Editor’s Note

Seems like all we’ve been able to talk about this year is the weather. First it was the raging winter storms that decimated trails and wiped out roads. And then, it was the June Gloom. The overcast skies showed up two months early, and as I sit here writing on an early summer morning, it’s still going strong.

But the sun will return, and with it, those long, glorious days that make summer on the Central Coast so iconic. In the pages that follow, we’ve compiled a list of some perfect summertime activities to help you make the most of the season.

Hop on a bike and cycle the Central Coast (PAGE 26). We highlight three bike rental shops that will not only provide you with excellent rides, but also insider info on the best places to pedal — through the city, along the sand, and even (if you’re so inclined) into the wilderness for some off-road excitement.

Set sail in the Santa Barbara Channel (PAGE 88). The area is ideal for sailing! And whether you want to learn to man the helm, or simply relax on the rail with a glass of local wine, the Santa Barbara Sailing Center is your one-stop shop.

Peer at some piers! (PAGE 100) The Central Coast is home to several piers, each with their own history and charm — from San Simeon’s quiet, pastoral pier to the exciting, activity-laden Stearns Wharf.

Head south from Santa Barbara and check out Carpinteria (PAGE 43). This quiet little beach town is home to “the world’s safest beach!” But before you hit the sand, wander through the myriad shops, restaurants, breweries, and adventure opportunities along Carpinteria and Linden avenues.

Get the kids and take to the skies. For decades, the VC Comets have been flying radio control airplanes at Lake Casitas (PAGE 58). There’s nothing these guys love more than helping kids (and adults too) learn this exciting sport. Come watch them perform complex aerobatics, or flex your STEM muscles and try it for yourself!

Get out the grill (PAGE 74). Chef Randy has put together a summer smorgasbord for us centered around a childhood favorite of his: porterhouse steaks. He’s also got ideas on how to use up those zukes in your garden, as well as a twist on avocados, a mouth-watering mac and cheese, and a sublime fruit salad.

Sip something summery (PAGE 125). Sun-drenched days were made for rosés and white wines. Whether you’re in the Funk Zone, the Wine Ghetto or the Edna Valley, the Central Coast has plenty of whites and pinks to choose from!

Decipher Cypher (PAGE 12). Winemaker Susan A. Mahler — better known by her acronym, SAM — blends art and science to create masterful wines at her Paso Robles Tasting Lounge. Located in Paso’s historic train depot, the ambiance pairs perfectly with her blends and small bites.

There’s so much more to explore in this region! What are your favorites? Let us know!

Cypher Cracks the Code

Paso winemaker SAM balances art and science

Whenever women make a name for themselves in maledominated industries, there’s a lot of talk about glass ceilings.

Cypher winemaker Susan A. Mahler, better known by her acronym, SAM, has smashed through a fair few in her life. But the athlete, pilot, scientist, chef, and winemaker never thought much about it.

“I was a tomboy. I didn’t play with Barbies, I didn’t like wearing dresses. My mom just let me be me,” she said. “She signed me up for T-ball.” In sixth grade, the coach called her mom and said she was the only girl signed up for the whole league, but that she could play on the boys’ team. “My mom asked me, ‘Well, what do you want to do?’ And I said, ‘I wanna play ball!’” That pretty much sums up SAM. If she wants to do something, she just … does. What glass ceiling?

SAM’s journey to winemaking was certainly not one she had planned. Growing up in the Midwest, she developed a love for the outdoors, with a lifelong goal of earning her pilot’s license. She did just that in Colorado and began flying cargo planes and co-piloting jets. But eventually, another passion (this one, for science) held greater appeal, and she decided to head West to UC Berkeley to get a degree in earth science.

It was at Berkeley that she met a friend with an interest in starting a wine brand. “I

SAM, pouring at a recent tasting event.

thought it would be fun to do on the side,” SAM said. “On the side” quickly turned into something much larger as she and her business partner built up Four Vines. The Paso-based brand expanded quickly to 160,000 cases and national distribution. SAM found herself so busy in Paso Robles that she “jumped off a cliff and moved to Paso” in 2002.

She put her earth science degree to good use in the Four Vines vineyards. “For understanding microclimates and all of that, the stuff I’d studied was really good background for that.”

Her detail-oriented pilot’s brain, meanwhile, helped her stay on top of the business side of things. At that point, however, she left the winemaking to her business partner.

“It was all great — super interesting and fun,” she said. “That’s when Paso wasn’t really on the map yet, even for Southern California … when I first started coming down here, it was pretty sleepy.” But having spent so much time in the vineyards, she saw the incredible potential Paso Robles held. “I thought, ‘Wow, one day it’ll be like Healdsburg,’” in Sonoma wine country.

In 2010, the appeal of actually making wines herself began calling. So, SAM sold Four Vines, and ventured out on her own, creating Cypher Wines. With help from some friends in the area who were also winemakers, she took over the winemaking in 2016. “I had been around it enough — I’d been in the

cellar and helped out on the crush pad, and learned the basics. Enough to say, ‘OK, I’ll take it from here and do my own thing.’”

Her “own thing” turned out to be many things — much like the winemaker herself. A look at her wine list shows whites, rosés, and reds alike. “I do a lot of wines! I have more than 12 different red wines because I want to have different (ones) for my wine club.”

The Elemental series offers single varietals, elements from which SAM’s Rhône blends are created. Those blends each feature three varietals, with the exception of Fifth Element and Slayer, which highlight five. Fifth Element leads with Mourvèdre; Slayer, with Cabernet Sauvignon. “They’re a bigger challenge than doing a three-varietal blend,” SAM said. “There’s more complexity. I really enjoyed the challenge behind doing that.”

Slayer is part of her Anime series, which features Animeinspired labels and Zinfandel blends that each go in “totally different directions,” she said. “But I’m very systematic about what those directions are going to be.” They are especially close to her heart, marrying her passion for martial arts (hence, the labels) and Zinfandel (from her Four Vines days). Her name on social media is ZinPunk — which also happens to be the name of her Zin-Tannat-Petit Sirah blend.

Ultimately, she said, she approaches winemaking from a scientific perspective. “I’m all about the science.” The name “Cypher” is a nod to this, and to the creativity that goes along with it. “Cypher, as in, ‘deciphering the code,’” she said. “Winemaking and growing wine grapes is a balance of art and science. You need both of those things, and you’re cracking the code to get it (the wine) to where you want it to be.”

Now that she’s cracked the code on her 2021 bottling, SAM is turning her focus to another fun project: Dirt Candy. “It’s an old vintage port-style wine,” she said, which will be available in the fall.

And good wine naturally goes hand in hand with food — which is why SAM includes food pairings with each tasting at Cypher’s Tasting Lounge. “I’m focused on very specific little bites that go well with the wine. Flavors, textures, etc.

14 Summer 2023 california101guide.com
More intimate nooks on Cypher’s patio.

It helps people focus on the wine flavors … I go way into the foodie thing.”

SAM’s large garden includes herbs, fruit trees, hops, “all different kinds of stuff,” from which she can craft these small bites. “In the summer, I’m taking it a step above a

white or rosé slushy. I’ve done herbal-infused wine sorbets, wine jellies with herbal infusions from my garden.” One particularly delicious bite featured a matcha tea cookie with a rose and hibiscus jelly, and powdered, dried strawberries sprinkled on top.

And it all comes together in the Cypher Tasting Lounge. Located in Paso’s original train depot built in 1886, Cypher gets a dose of nostalgia as the Coast Starlight train regularly pulls into the station. Folks can get off the train and walk right into the tasting lounge, she said. The space boasts tons of natural light as well as historic charm, with its original flooring and windows intact. She paired that classic setting with a mix of styles and furniture, “So it feels like you’re in my home. Like I’m standing in my kitchen, and I’ve just invited you over for dinner. It’s a very personal, friendly, good vibe.” Much like the winemaker herself.

Find Cypher at 740 Pine Street, in downtown Paso Robles. Visit cypherwinery.com or call (805) 237-0055 for more.

Toby and her husband al ways loved their ol d Schwinn cr uisers. But as they got older, they gradually acknowledged that they might need a little something more. Enter Pedego. Toby tried one of these electric bikes 11 years ago at a friend's party, and was immediately hooked, she said. "I finally talked my husband into it, and so we've had our Pedegos for 11 years ... And we still have those same bikes! Even though

When Toby decided t o retire in January 2021, she wanted to find something to keep her occupied. It just so happened that her son, Warren Kaiser, was also looking for a change. So, they took their passion for Pedego and turned it into a business. Pismo Beach was a natural choice for their shop. Miles of coastline and cute little beach towns were tailormade for electric bike riding. At Toby's shop - which Warren helms, along with his fr iend John Kuebler - several Pedego electric bikes are avail able for hourly or daily rentals. B ikes can also be pu rchased here, as well. Each Pedego is electric, and all of them have pedal assist and a throttle. Pedego has more than a dozen styles to

choose from, all with different purposes. "They have beach c r uisers, some more E u ropean city-style bikes, ones with really low step-throughs for people who can't lift their foot that high," Toby said. "There's a folding bike too ... and an electric trike, and

If you're in the market to rent rather than buy, Pedego

Pismo Beach offers a handful of styles - and a truckload of advice on where to ride them. "We're right on High way 1, a l ittle t wo-lane road with bike lanes," Toby said. They instruct riders to "head north and go through Pismo and Shel l Beach, then get on Bob Jon es Trail. It follows a little creek and takes you up a hill overlooking all of Avila Beach and San Luis Obispo Bay and the golf course (Avila Beach Golf Resort)." The golf course has a nice bar and grill - an ideal place to stop for refreshments. Those with kids will ap preciate the Avila Valley Barn, a farm offering fresh fruits, veggies, baked goods, and a petting zoo of farm animals. On weekends during the summer, they often have live music as well.

Those wishing to go a little f u rther can head down into Avila Beach itsel f to explore its restaurants, shops, and piers. "A half-day rental is the perfect amount of time to go all the way to Avila, eat lunch, and come back." Another popular destination: Old Edna. "You can go inland about four miles through rolling hills, passing wineries, " Toby said.

Old Edna's Sextant Wine Tasting Room and Gourmet Deli offers fabulous wines and great deli sandwiches.

mountains. Along with a huge variety of bikes - electric and traditional, for kids and adults alike - Cal Coast also offers several guided bike tours. "Santa Barbara is known for fantastic road biking routes," said Elyse King, office coordinator. "When you take a guided tour, you don't have to worry about where to go."

Cal Coast's city tour takes v isitors along the Cabrillo Beach Blvd. Bike Trail, which runs at the

edge of the sand, toward Montecito. ''The guides love to take people to Butterfly Beach, which is so beautiful," Elyse said. From there, they head to downtown Montecito, along Coast Village Road. Then they'll circle over to East Beach, then West Beach, and stop at Stearns Wharf. If there's time, they'll go through the Santa Barbara Harbor and up toward Santa Barbara City College where there's a gorgeous lookout point that's perfect for selfies. Sometimes, Elyse added, folks

would like to head downtown where guides show off historic landmarks, including the iconic courthouse, the Mission, the Presidio, and more.

Those wishing to maximize their time along the coast might choose the Hope Ranch ride, which runs through a stunning but quiet neighborhood There are no bike lanes, but there aren't many cars passing through here, either.

But the Cal Coast tours aren't just for casual tourists - they also have some more strenuous offerings. ''The loop we love to tell visitors aboutor take on a tour - is Mountain Drive in Montecito," Elyse sa id The winding road cuts through the middle of the mountains, with gorgeous v iews the entire time. If you're looking for a really challenging r ide, Gibraltar Road is your place. There's an epic climb up to Camino Cielo, which winds along the ridge on the Santa Ynez Mountains. "Pro athletes go up there to do elevation training," Elyse said.

Of course, a beach cr uiser won't cut it up there. But Cal Coast is stocked with super solid bikes that are wellmaintained - so much so that when the Santa Barbara 100 rolls into town, folks trust that Cal Coast's rentals will be just as good as their own personal bikes ( and perhaps even b et ter maintained).

If cruising is more your jam, you'll find those bikes well maintained, too (and at super affordable prices). Not surprisingly, though, electric and hybrid bikes are among the company's most popular rentals. Got the kids with you? Cal Coast has child seats, kid carts and tagalongs, a onewheeled bike with handlebars and pedals that attaches directly to an adult's bike. Bigger kid options start at 16" wheeled bikes. There are even a few tandem bikes as well.

If all that cycling's got you working up a sweat, head down to Cal Coast's stand on West Beach, near Stearns Wharf, to rent kayaks, SUPs, and surfboards. Tours and lessons on each are also available.

Cal Coast Adventures can be found at 736 Carpinteria St. in Santa Barbara. For more: (805) 628-2444 or calcoastadventures.com.

Cream of the Carp: A day in Carpinteria

Carpinteria may just be one of California’s best kept secrets. Join Kerstin Kuhn as she explores the best of one of our favorite little beach towns along the Central Coast.

If there’s one thing California is renowned for across the globe, it’s the iconic coastline and laid-back beach lifestyle. From the rugged beauty of the Northern Coast to the legendary surf breaks of Southern California, our Golden State is a treasure trove of seaside attractions with dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and enchanting little beach towns dotted along the way.

But not all places are made equal. While tourist hubs like Monterey, Big Sur, and Santa Barbara attract millions of visitors each year and bask in the glory of headlining tourist guides and travel magazines the world over, there are many hidden gems left just for the locals to enjoy. These small towns embody the quintessential California dream without the busloads of tourists.

A case in point is the quaint little beach town of Carpinteria. Located just a stone’s throw from its fancy neighbor, Montecito, it is often overlooked by travelers who speed right past it on the 101. But tucked between the sparkling Pacific Ocean and the imposing Santa Ynez Mountains, Carp (as the locals call it) is definitely worth a stop. Whether you’re looking to relax in the sun, go on outdoor adventures, or prefer to shop and indulge in a taste of the local food and drink scene, Carpinteria doesn’t just have something for everyone, it has a small-town charm that will instantly win you over.

Beach Bound

One of Carpinteria’s biggest draws is, of course, its collection of stunning beaches. And for such a small place, there is a surprising number of them, all located within five minutes from the center of town. The southernmost end located at the Santa Barbara and Ventura County line, features Rincon Point. Also known as the “Queen of the Coast,” this is one of the most famous surf spots in California, celebrated around the world for its consistent, well-formed waves and long rides. But even if you’re not into surfing, it’s a great beach to hang out, swim, and play in the sand; and watching the skilled surfers carve through the swells is certainly a mesmerizing sight.

While Rincon is renowned for its epic waves, arguably Carpinteria’s crown jewel among its beaches is the State Beach. This pristine, four-mile stretch of coastline is ideal for everything from

swimming to surf fishing, tidepool exploring, hiking, and camping. Indeed, the Carpinteria State Beach Park is one of the most fabulous camping spots in Southern California, with four campgrounds offering facilities for both tents and RVs. Although most of the campsites are located just a small distance away from the beach with shady spots underneath trees, there are plenty of sites directly on the sand, just steps from the ocean.

If nature is your jam, you’ll be in heaven here. Take a scenic hike along the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve bordering the beach and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains, ocean, and the nearby Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary. And for a totally extraordinary beach experience, head to the nearby Tar Pits Park, a small beach known for its natural asphalt seepage that creates tar pits along the shoreline. Explore the fascinating tar formations and learn about the area’s

geological history, all while frolicking on the beach.

Meanwhile, just a few miles north of Carpinteria along the Amtrak train tracks, you’ll find Padaro Beach, which most locals refer to as Santa Claus Beach A relatively uncrowded, wide stretch of beach, it’s not the easiest to get to as there’s no official parking lot, and you have to cross the train tracks to get onto the sand. But it’s totally worth the (minimal) effort for this is a truly picturesque beach that offers a secluded and serene experience. Capped by the mountains on the north and with panoramic views of the Channel Islands on the horizon, it features a wide expanse of soft, white sandy shores and mild waves, making it ideal for all sorts of oceanrelated activities, including swimming, paddle boarding, boogie boarding, and general beach fun.

After spending time on the beach, take a stroll down to the Padaro Beach Village on Santa Claus Lane, where you’ll find a charming selection of independent shops and restaurants. Get all your beach gear at the A-Frame Surf Shop; or peruse the gorgeous gifts and interior goods at Porch, a carefully curated home

and garden shop

“where shelter and nature converge.” Restaurants along the strip include Borrello’s Pizza & Pastaria, where local restaurateurs, Lucy and Michael Borrello, have served up authentic Italian dishes in a laidback, family-friendly location since 1975. There’s also Garden Market, a gourmet grocer and all-day café offering organic, farm-to-table ingredients and wines from around the Central Coast. And then there’s the wildly popular Padaro Beach Grill. With its park-like setting — think picnic tables surrounded by tropical palm trees — and a perfect oceanfront location, it’s the ideal spot for families, friends, and couples alike. The fun atmosphere, where kids can run around barefoot on a sprawling lawn and play in a sandbox full of toys, groups of friends can connect over a bottle of rosé or pints of craft beer, and couples can enjoy an intimate cocktail, you simply can’t go wrong here on a sunny day. The menu, too, has something for everyone. From fresh salads to yummy sandwiches, gourmet burgers, and seafood dishes like clam chowder, shrimp tacos, calamari, and fish and chips, this is eclectic California fare just as we like it. Try the

Linden Avenue

Back in the center of town is Carpinteria City Beach.

Famously known as the “World’s Safest Beach,” it has been ranked as the No. 1 swimming beach in California, thanks largely to its southern exposure and gradual incline. It’s a very popular beach not just because of its small surf and lack of riptides — as well as its extensive facilities, including picnic tables and barbecues, restrooms, volleyball nets, and even a beach shack — but also due to its location right at the end of Carp’s bustling Linden Avenue. Lined with mom-and-pop

shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, this sweet little high street offers a quintessential smalltown experience that is a far cry from the blocks of brand-name stores we’re so accustomed to seeing these days. Take your time as you go treasure hunting through the many antiques stores that are packed to the brim with knick-knacks, trinkets, and memorabilia from decades past. Connect with your inner child as you step inside an old-school candy store, Robitaille’s Fine Candies, that has been familyowned and operated for three generations. Or lose yourself at Murphy’s Vinyl Shack, a store heaving with thousands of vintage records, new vinyl, comic books, DVDs, and even a few cassette tapes. Owner Kevin Murphy is a fount of knowledge on all things music and always happy to chat and guide you through his vast collection. There’s also a cute little store called Bon Fortune that sells a selection of nostalgic, vintage party supplies. And for the ultimate pampering experience, step into SOAP, a boutique designed to wrap you in the finest

fabrics from 20 countries around the world.

If all that shopping is making you hungry, Linden Avenue has plenty of options to satisfy your appetite. For a casual affair, pick up a bunch of deliciously spicy tacos at Tacos Don Roge, or visit The Spot right by the beach for a relaxed throwback vibe and real American burgers. For a more elevated experience, head over to Little Dom’s Seafood (a spin-off of the original in Los Feliz), where upscale Italian fare with a heavy focus on seafood is paired with sinfully delicious cocktails. Or join husband-and-wife team Jessica and Kevin Clark for tapas and vino at their wine bar and bistro Corktree Cellars

If it’s too early in the day for you to indulge in a boozy drink and you’re in need of something caffeinated instead, be sure to visit Carp Moon Cafe. Located on the corner of Linden and Carpinteria Avenues, it’s a coffee shop run by local entrepreneur Laura Samperio. Choose from sweet treats like pastries and waffles, healthy smoothies and acai bowls, savory breakfast burritos, egg dishes, and sandwiches as well as an array of organic coffee beverages. And don’t miss out on Carp Moon Cafe’s signature café de olla, a traditional Mexican coffee drink brewed in an earthen clay pot with spices including cinnamon and star anise, raw sugar, and orange peel. It’s more than a drink, it’s a ritual that nourishes the body and soul.

Carpinteria Avenue

Next walk down the eastern stretch of Carpinteria Avenue, which runs

perpendicular to Linden Avenue and also hosts a bunch of foodie spots that you won’t want to miss. For breakfast, visit the Lucky Llama Coffee House, a quaint little spot with a sunny patio that serves up anything you might possibly crave in the morning. As you leave, look up the giant pine tree on the lawn next to the restaurant and you might just spot some blue herons in their nests up above. For a wholesome lunch, head to The Good Plough, a casual farm-to-table restaurant and grocer from husband-and-wife duo Katie and Jason Lesh of local produce box delivery company, Farm Cart Organics And for afternoon or early evening craft beers and burgers, you can’t go wrong at Rincon Brewery, the original outpost of the Carpinteria brew house which also has locations in Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Meanwhile, in the opposite direction at the western end of Carpinteria Avenue, lies Susan Willis Ltd., a delightful general store and gift shop that has been a community hub for three decades. Run by owner Susan Willis, the shop really embodies the spirit of Carpinteria. Inside the store you’ll find a “little of everything,” from soaps, candles and lotions to jewelry, clothes, decorations, treats, and anything that helps to make a house a home. What’s more, Willis also provides a free gift-wrapping service to her clients, making Susan Willis Ltd. the top spot for buying presents in Carpinteria.

If you’re looking to buy the gift of wine, be sure to visit the Carpinteria Wine Company, a straightforward, low-cost

wine shop with a select range of wines that are exceptional both in quality and affordability. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, it’s run by yet another husbandand-wife team, Jane and Frank Dambach. The key to success is their excellent customer service, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the shop and the staff’s deep knowledge of the wines along with each unique growing region.

Just a few blocks up, you’ll find one of Carp’s living legends: Clementine’s Steak House. Operated by chef-proprietor Lloyd McLenithan, whose late mother Irene first took over the restaurant in 1980 (it’s been in existence since 1970), this place is an institution if ever there was one. Step inside the restaurant and you feel as though you’re going to your grandma’s house, right down to the kind and unaffected service, the frilly curtains and lace doilies. Choose from regular or petite meals (all under $50) and prepare yourself for generous portions of classic American country fare: top-notch New York steak or prime rib on weekends, fresh grilled fish, and crispy fried chicken. Entrées come with homemade bread, soup, salad, fresh vegetables, and a choice of potato or rice as well as a huge slice of homemade pie that Lloyd bakes daily. Clementine’s is a

nod to a bygone era that was a lot simpler and more wholesome than today.

And that’s what defines Carpinteria: it’s a laid-back beach town that somehow seems to have been forgotten by the craziness of the modern world. It’s a place where you walk down the road and people smile at you, tell you secrets of where to go and what to look out for, where shops are family-owned and run, and you leave feeling taken care of. We think it’s quite alright that the guidebooks don’t shout about it.

CALIFORNIA AVOCADO FESTIVAL

Every fall, thousands of visitors descend on Carpinteria for the annual California Avocado Festival. Taking place on the first weekend of October, it is one of the largest free festivals in California, which honors the importance of the avocado industry to the local community. Apart from celebrating all things avocado (including the world’s largest vat of guacamole), there are booths and stalls all down Linden Avenue, including four stages with live music. This year the California Avocado Festival will be held from October 6 to 8. Find more at avofest.org.

Celebrate Labor Day with the Santa Barbara Studio Artists’ Open Studios Tour!

Labor Day weekend, Sept 1-4, 2023; opening reception at Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop

It’s one of the most celebrated art events on the California Coast: the annual Santa Barbara Studio Artists’ Open Studios Tour! Your $25 ticket (children under 12 free) is your admission to the opening night reception on Friday, Sept. 1, followed by a self-guided tour of scenic Santa Barbara County to visit the studios of 26 renowned artists—or as many of them as you can get to!—over the long Labor Day weekend.

The oldest and most prestigious event of its kind on the Central California Coast, each year the SBSA’s Open Studios Tour draws national and international collectors, decorators, and gallery owners for a weekend devoted to viewing and purchasing exceptional art. This year’s tour features 26 acclaimed artists, including Ann Shelton Beth (Landscape Paintings), Peggy Ferris (Abstract Art), Francine Kirsch (Sculpture), Marilyn McRae (Paper Art), Cathy Quiel (Watercolors), Susan Tibbles (Paintings & Assemblage), Gerry Winant (Landscape Paintings), and 19 more. Participating artists will display yellow flags and finding them becomes a veritable treasure hunt through the winding hills, palm-lined boulevards, and lively downtown

neighborhoods of Santa Barbara.

The opening night reception and tour preview is Friday, Sept. 1 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop, 631 Garden Street, where tour maps will also be available. Tour hours are from 11 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Monday. Tour tickets are also available online at www. santabarbarastudioartists.com.

Proceeds from the event this year will benefit Slingshot / Alpha Art Studio, a nonprofit progressive arts studio that supports the creative practice and professional interests of artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Santa Barbara County.

Historic Lobero Theatre Celebrates 150 Years

Originally founded in 1873, the Lobero Theatre is the oldest continuously operating theater in California, and the fourth oldest performing arts theater in the country. It’s known for helping to launch Hollywood legends, offering world-class jazz performances, and being the center for a robust program of regional performing arts. With its relatively small seat count, the Lobero affords audiences the chance to see top talent in a more personal, intimate venue.

Renowned for high quality programs presented in a welcoming intimate atmosphere, the Lobero has been the heart and rhythm of Santa Barbara for 150 years. The original José Lobero’s Opera House was rebuilt in 1924 in a Spanish Colonial Revival style designed by architects George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs. Registered as a state and city historical landmark, the Lobero is recognized as one of Santa Barbara’s architectural jewels. Today, the theater is managed by the Lobero Theatre Foundation, who works to maintain, improve, and operate this notable treasure as a performing arts theater and cultural asset to the community. The Lobero is Santa Barbara County’s first certified Green Theater and the first historic building to earn this designation.

TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME THIS SUMMER? BRING THE KIDS TO THE AIRFIELD. TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME THIS SUMMER? BRING THE KIDS TO THE AIRFIELD.

not here to camp this time. Instead, I’m heading out to watch my husband fly radio control airplanes at the mini airstrip located inside the park. The Ventura County Comets Radio Control Flying Club has been flying all sorts of RC airplanes at Lake Casitas since the 1960s. This is often a surprise to lake visitors — even those who have visited several times — as the air strip is located at the back of the recreation area, below the Osprey campground.

My husband got into this hobby after he could no longer surf due to a shoulder injury, and has been a member of the club for 10 years. He, like all the other Comets I spoke to, talks about how much he appreciates the camaraderie and the friendships he has made, and how much he has learned from the more veteran Ventura County Comets who share his passion for building and flying RC planes. I love going to the airfield and sitting under the shade of a majestic old pine tree, watching them fly with the backdrop of lake and verdant hills.

Big, colorful RC aircraft of all kinds take off and land from an actual, paved runway. There are gas-powered planes, but electric models are the most popular. Depending on the day, you can see RC World War II warbirds like Mustangs, Thunderbolts, Hellcats, and Bearcats. Sharing the runway are other fun planes like 3D aircraft (highly maneuverable

planes that perform advanced aerobatics) and even those equipped with FPV cameras (“first person view,” which gives a pilot’s view). There are simple starter planes, and ones so large they need to be disassembled to fit in a van. It’s truly a feast for the eyes. The banter is lively as I watch these guys fly and work on their planes, and they’re always happily helping each other troubleshoot any issue that may arise. The mood is jovial

and light as they laugh and rib each other.

I smile to myself because these gentlemen,

some of them a bit older, have not forgotten how to play!

Among these gentlemen are Alastair Brennan and George Boston, who have both been members for a long time. Alastair, who is currently the club secretary and is also in charge of publishing the newsletter, has been passionate about flying radio control aircraft since he was a kid. His eyes light up as he tells me that he started flying at the lake with the Comets back when he was 13 years old. He has been flying with these guys for over 40 years and has no intention of stopping, because, “There are just too many cool and amazing airplanes to build and fly.”

Alastair’s dad was an aeronautical engineer and was happy to support his son’s passion for building and flying RC planes. Instead of being dropped off at soccer practice like many kids, Alastair would get dropped off at the airfield where he’d spend the day building and flying planes with the old-timers who welcomed him with open arms and taught him all they knew.

One common thread, as you may have noticed, is that these guys really love to share their passion for this hobby. Most of them have had careers as engineers, or in data processing and information technology, or as car mechanics and the like — in other words, they love to use their brains and build things, just as much as they love to fly. “To love this hobby, you have to love building stuff,” every Comet I speak to tells me.

George, who is currently the liaison between the club and the lake management, has also had a lifelong love affair with RC aircraft, and was inspired as a young kid by a bunch of guys he saw at the park near his house. They flew control line planes at the time (also known as U-Control planes), which are attached to a wire that goes in a concentric circle with the plane, about 50 to 60 feet away from the pilot.

Photo by Ken Hanson A recent event at the air field. Several more events are planned for later this year. Photo by Logan Hall Ken Hanson works on his gas-powered Tiger Moth.

George tells me that the original Comets, some whom are still members today, started the club in the 1960s. “There were a bunch of guys that enjoyed getting together and flying model aircraft. At the time, the technology was still in its infancy stages and was just beginning to evolve to make flying radio control more practical.” Some of them were building their own transmitters, receivers, and servos.

The Ventura County Comets Radio Control Flying Club was first started in Ventura for a couple of years but then in 1965 or ’66, according to George, it was moved to Lake Casitas. George recalls that at the time, the lake was still being filled with water. The club found a spot, got permission from the lake, and got some heavy equipment to cut a dirt runway and create a staging area to work on the planes. And thus, the first airfield at Lake Casitas was born. They were there for about four years before the lake level rose and submerged their runway. They moved to another area of the lake and cut another runway, this time actually paving it. The club was there for about eight or nine years but once again, after a very wet winter, the water level rose and encroached on the runway, burying it beneath the water. So the air field of today is actually the third one, and my husband Dave reassured me that this one is above the spillway, so there is no danger of it being submerged by the lake again. It is an incredibly beautiful location with a paved runway, staging area, and shaded working stations, surrounded by the natural beauty of the lake.

Long before he became a regular at the airstrip, George remembers fishing on his boat at Lake Casitas and being mesmerized at the sight of the RC planes flying in the distance. Fascinated by their maneuverability and how well they could fly, he became a member in 2002 after retiring. The Comets warmly welcomed him into the club — like I said, that’s how these guys roll — and he has been actively involved with it ever since.

“There is a bright future ahead for the Ventura County Comets, and I’m happy to share that it is known as one of the best airfields in California in the model aviation world,”

George cheerfully tells me.

Any experienced RC pilot interested in flying at the airfield is welcome (just be sure to have either your AMA membership or proof of liability insurance on-hand).

Spectators are welcome to watch the planes, ask questions and even, if you’re so inclined, learn how to fly. The Ventura County Comets offer free RC flying lessons to people of all ages. Just click the Contact Us tab on their website and send an email to set up an appointment.

As Alastair says, “When I was 13, I went to the airfield one day and this old guy got up from where he was sitting

62 Summer 2023 california101guide.com

and let me fly his plane, and now I want to be that guy passing on the love.” My husband Dave, who is also an instructor pilot, feels the same way — it gives him great joy to share his passion for flying and teach people how to fly themselves.

“If you’re interested in taking your kids to do something that is not in front of a screen, come see us,” Dave says. And when you come for a lesson, he adds, don’t worry about crashing. The technology is such today that the instructor pilot can take over at any time, so you can just enjoy the experience of flying. Once you’re ready to purchase your own planes, you’ll have a club full of enthusiastic Comets ready to guide you in the right direction, from choosing the

right aircraft to making repairs and improvements.

You will find The Comets at the airfield on Tuesday, Thursday, and weekend mornings flying and dialing in their beautiful array of RC aircraft. But members can usually be found flying just about every other day of the week, as well. The airfield itself is open every day until sundown, when the park closes for the day. There are many events scheduled throughout the year, like Fun Flys and Warbird Days. This year, thanks to the replenished lake, there will be a Float Fly — which hasn’t happened in 10 years because of the drought — where specially-equipped planes take off and land on the lake itself. There is no charge (other than the Lake Casitas entry fee) to attend these events.

Upcoming VC Comets events are scheduled from 8 am to 1 pm with a barbeque and swap meet:

• July 22: Warbird Day

• September 22: Float Fly

• October 21: Quaker Day (as in the airplane)

For more information and to schedule a flying lesson, visit vccomets.com.

Summer Grillin’ Menu

Summertime and the grillin’s easy.

When I think about summer, I think about spending all day at the beach body surfing or firing up my grill on a beautiful day on California’s Central Coast. I remember Dad grilling two large Porterhouse steaks for the four of us. I remember because Dad couldn’t ordinarily afford good cuts of meat. He constantly grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for us, but rarely anything else.

Dad worked in the parts department of a San Francisco Ford dealership on Geary Boulevard. He worked with a guy who knew of a guy who had a cousin that sold Porterhouse steaks for next to nothing. Dad did a favor for this guy late one Friday afternoon in 1967. The following Friday, the guy brought two separately wrapped 30-ounce Porterhouse steaks to Dad as a thanks for helping him out. I remember asking where the guy got the steaks. Dad said, “You don’t want to know.”

On Saturday, Dad dusted off his round barbecue, built a pyramid of Kingsford charcoal briquettes in the bottom, squirted half a can of lighter fluid on top, and stood back to light them off with a loud whoomph. When the briquettes were mostly covered in ash, he spread them out, put the grill on, and carefully laid the steaks on the grill.

While Dad and his two boys were grillin’ and chillin’, Mom was making stovetop macaroni and cheese in the kitchen. Talk about good times! I would give anything to spend another summer afternoon with Dad and Mom savoring the sight, smell, and taste of Porterhouse steaks and Mom’s mac and cheese.

My menu for a fine summer backyard dining experience includes Porterhouses, Mom’s mac and cheese, grilled zucchini, grilled avocados, and a fresh mintylime fruit salad. I’ll let you decide what beverage to enjoy, but I recommend a Topa Topa Brewing Company Chief Peak IPA, if you like beer.

Grilled Porterhouse Steaks

When grilling steaks, the Porterhouse is my go-to steak. The Porterhouse is a New York strip and a delicate filet mignon separated by a T-shaped bone. It’s considered by many to be the undisputed ruler of the steakhouse. It’s expensive, but worth the price. Regarding flavor, Porterhouse steaks will taste milder in their beefiness than, say, a ribeye. But what they lack in flavor is made up for in texture. Since these muscles get minimal exercise, they grill up very tender. Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients:

4 Porterhouse steaks (1 to 1 ½ inches thick)

Extra-virgin olive oil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Fresh chopped thyme (optional)

Fresh chopped rosemary (optional)

Directions:

Preheat the grill to medium heat (about 375 degrees).

Brush both sides of each steak with oil and season liberally with salt and pepper. If desired, sprinkle with herbs and let

Mom’s Stovetop Mac and Cheese

Mom’s version of mac and cheese is a fine complement to the steaks. The grape tomatoes go nicely with the creamy mozzarella sauce and basil. Add a little Dijon mustard and a touch of paprika, and you have a mouth-watering, rib-sticking combination that is hard to beat.

Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons butter

4 tablespoons whole wheat flour

½ teaspoon Dijon mustard

¼ teaspoon paprika

rest at room temperature while the grill preheats.

Cover and grill the steaks until cooked to the desired doneness. I like mine medium rare and cook them for 6 minutes on the first side and 3 minutes on the second, although the timing will depend on the steak size and the precise temperature of your grill.

Transfer the steaks to a wire rack placed on a rimmed baking sheet and let them rest for at least 5 minutes before serving.

¼ teaspoon salt

Freshly ground black pepper to taste

1 cup milk

1 cup half-and-half

1¼ cups fresh mozzarella cheese (grated)

2 cups grape tomatoes (cut in half lengthwise)

½ cup fresh basil leaves (chopped)

5 to 6 ounces of uncooked penne pasta

Additional paprika for garnish (if desired)

Directions:

In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Stir in flour until smooth and bubbly. Let the roux cook for 2 to 3 minutes to ensure the whole wheat flour cooks thoroughly. Stir in mustard, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add milk and half and half, and whisk to incorporate. Continue whisking until the sauce begins to thicken. Add cheese and continue to stir until the cheese melts. Add grape tomatoes and basil. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Cook the pasta according to the package directions. Drain the pasta and fold into the sauce. Cover and simmer on medium-low heat for 10 to 12 minutes. To serve, transfer the bubbly mac and cheese to a family-style serving bowl and garnish with additional paprika.

Grilled Summer Zucchini

How about a side of grilled zucchini? You have tried every which way to use up the zucchini in your garden but still have some left that the neighbors won’t even take! It’s tasty, easy to make, and nutritious. Try it. You’ll be glad you did, and your neighbors will be grateful.

Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients

1 large zucchini (sliced into ½-inch rounds)

4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (crushed)

½ teaspoon lemon zest (chopped)

Salt and fresh ground black pepper (to taste)

¼ cup balsamic vinegar

Directions:

Preheat the grill to high heat (about 600 degrees).

Toss zucchini with olive oil, garlic powder, pepper flakes, and lemon zest in a large bowl — season with salt and pepper.

Using tongs, place zucchini on the grill. Cover and cook for 4 minutes. Carefully flip the zucchini rounds and continue cooking on high, covered, for 3 minutes more. Remove from the grill and place in a serving bowl. Add balsamic vinegar and carefully toss to coat. Serve warm.

Grilled Avocado Appetizers

Grilled avocados is a recipe that our son, Robert, created and shared with us. Think of it as a Caprese salad folded into a grilled avocado. Who’d a thunk it? It’s easy to prepare and is full of nutrition. It doesn’t hurt that it looks and tastes fantastic.

Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients:

1 clove garlic (minced)

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil plus more for the tomatoes

1 tablespoon freshly-squeezed lime juice

2 large ripe avocados

Salt and fresh ground black pepper

18 grape or mini-heirloom tomatoes

12 Ciliegine Whole Milk Fresh Mozzarella balls

1 serrano pepper (stemmed, seeded, and thinly sliced)

2 tablespoons basil (chopped)

Directions:

Heat the grill to medium-high heat (about 400 degrees).

Place garlic in a medium-sized bowl. Add oil and lime juice, and whisk together. Cut the avocados in half (lengthwise) and remove the pits. Brush some of the oil mixture onto each avocado half. Reserve the balance of the oil mixture. Season the avocados liberally with salt and pepper.

Skewer the tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt.

Place the avocados on the grill, cut side down. Add the tomatoes

alongside. Grill for 4 to 5 minutes in total, turning the tomatoes once. The avocados should be nicely marked, and the skin on the tomatoes should be blistered. Remove everything from the grill.

Un-skewer the tomatoes and cut each in half. Add the tomatoes and the mozzarella balls to the reserved oil mixture. Fold in the sliced serrano pepper and the basil. Spoon some of this mixture into each avocado half and finish with a little extra salt, if desired. Serve warm.

Minty-Lime Fruit Salad

This fruit salad will delight your taste buds. It brings a fantastic combination of flavors and textures to the table and is perfect for a summer lunch or a side salad for a grilled dinner.

Makes 4 generous servings.

Dressing Ingredients:

2 teaspoons lime zest

2 tablespoons lime juice

2 tablespoons orange juice

2 tablespoons agave syrup

2 tablespoons fresh mint (minced)

Salad Ingredients:

1½ cups strawberries (sliced)

1 cup mango (peeled and diced)

1 cup kiwi (peeled and diced)

2 cups seedless grapes (cut in half)

1 cup blueberries

Dressing Directions:

Whisk together all the dressing ingredients in a small jar or bowl. Stir until well combined.

Salad Directions:

In a large bowl, combine all of the fruit ingredients. Stir to combine. Drizzle with mint dressing and stir to coat. Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Tip: The dressing can be made ahead of time (several hours or up to one day) and stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

S ANTA B ARBARA : A S AILOR ’ S P ARADISE

There are few better places to get out and enjoy the Pacific like the Santa Barbara Channel. With stunning vistas of the Santa Ynez Mountains on one side and the Channel Islands on the other, its beauty is hard to beat. According to Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, it’s among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet and boasts a huge variety of species — from the tiniest plankton to the migrating blue whale, the largest animal in existence.

And what better way to experience all this than from a sailboat? Whether you are an experienced sailor, a beginner looking to take lessons, or you just want to cruise the Channel in style, look no further than the Santa Barbara Sailing Center.

88 Summer 2023 california101guide.com
Photo by Kevin Steele Kids can learn to sail, too, with SBSC.

Since 1967, the SBSC has offered guests a number of ways to get out on the water. For those looking to learn to sail, lessons are available in many forms for individuals of all experience levels. From June to August, aspiring sailors ages 7 to 15 will find some of the most fun, instructional, and unique summer camps in the Santa Barbara area. For adults, SBSC offers one of the largest American Sailing Association (ASA) schools in the nation. A few of the many course offerings include basic keelboat sailing (for beginners), basic coastal cruising, bareboat sailing,

coastal navigation, and advanced coastal cruising for more experienced sailors.

In addition to sailing lessons, the Santa Barbara Sailing Center also offers a wide variety of private charters including Channel Islands getaways, weddings at sea, memorials at sea, corporate events, and dining at sea. These charters — for groups of six up to 145 — come with a variety of different options, including catering, a bar, and even entertainment. Looking for a longer

getaway? Spend up to a week at sea onboard a 42-foot Catalina with four cabins or a 50-foot with five cabins along with, of course, a USCG captain for your enjoyment and safety. Licensed and qualified sailors who don’t need a captain can choose from several boats ranging from 27 to 50 feet. Small boat rentals are also an option for guests with a bit less sailing experience (a small boat sailing quiz is required, however, before setting off on your Santa Barbara Channel adventures).

Not quite ready to man a sailboat? SBSC has you covered, too, with kayak and stand-up paddle board rentals. Guided tours are available for those guests who would rather take to the water under the watchful eye of a professional (and knowledgeable) guide.

Dip your toe into the Channel (metaphorically) on one of SBSC’s popular public trips, such as sunset cruises, whale watching, Sipping on the Sea, or Music on the Water. Sipping on the Sea includes local wine or beer tastings at sunset aboard the Double Dolphin Catamaran. Look for these trips every third Thursday of the month, May through October.

A representative from the winery or brewery will be on board to pour and offer tasting notes, while the captain provides details on the Channel and the coastline. This is a surefire way to impress your outof-town guests (or a date!). And although the season has passed, plan ahead for next spring and SBSC’s most popular cruise: whale watching. They offer cruises twice daily, which typically run from mid-February through mid-May and are hosted on the Double Dolphin. You’ll see a wide variety of

The Santa Barbara Harbor offers seven dining options, including the Anchor Rose Restaurant and Lounge, Brophy Bros., Shoreline Beach Café, Breakwater Restaurant, On The Alley, Sushi Go Go, and the Harbor Market & Deli.

Visitors come from far and wide to enjoy sailing and the Santa Barbara Harbor, including Scott Phelps and his family, who have been visiting the area for more than 30 years. “My parents brought me as a kid and now I bring my family at least twice a year. We are avid boaters and feel a connection to the Santa Barbara Channel and the city itself,” he said. “The views from the water, looking

back at the Santa Barbara landscape are some of the best in the world. Truly, we’ve been on the water all over the world and this is one of our very favorite places to visit.”

Phelps proudly shared that his kids learned to sail under the guidance of the Santa Barbara Sailing Center. “We started both of my kids early and they learned things like water safety and navigation here. The instructors were great, and my kids have maintained a love for the sport of sailing well into adulthood,” he added.

THE PIERS of the Central Coast

If you visit a beach on the Central Coast this summer, you may find yourself strolling out over the water on a wooden pier. Today, these structures are popular tourist destinations, but most were built for a very different reason. Back in the 1800s — long before Highway 101 was built — ships were the main suppliers of goods to this quickly-growing region. Piers allowed ships to offload their passengers and cargo much faster (and safer) than using the small barges of the past. These piers quite literally helped build the cities they belonged to.

Once the railways and highways were built, the piers weren’t needed like before. Several of them fell into disrepair and were removed, but some were repurposed and have become beloved recreational features in their beach communities.

VENTURA COUNTY

The iconic Ventura Pier juts out 1,600 feet from the San Buenaventura State Beach. Built in 1872, it is the oldest pier in California, but hasn’t been used for shipping since the 1940s. At the base of the pier are Beach House Tacos, Eric Ericsson’s Fish Co. and the MadeWest Brewing Company taproom. Ericsson’s is a popular local seafood restaurant and MadeWest is a great Ventura-based beer company. But I always end up at Beach House Tacos. The menu includes incredible tacos and burritos and are known for the seafood choices like ahi and calamari tacos. My go-to order is the beach house burrito, which is stuffed full of grilled pasilla chile, cheese, rice, black beans, avocado, tomato, lettuce, and chipotle cream.

The Ventura Pier can appear separated from downtown Ventura by Highway 101, but just head toward the water on California Street and you’ll find your way to the beach.

Where California Street meets the sand is a pedestrian promenade, the Crown Plaza Ventura Beach hotel, a pair of restaurants (Moofish Café and Aloha Steakhouse), and a city parking structure. There is also Wheel Fun Rentals where you can rent bikes or four person surreys to pedal along the beach path. So, after an afternoon spent in downtown Ventura, walk a few minutes to the pier, order some tacos and walk out to the end to watch the sunset. On a clear day you can see the entire arc of the coast — from Hollywood Beach in Oxnard to Santa Barbara — with the Channel Islands out in front.

Further down the Ventura County coastline is the lesser-known fishing pier at Port Hueneme Beach Park, which stretches out into the Pacific for a quarter mile. Forget all the historic background at the start of the article; this one is relatively new. There are no structures or services on the pier, but there is a great casual seafood restaurant, Surfside Seafood, on the beach nearby. At the end there are several benches. On a clear day you can see the Channel Islands in one direction and the Santa Monica Mountains in the other.

This winter’s storms damaged portions of the Ventura Pier, resulting in its temporary closure. There is no reopening date set, but estimates range from late fall to early 2024. The restaurants, however, remain open.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

What’s the difference between a pier and a wharf? Technically, a pier sticks out straight from the shore, and a wharf goes along the shore. Stearns Wharf is like an extension of State Street after it meets Cabrillo Boulevard at the ocean in Santa Barbara. It starts out like a pier, heading straight out from the beach, but then curves and by the end is almost parallel with the shore.

For several decades after it opened in the 1870s, Stearns Wharf was where passenger and freight ships from Los Angeles or San Francisco would arrive. When a restaurant was built on it in the 1940s, it shifted from being used for transportation to dining and recreation. Over the years, it’s been battered by storms and fires alike but has always been restored and remains one of Santa Barbara’s most popular attractions.

Unlike most of the other piers, you can actually drive out on Stearns Wharf, though parking is limited. The best way to experience it is to stroll off the beach and out over the water. Of all the piers on the coast, it contains the most amenities and could entertain you for an entire afternoon. There are several excellent restaurants, an ice cream

shop, a bait and tackle shop, and gift shops, all with fabulous views. Close to shore, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center is a great little aquarium featuring regional marine life. Its many interactive exhibits make it a neat place to explore, no matter your age. Another of our favorite places to visit (for the 21-and-up crowd) is the Deep Sea Tasting Room, where you can enjoy Conway Family Wines from the deck that looks out along Santa Barbara’s beach. If you’re feeling the need to get out onto the water, Celebration Cruises of Santa Barbara offers a variety of ocean cruises year-round. For a shorter ride (and a quick way to get over to the Harbor), hop on the Santa Barbara Water Taxi’s famous Lil’ Toot boat. For both, you can buy tickets and board right on the pier.

Further west up the coast near the Santa Barbara Airport, a fishing pier sticks out from Goleta Beach Park. Goleta once had a shipping pier in the 1800s that was used to send farm produce down the coast, but that has long since gone. The existing one was built in the 1940s when the area was a U.S. air base, but it was given to the county a few years later. This one is very popular with fishermen, although all public piers in California tend to have at least a few poles in the water. It’s also a beautiful spot, more serene than Stearns Wharf, with the Santa Ynez Mountains looming up from the north, and the Channel Islands visible on the horizon. The County Park is a wonderful place for a family picnic or just to relax by the ocean. There used to be a café right at the base of the pier, but it closed in 2021. The county is working to bring in a new restaurant later this year.

102 Summer 2023 california101guide.com
Swim in for a tasting at Deep Sea Wine, on Stearns Wharf. Visit the Sea Center to learn about life under the pier, and all along the Central Coast. There are no bad views from Stearns Wharf.

At Gaviota State Beach, about 25 miles west of Goleta, there is another fishing pier also built in the 1940s, but it was damaged in a storm in 2014 and has been closed to the public ever since. Technically, there is one more public pier in Santa Barbara County: at Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island, which is where visitors to the Channel Islands National Park arrive.

San Luis Obispo County

The focal point of Pismo Beach is the plaza with the seven-foot tall colorful letters spelling out the name of the city. Behind it, the pier sticks out for 1,200 feet into the surf. There was a historic and much longer pier at the location, but it was destroyed by storms decades ago. The current

pier was built in the 1980s and features four diamond-shaped bump-outs spaced along the pier. Three classic Airstream trailers are parked on the pier in the first two diamonds. One is Sunsets at Pismo, a beach food and beer restaurant, with tables and chairs on the pier and food served from the Airstream. The second one contains a visitor center, and the third is Sheldon’s Bait Shack. While fishing is definitely popular and encouraged from the pier, it is also very popular with folks just enjoying the ocean air. On either side of the pier is a path that connects hotels, restaurants, and shops along the beachfront. Restaurants in Pismo are known for their chowder, shrimp tacos, barbecue, and the not-to-bemissed Old West Cinnamon Rolls.

About 10 minutes north is the town of Avila Beach, which has three piers right in a row. Harford Pier was built in the late 1800s to help with shipping to San Luis Obispo. It’s the only pier in the area other than Stearns Wharf that you can drive on, and it’s more of a working pier than a recreational one. There is a seafood restaurant, Mersea’s, with a deck that looks across the bay. Patriot Sportfishing offers ocean fishing, whale watching, and private boat charters.

Next to the Harford Pier is the private Cal Poly Pier, which was built in the 1980s for the oil industry but is now operated by Cal Poly University for marine research. Unfortunately, it isn’t open to the public. The third pier is Avila Pier, which

stretches out from downtown. Originally built in 1908, the pier suffered damage from several storms, and in 2015 when humpback whales appeared in the bay, the effect of large crowds on the pier led to a realization that it wasn’t structurally sound anymore. It has been closed for restoration since. It is still an eye-catching part of the view from the Front Street promenade which features restaurants, stores, a farmers’ market, and cafes like my favorite, Kraken Coffee Company

Start the day right with a Kraken Coffee and stroll along the beach in Avila.

After Avila, there isn’t another pier on the coast until Cayucos. In 1875

Captain James Cass built the Cayucos Pier so the Pacific Steamship Company would stop at his town. The current pier is a replacement, and even it has suffered from storm damage, being renovated most recently in 2015. It’s a perfect spot to watch the surfers, look for dolphins, and admire Morro Rock in the distance. Not only is the Cayucos Pier fantastic in itself, but it connects right to the downtown area with so many super places to dine, stay, and shop. Favorites of mine are the amazing breakfast tacos at The Hidden Kitchen, the sausages at Cayucos Sausage Co. or the cookies from Brown Butter Cookie Company (see Cruising Cayucos in the summer 2022 issue).

At the northern end of the county is the William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach Pier, more commonly referred to as the San Simeon Pier, at the Hearst State Beach. A few miles north of Cambria and just before you get to the elephant seal

sanctuary by Piedras Blancas Light Station, the pier juts out into San Simeon cove across Route 1 from the entrance to Hearst Castle. The original pier, built in the mid-1800s by the Hearst family, was a shipping stop for the area — it’s how Willam Randolph Hearst brought in building materials, art, and furniture for the Castle. The original pier stopped being used after 1916, and the county built the new one in 1957. I have found this to be a peaceful spot to stop for a reflective moment during a road trip. The coastline in either direction is dramatic and undeveloped, and the cove is part of a National Marine Sanctuary. If you are lucky, you might see a group of dolphins or even whales passing by.

Piers are a special part of our region. They have largely lost their original historic purpose, and are constantly under threat from ocean storms. Yet there is something special about walking out along the wood planks; about being out among the surf without being in the water; and about looking back at the land and taking in the expanse of the beautiful California coast.

The Transformation of State Street

Santa Barbara’s downtown area was radically changed during the pandemic. Plans are now in the works to keep it that way.

114 Summer 2023 california101guide.com
Palm trees and picture-perfect sunsets are staples of State Street.

It’s difficult to imagine anything positive could have resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic, but something has happened in Santa Barbara that could be classified as such — the transformation of State Street from being congested with cars to being a kind of community open space.

State Street has been the spine of Santa Barbara for more than 150 years. It was the first paved road in Santa Barbara, and runs from the beach at historic Stearns Wharf up through the center of the city. The 10 or so blocks north of Highway 101 are considered Downtown Santa Barbara. It grew fast after the California gold rush, the coming of the railroad, and the early movie industry. But then the massive 1925 earthquake hit, and most of downtown was destroyed. After that, the city created new guidelines for rebuilding that required the Spanish mission style you see now in the buildings along State Street. The difference is really obvious with one of the few buildings that didn’t come crashing down during the 1925 earthquake: the Granada Theatre. It sticks out with its

height and style amid the lower white plaster and red roof-tile buildings all around it.

State Street has continued to change every few decades. In 1964, the city called for narrowing State Street to two lanes from four and creating parking lots and garages in the blocks off the street to give more space for sidewalks and trees. To make the new parking concept work, paseos were created, with attractive courtyards and retail nooks that you can still see today. It was also suggested at that time that a few blocks be closed to cars, but this was ignored — at least, for a while.

In the 1980s, the two blocks between Ortega Street and Canon Perdido Street on the west side of the street were transformed into the Paseo Nuevo, an innovative (at the time) open air shopping mall which elevated the retail experience along State Street. But the changes in how we shop and the effect of the pandemic has caused problems. Its future is up in the air with the two anchor stores — once a Macys and

a Nordstrom — both gone. There is talk of office space and housing.

During the height of the pandemic, the State of California put restrictions on indoor dining. Since restaurants needed more outdoor space to accommodate enough seats to keep the restaurants going, the City of Santa Barbara temporarily closed State Street to vehicle traffic from Haley Street to Victoria Street, and allowed restaurants to create seating areas in what had been the road.

This eight-block stretch is less than a mile long, but contains an incredible array of activity: historic sites, art galleries and museums, theaters and cinemas, restaurants, pubs and wineries, hotels, and shopping of all types. It’s a place I love to spend the afternoon on a day trip or make a base for a weekend getaway.

“I think that the atmosphere nowadays is much more inviting, and it really feels like a community gathering place,” said Tim Persson, of the Downtown Organization of Santa Barbara.

116 Summer 2023 california101guide.com
Looking west on State Street, in the Historic Theatre District. Grassini’s Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent summer wine. An Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir.

“The limit on car traffic has obviously made it a more pedestrian-friendly place, making it a lot easier to stroll down the street, window shop, and enjoy al fresco dining.”

The first couple of blocks north of California 101 are known as Lower State, though the city has labeled this area as the Entertainment District. It is busy with casual eateries like The Habit Burger Grill and Joe’s Cafe, which is the oldest restaurant in Santa Barbara. It also has trendy shops like Urban Outfitters, Starbucks, and Vans. At night it gets lively, with bars like O’Malley’s and The Red Piano, which feature live music, and British-themed pubs like Old Kings Road and The Press Room. The breweries here are innovative: Night Lizard Brewing Company names its beers after endangered species from the Central Coast, like its Gnatcatcher IPA, and Institution Ale Co. has won awards for its European-style lagers.

The middle blocks of State are dominated on the west side by the Paseo Nuevo, which features a number of great eateries like the Pickles & Swiss sandwich shop and Eureka!, but my favorite spot in this area is on the opposite side of the street. The El Paseo is a passageway that opens onto courtyards and connects State Street to Anacapa Street. Along it are Grassini Family Vineyards and Au Bon Climat wines, among other wineries. It provides a relaxing oasis to enjoy some of the best of wine

country right off State Street. It is also the location of Casa de La Guerra, the 200-yearold house of the Spanish colonial commander. It was renovated in the 1990s and is now a museum for local history.

The northern blocks feature a number of cultural destinations. There is the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Granada Theatre, The Arlington Theatre and the New Vic Theatre, which together show off the lively arts scene in Santa Barbara. To be honest, I’m more into the lively coffee scene, which includes Dune Coffee Roasters, a cool café at the corner of State and Figueroa Streets, and Cajé Coffee Roasters at State Street and Arlington, which has taken coffee to a whole new level. These are no ordinary coffee drinks. I tried a latte with bourbon pecan syrup and activated charcoal that was garnished with ginger salt, candied ginger, and a blackberry. It’s like elevated cocktails, but for coffee.

At the Kimpton Hotel on Cabrillo Street is Finch & Fork, which has one of the best brunches in Santa Barbara. And on Victoria Street next to the New Vic Theatre is Scarlett Begonia, which is famous for their pancakes. Just south of the art museum is Mizza, which I found to be a great place to sit outside and have artisanal pizza and other amazing dishes like prosciutto, burrata, and peaches. Mizza sits right at the entrance to La Arcada Plaza, which is a charming courtyard from the 1920s. There are whimsical statues of people and dolphins, a fountain with turtles, and several stores and eateries. But my favorite place to eat in Santa

Coffee artistry from Cajé. The bar at Cajé is as dynamic as its drinks. The Cajé patio.

Barbara is Milk & Honey Tapas on Anapamu Street, just off State. The menu is primarily small bites, like the delicious baconwrapped dates, amazing street corn, and the best sliders I have ever had. Milk & Honey also has great cocktails, but after dinner I recommend a walk to The Good Lion, which is in the corner of the Granada Theatre building. In the past, I had felt that the busy traffic on State Street divided one side from the other and busy activity crowded

the sidewalks, even though they were already wide by most city standards. Sure, you could always cross at the intersections, but the two sides didn’t feel connected. And when I had a destination in mind like Grassini Wines or Eureka!, I would aim to arrive from cross streets to avoid the congestion. But when State Street was closed to vehicle traffic, the space seemed to breathe. Casually walking across mid-block from, say, Dune to Mizza felt natural and didn’t involve dodging cars. Because the city has provided plenty of parking behind the blocks and because the residential neighborhoods and hotels are close by, the closure didn’t keep people away. So I began to notice more social activity — visiting families

walking together, locals strolling with their dogs, friend groups hanging out on the temporary street furniture the city had installed. What had been State Street became a kind of public open space and it didn’t feel as compressed as when all the pedestrians had to fit on the sidewalk. My sense is that restaurants have benefitted from it, as well. Santa Barbara is blessed with the best of California weather, and there is nothing like sitting outside for dinner on a mild evening.

“The majority of businesses are positive about the changes to State Street,” said Persson. “Many of them have reported increased sales and foot traffic since the limit on car traffic was implemented. The outdoor seating areas has led to a more vibrant and livelier feel, so it has been a positive for both restaurants and the neighboring merchants.”

The pandemic is thankfully over, yet the city has kept these

blocks of State Street closed to vehicles, and is moving forward with a plan to make permanent changes in the design and feel. The city has created a task force and is holding community meetings on a plan called Create State. They hope to reveal the plan for what to do with the area

by the end of the year. There are different concepts being proposed, some that allow some car movement, some that include a bike path, and others that are more limited. The community response so far has been overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the restriction on cars. Whatever the city ultimately decides, State Street is an incredible place to visit, and I’m excited to see it become even better in the future.

Established in 2011, Rabalais’ Bistro was founded as a tribute to my grandmother, Anesia Lois Rabalais. She relied on the resourceful roots of her Cajun upbringing to feed her family of eight. Our menu is inspired by the simple, honest comfort foods her and her family shared together.

Our goal is to bring people and culture together over great food, drinks, and comfortable atmosphere. We seek to be a gathering place rooted in traditional Southern values bringing together friends, family, and community.

We serve the Cajun classics for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, made from scratch, the old fashioned way. We make all of our baked goods here in house, from the french bread, to cakes, to cookies. We serve Prospect Coffee Roasters coffee in a specialty setting, plus some New Orleans inspired chicory drinks.

Come and see why we are one of the highest rated restaurants, bakery, and coffee shops in Santa Paula and Ventura County.

Summertime Drinks: Whites and Pinks

Exploring the Central Coast’s best summer wines

Photo by Heather Daenitz Margerum’s M5 and Riviera Rosé pair perfectly with Santa Barbara’s sun-soaked shores.

After a rather overcast spring along the Central Coast, we’re ready for a sun-drenched summer! Lounging by the pool, backyard grilling, picnicking, concert-going — this calls for whites and pinks. Wines, that is.

Central Coast winemakers offer up an amazing selection of these wines to fit every taste and budget. Plan a road trip to visit some of the creative boutique winemakers from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles, and points in between. Sip elegant, fun whites and rosés for your summertime pleasure, then take some home. There are hundreds of wineries and tasting rooms awaiting your exploration along the Central Coast, on or conveniently close to California’s Highway 101. Below is a small sample of what lies ahead, but no matter where you go, your palate is sure to discover exciting new libations.

Start in Santa Barbara and work your way north as we blaze a trail through the Central Coast to find those super sippable summery drinks (whites and pinks!).

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

Margerum Winery Tasting Room, in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone, may be your first stop. Explore award-winning wines from iconic winemaker Doug Margerum. Single varietals include Sauvignon Blanc, Roussanne, Riesling, and Viognier. Then try some blends, like M5 — a Rhône blend consisting of five different grapes — and Trois Blondes, a three-varietal

blend. And let’s not forget their delicate Rosé, a perfect summertime sipper.

Margerum is just one of a dozen tasting rooms along the The Funk Zone, so take your time and explore!

Next, head north up to Lompoc, and visit Camins 2 Dreams. Here you will meet a superstar winemaking couple, Tara Gomez and her wife Mireia Taribo. Mireia, Spanish-born and raised, and Tara, a member of the Central Coast Chumash tribe, are quite the dynamic duo with an incredible story in their winemaking journey. Growing in popularity, but not widely available, you can’t help but love their Grüner Veltliner, a Spanish varietal that is becoming more popular. We also love their Albariño (another Spanish grape), and their Rosé in a can, perfect for that summertime picnic in the park or outdoor concert!

Time permitting, pop into a few of the other tasting rooms in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto and sip away.

Leaving Lompoc, drive east on Highway 246 to the 101, then head north to the wine town of Los Olivos. This puts you in the midst of the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Los Olivos alone has about 30 tasting rooms and is a great place to explore. You’ll want to visit Larry Schaffer at Tercero Wines. “Unique

and lesser-known varietals” is Larry’s tagline, but you will find a great variety of whites and rosés here, too, including single varietals such as Clairette Blanche, Malvasia Bianca, Roussanne, Marsanne, some very enticing blends, and of course pinks! Don’t forget to make time for the town’s many other tasting rooms.

THE SLO COAST

Getting back on the 101, head north and connect to Highway 1 to explore the SLOCOAST AVA (San Luis Obispo), which

includes Edna Valley. This new AVA is home to dozens of wonderful wineries. Given the influence of the coastal weather and terroir, you will encounter appealing whites just about anywhere you go.

Here are just a few you may want to seek out, while perhaps stopping at other wineries along the road. Talley Vineyards, in Edna Valley, boasts a history dating back to 1948. Their wines have been served at the White House, and in 2021, Talley was named one of the top 100 wineries in the world by Wine and Spirits Magazine. In addition to a beautiful

selection of Chardonnays, you may enjoy a Grüner Veltliner and an elegant (first release) Rosé of Grenache. Adding to the experience is the view from their beautiful tasting room.

As you leisurely meander your way back to the coast, leave time to stop at some of the other wineries. Returning to the 101, head north. In picturesque Morro Bay, visit Absolution Cellars to sample Dirk Neumann’s summer wines, including Trebbiano, Clairette Blanche, and his Rosé of Angelico. You won’t be disappointed.

Continue along the coast towards Cambria. Just a little way inland, you’ll want to visit Stolo Family Vineyards. In addition to their Sauvignon Blanc, enjoy trying their Gewürztraminer, plus coastal climate Chardonnays and pinks.

From Cambria, take the scenic drive over Highway 46, reconnecting to the 101 and Paso Robles.

PASO ROBLES

While in his mid-20s, Anthony Yount was already on the path to becoming a winemaker of distinction when he introduced his label, Kinero Cellars. The focus was a selection of whites (and pink, of course). Anthony’s wines are complex, intriguing, and very sippable! He is a trailblazer, being perhaps the first Paso winemaker to introduce a line of all white wines (in 2008). If you can snag a bottle or two, you won’t be disappointed; his whites and pinks are summertime favorites!

Making wine isn’t rocket science, is it? Dave McGee of Monochrome Wines uses all the scientific and deductive skills he developed over the years — many spent in the aerospace industry — to create a superb, award-winning line of all white wines. His goal was to establish a selection of whites that would stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of reds. Now in his seventh vintage, Dave consistently receives accolades with scores in the high 90s from the industry’s most respected magazines. Recently, his Sense of Out of Place (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay) was featured in Forbes Magazine. Sip, taste, and take home some of Dave’s eclectic, exciting blends.

Nancy Ulloa started Ulloa Cellars with a dream and a passion. Having recently released her fourth vintage, Ulloa is another select, small-production winery specializing in white wines. With such interesting grapes that include Verdejo, Sèmillon, and Grüner Veltliner, Nancy’s wines are in a category by themselves. Nancy was the first Latina winemaker

with her own brand in Paso Robles. Don’t miss a chance to sip and explore these wines with Nancy.

From Santa Barbara to Paso Robles and points in between, you will discover exciting whites and Rosés featuring grapes originating from Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and other areas. Prepare to discover unique wine regions, marveling at grapes you may not be familiar with while enhancing your summertime gatherings with beautiful, eclectic, whites and pinks.

Cheers!
