September 2015 Team Orlando visits the new OCPS Tech Centers Launch Site By Dolly Rairigh Glass

Last month, Orange County Public Schools Tech Centers opened its doors to welcome the first students to the Launch Site, a new state-of-the-art facility at the Mid Florida Campus, featuring a specialized modeling and simulation program. The planning for the program, however, had been in the works for several years, and in order to ensure the facility would meet the future needs of the workforce, OCPS reached out to several companies and organizations to form a partnership, realizing that together, they could focus on how to best prepare their students.

For many years, Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) was getting great game submissions that revolved around Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The IPT believed these games would be applicable for high school education, yet none of the current feedback they were getting included the target users – the students.

Gen. Dennis Via, commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, recently spent the day visiting Army organizations in Orlando’s Central Florida Research Park. He kicked off his one-day visit at the Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation where he met with Maj. Gen. Jon Maddux and his leadership team before heading to the Army Research Laboratory’s Human Research and Engineering Directorate for a working lunch and demonstrations.

Army Research Laboratory and UCF sign cooperative agreement By Michelle Milliner, ARL Public Affairs

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory’s (ARL) Human Research and Engineering Directorate and the University of Central Florida (UCF) held a signing ceremony on Aug. 20 for a new cooperative agreement for the development of a Soldier Perception Laboratory at the Simulation and Training Technology Center in Orlando. The agreement has a ceiling cost of approximately $22 million over five years.

It’s been 50 years since the Naval Training Device Center (NTDC) — forerunner to today’s Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division — opened its first detachment in Orlando on Sept. 7, 1965.

Over the next three years, from 1965 to 1968, the command moved from the former Guggenheim Estate in Port Washington, New York, to the Naval Training Center, which opened at the site of the former Orlando Air Force Base in 1968. One current employee has been with the organization every step of the way.

Join NCS for Fall Membership Night The National Center for Simulation will host its Fall Membership Night on Wed., Sept. 30 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in room 233 of the UCF Partnership 3 building. Join other NCS members and invited guests for an evening of networking, as well as appetizers and beverages, and hear the latest updates on what NCS is doing in support of its members.

FLETC helps community improve training Submitted by FLETC PAO

This summer nearly 175 mall executives, mall security directors, and local law enforcement officers and leaders gathered to participate in the inaugural Private-Public Partnership Academy (PPPA) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia. FLETC collaborated with the National Protection and Preparedness Directorate (NPPD) and private sector stakeholders to plan this first-of-its-kind training event at FLETC. The PPPA brought together three distinct groups to participate in training pertinent to securing public venues, with a broader goal of improving coordination, security, and resiliency across traditional public and private sector areas of responsibility.
