Yorgos Karamihos is an actor, director and acting professor as well as father of two children. Born and raised in Greece he lives in Los Angeles and spends big chunks of the year in Europe filming. He graduated the history department of the Ionian University in Corfu and the Greek National Theatre Acting Academy in Athens. He also received a Fulbright scholarship as an exceptional artist and studied at the Stella Adler Academy for Theatre and Acting in Los Angeles where later on he accepted the invitation to become a member of its faculty teaching his own technique based on Ancient Greek tragedy and comedy. He has worked as an actor in more that 50 theatre productions and 30 films as well as in more than a dozen of TV series. He currently appears as a regular character in The Durrells (ITV/PBS) and his recent works include Ben Her, NCIS Love is… etc.

Running in Filopappou park and Pnix right underneath and across from Acropolis hill in the center of Athens might sound picturesque but it is much more than that. First of all I need to explain that I am not a professional runner, to be honest I just started running a couple of years ago. Some twenty years ago I had two back surgeries trying to rescue a slipping disk and the doctors had forbidden me to run, horse ride, sword fight, any sort of weight lifting including lifting my own kids or suitcase and any action that involved “extreme” muscular use apart from swimming. And all that for the rest of my life. It was obvious doctors were not good for me. So after a few years of dealing with pain and fear and after having tried all the alternative healing techniques such as Reiki, Aura Soma, Pilates, Fascia, Kinesiology, Dreaming and Wishing I started doing again all those things that I was born and used to do before the surgeries. My last achievement was running. Not much and not long. I do between 8 and 15 Kilometers between 5 and 10 times per month.

Back to Filopappou Park in Acropolis, Athens… Running in such a spiritual and historically important place is the ultimate pleasure and inner journey. Knowing that Socrates, Plato and Aristotle used to wander about these hills exploring the dynamics of art, love, science and emotions becomes a nice boost and inspiration for your trip. And what a view! Your eyes can’t get enough of the diversity of images and senses. The vegetation in the park is exquisite including indigenous plants such as olive, pine and cypress trees and others that were brought from Germany by king Otto after the liberation from the Ottoman empire. The view is beyond stunning. Parthenon on the top of Acropolis hill stands like a gorgeous time-worn white knight guarding the immense city of Athens that lies underneath with the ugly grey buildings playing games with their beautiful relatives, the classic and modern architectural achievements hand in hand with some colorful houses with blossoming gardens. On the south side of the park the Aegean Sea promises beautiful sunset shades of blue, purple and red. The islands of Aegina, Agistri and Salamis are floating still looking sometimes like paradise lands and others like melancholic Ophelias. And the time runs faster than you. You can only keep on transferring your body’s weight from one leg to the other and letting your senses absorb the impressions of a blessed landscape. Running becomes emotional landscaping.

The City The Most Exciting City in the World

I

I feel blessed and lucky to have been born and raised in a south suburb of Athens, a 100m from the sea. My memories are careless, full of sun and happiness; diving in the blue water of the Athenian coastline from May till October, riding the bicycle and hanging out with my friends in the safe streets of our suburb and enjoying the hospitality of the neighbors. We all knew each other and doors were always open. Since then a lot has changed, but a lot has remained the same. The sea is still as beautiful and inviting as it was back then. The hospitality and the carelessness are still strong elements of the Greek culture. The bright, warm sun still greets you most mornings of the year. Since then I have definitely changed. I started seeing Athens for the city it really is. A city where chaos can be overwhelming but keeps you always alert and interested, like a lover. Its beauty is hidden, one must look beyond the obvious. Its contradictions make it unconventional. Athens is not apologetic. Has no problem showing its unpolished side, Athens is proud of its troubled recent history. The old and the new, the ugly and the beautiful, the oriental and the western, the folklore and the contemporary all blend together in a unique way. All under the Athenian sun, all protected by the goddess Athena. Afterall Athens is a strong Greek headed woman. My favorite routine in Athens is to walk from Syntagma Square to the bottom of the Acropolis Hill, through the little streets of Plaka and passed the Acropolis Museum, just under the Parthenon. That’s where I dream, where I get my inspiration and my strength. Strolling in the center of Athens is a treat to the senses. Streets are busy, coffee shops are full of people, music is loud, delicious street food can be found in every other corner, the spice market adds an oriental touch, graffiti everywhere, naïve tourists looking lost, locals having a beer under the sun, business men with suits running to fit everything in their schedu-

les, mothers with babies strolling peacefully. Athens is very democratic in a way, everything is accessible. It kind of makes sense, since Democracy was born here. All I need is my curiosity, my senses to be alert and an open mind. To enjoy Athens I let go of my preconceptions and pre manufactured ideas. To enjoy Athens the most I climb the rock of Acropolis at sunset, walk around the Parthenon, sit on the ancient marbles and take a long breath in. It is a lot to digest. But somehow, Athens looks beautiful from up there, life seems simple and I feel full of power and thirst for life!

The City The Most Exciting City in the World

Sometimes I think that my true concept of social equality is that the maximum percentage of people live surrounded by interesting beauty. According to this idea, the most egalitarian capital of the world is Berlin. I have been able to see how people of all types, from millionaire art collectors to workshop workers and students ... I have noticed that almost everyone saw beauty from the time they got up until they went to bed. Windows to suggestive patios, portals with personality, paths to work by parks, water in all formats, ponds, rivers, canals, and art from all corners. I’m not objective, it’s my kind of beauty. I was part of the generation of artists who made Berlin an outdoor art gallery and I feel at home pedaling, running or walking through any of its corners. The city has such a number of ideas in its atmosphere that monuments as none. The infinite weight of history and its forcefulness make two bricks placed with criteria in an ethical and aesthetic statement. Everything has a deep meaning, but since Christo and Jeanne Claude wrapped cloth in the Reichstag in 1995 the city bet like none before by contemporary art. In the cafés, in the courtyards - the höffe are possibly the most fascinating places of Berlin - on the sidewalks or the ruins appear installations, literature, painting, sculpture, cinema and music that mix the memory “Denkmal” with the most radical future. Berlin has everything that makes me happy. That character of a city in process, in which there is much to do and open to the participation of anyone who wants to be part of it. In some ways it is the New York of Europe. On the one hand the city has a very strong identity and on the other, each district is conceived as a whole, with its town hall, its markets, museums, monuments and pride. unning for me is an escape. When I run I can escape the impressions and impulses of the city and remember the beat of my pulse. Running is my cleaning program, through which I can shuffle off the thoughts I don’t need any more and the little everyday life charges.

When I started running 10 years ago I was still living in a small town on the country side and my runs would lead me through the forest, passing apple trees and along the river. Now I live in Berlin and from time to time I miss that river. Berlin is everything, all the time. For me there is no city that confronts you more relentlessly with diversity and that in so many ways and situations. And this is also what I love most about the city. One of my good friends here who is from Egypt once said to me that He loves it because he doesn’t feel like a minority because everyone is a minority in Berlin. And it is true. Berlin allows you to be whoever you want to be. However, it is not what I would call a nice or beautiful city. Instead it is loud and overwhelming and unsparingly honest. I you don’t search for your private safe havens within the city every once in a while, it can easily become too much.

And even though Volkspark Friedrichshain in a way offers the whole diversity a park could offer as well, it is one of my safe havens. When I go for a run here in the mornings I pass the other runners, that stop to do their pullups or pushups. I see the dog owners, slackliners and the parents pushing the buggies towards the playgrounds, while admiring each others’ offspring. But my favourite part is to run up the „großen Brunckerberg“. The Bunckerberg is the highest elevation in Friedrichshain. Under the abrasive cobblestones, which lead you up to the top, lies the remnants of the two flak towers of Friedrichshain. Today nothing would remind you of them due to the big trees growing on the Bunckerberg. When I run up that hill, it can happen that for a moment I forget that I am in the city because all you see are those trees. It is especially beautiful in the fall, when the leaves are colored and fall down on the path. Only on the top of Bunckerberg you are reminded that you are in the middle of one of the most exciting cities of Europe by the view over the park and the Fernsehturm. When I run back down the path, step by step back into the realities of the city, passing the fairytale fountain and noticing the yellow tram next to the park, I can feel every time how I am reconciled with the city and all its faces again.

The City The Most Exciting City in the World

S

I remember as a teenager during a lazy L.A. summer some friends and I attempted to see if we could drive to the beach, the desert and the mountains all in one day. We did it with time to spare and rewarded ourselves with a midnight burrito. Where else can you do that? For years I’ve tried to leave L.A. and set up camp in a new city and a few times in a new country but there is always something that brings me back or keeps me put. It could be for work, the possibility of romance or just the comfort of easy living. I think I will always be drawn to it and I should give up trying to escape. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t born in L.A. just so I can experience it new, with fresh eyes. I want to feel that sense of endless potential that I get from recent transplants or that feeling of gratitude for the amazing weather. I want to see what people see when they say -This place is ridiculous. There is a cliché about Los Angeles not having a city center and it’s true. L.A. has no point of entry, it doesn’t welcome you with open arms, it doesn’t tell you where to start and it doesn’t owe you anything. It’s fairly rare to simply stumble onto something, someplace or someone. You have to be intrepid and diligent, you have to make the effort and get out there. Mostly you also have to stay loose and adventurous enough to enjoy the randomness and variety it throws at you because there’s a lot of it. When you visit or decide to move here just remember that all of the stereotypes are true. But what did you expect? That’s what makes it great. It’s glamorous and dirty all at the same time. It’s elegantly cheap and trashy. It keeps it real in how fake it is and adamant about its contradictions. It has a short memory and will reward you greatly if you deserve it but mostly when you don’t. It’s

frustrating and it’s sometimes mean. But it will always be there, relaxing in the sun with or without you – just taking it easy. I think a friend of mine summed it up for me when she said “I hate that I love it here.”

BUCKY FUKUMOTO is a filmmaker and graphic designer born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Known as a fruit basket of creativity, Bucky is most commended for his work with British pop-icon Morrissey after helming six music videos and two feature length concert films. Besides working with other musicians such as Peaches and super group Audioslave, Bucky has worked with athletes and sports personalities such as Shaquille O’neal and Tiger Woods as well as Boston Celtics Rajon Rondo and most recently F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen. His filmmaking is primarily in live action but is also known for work in animation and motion graphics as well as creating some influential visual effects. As an art director and graphic designer for the Girl and Chocolate Skateboard companies he created graphics for decks and apparel. It’s here that he worked with Girl and Chocolate co-owner Spike Jonze on a variety of skate films produced by the company. This led him to collaborative work with Roman Coppola and The Directors Bureau. He has also worked with the iconic street fashion brand X-Large, artist Geoff McFetridge and continues to work as a designer today, most recently re-branding the Pestoni Family Winery as well as creating labels and advertisements. He currently splits his time between Calistoga in Northern California and Los Angeles and is working on perfecting the ultimate mid-day nap or as he refers to it – subconscious research.

The expert Yorgos Karamihos Actor, director and acting professor as well as father of two children.

Running in Griffith Park in the heart of Los Angeles might sound glamorous but it’s actually much more than that. Back to Griffith Park… The first thing you realize facing the

park is that running will not be easy. The slopes of Hollywood Hills can become quite slippery especially during summer time when dry dirt and gravel love to play games with your running shoes. In some cases they are so steep that you have to grab branches or roots of trees and bushes if you don’t want to roll all the way back to the safe playground of the park’s entrance. You also have to be very careful not to get lost. It sounds strange how could anyone get lost in the center of a big city but Griffith park is very big and the uneven mountain and hills create perplexing illusions. I got lost once and fortunately enough my dog that run by my side had more trained nose and instincts than me and after an hour of wandering in the unknown he led us back to the roots of the mountain. Once you overcome the initial obstacles, all the rest is pleasure. Your eyes can’t get enough of the diversity of images and senses. The flora and fauna in the park is exquisite including plants familiar and completely unknown to a European eye, temperamental animals that need some extra attention such as deer, coyotes, hummingbirds, possums, predator birds and rattlesnakes. The view is beyond stunning. The observatory on the top of the hills stands like a gorgeous white round knight guarding the immense city of Los Angeles that lies underneath with the tall skyscrapers, colorful buildings and gardens full of flowers and quite extreme some times decoration and on the west side the Pacific Ocean promises beautiful sunsets. And the time runs faster than you. You can only keep on transferring your body’s weight from one leg to the other and letting your senses absorb the impressions of a blessed landscape. Running becomes emotional landscaping. kiosk next to the Fred Lebow statue at the East 90th Street entrance. Lebow, a runner and longtime president of the New York Road Runners club, founded the New York City marathon and last ran it in 1992, in celebration of his 60th birthday, after he had been diagnosed with brain cancer. He died in 1994.

No mucho y no mucho.

Her, NCIS Love is ... etc. Regresar a Griffith Park ...

unny as it sounds the last play I staged in Rome was called Maratona di New York by Edoardo Erba, a story about two long time friends training for a marathon while they talk about their hopes, regrets and life’s meaning. In order to physically sustain this herculean effort I started a training regime that included running four times a week either in Villa Ada or Villa Doria Pamphili, two of Rome’s biggest parks, while I was rehearsing my lines.

Although I am half German, I am what they call a “Romano de Roma” (true Roman). I was born and raised in the heart of ancient Rome, the Suburra, thus feeling a strong connection to the cities history. It’s a privilege to wake up every morning, walk through the Forum Romanum, around the Colosseum and enjoy a fresh espresso while eating my favorite cornetto integrale al miele at the Pantheon. One of my favorite things to do is to get lost in the streets. Walk and allow myself to be surprised. Or drink a Negroni while eating an Amatriciana in Trastevere. Every corner in Rome is filled with history; every stone has its story to tell, ready to be discovered. After 28 years as a Roman, I am still overwhelmed by the cities hidden gems. Like the keyhole at the Giardino degli Aranci, where I used to take my girlfriends as a teenager. Or the Gianicolo at night, where the moon shines on a field of domes, allowing them to sparkle like dimonds. Antonello Venditti’s song Roma Capoccia is a love letter to Rome, nobody better than him describes what it feels to be in the eternal city:

Ah, quanto sei bella. he best point to start a racing session inside Villa Borghese is represented by Giardino del Lago. There, beyond the arch of Settimio Severo, we find ourselves on our left the famous pond and, before us, the dirt road of Viale of the Orange that will crank the ankles during our first steps. The public use of Villa Borghese dates back to the early 1800’s and is due to Camillo Borghese, who was the husband of Paolina Bonaparte, the sister of the famous Emperor. Exit from the Garden of Lake, take our left and, going uphill we find ourselves from the parts of Piazza di Siena, which each year in May hosts a well-known horse race. At this point we decide to point straight to the Borghese Gallery, which among the many artistic pearls houses some paintings by Caravaggio and lovely statues by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Let’s just skip the jump once we’ve put off the racing garments, at this point we put the Gallery back and head to the House of Cinema. Even in this case the road is steadily going up, but moreover, you know, Rome was built on the Seven Hills. Greeted by Marcello Mastroianni, who stands on the square opposite the Casa del Cinema, it’s time to go downhill with Pincio, the most impressive place to finish the race. To avoid the kick, our arrival will be located on Avenue of the Belvedere. From here one enjoys one of the most suggestive views of Rome, the ideal place to rejuvenate body and spirit.
