This year’s Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) announced and recognized the 2016 winners at the Interservice/ Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), the world’s largest conference for modeling and simulation on Dec. 1. This year’s 20 finalists were showcased on the floor during the four-day I/ITSEC show, where close to 15,000 attendees had the opportunity to play a diverse cross-section of serious games developed by business, government and students in subject matters that ranged from medical professional training to rocket simulation to learning and managing debt.

Proposed aviation integrated system provides critical feedback By Rick Gregory, PEO STRI Strategic Communications Support Staff

Ever since the first aircraft was used in battle during the Italo-Turkish War in 1911, aerial superiority has played a decisive role in determining victory on the battlefield. Since then, realistic training for combined arms has become increasingly important to achieving that success from the air. However, unlike their battle buddies on the ground who, since the early 1970s, have been equipped with the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) for feedback as they staged mock battles, aviators have not had the technology available to relay to them or their commanders the cause and effect of their warfighting actions while involved in a combined arms training exercise.

Rob Matthews recognized by NTSA for Lifetime Achievement National Training and Simulation Association presented its annual modeling and simulation awards, as well as the Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement for modeling and simulation, at the NTSA M&S Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Orlando on Tuesday, Nov. 20. NTSA president RADM James Robb, USN (Ret) presented awards to a diverse group of teams and individuals from the US Air Force, US Navy, US Army and industry. One of those awardees, Team Orlando’s Rob Matthews, Deputy Technical Director for the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division, was recognized for a lifetime of achievement in M&S excellence. From his days as an enlisted sailor to his current role as a senior civilian leader, the imprint he has left on the MS&T landscape is as extensive as it is varied.

I/ITSEC: A great showcase for Central Florida STEM advocates Once again, the STEM Pavilion was jumping at this year’s Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC). Numerous booths, put together by the Central Florida STEM Council, Serious Game Showcase & Challenge, and the Future Leaders Pavilion, drew in thousands of visitors over the four days. A robotics camp for kids, an M&S camp for teachers, as well as more than 500 students and teachers from middle schools, high schools and ROTC units were engaged by presentations and hands-on demonstrations. This year, the Army Education Outreach Program (AEOP) also participated for the first time, as Mr. Louie Lopez, program manager for the AEOP, made his first visit to I/ITSEC and gave some remarks at the Serious Games Showcase & Challenge award ceremony.

NCS news: Election results and HOF deadline The National Center for Simulation held its fall election for four seats on its board of directors. Three of the four seats were filled with directors currently serving: Steve Painter, Hank Okraski and Terry Kohl; while one director, Dr. Lee Lacy, was newly elected. Lacy is no stranger to the NCS board; he has been involved with NCS since its early days and served for many years on the board of directors in a variety of roles, including chairman. Lacy said that he believes the board should be primarily populated by MS&T practitioners that understand the technology, industry, and needs of NCS members.
