Sound-Breaking: “breaking” implies innovation — something new, something iconoclastic, something that hasn’t been done before. “Sound” is a metaphor for a strong, stable institution. Sound-Breaking is what recording studios hope to be, both literally, with a brand-new building, and metaphorically, with new programs and innovation. Through the transformation of the current model of higher education, Soul Strings’ establishment provides the necessary resources within a communal, educational, and uplifting space to empower creative individuals to exceed their potential in their compositional journey to self-expression. Soul Strings, as a global laboratory that promotes the power of music, provides interactive and collaborative experiences that create a new perspective for musical discovery and artistry. The biggest single need within the music industry is an affordable business that provides an inspiring environment for the unbelievably talented generations of young creative minds to wiser more experienced adults, as well as students from all over around the world who want to change the world with music. Providing a place where creative experiences sprout from the establishment of relationships and advanced technology; this Sound-Breaking movement is designed to help people support each other more effectively while in the musical business, so everyone can enjoy music and have the experience they deserve.
Performance / Event Space (2065 ft2 Extending into an Outdoor Stage Area 800 ft2) The performance area is a place dedicated to hosting shows to advertise the company while benefitting and exposing young new artists in the community. This area has an indoor/ outdoor stage that can be used for small or large concerts. The performance area includes the stage (800 ft2 inside; 800 ft2 outside), the green room (180 ft2), seating areas configured from the educational / collaborative space (on the ground floor: 3487.5ft2; and upper balcony levels accessed from the first floor: 825ft2), and all technical control rooms (1837ft2), as well as production control rooms (1045ft2). The technical control rooms within the venue include the general control room (180ft2), the lighting and stage manager control room (180 ft2), the acoustical control room (120 ft2), the follow spot booth (225 ft2), the sound rack room 80 ft2), and the dimmer room (80 ft2). The general performance area has a rectangular shape with varying types of acoustic treatments. The stage also has a rectangular shape with a circular center that has a built-in stage lifting platform connecting the orchestra pit in the basement to the venue’s first floor. The Performance area lighting will consist of full lighting, work light, surface mount, chandeliers, wall wash, indirect lighting, and decorative colored lamps for mood and design. The large performance area will expand into the largest area of the recording studio with its tall ceiling height which benefit any live recording sessions. Within the indoor performance area there are adjustable ceiling panels that can be manipulated to lower the ceiling height and achieve different sounds.
Exterior Facing North
There are two main spaces associated with the Composition section of Soul Strings’ Programming. The first space is a recording station, located on the basement floor, that includes a Live Room (530ft2), Control Room (530ft2), 3 Isolation Booths (each 150ft2), and 3 Sound Lock Rooms (each 150ft2). Acoustically structured windows are installed within Control Rooms and Isolation Booths to make communication easier during recording sessions and promote multi-track collaborations. The Live Room has a large uniform “sweet spot” with the use of a variety of absorbers tuned from the floor all the way to the ceiling along with hard reflective paneling and wood slats to angled splayed walls. On the other hand, the front of the control room has a six-inch absorbent wall, on top of a ridged mass loaded wall. The lighting within the recording space creates can be manipulated for high intensity or dimly lit scenes for the creation of mood lighting that enhances creativity for the aid in visual acuity regarding maintenance needs. The second area within Soul Strings’ Composition Program is located on the main floor and consists of 12 modules situated along the exterior walls of the building on either side. Each module consists of an isolation booth for recording as well as an adjacent room dedicated to media and technical audio editing to apply after recording sessions. These iso booths include a framing of a 9” deep absorber and an uncovered absorber as well as diaphragmatic membranes filled well absorbers. Slats on the face help keep some of the high frequency from being absorbed and increase efficiency as reflections are redirected back into the absorber. Individuals or groups up to 2 or 3 people can reserve a recording module for their own benefit of learning how to record and practice within an isolated space.

These windows create a connection between Soul Strings and the traditional preexisting building because they are modern with their symbolic figures that emphasize universally recognizable objects abstracted to the essential geometric form of their use and manufacturer.
Administration Spaces (1045 ft2) Administration spaces include the reception, all employee offices, and back of house / front of house storage for use of educational or performance services within Soul Strings. The reception has a total of 1440 ft2 and consists of ticket sales, info sessions, access to bathrooms, and seating. Front and Back of house storage provide a total of 1045 ft2 and include housekeeping storage (125 ft2 each) and a janitor’s closet (40 ft2 each). Soul Strings houses 12 offices (each 140 ft2) to provide enough room for multiple tutoring sessions.
Educational Area
Educational and Collaborative Area (5150 ft2) This area provides educational opportunities to the public such as presentations that reveal techniques and strategies on how to record, compose, and perform music. This area also provides an open space for people to network and collaborate with other people in the community that enjoy music. The area will include a combination of work stations with sufficient lighting and private/ public seating options to accommodate to everyone’s needs for privacy. Acoustical treatments will be implemented throughout the space to prevent any sound from entering recording studios and separate isolation booths. This area can also be identified as a lounge that includes a full kitchen, entertainment center, seating, and access to bathrooms.
Front Reception Desk
DBA Wall Panels: A tri-functioning acoustical panel that diffuses, blocks, and absorbs sound. The panels are class A fire retardant, washable, and paintable to match Soul Strings neutral aesthetic with pops of red and black.
All offices are efficiently insulated with 8” thick walls so no matter what is taking place within the venue, employees can concentrate on their work. Offices are located next to each other for convenience when meetings or collaboration among employees are needed.
A 1” thick plush Persian carpet has the same amount of acoustical fiber as a 6” thick sound panel. In addition powered by solar energy, making it an architecturally green, environmentally friendly acoustic product.

With a high percentage of around 78% americans who have stage freight, Soul Strings is here to help you on your journey to self expression by providing an interactive virtual experience within a confined space that lets you practice in front of a virtual auidence.
