hange happens. Bossier City has a new mayor. Vacations are winding down and school is starting up. It’s the end of summer jobs and the beginning of fall sports. Couples are turning engagements into marriages. And none of us know how this pandemic will play out.
Speaking of change, you can read a Q&A with Mayor Tommy Chandler for insight into his proposed goals and plans. If you’re looking to make personal changes, we have wellness tips.
Change can bring on varying degrees of emotion, especially for parents dropping off a preschooler for the first time, or watching the disappearing taillights of a child headed to college. The same goes for parents seeing their children wed, hopeful for a happy and prosperous future. This issue includes two special sections: Weddings and Back to School. We hope you will find inside some ideas and businesses to help you on the journey. Enjoy the change of seasons and embrace every stage of life. As the saying goes, “the days are long, but the years are short.”

he following story is true, and it is unapologetically biased. It is predisposed to an overwhelming sense of pride, respect, and astonishment. This is a story about perseverance, fortitude, faith, and optimism. This story is about my amazing husband, Byron May.
It began with a twitch in his back. Actually, it was more than a twitch. He bent over to tie his bootlaces in preparation for a cold morning of duck hunting in south Louisiana. Byron couldn’t stand up straight after that and after several months of nagging back pain (and a nagging wife), he was forced to see a doctor. With golf tournament season right around the corner, Byron was eager to get his back in better condition. He decided on a surgical procedure that didn’t go well. Three surgeries later and he was still in pain so intense he thought he would lose his mind. He experienced depres-

sion which often accompanies chronic pain and, in his case, a lack of golf. We knew he needed a distraction. Byron had dabbled in art in high school and his work in the printing business kept him in close contact with graphic design and knowledge of color and how they reacted in the printing process. It was typical for his pressmen to mix colors on metal printing plates. He watched one of the guys mixing up a color with some interesting results. Byron began experimenting with colors using a palette knife instead of a paint brush, left-over plates instead of stretched canvas and an unlimited imagination instead of a printed piece. It took a few chemical adjustments to the paint with lots of trial and error before he landed on a combination that pleased him. It was this recipe, that can be tweaked to obtain specific results, that makes his art unique. Bold colors are seemingly smeared across the metal to create contemporary art that is refreshingly different. Sometimes smooth in texture, other times wrinkled depending upon how the paint is mixed and sometimes a little of both in the same piece. The reaction from people when they view his art with 3-dimensional glasses is almost always the same. There is an audible gasp and then an elongated “wow!” How does this work? I like to say, “It’s magic!” Byron is quick to correct me by explaining that the steel reflects the light and it’s the light that opens the layers of color. You can look through a pair of 3-D glasses and the entire painting changes. Each piece takes on a life of its own and can change from angle to angle. No two pieces are alike and sometimes, one piece can look different each time you study it anew. SBMAG.NET

2013. In 2015, Byron got a call from an old classmate who had gone on to build office complexes in Texas. He had heard about Byron’s endeavors in the art world and loved what he saw on Byron’s website. He commissioned a large body of work for his company, the Tiet-Reit Asset Management Group. Fifteen large pieces now hang in the lobbies of One and Two Briar Lake Plaza office buildings in west Houston. He has also done many pieces for collectors’ homes.
Byron opened his first solo exhibition at The Gallery of Fine Arts in Louisiana in 2010, and since that time has shown his work at The Arlington Museum of Art as well as The Brunner Galleries of Louisiana in Covington, Louisiana. His art has taken us to The Oh My Goddard Gallery in Las Vegas, The Rostad Edwards Gallery in Miami, and The International Art Gallery in San Francisco. He has also been a featured artist at AO5 Gallery in Austin since
When I think back at all Byron has had to endure – the surgeries, the loss of his beloved game of golf, falling from being a competitive scratch golfer and having to sit on the sidelines for so long – so many doors closed shut for him. Most people would have just given up hope. But God had other plans and throwing in the towel is not in Byron’s makeup. A whole new world of creativity and beauty opened for him and for everyone who has had the opportunity to see his work. I’ll stop bragging now and invite all of you to Byron’s long-awaited exhibition at Artspace in downtown Shreveport on Friday, August 27, from 5:30 to 9:00 PM. “ABSTRACTIONS ON STEEL” is free. We look forward to meeting you there. Visit www.artspaceshreveport.com or www.shrevearts.org for more information on the exhibit. byronmayart.com

Ascension Classical School
God is doing a great and new work in south Shreveport. Ascension Classical School, which started in 2014, invites you to come and experience the wonderful growth of the school. In the past two years, Ascension has moved into a new building on the corner of Southern Loop and Norris Ferry, expanded through 7th grade and hired Dr. Timothy Kovalcik as the new Head of School. Dr. Kovalcik comes with over twenty years of experience in higher education as a university professor and pastor. Ascension is building a unique brand of education that develops not only skills, but also character. It is a new and wonderful season at Ascension! You do not want to miss it! The Classical Difference: Ascension Classical School is built on the principles of Classical Christian education. Classical education is the restoration and preservation of true education as once recognized by Western Civilization. Classical education is a comprehensive plan that shapes the character and spirit of a student as preparation for all of life, not just a career. The Christian focus helps each individual pupil shape their “heart, soul and mind” for a life of love and service. The Classical focus embraces the liberal arts and teaches the great works of literature, history, art, music, philosophy, math, and science. Through the great books and conversations with the past, a student learns how to think, not just what to think. Join us! To schedule a tour and experience for yourself the Classical difference contact Dr. Timothy Kovalcik, headofschool@ascensionclassicalschool.org, 318-9468089. ascensionclassicalschool.org

First Baptist Church School is a Preschool Young K3 through 8th Grade school, which is a mission of First Baptist Church of Shreveport, but operates independently. Founded in 1970, FBCS has a rich tradition of providing excellent academics in a Christian environment. The school now serves 420 students. Our vision states: “First Baptist Church School strives to produce a generation of confident and self-directed lifelong learners with the strong academic discipline, technological skills, and personal faith necessary to realize their potential in God’s world.” To achieve this vision, our instruction at all levels is challenging, enriching, and differentiated for all types of learners. The academic instruction students receive is preparing them for the next phase of their education and their lives. Also, FBCS offers pull-out programs during the school day for gifted students, students with language disabilities (dyslexia), and those needing general academic support. The curriculum we utilize is based on national standards in Education. We reflect often on our teaching practices and make changes based on our students’ needs to ensure supplements are strategically implemented to improve instruction. Technology, handson activities, and manipulatives are highly utilized to support the instruction at every level. In addition to the core-subject curriculum, students enjoy a variety of enrichment classes, including Bible study every day and Chapel weekly. With caring, experienced teachers as role models and instructors, and a seasoned administration, First Baptist Church School provides students an experience that is not only academic, but that focuses on their development in all aspects of their lives. newsite.fbcschool.org

St. John Berchmans Catholic School
Starting off the year running, St. John’s is led by its new principal, Trey Woodham, to take the helm and steer it in the right direction. He not only has been an instrumental part in their novel LSUS and SJB partnership, but he has also worked behind the scenes to bring a new website and marketing plan
into the fray. In terms of schooling itself, LSUS and SJB have partnered together to bring higher education enrichments into the middle school classrooms once school begins which will allow students to be taught humanities by LSUS college professors. Not only that, the middle school has now just adopted a block schedule to give its students credits for high school, before they even start it. Additionally, SJB, alongside the staff of St. John Berchmans Cathedral, will be celebrating the 400th anniversary of their namesake patron saint, St. John Berchmans, through various activities for their students and parishioners from August 13, 2021, to November 26, 2022. Finally, the school building is being improved to bring about a fresher, more refined, look. Landscaping projects are in the works on the North and East side of the building, classrooms are being remodeled one by one, and the school is aiming to produce a pre-COVID environment. Furthermore, SJB has invested in CASPR (Continuous Air and Surface Pathogen Reduction), a patent-pending air and surface disinfection solution whichi continuously destroys harmful molds, bacteria such as staph and MRSA, and viruses – even the virus that causes COVID-19. sjbcathedralschool.org

Long, may not be driving our students to school, some things remain the same. First and foremost, we live out our motto daily: Academic Excellence Surrounded by Faith. St. Joseph strives to provide students who come through these doors with an education that nurtures who they are now while preparing them for the next level. St. Joseph does so through a rigorous academic program, keeping students on track to flourish. Our teachers work diligently to encourage our students to become who God our Father created them to be, saints now and in eternity. At St. Joseph, we strive every day to teach virtue to our students so that good habits will have a positive impact in their families, the Church, and our local community. For almost 25 years, the Renzi Education and Art Center has been a safe haven and source of inspiration for hundreds of local at-risk children. The mission of the Renzi Education and Art Center is to provide free, high-quality, after-school academic and art classes and summer camp to K-12 youth in the Shreveport-Bossier area, so that all children have the opportunity to explore, learn, and create, under the guidance of professional teachers and artists. Located on Egan Street in Shreveport’s historic Highland neighborhood, Renzi was started in 1997 by The Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. They transformed an old Craftsman Bungalow into a welcoming environment for kids in the Highland and Stoner Hill neighborhoods to spend their time when school was not in session. The walls, rooms, and hallways are covered with artwork from students and local artists to inspire everyone who enters their doors.
The program can accept a maximum of 60 children per session though enrollment size has been adjusted due to COVID-19. The Renzi after-school program is offered throughout the school year and closely follows the Caddo Parish school calendar. Renzi focuses on each child’s academic growth as well as providing them with the opportunity to explore themselves creatively through various artistic mediums. In 2000, Renzi acquired the property next door to their original location and expanded their reach. With the two homes connected by a colorful covered walkway, the original house is where art classes are held while the newer house is where the academic classes are held.
During the after-school program’s four 7-week sessions, the children take two 25-minute academic classes and one 50-minute art class. Certified and experienced educators and artists teach each class. Enrolled children are offered academic classes such as Math, Reading, Spanish, Computers, Nutrition, Cooking, or Language Arts. The variety of art class topics, which are based on student interest, include mediums such as Papier-mâché, Painting, Creative Writing, Photography, Cartooning, Drawing, and Graphic Design. Since 2019, Executive Director Cassandra Key has worked diligently to be an effective leader for Renzi Education and Art Center. Her passion for Renzi and its future is unmatched. “I envision Renzi being around for another 25 years! I hope to expand our program in the near future, offering more performing arts classes and music classes to children all over Shreveport-Bossier and increasing our enrollment, so we can serve more children,” she says. With the help of our community, that bright future is undoubtedly possible. The Renzi Education and Arts Center uplifts impressionable minds through the help of grants and community donations. Renzi will use funds from their largest annual fundraiser, the Bunco Bash & Silent Auction coming up in October, to expand services and increase enrollment. This fundraiser helps to fund operating expenses for the after-school program. The Renzi Education and Art Center is more than just an after-school program; it’s the foundation for so many children who do not think a world outside of Shreveport-Bossier is possible. renzicenter.org SBMAG.NET

Brain Hack #1 Improve Focus and Attention
Brain Hack #2 Improve Visualization & Imagination
Focus techniques for all ages are a great tool to have from shutting down extraneous noise and distractions to deep concentration. Deep breathing while counting in and out allows the brain to re-center and zoom in. Pull each sound or distraction into your brain and deliberately tune it out. Emotional overload can be caused by anything from pain to irritation. Try putting your brain in logic mode by counting backwards from 100 and alternating the alphabet. Make sure this is challenging enough so you need to concentrate. An example counting down by 3s would be: 100-A, 97B, 94-C. Alternatively, spell a word or sentence while counting backwards by 2s: 100-I 98-A 96-M 94-C 92-A 90-L 88-M (“I am calm”).
Visualization allows the brain to travel to imaginary places while reading or thinking but it is also the same skill we use to tap into our memory for spelling and recalling facts necessary for studying. To strengthen visualization, start with a simple sentence such as “John ate a hot dog.” Describe John. Is he a person, a thing, a pet? Now describe the hot dog. Is it an actual dog, or a wiener on a hot dog bun? Is it a turkey or beef hot dog link? What is on the hot dog? Ketchup or mustard or cheese? While this may seem simplistic, it actually allows the mind to free float and begin to see and picture alternative options which allows creative thought to emerge.

Brain Hack #3 Improve Logic and Reasoning A lot of students of all ages and walks of life have a mental block when it comes to math as they do not realize the fun in the mathematical process of patterns. Math is simply an organization of many simple patterns. For example, did you know that all multiples of 9 added together equal 9? 9x2=18 (1+8=9), 9x3=27 (2+7=9). When you multiply a number with 9, the answer begins with one less than that number and the difference from 9. The pattern is simple for finding the answer of a multiple of 9. For 9 x 4…the first number is one less than the multiple, 4-1 = 3. The next number is the difference between that number and 9. 9-3 = 6. So the answer to 9 x 4 = 36. Take a deck of cards and make a game of discovering all the fun patterns. Suddenly math isn’t threatening, but just an array of patterns.
Brain Hack #4 Improve Processing Speed Processing speed affects every part of our brain and unfortunately is a skill that suffers quite a bit as we age, go through life changes, have learning issues or with too much exposure to tech. Improving this skill is as simple as timing oneself and beating that time while doing any task. This could be from math facts to spelling to reading and even to tasks such as sorting laundry or loading a dishwasher. Improving visual processing/hand eye coordination requires one to be looking and passing or writing. One
way to boost this skill is to record numbers as quickly as your mind can think of them or copy them. To improve auditory, you would need someone to dictate numbers or words to you to record. This can certainly be a fun exercise in a competitive manner but remember the goal is to beat oneself and not others.
Brain Hack #5 Improve Memory Memory improvement is the Holy Grail of brain hacks as this skill affects many different things. Perhaps the easiest way to hack memory is to use retrieval fluency exercises. Board games like Scattergories and 5 Second Rule focus on this skill, but you can also create your own fun and easy game to play while sitting and waiting or riding in a car. Simply choose a letter and a category and GO: name 5 foods that start with L, now 5 colors, then 5 football teams, etc. Try to remember the fourth color you listed that started with an L.
Now test your skills…can you remember what the 3rd brain hack was without looking back at it? Donesa Walker, M.Ed. is the owner of LearningRx of Shreveport and The BrainTrain Learning Solutions.

emember back when you went to the office every day? By 10:30 every morning, you were staring into the inky blackness of your second cup of coffee, daydreaming about the freedom and flexibility you believed came from working from home. Then COVID happened.
We were all sent packing, with our files and computers and staplers in tow. Suddenly we became gypsies seeking a homeland. And it wasn’t just the desk jockeys. Even our kids were scrambling to find a new way to learn. In the blink of an eye those serene dreams of working from home became a chaotic nightmare that was all too real. Suddenly, everyone had to reorient themselves. Schedules had to be juggled. The cat began plotting his revenge on the humans who had invaded his “me time.” And just as suddenly, that folding card table was no longer sufficient for a desk, and the milk crates and plywood would no longer cut it for the “office” bookshelves. In short, it was time for a serious upgrade. The home renovation platform Houzz conducted a Houzz and Home study and found home office projects increased 4 percent nationally in 2020, and spending on those renovations was up 10 percent over the previous year.

Tony Ochoa, sales manager at Hester’s Office Solutions, said the rush to create home offices has ebbed somewhat, but they still are in demand. “At first there were a lot of people coming in,” he said. “It has tapered off. People were working from home but not being productive. There’s been kind of a push to move people back to the office. A lot of people are splitting time, but they all have places to work at home.” Chad James, general manager of Office Furniture Source, said home office furniture was evolving even before COVID sent more office workers home. Traditional office furniture wasn’t fitting into the aesthetics at home, he said. “Traditional office furniture is more plain, with clean lines,” he said. “That won’t work in the home. Now people want something more ornate, more decorative, that flows with the house.” Ochoa agreed that people are shying away from putting contemporary office furniture in their homes, opting instead to harken back to the days when studies and home offices were more common. “Some of that older-looking furniture is heavier furniture, more so than contemporary office furniture. A lot of people come in looking for smaller computer desks with hutches that can go against the wall. They want the walnut and mahogany finishes.”
James said that most customers are looking to create functional spaces for both the adults and the students in the home. Some have a dedicated room in the home, but about 60 percent are carving space out of a living room, den or even a dining room to work.
Giving back to the community Hiring local labor Quality work Commercial or Residential
CREATING LOCAL JOBS
Many customers visiting Hester’s Office Solutions are looking to utilize unused or under-used spaces. “The kids are gone, and they don’t need that extra bedroom anymore,” Ochoa said. “Or they don’t really use the dining room.” The biggest challenge, James said, has been finding the right setup for students working at home. “Parents are looking for inexpensive desks for a child,” James said. “That’s not something we typically carry. Schools provide their own furniture. With the kids home, parents wanted to create a space where they can learn in their own environment, away from the parents, that is conducive to helping them learn and stay on task.” Whether you are shopping for an adult or a child, investing in a good chair is essential, James said. “Whether you’re old or young, sitting in dining room chair or lounge chair, that’s not what’s best,” he said. “A chair makes a big difference. Especially for students. Proper seating impacts how productive a child is and how they focused they stay.” James encourages people to check out Pinterest and other sites for inspiration if they want to upgrade their home workspace. You can even find some great DIY ideas, he said. But nothing beats visiting a local store and looking around, he said. Ochoa offered a word to the wise about shopping locally versus ordering home office furniture online. “Be careful. What looks good in a picture online is usually too good to be true,” he said. “There’s a lot of cheap stuff sold online. Then, when you get it home, there’s nobody to service it.” Martin Grau, owner of Officer Furniture Source, also is a strong proponent of buying local, as evidenced by his radio commercials. “When you buy local, that money stays in the community,” he said. “You’re making an investment that will impact our community for generations. If you live in the country and need eggs, you go to your neighbor and get eggs. I’ve had eggs in this community for years. My eggs are office desks and chairs.”

ross Lake—one of northwest Louisiana’s prized waterways— is an 8,575-acre man-made lake built in 1926, and is the major water supply for the City of Shreveport, Barksdale Air Force Base, and many other surrounding communities. Partially surrounded by forest and wetlands, moss covered cypress trees line the banks of this popular open lake with an unlimited access to nature and endless recreational possibilities including sailing, powerboating, fishing, and waterskiing.

For its size, it’s quite warm and inviting—with the focal point being the two-story stone fireplace, which is located in the center of the room. Add in the built-in shelving, and spiral metal staircase—there is a coziness to this central space. Aside from providing the prime focus, the fireplace also has the effect of both cooling the space during the summer months and providing an extremely effective source of warmth in the winter—not just as a fireplace but also as a heat sink drawing warmth from the low sun. Its open-floor concept, with its high walls, vaulted ceiling and sharp architecture, is the perfect spot to stretch out and relax after a long day. Its proximity to the kitchen and dining room make this the gathering place of the home— perfect for entertaining. Growing DAHLIAS in Louisiana
I
n the gardening world, dahlias have become the most coveted flower in the last few years. The wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes raise the average garden to another level. Last year I gave dahlias a trial run by purchasing a potted plant from a local nursery. To my surprise, it continued to bloom beautifully through the hottest part of our Louisiana summer. After researching more about these amazing blooms, I decided to plant dahlia tubers (similar to bulbs) this spring. And oh my goodness! It has been the most rewarding garden adventure so far! Several online nurseries offer dahlia tubers that ship to your home when the planting season begins. My tubers arrived in March from dahlias.com which is Swan Island Dahlias, located in Oregon. This family-owned dahlia farm grows over 370 varieties and ships high quality tubers all over the world. Open to the public for viewing and shopping, they have been in operation for over 93 years! The tubers are packaged in separate bags with tags for labeling after planted. Each tuber is stamped with the name on the tuber…with the most intriguing

growth, as each one can grow to be 18 inches or more in diameter. There is no need to water the tubers until they begin to sprout above the ground. The sprouts may take up to four weeks to appear. When sprouts appear, apply a slug bait around the new growth to protect the plants from being eaten by slugs. Before the sprouts get to be a foot tall, be sure to add some type of staking device. Dahlias can reach up to 4-5 feet in height and will need steady stakes to hold up the tall, heavy blooms. When plants reach approximately 1216 inches tall, be sure to pinch (or snip) the very middle, tallest stem…as this encourages fuller, stronger growth, and an abundance of blooms. During the blooming season, be certain to add a low-nitrogen, bloom food each month. This will encourage dahlias to thrive throughout the summer into fall. Speaking of blooming season…approximately eight weeks after planting, the magic happens. Buds begin to appear! Then, in a few days they open into beautiful dahlia blooms. Some varieties have dinnerplate size flowers! No matter the size, the intricacies of the blooms are delicate and so unique. I am pleased to report they are as stunning as the photos depict. I planted a mix of purple and white dahlias…dwarf, small pom-pom, and large blooms too. The dahlias will continue to bloom until the first frost. The anticipation of the blooms is a lesson in patience. However, once the first bloom opens, it is worth the wait!
names, such as Mikayla Miranda, Lady Liberty, and Marionberry Milkshake. Planting tubers is a simple process. Start in mid-March, after the ground has reached 60 degrees or warmer. The ideal area is in an existing flower bed, or a raised garden bed that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily. Especially in Louisiana, early sun and late afternoon shade makes an ideal growing situation. Be sure to water deeply three times a week, for optimum blooms. It is best to plant dahlia tubers directly into an existing flower bed. However, if you start a new raised bed, be sure to use soil free of fertilizers or herbicides. Cow manure low in nitrogen is a safe soil additive rich in nutrients…just be certain to use sparingly. Be careful, as most composts are high in nitrogen and promote smaller blooms and spindly, weak plants. Bone meal is a safe additive during the planting process. Plant tubers approximately six inches deep in soil, with the eye of the tuber facing up. Sometimes the eyes have a small sprout already growing and is easy to identify. Tubers need 12-24 inches between each one for adequate

Experience Matters Dr. Sanders is known as the place to go for your face in our area; in fact, he is in the exclusive group of physicians known as the “Top 500” within Allergan - the makers of Botox and Juvederm facial injectables. He has been an instructor for Allergan for many years and routinely travels to speak and teach other physicians and medical professionals about facial aesthetic treatments. Dr. Sanders is a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who specializes in facial rejuvenation surgery (facelifting), rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), hair restoration surgery and all facial injectables. He has been in practice for 19 years and is Associate Professor of LSU Health Shreveport for training of the Facial Plastic Surgeon Fellows. He is most excited with the non-invasive and minimally invasive technologies he has acquired recently. Non-surgical fat removal on almost any part of the body with the new Coolsculpting Elite device, his Coolsculpting specialists can help remove those trouble spots on women and men who desire a “no downtime” option. His Facetite, Accutite, and Morpheus devices offer minimally invasive skin tightening and sculpting to the jowl, neck, cheeks, and body areas such as thighs, abdomen, and buttocks. As the most experienced facial injector in North Louisiana Dr. Sanders had this to say: “Who would be better at affecting the face with fillers or Botox other than a Facial Plastic Surgeon?” Handling the fat pads and muscles of the face during surgery has given him a better understanding of where to place the fillers, and how to avoid an “overdone” look. When it comes to surgical intervention for the aging face, Dr. Sanders unique techniques will achieve a natural appearance. “Someone asking for facial rejuvenation surgery wants to look like a younger version of him or herself, not like a different person” states Sanders.

Hair restoration is another love of Dr. Sanders. He is the only physician performing this procedure within 200 miles and his results rival those of any hair transplant surgeon anywhere. Dr. Sanders uses the micro-graft technique, producing a completely invisible end result without any “doll hair” or “corn rows” as is seen with older techniques.

Chandler is tasked with managing an annual budget exceeding $100 million dollars, a municipal workforce of 680 employees and nearly $300 million in capital projects in various stages of completion. Chandler is married to Paula Kay Chandler, the Office Manager for Dr. Peter Boggs, and he has two children, Thomas Jr. and Shelby. The Chandlers recently celebrated the birth of their first grandchild. As a life-long resident of Bossier City, Chandler has been active in business and civic organizations. He is a Past President of Crime Stoppers and has served as Vice President of the Bossier Housing Authority, Vice Chairman of the Bossier Parish Republican Executive Committee and is a Member of the Louisiana Republican State Central Committee. Q&A WITH MAYOR TOMMY CHANDLER
SB Magazine recently sat down with Mayor Chandler to hear more about his plans as Mayor of Bossier City. “This is the third day of the third week and we’re just getting started,” he affirmed. What made you decide to run for mayor? I’ve been kind of doing this for over 20 or 30 years. I put it in God’s hands. I prayed to God, I said “look, you know, I’m gonna run for mayor at this time.” I already had a job, my business, so I didn’t need the job. I wanted the job to help people and to help make Bossier City an even better place to live and work. Bossier is great, but I was wanting to make it better, and I saw the opportunity and I put it in God’s hands. How was campaigning for mayor, especially against a relatively popular incumbent? From the very beginning of the campaign, I started working from daylight until way past dark. One time, my campaign manager had me out until 4 o’clock in the morning putting out signs. I bet I knocked on 90% of the doors in Bossier - the whole city. And it was good to go out. You know, I got to learn the city a whole lot better too, by getting out and walking and talking to different people. When
you go door to door, you get to see people eye to eye, and they tell you their issues and the different things that they want to happen in Bossier City. And it was good for them to see me too. To know that I was going to work for them. How has the transition been from private business owner to government? As I explained during the campaign, my family and I have always owned and operated our own businesses and I want run the city like a business. I know what it’s like to manage employees and make payroll. My family has owned and operated different businesses in Bossier for over 100 years. I’ve personally had three or four different businesses myself, and all of them have been successful and profitable. I bring my many years of business experience with me into government service. Will you continue to operate your current business? I would love to do my own business, but I’m gonna give Bossier City 100% of my attention as long as I’m mayor. I sold my building to DavTac. I could still do stuff on the side, but I’d rather put 100% into the city. Did you bring in a new team? I have brought in some new people into open positions and my team and I are working to fill other open positions that were created by retirements. We have retained the employees because Bossier City was strong already and was blessed with many hard working and dedicated employees. They were already here with Mayor Walker, and I’m glad they stayed with me, and I hope they stay with me the whole time I’m here. The people I work with in my office are awesome. They’re the best, and I’m not just saying that, you know. I enjoy coming to work every day. They make my job a whole lot easier. All the workers in Bossier City are great. What is your working relationship with the City Council like? Basically, being in Bossier for 59 years I know all the Council members. I’ve always had a working relationship with some of the Council. I know their families. But at the end of the day, we all want the best for Bossier City, so we all are going to work together. We have the same goal. You have listed safety as a top priority for your administration. Tell us about your involvement with the non-profit CrimeStoppers. I was a volunteer and past president of CrimeStoppers. I put five years into it, and I have a long history of personally supporting police and fire. It is a tool that really helps the police catch criminals and will remain strong as long as I am mayor. What actions will you take to maintain competitive salaries for the police and fire department and first responders and ensure they have the tools and equipment they need? What helps sell Bossier City is public safety. I mean, not only police, but also the fire, that’s why a lot of people like to come to Bossier, because they feel safe in both ways.
Really, we have competitive wages here - one of the top. But yes, I still want to be able to supply all the police and fire what they need to complete their job every day. In Bossier, we issue new equipment when they come here, and we keep things nice and well maintained and I think that’s one of the draws too. Has there been an uptick in crime in Bossier over the last few years? I’m so glad you asked about that, I’m so proud of our police department. Our new substitute Police Chief, Chris Estess, during the first or second week of my term increased boots on the ground with more officers on patrol by 10% and in August there’ll be 10% even more boots on the ground. I’m so proud of them because they’re getting a lot of things done and they’ve already saved the city some money, cutting out some things they didn’t really need. But our police department and fire department are strong. They were strong before and they’re getting stronger now. It is safe in Bossier City right now and it is my priority that it stays that way. What are your plans for investing in roads, and how do you plan to approach traffic complaints and issues surrounding the flow of traffic and condition of the roads? To tell you the truth, having traffic is really a good problem, because if you didn’t have traffic, you’d have a dead town, and so I’m glad we got a lot. We just need to work with the synchronizing of the lights and managing traffic flow better. There is a study in progress on how to best address traffic flow. SBMAG.NET

to me now and they sound excited that there is a new administration they can work with to bring in new business. There are several new businesses coming into the East Bank District which is bringing new life to our old downtown area. But we have ideas, like curb appeal. Getting the city cleaner and keeping it cleaner. That’s going to bring more people to town. Improving the flow of traffic will help people get in to shop more. That’s a high priority for me.
What working relationship will you have with the school board regarding education since there are no formal reporting requirements between the Board and the Mayor’s office? The school board is its own body. I know the Superintendent Mitch Downey. We grew up together. I know a lot of school board members, but if they need some help, I’d like to give them some of my advice or help them out any way what I can. Education in Bossier City is really great. That’s another reason why people come to Bossier is for the quality of education. We are blessed with great teachers and support workers too. There’s a lot of them that get a lot of accolades at the end of the year for all the things that they’ve done, and I’m very proud of them. What measures are you taking to ensure the Bossier water is safe and the water systems are secure? Bossier City water quality is very high but I want to make sure it stays high and safe for our residents. The city is continuing a study related to a nano filtration system that is going to help us improve water quality. We want the neighborhoods to have a better water system coming to them. I’m committed to help the Public Utility and Engineering departments to maintain the safest, high quality water for Bossier City. Do you have specific initiatives in mind to help grow business in Bossier? One of my biggest passions is selling Bossier City to new businesses and helping our existing businesses grow and prosper. I’m excited because a lot of people are coming in

I believe in curb appeal and we’ve already started cleaning a lot of streets. All the major streets or roads in Bossier are state roads or highways but a lot of time we can’t wait on the state to clean them up, so we’re gonna clean it up ourselves. When you clean the roads, people take more pride in their city. If you notice also outside our city hall, there were some old brown dingy bushes and so we cut them all out and now we got some nice flowers. It looks a whole lot different than it did last week, and it’ll get even better once the flowers start blooming and will give a breath of fresh air to city hall. You have promised to be resourceful with tax dollars and not to raise taxes, as well as to lower taxes by cutting wasteful spending. What is your plan to ensure that the Bossier City tax structure is both business and resident friendly? When more business and more people come, taxes aren’t going to need to be raised because we’ll be making more money by expanding our tax base. And it’s gonna help our police department and fire department and all areas, all departments of the city. You’ve also talked about eliminating waste or not funding pet projects, right? We’ll cut that out. Like I said I’m going to run it like a business. You gotta look over that stuff, and if something isn’t working, we need to do away with that and work with what will work. How will you handle the city budgeting process? I’m proud that the City Council unanimously approved our Director of Finance, Angela Williamson. I am beginning the process of working on next year’s budget. The budget process for 2022 is gearing up. It’ll start going be-
fore the council in September. All the departments are getting their budgets together already, and then I’ll meet with every department one-on-one. We’ll probably meet once or twice or three times or even more, to break down their budget and get everything to what everybody needs and cut out what they don’t need. How will any funds received through the federal government CARES Act be allocated? I think we have half of it and then the other half is gonna come next year. We basically need get the council involved. They already got it before I got sworn in. They’ve got some ideas. I want to sit down with them to kind of iron it out. That money can only be spent on certain things, so it’s limited. Do you have any other specific areas of focus? Yes, the youth in Bossier City. What we’re planning on doing is getting a lot more things for the youth to do, like travel baseball, a lot of sports activities, so that kids stay here in Bossier instead of having to go out to other places and play sports in other cities. And also, to have other kids come in to Bossier, enjoy our facilities. The construction at Tinsley Park should be finished here pretty soon, that’s gonna bring a lot of travel ball, and we hope to get a lot more things out of the tennis courts. I just want to get a lot more things for the kids to do, more activities. I would love to have travel soccer, even travel fishing, pickle ball, all of that. I want to get an assortment of things in here.
You campaigned on the promise of new ideas and the ambition for Bossier City to be a model city for growth and prosperity in Louisiana. Can you elaborate on what this means to you and your plans to achieve this? Right, when people drive through Bossier City, I want them to be able to look at our city and like what they see so they will want to stop or come back to see us. I want Bossier City to be a billboard, the whole city, where our people are proud and people from other areas want to come see us. What plans do you have for working with Shreveport? Well basically you know, Shreveport and Bossier City, we’re so close together, we both need to work together to improve both cities because that helps everyone in the area. I’ve already talked with Adrian Perkins a few times and I look forward to working with him and the Shreveport City Council on issues that impact us all. Overall, what do you think is the key to a stronger Bossier City? Growing that tax base is really going to be the key. Everything kind of fits together when you improve that curb appeal and you make it easy for business to do business here, and you have traffic flow better - all of these things coming together. I’m happy to be working for Bossier City and working for the citizens. I’ve loved Bossier City my whole life and I wake up every day and try to make our city a better place.
When morning came to Louisiana, we were wide awake. Ready for what’s next. And as we begin anew, Blue Cross stands ready to support you. bcbsla.com

S
aturday, July 3, 2021, over 350 family and friends gathered to the sounds of saxophone player Curtis Mills, at Silverlake Ballroom in Shreveport, Louisiana, to witness the nuptials of Bride Meagan Christine Nesbit to Groom Coulson Hewitt White. Meagan and Coulson vowed their love and commitment to each other with Dr. Gevan Spinney of First Baptist Church of Haughton officiating. The Bride’s late uncle, Alton Ray Anderson, was a longtime resident of New Orleans and his love for New Orleans traditions and culture inspired the bride to have a New Orleans influenced wedding. Longtime friend, Kate Posey, played piano and floral designs were by Eddie Colvin. Guests enjoyed a feast of Louisiana cuisine prepared by Upper Crust Catering. Windstorm band entertained guests with standing room only on the dance floor. Caricature artist, Art by Sam, created memorable keepsakes for each guest. Brittney, of Dirk Guidry Art, shared her talents while painting a live scene of the reception. Meagan and Coulson exited the reception with guests following in the traditional second line dance. Guests sent the happy couple off with sparklers and fireworks. In keeping with the New Orleans tradition, an inspired Lucky Dog cart provided guests with a Bellevue Meat smoke Dawg and a New Orleans praline. Father of the Bride, Chris Nesbit said it best, “Marriage is not a party. Marriage takes two people who will share good and bad times and love each other when they are unlovable. But July 3, 2021, family and friends came together to celebrate Meagan and Coulson and we had a grand party.”

eddings in 2021 are booming, from both recent engagements and the pent-up demand after 2020 postponements. Many 2020 couples who chose elopements, Justice of the Peace, or intimate affairs are planning fullblown receptions in 2021. Weddings or receptions with an outdoor element are in high demand. Many couples are having elegant farmhouse events and selecting venues like plantations, estates, and private residences, in addition to the always popular private clubs in the area.
2021
The local wedding experts have one unified message: plan ahead! Venues, salons, bands, and others are being booked earlier and earlier. Some couples are foregoing the traditional Saturday evening wedding for other days of the week in order to use their preferred vendors.
But no matter the size or location of the wedding, one thing remains constant. Couples are creating a wedding experience unique to their personalities and style.
Wishing you a beautiful wedding and a happy marriage! SBMAG.NET

equivalent to one-fortieth of a pound sterling, and was used for good luck, showing that the father wished his daughter prosperity in marriage. If you don’t have an actual sixpence, use a penny. The Perfect Thank You Note Writing thank you notes can be exhausting, especially if you have a big wedding. Many brides-to-be are juggling wedding planning and full- time jobs. Don’t send a text, email, or call to say thanks— it should be a note sent by snail-mail. Sending a note as soon as you receive a gift is the best way to stay on top of it. According to Emily Post Etiquette, having a year to write the notes is a myth; three months is the limit. If your budget BY ELIZABETH BEARD DEAL allows, order nice foldover note stationery with Something Old, Something New your name or monogram imprinted, and if not, any noteDo you know the rest of this familiar phrase about what cards will do. The Late Night Snack Receptions that last late into the evening have popularized the late night snack, presented after a long night of partying. This snack is usually informal in nature even at the most formal of weddings with exquisite buffets or dinners. Hot dogs, burgers, pretzels, popcorn…there are so many options. And some brides take it up a notch, with food wrappers or containers. From Rice to Fire Around the world, it’s traditional for family and friends to shower newlyweds with rice, rose petals, spices, and other items to wish the couple good fortune, a prosperous marriage, and children if they desire. Many brides switched to birdseeds and bubbles when a myth took hold that uncooked rice would be harmful to the birds that ate it. Now, you are highly likely to see the bride and groom pass through a wall of guests brandishing sparklers— and there may even be fireworks! The Photo Shoot Couples are choosing more and more interesting backdrops for their wedding photographs. In addition to a beautiful church photo, there are fabulous outdoor backdrops like streetscapes, fields, trees, and water. Incorporating some lighthearted photos adds effect, too.

Take That Honeymoon! For financial or work reasons, some couples choose to delay or skip altogether a honeymoon. The time spent alone together is priceless, whether it’s a few days away or a 2-week trip out of the country. Factor it into your budget and start saving as soon as possible. If you need to pare down something for your reception (for your guests) in order to honeymoon, do it! Your boss won’t (or shouldn’t!) SBMAG.NET

Smith gratefully accept (or regretfully decline) the invitation to the marriage of your daughter on October 1.” The note was then sent by courier or mail to the host. Fast forward to today, and wedding invitations usually include a fill-in-the-blank response card, pre-addressed envelope, and even postage! If it’s this easy, you’d think all the response cards would come back on time!
begrudge you this time. Before you know it, you will be back in the real world, working and possibly having children. You’ll never regret taking a honeymoon. R.S.V.P. Please In this modern day and age of technology, can you imagine sending a handwritten note to reply to a party invitation? At one time, that’s how it was done. The acronym R.S.V.P. comes from the French words “repondez s’il vous plait,” or “please respond” in English. Upon receipt of an invitation, a formal handwritten note on stationery was written, saying something akin to “Mr. and Mrs. John
What’s a Bridezilla? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a bridezilla as “a bride or bride-to-be who is extremely demanding and difficult to deal with.” Planning and executing your special day and all the details and events surrounding it can be challenging. But through it all, it’s important to show your betrothed as well as friends, family, and future family the utmost of respect. It can be difficult to appease everyone but strive for compromise and understanding. Keep the budgets of your bridal party in mind, because it can be expensive to buy shower gifts, a bridesmaid’s dress, a wedding gift, and also purchase a plane ticket and hotel room to travel for a bachelorette party. Don’t expect others to change their personal appearance for your wedding. Your vendors are focused on accommodating your special requests and providing excellent service, so try to stay positive even when you’re feeling stressed. They will be appreciative for good online reviews, too. Keeping things in perspective and following the golden rule is a great way to stay out of the bridezilla category!

What’s Your Style? It wasn’t too very long ago that almost all grooms wore tuxedos and bridesmaids wore bright taffeta dresses with dyed shoes to match. Today, bridesmaids often wear gowns with uniquely flattering styles, which can definitely be worn again! Many grooms still wear tuxedos, but suits, casual attire, and even jeans have been making an appearance. Many brides have traded in the formal hair up-do for a messy bun, loose curls and even braids. Veils are as popular as ever and dresses range from simple to extravagant, depending on the bride’s personality, budget, and style of wedding. Don’t shy away from heavier makeup than normal—it makes for great photos! Color, and More Color Brides are incorporating a lot of color into their weddings with lavish flowers, decorations, signage, linens, and having multiple-colored bridesmaids dresses. Their registries reflect this as well, full of colored glasses and dishes for both formal and informal entertaining. The First Dance

BREE CARROLL
SB PEOPLE
BY ELIZABETH DEAL
events, she focused on finding new ways address marriages in her military community. She hosted a Combat COVID Marriage Summit, rallied local creatives to put together an elopement for a service couple whose wedding plans were cancelled, sponsored a survey to get data on the health of military marriages, and did more speaking and coaching on how to develop a thriving relationship within military life. According to Bree, the current culture doesn’t emphasize strong marriages. She was surprised to learn how few resources were available to help military couples considering divorce. At one point, several friends began to file for divorce and a few suicides on base really hit home. Shaken, she wanted to be a part of the solution.
M
eet Bree Carroll, military wife, mother of three, civil engineer, entrepreneur, event specialist, speaker, and military marriage coach. She now holds one more title: the 2020-21 Armed Force Insurance Military Spouse of the Year (MSOY) for the Air Force. “I want to be the change I hope to see in the world,” she says. Her platform: strengthening military marriages.
All married couples face challenges like finances, parenting, and managing responsibilities, but a military marriage brings additional challenges. Separations due to deployments or temporary duty assignments means service members are often away from home, may miss important milestones, and can test the fidelity of both partners. Learning to manage the household and parenting responsibilities alone can be difficult, and a level of adjustment is required to learn to live together again after a long separation. Moving frequently— leaving the known for the unknown—adds additional stress. Bree, a civil service employee for eleven years, has been married to her husband, B-52 pilot Captain Donovan Carroll, for seven years. She has personal experience with the challenges of military marriages, working full-time and raising three children through three permanent moves and five deployments. At Barksdale, she assists spouses in navigating government hiring and shared tuition assistance and scholarship opportunities. She has advocated for spousal employment and diversity outreach, and was proud to serve as President of the Officers’ Spouses’ Club during the administration that transitioned it into an open and inclusive Spouses’ Club. In addition to her career as a civil engineer, Bree has an event planning business and has been awarded a top wedding planner by both Wedding Wire and SB Magazine. Her goal has always been to help couples design a marriage that celebrates their core values and becomes even more beautiful than their wedding day. After a few years, she recounts, “I realized that at my core I cared more about the couple’s relationship than the color of their table linens.” When the pandemic postponed
She began to volunteer with The Warrior Network non-profit, serving over 3,500 active-duty families. Now, as the Director of Family Events, Carroll helped raise $8,000 to give to Airmen in times of crisis and need, and she supports quarterly events to bring Barksdale service member families together to discuss both lighthearted and serious subjects, like suicide. She also launched Hearts & Stripes, an internationally broadcasted podcast where she speaks on the power of relationships and gives advice to military spouses. “Our role as military spouses is not an easy one,” Carroll notes. She was named a Key Spouse for the 20th Bomb Squadron, and became responsible for maintaining close personal relationships and support for 60 spouses. Her dedication was recently put to the test as the squadron was tasked with a no-notice deployment and were unprepared for the sudden life-change. “My proudest leadership moment came with consoling and supporting a young spouse who was frantic,” she says. In 2020, she founded a virtual international event around Military Marriage Day (celebrated annually on August 14th) to give couples resources based on four core values: fidelity to nation and relationship, diversity as every marriage is uniquely beautiful, community as a necessary support for healthy marriages, and intentionality in strengthening and celebrating relationships. “My hope is to create proactive and resolution-based resources for our military couples. I believe the strength of the military family has direct correlation to the strength of our armed forces and the core of that is the marriage,” she says. This year the event will reach Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force service couples internationally. As Spouse of the Year, she has represented Barksdale and the Air Force on supporting military families to the Joint Chief of Staff’s spouse and other military community leaders. In September, she will attend the MSOY Town Hall in Washington, DC, speak to fellow spouse leaders in the military spouse community, meet with Senators and Governors, and participate in the 20-year remembrance ceremony of September 11th. Her focus will be to raise awareness and rally support for Military Marriage Day and marriage resources for the service community.

P
wellness tips on Creating a Healthier Lifestyle BY ADAM BAILEY
eople often think about wellness in terms of physical health—nutrition, exercise and weight management. But let’s be honest, it is so much more. Wellness is the ‘complete’ integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being—fueling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit.
Disclaimer: The contents of this article are for informational purposes only and do not constitute a medical service. Always seek the advice of a physician or other qualified health professional for medical advice, diagnosis, and treatment.
Sometimes it can feel like maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an overwhelming challenge that doesn’t fit within the realities of daily life. It’s tough to hold down a full-time job, eat well, train for a marathon, make homemade green juice, spend quality time with your family, and meditate for an hour each day. Of course, healthy living can incorporate all of these things, but it doesn’t have to be defined by grandiose displays of health and fitness. Here are 18 tips to live a healthier, happier lifestyle—all simple, easy things that can be seamlessly incorporated into your daily life: Self-Care is Essential. Chronic stress is detrimental to both your physical and mental health. Get to know your stress triggers (the things that cause stress for you, either quickly or in the long-term) as well as your stress releases (the things that can help calm you when you’re stressed) so you can proactively cope with stress and maintain healthy levels. To prevent burnout, start making time for self-care. From pedicures, yoga and spa treatments to working out, spending time outdoors and finding a new hobby, anyone can practice self-care in a variety of enjoyable ways. Cultivate a Positive Mindset. It’s true—mindset is everything! Cultivate a positive mindset by recognizing negative thought patterns and countering them with positive thoughts or affirmations. Get Plenty of Sleep. While some folks boast about getting by on 4-hours of sleep, the truth is—most of us are sleep-deprived. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. But in addition to quantity, quality of sleep matters too! Focus on getting quality sleep—like keeping your bedroom cool at night and avoiding blue light after dark. Being well-rested is one of the biggest components of being a happy person! Take the Stairs. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a simple way to get a little more physical activity in your

daily life. It also strengthens and tones your legs and core while you’re at it! Drink More Water. Coffee’s great, too, but the benefits of water are many. Water is absolutely necessary and helps to aid digestion, enhance skin health and boost energy. In general, the average adult needs two-to-three liters a day. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise. And not just a few times a week, but every day. Engaging in regular exercise will help you feel more energetic, relaxed, and sharp during the day while you are working, which will inevitably influence your overall feelings about work itself. Aim to sweat in some way—whether that is via running, biking, dancing, hot yoga, or any other physical activity you enjoy. Engage in a Hobby You Truly Love. It’s easy to let work take over your life, but having defined boundaries between your professional and personal life is crucial. One way to keep your work/life balance in check is to find a hobby you’re passionate about and enjoy doing. Being able to “escape” into your hobby for a while will bring you pleasure, keep your thoughts away from any work-related stress, and engage your mind. Eat Real Food. Aim to eat real food that is made of whole food ingredients you would have in your own kitchen pantry, or that your grandmother would recognize. “Real food” includes unprocessed foods like an apple, a cucumber, soybeans or a steak, as well as foods loosely processed from one (or few) real-food ingredients, like butter, olive oil, yogurt, tofu, etc. In other words, aim for foods that could be reasonably made in your own kitchen and avoid foods that can only be made in a lab.
Drink a Green Smoothie Daily. Green smoothies are the perfect way to get your greens in each day. Similar to the traditional fruit smoothie, but contains more green veggies and can include spinach, lettuce, kale, collard greens, parsley, dandelion greens, or watercress—pretty much any leafy green veggie your palate desires. Bananas, apples, pears, avocado, and mango are great companions and work well to enhance the overall flavor and texture. Get Plenty of Sunshine. Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for overall health, and sunlight is one of our best sources of it. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of sunlight each day—preferably in the afternoon, and without sunscreen. Avoid Negative People in Your Life. A positive mentality is key for a healthy life. You don’t need negativity in your life. If you feel that a person or friend is negative, just let him or her go. Make Friends. Making a lasting friendship is not just a smart networking approach or strategy for status— friendship is intimately connected to both your physical and mental well-being. Friends keep you grounded, help put things in perspective, and help manage the problems that life throws your way. Meditate Daily. One of the easiest ways to live a healthier lifestyle is by meditating. Whether you spend time journaling, focusing on your present surroundings, or being
mindful as you do deep breathing, meditating every day can help you de-stress and feel happier. Meditation is intended to purify your mind of thoughts that trigger your stress response—the reaction that keeps you in emotional and physical bondage. Develop Better Eating Habits. A simple hack for healthy eating (and portion control) is to make half your plate veggies at each meal. The veggies pack in essential vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients important for health and longevity. And, because they’re rich in fiber, they help to aid digestion and keep you feeling full longer. Practice Gratitude. Practice gratitude each day—this could be when you wake up, before bed, or during your lunch break at work. Here are our favorite tips for finding more gratitude in your daily life, plus a rundown of the physical and mental health benefits of practicing gratitude regularly. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help. Do not feel like you have to take on the world all by yourself. Humanity is a team sport and no one will ever think any less of you if you ask for help. Not asking for help when you need it the most is preventing you from achieving the best possible outcome. Smile. It is true—smiling boosts your physical and mental health. So, find ways to smile as often as you can throughout the day. Work Hard + Be Kind. Enough said!

Pets Bring
WELLNESS
P
et owners relish in the immediate happiness that comes from sharing their lives with that special furry friend...or feathered friend. But are you aware of the physical and mental health benefits we get from our pets daily? Studies exploring the benefits of the human-pet bond have shown that your pet is acutely attuned to your behavior, emotions, and health. This special bond can help relieve depression and anxiety, lower stress, and increase fitness to help improve your heart health.
Companionship Companionship can help promote a sense of well-being, while loneliness and isolation often leads to depression. Caring for a pet can help make a person feel needed and wanted and keeps them from obsessing over tedious problems in their life. Many pet owners talk to their pets and often use them as a sounding board to work through their daily troubles. Additionally, pets provide valuable companionship for elderly adults. For many people, there’s nothing better than coming home to a wagging tail.
Exercise Caring for a pet can help promote healthy lifestyle changes. Taking your dog for a walk, hike, or run is a fun and great way to fit daily exercise into a busy schedule. A dog owner is over 50% more likely to meet their daily exercise goals. People with pets tend to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol and are less likely to be overweight, which helps promote a healthy heart and reduces your chance of diabetes. Exercising every day is also great for your pet. It helps to build a stronger connection with you, to eradicate bad behavior in dogs, and to keep your pet fit, healthy, and happy.
Socializing Pets can help their owners start and maintain new friendships. Pets are great ice-breakers, making it easy for strangers to start conversations. However, that's old news to dog walkers. Dog owners frequently stop and talk to each other on walks, hikes, or at dog parks. Walking your dog in your neighborhood or at the park can often lead to befriending a neighbor through a pet-related connection. A pet store or a training class is a great place to meet new friends with similar pet interests.

Anxiety The companionship of a pet can help ease stress and build self-confidence for people with anxiety. Pets
Woof!
WE DELIVER IN ABOUT AN HOUR! are great listeners, offer unconditional love, and won’t be critical of you. This can help build your self-confidence, especially if you feel misunderstood. In addition, a pet companion helps you appreciate the joy of the moment— pets don’t worry about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow. Studies have shown that petting a dog, cat, or other pet can lower blood pressure and quickly help calm and reduce stress. Kids Caring for a pet can help a child grow up more secure and active. A dog or cat offers comfort and companionship to kids. Children find support and security from their pet friends, which leads to less anxiety or withdrawal. Additionally, a pet is an excellent way for your child to learn about responsibility and commitment. Having to feed, exercise, and care for a pet can give a child a sense of achievement. It doesn’t matter what age you are or if you are single or married with children; there are significant benefits of having a pet in your life. They can make you laugh when you are sad, give you companionship when you feel alone, improve your health, and boost your fitness. Pets give us so much more than we could ever imagine when we first welcomed these little bundles of fur into our homes.

: ri ui iq Da en oz Fr e Th A Weird, Yet Wonderful, Louisiana Tradition BY ADAM BAILEY
surrounding the birth of the daiquiri cocktail. Many do, however, agree on its creator—Jennings Stockton Cox.
As the story goes, Cox was an American engineer who lived and worked in Cuba after the Spanish-American War. One night, after running out of gin while throwing a cocktail party, rum proved a convenient substitute in a punch he was serving. Along with the newly substituted rum, the drink was made with brown sugar and limes—since lemons were unheard of in Cuba—then presented to his guests in a tall glass with cracked ice. Obviously, it turned out to be a huge hit, so Cox christened it the “Daiquiri,” naming the cocktail after the nearby port town.
P
eople often wonder how Louisianans survive the heat and humidity during the summer months. Two words—frozen daiquiris! The best part about this refreshing, sugary cocktail is that you don’t have to leave your air-conditioned vehicles to get them. Just pull your car or truck up to the nearest drive-through liquor store and order a daiquiri off the menu. You can choose from 32-ounce, 44-ounce or even gallon-sized portions. Pay the attendant, who’ll pass you your drinks in a large Styrofoam cup through the driver’s side window, and drive away. That’s all there is to it!
History of the Daiquiri
It is difficult to know for certain the exact circumstances
A Short History of Drive-Through Daiquiris in Louisiana
When it comes to frozen daiquiris and Louisiana history, David Ervin opened The Daiquiri Factory in Lafayette in 1981. At the time, the state had no laws against drinking and driving. And although his business experienced some pushback from the community, it wasn’t enough to shut it down (or even dampen its popularity). After all, Louisianans love their alcohol. The drive-through daiquiri stand was an overnight success (at least for Erwin). By the mid-1980s, dozens of competitors were opening all over the state. Today, they are now a part of everyday life. Located mainly in strip malls and in the suburbs, most daiquiri stands make their living not from drunken out-of-towners, but from locals stopping by on their way to or from another part of their lives. Many patrons will pick up a gallon of daiquiris to loosen up a family or work party.

CELEBRATIONS OF LIFE
How is this Legal?
Addressing the elephant in the room—yes, the drivethrough daiquiri stand is 100% legal in Louisiana. A small piece of tape is all that prevents customers from getting pulled over and charged with driving with an open container. According to Dr. Michael Mizell-Nelson, a former history professor at the University of New Orleans, the whole tape on the lid phenomenon got started when Lafayette introduced a law “forbidding open containers of alcohol in moving vehicles.” This caused Erwin’s Daiquiri Factory to get creative and claim that their containers were sealed because “the lids were taped to foam cups.” Like in Lafayette, open container laws would soon spread throughout the state, as did the ‘tape on the lid’ phenomenon. Today, Louisiana’s Open Container Law (LSA 32:300) pretty much states that a frozen daiquiri isn’t an open container unless “the lid is removed, a straw protrudes therefrom, or the contents of the receptacle have been partially removed.” Decades and millions of daiquiris later, interpretation of Louisiana’s open container law still exists today. Just remember to keep the cup lid on, and wait until you get home to insert the straw and drink it.
What’ll It Be, Honey?
Ernest Hemingway could put away 15 frozen daiquiris in
one sitting, while it is said John F. Kennedy sipped daiquiris when he beat Nixon in the 1960 presidential election. Today, these sugary frozen rum drinks can be found in just about every liquor store or drive-through daiquiri shop in Shreveport-Bossier, and come in just about every flavor you can think of. There are the predictable tropical seasonal flavors— like the peach Bellini, Rum Runner and Pina Colada. A few crazy, cool concoctions include the Blueberry Thrill (blueberry schnapps, pineapple and rum) and the F.U.B.A.R with over 14 types of liquor! The Sexy Lady mixes a Sex on the Beach with a Gold Margarita to include wildberry schnapps, cranberry, orange juice, 190, tequila, gran gala, and lime. Other offerings include Purple Rain, Lemonshock, 190, Antifreeze, Strawberry Colada, Jungle Juice, and the ominous-sounding Suicide. Believe-it-or-not, Shreveport has its own famous daiquiri invention—the Eggnog Daiquiri—invented by mistake about 20 years ago by the late Mike Cordaro of Tony’s Liquor. That recipe, and all its goodness, remains a Cordaro family secret to this day. Of course, it’s only available for a few months a year. No matter your taste, there is a multitude of slushee machines in the area, churning dozens of neon-colored flavors of daiquiri varieties full of its alcohol, flavored frozen richness. If none of these offerings signals a cool celebration of summer, I’m not sure what does.

CHIMP HAVEN LAUNCHES VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE AND PLANS RESTART OF IN-PERSON VISITS Chimp Haven, the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary, unveiled a new, interactive virtual experience that allows visitors from around the world access to behind-the-scenes views of the forested sanctuary, home to more than 330 chimpanzees retired from biomedical research. To help provide the chimpanzees with an environment that replicates the wild, the sanctuary limits visits to a few special events throughout the year. These events were put on hold during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that’s when staff members got to work creating an online experience that would allow people to explore the sanctuary from anywhere with internet access and serve as an educational resource for classrooms, or for anyone wanting to learn more about the chimps and their care. Chimp Haven is relaunching its series of popular in-person visits with “Chimp Chat & Chew” on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon. DR. Get back to school safely. Hear from your local, trusted providers. The start of a new school year is always an exciting time. However, parents will have to decide whether to vaccinate their child against COVID-19. It’s recommended that children 12 years and older get vaccinated. Some parents are hesitant. At Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, we understand your concerns.
We asked members of our healthcare family for their insight to offer guidance to parents who are unsure and undecided. “It’s important that kids get vaccinated, even though they may not manifest illness like older people might. However, because kids are frequently not showing symptoms of COVID, it’s very difficult for us to know for sure whether they are actually getting COVID and spreading it to others. For the safety of all involved, vaccinating everyone is the right strategy.” - Dr. Mike Sewell Chief of Hospital Medicine – Academic Medical Center “I think it’s important for children to be vaccinated because they are around older patients. They are around compromised patients. They are around grandparents and other family members. Although they are not the biggest super-spreaders that we have in our community, they definitely have a part to play. I think that, if your child is eligible to be vaccinated, then he or she should do their part to make sure that everyone in the family, friends and neighbors are all safer.” - Dr. Wanda Thomas Pediatrics, AHEC Program Director – Academic Medical Center
“Children are not at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19. They are not likely to cause spreading of COVID-19. However, children can become infected with COVID-19, and while they might not become ill, they certainly can spread that to others, especially family members.” - Dr. Euil Luther Family Medicine Physician – Monroe Medical Center
If you have a specific question, talk to your child’s pediatrician. For more information, visit ochsnerlsuhs.org/vaccine Together. Stronger.
