colin Fry – of television’s Sixth Sense, Psychic Private Eyes, The Three Mediums and Colin Fry Live fame – is one of the most celebrated psychic mediums in the UK today. Don’t miss him as he delivers messages of love and comfort in his brand new show.

Of all the stars in the folk music firmament, few shine as brightly as Yorkshire’s Kate Rusby. A remarkable interpretive singer, her soulful vocals resonate with wistful beauty. Inhabiting a lyric with unforced conviction – no matter how old or how modern – she has that rare ability to transport her audience, of touching them emotionally and making each tune live vividly within their experience and imagination.

Be stunned by Colin’s breathtaking accuracy and compassion in this all-new show, as he conducts an evening of intimate communication with your loved ones.

The crossover appeal Kate enjoys is unprecedented for a folk singer and has been achieved without resort to compromise. Rusby’s wondrous singing and hugely engaging Yorkshire wit and the intuitive support of her band, drawn from the cream of British folk musicians, ensure that her audiences are treated to a truly unforgettable concert experience.

We are asked to point out that evenings of mediumship are not scientifically proven and are presented for education and entertainment purposes only.

ROY ‘CHUBBY’ BROWN

Following in the footsteps of the world-famous Moulin Rouge and Follies Bergere, French Can Can is a critically acclaimed spectacular that celebrates the elegance of Paris and the high-kicking glamour of the city’s most famous dance routine! The show recreates the bohemian world of Toulouse-Lautrec as the perfect backdrop for this lavish musical adventure, featuring an international cast of beautiful and talented dancers and music hall performers with glittering stage sets and over sixty hand-crafted costumes, all played out against the sound of Offenbach's famous Can Can melody, combined with a beautifully romantic Parisian score.

He’s still rude, he’s still crude and this time he’s turning headlines into punch lines as his rip-roaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across the country. Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing his outlandish views – sailing so close to the wind that even the most seasoned of fans will be left gobsmacked! As politically incorrect as ever ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is far too rude for TV, so this live performance is the only place to catch him in his natural environment. The show contains strong language and adult material. If easily offended please stay away!

The French Can Can dancers perform the breathtaking traditional choreography as well as dazzling new dance routines created especially for this production. In true French burlesque tradition, the performance delivers style, energy and that certain je ne sais quoi! GHOSTS By Henrik Ibsen From the company who brought you A Taste Of Honey and Lord of the Flies. Helen Alving is trapped in a world where the ‘dead ideas’ preached by Pastor Manders rule outright, and her own family’s insidious legacy threatens scandal. She is desperately trying to conceal her husband’s philandering past by building an orphanage in his name, under the pastor’s guiding hand. But the celebrated return of her estranged son Oswald brings Helen’s ghosts back to haunt her, and all hopes of success are reduced to ashes. Though penned in 1881, it is not hard for us to see the parallels in our own society of today: the pious leaders of the past replaced with our own custodians of the status quo, and money their new religion. For ages 10 & over. SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE: Contact participation@boh.org.uk or 01298 72050

MARTIN CARTHY & DAVE SWARBRICK Opera House Tuesday 1 October 7.30pm

GOTTA SING, GOTTA DANCE

68

For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers from both inside and beyond the folk scene. Dave Swarbrick first came to prominence as a young instrumental virtuoso in the Ian Campbell Folk Group. Having worked alongside other musicians such as Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, Beryl and Roger Marriott and A. L. Lloyd, he teamed up with Martin Carthy in 1966. This remarkable pairing played an important part in the shake-up of British folk music in the mid to late 60s. Their experienced approach to their art lacks none of the fervour of their early days, and brings a maturity born of many years living with the music that is an integral part of their beings.

The long-awaited return of the spectacular song & dance extravaganza that rocked Buxton in 2009. A top West End cast and superb live band stop the show with numbers from Chicago, Singin’ In The Rain, Les Miserables, Oliver, Hairspray and many many more!

‘Carthy is arguably the greatest English folk song performer of them all!’ – Q Magazine

‘Two and a half hours of pure delight’ – Whats On Stage

‘Swarbrick is a revelation, as instinctively sympathetic and wickedly inspirational as he ever was’ – fRoots

Directed by Ellen Kent, and starring international soloists, this brand new production of the grandest of all operas brings the dusty plains and dramatic grandeur of ancient Egypt to the stage in Verdi’s classic tale of war, jealousy and revenge, at whose heart is the doomed love of the beautiful Ethiopian slave girl, Aida, and the Egyptian hero, Radames. THE NIGHTINGALE OF SOUTH BANK Florence Easton was born in 1882 in Middlesbrough. After training at the Royal Academy at the turn of the 20th century, she went on to become one of the most versatile English opera singers & became known professionally as ‘The Nightingale of South Bank’. Florence settled in America after the start of WW 1 & was famous for her ability to take an unknown part at short notice & perform it flawlessly in public the same day. In 1918, at the Metropolitan Opera, NYC, she created the role of Lauretta in the world premiere of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, making her the first soprano ever to sing the famous aria O Mio Babbino Caro. Helena Leonard sings many of Florence’s famous arias from operas including Madame Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi, Aida, Tosca & many more as she tells you the story of the fascinating career of Florence Easton.

THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO Based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. Adapted for the stage by Polis Loizou. Three jealous conspirators falsely imprison Edmund Dantès in an impenetrable fortress, the infamous Château D’if. A lifetime of isolation awaits the once proud merchant sailor, but a chance escape quenches Edmund’s thirst for vengeance. The hero is now the villain, & will have his revenge. After sell-out success & three award nominations at the Buxton Fringe for their critically-acclaimed Hyde, Thunder Road return with a mesmerising new adaptation of Dumas’ swashbuckling classic. ‘Astonishing’ – Manchester Evening News (of Hyde) Tickets: £6.50 (Discounts: £1 off)
