Editors Note Fall — best of all? You could probably make that argument with any season on the Central Coast. But in the fall, you get perfect 70-something daytime temperatures, with the benefit of “sweater weather” in the evenings. Maybe we don’t get all the autumnal glory of the East Coast, but we’ll happily take our golden vineyards and chef’s-kiss sunsets at the beaches, thanks. We’ve compiled some of our favorite things to do, see, taste, and experience this harvest season. Fair warning: you’re going to want to clear your schedule. Get ready to taste! Harvest time on the Central Coast means wine festivals (PAGE 32). We profile three festivals (plus a bonus event for your winter calendar) that are sure to help you find your new favorite vino, and a heck of a good time, too. CA 101
Experience your own endless summer in the little town of Summerland (PAGE 82). Perched on the edge of the Pacific, its views are incredible. But what makes it a truly special place is its small-town vibe, where a diverse array of mom-and-pop businesses support one another — and welcome you to do the same. If you’ve done “The Castle” (Hearst Castle, that is) but still aren’t ready to head back home, head toward the beach. The Hearst Ranch Winery is just steps from the water, providing epic views in addition to some seriously yummy wines (PAGE 120). When you’re done tasting, take a walk along the stunning beach trail.
Chef Randy channels Coco and honors Mexican heritage with his Día de los Muertos feast (PAGE 50). Impress your amigos y familia with some pozole, chili rellenos, and more (mezcal margarita, anyone?). No matter where you are across the country and beyond, chances are you can find a little Central Coast goodness with Santa Barbara Smokehouse salmon (PAGE 66). As its name suggests, it’s smoked right here in Santa Barbara, with ethicallysourced products. We’ll take you behind the scenes with this local legend. Get ready for the ultimate relaxation at Sycamore Minerals Springs Resort & Spa (PAGE 95). This Avila gem sources natural mineral springs to feed hot tubs at this gorgeous property. Paso is known for pouring some fabulous wines, but it’s also serving up something totally different: Sensorio (PAGE 110). This mind-bendingly beautiful exhibit spans 15 acres of rolling hillsides blanketed in solar-powered lights that gently change color. For a different kind of light, head to the harbors (PAGE 12). Both the Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura Harbor are hosting their own Parade of Lights, with dozens of boats decked out in dazzling lights — and often music and other visual/ audio delights, as well. Go early for dinner, shopping, and festivities. What are your favorite fall activities? Let us know!

Harbor Holidays Parade of Lights celebrate the season By Nicole Leonetti Photos courtesy Channel Islands Harbor
Boaters go all out each year — and with improvements in technology, the parade keeps getting better.
I love a parade — especially when boats are involved! I’m in heaven during the holiday season when both the Channel Islands and Ventura Harbors have their annual Parade of Lights events. These parades have become holiday traditions, bringing joy to these communities and to all who join them each holiday season. This year’s fun begins during Halloween (Parade of Frights) then kicks into high gear in December, with back-to-back weekends full of fun and light at these two Ventura County harbors.
Channel Islands Harbor First up on Dec. 9 is the 57th annual Parade of Lights at Channel Islands Harbor. Thousands of visitors will line the harbor to watch more than 55 boats, ranging from small electric boats to large yachts, parade through the harbor decked out in electric holiday finery. This year’s theme? Santa’s Workshop! The parade runs from 7 to 10 pm, but the fun starts at Harbor View Park at noon with complimentary photos with Santa, 36 tons of snow, a bounce house for the kids, live music, food trucks, vendors, and a Food & Toy Drive. There are plenty of options for prime viewing areas for the parade. Many folks start scoping out their spots around 4 or 5 pm. If you’d rather be away from the main crowd, make your way to Marine Emporium Landing, which is located toward the end of the parade route. Another great viewing option is to buy tickets aboard the Scarlett Belle, a beautiful paddlewheel riverboat that makes for excellent viewing. These go fast, however, so book early! 12

Folks bundle up for a cozy viewing experience at the Channel Islands. california101guide.com
Bedazzled dancers add extra pizzaz to this entry in the Channel Islands Harbor Parade of Lights.
Alternatively, you can make dinner reservations at one of the harbor’s many restaurants. The Waterside Restaurant & Wine Bar and Moqueca Brazilian Restaurant are two great options. There are also plenty of casual spots. Just be warned that Toppers Pizza Place will be packed during holiday events, so plan accordingly if you are craving pizza. The parade gets better each year, with increasingly elaborate decorations. Harbor Department Public Information Officer, Jed Chernabaeff, recalls past boat entries that had everything from a live band on board to a halfpipe with skateboarders! Another memorable year had a “Heroes on Holiday” theme, where the winning boat carried military veterans through the parade route. You can enter your own boat in the parade at channelislandsharbor.org. But come ready for fierce competition from other boat owners who vie for the grand prize — the engraved Sweepstakes Trophy — which is awarded to the boat with the highest score for originality as well as visual and sound effects. The winner keeps the trophy for the next year, allowing for numerous victory laps around the harbor. Can’t wait until December? The Channel Islands Harbor will host its second annual Parade of Frights on Oct. 28. This Halloween-themed, non-competitive boat parade is scheduled for 7 pm, with family-friendly events including a scavenger hunt, live music, a DJ, and a costume contest kicking off the evening. There will be trick-or-treating and other Halloween themed events at the local restaurants. There is even talk of a haunted house experience this year! Check the website above for details. california101guide.com

13
Ventura Harbor Ventura Harbor keeps the festivities going with its own Parade of Lights on Dec. 15 and 16. Expect a colorful, tropical vibe with this year’s theme, Hula Holiday. The Ventura tradition started more than 45 years ago and has grown from one festive night to two in recent years. Thousands of people attend the parade, which starts at 6:30 pm — but we suggest getting there much earlier to take in all the sights (and to get good parking!). Like the Channel Islands Harbor parade, admission is free. The parade itself runs from 6:30 to 8 pm, with the boats completing two loops around the harbor. A spectacular fireworks show will follow the parade each night. Jennifer Talt-Lundin, marketing manager for Ventura Harbor and Ventura Harbor Village, suggests that visitors “Dress in layers and bring a festive holiday spirit!” The festivities kick off early in the day with carnival rides, games, faux snow, snacks, hot chocolate, and loads of photo ops. Don’t forget to take advantage of holiday shopping and seaside dining at Ventura Harbor Village, which boasts 32 shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, and bakeries. For dinner, you’ve got lots of

choices. No matter what you’re feeling, you’ll find it at the Ventura Harbor! Make reservations early at places such as Brophy Bros. Clam Bar & Restaurant, Copa Cubana, or The Greek Mediterranean Steak & Seafood. If you’d rather be a participant instead of a spectator, reach out to marketing@venturaharbor.com to hold your spot. Boater applications can be found on venturaharborvillage.com starting in November. Bring your sailboat, powerboat, electric boat, or humanpowered boat — all are welcome! Don’t have a boat, but still want to participate? Island Packers has a Parade of Lights Holiday Cruise. You can also charter a boat through Ventura Boat Rentals, which offers several vessels; for example, lighted character boats including a dragon, duck, swan, or flamingo in various colors. Parade entry is free and includes perks like cash prizes, gift certificates, a complimentary professional photo of your boat in the parade, special gifts, and a Boater Mixer. There are multiple prize categories including a Peoples’ Choice Awards and Showstoppers, and of course, bragging rights for the next 12 months. And yes — some boats enter both the Channel Islands Harbor Parade and the Ventura Harbor Parade! california101guide.com

Join the Santa Paddle Dec. 9 from 11 am to noon in the Ventura Harbor Village.
But fair warning: boat owners prepare months in advance, so bring your A game! Lundin loves seeing the decor evolve from year to year as technology improves and allows boaters’ creativity to shine in new ways. In the past, Lundin has seen everything from slides on boats, to large screens projecting movies that align with the year’s theme. Come a week early for the Winter Wonderland and Holiday Marketplace, which will take place Dec. 9 at Ventura Harbor Village. From 11 am to noon, participants are welcome to join the Santa Paddle, where folks in festive attire paddle their
human-powered boats through the harbor. (And yes, you can rent from Ventura Boat Rentals!) Then, from noon to 3 pm, find carolers, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, live reindeer, musicians, and plenty of activities for kids. Only 7 miles separate these two harbors — meaning you can enjoy the holiday season without traveling far from these beautiful oceanside destinations. SEAsons Greetings! For more information, visit channelislandsharbor.org and venturaharborvillage.com.

Hello, Harvest!
By Don Sonderling
Find your new favorite sips at these Central Coast wine festivals The Central Coast isn’t necessarily known for its fall colors — but head to wine country, and you’ll find it in spades. From Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, vineyards transform the rolling hills from deep green to vibrant golds, reds, and yellows.
Folks in the region are celebrating the colors — and, more importantly, the harvest! — with several fall wine festivals. What better way to taste these AVAs?

Fall 2023
Kick off the season with the 39th annual Santa Barbara’s Vintners Festival Weekend. This is one you won’t want to miss! The main event is slated for Oct. 14, with more than 60 of the area’s premier wineries pouring their liquid art at Vega Vineyard and Farm in Buellton. Some of the wineries include Coquelicot Organic Estate Wines, Gainey Vineyard, Ken Brown Wines, Margerum Wine Company, and Alma Rosa Winery.

Try more than two dozen wines (and a variety of small bites) at the SB Vintners Festival, then take advantage of Vega Vineyards’ gorgeous grounds.
Celebrate good times with bubbles in the Bank of Marin Bubble Lounge. They’ll be serving up sparkling wines from wineries such as Carhartt Family Wines, Presqu’ile Winery, Riverbench Vineyard & Winery, and others. Bubbles signify celebration — and the season calls for celebration!
More than two dozen food purveyors will also be on-site. Many of Santa Barbara’s most renowned food artisans will be serving up their creative specialties. Enjoy a variety of flavors and tasty treats to complement the wines you’re tasting. Live music will be provided by The Coals. Described by KPCC Radio as “Inventive, catchy, genuine, and moving,” they’re sure to get your toes tapping. So, plan the day to meet the wines, winemakers, winery owners, chefs, restauranteurs, and likeminded people who love the wine life. For a list of the wineries and restaurants, tickets and more, visit sbvintnersweekend.com. Harvest on the Coast November 4 The San Luis Obispo Coast AVA, stretching from the Santa Maria Valley to San Simeon, is an exciting area to explore for wine. This cooler coastal region produces more than 20 varietals, including elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as Riesling, Pinot Head toward the SLO coast for Harvest on the Coast, set for Nov. 4. Gris, Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer, and Viognier, plus cool climate reds such as Grenache and Syrah. And don’t forget the bubbles!

The picturesque Chamisal Vineyards — which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year — will play host to this year’s Harvest on the Coast festival.

Come taste and explore the wonders of this area at Harvest on the Coast. This year’s event will take place at Chamisal Vineyards in the beautiful Edna Valley. As described by Travel & Leisure Magazine, Chamisal is “the stuff California dreams are made of: incomparably beautiful surroundings, temperate climates, and nature’s incredible, edible gifts.” Chamisal was the first planted vineyard in the Edna Valley, and it’s celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. What better place to celebrate this year’s harvest?
Taste and explore wines from 30 wineries at this year’s event. Visit with winemakers during the Grand Tasting (2 - 5 pm), and for an extra special event, attend the Rare and Reserve Tasting (1 - 2 pm), where you can sample small lot and library wines in a limited, intimate setting. And of course, don’t forget the food and entertainment! A fullblown Santa Maria-style barbecue will be on the grill, prepared by Goldland BBQ. Enjoy live music performed by the Honey Boys — Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo alumni. For tickets, participating wineries and more, slocoastwine.com/ events/harvest-on-the-coast 34

Garagiste Festival November 10-11 Mid-November brings one of the most exciting fall events to Paso Robles, the 12th-anniversary Garagiste Festival. It’s described by the Los Angeles Times as “One of the premier wine events of the year, this is one not to miss.” This year’s festival features about 60 small, boutique producers. The Garagiste focuses on winemakers producing 1,500 cases or less. Although some have tasting rooms open by appointment, the vast majority of Garagiste winemakers pour only at this event. Don’t miss the opportunity to try a variety of exceptional wines and meet the winemakers of these artisanal micro-producers — only at the Garagiste Festival. This year features several first-time exhibitors, which include Red Door Ranch Vineyards, Ella’s Vineyard, Ulloa Cellars, and 12ECVineyard. Taste and visit with winemakers and owners, and try varietals you may not find locally grown very often, such as Teroldego, Albariño, and Riesling, in addition to Rhônes, Bordeaux, plus an assortment of exciting blends. While you’re sipping wine, don’t overlook the extensive gourmet charcuterie table, with cheeses, meats, fruits, and vegetables. Catered by Vivant Fine Cheese in Paso Robles, this is a premium accompaniment. The evening before the grand tasting is the rare and reserve tasting event. This exclusive tasting features one-of-a-kind library wines from the exhibitors. This is an opportunity to experience and taste unique wines, varietals, and in many cases, older vintages. As you taste, enjoy a delicious buffet catered by Junction Food and Friends. Attendance is limited, and tickets sell out quickly.
Photos courtesy Garagiste
Bring your friends (and your palate)! With dozens of small-scale wineries, Garagiste is a great place to discover your new favorite wines.
Another staple of the Garagiste is the morning seminar. This year’s seminar — Coming Full Circle: The Path from Enology Student to Living the Garagiste Dream — features Cal Poly Garagiste Festival Scholarship recipients who have gone on to become winemakers. But the fun doesn’t end after the grand tasting. Kick back and socialize at the Rockin’ After-Party with winemakers and fellow wine lovers. Food, music, and adult beverages — it’s the perfect ending to a great weekend! For tickets and more information, see garagistefestival.com. In addition, Paso Robles has lots more going on this fall. Visit pasowine.com/events for a list of vineyard tours, grape stomps, dinners, and so much more. A little further on down the road, we’re also looking forward to the Cambria Art and Wine Festival, set for Jan. 26 to 28. cambriachamber.org/cambria-art-wine-festival california101guide.com

Blend Fest Save the date: February 22 – 25 It’s not a fall event, but we can’t end this celebration of vino without mentioning one more festival: BlendFest! This is the region’s only wine festival dedicated to blending, offering a selection of exciting choices. Paso Robles’ winemakers love to blend wine, mixing different varietals to craft something unique and delicious. Throughout the event, BlendFest celebrates these creative rule-breaking, unconventional winemakers and their blends. For tickets and more, check out pasowine.com/events/ blendfest-on-the-coast. Día de los Muertos translates in English as

winning movie Coco. This animated film tells the story of a young boy named Miguel, who dreams of becoming a musician — but his family forbids it. Miguel journeys to the Land of the Dead to understand why his family won’t let him play music. On his quest, Miguel unites with his ancestors in the spiritual realm and brings his family back together while healing the past. Very heartwarming.
According to the History Channel, “The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration.” It is celebrated from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, and has recently become more Here are a few of my favorite recipes mainstream, thanks to one of my for friends and family celebrating favorite movies: the Academy Award- Día de los Muertos.

thermometer, heat milk over low until it reaches 90 degrees. Remove from heat.
Fragrant with anise and orange flower water, this Mexican sweet bread is eaten during the weeks before and after Día de los Muertos. The sugarglazed loaf is typically decorated with a skull or a crossbones shape, with the crossing of the bones meant to represent the four directions of the Aztec calendar.
Whisk the eggs and orange blossom water in a medium mixing bowl. Add warm milk and whisk to combine. Add the egg mixture to a stand mixer along with the yeast and one cup of flour. Mix on medium-low speed to combine. Continue adding the remaining flour one cup at a time until a sticky dough forms — about four to five minutes.
Bread Ingredients: ½ cup unsalted butter (softened, plus more for the bowl) ¾ cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon star anise (ground) 1 ¼ teaspoons salt 6 cups bread flour (divided) 1 ¼ cups whole milk 4 large eggs (room temperature) 1 teaspoon orange blossom water 2 ¼-ounce packets of instant dry yeast 1 large egg (beaten for egg wash)
Glaze Ingredients: ¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice ¼ cup granulated sugar (plus more for sprinkling) Bread Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine ½ cup of butter, sugar, star anise, salt, and ½ cup of flour. Mix on medium speed until combined, scraping sides with a rubber spatula as needed. In a small saucepan fitted with a candy

Yolanda’s Pozole While there are many delicious versions of pozole, most authentic pozole recipes include three essential ingredients: pork, dried chiles, and hominy. It is comfort food for sure, thanks to tender chunks of slow-cooked pork flavored with smoky cumin and loads of dried chiles. This family recipe was given to me by my friend, Yolanda, who got it from her grandmother. Makes 8 servings. Ingredients: 2 ounces dried ancho chiles 8 cups low-sodium chicken broth (divided) 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 3 pounds pork shoulder (cut into 2-inch pieces) 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 yellow onion (chopped) 6 garlic cloves (chopped) 2 teaspoons dried Mexican oregano 2 bay leaves 3 15-ounce cans of white hominy (rinsed and drained) Shredded green cabbage (garnish) Thinly sliced radishes (garnish) Queso fresco (garnish) Avocado (diced for garnish) Cilantro leaves (for garnish) Lime wedges (for serving at the table) california101guide.com

Let stand until the chiles are softened, 15 to 20 minutes. Blend until smooth. Set aside. In a small bowl, combine the cumin, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle the mixture evenly all over the pork. In the same Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Cook the pork in batches until browned
Heat orange juice and sugar in a saucepan over low heat until the sugar orange glaze and sprinkle immediately with the granulated sugar. Cut into large wedges to serve.
Reduce the heat to medium and add the onion, garlic, and oregano to the Dutch oven. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, five to six minutes. Add the bay leaves and the remaining cups of broth. Increase the heat to mediumhigh, and just as it starts to bubble on the sides, reduce the heat to simmer. Return the cooked pork to the Dutch oven. Gradually pour the blended chile sauce through a fine mesh strainer into the Dutch oven, pressing as needed. Discard the solids in the strainer. Reduce the heat to mediumlow; partially cover, and cook at a low simmer, stirring occasionally, until the pork is tender — about two hours. Using two forks, break the pork into bite-sized chunks. Add hominy and simmer for 15 minutes more. To serve, top with green cabbage, radishes, queso fresco, diced avocado, and cilantro, as desired. Bring lime wedges to the table for squeezing over the pozole. Tip: Pozole is even better when made a day or two ahead of time. Before reheating, scrape any solidified fat off the top, and discard. Baked Chile Rellenos This recipe has the flavors you love in fried Chile Rellenos and is baked casserole style. By avoiding the deep fry, these chile rellenos are relatively low in calories. My recipe uses mild poblanos, a light batter, and two types of cheese. To make it easier to prepare, I use canned enchilada sauce. Makes 4 servings. Ingredients: 4 large poblano peppers Canola oil 1 ½ cups green enchilada sauce 8 ounces Oaxaca cheese (shredded) 2 large eggs ½ cup whole milk ½ teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon salt 52

½ teaspoon black pepper ¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup club soda ½ cup cheddar cheese (shredded) Directions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Spray a 9-by-13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Rinse and dry poblano peppers and rub canola oil all over each pepper. Place peppers on a foil-covered, ribbed sheet pan and bake for 10 minutes. Rotate peppers and cook for an additional 10 minutes. Remove peppers from the pan and place into a large Ziploc storage bag. Seal the bag and allow it to steam for 10 minutes. Remove peppers from the pack and very carefully peel off the

blackened skin. Cut off the top of the pepper and scoop out the seeds using a spoon. Rinse off, dry, and set aside. Pour the enchilada sauce into the bottom of the baking dish and spread evenly. Carefully stuff the cheese into the poblanos and place them on top of the sauce in the baking dish. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, stir in milk, seasonings, and flour. Stir in club soda. Pour batter over the peppers in the baking dish. Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top and bake in a 375-degree oven for 30 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the batter is golden. Tip: I save prep time by using a can of enchilada sauce. If you have a good recipe for enchilada sauce and have the time to make it, use it instead. california101guide.com

This spicy Mexican hot chocolate is often enjoyed during Día de los Muertos. According to the Mission Chocolate & Desserts website, “Mexican chocolate is a style of drinking chocolate. The Aztecs and the Maya of these regions were the first peoples to make and drink chocolate for thousands of years before the old world discovered it. The word chocolate comes from xocolatl (bitter water), from the ancient Aztec language, Náhuatl.”

Some of The Santa Barbara Smokehouse’s most popular products include:
Cambridge House Royal – Robust Smoke Flavor Using the finest quality fresh Atlantic salmon, this classic variety is hand-cured with sea salt and fresh herbs, and smoked in small batches in oak and apple wood from Santa Ynez. According to The Santa Barbara Smokehouse website, “This local area is home to some of the world’s finest vineyards and for that reason we also select and burn aged oak chardonnay barrels which completes this very unique recipe.” The result is a paper-thin smoked salmon with a rich buttery texture and robust smoke flavor. Cambridge House Balmoral – Medium Smoke Flavor Starting again with top-quality fresh Atlantic salmon, sea salt and fresh herbs, this variety is smoked using aged oak whisky barrels. Along with a rich, buttery texture, this salmon comes with a medium sweet smoke flavor, which The Santa Barbara Smokehouse says is “reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands cure.”
Cambridge House Mild – Light Smoke Flavor As with the first two, fresh Atlantic salmon provides the base for this remarkable smoked salmon. Fallen oak logs from the Santa Ynez Valley give it that smoky goodness. “With its delicate, very light smoke flavor, this salmon is the quintessential ‘London Cure,’” according to The Santa Barbara Smokehouse folks. Summerland Loving
By Nicole Leonetti
Summerland: the name alone evokes images of a magical place you can only visit in your dreams. Lucky for us, it’s a very real place, and it could not be easier to visit! Located directly off Highway 101 between Carpinteria and Montecito, Summerland boasts beach vibes, small town
hospitality, and efficient accessibility (most of the businesses lie along one street, Lillie Avenue). It was founded as a Spiritualist community back in 1883 by Ohio spiritualist and real estate speculator H.L. Williams. The discovery of oil and the building of Highway 101 may have redirected the focus of the town, but its spiritual side — and its sense of community — remain strong.

The town is maintained by Summerland Beautiful, a nonprofit organization that facilitates a number of projects, including beach clean-ups and block parties. Summerland Beautiful president, D’Arcy Cornwall, emphasizes that it is “a community where people really take care of each other.” While there are lots of roadside stop-offs along the 101, this little community deserves a spot near the top of your list.
EAT
My first stop is Red Kettle Coffee, where you can find, you guessed it, coffee! It’s hard to miss Red Kettle, with its eightfoot gnome out front. In addition to coffee, they offer delicious smoothies, tempting pastries, and unforgettable empanadas sourced from Photo by Celina Robinson the popular Buena Onda Pastries at Red Kettle Coffee. in Santa Barbara. Menu favorites include the Snickerdoodle Latte (espresso, brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon) — which tastes just like the cookie — and the Salty Bumblebee (espresso, pink Himalayan salt, and honey). Of course, they have seasonal options, such as the Pumpkin Spice Latte, to get everyone into the holiday mood. My go-to is the smoothies, especially the Summerland Smoothie, which has pineapple, mango, banana, and milk.
fresh, never frozen burgers. Tinker’s has a 50s diner vibe with counter seats and patio seating. Everything here is made to order, and menu favorites include the Double Cheeseburger and Bacon Cheeseburger. While a burger and a shake sound perfect right about now, they also have other signature items, such as chili and tacos. When asked to share his favorite thing about Summerland, Richard was quick to respond that he loves the small-town feeling and being close to the ocean. Nearby, you will find the Sweet Wheel Farm and Flowers farmers market cart, featuring sustainable, local, and chemical-free produce. In addition to seasonal fruits and vegetables, they also have a lovely selection of flowers and dry goods. Another great dining option for breakfast or lunch is Summerland Beach Café, located in a Victorian house built back in 1893. I love to go for breakfast and enjoy one (or two) of their mimosa flights. Popular at breakfast is the Summerland Ranch Hand, with eggs, applewood smoked ham, thick-cut bacon, a sausage patty, O.P. potatoes, and an English muffin. If you come in around lunchtime, the burgers and sandwiches will hit the spot. While the indoor seating
The Red Kettle has been open since 2016 and has quickly become the locals’ spot for a caffeine fix. And no wonder, with its welcoming space and cozy, dog-friendly back patio. Along with food and drink, you’ll also find an eclectic assortment of cards and gifts made by local artists. Red Kettle Coffee owner, Megan Tingstrom, spent her childhood summers in Summerland, and now loves being a resident and business owner here. “I just love our community!” she told me. She considers her staff, many of whom have worked there for years, to be family.

Speaking of family, Megan’s father owns Tinker’s Burger, which is right next door. Richard Tingstrom opened Tinker’s Burger more than 36 years ago. Open 360 days a year, this burger shop has survived fires, floods, mudslides, and rainstorms over the years, and managed to stay open to feed first responders during those tough times. is charming, you will find the patio packed with visitors and adorable dogs enjoying the ocean breeze!
In between meals, you can visit one of my favorite spots: Summerland Winery Tasting Room. This bright and airy boutique winery offers exceptional wine out on its dog-friendly patio. do in between eating. Lucky for you, there are a bounty of options in Summerland. While I am not much of a shopper, I often find myself buying all sorts of things while in Summerland. This town has that effect on me, and I credit that to the unique stores and experiences here. One of my favorites, Field & Fort, has everything you can dream of for your entertaining needs, and as a bonus, serves coffee and light fare as well. While on the subject of manifestation, my happy place in Summerland is The Sacred Space. This is a shop, but it’s also a garden — and a state of mind. It offers everything for your spiritual journey including crystals, books, incense, candles, and jewelry, while also satisfying your décor needs with statues and artwork. Jack and Rose Herschorn opened it 18 years ago and handed over the reins to Amy Cooper earlier this year. Amy had been a customer of The Sacred Space for years while owning a shop of her own in Santa Barbara. Along with investor Pete Muller, Amy is preserving The Sacred Space for the community, while also enhancing its offerings. The Sacred Space also holds events and workshops, such as tarot readings, sound baths, and guided meditations, including free community meditations twice a month (find dates at thesacredspace.com or @thesacredspaceus on Instagram). Amy mentioned to me her favorite thing about Summerland is its many independent businesses. You will not find a chain store or restaurant in Summerland — just smalltown vibes and beach views. While on that topic, let’s talk about the beach! Just a short walk from Lillie Avenue is Lookout Park, with its beautiful views of the coastline, picnic areas, and most importantly, access to Summerland Beach. You can easily spend hours at the beach relaxing, reading, and playing with your dog (on-leash, of course). But did you know that you can also go horseback riding on Summerland Beach? Los Padres Outfitters offers a variety of horseback riding options. Starting as Los Padres Wilderness Outfitters in 86
Fall 2023
1969, the company has been owned for the last 18 years by Graham Goodfield, a seasoned equestrian and true cowboy. He and his team are available seven days a week (weather and tide permitting) and offer year-round private riding experiences for up to six riders at a time. One of the most popular options is the 90-minute beach ride, where you cross over the freeway overpass onto Summerland Beach. They also offer picnic, sunset, or customized rides. There’s even a special proposal package, which includes a photographer to capture the special moment. No experience is necessary for a Los Padres Outfitters beach ride, just make sure you wear pants and close-toed shoes. They have horses and mules for all skill levels, and you are safe in the capable hands of their knowledgeable wranglers. After your beach-ride, you may be ready for a massage. Summerland Salon & Spa has an array of massages and facials to choose from, and every hair treatment you can imagine. You will leave Summerland more refreshed and rejuvenated than when you arrived. If you are looking for a unique experience in Summerland, then look no further than the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary, located right on Lillie Avenue in the middle of Summerland. For a small donation, you can wander through their lush tropical gardens and visit with their 50-plus birds. You will find california101guide.com

Summerland. If you are staying the night, check in at the Inn on Summer Hill. The Inn has 16 beautifully appointed rooms and one spacious suite. Each room has a fireplace, and the balcony rooms have ocean views. Also on-site is a small putting green, a jacuzzi, and a spa room for massages. The complimentary breakfast varies daily, depending on what the chef dreams up. Hotel guests also enjoy afternoon wine and cheese, and a sweet bite in the evenings — which is a perfect way to end your day in Summerland. The Inn was built by Paul and Mabel Shults in 1989. Mabel, an interior designer, and Paul, a builder, melded their talents perfectly to create the Inn. The New England B&B vibe at the Inn is no accident; the Shults family took a road trip vacation on the East Coast, where they picked up ideas during stays in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Nantucket.
Today, The Inn is still operated by the Shults family. Paul still works daily and handles all the accounting. His daughter, Paulette Bermant, currently runs the Inn. The family has always been very involved and insists on keeping the Inn a quaint and inviting experience. As Paulette says, the Inn at Summer Hill is a “Home away from home; we consider it to be like staying in someone’s guest room.” What they love about Summerland is the charm of a small, seaside community tucked between the mountains and the ocean. You can walk to the beach and then hike the trails nearby. “Summerland is small but has a big heart,” Paulette added, “and the community looks out for one By now you’re probably tuckered out after all the fun exploring another.” This town — and its locals — always manage to give me the urge to pack up my bags and move to this slice of heaven along the ocean. While that might not be in the cards right now, I’m glad to know this sweet little Central Coast paradise is always there for me, just a quick trip up the 101.

Relaxation (and romance) at Avila’s Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa For thousands of years, humans have known the healing properties of mineral hot springs. The ancient Egyptians and Romans lauded these natural wonders for their ability to soothe body aches, relax tension, and even revitalize skin and hair. While the Central Coast has several natural hot springs, one of our favorites is Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa. This peaceful little slice of paradise sits on the hillside above Avila Beach, where oak and sycamore groves shade private tubs fed by hot mineral springs. Guests can rent a tub by the hour or choose to stay longer in one of many room options — all of which have their own private hot tubs on the patio or balcony. With a spa, restaurant, gorgeous grounds, and plenty of activities nearby, Sycamore Mineral Springs is great for a romantic getaway — or just a quick pit-stop on your drive on the 101.

Accommodations Choices, choices. Sycamore Mineral Springs has lots to choose from! All, of course, come with your own private hot tub, which can’t be seen by other guests. (You’ll be able to control the temperature of the water, too.) Standard rooms are anything but “standard,” with spacious living quarters and lovely views off the balcony/porch. Some rooms are located in the West Meadows Preserve, just a short walk/cart ride from the main property. No cars are allowed in this area, so you can take full advantage of the peace and quiet this area offers. Looking to bring the whole family, or host a larger gathering with friends? Sycamore now has several dogfriendly rooms (there’s even a dog menu available at the restaurant). You’ll find dog-friendly rooms really are just that, with special amenities just for your pal. 96

Light at Sensorio Bruce Munro’s solar-powered light show is 15-acres of jaw-dropping joy in Paso Robles By Misty Hall
Paso Robles: Land of gently rolling hillsides, dotted with oak trees, and blanketed in vineyards. During the daytime, it is a playground for wine lovers, with more than 200 wineries taking advantage of the many microclimates this topography affords. In the evening, there’s a totally different way to experience this landscape: Sensorio. With well over 100,000 color-changing lights spread across 15 acres of rural hills, this awe-inspiring spectacle has attracted world-wide attention in its four years of existence.

The idea for Sensorio started about as far from Paso as you can get, in Uluru, Australia. It was there that Paso locals Ken and Bobbi Hunter discovered an incredible light exhibit, Field of Light, by renowned British artist Bruce Munro. It blanketed the nighttime landscape in an explosion of light and color, with the sacred rock of Uluru standing sentinel over it all. Munro’s mastery over the technical as well as artistic aspects of the project deeply inspired the Hunters, who reached out to Munro to see if he’d be interested in creating something new back in Paso. “They had already been dreaming about creating an ‘inspiring entertainment garden’ that would serve as a ‘playground of the mind’ that also honored nature on the rolling hills of Paso Robles,” said Ryan Hopple, the general manager of Sensorio. Munro gladly accepted the Hunters’ offer. The Paso partnership would task Munro with his biggest-ever piece, with the added challenge of being entirely solar-powered. In May 2019, the Central Coast got its first Munro: Sensorio: Field of Light. It started with 58,000 stems of light, scattered across the hillsides. Visitors could stroll through the lights, which illuminate multiple acres “in subtle blooms of morphing colour that describe the undulating landscape,” according to brucemunro.co.uk. Not surprisingly, the Sensorio exhibit was a big hit — as Munro’s works have been for years, all over the world, from the UK to Nashville to Denmark and South Korea. So popular was the

original Sensorio exhibit that Munro agreed to expand it, first to 100,000 stems, and then with three new exhibits on the property: Light Towers, Gone Fishing, and Fireflies. Light Towers tips its hat to Paso’s wine country, with 69 illuminated towers made of 17,000 wine bottles. Fiber optic lights in the bottles changes colors in sync with a musical soundtrack. Gone Fishing is comprised of 750 fishing poles threaded with fiber optics, set in a series of semi-circles under which visitors can walk. “To me, fishing has always
conjured up the notion of removing oneself from the here and now to a place of peace and reflection,” said Munro. Nearby lies Fireflies — 9,720 whimsical bursts of light that dance in the breeze. “It is my belief that light is a wonderful medium to connect mind, body, and soul with the natural environment,” Munro said. “I hope this installation instills a sense of wonder and surprise to those that see it.”

Eco-friendly art Munro stresses that he doesn’t want his installations to overshadow the natural beauty of his settings. He is “acutely conscious of light pollution issues and has devoted himself to creating work that interacts harmoniously with its environment,” said Hopple. This dedication resonated with the Hunters, as well. From its earliest inception, the Sensorio project honored the landscape with environmentally friendly

practices. “For this exhibit,” Hoople added, “the ground was carefully excavated to ensure the heritage oak trees dotting the site, as well as the natural plants and animals, were not disturbed.” Before any work began, Sensorio worked closely with a slew of environmental and government agencies — from the City of Paso Robles to the Army Corps of Engineers and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife — to ensure the work was done in an ethical, responsible way. “An

exhaustive list and classification of every biological asset historically and presently on site, a Floristic Inventory Report with an exhaustive list and classification of every species of plant life on site, and even a Cultural Resources report” were part of the work, Hopple said. To power Munro’s exhibits, 58 solar panels soak up the Central Coast sunshine during the day. “All light emitting equipment has been carefully selected based upon its low power consumption,” said Hopple. “The fact that one can see stars while in the center of the exhibit demonstrates how little light is actually emitted. The Field of Light installation at Sensorio utilizes just under 5KW per hour — the equivalent consumption of two and a half average houses, spread over 15 acres.” When standing on the terrace above the lights, it’s hard to believe that such a large-scale exhibit requires so little power. 114

The experience The best way to view Sensorio? Get there before sundown, so you can watch the exchange of light as the sun goes down and the lights come on. And be prepared to move — you’re going to want to get up close to each of Munro’s four exhibits. All the pathways are smooth and ADA accessible, so those with mobility issues can participate as well. After strolling around, you’ll find plenty of areas to kick back and watch the light show (and lots to do, as well). Grab a bite to eat and local brews at the Mercado, then enjoy live acoustic music at the picnic tables, fire pits, or lawn area. For an elevated experience, get tickets that include admission to the Terrace Experience. This includes priority entry as well as private restrooms, an Airstream bar, fireside tables, heaters, a beverage, and “special seating on the terrace with the best views of the exhibition,” Hopple said. Additional menu items can be pre-ordered with these tickets. california101guide.com

Sensorio and the Hunter family have more plans in the works for the future, including a new exhibit, Dimension, opening later this year. “This new exhibit will feature walk-in artworks and music to create a visual/ audio experience that will transport you into an uncharted dimension,” said Hopple. Further down the line are even more exhibits, as well as plans to build a hotel on the site. Check the website for special events, such as Sunrise at Sensorio. Sipping in San Simeon History, wine, and nature on the Central Coast Photos and story by Adam Nuñez
California’s Central Coast Highway 1 boasts some of the greatest sights in the entire country. Numerous idyllic beaches and forested mountains lay sprawled along this road with stopping points like Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Cambria. Travelers from far and wide flock to these destinations for the world-class wine and food. Wine enthusiasts, or really anyone who enjoys wine tasting and beautiful views, won’t want to miss a very special tasting room just 10 minutes north of Cambria. It’s the Hearst Ranch Winery in San Simeon located right on the William R. Hearst Memorial State Beach. It’s an ideal place for wine tasting or sharing a bottle with friends and family while soaking up the beach views directly in front of you. And by directly, I mean only about 20 yards from your comfy umbrella chair.
Incredible views from the patio of Hearst Ranch Winery.

Peaceful views along the San Simeon coast, just a short walk from the tasting room.
The Hearst Ranch Winery has a special story. It’s a partnership between the Hearst family and Jim and Debby Saunders. Around 1994, Jim and Debby had been selling berries and juices under their company name. They attended a charity event hosted by the Hearst Corporation and got a ticket for a day at the Castle with the great-grandson of William Randolf Hearst, Steve Hearst. It was there that Jim and Steve’s friendship and partnership began. Fast-forward to 2010, when

the Saunders family started Hearst Ranch Winery at Sebastian’s General Store. Then, in 2019, they purchased the ocean-front property, where today you can sit, sip, and partake in fine wine and lovely views. While enjoying some wine and food, you’ll notice the beach lies comfortably in a bay with the pier to your left (east) and a forested peninsula to your right (west). There is an easy-to-follow flat trail on the peninsula with sweeping views of the bay. Drive or walk a quarter mile toward the pier to a parking lot to access the beach, pier, and trail. During the fall season, you can sometimes spot up-close views of migrating humpback whales. San Simeon lies in the southernmost region of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, which stretches nearly 280 miles northward to San Francisco. This is some of the most pristine ocean water in the entire country — ideal for viewing wildlife. It’s quite common Perfect pours in a picture-perfect place.

to observe sea otters nestled in kelp forests near the pier or along the peninsula trail. You can also watch sea lions bask in the sun along the peninsula’s small beaches. To access this trail, simply walk along the beach toward the forested peninsula, and you can’t miss the wide trail on your right leading up into the trees. The trail is about 4 miles in total, but you can meander at your leisure and turn around at any point. The views are spectacular the entire

way. The air carries a sweet earthy scent of ocean spray and mature Eucalyptus trees. There are also many Monterey Cypresses, which are iconic in this region. Bring a blanket, snacks, and some wine for a perfect picnic. You can gaze back toward the calm bay, up toward Hearst Castle on the mountaintop, or out into the depths of the Pacific Ocean. You can even bring your dogs (as long as they are leashed). Of course, we can’t mention San Simeon without recognizing its most famous landmark:
california101guide.com
Hearst Castle, the crown jewel of California’s Central Coast. And rightfully so. From 1919 to 1947, newspaper magnate William Hearst worked with genius architect Julia Morgan to design this masterpiece home with stunning ocean and mountain vistas. Along with the main Castle (a.k.a. “La Casa Grande”) there are three side villas, two swimming pools, rose gardens, a tennis court, an indoor movie theater, and world-class art throughout the property. Visitors come from all around the world to visit this architectural triumph. It’s definitely worth a visit. And after a morning tour of the Castle, what better activity than visiting a wine tasting room by the sea? It’s located just a stone’s throw away from the Castle’s Visitor Center. You could spend a full day exploring history, wine, and nature. Don’t miss an amazing day at the Hearst Ranch Winery in San Simeon. To learn more about their Paso Robles winery location, events, memberships, and more, visit hearstranchwinery.com. The tasting room is located at 442 SLO San Simeon Rd., San Simeon, and is open from 11 am to 4 pm. What better way to wrap up your tour of Hearst Castle than to spend the afternoon sipping on the shore in San Simeon?
