Shreveport Little Theatre “Maker of Dreams” Gala The Shreveport Little Theatre celebrated its 100th season in style with “The Maker of Dreams” Gala held at East Ridge Country Club. “The Maker of Dreams” is a documentary depicting the fascinating history of our treasured SLT over the last century. Shreveport Little Theatre was founded in 1922 and is one of the oldest continuously producing community theatres in America. Not even the Great Depression, World War II or two fires could stop SLT from producing and performing. The performing theatre has earned national recognition in LIFE Magazine naming Shreveport Little Theatre as one of the nation’s top three community playhouses. Manager and Artistic Director Robert K Darrow oversaw the founding of SLT Academy for youth. When asked about the future of SLT, Darrow said, “I have no doubt that Shreveport Little Theatre & Academy will continue to thrive in the decades to come.” 1

Angel Run for Holy Angels The 21st annual David Rice Memorial Angel Run & Walk, presented by Elite Health Solutions, was held at Holy Angels campus. Hundreds came out to walk, run, cheer and support the mission of Holy Angels — to provide individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities a path to self-fulfillment through education, empowerment, spirituality, independence and work. In 2002, the Rice family and friends helped host the very first Angel Run to honor their son, David, who lived at Holy Angels for sixteen years until he passed away in 2001. Barbara Rice, David’s mother, said “The Angel Run has not only been a special way to remember our son but is a way to pay back Holy Angels for the love and care he received.” 1

TRENDS 2022
T
rends in fashion and beauty this season are sizzling hot! Some of the trends being spotted this season are truly new and innovative while others have carried right over from seasons past. Either way, sporting any of the trends will keep you as cool as a popsicle on a hot summer’s day whether you are sunbathing poolside or at your favorite seasonal event.
Fashion
1. Brightly Colored Suits Long gone are the days of the classic business suits in the traditional neutral shades. This season’s businesswoman is sizzling in welltailored suits featured in loud, bright, luxurious shades such as teal, lime green, and even hot pink. A simple, more understated way to embrace this vivid summer trend is to try adding in a few brightly colored pieces such as tops, shoes, or accessories, if you are not ready to go all-in on the head-to-toe look. 2. Miniskirts The mini skirt is back. Hem lines this season are rising higher than the mercury in a thermometer on a hot sunny day. If you dare to go bare and show off your beautifully bronzed legs, then go for it! If you don’t want to show so much skin, try layering a cute pair of tights under your mini skirt or pair it with a sheer or loose knit duster. 3. Cut Outs & Splices There is nothing new about fashion pieces that feature cut outs or splices. This trend has been hanging around strong for the past few seasons. This season we are seeing cut outs and splices in much more summer friendly fabrics and prints. The key thing to focus on is the placement of the cut out--a few inches too high or too low is the difference between cute versus tacky! 4. Varsity Style This trend has been hanging on since the fall. The key to pulling off this trend with some summertime flair is to be mindful of your fit, fabric, and colors. Brighter colors, light weight fabrics and flowy fits are more reminiscent of that “school’s out for summer” vibe. 5. All About Yellow Many are saying that a bright sunny yellow is undoubtably the color of the season. No matter what your personal style is or what trend your look to achieve, you simply can’t go wrong when you are in a sunny summer shade of yellow!

11. The Loose Pony Instead of doing a slick, tight to the head ponytail, leave it much looser and wear it at the nape of your neck.

Swimwear
12. Space Buns Space buns are yet another trend carrying over from season’s past. Whether at the gym, beach, running errands or just lounging poolside, this funky style works for any lowkey occasion. Plus, it’s much more fun than a regular bun.
7
6. Funky Florals No matter what cut you prefer; bold busy exaggerated floral prints are a hot way to stand out this summer. 7. Sparkle & Shine Shining and sparkling in swimwear is a luxurious way to be on trend while standing out poolside. Sequins, rhinestones, even metallic materials are all the rage this year. 8. Knitted Fabrics Think 70’s, think retro, think grandma’s doily! Knitted swimwear can be done in many fabrics and can be quite comfortable while giving off fun, carefree, boho gypsy vibes. 9. Fun & Flirty Cutouts Cutouts are being displayed in many ways this season, with swimwear being one of the most prominent. Stick to the same rules as a fashion piece. It’s all about the placement. Just one inch too high or too low can make all the difference!
13. Top Knot Simply sweep your hair up and back into a knot form on the crown of your head much like a ballet bun, but just a bit more fun and messy.
The biggest trend in hair is casu and fun, a littleal messy & undone. 12
10. Retro-Inspired Caftan The classic vintage caftan is being reimagined in many bold new ways, like swimwear coverups. This summer, if you want to look more elegant while water side, try a beautiful caftan as your swimsuit coverup.

14. Bronzed Glowing Skin As an alternative to sun exposure, try some healthy for your skin options to achieve bronzed glowing skin like air brushed tans, self-tanning lotions, and makeup bronzers. 15. Nude Glowing Eyes A soft, beautiful, highlighted, nude look—just softly highlight the high points of your eyes, brow bones & lids. Then sweep a rich bronze brown though the crease and along the bottom water line. 16. Luscious Lip Gloss That lacquered, dripping wet, super shiny lip gloss look is the look to go for right now. Gloss can easily be applied over your favorite everyday lipstick, too!

“There are numerous benefits to a builder having a home on the Parade of Homes. I strongly believe it is by far, the best marketing tool available—the opportunity to introduce thousands of people to the quality of their work,” says Elston. Elston admits that the benefits aren’t just for the home builders—but the vendors see the results too! From appliances, cabinets, flooring, countertops, lighting, and even landscaping—it allows everyone a chance to showcase their work,” he says. KIDS ENGAGED this Summer
BY URSULA BRANTLEY
A
s summer eases in, children look forward to all the free time they can catch up on now that school bells have stopped ringing. Children and adolescents see summer vacation as a chance for more screen time, less studying, staying up late, and sleeping in. An article in the medical journal Frontiers in Public Health reports that sedentary behavior, or physical inactivity, increases during summer months from 1.7% to 8% for children ages six-nine. The article also states that, “Regular physical activity reduces the health risk of childhood obesity and associated chronic diseases as well as mental health problems.” Though these findings were centered around children ages six to nine, children of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds can fall victim to the summer slump. Parents should do their best to keep their kids’ idle hands and minds busy in a positive way until school bells start ringing again in the fall. The National Library of Medicine, part of the National Center for Biotechnology Information, published an article that states, “Out of school periods affect children’s physical activity as it is mainly left to the interest and motivation of their parent.” Making sure children and adolescents stay active and engaged during the off-season keeps them healthy physically and mentally, ensures they don’t fall behind educationally, and keeps them from finding or creating trouble. Parents can do their part in lots of ways, such as taking their families on vacations, on field trips to museums or aquariums, enrolling kids in sports, participating in fun family time, or enrolling kids in a summer camp or class. There are all types of summer camps and classes geared towards children and adolescents’ interests, such as art, STEM, outdoors, or dance. Summer activities can be very expensive, but some organizations offer fun half or whole day camps, classes, volunteer and/ or intern opportunities that peak many interests of children and adolescents at no cost or low cost to parents. Though there are those who will participate in camps, sports, family vacations, field trips, family time, or other fun activities, there are some kids who aren’t able to experience any of this. For them, summer is waiting around until the opportunities of the school year present themselves. The research services

team at Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida reported that children deprived of healthy stimulation can lose a significant amount of the skills they learn during the school year. Researchers call it “summer learning loss.” It can impact students at all grade and income levels, but its effect is strongest among low-income children. Summer learning loss can be prevented in the simplest ways possible. One big way is through reading, and many schools and libraries offer summer reading programs. Whether it’s short picture books or an entire book series, the goal is just to read and enjoy. The Shreve Memorial Library hosts a free summer reading program open to all ages. This year, the theme is Oceans of Possibilities. Registration will continue until August 15. Children up to age ten are encouraged to read at least five books, ages 11-17 are encouraged to read at least three books, and adults are encouraged to read at least two books. Participants will log their books online and receive digital badges for each book read. Those who complete the program will receive prizes like drawstring bags, books, pencils, and other assorted promotional items. Throughout the summer, there will also be live, interactive performances inspired by this year’s theme at the local branches. Another way parents can mentally stimulate their kids is by turning anything into a learning opportunity. Start a discussion about some things that your children are interested in, and then plan out a fun time to do a little Google research to find facts together. Parents can also buy or make fun learning workbooks for their kids to give them something to do on car rides or while watching TV. If kids are going to have screen time, why not push them towards educational screen time? There are educational games, online quizzes, and short videos or documentaries. Kids often see summer vacation as an opportunity to turn their brains off. There’s nothing wrong with letting your hair down a little during the summer, but it’s best to keep kids from completely checking out or breaking routines in the off-season.

As the guests entered the outdoor tent, they were greeted by champagne with a customized photo floating in the bubbly. The tent was adorned with beautiful chandeliers and a custom dance floor featuring the couple’s customized wedding crest. The guests enjoyed the entertainment provided by the performance band, Az-IzZ. The evening concluded with extravagant fireworks as the couple exited in a vehicle chosen by the groom while gold sparklers cascaded around them. The couple will reside in Shreveport with their two dogs, Rivers and Tito, following their honeymoon to St. Lucia.

very Caroline Bryan and Joseph Anthony Bingham were united in marriage on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at David Toms 265 Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Parents of the bride are Kevin and Donna Bryan, and the groom’s parents are Jeff and Connie Bingham. Avery and Joe love riding their tandem bike and chose “Let’s Ride” as the theme of the wedding. A beautiful sketch of tandem bike image enhanced the dance floor, and a tandem bike was parked nearby, with a beautiful floral bouquet in the basket. Garden and tea roses, ranunculus, peonies, eucalyptus, hydrangeas, snaps, tulips, bells of Ireland, and hypericum adorned the venue. Beautiful green bars were set up outside, along with plenty of lounge seating and round tables. Champagne was passed during cocktail hour and guests were treated to pasta, carving, salmon, charcuterie, and Louisiana-specialty stations. For dessert, cakes in four flavors were served. The five-tier round white wedding cake was decorated with a cascade of florals down the side. Sparkling overhead were 21 disco balls hung from the sail cloth tent. Guests had a great time taking photos in the photo booth, donning hats and glasses, and dancing into the evening. Avery and Joe exited the reception under a shower of sparklers and left in the same 1988 Jeep Wrangler that Avery’s parents drove away in from their wedding reception almost 32 years ago.

HEY!
WARRIOR B
It all started with the desire to make sure that McGuire’s military friends stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base had a place to go for Thanksgiving—to share the holiday with othJUNE 2022
The initial meal was held at the Old Reeves Marine building. Approximately 100 military members and families were fed. Afterwards, while cleaning up, a plan was hatched to incorporate a nonprofit with the mission to support, connect, equip, and mobilize the very core of every warrior. McGuire recalls, “We made a few phone calls, raised a little bit of money, got as many turkeys as we could find, and before we knew it, Thanksgiving 2014 rolled around.” Thus, becoming the first Every Warrior Thanksgiving Feast.

Founder and President Trey McGuire says, “We want to be that family for them, that herd of support around them, so when life happens, they get the opportunity to go through it with people who really do care for them.”

ers. In 2014, McGuire organized a potluck Thanksgiving dinner for military members who did not have a place to go for the holiday and “wanted to show them some love during that time.”

Fast forward to today. “We have so many more things that we do for military members, explains Vice President, Eric “Buzz” Hoffman. “I emphasize the word ‘do’ because action is our business. Too many of the veterans servicing agencies are lacking in services. In addition to Thanksgiving meals, Every Warrior provides counseling services, financial support, a free venue space, temporary furniture program, disabili-

ty support, food insecurity support, job location services, volunteer opportunities and transitioning services, and a Warrior Warehouse, which provides temporary household items for families.” For the past two years, due to Covid, they improvised with food trucks and fireworks outdoors. But the Every Warrior Thanksgiving dinner is returning to the Shreveport Convention Center in 2022. They want to not only feed the military members and their families, but also speak some words of encouragement to them, and provide a family atmosphere for those who go without visiting families because of the high cost of transportation or the distance they would have to cover. With summer just beginning, most people may not be thinking about fall. But planning for the dinner has already begun. “Every Warrior Thanksgiving feast is the current project that we are seeking support for,” says Hoffman, a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. “The meal can be expensive, averaging around $25 per person and we feed 800 to 1000 military members and their families.” How can you help? Every Warrior is offering an opportunity for donors to feed a family of four for $100 or to sponsor a table for $800. To donate or find more information, visit everywarrior.org. SBMAG.NET

LIPE Golf Impacting the World of
BY BYRON MAY
If
you threw out the name Jim Lipe at most family gatherings, you may get a blank stare. But if you mentioned his name at hundreds of top-rated golf courses around the world you would get either admiration for the amazing courses that members enjoy, or occasional anger for how challenging these courses can be. You see, Jim Lipe is a landscape architect and golf course designer and is considered one of the best in that industry. He has designed and managed the construction of elite golf properties throughout the U.S. and in several countries. For most of his career he has worked with Jack Nicklaus and his design group.

I’ve known Jim for close to 30 years. We were in the same weekend golf group at Southern Trace for over a decade. He’s been a really good player all his adult life. I knew Jim was involved in Golf Course design, but it wasn’t until the Spring of 1990 that I learned firsthand what a force he was in that industry. Jim invited our group to North and South Carolina to play the elite courses he and Nicklaus Design had either designed and built or renovated. Jim had become a big deal in the Nicklaus Design and Renovation business and a close friend and right-hand man of Jack Nicklaus. That week we played 6 of the most prestigious golf courses in the country including historic Pinehurst Number 2. We even stayed at the owner of Pinehurst National Golf Club’s house in North Carolina overlooking the 18th green as well as one of Jack’s homes on Pawleys Plantation Golf Club in South Carolina. For a golf nut like me, it was a trip that was as good
as it gets. On that trip I learned firsthand how admired Jim is in that industry. At every course we played we were treated like royalty because we were Jim’s guest. Pictures of Jack, Jim and course owners adorned the walls. Locally, Jim worked on the David Toms 265 Golf Academy and is currently in the process of revitalizing the Southern Trace Country Club course. I recently asked Jim to sit down with me and talk about his career. When did you decide to pursue golf course architecture as a profession? I graduated with a business degree at LSU, and I was drafted and got on the bus to head to Fort Polk. And for some reason, only the Lord knows, he diverted us to New Orleans. I flunked the physical. They told me to go home, have my knee operated on and report back in 10 months. A lot of things happened during that time. I had to make a decision if I was gonna go back to school. My dad always wanted me to be a lawyer. I always leaned toward golf course design. I didn’t really know if there was a profession there for me because at that point in time, we’re talking about 1969, there weren’t very many golf course architects. I took the test to get to law school. I could have gone there. I took the entrance exam to the Graduate School, and I did well there. I went over to the landscape architecture department at LSU, not knowing a thing about it. I walked in there and, low and behold, I found out that LSU was the number one landscape design school in the nation. And still is to this day. They accepted me. This was in the summer, and it just so happened—again, the Lord’s direction I believe—that fall they were going to take students in from other disciplines to enter into a three-year Master’s program. It just seemed perfect for me with my whole situation. My wife was working in Baton Rouge, and we were loving our life in Baton Rouge and so I entered that program, one of nine people. I was the only one to graduate on time.
What was the first job you had Jim Lipe in the business? has not A golf course aronly been chitect named a valued Bill Newcomb contributor to my hired me during golf course design a summer inbusiness for ternship, and almost 40 years, then he hired he has also been a great friend. friends. We’ve worked in New York, Sebonack, and Ferry Point. We’ve done a lot of things together with our wives. I think we’ve been to several Broadway shows together. Jack and Barbara asked my wife, Julianne, and I, to be their guest at the President’s Cup in South Africa. And we flew over there on the plane—we were their guests. That was unbelievable. But we’ve just become good friends. And so, we talk every couple of weeks these days and have a good friendship. We’re not doing as much work together because most of the work these days is renovation work. There’s not a lot of new stuff, at least in this country. There is in Europe and the Middle East and in in Asia, but not so much in this country yet. So, I chose to stay here in this country and work rather than doing all that travel—except to Mexico. I still go to Mexico and do all the work down there.

Over the years, how many golf course design projects or renovations have you been part of? You know, I’ve never counted them. It’s kind of strange because a lot of times I will start a project and then along the way, someone else will take it over or they will start a project and I will finish it. I have to believe it’s somewhere in the 250 range.
Could you describe the different phases a new golf course has from conception to completion? Well, you start off the process by working with the ownership to get the best piece of land. Sometimes that will be several trips, to several different pieces of land, like when I worked with Hal Sutton at Boot Ranch. We looked at three pieces of land before he settled on purchasing the present Boot Ranch parcel. Then I will embark upon doing several routings and working with the master plan ideas, trying to help the ownership develop a master plan. Once we settle on a routing plan, then we go into what we call construction drawings. The first and most important is the grading plan—that’s going to determine a lot of different things: your grassing plan, your irrigation plan, cut and fill plans, how much dirt you’re gonna be moving. And then we go from there. Whether it’s me, or if I’m working with Jack, he’ll make various trips like walking and staking early on and he’ll move things around and stake it and we’ll walk it and he’ll move things or change things, and then he’ll give me designs and he’ll do little sketches. From there we get into construction drawings and then we get into the actual green designs. Jack or I will draw up the green designs. We put together a construction package, put it out to bid, call contractors to the site. And we do what’s called a construction pre-bid walkthrough so that every contractor knows exactly what we’re trying to accomplish, so we can get the closest bids we can.
How do you think the renovation of Southern Trace golf course you’ve just completed stacks up against the elite courses in our state? Well, I think it’s definitely going to make a move way up the list. It had fallen kind of in disrepair, and it originally was very highly regarded. So from that aspect--from playability, difficulty, challenge, fun—it was always highly regarded. But since 1985 I don’t know how many golf courses have been built in this state, but some pretty darn good golf courses have been built in the state. So, will it make it all the way back up to the top where it once was? I probably doubt that. I know a lot of it is generated through different promotions and so forth. But I think it definitely will be highly regarded. We’re getting to have some state tournaments coming in. I think when the people in the state see the work we’ve done, they’re going to speak very highly of this club. Whether it’s to 1,2,3,4, I don’t know, but I think it’ll be way up there. What is the biggest challenge on taking a piece of land and turning it into a golf course masterpiece? Well, obviously, the great golf courses of the world are built on great pieces of land. You can’t turn a pasture into a great golf course. You can move a lot of dirt, but it would take 50 years for trees and everything to mature to a state where you would not know it was an original pasture.
Then we settle on a contractor and we go to work. And then I make site visits throughout the project as they do different phases of work. They might work on six holes. I make sure they understand what to do. They do that, I come back and go to another six holes or four holes or whatever it is. But I come when the contractor needs me for approvals. And then we look at other stuff. So it’s a continuous process of anywhere from a year to 18 months for a project. So it’s a lot like a house? It’s exactly like a house. It’s built in layers and stages, as you go through it. People ask me about renovations versus new designs. Renovations are much harder—for me—because of my critical eye. I see certain things that I’ve learned from Jack and I know what’s important to him. So, it’s important to me too. And that is making something look like it was the original terrain and that’s hard to do when you’re working with existing complex moundings, surrounds, drainage, all that sort of stuff. It’s very tedious and that’s why it’s so important for us to have such a good shaper. We have Cliff Hamilton on the project and when I tell him what I’m looking for, he understands it. It’s not like I have to stand there and beat it into his head. Of course, then you have the irrigation situation, which we had already put in new irrigation and now we had to pull out some of it. We tried to minimize that for cost reasons. But again, it’s all about the tie-in, so you don’t have hinges, you don’t have creases. It looks like it’s the original design. That’s the hard part of renovation. We did an excellent job at Southern Trace.
So, the hardest thing to do is find a great piece of land. Once you find a great piece of land, then it’s a matter of tying into that existing land, so, like I mentioned before, it doesn’t look like it you did anything. It looks like most of it was just there and that’s what people really enjoy. And when you can do that and come up with a very playable golf course that’s not very penal, it’s got some interest in the strategy and it makes you think. When you stand on tees—every tee out there— you should have some golfers thinking. It’s a thinking man’s game I think. If you just step up there and just don’t think about what you’re doing, just hit it, it’s kind of like the driving range. So, I think the hardest part is not messing up a great piece of land and doing your best on a difficult piece of SBMAG.NET

land, but trying to make it so it’s fun, it’s a challenge, it brings people back, they have controversy, they talk about it. All those kind of things is what makes golf interesting in my mind. What golf course design project do you consider your best, and why? Well. People always ask me, ‘what’s my favorite course I’ve done?’ I could name six or eight. I enjoyed the Boot Ranch project. I enjoyed working with Hal Sutton. It was a wonderful piece of land. And I really was into the whole philosophy of what he was trying to create. May River was wonderful. Cabo del Sol down in Mexico was a wonderful piece of property. Great Waters was a wonderful piece of land. Mayacama out in California, a fabulous piece of land. There’s Spring Creek Ranch in Memphis. I always enjoyed that project and I think it’s one of our best golf courses. So, there are several that when I’m there, you know, I’m just loving it. What project was the most challenging for you and why? Oh gosh, of all the ones I’ve done, the most challenging was in Taipei, Taiwan. It was built on the side of a mountain. It had nothing but cemeteries, all these temples and stuff built on the side of it. I had to route the golf course around all these temples, and we only had half a slope. So, we were always building a side slope and stacking them and that was almost impossible. What was the most expensive gold course design and build that you were involved in? I never really got a handle on what the Taiwanese spent on that, but I’m sure it was a good chunk of money. It wasn’t the most expensive. The most expensive by far was Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in New York because it was run by the New York Parks and Recreation Department and if it could be done expensively… It was a landfill that actually shut down in 1965. That golf course supposedly cost like $226 million. Now, the regular golf course itself, just built on that landfill would have cost about $15 million. So, the other $200 and odd was all the engineering and stuff to build on top of the landfill, catching every drop of water that hits it, not let it run off, it was just bizarre. It was an interesting project, and it’s a really, really, really good golf course. If you’re ever up in New York City, you should go play it. The only reason Trump’s name is involved is that the last six weeks before completing the project, Trump negotiated a maintenance contract to build a pro shop and a clubhouse and a maintenance building he would operate. He’s done a wonderful job. Now they’ve actually kicked him out since January 6th but he was doing a terrific job. Matter of fact, we were going to have a U.S. Open there in 2024. I sent you the pictures that were Trump and Jack and Mike Davis,

head of the USGA. We had a big meeting in Trump’s office. I can show you the plans where we were scheduled to alter two holes, but it didn’t happen because he and his wife came down the golden escalator not long after that meeting. Maybe six months. If you could design and build your own golf course, where would it be? Cabo. Because the weather is perfect 360 days a year. It’s got little mountains that works their way down to the ocean, the desert, the cactus, the palms. If you ever go to Cabo, you’ll never go anywhere else. With all your traveling around the globe, what made you and Juliana decide on Shreveport as your home base? Her family is from Natchitoches. I told her I’d bring her back to Louisiana because we’re big LSU fans and we have friends here, Connie and Jay Pierson. Connie lived across the street from Juliana when they were growing up and Connie introduced me to my wife, Juliana. Shreveport was close to Natchitoches. Of all the people that you’ve played with during your life, who would you consider the luckiest to be? This guy named Byron May. He’s never seen a tree that wouldn’t knock his ball back in the fairway.

RHEUMATOLOGY
ROBERT E. GOODMAN, M.D. Robert E. Goodman, M.D. is a Board Certified Rheumatologist at the Arthritis & Rheumatology Clinic in Shreveport. He combines his specialized training and 36 years of experience with personalized care to provide patients with the latest treatment options. WHAT SORT OF CONDITIONS DO RHEUMATOLOGISTS TREAT?
Rheumatologists diagnose and treat diseases that affect the body’s connective tissue, including more than 100 different diseases that can cause arthritis or inflammation of the joints and bones. Rheumatologists also specialize in diagnosing and treating certain autoimmune diseases and offer continuing care for patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Some of the diseases and conditions I diagnose and treat include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia, gout, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, polymyalgia rheumat-
ica, polymyositis, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome, & osteoporosis. WHAT IS YOUR TREATMENT APPROACH?
I work closely with each patient to personalize a plan that blends the most innovative approaches in rheumatology and arthritis treatments. There have been many advances and breakthroughs in the field of rheumatology that have led to better treatment options and continually improving outcomes for patients. For example, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues. It affects the lining of the joints causing painful inflammation, which can damage other parts of the body as well. The goal of treatment for RA is to reduce or stop inflammation as quickly as possible, and slow or stop disease activity. This
will achieve remission, meaning minimal or no signs or symptoms of active inflammation. With today’s available treatment options for RA, remission is more achievable than ever before. Although there is currently no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, remission sure feels like one. WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE FOR PATIENTS TO KNOW ABOUT ARTHRITIS AND RHEUMATIC CONDITIONS?
You are not alone. An estimated 50 million people in the United States of all ages and genders have arthritis or other rheumatic conditions. Since rheumatic disease affects everyone differently, the key to the best outcome is to work with your rheumatologist to learn what works best for you. Together we can make a big difference in how much your condition affects your quality of life so that you can continue to say yes to the things that are important to you and live your best life! FAMILY DENTISTRY HOOPER FAMILY DENTISTRY WHEN SHOULD I BRING MY CHILD TO START SEEING THE DENTIST?
A good rule of thumb is if you can see that their “baby” teeth are coming in, then it is probably a good time to go ahead and bring them in to see a dentist for a simple exam. The dentist can not only check their new teeth coming in, but also, and often, more importantly, their tongue, tonsils, and their airway. They also can check to see if any tethered tissues may be causing problems with nursing, feeding, talking, and even proper breathing. WHAT ARE TETHERED ORAL TISSUES?
Tethered oral tissues or “TOTS” for short are areas where there are restrictions in movement due to excessive tissue attachment. Everyone has probably heard the word “tongue-tied” at some point in their lives. Believe it or not, this is a real diagnosis and condition for lots of people! Along with tongue-ties, there
60
JUNE 2022

are also lip ties on the top lip! Infants born with these ‘TOTS’ can struggle tremendously nursing due to the inability to get a good latch. They also may snore at night due to the tongue not moving freely, thereby creating an airway concern. When they get to the point of trying to talk, they may struggle to speak properly and enunciate certain words. HOW CAN THESE “TIES” BE FIXED?
There are a couple of ways these problems can be revised in your child, and the sooner the revision, the better. One of the best options to “fix” these lip and tongue ties is with a medical laser. Similar to the way tattoos can be removed, we can use a special laser that can “cut” the tissues. It sounds like a terrible process, but actually, it is far easier than the traditional method of using either scissors or a scalpel. The
process as a whole takes no longer than 30 seconds with a properly trained doctor who has the right equipment. Lasers not only cut and relieve the restrictions, but they also cauterize the wound as the cutting is done, creating almost little to no bleeding. There are other post-procedure exercises the parent needs to perform with the child to prevent any reattaching of the tissues, but the reattachment after having laser revision is much lower than in the traditional method of using scissors or scalpel. If you have questions, it’s always best to consult with your doctors before deciding which method best fits your baby’s needs!

WHY SEE A PEDIATRIC DENTIST VS. A REGULAR DENTIST?
Pediatric dentists specialize in treating children. Dr. Gambill and his team have extensive experience working with children’s teeth and gums from infancy to their teenage years. We currently have four pediatric dental specialists serving our patients’ needs. HOW CAN I DO MY PART TO TEACH MY CHILD GOOD DENTAL HABITS?
Proper care of baby teeth is important for the future health and development of your child’s smile. Introduce your baby to oral hygiene by laying them in your lap and wiping a soft damp cloth gently over their gums. By the time your child is 2 years old, you may begin helping them brush their teeth twice a day with a soft brush and teaching them to floss.
ANY OTHER TIPS FOR A HEALTHY SMILE?
When possible, ensure your child has water to drink instead of sugary drinks or juices, and NEVER put your baby to bed with milk or juice. Avoid gummy vitamins, as they are full of sugar and stick to your baby’s teeth. DENTAL CARE IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE IT IS OKAY TO BE A KID AND HAVING FUN IS ENCOURAGED!
The team at Pediatric Dentistry of Shreveport Bossier encourages kids to have fun. We love to see them smile! One way we encourage excitement within the community is with regular visits from Twinkle, our very own Tooth Fairy! Twinkle loves to visit local schools and teach kids of all ages the importance of oral health and helping them learn to care for their smiles in a way that is informative and fun.

FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY LINDSEY PENNINGTON, MD FACIAL PLASTICS to be honest if those goals are unrealistic or only obtainable with something more invasive like surgery compared with non-invasive in-office procedures. It’s all about open communication.
Lindsey Pennington, M.D. and Skylar Souyoul, M.D.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE REASON PATIENTS COME IN TO SEE A COSMETIC FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON?
We, as women, are hard on ourselves. We spend hours every day trying to look our best. When we look great (and we know it!), that confidence just spills over into everything that we do. We offer patients an opportunity to discretely voice that insecurity, and we then come up with a plan to overcome it. For one woman, it may be some fine lines and wrinkles that she thinks age her. For many women, the natural loss of the shape of their upper lip keeps them from feeling young and attractive. For others, it may be a small post-partum change in how a woman carries her weight in her belly. Everyone is different and has their own specific reason! I brought on Dr. Souyoul as a board-certified Dermatologist because the complementary knowledge from our two medical specialties allows us to provide expert advice and services ranging from topical or prescription skin care to Botox and Juvéderm type fillers, non-invasive devices to address issues from head toe, or permanent surgical solutions that help with anything that may be preventing you from feeling like your best self. WHAT SERVICES DOES A COSMETIC FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON TYPICALLY OFFER?
I completed five years after medical school learning surgery exclusively on the head and neck. I spent another year after that training in detailed cosmetic surgery
of the head and neck. After that, I spent weeks at a time working with some of the most talented plastic surgeons in the world learning advanced techniques. I am more than prepared to offer any service from skincare advice to my most common surgeries such as a facelift, rhinoplasty (nose job), blepharoplasty (eyelid lifts), lip lift, and many others. I truly believe all of the surgical training makes my approach with Botox and fillers more detailed with superior results. I have seen and felt the different muscles and tissue layers of the face in the operating room too many times to count. I know where to place that Botox or filler to achieve the most refreshed and natural look. I have something to offer everyone, though. I am helping a number of men regrow hair with our advanced PRP (platelet-rich plasma) system. I have helped several children with traumatic scars, including some teenagers who are starting to notice those things more and more as they progress into adulthood. I am involved in ear piercings, ears that poke out too much, and cleft lip revisions. The treatments I prescribe are always individually tailored but can apply to a vast array of different ages, skin tones, or sex. WHAT THINGS SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A GOOD COSMETIC DOCTOR’S OFFICE?
The number one thing is a relationship with trust. Do you have similar styles and goals? Your cosmetic physician needs to be able to take the time to sit down and actually listen to those goals and vision of ideal beauty. They also must be able
For example, I am one of the only female private practice facial plastic surgeons in the region. There is a difference between men and women. I can understand and relate to my patients on such a deeper level. I have a 2-year-old and 4-year-old now; I remember how much I MISSED my Botox during that almost 2 years of pregnancy and breastfeeding with each kiddo! I just feel better about myself when I am getting it regularly. It’s the same with my skin. I know what it’s like not to feel like your best self, and I want nothing more than to help every woman reach that goal. It’s also another reason why adding Dr. Souyoul made so much sense. Not only is she an excellent board-certified medical dermatologist, but she shares those same experiences and values. OTHER PERTINENT QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT COSMETIC PHYSICIAN:
Are they board-certified physicians? Do you like their aesthetic? Ask to see before and after pictures of their results. Do they offer a full array of products and services, or will they have to refer you to multiple other offices for body treatments, skincare, or surgery? Do you feel rushed or pressured or like a number while you’re there? It’s so important to feel comfortable, have open communication, feel safe, and be supported on your journey.

I can’t find spark plugs—I don’t look there. As someone who looks at fertility almost every day of my life, I routinely find things that others miss. That isn’t their fault—it’s simply that we have technologies and perspectives that help couples more quickly, successfully, and affordably to get pregnant and stay pregnant. FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OFTEN GIVE THE ADVICE TO RELAX AND TAKE A VACATION OR A GLASS OF WINE AND THEN THINGS WILL HAPPEN. IS THIS USEFUL?
75% of women under age 35 who are having relations after stopping contraception get pregnant in three months. If it has been a year without success, odds are five to one against over the next several years, and a year and a half, the odds are ten to one against. It’s not that it can’t happen, but after a year is a good time to get the right advice. SO HIPS IN THE AIR, BOXERS INSTEAD OF BRIEFS, AND TAKING ROBITUSSIN WON’T HELP?
If those worked, fertility specialists would prescribe them. However, cold showers for the man won’t correct ovarian failure. Hips in the air won’t cause polyps or fibroids to go away. Having pineapple core won’t open blocked tubes. Much of fertility has an underlying medical cause that can’t be fixed through lifestyle changes. DOES FERTILITY TREATMENT MEAN IVF?
True infertility often has a spontaneous cure rate similar to cancer. I have an enormous respect for the power of IVF and regularly see all these babies that wouldn’t exist without it. However, just as not everyone needs chemotherapy, there are a lot of low-tech, low-cost solutions so we can save people money for the college fund and decorating the baby room. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE DO FIRST?
FERTILITY SPECIALISTS
Start with a consult and just get answers. We have breakthrough single visit testing that can go a long way. And then think positive—we see and help create miracles all the time!

NEUROSURGERY JOHN REEVES, M.D. HOW CAN I PREVENT BACK PAIN?
Unfortunately, most of us cannot. I get it from time to time. One can often mitigate against back pain by doing things your doctors recommend for your health in general. Maintaining or achieving an ideal body weight is important. Biomechanical physics say that for each 4 pounds of weight loss, you unload 16 pounds from the lower spine. Similar calculations have been worked out for other joints. Diet is important, as 90% of weight loss is governed by it. Many delicious foods with sugar and grains promote general inflammation…sorry, they are out. While you cannot lose weight solely by exercise, strength training is beneficial if not essential. It needs to be strenuous to build strength, so give the local physical and occupational therapists, strength trainers, and yoga instructors some business-they can help. WHEN SHOULD I SEE A NEUROSURGEON?
That is a very broad question. If you have had trauma and have severe disabling spine pain, you should see one promptly. If you have sudden severe spontaneous
pain that causes leg or arm pain with tingling, numbness, weakness of a set of muscles, incoordination, impairment of your capacity to walk or do your activities of daily living, you should get to an ER or your primary care doctor promptly for evaluation and a consultation to a neurosurgeon. For more chronic or indolent situations where a less intense version of these symptoms exists, you should still see a neurosurgeon. Speaking from an acknowledged bias that I share with my neuro and orthopedic spine surgery colleagues, the spine is our specialty and while we often rely on our colleagues for help, we should be involved rather early in the decision making. WHAT IF I HAVE A BRAIN TUMOR?
That is a very frightening situation. There are bad ones and not so bad ones. These are firmly within the neurosurgery specialty and I strongly advise neurosurgery consultation if you have one. Significant progress in survival has happened over the course of my career with glioblastoma and other related tumors. Tumor of the brain linings, also known as
meningioma, is usually less ominous. For some tumors, simple biopsy followed by chemotherapy and/or stereotactic radiotherapy is best. Tumors that spread to the brain from other locations are still a great challenge. Our colleagues in oncology have made great advancements. WHAT HAS YOUR CAREER LOOKED LIKE AS A NEUROSURGEON?
After I got out of neurosurgery residency at LSU New Orleans, I practiced in Shreveport briefly before an opportunity arose in Wichita Falls, Texas, that I took. They were underserved in neurosurgery and I immediately began to practice the entire gamut of neurosurgery-tumor, neurovascular, pediatric, degenerative and tumor spine, peripheral nerve, neurotrauma, plus a fair amount of medical neurology. I shared offices with orthopedic surgeons for 20 of those years, which considerably expanded my diagnostic and surgical skills. Realizing one cannot be a master of everything, as time passed my surgical practice evolved into spine surgery, brain surgeries, trauma, and nerve. Exhausted at being a practical “lone ranger” neurosurgeon for many of those years, I accepted an offer to return home to Shreveport, where I was raised. I still enjoy seeing the wide spectrum of neurosurgery problems because they are very interesting and challenging. It has been a fun career so far!

You will have the opportunity to see for yourself July 9th as Lance brings his show to the Rooftop of the Remington in downtown Shreveport. Lance was born to sing. At the age of three, he had his first solo, “Jesus Be a Fence All Around Me,” at the Little Union Baptist Church in Shreveport. His late mother, Brenda Wesley, recognized his gift and was instrumental in nurturing his love of music. She passed away when Lance was 16 years old, but her influence and support has long been a vital part of his success. The late Betty Akins, his piano and music teacher at South Highlands Elementary School, also contributed to the development of his many musical talents. He further developed his confidence in front of an audience with his membership in the Red River Children’s Choir. Lance got serious when, in 2016, he began building his music career. He has been on the rise ever since with a Pop R & B style that has become his signature. Inspired by his favorite artist, Michael Jackson (favorite song: Human Nature), Stevie Wonder, and Bruno Mars, Lance composes the music and writes the lyrics to his songs in his home studio. He choreographs every movement that brings dynamic energy to his shows. On July 9th he will be joined by two, exceptionally talented dancers: Rachel Jackson, who comes to Shreveport by way of the United Kingdom, and DaBY SEVA MAY nia Alvarez, who was the first dancer in his first music video. DJ Josh Scott will be on the mix.
LANCE THOMPSON bringing generations
TOGETHER H e has an infectious smile that radiates joy. His serious look is shadowed with calmness that is both composed and super cool. Lance Thompson, one of Shreveport’s own sons, is one of the most musically talented young men I have had the pleasure of meeting. He sings, he dances, he writes original music and lyrics and can entertain a diverse audience.

For those who have never tried it, dancing while singing high energy songs is no easy feat. Lance compares his shows to a roller coaster ride. He starts with a huge rush of energy, a twist to the right, a slow steady climb to the next peak, another burst of excitement, a left twist, and
a slow down before you get out of your seat. And just like every roller coaster, you cannot wait to get in line for the next ride. Lance “brings it” with energizing visuals and a unique vocal quality I have not heard in a while. His music has purpose and tells a story – a refreshing concept in today’s music. In addition to having a successful musical career, Lance has another goal. “To express unapologetically a love for God in a secular arena.” He believes that when you show sincere love with people, they will feel that love and be inspired to pass it on to someone else. He draws his inspiration from a personal relationship with the Lord, his life experiences, and his relationships with people. Among his many accomplishments, Lance won a Golden Ticket and went to Hollywood to compete on American Idol. He has performed throughout the state including headlining at the Red River Balloon Rally, the Red River Revel, and the State Fair of Louisiana. He was also the 2020 LA Music Prize winner, a division of the LA Prize Fest that was live streamed to thirty-seven states and nine countries despite the pandemic. He serves on the Shreveport Community Church Praise and Worship Team. Lance has succeeded in building bridges with his music, transcending age, race, ethnicity, and gender. He appeals to almost everyone and is just what we need in this crazy world. He has just returned from Prescott, Arizona, where a diverse group of fans were so enamored with his performance, they went with him from his first venue to the next one. That, my friends, is the very definition of “a following.” SBMAG.NET

Teaching Children
Water Survival Skills
It
The ISR program emphasizes that competence leads to confidence. “Once they become competent and know what they're doing, we see the love of the water come,” says Emma. There are programs that teach kids to enjoy the water first before learning any skills, but she thinks that may be dangerous. A child might be drawn to the water even more without having any skills. The ISR instructors encourage the kids to become skilled first, and then they encourage them to use the skills to have fun. They are survival skills, but

can take less than a minute for a child to drown.
Preliminary data from the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) shows that 25 infants and children died from drowning in 2021. Between 2017-19, drowning was the third leading cause of injury-related death in Louisiana children (0-14) with top risk factors being child unable to swim (96%), not supervised (72%) and no barriers to water (54%).

Extremely passionate about teaching water survival skills are Tara Hardin, Emma Burnett, Ashton Hardin, and Hallie Horne of ISR ArkLaTex. They are instructors certified through Infant Swim Resource (ISR), a national organization founded in 1966 by Dr. Harvey Barnett. The goal of ISR is to teach safety and survival. At a minimum, a child will learn to roll onto his or her back to float, rest, and breathe, and to maintain this position until help arrives. Children as young as six months can learn to save themselves. According to the ISR website, the ISR Self-Rescue® instruction for students is the product of over 45 years of research and achieves unparalleled results.
THINK BIG.
Tara is the mother of Emma and Ashton, and Hallie is her close friend. They are part of over 300,000 ISR graduates, and they are also CPR certified. ISR has over 800 documented survival stories, one which hits very close to home. Emma’s own son, Eddie, is proof that the ISR survival skills work. As a toddler, having already completed the ISR course, Eddie fell into a body of water adjacent to a pool. No one was aware that a grate covering had not been replaced af-

they can be used for recreational swimming as well.
To become a certified ISR instructor, individuals undergo two weeks of academic training and six weeks of in-water training, conducted by a master instructor.
ISR lessons are one-on-one for 10 minutes a day, five days a week, and last about four to six weeks. The child works with the same ISR instructor every day, so they pick up right where they left off the day before. “We teach the short, frequent lessons because that's how kids learn. When we watch our kids learning how to crawl or learning how to walk, we don’t see them practicing it for 30 minutes once a week. We see them doing it every day, little, short spurts of practice. So, we're meeting them with what their attention spans are able to handle. It’s physically challenging and a lot of work, so 10 minutes is enough,” Emma explains. “Initially, we see kids are nervous. They're not very comfortable in the beginning of lessons. We're asking them to do so many new things in a short amount of time. But our job

and what we get trained to do is to break those skills down in a way that meets each child's needs where they are. And in that way, it's a really gentle method. As they master those skills, we're constantly moving on to the next thing.”
ISR instructors aren’t completely on their own. They are supported with a host of resources through the national organization. Nurses have set medical protocols around placing the children in the water, taking them out, and the length of time that it’s safe to be underwater, so there’s guesswork. Instructors can reach out to master instructors with questions. “If we're having an especially difficult time with a child, we can take a video and send it in, and they'll let us know if there's anything within the lesson we can do to make the progress we're promising. There's no cookie cutter way to do this—you know they're all different,” says Emma.

Students can be as young as six months, but they must meet certain developmental milestones first. They need to be able to sit up unassisted. It helps if they can roll back to belly and belly to back. Crawling isn’t required but is beneficial to learn how to roll and float.

Emma offers advice for parents choosing a swim lesson. “I want people to know what to look out for that can help them choose the right kind of lessons for their kid, whether it's with us or somebody else. Look for those lessons that the instructor is helping them learn how to hold their breath immediately. Not blowing bubbles but holding their breath. Learning how to float and rest and breathe. Learning how to go into the water and get to the edge swimming horizontally, eyes down, kicking a little, using their arms a little. Holding their breath about three seconds is a good amount of time before they need a breath.”

One of their primary teaching locations is Southside Swim Club, where Tara Hardin is the head coach for both the High School/ Middle School Swim program and the Flying Fish Summer Swim Team. They teach traditional lessons for beginner/intermediate/advanced swimmers in addition to ISR survival skills there. “Here at Southside, we are providing the programs that see our students through from when they are babies who need to learn how to self-rescue all the way up through swim team! We work to get our young students safe first and then show them how to use their survival skills to have fun in the water and eventually be able to compete,” says Hardin.

ISR believes pool fences, supervision, and pool alarms are important parts of a necessary multi-layered approach to drowning prevention, but the core conviction is that the child is the most important part of a drowning prevention strategy. “Learning to swim is within us. We teach survival first,” says Emma.

MANOLOGY
Boost
makes sense. The little things like posture, a regular haircut, getting rid of the neckbeard, and taking care of your teeth—these all project attractiveness without a single word spoken. 3. Don’t Talk Endlessly About Yourself. There’s nothing more ill-mannered than someone who will not shut up about themselves. Truth-beknown, there are many reasons people talk endlessly about themselves, but a lot of those reasons boil down to anxiety, poor self-esteem and lack of confidence. They’re essentially constantly trying to sell themselves to the other person. I guess you can call it a conversation, BY ADAM BAILEY and that they’re worthy. Nonetheless, it’s gross and really turns women off. Instead, high-value men are confident in their skin, know their self-worth, and appreciate the value in making sure the other person in the conversation is enjoying themselves. After all, if you can listen and then make a woman laugh, you’re golden.
Your Confidence the Right Way
If
you want to be a high-quality man, then you should know what to avoid. Knowing these things are crucial traits you will want to take with you—forever. Men, we all know women can be a fickle bunch, and nobody wants to put in hard work and time on a prospective mate—making her go crazy for you—just to blow it by doing one of the things on this list. Here are five things high-value men should never do:
1. Don’t Use Pick Up Lines. Pickup lines are totally overrated and entirely unnecessary, yet, for some reason, men still love to collect and sometimes even try them out on unsuspecting women. The only purpose of a pickup line should be to initiate a conversation with a girl, and there are thousands of other much more effective ways to do that. Most women are much more likely to be turned on if you approach them like a well-adjusted adult. 2. Don’t Let Your Appearance Slide. A high-value person always pays attention to the details of his appearance. A study from the University of British Columbia found that a man who expresses pride in himself, especially the way he dresses, was the most attractive trait. And another study found men who look important exuded turn-on characteristics, which, if you think about it, completely

4. Don’t Be the “Nice” Guy. If you’re playing the role of the nice guy, you’re going to find yourself setting up permanent residence in the perpetual friend zone. Now, this doesn’t mean that you can’t legitimately be a nice guy. I’m not advocating for you to be a narcissist—just strong, confident, and assertive. This is opposed to a passive people-pleasing wimp. There’s a massive difference between being a genuinely nice guy who offers to help you move, and a guy that will say yes to anything. There is a huge mindset difference. The ‘nice guys finish last’ guy is a character. Not a man. High-value guys value themselves, their time, and those they care about. Be that guy. 5. Don’t Speak Bad about Other People. High-value men don’t gossip. Period. They don’t have a reason to. There’s no value in it, and they know it’s unattractive. Your mother told you this one when you were a kid. If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all. Instead, high-value men find a way to frame what’s bothering them in the most flattering light possible and give people the benefit of the doubt. Graciousness and the ability to forgive someone’s transgressions are not only attractive qualities, they’re virtuous.
Dream without boundaries

CADDO PARISH SHERIFF
STEVE PRATOR
A Force for Good
In
Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator’s office, a huge organizational chart of the department hangs on the wall. The desk is neat and tidy — nothing extra, and nothing out of place. Guests are welcome to sit across from Prator in a comfy wingback chair. Next to the chair is a side table with a lamp and a family Bible. The only thing that feels extraneous in the whole room is the plush cow next to the Bible. It’s the only hint in the room of his upbringing and his life outside of law enforcement. “Growing up, we worked, and worked hard,” Prator said. “I raised cows. I love farming, being outside. I can fix anything.” “I was very fortunate to have the dad and mom that I had. They raised me right to treat everybody the same. Dad always said, ‘A Prator’s no better than anybody else, but nobody’s better than a Prator.’ That’s the way you treat people, like we are all the same.” Prator was born in Clarksville, Tenn. The family moved to the North Highlands neighborhood in Shreveport when he was in the second grade. He went to North Highlands Elementary School and Hamilton Terrace. He attended Byrd High School his freshman year, then transferred and graduated from Northwood.

BY SCOTT “SCOOTER” ANDERSON
He also was active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. “I am proud of that,” he said. “That had a lot to do with where I stand today.” Prator admits that he wasn’t really ready when he took his next step after graduation and enrolled at LSU in Baton Rouge. “I was way too immature to be going to school,” Prator said. “I had gone down there on a scholarship. I had broken my foot in football. I went down on what was called a vocational rehabilitation scholarship. I primarily played and partied. School was not at the top of my list of things to do to have fun.” It was then that he fell into a career in law enforcement, almost literally. “I ended up falling off of the fraternity house,” he said. “I hurt my back. My father told me I was going to come home and grow up before I did any more college work.” So he returned to Shreveport. On Jan. 29, 1973, he started as an officer with the Shreveport Police Department. Without knowing it at the time, Prator had found exactly what he was looking for. “I didn’t grow up wanting to be a policeman,” he said. “But it had everything I needed. It was exciting, you got to help people, and it was outside. I didn’t have to sit at a desk, and that was perfect for me. I just fell in love with the job.”
In the next 19 years, Prator went on to work in a variety of departments — including robbery, homicide, and narcotics. He also formed the department’s first sex crimes unit. “I convinced my supervisor that you needed more specialization than just a detective working sex crimes,” Prator said. “I was fortunate enough to be involved in catching the Highland rapist.” In those 19 years he rose through the ranks to sergeant. Then he decided to take on another challenge. “When the chief’s job came open, I applied with 42 other people,” he said. “Somehow I got chosen as a sergeant to be chief.” That’s when he got another real-life education from his father. “I’ll never forget going to my father and asking him. ‘Dad, how do you fire somebody?’ I have ended up firing hundreds of people over the course of my 30 years of leadership. When I was with the Shreveport Police Department, my nickname was ‘Terminator Prator’ because I fired so many police officers, mostly because of lax hiring practices years earlier.” Prator served as chief of police for eight and a half years. It was time for him to pivot again. “At 27 years, I was able to retire from the police department, and I knew I wasn’t through with my career,” he said. “I retired and ran for sheriff. I got sworn in as sheriff in the year 2000.” With that new challenge came another new lesson, this time in the politics of public service. “Other than running for office, the job of sheriff is less political than the job of police chief,” he said. “As police chief, you answer to every politician; you answer to the mayor; you answer to the CAO; you answer to each of the city council members each time you go to a city council meeting. You answer to every pastor and every community leader. Everybody always feels like they are ‘over you.’ “When you get to be sheriff, and I didn’t realize this, all of a sudden it’s, ‘Can we have a minute of your time?’ I would much rather work for 250,000 people than I would for one person.” In Louisiana, the sheriff also serves as the tax collector — which put him in an interesting position at church one Sunday. “The pastor’s whole sermon was about how Jesus even hung around with the tax collector,” Prator said. “After the service, I told him, ‘That’s kind of a cheap shot. I’ve got to be the tax collector.’ Jesus hung around the sinners and the tax collectors. Well, I guess I fit both categories.” Faith has always been a cornerstone in Prator’s life. But he struggled early in his law enforcement career with reconciling these two areas of his life. “I had more trouble with it as a young officer,” he said. “I couldn’t understand how such bad things could happen to such good people. I had problems with the concept of me being the one to hold people accountable. As my faith matured, and as I matured as an officer, I realized that I was called into this profession. I was called into it to help keep people safe, and to separate those who will do evil from those who do good.”
Prator is especially focused on violent crime, like the rolling gun battle between two cars through the South Highlands neighborhood that killed a 13-year-old Caddo Middle Magnet student when she was struck inside her grandparents’ home by a stray bullet. Prator knows that violent crime is a complex issue. It includes homicides, suicides, domestic violence, and mass shootings, like that one at a school in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 21 people. In many cases, there are mental health issues and other extenuating circumstances, and it can be hard, he said, to feel that you are making an impact. But law enforcement can have an impact on what Prator calls “street-corner violence,” like the South Highlands shooting. “There’s two things there in ‘street-corner violence’ that I know we can impact,” Prator said. “One is offenders who are not being held accountable for illegal gun possession because of plea bargains and dismissed charges. The second part is the laws that allow us to hold them accountable.” Prator believe a holistic community approach is necessary to combat violent crime. He has an 11-point plan that calls on law enforcement, state and local government, schools, church leaders, neighborhood associations, business leaders and the media to all play a role. “Everybody has a dog in the hunt,” Prator said. “And if you think you are doing all you can right now, that tells me you are satisfied. And if you are satisfied with the way things are going when 13-year-olds and 10-year-olds are getting shot and killed in running gun battles, then you are misled and in the wrong profession. It’s not just the police’s job to keep people safe. Historically it always been, ‘What are the police going to do about this violent crime?’ My mission in life has been to shine the light on others who have a dog in the hunt also.”
Beyond his faith and his family values, Prator holds one passion that drives his work in law enforcement. “My passion is keeping people safe,” he said. “The criminal justice system is not broken, but it is certainly cracked.” It’s a singular focus he also appreciates in his favorite Hollywood lawman.
Prator knows the issue is not unique to Caddo Parish, but he knows this is where he can have the greatest impact right now. “I’m kind of a one-topic guy,” he said. “Until we do something about our violent crime, and holding people responsible who are committing violent crimes, and getting the proper laws to hold them responsible, I don’t see our area thriving. I realize it’s a national trend. But that doesn’t mean we have to be like the rest of the nation.”
“Clint Eastwood. I like all of his movies,” Prator said. “Andy Griffith? It’d be great if life was like that. but it’s not. He’s the great community-oriented police person. Matt Dillon? He’s a great role model. He was a step above Andy Griffith. I always liked Clint Eastwood because he could always get the job done.”

irds are an excellent pet for a home with children and also help teach children the responsibility of owning and caring for a pet. If you have limited space or limited funds, a pet bird or a pair of them just might be a good fit for you. Recently, birds have become very popular as pets. Pet birds have many positive attributes but very few negative characteristics. Birds are friendly and affectionate and offer great companionship…returning all the love you can give. They form strong relationships with people and make excellent companions. Birds don’t need to be walked, don’t have fleas, and don’t smell. Additionally, they are small and require less space than other pets. Another important factor is that pet birds are one of the cheapest pets to own and manage. If you are considering a bird as a pet, think about the following: BIRDS ARE INTELLIGENT Birds are, without a doubt, some of the smartest animals in the animal kingdom. They have a capacity to learn, which makes them fascinating as pets. Birds have excellent problem-solving and cognitive skills. Once a bird bonds with its owner, it learns and reacts to human behavior. EASY TO CARE FOR Birds can be locked inside their cages when you are gone from home or when you are busy. Therefore, housebreak-

ing is generally not an issue, and because they are relatively small, training them can be less demanding than working with larger animals. This makes them a suitable choice of pet for the young, elderly, or disabled. MINIMAL GROOMING Birds are naturally very hygienic; bird owners can usually maintain their pet’s health and good looks with a quick nail trim, a feather clipping now and then, and a non-chlorinated shower of water once or twice a week.
VERY SOCIAL CREATURES A bird is a great choice if you want a pet that will form a strong bond with you. With proper training and socialization, birds are as loving and affectionate as cats or dogs. Some birds become inseparable from their owners. They can also be easily trained to do simple tasks and tricks for you since they are excellent at mimicry. FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE TO FEED Birds eat a very small amount of food each day relative to other types of pets, and the highest quality bird feed is less expensive than the protein-packed products required for dogs and cats. It is essential to provide birds with a high-quality pellet diet; however, they also greatly benefit from fresh fruits and vegetables. Your bird will love the end pieces you would normally cut from vegetables and fruits and discard. Just make sure that the foods you share are safe and not toxic to birds.

DO NOT REQUIRE A LOT OF SPACE Small bird species such as budgies, canaries, and finches make lovely pets for people with limited space. A small bird’s cage can easily fit into a cozy living space. LONG-LIVED COMPANIONS Many bird species live extremely long lives, some living over 100 years! This often eases the concerns of people wanting a pet they can love and enjoy for many years, especially if children are involved.
Birds make wonderful pets. They are able to thrive in a caring and loving household. However, remember that different species of birds have different needs, and it’s important to be aware of a bird’s temperament, behavior, diet, and living requirements before choosing a pet bird. The right bird breed can make an excellent feathered friend for you and your family! SBMAG.NET

Summer time Food AND Drink Bucket List
BY ADAM BAILEY
S
ummer is the best. The days are warmer, longer, and just happier. In addition to family vacations, summer is also one of the best seasons for eating and drinking. There’s ample produce ripe for the picking (and cooking), and it’s prime patio season for restaurants, bars, and breweries. Here are some food-related activities to add to your food bucket list and complete before Labor Day.
1. MAKE ICE CREAM. Everyone loves ice cream! But did you know you can easily make this summertime dessert at home? You don’t need an ice cream maker to do it, either. You can keep it simple with a strawberry soft serve or a kid-friendly cake batter ice cream or get creative with PB&J-inspired or a unique goat cheese ice cream. 2. PERFECT YOUR GUACAMOLE RECIPE. Guacamole is a go-to party food any time of the year, but there’s something especially satisfying about this creamy, cold dip in the summertime. Learn the basics of making a great guac and then play around with the flavors. Mix in tomatoes or jalapenos, or get more creative with roasted garlic, bacon, or beans in your avocado dip.

3. EAT AT A FOOD TRUCK. There’s a special kind of joy in eating at a food truck, especially when they have niche and unusual offerings. Waffle sandwiches, Mexican street corn, and outrageous burgers all make for perfect summer eats.
4. PICKLE SOMETHING. Nothing goes with chargrilled burgers or hot dogs quite like pickled veggies so pickle something yourself this summer using your garden’s bounty! Bread and butter pickles are a classic option, but if you aren’t feeling cucumbers, you can pickle green beans, jalapenos, onions, or cauliflower. 5. GO FRUIT PICKING. You may associate picking your own fruit with apples in the fall, but you still can head to an orchard in the summer and get any number of berries straight off the vine. Of course, nothing is better than a sun-kissed strawberry or blueberry you picked yourself.
Adventure YO U R WAY !
6. HOST A POTLUCK. Everyone loves a dinner party, but few love preparing every last thing themselves. The solution: A good old-fashioned potluck. If you’re hosting, supply an entree and an impressive dessert. Let your friends bring the rest. 7. DRINK OUTSIDE. There’s a particular pleasure in drinking outside in the summertime. An ice-cold beer or freshly made cocktail tastes better on a back deck. It’s even better if you’re drinking something frozen. 8. PICK THE PERFECT WATERMELON. Summer is the best season for fruit, and refreshing, sweet and hydrating watermelon is the best kind of summer eat. But before you buy this big ol’ fruit, it’s important to know how to pick the perfect watermelon.
Take a day trip or weekend! Discover B&Bs, a winery and bakeries, along with a variety of cafes and restaurants. Check out gift shops and clothing boutiques. Explore historic sites, take scenic drives and get some of the best gas station eats around! Check out itineraries on our site and plan your trip now.

9. ROAST MARSHMALLOWS AND MAKE S’MORES. Make this the summer of perfect s’mores by building a fire in your yard, sitting around with skewers, and toasting your marshmallows to perfection. Then, build a classic treat with a milk chocolate bar and a graham cracker. If you don’t have a yard for a fire, don’t worry, you can make toasted marshmallow s’mores in your oven. 10. EXPERIENCE SOUTHERN BBQ. Barbecue just tastes better in the summer. If you can, smoke some Texas-style brisket at home. But if you’d rather leave it up to the pros, we don’t blame you. Just make sure you know all the BBQ styles before diving into that pulled pork! 11. ENJOY A BOTTOMLESS BRUNCH. For many, especially after a late Saturday night, brunch is the most important meal of the day, and a bottomless brunch is the best type of brunch you can get. 12. EAT RAW OYSTERS. Trust me—raw oysters are actually quite tasty. But if you’re straddling the fence and don’t want to commit, settle for some fried or charbroiled oysters. Just remember, the world is your oyster.
Sooter’s offers in-home or outbound personal chef services from meal planning, meal prep, and event planning. We have shrimp remoulade, salad dressing, and party dip for crawfish, seafood, and even deviled eggs! Fire up the grill and your food with fresh-made sauces! Shhhh... nobody has to know you didn’t make them yourself. Top your burgers, hot dogs, fajitas, tacos, and quesadillas with Sooter’s Salsa Verde to add amazing flavor and spice to your meals.
AVA I L A B L E F O R O R D E R A N D D E L I V E RY O NL I NE!
13. MIX UP SOME MARGARITAS While you’re indulging in some summertime sips, make sure to add “learn how to make a marvelous margarita” to your summertime to-do list. After you master the basics, you can level up to flavored margaritas and spicy margaritas. 14. EAT A MANGO WHILE TAKING A BATH. Nothing—I repeat, nothing—is quite as pleasing as drawing a bath with a perfectly ripe mango. What better place to eat a mango than while taking a bath? Refreshing and tasty, with the ability to wash off all the messiness.

Fruit Kebabs
S
ummer is here! The evenings are warm and light, and everyone is enjoying the sunshine. Because of the heat, it is a good idea to keep meals light and relaxed, for example, fruit! Melon is always so refreshing, and these melon fruit kebabs make the perfect healthy snack idea for summer. As well as tasting delicious, they look pretty too, and if you want a mini-project to keep the kids occupied during the summer holidays, why not let them make their own fruit kebabs? They’ll have loads of fun cutting out their favorite shapes, threading them all together on the skewers in whatever patterns their imaginations can come up with. These sweet and juicy fruit kebabs make the perfect refreshing summer treat.

Start by cutting a round slice from each melon, roughly 1 inch thick. Using mini cookie cutters, cut shapes from the melon slices. You can use any shapes you like. Scoop any seeds from the remaining melon with a spoon and discard them. Using a melon baller, cut spheres from the remaining melon and pop them into bowls until ready to use. Thread the melon balls and shapes onto the skewers, alternating colors and shapes to make pretty patterns. Place on a plate or in a storage container, cover, and store in the fridge until ready to serve. Enjoy!

Vanilla ice cream T
his old-fashioned vanilla ice cream recipe will cool you off and bring back happy childhood memories! It only takes five ingredients and less than an hour to make this delicious dessert! This ice cream is rich, soft, frosty, and full of that real vanilla flavor. Even though most of us buy ice cream in the store, tasty vanilla ice cream is not that hard to make at home! It also has a unique taste and texture that is hard to find in store. If you are looking for a wonderfully tasty, cold treat, you will love this recipe. Of course, you will need an ice cream maker, but it’s worth the investment if you love homemade ice cream. You can enjoy making and serving homemade ice cream for all celebrations: birthdays, holidays, etc. It’s an easy way to create a special dessert that everyone will enjoy, especially the kids.
INGREDIENTS Ѭ Ѭ Ѭ Ѭ Ѭ
2 large eggs ¾ cup sugar 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup whole milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
INSTRUCTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4.
5. 6.
Beat eggs with an electric mixer until light and foamy, about 1 minute. Slowly add the sugar and continue mixing until blended. Add cream, vanilla, and milk, blending until combined. Pour into the ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In about 30 minutes, the result should be delicious, soft-serve vanilla ice cream. For firmer ice cream, transfer the ice cream to a freezer-safe container and freeze for 4 to 6 hours. Enjoy!

AND ANOTHER THING…
Dear Jimmy, Why they decided you needed to be flying a helicopter I don’t know, but your daddy tells me you’ve been doing good at it. That’s saying something as I know R.D. Sheets is hard to please. Before you were born, him and my Hank vowed they had to taste every bottle of whiskey in a store before they could decide which one they wanted to drink for the night. They thought for the longest time that me and your mother felt that was a good excuse. I never thought either of them would quit drinking, but they did, and if you don’t believe in miracles, you should after knowing that. Which is why I expect to see you walking up our driveway any day now.
That Summer When Summer Was Cold BY TEDDY ALLEN
H
ere we are between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, two holidays we celebrate because other people in another time didn’t feel much like celebrating.
They were in a bind, and just wanted to live. Some of them did. Not all of them. My little town seemed so far removed from Vietnam … I was 10 in 1969 and didn’t even know where Pittsburgh was, much less Southeast Asia. But the older and wiser folks in my town did, some of them parents. How much it hurt them, how much it confused them, I was not mature enough to understand. Jimmy was 18. One day he was buying me ice cream cones at the Dairy Maid, the next he was flying a helicopter in Vietnam. I couldn’t understand … Aunt Daisy was tough as barbed wire and funny and she could intimidate you if you didn’t know her. I knew her. Loved her. And she loved me. And she loved Jimmy. She wrote him about every other day he was gone. That helped me understand. At least a little bit. Helped me understand that whatever was happening was a big deal. She kept writing him even after he went missing in action. I don’t know for sure what she wrote, but I can imagine…
100
JUNE 2022
| SBMAG.NET
Of course I don’t know exactly where you are over there, and even if I did I couldn’t pronounce the name of the town. While you’re over there, why not talk the Southeast Asian people into naming places that make sense, like Sunrise or Rock City or Dillon. If I lived over there I couldn’t tell anybody my address because I wouldn’t know how to say it. They’re either too short on consonants and long on vowels or the other way around. Fix that, Jimmy? It’ll give you something to do and me something to take credit for. Nothing much to report here. We’re still trying to get a preacher. We’ve had all the success of a boy mouse in a roomful of girl cats so far. Last week Farmer started talking in the middle of preaching, without meaning to. Him and the Scrap Iron Quartet sung a couple, then about halfway through our substitute preacher’s talk, here Farmer went. I know it don’t surprise you to hear he was sleeping in church as that’s what he always does. But by god he’s always there, ain’t he. So he’d plowed ’til church time as always, then about halfway through the sermon Farmer, deep in slumber and obviously dreaming, hollers out real loud like, “Whoa! Whoa!” None of us paid it much mind but it shook the visiting preacher up pretty good. Maggie is getting prettier every day. I think she’s in her room writing you a letter right now. We talk about you, son, and hope you get our letters. If you can keep from wrecking that plane they’re idiot enough to let you fly, I might let you drive the Falcon again when you get home. Love, Aunt Daisy
I didn’t know until much later that she’d sent those letters so often because she had no idea how long it took a letter to get to someone in the United States Armed Forces. She just wanted Jimmy to have news from home. News, and love. If you know a soldier, pick up a pen or pencil.
