Editor’s Note
Baby, it’s cold outside. Or, well, kinda. Around these parts, “cold” is a relative term. While the rest of the country shovels out their driveways, we’re zipping up our Patagonias when the daytime highs drop below 60 (which doesn’t happen all that often).
The snowbirds might call us wimps. But just because we’re accustomed to almost-idyllic weather doesn’t mean we’re hunkering down inside for the next few months!
CA 101 Head up to Ojai with writer Nicole Leonetti (PAGE 58). This small mountain town will surprise you with just how much there is to do here! Explore the mountains, the food, and the myriad activities in the Valley of the Moon.
CA 101 Ready to shrug off the typical New Year’s resolution diet? Check out the goodies in Don Sonderling’s Sweet Eats article (PAGE 26). As they say, “treat yourself!” Don explores some seriously incredible desserts across all three counties (and a little beyond).Gelato, Turkish delight, cookies, truffles, oh my!
CA 101 While we’re on the subject of indulgence, why not dive into some worldclass dive bars (PAGE 89)? Zach Rosen takes us through some of Santa Barbara
County’s most beloved (and historic, and quirky) no-frills joints.
CA 101 For those who prefer a higher-brow alcoholic experience, head up to Paso Robles. This region has a fabulous lineup of Cabernet Sauvignons (PAGE 10). Writer Don Sonderling takes us through some of his favorite cabs — and gives a historical perspective on how these winemakers put Paso on the map.
CA 101 Work off some of those calories at the Simi Hills Golf Course (PAGE 84). Designed by renowned golf architect Ted Robinson, this beautiful course in eastern Ventura County has great views, fast greens, and reasonable fees.
CA 101 For the non-athletes, you can still get your steps in at Miss Daisy’s (PAGE 42). It’s easy to get lost in this absolutely massive consignment and auction house in Santa Barbara. Roam the aisles for, well, just about anything and everything you can possibly imagine. Costume jewelry, rare prints, player pianos, first-edition books, colorful rugs, funky teapots, antique knickknacks — well, you get the picture!

While you’re enjoying the Central Coast, stop by The Central Coast’s Premier Yarn Shop, located in the historic town of Old Orcutt, to see our newly expanded shop full of premium knitting and crochet supplies. We have beautiful yarn, needles and hooks, books, and much more to make your project a joy to work on. You can even join us for one of our weekly meet-ups and make new friends while you work on a project.
Maybe you will even nd a skein or two of souvenir yarn to take home to remind you of your visit - and we are always happy to wind it for you so you can start on a project right away if you’d like. You can nd us online at oldorcuttyarnery.com (we ship!) and on IG and FB too as @oldorcuttyarnery.

Cab Country Exploring cabernet sauvignon in Paso Robles
By Don Sonderling
PASO ROBLES IS P
A cabernet sauvignon lover’s paradise. The terroir is unique, and the people, wines, and attitude are creative and exciting. Here, you are sure to find a cabernet sauvignon to excite your palate.
Paso Robles Cab Country:
A brief history
Gary Eberle, of Eberle Winery, came to California to make elegant, world-class cabernet sauvignon. Largely thanks to his mentor, Robert Mondavi, Gary chose the Central Coast town of Paso Robles back in the ‘70s to grow his grapes and make wine. Today, Gary is known as “The Godfather of Paso Robles” because he was the trendsetter in establishing what is now recognized as a world-class wine destination. He was among the trailblazers who saw it for its potential to produce some of the best cabernet sauvignon you will find anywhere in California.
But before Gary and Mondavi was Stanley Hoffman. Stanley was a groundbreaking pioneer in winemaking on the Central Coast, being the first to plant Bordeaux varietals in the area following the repeal of Prohibition. Hoffman was also the first winemaker in the area to hire André Tchelistcheff as a consultant. Tchelistcheff is noted for his contributions toward defining the style of California’s best wines, especially cabernet sauvignon. As a result, cabernet sauvignon found a home in the Central Coast and Paso Robles.
“Location, location, location” is the old saying in real estate, and Paso Robles’s location for grape growing is amazing. Eleven sub-
AVAs designate very different types of terroir, weather, and microclimates, with rolling hills, flats, valleys, gulleys, and altitude. It can be argued, though, that the secret ingredient is Paso Robles’s winemaking attitude. It’s the Wild West; it’s cowboys and outlaws (Jesse James and his gang used to hide out here at his uncle’s ranch); it’s pushing the limits and not being tied down to a specific set of guidelines.
The Paso Robles AVA is quite special and conducive to growing many different types of grapes. Geologist Ben Schupack describes the area as follows: “The diverse varietals of Paso Robles are not just a product of the deep diurnal temperature pendulum swings but also the deep geologic history of tectonic collisions. The ancient Miocene ocean floor and river deposits contribute to the prolific Paso Robles terroir.”
Paso Robles and Central Coast cabernet reflect the American spirit of experimentation. Come taste and experience Central Coast cabernets. They are different; they are Paso!
Let’s take a look at several early Cab (and Bordeaux style) producers who saw the future.

the most important recognition is that once he built it, they came and kept coming, for cabernet sauvignon.
Early Paso Visionaries
Eberle Winery
Released its first cabernet sauvignon in 1979, and you may say this is where Paso Cab started. Forty-one years later, after Gary Eberle led the way for Paso Robles cabernet, he was honored by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as
“An American Wine Legend.”
With all the awards and recognition Eberle (the wines, the winery, and the man) has garnered over the years,
So, your Paso cabernet sauvignon experience is best begun at Eberle Winery. When you visit, you are likely to see Gary sitting in front of the winery, with one or two of his poodles, ready to greet you. For forty-five years, Gary Eberle — the man, the winery, and the wines — has made a strong Paso Robles statement. Taste the wines, learn the story, and discover for yourself why Gary’s the Godfather.
Justin Baldwin of Justin Winery fell in love with wine, specifically Bordeaux wines and cabernet sauvignon, while traveling the world as an investment and international banker.
In 1981, he purchased 160 acres of “dirt” in Paso Robles, with a focus on growing Bordeaux varietals. The initial JUSTIN release was in 1984, with the iconic Isosceles released in 1987.
Justin Baldwin was a true champion of Bordeaux and cabernet sauvignon in these parts.

Jerry Lohr, of J. Lohr Winery, was another early pioneer to plant Bordeaux varietals and produce cabernet sauvignon on the Central Coast. Having begun his wine career in Monterey County, Lohr recognized the potential for Bordeaux varietals in the fledgling area of Paso and planted cabernet sauvignon vines in 1986. Still familyowned today, Jerry Lohr Winery helped
to make Paso Robles internationally recognized for producing elegant cabernet sauvignon and Bordeaux wines.
DAOU Vineyards and Winery may have been relatively “late” on the Paso Cab scene, arriving in 2007. However, they have made a significant contribution in helping promote Paso Robles as a world-renowned cabernet-producing area. Before Daniel Daou and his brother Georges purchased land in Paso, they carefully researched where the best terroir for their vines would be, and eventually settled on acreage in Paso’s Adelaida District AVA. Their vision was to prove that Paso Robles could, and would, produce cabernet sauvignon that was equal to any other California cabernet.
In addition to creating their own brand — which includes several selections of cabernet sauvignon — the Daou brothers were among the founders of the Paso Robles CAB Collective (PRCC), which spotlights the superior quality of Paso Robles AVA cabernet sauvignon and Bordeaux (“C.A.B.”) wines.
Other founding members of the PRCC were Adelaida Cellars, Chateau Margene, Eberle, Halter Ranch Vineyards, J. Lohr, Justin, and Vina Robles Vineyards and Winery. Since its founding in 2012, the PRCC has been a successful advocate for not only Paso Robles cabernet sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals but also for highlighting Paso Robles Wine Country as a whole on the world wine stage.
Cab call
Although not necessarily exclusively cabernet producers, here are some suggestions for where to taste cabernet and Bordeaux-style wines. These are wines from many different AVAs in Paso Robles — unique, enticing, expressive, and reflective of Paso Robles’s diversity.
Chateau Margene
Michael Mooney, influenced by the cabs of Eberle and Justin, came to Paso in 1998 to produce cabernet. As an original founder of the PRCC, Michael is passionate about Paso cab producers’ ability to show what each AVA can produce. They are all different, with their own personalities. A visit to Chateau Margene showcases this small-lot producer of luxury wines and the particular terroir in the Creston AVA.
Paix Sur Terre
Ryan Pease, winemaker/proprietor of Paix Sur Terre, never intended to make a cabernet. Instead, he specialized in Mediterranean white varietals and (his love) Mourvèdre, a Rhône varietal. However, when Ryan moved to his current location in Willow Creek, there was a small existing cabernet vineyard — and so, Ryan had to make a cabernet because the Willow Creek AVA is one of the prime locations for Bordeaux varietals. The result, as Ryan told me: “With the 2021 vintage, we received our first 95 points on a cabernet sauvignon from the distinguished Jeb Dunnuck, proving we have something very special on our hands.” It also proved the adage, “never say never.”
L’Aventure
Stephan Asseo began making wine in Bordeaux, France, and in 1982 built a reputation as an artisan winemaker of the
highest caliber. In 1998, Stephan left Bordeaux, searching for the perfect place to grow Bordeaux varietals and to be able to make wine HIS way, without being fettered by rules and regulations.
Paso Robles’s terroir and “cowboy” history fit Stephan perfectly. For almost 25 years, he has been crafting Bordeaux wines and 100% cabernet, consistently being awarded scores of up to 98-plus.
L’Aventure are elegant wines, made by a Frenchman with a definite Paso Robles vibe.
LXV
Neeta Mittal and her husband, Kunal, hail from India, with the desire to produce small-lot worldclass Bordeaux wine.
Settling in Paso Robles, their inaugural vintage was in 2010. Along with consulting

winemaker, Jeffrey Strekas, LXV produces elegant Bordeaux wines, including several cabernets. Their ultrapremium flagship wine (about 125 cases produced) is the Meso label. “This is our homage to Margaux,” says Neeta, of the Meso cabernet sauvignon. “It is grounded in the three cornerstones of site, élevage, and texture.”
Searching for individual expressive vineyards, winemaker Strekas attempts to stay “out of the way” in the winemaking process, letting the vineyards speak for themselves. LXV’s lineup represents a uniqueness in place and time, as dictated by both the site and the climate of the vintage.
Glunz Family Winery
Steve and Matt Glunz produce several cabernets. These include fruit from their Estate Vineyard in the Genesco AVA. Glunz Family Winery also sources fruit from highly regarded vineyards in Paso’s Westside. Their cabernets truly show off the versatility of the Paso Robles terroir. Matt and Steve do everything, from planting to pruning to hand picking and making the wines. As Matt says, “Our goal is to make a premium wine and consistently over-deliver.”
And The Cab Goes On
Paso Robles is such a diverse area that there are high-quality producers throughout the region. The winemakers reflect the spirit of the early pioneers, ever striving to “let the soil speak.” In addition to the wineries named above, here’s a short list of more producers to get you started on exploring Paso’s cabernet sauvignons: Allegretto, Austin Hope, BENOM, Brecon, Calcareous, Cass, Clos Solène, Copia, Hunt, Robert Hall, Sixmilebridge, and so many more.
Dana Epperson, Decoy Wine’s winemaker and VP of winemaking, made perhaps one of the greatest compliments to Paso Robles’s distinctive AVA. Upon the recent release of

her 2022 Decoy Limited Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, she said, “There is a reason Paso Robles has the most cabernet sauvignon acreage of any California appellation outside of Napa Valley. The local winemaking community has done an amazing job of building global awareness for the region. With our new Decoy Limited offering, we are proud to add our voice to the celebration of Paso Robles and its wines.”
Visit and discover the cabernet and Bordeaux varietal wines of Paso Robles. This is Cab Country. Cheers!

Tifa Chocolate and Gelato in Agoura Hills (just a few miles from the Ventura County line, with additional locations in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and Camarillo) is the place for gelato, artisan chocolates, and fresh-baked cookies. With 24 gelato flavors to choose from — 12 staple flavors and another 12 that rotate — the hand-crafted selections will take your salivary glands on a delightful journey. If you are a chocoholic like I am, the dark chocolate is screaming your name. But don’t overlook the other flavors, like coconut almond chip, pistachio lemon curd, and salted caramel. And, for the purest: vanilla bean! All the gelato is made fresh in each store.
And then there are the cookies! Store-baked and available
Yearning for something sweet during your drive? From Ventura County up through Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County, there are plenty of small, gourmet, artisanal sweet spots to stop at and satisfy your craving. Rori’s Artisanal Creamery is a must for the ice cream lover. There are eight locations, six of which can be found along the Central Coast, but I stopped at the Main Street location in Ventura. This family-owned operation was founded in 2011 by Rori Trovato, who wanted to make gourmet ice cream the way her grandmother used to. As Rori says, “The only way to make it pure is to make it pure,” and to “allow the ingredients to speak for themselves.” They source the freshest ingredients locally, including milk and cream from a Central Coast dairy. There are no hormones or antibiotics, and the cows are grassfed. It all culminates in a difference you can taste. The milk chocolate chunk with salted caramel is highly recommended but visit Rori’s and make your own flavorful discoveries. My personal goal is a Rori’s road trip, hitting each store from Camarillo to Arroyo Grande!

Top This Chocolate, located harbor-side in the Ventura Harbor Village, couldn’t have a more beautiful location to explore and enjoy truly artisanal, handcrafted chocolates. This is a chocolate lover’s nirvana/Shangri-La/dream. Shana Elson opened her gourmet chocolate shop in 2019; a year later, in 2020, the pandemic struck. Shana quickly pivoted her operation with online ordering, curbside pick-up, and shipping. The quality of the chocolates and service spoke for themselves, and Top This Chocolate quickly became a pandemic comfort food. And no wonder — only the best and purest ingredients are used here, and the cocoa is fair-trade certified, non-GMO, and glutenfree.
There is an almost neverending variety of chocolates to choose from, including bars, individual
squares, and chocolate-covered Oreos, to name a few. You can even create your own customized chocolate. Choose from more than 50 topping choices to add to your dark chocolate (vegan), sugar-free dark chocolate (vegan and keto), milk chocolate, and white chocolate. As a wise man once said, “There are four basic food groups: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and chocolate truffles.” Enjoy your visit to this unique chocolate store.

LOKUM is an entirely different experience. Its two locations — one on State Street in Santa Barbara and the other on Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo — serve up simply mouthwatering exotic goodness in the form of baklava, Turkish delight, Turkish coffee, teas, and more. LOKUM’s Turkish delight comes in various “rolls” consisting of nuts and fruits, from which you can cut a piece off and pop in your mouth. Of the samples I tried, my favorite was the brownie chocolate
hazelnut Turkish delight.
And then there’s the baklava! LOKUM offers several selections of this traditional Turkish dessert. With a history dating back to the Ottoman Empire, baklava has been pleasing the dessert lover for over 800 years. The chocolate-lover in me heard the chocolate pistachio baklava calling my name.

Tondi does not use the word “artisanal” lightly, and “pure” and “natural” are not buzzwords here; they are what you taste. Dairy-free and vegan options are also available. If you love pistachio or hazelnut (as does my wife), this is your place to indulge. A taste of Tondi’s mint chip, made from fresh mint, not extracts, is a fantastic experience.

On the opposite end of State Street in Santa Barbara is Menchaca Chocolates, run by husbandand-wife team Pete Menchaca and LeAnne Iverson. They have created a haven of chocolate goodness and artistry. Let’s start with the obvious: chocolate! Pete makes these artisan chocolates in-store with ingredients sourced from Guatemala and Ecuador. Chocolates are organic, microbatch, handmade, vegan, and scrumptiously delicious. Choose from various bars, truffles, bark, dipped mangos, and more. This is more than a chocolate culinary experience; it is a mouthwatering chocoholic dream.
LeAnne — a former art teacher and the mastermind behind Menchaca’s colorful, creative wrappers — has created a fantastic chocolate art experience for chocolate lovers. Her Chocolate Bar & Art Workshop allows you
to make your own chocolate bar creations. Choose from 30 different toppings and three different flavorful chocolates, then design and paint your own one-of-a-kind chocolate box (under the artistic guidance of LeAnne) to hold your chocolates! Not surprisingly, these workshops have become quite popular, so reservations are required.

As you step out of your car near Old West Cinnamon Rolls in Pismo Beach, the aroma will instantly get your salivary glands going. Welcome to the “Old West.” You won’t find anyone packing six-shooters here, but you will find the best darn cinnamon rolls you have ever tasted, made the same way founder Betty Clemens has made them for her family and neighborhood kids for decades. Betty still comes to the store daily to ensure that everything is “just right,” so you can take a delicious step back and savor true deliciousness.
Currently a third-generation Pismo Beach icon (owned and family-operated since 1972), Old West Cinnamon Rolls are handmade and baked fresh daily. You may have to stand in line for a bit before you get to the counter, but the wait will be worth it. You must try the original, but my favorite is the cream cheese frosted roll. Go on, splurge!

The Brown Butter Cookie Company, founded in 2008 by sisters Traci and Christa Hozie in the quaint Central Coast town of Cayucos, is truly an American Dream success story. Sixteen years after they started, there are not only cookie shops in Paso Robles (2013) and San Luis Obispo (2019) and an online store, but the business has also been featured in such esteemed publications as The New York Times and Sunset Magazine.
All three retail locations offer samples when you walk in! And in the Cayucos store, you’ll have the added bonus of seeing cookie production in the works. The Paso Robles storefront is a regular stop of mine every time we visit the area. We love their seasonal cookies, and of course, their assortment of the original brown butter sea salt cookie flavors (cocoa, zesty lemon, and pecan) makes it difficult to leave the store without a bag for ourselves, family, and friends. Recently introduced is Brown Butter Frozen Custard (ice cream), with the “haunting flavor of our Original Brown Butter Sea Salt Cookies.”
If you consider yourself a “cookie monster,” you must stop at one of Brown Butter’s boutique cookie locations. Enjoy the taste of these meltin-your-mouth morsels and the friendliness of
the staff. Taste, savor, buy, and enjoy. You’ll be back!

Negranti Creamery — “ewe” will love it! With several locations on the Central Coast (Tin City in Paso Robles, Atascadero, and San Luis Obispo), you can experience fresh, handmade, artisanal, small-batch ice creams. What is unique about this creamery is that the vast majority of the ice cream is made from sheep’s milk! With a commitment to sustainable agriculture and sourcing from family farms, you will taste the freshness in each flavor. Committed to organic cows and sheep milk and not using artificial dyes or additives, these homemade ice creams are just like Grandma used to make. Negranti has a selection of core flavors (such as my favorites, peanut butter chip, strawberry basil, and salted brown sugar) but also rotates flavors for the season, such as harvest pumpkin.

Magic at Miss Daisy’s
Exploring the Central Coast’s biggest consignment shop
By Maureen McFadden

In the world of pre-used goods, sustainability has become a buzzword. But for treasure seekers like myself, the passion for vintage and gently used items long predates the eco-friendly buzz. It’s all about the hunt and finding that perfect thing you just have to have. Still, it’s a nice perk to know thrifting and antiquing is actually good for Mother Earth!
The Central Coast is brimming with sustainability in the form of antique stores, collectives, and consignment stores. One of my favorites is Miss Daisy’s Consignment & Auction House, on upper State Street in Santa Barbara. When you enter the shop in La Cumbre Plaza, you’ll feel yourself slowing down to meander through the aisles, discovering gems along the way. In a place like this, it’s easy to lose track of time — and no wonder. With 16,000 square feet of floor space, it is the largest consignment store in the region.
Strolling down the aisles at Miss Daisy’s, I can sit down on a piece of furniture, feel the fabric, and imagine how it might fit in my world. If you’re like me, these previously-loved belongings spur ideas, inspiration, and memories.
Rashonne Carruthers, Miss Daisy’s store manager who goes by the nickname Roach, is a great resource and wealth of knowledge on the store’s wares. Roach points me in the direction of a very colorful Murano glass chandelier, and then to something a little more unusual: a set of carved wooden panels depicting the The Rat Pack, by Christopher Guy. These three panels, which measure 12 feet tall, are awesome representations of the hip Las Vegas vibe from the 1950s and ‘60s.
Some of the more unusual finds at Missy Daisy’s include an antique photo booth.
Roach continues with some of her other favorites at Miss Daisy’s: antique brass cash registers from the collection of longtime Santa Barbara businessman Peter Jordano, player pianos, carousel horses, Salvador Dali prints, and a Mysterious Dante Magic poster from the 1930s. “We’ve sold four Steinway baby grands,” Roach adds, “and two baby grands are in the store now.”
One of the things that makes Miss Daisy’s so special is where it’s located — or, more accurately, what’s located nearby. It is in close proximity to incredible estates in places like Montecito, Hope Ranch, and the Santa Ynez Valley, and it is from these estates that Miss Daisy’s sources some truly beautiful, rare, and fascinating treasures. But that’s not the only place Miss Daisy’s owner, Glenn Novack, finds his wares. With Hollywood a short drive away, Glenn also pulls from movie
studios, prop houses, and sets.
The result? A collection that just pops.
Glenn has a great eye for interesting items, no matter the source. Miss Daisy’s inventory ranges from current decor to Asian antiques to ‘70s vintage. Find furniture like coffee tables, dining sets, over-stuffed chairs, lighting, and rugs,
as well as children’s furniture and patio sets. Smaller treasures abound, as well — think cribbage boards, glassware, and old toys.
And the art! “There’s a new gallery space for art. We have so many new canvases just waiting for a place in your office or home, we had to create a special place for them,” says Glenn. Find lithographs, photographs, mirrors and other architectural elements, as well as remarkable fine art from the likes of Calder and Basquiat, and even a floor-to-ceiling oil on canvas by Henry Bouvet.
No matter what you’re looking for, Miss Daisy’s has a fabulous staff. They’re like Sherpas for the customers — vital, in such a big space. As store manager Roach told me, “We have customers who come in daily and weekly. Our customers are awesome people with
Glenn in the store.
An African 1950s hand-carved and painted Punu from Gabon.
whom we have established meaningful relationships. We all get so much joy in helping them find just the right thing. They send us photographs of our items in their homes … We become a part of their lives.”
Making the shopping experience fun is a key ingredient to the Miss Daisy’s recipe. On Sundays from 2 to 5 pm, customers can enjoy live music while they shop. But no matter when you come into the store, look for Best Offer Bid Sheets. Glenn recently implemented this new shopping feature, where customers can make an offer on any item in the store. Just write down your best offer on the yellow sheets and give it to a salesperson, and it could be accepted on the spot.
“An additional fun shopping incentive at Miss Daisy’s is the 10-day tick-down,” says Roach. “Every 10 days the price drops 10% on most items. Customers sometimes roll the dice and wait for the price to drop.”
Roach also suggests customers look for the “Consign for a Cause” stickers on items in the store. This allows consignors to select a nonprofit organization to receive the proceeds from their consignment sales.
None of this is what you might call the usual routine for consignment stores, but it makes the hunt — and the overall experience — much more interesting!
The store often has musical instruments available, like this baby grand piano.

A deep dive into the Valley of the Moon
Photos and story by Nicole Leonetti
Ojai is close to everything, but somehow feels miles away from anything. This captivating valley lies 30 minutes from Ventura beaches and 90 minutes from Los Angeles. Tucked along the Los Padres National Forest foothills, this artists’ enclave has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The valley was originally inhabited by the Chumash people, who revered it as a sacred place. The name Ojai comes from the Chumash word Awha’y, meaning Moon.
For some, Ojai is known as one of the world’s spiritual vortexes, making it ideal for meditation, healing, and soulsearching. In addition to its purported spiritual benefits, Ojai is an idyllic escape for those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. And bonus — Ojai happens to be one of the most dog-friendly places I have ever visited!
• • EATS • •
Starting off your day in Ojai, you can’t go wrong with Bonnie Lu’s Familyowned, this classic American diner serves breakfast and lunch daily with favorites such as Kim’s Perfect Croissant with Ham & Swiss and a sweet Dijon sauce. I typically opt for the Chorizo & Eggs topped with jack & cheddar cheese, served with flour or corn tortillas.
For an easy breakfast bite, Jim & Rob’s Fresh Grill steps up with classic Mexican and American cuisine made with the freshest ingredients. For more than 25 years, they have been serving burritos, tacos, and burgers, along with soft-serve ice cream, churros, floats, and their famous sundaes. Their Chorizo
Breakfast Burrito is my favorite way to start the day. While you’re there, check out the artwork on the walls to learn more about the history of Ojai. And bonus, it’s connected to Lisa’s Cantina, a local favorite and one of the only sports bars in town.
The Dutchess
is another craveable breakfast in Ojai. This bakery and café, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, has a popular weekend brunch. Their Spicy Chicken & Scallion Waffle is my top pick, and they concoct creative cocktails to enhance your brunch experience. And every day, their bakery offers drool-worthy breads, seasonal pastries, cookies, cakes, and pies.
When craving sushi, I always head straight to Sakura Ojai.
Their expansive Japanese fusion menu offers traditional favorites as well as unique rolls like the tempura Ojai
Roll with tuna, salmon, white fish, and avocado. I am partial to their Awesome Roll with fresh salmon and crabmeat topped with mango and avocado.
Ojai Rôtie
is a foodie paradise that I can never seem to get enough of. The concept is a Lebanese/French picnic, with rotisserie chicken at the heart of the menu. You can order a whole chicken to enjoy with sides such as their caramelized cauliflower and pommes rotisserie — potatoes cooked in chicken drippings with a lemon-pepper aioli.
I love their Dippity Dips, a trio of dips: hummus, charred eggplant, and muhammara with grilled manouche. I typically hydrate with a glass or two of their popular Watermelon Water before
diving into the wine selections at their Wine Box. The Wine Box includes several California wines sourced from within 70 miles of Ojai, as well as wines from France and Lebanon. Proprietor and chef, Lorenzo Nicola, curates the wine list and has even started making his own wine out of the famed Sta. Rita Hills.
Ojai does not disappoint when it comes to amazing Italian food, either! Boccali’s Pizza & Pasta has been serving Ojai since 1986, and its location in the East End of Ojai offers excellent views. You can customize your pizza here, selecting your sauce and then choosing from a slew of available toppings. Their garlic bread with melted mozzarella cheese is sinfully delicious. The lasagna is popular, as well, with both meat and vegetarian options. You will also find a great assortment of local beers and wines (including Boccali’s own label — more about that later!). When in season, their strawberry shortcake is top-notch. Same with their home-grown tomatoes! During October, the pumpkin patch behind the restaurant is a delight.
You can also count on Nocciola
for a delicious Italian meal. They have a cozy outdoor patio and are open for lunch and dinner. Opt for a five-course tasting menu or order à la carte. My favorites include the Tortelli Pasta filled with Kabocha Squash, served over a Piave cheese fondue in a sage & brown butter sauce. If you have a hearty appetite, try their Agnello, a lamb shank with a pomegranate port sauce. Their extensive wine list ensures you will find the perfect pairing for your meal.
For a casual spot with good food, look no further than Papa Lennon’s.
Local husband-and-wife team Kasey and Jeff Lennon opened this pizzeria in Ojai’s Meiners Oaks neighborhood in 2008. Come in for their scrumptious salads, grilled paninis, and pasta, in addition to their storied pizzas.
One of the most popular menu items is the Blackened Chicken Caesar Roll-up. Papa Lennon’s makes all their bread, pizza dough, and salad dressings inhouse. Their desserts are made from scratch as well – good luck deciding between their crème brûlée and tiramisu!
Papa Lennon’s has a cozy dog-friendly patio and offers wine and beer, so you can spend a lovely Ojai evening there. Their beer comes from local breweries and is offered on tap. Kasey shared that Papa Lennon’s “came out of love for our family and the community … Ojai is a magical place in the world! It’s a sweet place where people really love one another.”
Down the street from Papa Lennon’s is the Ojai Noodle House
I’ve been dreaming about this place since my recent visit. A new-ish Ojai restaurant, they serve Vietnamese choices like Bánh Mì, Bánh Xèo, and Pho. Not to be missed: Their take on a smashburger with sriracha aioli coleslaw and house made Vietnamese salsa seca. However, I am there for the noodles, and I can eat bowls and bowls of their Spicy Garlic Noodles served with your choice of protein. Their spacious outdoor patio will be an idyllic setting once springtime rolls around.
Back in downtown Ojai, Rory’s Place
has a menu focused on fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients. Their menu ranges from Caviar & Chips with crème fraîche and chives to their Roasted Chicken with wood-fired escarole, blackberry, and capers. They have an impressive oyster bar and a clever cocktail menu. Their wine list has been thoughtfully

curated to highlight natural wines.
For a mid-day snack, you will adore Sun Oven Bakery, a gluten-free, vegan, and nut-free bakery that serves delicious bread, bagels, muffins, doughnuts, cakes, and more. Since 2014, they’ve focused on creating wholesome, artisan baked goods that everyone can enjoy. Their Cinnamon Rolls have the perfect texture, and the Rice Crispy Bars are the perfect snack. Try them half-dipped in chocolate with sprinkles.
When only ice cream will do, head over to Ojai Ice Cream. Owner Kodi Berg grew up in Ojai and worked at the shop in high school. Ojai Ice Cream serves next-level delicious ice cream and still employs local high school students. Their ice cream is made onsite with flavors such as Valley Lavender, Ojai Orange, and Pistachio Chili Nut. They do seasonal drops of different flavors, and while you can order a cone or cup to enjoy while roaming around Ojai, they also sell pints along with bulk candy and coffee drinks such as their delicious affogato.
DRINKS
taproom is located in the heart of downtown Ojai. Enjoy a cold beer at the bar, along with tasty bites from the Little Sama Ojai walk-up window located inside (I highly recommend the signature
wings). Relax on the patio and take in breathtaking views of the majestic Chief Peak — while sipping a Chief Peak IPA!
Ojai Valley Brewery produces beers inspired by the valley’s terroir and botanicals. Owner Elizabeth Haffner’s lineup includes brews like Sage Beer, infused with local sagebrush, and Pixie Beer, a refreshing white ale. The popular Sugar Bush is similar to an IPA and is affectionately known as an “Ojai PA.” Non-alcoholic options include kombucha and a delicious grape juice on tap. The brewery is also home to Side Street Wine,
founded by Elizabeth in collaboration with renowned winemaker Fabien Castel. Fabien’s philosophy of winemaking is akin to the free-flowing spirit of jazz, letting the process unfold naturally rather than overanalyzing it. They focus on organic, sustainable practices and produce wines using grapes sourced from local vineyards in Ojai and Ventura County. Their standout offerings include the Piquette, a lowalcohol (5%) fizzy wine made from the skins and stems of grapes, and the Anarchy, a sparkling pét-nat available on tap. Among their red wines is Liberté, a blend of Mourvèdre and Malbec that brings a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and alcohol.
Enjoy a beer, wine, or both in the dogfriendly beer and wine garden. On weekends, live music and pop-up food vendors add to the lively atmosphere,
making it the perfect spot to relax and experience the best of Ojai’s local craft culture. Fabien praises the area’s diverse climate, which allows for a variety of crops and makes Ojai ideal for many wine varietals.
Boccali Vineyards & Winery had their first vintage in 2007 and have been making great wine ever since. Winemakers Joe and DeWayne Boccali believe that the quality of the soil and the attention to detail that goes into maintaining their vineyards can be experienced in each glass of their handcrafted wines. On weekends, they offer relaxing, outdoor tastings at Boccali’s Pizza & Pasta, where you can sit under oak trees while enjoying their wine. Their refreshing Valley Oak Viognier is a favorite, and their Topa Topa Syrah has notes of blackberries, plums, and spice.
Ojai Mountain Winery & Vineyard
crafts exceptional wines at remarkable altitudes. Owners Olga and Mikhail Chernov acquired the property in 2015 and planted their first vines in 2018 at an impressive elevation of 2,800 feet. They follow biodynamic and sustainable farming practices and focus on Rhône varietals, which thrive in this unique microclimate reminiscent of France’s southern Rhône region. Their Estate White blends Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, and Roussanne, while the Estate Red fuses Bordeaux and Rhône varieties — Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, and Cabernet Franc.
Winemaker Erich Bradley shares, “Our goal is to showcase the distinctiveness of our rugged terrain, where grapes flourish at nearly 3,000 feet. It’s an extraordinary site, as few vineyards

anywhere in the world grow grapes at such high elevation.” Visits to Ojai Mountain Winery are by appointment only, accommodating groups of up to eight people.
Open daily, The Ojai Vineyard
tasting room has oodles of wine to choose from. Famed owner-winemaker Adam Tolmach has been making wine in Ojai since the 1980s, and his grapes are sourced from iconic vineyards throughout California, such as Bien Nacido in Santa Barbara County.
While you can’t go wrong with their current release wines, I urge you to try some of their library wines, such as the 2013 La Cote Pinot Noir or their 2009 Santa Barbara Syrah. Each sip gives you a sense of place enhanced by Adam’s minimal intervention winemaking style.
Majestic Oak Vineyard,
a family-owned winery with a tasting room in downtown Ojai, serves wine on their charming patio which sits below street level and is blanketed by vines and bistro lights. Their 2022 Chardonnay has notes of honeydew, citrus, and hazelnut, and their Syrah is bold and spicy with heaps of raspberry and black fruit.
They have a wine club, too, so you can enjoy their wines throughout the year.
Right about now, you might be in need of an energy boost. Thankfully, Ojai has no shortage of charming coffee spots to refuel. Ojai Coffee Roasters offers locally roasted coffee and a
wide-ranging menu of coffee and tea options. Signature drinks like the Lavender Latte and Golden Turmeric Latte are crowd-pleasers, while their refreshing smoothies, including the Ojai Julius, add a fun twist. If you’re feeling peckish, they also serve a selection of delicious salads and sandwiches.
At Java & Joe, discover an impressive selection of whole bean coffee and loose-leaf teas. As a tea lover myself, I highly recommend their Blue Eyes blend — a mix of apple, strawberry, orange, cornflowers, and hibiscus that’s fantastic hot or iced. They also offer a variety of gifts, like mugs, brewers, and teapots.
Speaking of tea, Magic Hour
is another happy place for me. Magic Hour’s organic ceremonial teas, crafted in Ojai by Zhena Muzyka, are designed to inspire mindfulness and unity. I could spend the afternoon there sipping tea and browsing their tea sets, books, gift sets, and what seems like endless tea options. You will learn about the wellness benefits of each tea. For example, The Oracle is a lemon lavender tea that improves digestive health and reduces stress.
After tea and tranquility, time for an adult beverage. The Hut, a classic, old-school bar in the Meiners Oaks neighborhood, is a fun place to stop for
a drink. You’ll find live music, pool tables, a great beer selection, and a very casual, no-frills vibe. I love finding my favorite songs to play on their jukebox.
Ojai Beverage Company, open for lunch and dinner, serves creative cocktails such as the Western Punch with Bourbon, Orange Bitters, and Housemade Pomegranate Shrub. But what they’re really known for is their vast selection of beers (on tap and in bottles), wines, and spirits. The food is also excellent. I loved the Fried Pickles and Chicken Wings.

SHOP
General Store
focuses on local Ojai products. The name, a play on pixie fairies and the famous Ojai Pixie Tangerine, embodies the shop with a mix of nostalgia and magic. They have a large kids and baby section as well as books, skincare, candles, bags, artwork, stickers, and more — much of which comes from small, woman-owned businesses. Of course, there is also a Pixie section with everything Pixie you can imagine, such as candles, hats, stickers, and more.
One of my favorite places to get lost in is Bart’s Books.
This iconic bookstore, open seven days a week, is touted as the world’s largest outdoor bookshop. Known for its massive inventory of used and new books, Bart’s has every genre covered from kids to adult, and offers something at every price point, from fifty-cent books to rare collector’s items.
Founded in 1964, Bart’s has an amazing atmosphere, unparalleled selection, and impressive service. I recently put Bart’s to the test with a hard-to-find book. Not only did they have it in stock, but the salesperson didn’t even have to look up where to find it. They just walked me directly to the section and shelf where it was located!
If you can’t find me perusing the aisles at Bart’s, then look in Nutmeg’s Ojai House. I love a metaphysical shop, and Nutmeg’s fits the bill. Owner Meg Goodwin opened the shop in 2000 after she was called to Ojai while working in the entertainment industry in L.A. She has curated a wide array of products, such as crystals, tarot cards, books, and candles, and enlists a variety of skilled practitioners who offer energy readings, astrology readings, reiki sessions, and intuitive massages. They also host events such as full moon meditations and goddess groups focused on female empowerment.
The Crystal Corner, another magical spot in Ojai, has a stunning selection of crystals along with jewelry, books, herbs, and assorted gifts for the sorcerer in your life. You can also get readings
ranging from psychic and tarot readings to the fascinating Akashic records readings. Their readers and healers have vast experience and come from diverse backgrounds in the metaphysical space.
Jes MaHarry is a gem of a jewelry shop located in downtown Ojai, currently celebrating their 10-year anniversary. Owner Jes MaHarry designs and makes the jewelry using only ethically-sourced materials with 100% recycled metals to align with the mindful practices of the shop. The shop itself is a sight to behold – all the fixtures, tables, and hand-painted murals are custom-made by Jes and her family. Even the cash register is made from hand-formed copper! The jewelry itself, known for its organic sculptural techniques, is lovingly handcrafted. Jes shares, “We employ artisans in Ojai, and everything is made in Ojai.” You will find new designs offered frequently throughout the year, so you will discover something a little different on each visit.
At this point, my beloved dog, Frankie, is begging for some attention and treats! Hey Bingo specializes in holistic and all-natural pet supplies and has a carefully curated selection of products that are free from harmful chemicals and additives. Here you’ll find healthy dog and cat food from brands such as Bones & Co, Smallbatch, and Halshan. From organic food and treats to natural remedies and supplements, Hey Bingo has everything needed to keep your pets healthy and happy!
You will find that Ojai is a strong artist community, and you can get in on the action by stopping by OVA Arts,
Pixie’s

a gallery for local Ojai artists where you can shop for a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Admire work from both highly regarded and emerging local talent and take home original fine art, custom jewelry, and contemporary crafts.
Dan Schultz Fine Art
is a gallery where you can interact directly with the artist. The gallery, Dan’s working studio, allows visitors to see works in progress. His popular plein air Ojai landscapes are on display along with his award-winning paintings of figures outdoors and his portrait work.
Recently, they expanded with a section to showcase artwork by Dan’s wife, Sarah, and by their young son, so there are always fresh paintings on display and the artwork is available for sale.
If antiques & collectibles are your thing, then you will love Treasures of Ojai.
They have everything you can imagine: furniture, statues, fountains, pottery, vinyl records, clothing, fine china, toys, jewelry, and more.
You can spend the afternoon on an actual treasure hunt here to discover the best antique finds.
Even while shopping, I still have food on the brain, so Ojai Roots
is heaven for me. This is a farm shop that is the perfect place to stop for provisions to enjoy at home. They have kitchen décor, salts, marmalade, garden seeds, and so much more. Bonus, you can order a glass of wine and snacks to enjoy outside in their wine garden!
For a unique Ojai experience, I recommend the Heavenly Honey Tasting Room
Owner Barbara Haskins says Heavenly Honey was created “with the utmost respect to the hard work the bees do.” They focus on making delectable honey with no artificial flavors added. You can learn about honey with a tasting flight, where each sample is more delicious than the last, from orange blossom (my favorite) to clover, pomegranate, and fiddleneck. Fiddleneck wildflowers grow in the foothills of Ojai and every taste is reminiscent of Ojai itself.

under the weather. Then there’s the Crystalized Sunflower Honey, a spreadable creamed honey that tastes just heavenly. Spread it on scones, pancakes, or even stir it into your favorite oatmeal for a luxurious upgrade to your meal. Heavenly Honey will start making mead this year, too!
A little further out of town, set amongst olive groves in the East End, is the Ojai Olive Oil Company. Here you can sample olive oils, learn more about making olive oil, and shop all of their products. They are pet-friendly and even have an enclosed pet area where your pups can enjoy themselves while you explore the olive oil options. They have amazing oils such as their Ojai Pixie-infused variety. They also make skin care products including olive oil lip balms and face creams.
Lastly, I am obsessed with Rains. Rains is an Ojai institution located in the downtown Arcade, where you can find literally anything – clothing, kitchen supplies, cookbooks, home décor, hardware, bath and body products … I could go on and on. Rains is typically my last stop in Ojai, so I can pick up anything still needed to commemorate my Ojai visit.

Opportunities abound to keep the body and mind active while in Ojai. I personally like to start my day with a hike. Luckily, the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy
Preserve provides an invigorating hike popular with mountain bikers and bird watchers alike.
The Ojai Meadows Preserve is an easy, mostly flat hike, while the Valley View Preserve offers, unsurprisingly, magnificent views from the mountains above downtown.
Both provide ample opportunity for viewing wildlife and wildflower blooms. OVLC also offers volunteer opportunities and a range of walks you can join to learn about the ecology of Ojai Valley. The OVLC’s Native Plant Tour, coming up in April, will let you tour the native gardens of Ojai.
While you can spend days exploring the hiking trails, another way to take in the breathtaking views, mountain ranges, and wildlife is on horseback with Ojai Valley Trail Riding Company. A one-hour guided trail ride will take you through the picturesque trails of the Ventura River valley. The ride is suitable for all abilities, so a beginner like me can still enjoy the ride. They also offer private and group lessons.
Ojai’s history. The All Around Ojai Tour starts at three hours and includes stops for an olive oil tasting, wine tasting, and a stop at a scenic overlook. There are several enhancements that can be added to tours, including lunch, craft beer tastings, and even a visit to a local artist’s studio.
Another place to enjoy local art is the Ojai Valley Museum,
housed in a historic former church. There are a number of exhibits, including a diorama of the Ojai backcountry and a section that highlights local artists. Another Ojai-focused exhibit area changes quarterly throughout the year. Docent-led walking tours happen on Saturday mornings, and the museum’s Town Talks allow historians and authors to share insights into Ojai’s past, notable figures, and achievements.
On the third Friday of every month, the museum stays open until 7 pm, and visitors can enjoy crafts and live music in addition to the exhibits.

Their two-hour workshops for visitors include a tour of the studio, pottery instruction, and the opportunity to create five pieces of pottery. This class works for any skill level! They’ll ship your finished pieces to you, or you can come back to pick them up. Firestick also offers private events for birthdays, team building, bachelorette parties, and more. Even if you’re hesitant to try your hand at pottery, Firestick is an awesome place to shop the work of more than 50 potters. Firestick also sells clay, pottery wheels, and more. I definitely got bitten by the pottery bug after my first workshop!

While Ojai makes for an ideal day trip, I suggest embracing the Ojai state of mind by staying a weekend (or longer). Ojai is brimming with unique options to call home during your next adventure.
I am currently obsessed with Blue Iguana Inn and Emerald Iguana Inn
These iconic Ojai hotels are owned by Julie Whitman with her husband Marc, an award-winning architect and artist.
Together they built and designed the properties, filling them with curated paintings, sculptures, and metal works. Every room contains original artwork created by local artists as well as pieces from Julia’s travels. Originally a 1950s roadside motel, Blue Iguana Inn opened in 1997. The spacious property offers a variety of dog-friendly room types alongside charming lawns, gardens, and courtyards that make you feel as if you are staying in a historic Mexican pueblo. Located two miles out of town, the inn gives you the feeling of escape and allows for incredible stargazing opportunities. Their lovely pool and whirlpool spa along with their continental breakfast basket completes the perfect stay.
Located in downtown Ojai, the Emerald Iguana Inn
opened in 2000 as a boutique property that feels remote but is walking distance to many of the shops and restaurants in town. Boasting an art nouveau design, the Emerald Iguana offers an array of cottages and suites to choose from.
They have an outdoor pool and jacuzzi to enjoy as well as continental breakfast basket and wine packages available to order in advance. These two unique boutique hotels offer standard rooms as well as one and two-bedroom suites and cottages with full kitchens and living rooms.
If a bed & breakfast is more your speed, you will love Lavender Inn
located in the heart of Ojai. Owners Kathy and Mark Hartley bought the inn in 2003 and renamed it Lavender Inn. Dating back to 1874, the building was the first schoolhouse in Ojai and still includes some of the original

brickwork in the kitchen. It has been wonderfully maintained throughout the years, and now you will find seven rooms in the main house (some petfriendly!) and one cottage with a private backyard, kitchenette, and fireplace. Their continental breakfast includes homemade pastries, scones, and breakfast breads, and they pour complimentary wine in the late afternoon that you can sip while relaxing on the veranda. The property contains fountains, an English garden, and a small pond, which makes it an enchanting location to celebrate a special occasion. At night while wandering the property you will hear the symphony of frogs in the pond. There is also a small day spa on-site where you can enjoy massages, facials, and more.
Throughout my Central Coast travels, I have become a fan of Social Shelter Club hotel properties, and three of their properties are located here in Ojai. Kenny Osehan, Shelter Social Club CEO & founder, says, “Our properties are unique because we work with a lot of artist friends to create energy, warmth, creativity, and an intimate environment for our guests to feel at ease and comforted while also finding inspiration in the little details.” Their properties have pet-friendly rooms and complimentary bike rentals.
Their Spanish cottage-style Hummingbird Inn
area, and a relaxing pool
with incredible views of the surrounding mountains.
The Capri,
a 1960s mid-century modern hotel, offers a variety of room types and suites, and a welcoming pool and jacuzzi
that give oasis vibes with the surrounding trees and foliage. Finally, the Ojai Rancho Inn, a ‘50s ranch-style property, feels like summer camp for adults. They offer bikes, a pool, and stylish guest rooms along with Chief’s Peak, an intimate bar with a stellar selection of natural wines, beer, cocktails, and good music. Grab a drink at the bar, the poolside patio, or a bottle to enjoy back in your room.
Another hotel to highlight, Chantico Inn,
is centrally located on Ojai Avenue, just west of the downtown area. Husbandand-wife team Dario & Tia Pini have owned the hotel for close to 20 years and offer guests a lovely assortment of pet-friendly rooms and suites, with jacuzzi tubs and private patios — perfect to enjoy the famous Ojai Pink Moment at sunset. The Chantico also has a heated pool and hot tub, a complimentary continental breakfast, and a wine & cheese reception on the weekends. This place provides value and convenience while still offering the feeling of escape from city life.
Kodi Berg of Ojai Ice Cream shared an old Ojai adage with me: “Nothing to do, and not enough time to do it.”
After my deep dive into all things Ojai, I understand the sentiment completely. Ojai can feel like the perfect relaxing escape — yet you will never get bored with seemingly endless options for activities. I invite you to explore all that Ojai offers on your next visit!

This one’s not exactly a single event in a single location. In fact, it’s a global event, over several days. The Great Backyard Bird Count is a citizen-science effort at, you guessed it, counting birds. The result is a huge pile of data that help scientists better understand not just birds, but entire ecosystems. On the Central Coast, winter is an excellent time for bird watching, and with several Audubon chapters in the area, birders of all skill levels can join this effort. Simi Hills Golf Course A charming challenge
By Mike Miller
Nestled in the scenic landscape of Southern California, the Simi Hills Golf Course offers a blend of natural beauty, challenging play, and serene surroundings that make it a standout destination for golfers of all levels. Situated in southeastern Ventura County, this course combines both charm and difficulty, creating a memorable experience for its visitors.
Simi Hills Golf Course is a par-71, 18-hole championship layout designed by the renowned golf architect Ted Robinson. The course plays to a manageable 6,651 yards from the back tees through rolling, oakstudded hills. The distant mountains provide a picturesque backdrop that enhances the overall golfing experience.
From the moment you step onto the first tee, the course reveals its character. The layout features a mix of long par 4s, demanding par 3s, and risk-reward par 5s, each presenting its own unique set of difficulties. The fairways are fairly wide (something I certainly appreciated) but are lined with thoughtfully placed bunkers and natural vegetation that can turn an errant shot into a tough recovery and an unplayable ball situation.
The par-3 holes at Simi Hills are particularly noteworthy. With well-guarded greens, they require both precision and strategy. The par5s offer opportunities for birdies but require accurate shot placement to avoid the various hazards. The par-4s vary in length and difficulty, with some holes playing longer and requiring solid tee shots.
During my morning round, I played with Ernie Pina. Like me, he had never played Simi Hills. “I was very happy with the experience,” Ernie said. “The course is in pretty good shape, and I liked the layout. It was a hot day, but the pace was reasonable for a weekend. I’ll definitely want to come back now that I have a sense of the course layout.”
Simi Hills offers the opportunity for low scores, but as we learned during our round, it helps to know this course. We both left a number of strokes out there — those hidden difficulty areas got us a few times.
One of the standout features of Simi Hills Golf Course is its better-than-average maintenance for a course that gets a lot of play. The fairways provide a good lie for your ball (when you manage to hit the fairway). The greens are fast and true, with subtle breaks that can be tricky for even seasoned putters. The bunkers are fairly well-kept, too.
Across the board, we were impressed with the staff. From the pro shop to The Birdie Bar restaurant, the service is attentive and professional, making every visit feel special. Whether you’re a local regular or a first-
time visitor, the staff’s hospitality adds to the overall positive experience.
In addition to its 18 holes, Simi Hills Golf Course boasts a comprehensive practice area that includes a driving range, chipping green, and putting green. The practice facilities are well cared for, and offer a great place to warm up before your round, or to work on specific aspects of your game. The driving range, which is lighted, offers a large bucket of balls for $14, while a small one will run you $6.
The clubhouse offers a range of amenities, including a pro shop stocked with the latest golf gear and apparel. The Birdie Bar provides a variety of dining options, from quick snacks to more substantial meals, allowing golfers to relax and unwind after their round.
In terms of value, Simi Hills Golf Course delivers a great golfing experience at a reasonable price. The green fees are competitive, and the quality of the course — along with its amenities — justifies the cost. The overall experience, including the course condition, scenery, and service, offers excellent value for money, making it a worthwhile choice for both local golfers and those visiting the area. Primetime weekend rates run $80 with a cart and $62 to walk, with twilight rates dropping to $47 and $35 on the weekend.
Simi Hills Golf Course is truly a testament to the quality and charm that Central Coast golf has to offer. It’s a must-play, and a destination worth visiting again and again.
The Simi Hills Golf Course is located at 5031 Alamo St., Simi Valley. For tee times and more, visit simihillsgolf.com or call (805) 522-0803.
Up-cycled, vintage and new fashion for the whole family

SIMI HILLS GOLF COURSE
Simi Hills Golf Course offers tree-lined rolling fairways and plush greens that will challenge golfers of all skill levels. Water hazards come into play on eight holes, and over 50 bunkers are strategically placed throughout the layout. The course is extremely fair and fun for all golfers - just pick one of the five sets of tees to match your game, and you’ll be on your way to a great day. Simi Hills is dedicated to providing an exceptional golf experience and one of the best values in the state. In addition to 18 great holes of golf, Simi Hills offers exceptional practice facilities, with a lighted driving range and practice putting green, as well as chipping and bunker practice areas. 5031 Alamo St., Simi Valley, CA

Story and photos by Zach Rosen
Elsie’s
It is often difficult to define what makes a dive bar a dive bar. Is it the dive’s history? Is it the simple drink list? The ambiance and longtime regulars? Maybe even the bar just has long hours, making it a place of refuge for any time of day.
Each of these bars not only find their own unique expression of “dive,” but they bring their own defining character to the community that surrounds them.
Elsie’s Tavern
One of the most debated topics between local drinkers is whether Elsie’s Tavern is a dive bar or not. It serves beer and wine only, which often makes people exclude it; however, the ambiance certainly brings the dive feel (only it’s a little more artsy and polished than a normal dive). Stylish lamps, old license plates, quirky paintings, and eccentric trinkets, plus a plethora of photographs, give regulars something to continue to look at and discover over the years. Couches, and plenty of comfy nooks and crannies, are what make this bar such a popular spot for gathering with friends. Rotating art exhibits bring something new to the walls, and Elsie’s is often the first stop for blossoming artists in the area.
Many of the people there have been regulars for years, and the easiest way to identify a tourist visiting it is if they come in asking for a shot of something (the bar is cash-only, so make sure to bring the green). They have started serving shochu cocktails, but here beer is the go-to, and Elsie’s has offered the same wide range of brews for more than a decade. Their menu has changed a little as brewers come and go, but the biggest switch-up in offerings is on their rotating “Dragon” and “Wizard” taps.
Find Elsie’s at 117 W. de La Guerra St, Santa Barbara.
The Sportsman
For decades, The Sportsman was one of Santa Barbara’s most popular dives. It closed its doors in 2017 due to a rent increase — much to the dismay of locals — but fortunately, it found a new home on State Street just a year later. Its stylized blue neon sign used to define its old location on Figueroa Street. The City of Santa Barbara has strict sign ordinances on exterior neon signs, so the iconic sign now sits inside the space, where it illuminates its clientele with familiar vibes.
Sportsman
Located in the heart of downtown, The Sportsman contrasts with the historic Granada Theater and the posh Good Lion cocktail bar that sit next door. While operagoers and mixologists crowd outside, a friendly yet feisty audience fills the dive with an energetic air where the only thing stronger than the drinks are the conversations going on. The bar has simple décor and old photographs of athletes, and deer heads along a wall looking down on its patrons. A pool table sits in the front window and TVs play the obligatory sports that help give the dive its name. But really, this bar is about getting to know friends and strangers better over stiff drinks.
Find The Sportsman at 1226 State St, Santa Barbara.
Elsie’s
The Cliff Room
The neighborhood known as The Mesa, which lingers over Santa Barbara, is its own microcosm with distinct businesses and ambiance. The Cliff Room has been serving cheap drinks and warm vibes to Mesa locals since 1986. The long, thin bar is nestled between local businesses on Cliff Drive. With dual pool tables in the back and brick and wood planks lining the wall, this dive has a cozy feel. Behind the bar, a portrait of Jack Nicholson blowing a smoke ring sets the tone of the space.
One of the longstanding draws is its Thursday night karaoke that brings in throngs of locals. The place fills with groups of friends sitting in the big booths eagerly waiting their turn to sing a tune. As the evening and voices wane, and the neighboring culinary mainstays like Rose Café, Alcazar, and Ichiban Sushi have gone to rest, the breathless troubadours can often be seen congregating at the small Taco Bell take-out window in the back parking lot. Sometimes a little late-night fast food is the perfect complement for a night of singing your favorite songs at a dive.
Find The Cliff Room at 1828 Cliff Dr, Santa Barbara.
Tiburon Tavern
Just down from Mesa Hill on upper State Street is another karaoke mainstay in the community. Tiburon Tavern has been a definitive spot for the song sport for decades, with coworkers and friends
flocking to the dive every Friday and Saturday night. Some singers may have even been coming here as long as it has been offering karaoke.
Tiburon is Spanish for shark, and the dive’s emblem is a shark swimming in a martini glass. The sign for the bar sits next to a distinct red awning and vine-covered wall with a small bench

underneath. The charming frontage belies the quintessentially dark, dank dive within. Enter the Tiburon and one will find a bar that spans the space and faces a bench with adorning cocktail tables that line the wall. When the highenergy karaoke scene is not happening, the dive takes on a more serene pace, with regulars stopping in for a drink and a place to spend the day, or just get a little relaxation after work.

lives up to this description with palm trees sitting out front, an adobe stucco façade, and a balcony above.
Brew & Cue
Brew & Cue is one of Santa Barbara County’s newest dive bars. Started by owners Jessica and Joseph Dolce and Yesenia Marquez in 2021, the bar sits near the corner of Linden and Carpinteria Avenue along the city’s main thoroughfare and just down the street from Carpinteria’s historic Alcazar Theatre. Brew & Cue uses the slogan “Coastal Hangout,” and it certainly
While Brew & Cue serves cocktails, wine, and of course, brews, its main draw is the range of entertainment and games. Naturally, there are pool tables and TVs, along with a slew of arcade games, darts, air hockey, and most especially, pinball machines that give patrons plenty to do while there. The back wall even hosts a jukebox from the iconic (and now shuttered) Palms restaurant, where Jessica used to bartend. Another unique feature is the long bar that has been epoxied with beach finds and mementos from the owners’ lives, giving a story for the bar to tell and visitors to discover.

The Nugget
Open since the ‘50s, The Nugget Bar & Grill is a blend of a saloonstyle restaurant with a dash of dive vibes that pays homage to California’s past. The Western theme is animated with loads of mining gear, taxidermy, and photographs from the Old West filling the walls. One may occasionally even see a horse or two tied up out front. The front façade looks like an old saloon adorned with wagon wheels. Inside, wood and leather define the décor, giving the establishment a distinctly brown tone with strings of holiday lights bringing a little color to the restaurant.
Rib Night on Fridays and Saturdays. The Weekend Brunches bring out crowds of locals sipping on Tequila Sunrises to wash down their popular Chile Verde Working Man’s Breakfast, served with two eggs.
Find The Nugget at 2318 Lillie Ave, Summerland.
Located in the small cheery town of Summerland, and with outposts in Goleta and Carpinteria, The Nugget is the spot to grab not just a stiff drink but a T-bone steak as well. While plenty of people just come for the drinks, it is a popular eatery with a range of classic American fare like burgers, sandwiches, and steaks, including its popular Prime
Jasper’s
Just north of Santa Barbara along the 101, lies the slower-moving town of Lompoc. One dive bar has been serving this community for nearly 100 years. Named in 2010 by Playboy’s Guide to America’s Greatest Bars as
one of the best dive bars in the country, Jasper’s was founded in 1933 by Jasper Wygal. The bar has changed ownership and locations over the years, and today, it is marked by a simple sign with red lettering on H Street just off Ocean Avenue. A mural depicting the area’s viticulture community and other historical moments lines the outside of the bar, and inside, the ceiling is covered with beer paraphernalia, posters, license plates, and musical instruments. In fact, many of these objects fill the

surrounding walls as well, and there are doodads and trinkets to be seen in every direction. The place is a testament to the lesserknown history of Lompoc with everything from a shrine to W.C. Fields, who set his 1940 film “The Bank Dick” in the town, to keepsakes from locals. With twenty taps and a full bar, there is plenty to drink but really this establishment is for regulars to show their Lompoc pride and visitors to learn more about the area.

The Wicked Shamrock
Just a few blocks away from Jasper’s and off the corner of Walnut Avenue is a dive with a little less history, but just as much frivolity. The Wicked Shamrock describes itself as an “Irish Surf Pub.” The unusual moniker comes from partowner Dominic Keen, who is both Irish and a surfer, and just as uniquely, is a fifth-grade teacher during his day job. Co-owned with Ben Harper, the bar will
often play surf videos on the TVs and seeks to bring the warm, welcoming environment of a pub.
It was renamed from the Red Fox in 2021, and now sports shamrock green walls and details, with a marker board describing its large, revolving tap list. Stickers are slapped all over the draft tables and shamrocks, Irish adornments, and pub décor give this surf dive its truly unique nature. Daily specials like Tequila Tuesday and Whiskey Wednesdays also give each day its own flavor.

The Maverick Saloon
Today, Santa Ynez is known as one of the Central Coast’s definitive wine towns. But The Maverick Saloon has been around for much longer than any wine trail. Since 1906, it has been serving up drinks to passersby and locals. In the ‘60s, a barn was built next door from materials salvaged from demolished Victorian houses. The barn became a permanent part of the

Maverick Saloon in 1992, and today, it serves as an entertainment annex for the saloon where bands, karaoke, parties, and other live entertainment keeps its visitors moving.
The building lives up to its saloon descriptor, with the inside and attached
barn looking like an authentic antique space — because The Maverick actually is antique. The ceiling and walls are littered with countless dollar bills along with notes, autographs, and other memories that tell of this establishment’s long history. Both the inside and quaint outdoor porch area hosts guests with a menu of American food and specialty drinks — like the Lulu Bell, which plays off the original restaurant’s name and blends Tito’s Vodka with St. Germain, strawberry, lime, and mint.

High Roller Tiki Lounge
The touristy town of Solvang is best known for its Danish history, and not necessarily its tiki drinks. Yet that is what High Roller Tiki Lounge brings, and delivers
them well. The small bar looks like a tiki shack attached to a Danish building and is a special sight among the distinct architecture of Solvang. Come inside the lounge and you’ll find iconic tiki décor with palm frond overhangs, plenty of masks, tropical lighting, and maritime details.
The High Roller does not have a liquor license but does serve a series of tiki drinks that use “liquor-alternative spirits” to give each drink a real cocktail feel and flavor. Others are unique twists on classic drinks, like their Suffering Scandinavian which melds white wine, ginger beer, lime juice, and bitters. The Inland Tsunami takes “rum” and mixes it with basil syrup, lime, lemongrass syrup, and coconut cream. Also of note is their Bettie Page wines that feature label designs from retro artist Al Abbazia. Whatever one you choose, each drink will bring an unexpected exotic feel to any visit to this Danish town.
