Hello and welcome...
Our coverstar photoshoot!
… to your winter issue of Craft Club magazine! The festive time is perfect for crafters – we really get into our element as we whip up cards, gifts and décor fit for the season. This issue is packed with great yuletide crafts to inspire: Penelope Quinn brings holiday cheer to the table with lovely makes to set the scene for a Christmas dinner (p28), while Nancy Watt’s free festive papers and toppers are just what you need for a last-minute card-making session (p30). But there’s plenty more for you to make from Boxing Day onwards, with glitzy handmade New Year’s Eve decs for the home (p40) and a bullet journaling introduction so that you can organise your resolutions for the new year in style (p50). If you’d rather be transported to sunnier times, we’ve got you covered for that too with Sarah Jackman Read’s adorable pom-pom ice cream card (p18). Over on page 48, Eli Green creates bright floral cards with Dawn Bibby’s new collection, and your exclusive member’s gift will take you straight to the tropics with sparkly Crystal Art butterflies and birds from Craft Buddy (p22). Plus, don’t miss our interview with Stamps By Me founder Toni Darroch (p6)! We caught up with Toni about her amazing creative journey, which has seen her company become a household name in the crafting community plus be nominated for five Best of Crafts Awards. I hope you enjoy making the projects in this issue – we’ve certainly loved putting them together for you. I always enjoy seeing your makes, so please send in pictures of your creative projects to editor@createandcraft.com. Until then, wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year from me and everyone at Create and Craft!
We had such a great time when we met with stamping superstar Toni Darroch, chatting and photographing the day away! It’s no secret how much our community loves Toni’s products, so we were thrilled to invite her down to Create and Craft HQ to talk all things crafting. Read more about her amazing story on page 6.

“This is the HIGHLIGHT of my year!” TONI DARROCH IS PROUD AS PUNCH TO BE ON THE COVER OF YOUR WINTER MAGAZINE… BUT SHE HAS PLENTY MORE TO CELEBRATE!
T
oni Darroch burst onto our screens seven years ago, and it’s fair to say that she has cemented herself and Stamps By Me as one of your go-to brands. With her simple crafting philosophy, undisputed crafty talent and wonderfully warm personality, it’s not surprising that she has made it into the craftroom (and the hearts!) of our members. We thought you might like to find out a little more, so we booked a space in Toni’s busy diary and had a catch up.
A creative leap of faith I realised at a young age that handmade gifts make people happy. I was especially close to my grandmother who cherished every project that I made for her; the big smiles made the extra effort worthwhile. However, it wasn’t until my mum passed away that I took up crafting seriously, as a distraction. In 2011 I realised that I wanted to make a living out of crafting. I was working as a police officer and was making wedding invites and cards for a small, but growing, number of people, so I took a creative leap of faith… actually, my partner and I jumped in with both feet and invested in a shop, workshop and warehouse. Up to this point, we had often found ourselves saying things like: ‘I wish someone would produce a stamp for this’ or, ‘why doesn’t anyone think of a die for that’. This natural desire to improve my crafting journey has shaped the Stamps By Me vision, which is creative empowerment and inspiration through well-thought-out products, techniques and education.
06 CRAFT CLUB MAGAZINE
The C&C journey Create and Craft TV has been the go-to channel in my house for several years. I’ve always loved the presenters, the inspiration and the community. In 2011, I was literally bursting with ideas and product innovations, which I eventually took to TV in 2012 when I had my first show. I love how Create and Craft supports and shares my vision in my creative ideas and inspiration – in fact, C&C’s philosophy of Togetherness, Inspiration and
6-7 Interview.indd 6
Creativity is a guiding light in the crafting industry, and to be part of that as a small family business is very special. It’s also incredibly exciting being on live TV, but nerve racking! Thankfully, I haven’t had too many embarrassing on-screen moments, but on one show, I did call one of the presenters by the wrong name once. To get their own back they kept calling me Carol throughout the rest of the show! I won’t make that mistake again.
Connecting with people
I like to think the number of awards we’re up for is because our supporters feel the creative empowerment and
inspiration that drives our products, techniques and education. I also think there is something to be said about simply connecting with people on a very personal level. We all struggle to manage our time, commitments and a busy life, but when it comes to making time for others it couldn’t be more important. Our workshops are all about making time for people. The key strategy is simply to challenge one’s comfort zone, but to do so in a wonderfully comfortable and supportive environment. I am a massive watercolourist, and this is a classic example of an area of expertise that people are frightened of! It’s amazing how with a little nudge, lots of support and the right approach, the face that looks back at you is smiling with disbelief and appreciation – now that’s a workshop!

Good luck Toni!
We’re wishing Toni lots of luck in The Best of Crafts Awards 2019. She’s been nominated in five categories… not bad for someone who describes her company as ‘a slightly bumpy family outfit’!
But, while she finds it surprising, Toni’s no stranger to awards, as she explains: “I was enormously proud when we won the Viewers’ Choice award on Create and Craft last year. We are a family-run business with a dream to inspire; at no point did we actually think an army of supporters would raise us up on their shoulders in appreciation. I’m also unbelievably shocked that we’re up for a massive five awards in The Best of Craft Awards. Run by Crafts Beautiful and PaperCrafter magazines, they’re the craft industry’s most prestigious awards, so I’m really proud to even be nominated – I can’t quite believe it!”
The Best of Crafts Awards celebrate the crafty companies and faces that you love. The finalists are nominated and voted for by readers of Crafts Beautiful and PaperCrafter magazines - real crafters just like you! Find out how Toni got on when the winners are announced in the February issue of Crafts Beautiful magazine and the March issue of Papercrafter magazine.

One Knit 3Ways! HAVE A GO AT KNITTING A BEGINNER-FRIENDLY AND FULLY-CUSTOMISABLE BLANKET BY MANDY CAMERON
H
ow comfortable does this blanket look? Mandy Cameron from Creative World of Crafts has cleverly made it up by joining together simple knitted blocks, making it an easy and transportable project that you can pick up and put down whenever and wherever you please! Plus, since it uses super chunky yarn, the blocks will increase really quickly – why not whip up a few while watching your favourite Create and Craft shows? Once made up, the blanket works out to approximately the size of a single bed, but you can easily increase that measurement by adding more blocks or knitting bigger. There are three different methods to knit the blocks for you to choose from, all of which will create varied, interesting designs – switch up the yarn colours and patterns to create something unique to you. After all, there’s nothing better than snuggling in a soft, chunky blanket handmade with love.

WE CAUGHT UP WITH MANDY TO ASK HER FOR SOME KNITTING TOP TIPS “My biggest piece of advice when knitting is to always start with an adjustable slip knot on your first stitch, as you will be able to tighten the little hole you get at the beginning of the row and make it invisible. If you’re working with a tight tension, though, use larger needles for a smoother cast on and cast off, and to make it easier to sew blankets together. You can change to the correct size when starting the first row.

“Make sure to work using a garter stitch throughout. As a result, the finished project will have no right or wrong side, because both will look great. As well as that, you should always join yarn at the edge of the project and not in the middle of a row. This makes weaving in the ends much easier and invisible, giving a more professional finish to each project. If your edges are uneven, try slipping the first stitch of every row instead of knitting it.

Creative World of Crafts’ Knitty Critters collection has become something of a knitting and crochet sensation with its amazing kits featuring adorable critters and sweet baby garments. Each includes everything you need to complete the project, and are well-suited to both beginner and veteran knitters and crocheters with their comprehensive instructions. Visit knittycritters.co.uk for more information.
“When sewing your squares together, use the Bickford method, as this will be invisible on both sides of the blanket. To do this, lay two blocks down flat, edge to edge. You will notice that the knitted fabric consists of knots and loops – match each block knot to knot and loop to loop. Thread your sewing up yarn and proceed by bringing your needle down through a knot on the bottom-right and up through a knot on the bottom-left. Next, bring the needle down through a loop just above the knot on the left and bring it up through the loop of matching row on the right. Continue in this sequence, and pull the sewing up yarn to close the seam – even if you do this in a contrast colour, you can hardly see the join!”

dding a personal touch to a project is a simple way to create a thoughtful gift for a child in your family. Hand lettering is a fantastic place to start, as you can take a pen directly to your makes. However, you can also achieve an on-trend look by using a ScanNCut machine to cut vinyl words and embellishments. Unleash your creativity with the different methods used in these projects, and then wait to see the happy faces when your gifts are unwrapped!

Clean any dirt, dust or residue from the 1superhero shoes, and remove all tags and laces. Sketch comic book-inspired words on a scrap
of paper, such as POW, BIFF and ZAP, using capital letters and multiple exclamation marks. Doodle some comic book-inspired images to use alongside these words, such as explosions, speech bubbles and smoke clouds. Plan the colours of POSCA paint pens you will use on the different areas – a combination of primary colours and black works best. The sections that will be white do not need to be coloured, as the shoe underneath will show through. Using the sketches as a plan/template, colour one section at a time – the shoe seams will act as neat dividing lines. Use a small damp cotton bud to carefully clean up any mistakes while the paint is still wet. Dry each area gently using a heat gun to avoid smudging while you work. Once dry, add polka dots to the coloured backgrounds and outline shapes and words with a fine black pen. Repeat with the second shoe – each can have different wording, but keep the colours and styles similar so that the pair is cohesive.

On a piece of white paper, write your chosen name or names in large, joined up letters, using a brush pen to get a variation between the
thick and thin lines. Scan your writing on the ScanNCut’s scanning mat and save it. Insert a standard mat, and stick the vinyl down on top with the coloured side of the vinyl sheet facing upwards. Set the blade height to around 0.75 and the machine pressure to -2 and cut your word out of the vinyl. These settings should cut through the vinyl but not the clear backing sheet. Remove the sheet from the ScanNCut and use a pokey tool to remove the excess pieces of vinyl. Press a sheet of clear, sticky transfer paper down over the front of the vinyl word and burnish with a bone folder or scraper to adhere. Transfer onto the pencil case and press down well to ensure that all edges are stuck down.

Open the fabric up to reveal neat, rounded corners. Round the bottom corners of the pocket fabric in the same way as the apron, using a 7” plate.
Position the pocket on the centre of the apron fabric, right side up, and pin in place. Stitch around the sides and the bottom to secure.
020-021 KitchenCrafts.indd 20
Fold the sides and curved bottom of the pocket fabric over by 0.5” and press. Add 2” tape to the top by opening up one side of the binding tape and aligning the right sides of your fabric with the raw edge of your tape. Pin in place.
Add 2” binding tape to the edge of the apron using the same method as the pocket. Once done, lay your apron face up, and find the centre of it and the centre of the 3” binding tape.
2
Fold the blue fabric in half and place the 10” plate on top. Trace a rounded corner around one of the open edges with an air erasable marker and cut.
5
Stitch along the binding tape 0.5” from the edge. Flip it over to the back, re-pin flat and sew with a straight stitch all the way along – this will hide the raw edge and give a neat finish.
8
Place the apron inside the flap of the binding tape, lining up the centre points, and pin in place. Sew along all of the open sides of the binding tape to secure it, including the parts hanging over the ends of the apron.

How to use your Crystal Art motifs
Push the nib of the pick up tool into the pink wax and push the wax into the nib using your finger. Each pack of crystals is labelled with a number or letter, which corresponds to a circle on the motif. Select one to start with, and dispense some of the crystals into a tray. Shake gently so that the crystals form a line and turn the right way up. Peel off the plastic covering the part of the motif you are working on. Pick up a gem using your tool, and place it flat side down
3
onto the corresponding numbered/lettered circle. Continue this process until all of the circles have been filled. Before attaching the motif to your project, seal the design using the Crystal Art Sealer. This ensures that the crystals will not drop off if your project is going to be handled frequently. Use a paintbrush to apply a thin layer at the base of the crystals, wiping off the excess. Once dry, the motif is ready to peel away from the backing. Use a small amount of glue on the reverse of the motif to attach to your project.

6Essentials Baby Shower
THROW AN ELEGANT PARTY THE EASY WAY!
E
very expectant mum deserves to be spoilt by all of her loved ones, and a baby shower is the perfect way to celebrate the imminent arrival of a bundle of joy. As with all successful celebrations, detail is crucial, and nowhere is this more important than with the decorations; it only takes a few to transform your venue into the perfect baby shower set-up, and a handcrafted effect brings a personal touch.

24 CRAFT CLUB MAGAZINE
The Oh Baby collection from Ginger Ray is now available to buy at Create and Craft! Plus we have loads of their other ranges too... from weddings to milestone birthdays – we’ve got you covered! Mix and match to create a bespoke party theme and craft unique items to boot.
1 Balloons
What’s a party without balloons? They’re a décor staple no matter what occasion is being celebrated. To add a little wowfactor, these clear balloons are filled with a colourful confetti – pastel shades of pink or blue could reveal the baby’s gender!
024-025 Ginger Ray.indd 24
2 Bunting
Bunting is a party classic and we love the calligraphy one in this range; it provides a real focal point and sets the theme perfectly. Plus, as it comes in gold, it’s not only luxe looking but it’s ideal for a genderneutral shower.
3Tableware
Making sure that you have enough food is a big priority at any party, and with some extra finishing touches you can ensure all the dishes look as good as they taste. Keep the theme of the party running with napkins, tableware and cutlery.
21/11/2019 16:52
4Sash
It may be called a baby shower, but this party is all about making the mummyto-be feel special. With a designated sash, it’ll be clear to everyone that this day is all about her, and coordinating the accessory with the rest of the décor will really tie the whole event together.
With all of this effort going into treating the mother, let’s not forget there’s another little person to celebrate, too! Creating a guestbook using blocks is the perfect way to preserve the memories and well wishes of everyone who attended the party, and it can be treasured until the baby is old enough to read them.
6Advice cards
It can be daunting being a first-time mother, so a baby shower is a great opportunity for experienced parents to share their top tips and words of wisdom. Use this as a feature at the party by setting up an advice station, with cute babygrow shaped cards pegged to twine ready for the guests to fill in.

his lovely piece uses five different bead colours and an impressive layering technique to create an ombré effect. Move through two of the 3yourself new beads added, to position at the end of the row.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 to gain length. The piece will look like it’s made up of rows of a single bead, two beads on top of each other, then a single bead again. Continue until you have 11 single ‘centre’ beads along your row.
Cut approximately 1m of thread 1needle and add your needle. Move the to the halfway point to limit
the length you have to work with. Pick up four of your lightest beads and bring them to the end of your thread, leaving a 10cm tail. Bring your needle back through two beads and pull tight. This will form a ‘square’ with the beads – every step in the frame of your necklace is made using this square shape, which will grow the length and stems for the swags of beads.
Once you reach your 11th centre 4 bead, move to the base bead of your final cluster. Repeat the same
technique to achieve ‘drop’ lengths. These will support the swags later in the project.

TOP TIPS
l Decide on the range of colours
you wish to work with and graduate from light to dark. I find it useful to spill a small amount of each on my bead mat in order, ready for threading on.
l Move through only one bead at
a time when creating your base weaves. If you move through two at a time it can pull the beads out of a neat line. l Attach your clasps with jump rings so that you don’t need to re-weave your necklace if you ever need to replace the clasp. l If you do not wish to continue the swag detail all the way around your necklace, you can create a longer plain chain length to clasp.
Pick up 31 beads in colour 5 11 and bridge in between to the other drop length. Repeat as before,
moving upwards, now creating a backwards C. Position yourself on the cluster above, coming out of the far left bead for your new swag. Repeat the process, picking up one less bead on each swag each time to get a neat graduation in the tiers. The colour of the bead you are exiting from is the colour you will use for your swag. There should be 3 rows for each colour.

Add the clasp in place of the second bead in a cluster to sit it neatly at the end of your row. Secure your threads by weaving back into your work and tying off with half hitch knots.

Cut out the dove, leaving the mark uncut, and hold the bird up to your glass. Double check that it’s weighted evenly on each side. Cut the slit and position the dove on the glass to check it sits correctly. You may need to cut deeper into the dove if you find that it’s toppling over. TOP TIPS
Why not try drying slices of orange in the oven and then sticking them to the cinnamon stick candles? It’s a classic combination!
l A shower curtain ring is the perfect size for a napkin holder, but use your imagination and see what other household bits and bobs you can use! l If you are using long cinnamon sticks to make a bigger candle holder, you may need to tie two pieces of wire at either end to keep it held together. l Lit candles should never be left unsupervised; if you’re worried about safety, you could create a similar decoration by adhering cinnamon sticks to a glass jar and using a battery-operated LED candle.

l Try scoring an easel card diagonally across the front rather than horizontally to create a twisted easel. It’s a novel ‘twist’ on the classic design. l When cutting out any shape freehand, like the poinsettia flowers, a craft knife is quicker and more dexterous than a pair of scissors – just be careful with the sharp blade and don’t cut on a slippery surface. l Use a ball tool to gently curve your petals for extra texture and detail in your decorative elements. l Cut the large poinsettia a few times and trim away layers of petals and leaves to create your own decoupage layers for even more detailed depth.

Lay an A4 sheet of card on a scoreboard landscape-oriented and trim 6cm from the bottom so that it measures 15cm. Score vertical lines 6cm, 8cm and 10cm from either side. On both sides, fold the second scoreline inwards and the first and third scorelines in the opposite direction to create a concertina fold. With the card folded on just the second score lines, cut out a row of small triangles

along each folded side, with the tops of the triangles reaching the first scoreline. Leave a small space between each triangle. Once done, open up your card and you will have a line of diamonds on each side. Roll the card into a cylinder to create the cracker shape and secure with glue. Decorate the cracker with your choice of embellishments – the crackers pictured use textured card stars embellished with mini pom-poms, a die-cut Noel, and a cutout sentiment. Wrap a length of ribbon around one neck of the cracker and tie into a bow. Fill the cracker with a gift, then wrap and tie a bow around the other neck of the cracker.

TOP TIPS X For gifts, why not fill the
crackers with lottery tickets, personalised notes or handmade party hats? X Add a bang to your crackers by including a cracker snap. X If you write your guests’ names on the crackers, they double up as place cards that show everyone where they’re sitting at the Christmas table. Repeat the whole process for the 11 other roses. Cut out lots of elongated ovals from green crepe paper. Stick one to a length of floral wire by pinching one edge around it. Add around four
more leaves to the length of the wire in this manner. Repeat to create several of these for foliage. Take a sheet of toilet paper and fold it in half three times, then cut the strip into five even pieces. Open up the small strips and use tiny amounts of hot glue to stick them to small lengths of thin wire. Tape the bottom and the rest of the wire with floral tape. Create small bunches fastening together with floral wire, and secure with floral tape. Repeat so that you have several stems [4]. Start adding the elements together, figuring out the positioning you like best. Once everything is in place, tape the stems together with floral tape. Party Decs WELCOME THE NEW YEAR IN STYLE WITH THESE FABULOUS MAKES FROM LOU COLLINS
N
ew Year’s Eve is a time when a party can be decorated in the most extravagant and luxurious way! Everyone makes an extra effort for the occasion, and these New Year decorations are no exception – they will transform any room. The colours used are classic, but if your party is themed differently, or you’d like them to match your own home’s décor, simply switch the colours for something more suitable. What’s more, with very little effort, these makes can be reused year after year.

Write your message out with a pencil onto a piece of smooth white A4 paper. When you are happy with the spacing, trace over the text with a black brush pen. Press harder for the down strokes to make them thicker, and use very light pressure for the other thinner strokes. Once you have traced over all the words, add shadows to the right edge of the thicker lines with a grey brush pen. Trace over the ampersand with an embossing pen. Quickly sprinkle gold embossing powder over the wet ink and heat to melt and set the powder. Repeat this heat embossing process with smaller stars around your lettering, using a Quickie glue pen rather than the large embossing pen. Trim the edges of the white paper by approximately 5mm and matt onto a sheet of black A4 card for stability.

In gold, silver, black and white, trim some strips from 12” square card with widths varying from 1” up to 6”. Anything wider than 2” will require two strips of the same width glued together at the ends to make a length of around 24”.
040-041 Party Time.indd 40
Using a scoreboard, concertina fold each strip widthways at intervals of around 1cm. Once all your rosette pieces are folded, glue the two shorter ends together to form a cylinder. Take the top edge of this cylinder and push it outwards so that your bottom edge falls inwards, flattening out to create the rosette shape. Hot glue a small square of card in the centre to secure. Once all your rosettes are built, lay them out overlapping each other until you are happy with the overall shape. Use hot glue where they overlap to adhere them together and add strips of card on the reverse for stability. Die cut various sized stars and stick these over the rosette centres to hide the glue. Dot a few self-adhesive gems across the rosettes for extra sparkle, and attach a ribbon to the back for hanging.

Leave this thin coat to dry and repeat until the bottles are solid black. Die cut four large white stars. With a ScanNCut, cut out the numbers 2020 from gold card, each around 4” tall. Adhere the numbers on top of the stars. Attach the stars to the front of the bottles. Take two wrapping streamers, both around 24” in length, and fold them both in half. Tie the folded streamers together, leaving you with four lengths of streamer coming from a secure knot. With the edge of some scissors, curl each streamer. rip cakes can be difficult to decorate; if the topping is the incorrect consistency, the drips will completely spill over the sides or just not run at all. However, Cassie has a secret to impart to you! “I use a drip cutter to create the perfect shape every time – it’s a lifesaver! Then, I accentuate the cake further with lovely arum lilies, which are easy to create because each flower is formed using only one petal.”

Roll it out, thinner than the drips you cut previously, and add a little cornflower to the top and underside of the paste. Using the impression mat that comes with the cutters, press down on the paste to make some vein impressions. Use the largest arum lily cutter in the set to cut petal shapes from the veined paste. Place a cut-out petal onto the foam pad. With the ball tool positioned half on the paste and half on the pad, gently press down and roll around to make the cutout a little thinner at the edges. Repeat with the other petals. Brush some water along the bottom edge of the cutout, place a flower centre onto it, and wrap the petal around it. Press and smooth the paste at the bottom of the lily. Using your fingers, gently curl the top of the petal over, for a more natural look. Wrap the visible wire with green florist tape. Create several lilies in the same way.

pins come with two sets of rubber bands – these will help you roll the paste to the same thickness every time. Using the purple bands creates a thicker paste, so for the icing drips, take off the pink bands and push the purple bands to the end of the rolling pin for use. X If you accidentally put too much food colouring into your paste and it becomes too dark, simply add a little of the coloured paste to a larger amount of white paste – this will make it paler. X Dried semolina makes the most authentic looking faux pollen, but you can also use food dust to create a variety of colours. X Adding tylose powder to the sugar paste will make it much stronger and dry harder, helping it to support the weight of the lilies.

Vibrant Floral ELI GREEN COMBINES DAWN BIBBY’S NEW COLLECTION WITH ADVANCED PAPERCRAFTING TECHNIQUES TO CREATE PRETTY GREETINGS

E
li has used the new Dawn Bibby Creations’ Winter Floral Collection and incorporated heat embossing and simple stamping techniques to create three card styles. “I was thrilled when Dawn asked me to be part of her design team,” says Eli, “I jumped at the chance to work with someone that I have admired for so long. Working with Dawn and her team is so inspiring and I love the opportunity I get to share my work with others.”
Dream Skill Level
You Will Need...
• Sheena Douglass Stamping Card, two 6.5” squares • Tim Holtz distress oxide ink pads: Mustard Seed, Twisted Citron, Cracked Pistachio, Mowed Lawn • Dawn Bibby Creations: Winter Floral Collection; Quick Stick glue • VersaFine ink pads: Onyx Black, VersaMark • Card: pink, magenta • Card blank, white, 8” square • MDF sentiment, Dream • Heat gun • WOW! embossing powder, white • Embossing ball tool • Craft Buddy gems
Use a smooching technique to create a 1 background on one of the stamping cards. To do this, press each of the distress oxide ink
pads onwto your crafting mat in turn. Spray water over the ink, then push the white card into the wet ink, lift and repeat. Dry the card and repeat the process until you are happy with the colour. Centre the foliage heart die on the blank stamping card and cut. Line up the negative die-cut card with the inked card and glue together with Quick Stick so that the green and yellow ink shows through. Use this negative die cut as a guideline to stamp the foliage heart onto the background with the black VersaFine ink pad. Choose three small stamps from the collection, and using the distress oxide inks, stamp a border around the edge of the white card with second and third generation ink by first pressing the stamp onto a piece of scrap paper. Layer this onto a 6.9” square of pink card and then onto a 7.2” square of magenta card. Matt onto the 8” square white card blank. Press the Dream sentiment onto the VersaMark ink pad, sprinkle with white embossing powder, and then heat emboss using a heat gun. Repeat the process to give a highly enamelled look. Glue to the centre of the card. Die cut a few small flowers from the Winter Floral Collection and shape each petal with your ball tool before assembling. Glue as shown. Add gems to the centre of each flower to finish.

Learn Bullet Journaling CARLA BAGSHAW GETS CREATIVE AS WE TEAM UP WITH LEUCHTTURM TO BRING YOU THEIR FANTASTIC RANGE
W
hen life seems to dash by in a flurry of to-do lists and phone pings, it’s no surprise that many of us are searching for ways to slow down. Enter the bullet journal system, an exciting way to organise weekly priorities and track creative projects. Created by New York-based digital product designer and author Ryder Carroll in 2013, bullet journaling has gained legions of loyal fans keen to organise their lives, declutter their minds and create something beautiful in the process.
Carla says...
“I love journaling. I love the freedom of expression it allows and the personal journey it can take you on. Each one is different, from very organised planners with plain, minimal designs to colourful art journals. Now, there is also the bullet journal. “The new Leuchtturm journal is aimed at the latter. I’ve always loved Leuchtturm notebooks, and this journal is no exception. It has wonderful quality dotted paper, which makes designing pages easier, with a neater and more aesthetically pleasing end result. It is also a wonderful launchpad for beginners as it provides the user with a few pre-designed pages, like the index, and it offers tips and tricks about how to journal. “But do you have to follow it? No! Absolutely not. A journal is not meant for wider audiences; it is yours and yours alone, so you can fill it in however you please. Bullet journals do normally comprise certain basic pages, such as the key, index and daily, weekly and monthly spreads, but it’s up to you how and whether they’re included.”

Unleash your Creativity
“When it comes to designs, you can freestyle like I have, or use stamps if you prefer a perfect look. Try filling your illustrations with paint, ink, pencil or scraps of paper, and use washi tape to create gorgeous borders for your pages. “Personally, I like to use my bullet journal to practise other skills. I often paint small watercolour circlescapes – they don’t need to be perfect, but as I work through the year I love to see the clear demonstration of how I’m improving. “Remember: there are no rules. You can have September next to June if you wish, just fill out your index page so you can quickly see where everything is. You can create a spread of books you’ve read or travel notes, mood trackers or health and exercise trackers. And, if you are terribly forgetful like me, you can even use the journal to track birthdays! Your journal is like a dream paper home for your mind. Best of all, it is designed so you can do what works for you – that’s the beauty of the bullet journal.”

As bullet journals continue to take the crafting community by storm, we’re pleased to announce a partnership with notebook maker Leuchtturm.
Leuchtturm has been a part of the bullet journaling craze from the very beginning, thanks to its range of colours, fantastic quality paper, numbered pages and contents page –
that’s why we’re so excited to have teamed up with the company. Ryder Carroll originally partnered with Leuchtturm to create a special, limited-edition bullet journal, which sold out within hours of being launched. The system is still so popular today that online searches for bullet journaling have risen 675% since 2014, and there are now
more than one million monthly searches for it on Google. Luckily, it is easier than ever to get your hands on a purpose-made bullet journal, and we’re delighted to bring the revolutionary product to our club members. For more information head to createandcraft.com/gb/brands/ leuchtturm1917

Mark on the templates where you want to place your eyes, and where you plan to attach the legs to the body. Tracing around the templates, draw and cut out the required pieces from the fabric (see opposite page). Transfer your eye and leg marks onto the fabric, as well as the small marks that were already on the Head’s trunk and Body’s bottom. Cut out two Ears from the fusible foam stabiliser, not including the 1cm seam allowance. Iron one to a fabric ear’s wrong side [1]. Repeat with the other body/head piece, sewing along the other edge of the belly piece. Cut into the seam allowances at 1cm intervals to allow the seams to flex when turned the other way out [4]. Pin the top edge of the body/head pieces together along the seam line, and begin sewing at the exact point that the belly stitching ends on the bottom. Stitch 5cm up then reverse stitch for a few stitches to secure. Cut the threads and move 10cm along the stitch line, leaving an open gap. Start sewing again and finish at the point on the trunk where the belly stitching starts. Cut into the seam allowance at 1cm intervals to allow for flexing. Turn the elephant body right side out – the points on the trunk and bottom where the three fabrics meet should sit flat. Matt the 15cm dark green square, 14cm light green square and 13cm white square to the inside of the card using foam tape, and affix the sentiment matt to the bottom-right, to function as the easel stopper. Add detail to the Carnation Shoe die cuts using foiling adhesive and gold foil, and a few pearl and crystal embellishments. Mount them onto the card front using glue gel.

Score lines on the pizza platform, as shown on the template. Cut two of each of the three large circle templates to create the pizzas, cutting the largest from beige card for the crust, the middle size from red card for the tomato sauce and the small from orange card for the cheese. Use a craft knife to cut five slits into one of each size circle as shown on the templates. Cut 14 of the 1cm circle template from red card for the pepperoni and eight from black card for the olives. Use a hole punch to remove the centre from the olives. From green card, cut slivers for peppers and leaf shapes for basil. Using the template, cut out the candles from white card. Cover each candle with a different colour of card and add a yellow flame. Score as shown on the template. Create the inside pizza by layering the three circles with slits, ensuring that the slits are aligned. Slide the candles through to their score lines and attach the pizza to the platform so the candle base sticks through the hole. Fold the platform along the score lines and attach the top fold in between the two score lines at the middle of the card blank. Attach the front of the candle base to the card blank so the candles will slide through the slits when the card is opened. Anne’s a big fan 64 CRAFT CLUB MAGAZINE
After receiving the last issue of Craft Club Magazine, I thought I’d have a go at the Old Shale stitch pattern, and now I’m totally smitten! I’ve knitted a blanket with it for my five-year-old granddaughter who I used to sing to sleep with I Can Sing a Rainbow.
Star Letter
Crafting helped me during a dark time in my life. In 2004, I took an early retirement due to depression and spent much of my time indoors. However, while flicking through the TV channels, I discovered Dawn Bibby and was intrigued. I started trying crafts and even left the house for the first time in a while to buy crafty bits. Then, in 2007, I discovered Create and Craft and it changed my life! Despite the fact that I currently live in a small rural village in Spain with the closest craft shop 60 miles away, I craft regularly and I’m addicted to the demonstrations and the products. My mind is in a much better place – even if I have a ‘down’ day, I just tune in to the channel for the crafting demos and uplifting chatter, or closet myself into my craft room and get creative!
About 10 years ago, my husband bought me a Create and Craft membership and I haven’t looked back since! The first thing I do in the mornings while I have my breakfast is to turn on the TV and watch Create and Craft. My favourite crafting product is the versatile Cut’N’Boss machine – I make cards for charity and this machine is a little workhorse! Combined with Tattered Lace dies, it’s heaven.

Emma’s trying new techniques
I adore mandala designs, so I had a go at designing a different shape in the same style. First, I put together the seahorse on Photoshop and printed it out, then I very carefully cut out the design using a scalpel blade and a CutterPillar Glow Light Tablet. I really love how it turned out and I’m so glad I tried something new – the blue background makes the white seahorse pop brilliantly!

I sat in my comfy chair and thought my life is going nowhere, I was 70 now and things had slowed down, So, I didn’t do anything but sit in my nightgown. Work had ceased, retirement is here, While all the people around me seemed to cheer, I was more than bored with nothing to do, My fingers stuck to the TV remote like glue. “You’ve got no hobbies, no wonder you’re bored!” Said my daughters, sounding like a broken record. They tried to tempt me to take up crafts, To take my mind off things, “Come to my house this weekend, we’re going to try macramé.” Reluctantly I went and tried different crafts, As well as my nemesis, the crochet hook, But back at home, I found Create and Craft, It was better than any book. I started to buy things, things I could do, So many different crafts to choose, And now three years on, a large wooden cabin I have got, To fill with crafty things; when I’m lost, you’ll find me here, I’m happier now than I could ever dream, And l owe it all to the Create and Craft team.
“I’m so pleased with my prizes” I was lucky enough to win £500 during the August Bank Holiday event and I’m writing to thank everyone at Create and Craft for all the goodies I received. I’m so pleased with them! The Gemini machine is super useful as you can keep passing the plates through without any need for a turning crank – it’s very handy right now, as I’m making lots of boxes. I’ve also bought the Tonic Studios Luxury Storage Handbag and Roller Set, We R Memory Keepers Foil Quill Set and plenty of little dies from Tonic Studios, which are absolutely lovely.

All you wonderful people who use your talents to help out those in need pour so much love into your projects and we thought it was about time to tell just a few of the stories that we have been sent recently.
“If I can help even a little, I will” I make and donate cards to various charity fundraisers, including those for MS Society, Macmillan Cancer Support and Maggie’s Centres. I’ve lost family and friends to cancer in the past, and suffer from MS myself, so I’m keen to repay the charities that help those in need – if I can help them even a little, I will. Hazel was inspired to help! With the help of my sister who lives in the UK and the fantastic range of items at Create and Craft, I craft 40 to 50 cards per month to help raise money for an inspiring cancer care charity in Spain called Cudeca. It now has a hospice where patients and their loved ones can be together, and I am really proud to be able to play a small part in their fundraising.

Julieanne’s passionate about owls! I’ve always crafted in some form and about 20 years ago I discovered card-making while on a holiday in the USA – I had to buy another suitcase just to bring home my newfound stash! It’s a lot easier just ordering it from Create and Craft. Nowadays, I make cards for a lovely charity called the International Owl Society (IOS), which raises funds for the conservation of owls overseas. I love crafting for the IOS because with every card that I make for their fundraising, I feel that I have helped in a small way. Recently, I’ve fallen in love with The Paper Boutique’s toppers and papers, so I’ll be making lots of cards for the IOS with them! As well as my crafting, I work at Owls R Us, and my co-workers and

TOP TIPS
l Try using your die with very low pressure in your cutting machine to lightly emboss the design into card and add an intriguing texture and pattern to your projects. l Printing the Charisma download is a quick and effortless way to achieve the perfect colour in your die cuts, but you can also use inks, watercolours, acrylic paints or embossing mediums to transform plain white die cuts in your own way.
