Valorisation of Public Realm of Kota Gede, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

KUE KUE!!

Special Region of Yogyakarta

Kotagede is a historic neighborhood in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The name was also used for the administrative district (kecamatan) of the same name in the City of Yogyakarta. Kotagede contains the remains of the first capital of Mataram Sultanate, established in the 16th century. Some of the remains of the old Kotagede are remains of the palace, the royal cemetery, the royal mosque, and defensive walls and moats. Kotagede is well known internationally by its silver crafting.

Kotagede

our site is located at southwest of the kota gede along the river of gajah wong. the Gajah Wong River is one of the river that divides the city Yogyakarta. Upstream section located on the slopes of Merapi Sleman , while downstream were in Bantul. Gajah Wong River is aquatic ecosystems whose existence was strongly influenced by the activity or activities in the vicinity or in watersheds. Sungai Gajah Wong is now a very ironic situation , water pollution river has been quite severe . Every day , a variety of solid and liquid waste dumped into this river . It is more alarming , liquid waste originating from various factories along the banks of the river have to contain heavy metals , toxic materials , oil , minerals , etc

issues & dilemma

THE GATED (PROTECTED) COMMUNITY IN KOTA GEDE WHO LIVE IN TRADITIONAL BUILDING TYPOLOGY FACING A PROBLEM TO DEVELOP A NEW DWELLING IN THAT AREA SINCE IT IS ALREADY CRAMPED AND CONGESTED WITH OLD DWELLINGS THAT OCCUPIED THE SPACE. TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEM, MOST OF THE HABITANTS PARTICULARLY THE NEW GENERATION DEVELOP THEIR NEW DWELLINGS ON THE OPEN AREA ALONG THE KOTA GEDE THAT CREATE NEW SETTLEMENT THAT CALLED KAMPUNG COMMUNITY.

BUT, WITH NO PROPER PLANNING FOR THE NEW SETTLEMENT LEAD THE SAME PROBLEMTHAT THEY HAD FACING BEFORE. LACK OF OPEN SPACE AND PUBLIC SPACE.

LACK OF ACTIVITIES HAPPENED IN THIS AREA THAT LEAD TO DEAD AND QUIET RESIDENTIAL

SEGGREGATED COMMUNITIES NO FACILITIES AND COMMUNAL

NO SURVAILLANCE CHILDREN CANNOT PLAY

CRIME BECAUSE OF LEAD TO

LOW SOCIAL INTERACTION

“Our lack of community is intensely painful. A TV talk show is not community. A couple of hours in a church pew each Sabbath is not community. A multinational corporation is neither a human nor a community, and in the sweatshops, defiled agribusiness fields, genetic mutation labs, ecological dead zones, the inhumanity is showing. Without genuine spiritual community, life becomes a struggle so lonely and grim that even Hillary Clinton has admitted

it takes a village .

David James Duncan (novelist)

problem statement While terrace housing has advantages in respect of cost and efficiency of land use, social features suffer. In a terrace housing estate, the road is public space that fronts each house and it is designed for the car rather than pedestrian, erndering it less suitable for social ianteraction and unsuitable as a play area for smaller children. The road is also a public domain, accessible for not only to residents and their guests, but also to uninvinted strangers and potential criminals.

But why should the terrace house estate lack of ‘genuine sense of community despite the provision of communal facilities like a surau, a multi-purpose hall, playground equipment, etc? Certainly, the new migrants to the urban areas in Malaysia generally miss the sense of neighbourhood found in kampongs and small towns they come from.

Research conducted in the developed, highly urbanized, ‘western’ world proposes that, compared with previous generations, children spend less time playing outdoors (Tranter, 1996). This study show that children nowadays prefer to play inside the house rather than playing outside. This scenario happens because of a few reasons such as safety.According to the study conducted by Lau (2012), she found that almost half of preschool children do not venture outside to play each day. This scenario may lead to the unhealthy lifestyle and a slow learning development for children.

“Playing spaces are important because they allow children in the community to interact with one another and thus indirectly create a sense of community in that particular housing area.” Latfi, Muhammad Faez Mohd, & Karim, Hafazah Abdul. (2012).

INCREASE THE ECONOMY OF LOCAL PEOPLE BY PRODUCE OWN LOCAL PRODUCT AND SELL IT. PRODUCE EDUCATED COMMUNITY IN AQUACULTURE AND AGROCULTURE CREATING A VIBRANT ENVIRONMENT THROUGH ANNUAL EVENT AND COMMUNAL SPACES ENCOURAGE THE USAGE OF GREEN TECHNOLOGY TOWARDS ZERO CARBON EMISSION ENCOURAGE THE USAGE OF HYDROPHONIC / VERTICAL FARMING AND RAIN WATER HARVESTING TOWARDS THE RESILIENT CITY INCREASE THE GREEN AREA BY MAKING THE PARK AS THE MAIN LINKAGES IN THE CITIES

The idea was inspired by the protagonist in the best well known Malaysian cartoon artist, Lat’s cartoon which is a pre-school child, named Lat. His experience of growing up in his village community with his family and childhood friends is by no means unique. Lat’s cartoon strike a common chord and these childhood memories are in sharp contrast to the experience of small children in the present day.

For the the vertical residential on every floor, the usage of the communal garden is the main element in bringing and strengthens the community among resident as the village while forming a green lung for the city.

For the horizontal residential, every unit will be injected with farming program along the street front lane and also back lane for the residents to create a natural survaillance around the housing estate

My vision for this project is a multi-generational village that will be alive The plan is to increase the social interaction between resident start from the childhood stages. As the wise said, “strike the iron while it’s hot”.

“Don’t buy the house, buy the neighborhood.”

“...as the people, with the people, for the people!!
