Soul Strings Empowering Creative Individuals in the Journey to Self Expression
Callie Walton, Degree Candidate Albert Marichal, Thesis Advisor Submitted for the requirements of the degree Bachelor of Science in Interior Design Texas Christian University College of Fine Arts Spring 2019
Dedicated to... I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep sense of graditude to all of those people whom this project could have never been completed. I would like to thank my parents for their unconditional support and allowing me to further my studies. My dad, for giving me the main source of this project’s inspiration that I needed to build a dream and chase after it. My mom, for supporting me with constant encouragement and believing that I have the talent to reach my goals. I would also like to thank my closest friends for their faith and support throughout this final semester at TCU. Sophie Edwards and Devin Gallemore, especially, have given me an infinite amount of courage and optimism that helped my design become a reality. The support that I kindly received from all of these people has made me understand the goal to success is to surround yourself with uplifting people who inspire and help you believe in yourself.

Precedent #1: Berklee College of Music 160 Massachusetts Avenue
Project Name: 160 Massachusetts Avenue Owner: Berklee College Of Music Project Location: Boston, Ma Size: 176,000 Sf Completion: Spring 2014 Uses: Freshman Housing, Dining Hall, Music Technology Spaces, Academic Spaces, Ground Floor Retail
Exterior Facade
Community Connections Fronting on Massachusetts avenue, our new multi-use residence hall for Berklee college of music strengthens the college’s multiple connections to the city of Boston. The transparent facade reveals the life of the building while creating an active urban street edge. The building includes: freshman housing, two story dining hall with 4000 seats/performance space overlooking the street, academic spaces, music technology spaces for student activity, gathering spaces, and ground- loor retail.
14
Community connections can positively affect students. Students are able to see and interact with the world while developing their own vision for what kind of artist they want to be. It’s about growing as a human being, not just as a musician. Opening the buildings interior to the public allows for more open minds and collaboration within the building. It is important to nurture students because they are the future leaders. As designers it is important to provide open spaces that inspire students and give them as many opportunities as they can to grow.

Precedent #2: The Manhattan Center
311 West 34th Street In Midtown Manhattan Events. Performance. Production. The One Place In New York Where It All Comes Together The Manhattan center is the only venue in New York city that hosts major events, major concerts and major tv and audio productions. We do that by employing a full-time staff of event account managers, logistical experts, lighting designers plus the industry’s most experienced team of tv and audio engineers.
The Manhattan Center: Black Box Theater
Branding Opportunities The Hammerstein and the grand provide a nearly infinite opportunity for you to leverage your brand. From outdoor pavilions, to illuminated signing, to balcony banners, elevator wraps, and electronic messaging boards, we’ve got your brand covered
16
Accomodations Connected to the Manhattan center and just a few steps from Broadway, Penn station, Madison square garden and the Javits center, the New Yorker provides preferred hotel accommodations for guests with rooms designed and finished with period architecture and furnishing.
Performance
The grand artists from around the world looking for offthe-chart acoustics and a more intimate setting for their music, look to the grand to provide both. This 10,000 square-foot space with 40-foot high vaulted ceilings, has hosted performers including Bowie, bon Jovi, Timberlake and crow. And, like the Hammerstein, the grand provides contemporary performers with 21st century entertainment production technology that seamlessly combines live events with in-house tv/audio recording studios and state-of-the-art post-production suites.
Production Services Includes the city’s top audio, lighting, tv and audio engineers under one roof. By working with our newly installed state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, they can manage any event seamlessly from start to finish including: product launches, gala events, trade and fashion shows, meetings, conferences, tv production, and concerts.

Built in the sanctuary of a 100-year-old church, Studio A houses a 38′ x 50′ main room with 30′ ceilings, four large Iso Booths and stained glass windows. The 25′ x 32′ x 16′ Control Room features a custom 80-input + 64-monitor, all discreet neve 8078., the largest of its type in the world. The large room has ideal acoustic dimensions where you can get that “big rock and roll drum” sound or record an 80-piece orchestra. The Lounge-A is conveniently located directly below the a control room. It is equipped with a full kitchen, entertainment center, billiards table, a large couch and dining table as well as private bathrooms. It’s an ideal space for band meals, catered events, or just relaxing while the other musicians perfect their parts in the studio above.
Materials for Acoustics Tracking room: in order to get a live, organic sound, the room has to work as giant equalizer. In order to do this you must achieve a good balance between “sonic character” and “acoustical problems.” The room must have an absorbant ceiling and reflective floor (or vis versa). The Belmont tracking room has wood flooring with reflective qualities. The tall ceiling is absorbent with the installation of a drop ceiling with acoustical panels. Stone walls in a live room produce an impressive ambience for acoustic instruments.
Iso Booth Room: in order to get a live, organic sound, the room has to work as a giant diffuser. The more acoustic panels are utilized in a room, the higher the cut back will be on the influence within the space. This means there is a higher reduction rate in the amplitude of sound waves from the dissipation of sound energy as heat. Spatial Structure The overall building adds immersive sound, audio facilities, and audio engineering technology with music business, motion pictures, media studies, songwriting and entertainment industry studies together under one roof. From an educational standpoint, it is important to look at the film and recording systems so that rooms are collaborative with each other so any student can enter the building and truly put their hands on the full production experience in one space. 19

Bio I am originally from Charlotte, North Carolina and am a senior at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. I am a fourth-year student in the Interior Design Program with a minor in Architectural Lighting Design. Apart from TCU program I am also one of the founders as well as the current treasurer of TCU’s IIDA program. DESIGN STATEMENT: “I believe that the power of a sustainable, innovative, and nurturing environment comes from the little things; the design details that we, as designers in all fields, can compose to brighten and enhance the human experience, creating a better world through the formation of architecture.” 53
