Editor’s Note

It’s a big issue for us here at the California 101 Travelers Guide: We’re celebrating five years on the Central Coast! As longtime locals, we take pride in sharing the best this region has to offer — the best things to see, do, taste, and experience.

Maybe we’re a little biased, but we think it’s tough to beat Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties. (If you’ve been a reader for a while, you probably know I’ve said that before — but hey, some things are worth repeating!) Around here, you can find the excitement of a bustling college town, the calm of bucolic wine country, the thrill of world-class theater productions and cuisine, the significance and complexity of our rich history, and the inspiration of our numerous county, state, and national parks, monuments, and wilderness areas. And, best of all, you’ll find that the people keeping it all going are uniquely community-minded. We might be located within an easy drive to the big cities, but we’re small-town folks at heart.

That’s what really keeps us going here at the CA-101 Travelers Guide: the people. Their dedication to our communities inspires our commitment to sharing, and preserving, the things we love about the place we call home.

CA 101 Old Town Orcutt (page 92). LikeThe Village of Arroyo Grande, it’s tiny but mighty. The surprising diversity of eateries, wineries, and breweries here complement its wide array of shops and fun things to do. You’ll also find some gorgeous places to stay!

CA 101 Old Santa Ynez Days (page 76). This celebration tips its cowboy hat to the region’s ranching and agricultural history. Tortilla toss, pig roast, parade, rodeo, shopping, trucks, line dancing, and more make Santa Ynez the place to be June 21 through 23.

CA 101 Granada Theatre (page 64). Also steeped in history is the Granada Theatre, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year as the matriarch of State Street. Santa Barbara was put on the cinematic and theatric map thanks in large part to this Santa Barbara landmark.

CA 101 Seaside Gems at Ventura (page 28). We’re rockin’ it old school (way old school) at this massive multi-day event May 24 to 26. Find internationally renowned speakers, freebies for kids, and treasures for all ages at this gem, mineral, and geology extravaganza.

SEAFOOD S ON THE CENTRAL COAST

We’re spoiled by many things here along the Central Coast — weather, views, people, and food among them. One of our favorites, which have not yet been fully explored in these pages, is the wealth of seafood restaurants in this area. Take a road trip between Malibu and Cambria and you’ll discover a variety of them, from casual eateries to elegant upscale restaurants, many with knock-out views. Following are just a few delicious choices to consider.

Malibu/Ventura County Line

Neptune’s Net

Described as “an iconic Malibu beach shack,” Neptune’s Net (featured in several films and TV series) has been serving up a wide assortment of seafood, burgers, and their “world-famous New England Clam Chowder” since 1956.

Located across from County Line Beach in Malibu, come here to people-watch while savoring the seafood with the scenic Malibu Coast in front of you. On any given day, tourists, locals, celebrities, surfers, beach lovers, and bikers will be gathering at The Net.

Of course, the emphasis is on seafood. I always order the New England clam chowder (you’ll recognize a pattern in this piece), and their crispy coated, tasty fish ‘n chips. But, whether it’s scallops, clams, mahi-mahi, ceviche, a seafood sampler, or picking up live lobster, Dungeness crab, or shellfish as available, The Net is the place to immerse yourself in Malibu’s unique California coastal scene.

Ventura and Santa Barbara

Brophy Brothers

This family-owned restaurant has two killer locations. As you drive up the coast, stop in at the Ventura or Santa Barbara Brophy Brothers for some calamari, chowder, and fresh catch as available. During the season, the Dungeness crab salad is chock full of fresh, sweet Dungeness meat.

The food may bring you into the restaurants, but the location will bring you back again and again. Both locations are harbor-side, with the docks and bay right outside the windows. Come for lunch, happy hour, or dinner. Brophy Brothers has been a staple go-to destination for almost four decades, for locals and visitors alike. Friendly with an energetic vibe, experience “the Brophy effect” as you seafood your way along the coast.

Brad’s Restaurant

Pismo Beach

Back in the middle of the last century, Pismo Beach was known as the clam capital of the world. Even though commercial and recreational clamming is gone, Pismo still celebrates its past with an annual Clam Festival that began in 1946.

Brad’s Restaurant is an iconic coastal restaurant with roots deep in that Pismo history. Opened in 1956, it is under the ownership of the original founder’s family. Named after Brad Phillips, the current owners (Brad’s daughters and grandchildren) still own and operate the restaurant.

Brad’s is famous for its seafood, barbecue, and clam chowder made from scratch daily. If you are a chowder fan, you must try Brad’s. It’s just the right consistency — not too many potatoes, plenty of delicious clams, and perfect flavoring. Come for a cup but take home a quart!

Order the fish and chips, made from the highest quality wild-caught cod from Alaska. And, when available, the fresh, locally caught halibut and salmon are among the best. You may not actually see the sea from this iconic restaurant, but you can still feel the vibe of the ’50s and ’60s surf scene. Aside from a great menu, servers are super fun and friendly, and echo the decor with surf-themed shirts. Eat at Brad’s and experience this three-generation restaurant!

Windows on the Water

Morro Bay

Cambria

You know there’s something special when you have two seafood specialty restaurants located less than half a mile from each other, each with magnificent Moonstone Beach oceanfront views. When you go to Cambria, try to plan two nights so you can eat more great California coastal seafood.

Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill

is the “newer” of this duo, owned by John MacKinnon and family since opening 31 years ago, in 1993. The menu is expansive with burgers, salads, pasta, and beef, but let’s focus on seafood, which they proudly describe as “Fine American Seafood Dining.”

Seafood is sourced as locally as possible, and you will always find fresh, locally caught fish of the day on the menu. Oysters are flown in fresh from the East Coast, with an eye on quality and size. You’ll find many specials to choose from, but my favorite (especially when it’s crab season), is the Cioppino! It’s zesty, tasty, and full of seafood, shellfish, and lots of sweet Dungeness crab as available. Produce is also sourced from purveyors that focus on locally grown wares, and the hot, mouth-watering bread comes from a local bakery daily.

Sit inside or outside on the well-heated patio to enjoy a straight-on oceanfront view. Having a cocktail and cup of house-made clam chowder while enjoying the flaming sunset courtesy of Mother Nature is hard to beat!

The Sea Chest Oyster Bar

is another Cambria pearl. Originally opened almost 50 years ago, there is a loyal customer and employee base here. The original owners told Steve Kniffen — who started at The Sea Chest back in 1985 — that the restaurant would be his one day. That day happened in January of 2022, and today, Steve, his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and son are all involved in the business. Additionally, several staff members have been there for 15 to 25 years!

As to the bounty of the sea, The Sea Chest specialties include red snapper from Big Sur, wild-caught white sea bass, swordfish, mahimahi — the list goes on. Sit at the oyster bar for oysters sourced from British Columbia, the East Coast, Baja California, and Washington State. Fresh seafood, arriving daily, is what The Sea Chest is known for. And, if you love great calamari, this is the place to go!

The Sea Chest opens at 5:30 pm and does not take reservations. Feel free to bring your beach chair and a bottle of wine (only outside consumption), and get in line. Mingle with other seafood lovers enjoying the vista of the sea while waiting for great seafood along the coast.

A different kind of ROCK SHOW

Rocks, gems, and fossils take over the VC Fairgrounds during Seaside Gems at Ventura Show May 24 to 26

It’s 1944. The U.S. is still very much in the midst of World War II, and a group of Ventura teenagers are looking for something to do. Gas rations restrict them to pedestrian activities, so they walk to the beaches and nearby hills to look for rocks.

They find some pretty cool stuff — turns out, Ventura’s a fascinating place, geologically speaking (check out the photo of brecciated jasper). So they keep it up, growing in numbers and eventually going on field trips, after the war ends.

Thus began the Ventura Gem and Mineral Society. Eight decades after their first meeting in the rumpus room of a friend’s house, the group now has its own clubhouse, as well as monthly meetings and field trips, frequent educational events, annual shows, and members ranging in age from 4 to 90-plus.

This year, VGMS has been chosen to host the Annual Show & Convention of the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies, set for May 24 – 26 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. If that mouthful sounds like a big deal, that’s because it is. The Ventura club was chosen from more than 600 similar nonprofits to host the show, which only comes to California once every seven years. No surprise, then, that the organizers refer to it as “The Super Bowl of gem shows.” Aside from the famous Tucson and Denver shows, it’s among the biggest gem and mineral shows west of the Mississippi.

“Both of those big commercial shows are truly huge — spread out across their respective cities in multiple hotels and venues — and pretty much overwhelming and impossible to take in all at once,” said VGMS member Jim Brace-Thompson. “Our national show (in Ventura) takes place in one convenient venue, giving you a taste of Tucson in a way that’s much more manageable and fun.”

So, what will you find at this near-largest show in the West? Dozens of vendors, over 100 museum-quality exhibits, demonstrations, renowned speakers, and plenty of chances to get hands-on. Because the VGMS takes seriously its role as a nonprofit educational group, you’ll find ample opportunities to learn, especially for kids. Seasoned rockhounds will find an awesome community of likeminded folks, but even rock novices will find row after row of pretty, shiny things to capture their attention.

Bottom line: If you’ve ever picked up a rock and thought, “Oh that’s kinda cool,” plan to be at the Seaside Gems at Ventura show on May 24 to 26. You’ll be in good company, as the show is expected to draw 3,000-plus people over the weekend.

Among the featured displays will be the California Golden Bear nugget — discovered by a young girl in Placer County in 1871 — which is normally housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. Also on display will be samples of the California state gemstone (blue benitoite), the state rock (serpentine), and the state fossil (the saber-toothed cat). But there will also be dozens of other displays from private collections and crafters throughout California and the U.S., many of which will have entered the refereed competition for trophies offered at both the regional and national level. “And those displays will truly be of museum quality,” BraceThompson said.

Although he said he’d be “up to his ears” busy as one of the event organizers, Brace-Thompson said the displays are always one of his favorite parts of these shows. “They always include something you’ve never seen before. And I look forward to the lectures.”

The full lineup is still being finalized, but a few speakers have been locked in. Among the highlights: Luis de los

Santos, speaking on colorful Condor Agates from Patagonia, Argentina; Maxine Dearborn, speaking about amber; Dick Weber, speaking on the DeGrussa Gold & Copper Mine of Western Australia; and Keri Dearborn, who will speak on the geology of the Channel Islands. Talks at past shows have included such topics as gemstones, dinosaurs, petrified wood, meteorites, and agates, so keep an eye on the website as May 24 rolls nearer.

considerable effort into the Kids Booth, with a vast number of educational, hands-on activities (which are either free or “priced to match a kid’s budget”). Among them: a dino dig, a spinning wheel where every spin wins a prize, grab bags filled with rocks and fossils, and a sand-sifting activity. Free teacher resources will also be available. “Plus,” said BraceThompson, “as they enter the show, each child gets to pick out a free polished stone right off the bat from a treasure chest, and each child can also pick up a Scavenger Hunt card to fill in and receive yet another free prize.”

tricks of the trade from the experts if you decide to head out to the hills yourself.

Demonstrations abound, as well. You’ll get a chance to watch lapidary artists turn rough stones into stunning pieces of art, with specialized equipment for carving, polishing, jewelry making, and even fossil cleaning.

Strong, indeed, is the person who can check out all of this and not want to bring home some gems and minerals of their own. To that end, you’ll find 50-plus vendors selling

If you can’t make the May show but still want to learn all things geology, the Ventura Gem and Mineral Society is always looking for new members (yes, you can join even if you don’t live here). If you decide to join, you can jump in on some amazing members-only field trips to find fossils in the Ventura foothills, agates in the Santa Monica Mountains, and to further away places, “particularly into the Mojave Desert and to the Clear Creek District in Central California, and Jade Cove up in the Big Sur region,” Brace-Thompson said. You can also get certified on their clubhouse’s lapidary machinery to cut and polish your finds. But you don’t have to join to learn. Students and educators (and anyone interested, really!) can schedule a time to come to their Ojai clubhouse museum and library. Or, you can be a guest at their regular workshop days on the third Saturday of the month.

Ojai Wine Festival pours out the f�n at Lake Casitas

June event serves up local wine, beer, and spirits in Rotary Club benefit

Wine has been around for a very, very long time. Current findings suggest that it originated in West Asia (modern-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, northern Iran, and eastern Turkey). It is said that as people migrated, it spread through the Mediterranean and then, to the rest of the world. The vitis vinifera, the vine that grows wine grapes, was produced and turned into wine for the first time somewhere around 6000 BC, or so they say. There are still debates about this because new archaeological discoveries are continuously being made, so really, there is still a bit of mystery around this beloved elixir of life.

For the wine lovers out there, there’s good news: the Ojai Wine Festival is coming back to beautiful Lake Casitas on June 15 from noon to 4 pm. This 36th annual event is sure to be another wonderful occasion to try out some delicious wines from all over California. This year, Lake Casitas is fuller than it’s been in a long time — 89 percent of capacity (and still rising as of press time). Combined with verdant hills from the abundant rains, it is bound to be a spectacularly beautiful event.

What is exceptional about this wine festival is that it is a fundraiser, and it raises a lot of money. Every year since 1987, the Rotary Club of Ojai-West has hosted this festival, growing it into a renowned regional fundraising event attracting over 3,000 people. In 2023, the Club donated over $80,000 towards charitable projects and community grants, and since its inception, the Ojai Wine Festival has raised over $1.5 million.

Some great examples of local projects that the Rotary Club of Ojai-West funds include sciencebased field trips for elementary students on the Rotary Floating Classroom.

This will be offered again this year for the attendees of the festival. “It’s a great way for patrons to see what we cover during our science-based field trips for area students,” says Angela May, the executive director of the Ojai Wine Festival. They also fund the Elementary School Dictionary project, educational scholarships for graduating seniors, free familyfriendly summer band concerts at Libbey Park, and The Girl’s Empowerment Workshop.

The wines poured at the Ojai Wine Festival are not normally found at your local grocery store or wine shop. The opportunity to taste amazing wines produced by garagiste vintners – micro and boutique family-owned wineries – and highly respected wine producers from all over California makes the tasting experience a special chance for wine enthusiasts to try wines they have never had before. You will find a vast selection of award-winning wines, as well as craft beers, cider, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages.

This year, Ojai Valley Brewing will be pouring along with many other craft breweries in the area. Local wineries include Majestic Oak Vineyard, Boccali Vineyards and Winery, Flying H Wines, Side Street Wine, Second Chance Ranch Vineyard, and Feros Ferio. Food trucks and food vendors will be serving some delectable options, Doc Lobsta’ and Passion Empanadas are just two of the eight food truck vendors signed up. New and exciting this year is the Stay Wild Cocktail cart that will be serving samples of cocktails from its super cute and fun cocktail cart using Cutler’s Artisan Spirits.

Admission includes unlimited tastes of wine, beer, and spirits, and a keepsake crystal wine glass. Ticket sales are capped at 2,500 and usually sell out.

Area 51, a Santa Barbara-based dance band that knows how to get people out on the lakeside dance floor to boogie. Yes, you read that right: There is a dance floor to get your groove on, with gorgeous views of the lake. Wine Festival goers can also participate in the silent auction and bid on items donated by wineries, sponsors, and craft vendors. Examples of items are fine wines, private tasting parties, VIP tours of wineries, artisan crafts, jewelry, and much more.

As usual, there will be an incredible selection of local artisans and craft vendors at the festival selling their wares. You can purchase handmade jewelry, hand-crafted wood products, wine themed products, clothing, candles, hats, olive oils and balsamic vinegars, leather goods, and wine barrel furniture.

Angela, the festival’s executive director, shared that the Ojai Wine Festival has been a labor of love for the last three-plus decades. “Shortly after the Rotary Club of Ojai-West was formed in 1985, the members, after trying fundraising with a golf

tournament and barbecuing for other groups, decided that they needed a better way to raise funds. Several members had attended the first Paso Robles Wine Festival the year before and thought that it might be worth a try.” The first event was held June 14, 1987. First held at Montessori School of Ojai, the festival then moved to Soule Park. It soon became apparent it needed a new (and larger) venue.

“After a thorough search of the valley, we finally approached Lake Casitas about using the 1984 Olympic Rowing Site as an event area,” Angela said. The site, at the eastern edge of the lake, has remained the home of the Ojai Wine Festival ever since — albeit with a few improvements courtesy of the Ojai Rotary Club of OjaiWest, such as grass, trees, sprinklers, electrical systems, and a phone line.

“We do a lot to help those in need in our community and have fun while we are lending a hand,” said Angela.

Santa Barbara’s GRANADA THEATRE celebrates its centennial year

For much of early adulthood, State Street in Santa Barbara was THE place to go. This was back in the early 2000s, when we spent long nights dancing in very cool clubs (and very short dresses).

I remember that we almost always had to walk past the Granada Theatre to get back to the parking structure. It stood out to me because it was not only the tallest building in town, by far, but it also just felt … steeped in mystery, somehow. And history. What the heck went on in there? And would they ever actually reopen it?

At the time, the Granada was still deep in renovation mode, several years away from its grand reopening in March 2008. To restore and bring it to its current state took more than a quarter of a century of painstaking effort from passionate (not to mention creative, and patient, and innovative) locals and philanthropists. They were determined to bring this historic landmark back — not only to its former glory, but to modify it to fit the needs of several different performing arts groups, and to attract the world-class artists that now fill its rich, diverse calendar.

This year, the Granada Theatre celebrates its 100th anniversary. The festivities kick off this spring and will celebrate the incredible part it has played, and will continue to play, in the history of Santa Barbara.

Interestingly enough, this stunning historic landmark wasn’t built by a famous architect. In fact, when builder Charles Urton took on the project, he’d never constructed anything taller than two stories before. But armed with the confidence his wife inspired in him — and a how-to book on building high rises — he made it happen.

As it turned out, that confidence was well-placed. Just a year after the Granada’s grand opening in 1924, much of the town was destroyed in a 6.3 earthquake; but Urton’s eight-story

building stood tall.

Today, “it remains the tallest building in Santa Barbara,” said Caren Rager, the Chrisman executive director and president at The Granada Theatre. “That’s partly because they didn’t want Santa Barbara to become a New York.” Thus, the

The building was named after Granada, Spain, the “city of dreams,” Rager said. It featured a dazzling 500-light marquee, a re-creation of which graces the building today. Its elaborate decor and 1,553 seat theater wowed visitors — and despite its size, its Spanish-Moorish-inspired architecture helped it fit into the character of State Street. The grand theater occupied the lower two floors, and office buildings took up the rest.

Within a short period of time, the Granada began making its mark on the Golden Age of film — even though it was a good 90 miles from Hollywood. Gone With the Wind was tested there before its

official opening. Same with Guys and Dolls. In the 1930s, the building was purchased by Warner Brothers, which continued attracting big premieres, and big stars, such as Fred Astaire, Doris Day, and Charlie Chaplin.

As the decades rolled by, the Granada was bought and sold a few times. As multiplex theaters became popular, the interior was chopped up into three theater spaces, dramatically changing the original layout.

In the mid-1980s, a new kind of star hit the main stage: the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera. It brought in some big Broadway productions, including Hello, Dolly!, The Music Man, and many others.

Around that time, several performing arts companies came together to form one big nonprofit group: the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts (SBCPA). It was comprised of eight resident companies: Community Arts Music Association of Santa Barbara (CAMA), the Music Academy of the West (now the Music Academy), Opera Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Choral Society, the Santa Barbara Symphony, the State Street Ballet, UCSB Arts & Lectures, and the American Theatre Guild (ATG). All except the ATG are local to Santa Barbara.

that they would then own and operate,” Rager said. Each company had different needs for their venue. And, as they would discover, no existing building had everything they needed. So, would they build from scratch? Or retrofit something existing?

More than a decade went by without much movement, other than some feasibility studies. But, in 1997, “Two women involved in performing arts in Santa Barbara — Joan Rutkowski and Susan Gulbransen — got together and said, ‘We HAVE to make this happen!’” The two local movers and shakers

recruited several friends, professionals, and philanthropists to help revive the SBCPA’s original efforts. More soon joined the mix.

The mission was back in action. But still, the challenge remained of the right location to fit all the companies’ needs. There would need to be just-right (yet flexible) acoustics, special flooring on the stage (which would need to be quite large), ample space to fit a large orchestra, exceptional lighting, up-to-date technology, the ability to show films, excellent dressing rooms, and myriad other things (not the least of which would be accessibility for artists and visitors with disabilities).

of money. But the bones were solid, and the location was ideal. This, coupled with the Granada’s history, were too good to pass up. It would take several years, a monumental effort, and a retrofitting to bring it up to earthquake codes, but in March 2008, it finally reopened its doors to the public.

“We had a grand reopening event, an open house for the community to come see the theatre,” recalled Rager. “Literally thousands of people came through, in lines and lines!”

“The Granada is undoubtedly the most spectacular building in the city of Santa Barbara for performing arts space,” said Celesta Billeci, the Miller McCune executive director at UCSB Arts & Lectures, in a mini-documentary on the building. “I mean, when we bring worldclass performers to this community and they walk into the building, their jaw drops, they look at it, and say, ‘wow!’”

Of course, having such a space helps tremendously in the attraction of those world-class performers. Over the years since its reopening, the Granada has hosted some of the biggest names in performing arts.

Musicians of all varieties have played here — think Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina, Boz Skaggs, the Beach Boys, Itzhak Perlman, and the L.A. Philharmonic. UCSB Arts

& Lectures brought in author and humorist David Sedaris.

Comedian Nate Bargatze (who recently released a Netflix special) performed in 2022. The American Theatre Guild brought in The Book of Mormon (which, not surprisingly, sold out each of its three shows almost instantly). Last fall, they brought in Samara Joy, threetime Grammy winner for her jazz performances. And in a first, Opera Santa Barbara, the State Street Ballet, and the Santa Barbara Choral Society teamed up for Carmina Burana, which put more than 150 performers on the stage for the epic show.

Last season, the Granada’s 19 shows (some of which included multiple performances), were at least 90 percent sold out. “Many were 100 percent sold out!” said Rager. There’s more to come at the Granada — and thankfully, great backers behind it. “We have an amazing Board of Directors,” Rager said, “and an amazingly generous community that helps to support the financial needs of the theatre.”

This spring, the Granada comes full circle to celebrate its centennial. And, in true Granada style, it’s going to be a year-long bash. The kickoff begins in early April, but additional events will continue to be added throughout the year.

The Centennial anniversary weekend runs April 12 to 14. In the line-up:

Old Santa Ynez Days returns to the Central Coast June 21 through 23. Along with the traditional favorite activities of the weekend, this year’s 60th annual celebration also includes several new events for 2024. Established in 1882, Old Santa Ynez Days is a nod to the community’s ranching and agricultural history.

“Old Santa Ynez Days was formerly called Tortilla Days from 1962 to 1974, and included a tortilla toss as one of the activities,” said Linda Small, executive director of the Santa Ynez Chamber of Commerce, organizers of the weekend. “The tortilla toss is still one of the activities today. The name was changed in 1975 to Old Santa Ynez Days.”

Start the weekend off right at the Kick-Ass Kick-Off Party Friday night from 6 to 9 pm at the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum and Parks-Janeway Carriage House. Boogie down to live music and enjoy a Central Coast pig roast barbecue. This museum-sponsored event will feature all the fixins that put this region on the culinary map.

Sagunto Street is the place to be on Saturday morning. Get there early to claim your spot along the sidewalk for the Old Santa Ynez Days Street Faire and Hometown Parade. Once you drop your chairs, stop in at one of the local restaurants for breakfast,

More than just buckin’ broncos, you’ll also find trick riders at the rodeo.

Also larger than last year, the “Touch a Truck” area promises all the big trucks that kids (and, let’s face it, adults too!) love: tractors, tow trucks and even a few specialty vehicles from law enforcement agencies. You’ll find it in the Red Barn parking lot on Edison Street.

Grab lunch downtown then head on over to the Rodeo. It starts at 1 pm Saturday and runs through 5 pm Sunday, and is hosted by the Santa Ynez Valley Western Heritage Foundation. It is a PRCA qualifying event, so you’ll find some of the area’s best riders in the arena. Events include bull riding, saddle

bronc, tie-down roping, barrel racing, break-away, team roping, steer wrestling, and even junior events like mutton busting and stick horse racing. Between events in the arena, enjoy live music and grab food, drink, and local wares. Get your tickets early at syvwhf.org

As a first-time visitor to Old Town Orcutt, I had no idea just how much was truly packed into the five blocks of Clark Avenue. Tasting rooms, breweries, shops, and restaurants — it’s got a little of everything that makes this region so outstanding! The Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association has worked hard to make the community feel intentional to visitors and locals alike.

Founded in 1904, this small Santa Maria Valley town is a super convenient destination right off Hwy 101. And, ideally, it’s situated in the heart of my personal favorite wine region! Perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway, Old Town Orcutt is a must-see stop along the Central Coast.

Kicking off your morning in Old Town Orcutt, you will find plenty of breakfast options. I recommend Jack’s in Old Orcutt. An Orcutt landmark for over 50 years, it’s open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their breakfast items are available all day, and the Chorizo Scramble is amazing. They also have a mouthwatering selection of pies. Don’t miss it for dinner either — I enjoyed one of the best patty melts of my life at Jack’s!

Another tasty option is Kay’s Orcutt Country Kitchen. This family-owned restaurant is open daily for breakfast and lunch. If you are ravenous, try their Orcutt Hash with ham, pork belly, sausage, home-fried potatoes, and melted cheese topped off with bacon and sausage gravy! They also have Mimosas and Bloody Marys if you want to get the party started a little early. And don’t forget dessert, like the decadent Ice Cream Waffle Sandwich. When the sun goes down on Friday and Saturday nights, Kay’s converts to R Bar, which is open for drinks and dinner.

A tempting breakfast or lunch option is Cubanissamo Coffee House & Café. Situated right off the 101 on your way to Old Town Orcutt, it is absolutely worth a stop. It’s authentic Cuban cuisine, right in Orcutt! Jumpstart your morning with a Café Cubano or a Cortadito alongside one of their delicious breakfast items. For lunch, they serve favorites such as Cubano and Medianoche sandwiches, as well as Tostones and Yuca fries. I’m a big fan of their Cuban Chorizo served over yellow rice.

Two things I adore are burgers and falafel, so naturally I love Charlies King Falafel Restaurant for lunch. My plan going in was to order the Falafel appetizer, followed by the Super King Burger. That proved a tad ambitious, and I ended up with the Junior Burger with a side of their signature crinkle fries. They also offer a variety of sandwiches, but don’t forget to try a milkshake!

If you’re looking for baseball and beer, catch a game at Blast 825 Brewery, where you can try house brews such as Bohemian Pilsner and Hazy IPA. Add in favorite dishes like the 825 Nachos and Cowboy Mac & Cheese with tri-tip if you’re hungry.

For sweet treats throughout your Orcutt visit, I recommend stopping at Gina’s Piece of Cake While they specialize in cakes, I love it for a mid-day coffee and cookie break. They have a cozy little

seating nook inside where you can enjoy your selection. Orcutt Bakery is another special place for cakes, cookies, brownies and more. They make custom cakes for special occasions, but the pro move is stopping in for one of their mini cheesecakes!

While exploring Old Town Orcutt, nearly every person I met suggested Pizzeria Bello Forno. I’m happy to report that they were all correct! Originally from Los Angeles, chef/owner Bob Spallino moved to Orcutt 37 ago. Bob has been catering in the area for 16 years and opened the pizzeria in 2017. Pizzeria Bello Forno is all about wood-fired pizza — and they have the perfect oven for the job, direct from Naples (technically, it was shipped to New York in pieces before making its way to Orcutt). While the pizza is obviously the star, other popular items include their Bello Forno six-layer Lasagna, their Famous Angus Beef Meatballs, and the Garlic & Brandy Mushrooms.

I must say that I was thrilled by all the phenomenal Italian options in Old Town Orcutt! Trattoria Uliveto, a lovely, sit-down establishment, is open for lunch and dinner. I recommend starting with the Crostino alla Romana, toasted bread topped with fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, and sage. There are a multitude of pizzas and pastas to choose from, including the Orecchiette alla Pugliese with sausage, broccolini, garlic, and chili flakes. They also have nice patio seating to enjoy the beautiful Orcutt weather.

If you are searching for a taste of that famous Santa Maria Style Barbecue, you must have dinner at the Far Western Tavern Established in the 1950s by the Minetti family, today the tavern attracts locals and visitors alike with its legendary barbecue and welcoming atmosphere. Santa Maria Style Barbecue is rooted in native ingredients and methods first popularized by 19th century rancheros. Far Western Tavern’s menu blends that local barbecue style with other dishes that reflect their family’s heritage in the Santa Maria Valley’s SwissItalian ranching community. The menus include fresh flavors from local farms, ranches, and

vineyards. You can enjoy craft cocktails, draft beer, and a wine list featuring local gems. Menu highlights include the World-Famous Bullseye Steak, Oak Grilled Tri-Tip, and the 1958 Steak Sandwich. By now it’s time to work off all that incredible wine and delicious food at a few select walking trails in Orcutt. Orcutt Hills Trail and Rice Ranch Trail are great options. Both are a little over three miles long with fabulous views and are suitable for all skill levels — perfect for a novice like me! Bonus: they’re dog-friendly (on leash)!

PLAY DRINK

Take advantage of the Santa Maria Wine Trolley, which runs every weekend from late spring to early fall. The trolley stops at a few wineries and includes two convenient stops in Old Orcutt. You can book your tickets in advance or at one of the trolley stops. The round trip is approximately 70 minutes.

Looking to unleash your creative side? Wine & Design is the perfect place to unwind and have fun. They offer a range of affordable public and private paint-and-sip parties for all ages and talent-levels, excellent for a girls’ night out, birthday party, date night, and more. Bring your friends or come by yourself and meet new friends while you enjoy a glass of wine during one of their two-hour classes. They provide the canvases and paintbrushes while a local artist guides you through the evening. You can also bring your own snacks to the classes. Their themed classes include opportunities to paint all kinds of items, from jean jackets to pint glasses!

If your visit falls during the week, the Old Town Orcutt Farmers Market starts in June and falls every third Wednesday of the month through October. These fun events offer fresh local produce, vendors, live music, food trucks, and kid-friendly activities.

Now on to my favorite part of the trip: Enjoying the local beverage options! During my Orcutt adventure, I fell in love with Steller’s Cellar, a wine and beer shop and bar that will celebrate its 2-year anniversary this June. Grab a seat at the bar, relax in their lounge area, or enjoy their dog-friendly patio — all while munching on light snacks including a lovely charcuterie board. Owner Mark Steller is an Orcutt native and shares that his hometown “is like walking into the past.”

If you’re planning a trip a little further along into the year, mark your calendar for the Taste of Old Town Orcutt in mid-September. I am looking forward to this event, which includes small bites, beer and wine tastings, shop discounts, and more. It is a perfect way to experience what Old Town Orcutt has to offer.

Steller’s Cellar carries about 40 California beers, including beer on tap, and over 600 wine labels (mostly local). They even have their own wine label! I was lucky enough to try a flight of their Old Town White (Chardonnay), Old Town Red (Pinot Noir), and Sangiovese, which were all exceptional. For beer people, the Liquid Gravity West Coast IPA from San Luis Obispo is a popular choice. They also offer nonalcoholic options including NA spirits by Lyre’s. Visit all week long to experience their winery tastings on Thursdays, local live music on Fridays, and bottomless mimosas on Sundays. They also host special events throughout the year (I’m especially looking forward to their Pinot Party in November). When I asked Andi Keblesh from Steller’s Cellar what she loves about Old Orcutt, she shared, “Knowing I can walk into any of the businesses here and catch up with an old friend.” That community spirit was palpable in Old Town Orcutt!

I am a huge wine nerd, so I was excited to check out El Viñero Tasting Room. Owner/winemaker/grower Jordan Crabtree, a first-generation wine maker, was born and raised in Santa Maria. He studied viticulture at Cal Poly, then attained his Master’s in viticulture in Switzerland. He works mostly with organically farmed vineyards and believes in being a good steward of the land. El Viñero started in 2018 and their tasting room opened in 2022. I recommend their cool climate Syrah or the 2019 Super G, which is named for not only the unique Graciano/Grenache blend, but also in honor of the family nickname for Jordan’s grandmother. While enjoying a wine flight, you can order from Pizzeria Bello Forno to be delivered to the tasting room. Pizza and wine — heaven!

El Viñero hosts special events throughout the year and has a wine club, so you can be among the first to try their fantastic wines. When asked about his favorite thing about Orcutt, Jordan said, “There is a great sense of community here and the community is working together to make it even better.”

A short walk around the corner, Lark + Sparrow is a vibe! Owner Micaela Buchanan, a seventh generation Santa Maria native, vows to “protect that vibe at all costs.” She shared that she traveled around for a while but found herself back in Orcutt, enjoying the “lack of weather” and that it is in the “best wine region in the U.S.” You will find diverse wine and beer options from all over the world on their menu, alongside unique small-production local wine options. They have great non-alcoholic options too (it is important for them to create an inclusive experience).

Opened in December 2022, Micaela’s goal was to create a place where she would want to hang out. Popular events at Lark + Sparrow include trivia on Mondays and live music on Fridays. On April 20, they will hold a Dolly Parton LookAlike and Lip Sync contest. The (rather risqué) artwork and furniture in the bar are all for sale, so you may walk away with more than just wine when you leave! They do not have any TVs/screens in the bar and discourage the use of devices; they want your experience at Lark + Sparrow to be about communication.

Our next stop is Old Town Wine & Brew. Owners Aimee Snyder and David Alvarado bought the place in mid-2022 and then opened and rebranded as Old Town Wine & Brew in December 2022. It is a bar and bottle shop featuring local wine from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. You can find rotating beer options focusing on micro and craft breweries and highly sought-after beers that you will not find at the grocery store. They have snacks, too, including their popular charcuterie board.

Special events abound here. They host events throughout the week, including live music on Friday nights, karaoke on Saturdays, and Sunday Funday Happy Hours. They offer both wine and beer clubs, and hold monthly beer tastings the third Thursday of every month, as well as “Meet the Maker” events for wines and beers. And I can’t neglect to mention their dog-friendly outdoor patio!

Aimee is an Orcutt native who shared that in the past 5-10 years, she has seen it just get better and better. “It has been great to see the growth and it is awesome to see where it is going,” she said.

Another fantastic Old Town Orcutt beer joint is the Naughty Oak Brewing Company. It’s a great place to enjoy beer flights or pints. They have 12 beers on tap, all brewed on-site. I’m a fan of the Chela, their Mexican Lager. They have trivia nights on Wednesdays and food trucks throughout the week.

Yarn comes in a range of price points, and they have local hand-dyed yarn that you cannot find anywhere else. They even carry yarn from Feederbrook Farm, which is high quality, hand-dyed yarn from Maryland. You can join their “Wool Gatherings” on Fridays and Sundays, which are informal sessions where you can bring your latest project and meet new people. They also offer private lessons, group lessons, and classes — including sweater classes in the colder months. You’ll find people of all ages joining these events, from 11 to 90 and everywhere in between.

In between your food, wine, and beer stops, make sure to check out the shopping scene in Old Town Orcutt. I have not crocheted since I was a child but was inspired to take it up again after visiting Old Orcutt Yarnery. I had the opportunity to meet the owner, Lisa Long, who moved to Orcutt in 1988 and “never looked back.” Old Orcutt Yarnery opened in early 2022 and now sees a steady mix of locals and visitors who come to get everything they need for their knitting, crocheting, or weaving projects. In addition to yarn, they have a wide variety of books, patterns, hooks, and needles. The store sells gift cards for the yarn lover in your life and ships their yarn, so you can order directly from their website.

The Yarnery has become a favorite for knitting and crocheting enthusiasts visiting the Central Coast. Lisa has honed the inventory of the store to exceed customers’ expectations with popular items including yarn from brands such as Berroco and Malabrigo.

Fun fact: I was super cool in high school and took a quilting class. While my quilting career sadly came to an end after only making a few squares, Old Town Quilt shop makes me want to give it another try! You can find anything you would ever need for quilting – fabrics, patterns, batting, and quilting kits, and they also have classes and retreats. Old Town Quilt Shop is even a stop on the Central Coast Quilt Shop Trail.

If antiquing is more your speed, be sure to check out Déjà Vu Antiques. It is owned by Wendy Steller (yes, her husband, Mark, is the owner of Steller’s Cellar) and is truly a piece of Orcutt history. Déjà Vu Antiques is located on “The Loading Dock” that was built in 1906 as the original oil dock for Orcutt. Antique dealers from all around the Central Coast are here, and you can browse the clothing, furniture, jewelry, décor and more. You are sure to find a few treasures! I’m the kind of person who must find the crystal shop in any town I visit — and I found it in Living Energy Crystals & Metaphysical Shop. They have crystals, jewelry, and divination tools. They also offer classes and readings to satisfy all of your mystical needs.

Vintage Room is their bar, with a delightful selection of local wine and beer along with light bites. When staying at Wine Stone Inn, you are within walking distance of everything in Old Town Orcutt. They have a private event space in their wine cellar, and guests can enjoy their outdoor terrace. I spoke with the general manager of Wine Stone Inn, Jason Gentry, and he shared that his favorite thing about Old Town Orcutt is “the quaint nature of the people in the community and history of Old Orcutt.”

STAY

If staying in Old Town Orcutt for a few days (which I highly suggest), then Wine Stone Inn is your spot. Opened in 2019, the Wine Stone Inn is a boutique hotel with 12 well-appointed king and double queen rooms. Hotel amenities include complimentary WiFi, Comphy Co. linens, free parking, afternoon wine tastings for hotel guests, and live music.

Outside of Old Town Orcutt, there are a few other lodging options, such as the historic Santa Maria Inn (which is rumored to be haunted!) and the Skyview Los Alamos, a boutique luxury, dog-friendly property that is less than 20 minutes away.

What struck me during my visit to Old Town Orcutt was how much everyone I spoke with genuinely loves their community! Many of the businesses I visited highlighted their exciting future expansion plans. I am confident you will want to visit Orcutt again and again and will find more to discover with every visit.

One of the most unique shopping experiences on the Central Coast can be discovered at The Village of Arroyo Grande.

The collection of diverse shops and food options draw local residents and tourists alike looking to soak in some Central Coast culture.

The city is located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, in an agriculture-rich region that has an ideal balance of city and small-town vibes. Arroyo Grande is surrounded by coastal foothills, which can look like an oil painting after the spring rains and wildflower blooms. The Village itself is made up of buildings dating back to the early 1900s, which adds a historic, nostalgic flavor to the area. Arroyo Grande also offers golf, various forms of outdoor recreation, community events, music, art shows and much, much more. Essentially, there is something for everyone in Arroyo Grande — especially at The Village.

In talking with visitors, one thing is clear: It takes more than one visit to take in all it has to offer. “We were looking for a place to stretch our legs and grab a quick bite to eat,” said Shelly Halverson of Salem, Oregon. “My husband and I read about The Village and decided to stop. We have been here for more than three hours now and could literally spend all weekend exploring the shops. I

told him that we are definitely going to come back and stay. It has everything we enjoy, like great food, wine, and kind people. We hit the jackpot today.”

The City of Arroyo Grande boasts its core values as “Truth, Excellence, Teamwork, Community, and Impact.” In talking with several business owners in The Village, those same values are quite evident.

June Gonzales, owner of The Sports Dugout, points to the close-knit community of friends and colleagues as something that makes The Village such a special place. Gonzales also noted many other highlights — the troupe of free-ranging roosters that strut around town, the last swinging bridge of its kind in California, and Heritage Square Park, which contains five historic buildings.

Another store owner, Tracy Sonny, displays a passion which makes The Village a true destination for tourists and locals alike. When asked about The Village, the Hive Supply Co. owner said, “We love being located right in the heart of The Village. I mean, what’s not to love?! We have a little bit of everything, like a bakery, guitar shop, dive bar, retail, restaurants, and lots of roosters. I grew up watching the Andy Griffith Show, so I feel like Arroyo Grande is the new Mayberry!”

Hive owner Tracy has created a memorable experience for those who enter either one of her stores. “We’ve created a boutique feel from the minute you hit the front door that looks, sounds, feels, and smells so good. Both men, women, and kids love our store,” she said. The Hive Annex is a muststop for men looking to grab some new clothes or rugged wear. According to the store’s website, “The Annex is here for all your rugged needs; dedicated to men’s apparel and lifestyle goods with the same quality and originality that Hive Supply Co. is known for.”

The Arroyo Grande Swinging Bridge is a must-see piece of California history. The bridge was designed back in 1875 as a way to cross the Arroyo Grande Creek. In 1995, a tree fell on the bridge. It was rebuilt but remains the only bridge of its kind in the state of California. At 171 feet in length, the bridge hovers 40 feet above Arroyo Grande Creek.

If you are in the area on a Saturday, you have to stop by the Arroyo Grande Farmers’ Market. It is located in the Olohan Alley between Short and Mason Streets, in the heart of The Village, and runs from noon to 2:30 pm. Fresh fruits and vegetables are front and center for all to enjoy as are a variety of other vendors. You can also enjoy some live music and get to know the locals. There is also a Wednesday farmers’ market, located a short distance away in the Smart & Final parking lot (1464 E. Grand Ave.) from 8:30 to 11 am.

With the change from winter to spring comes a bounty of fresh oranges, tangerines, and lemons. In Ventura County, you can buy fresh citrus fruits at farmers’ markets in Ojai, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Camarillo, and Westlake Village. I like to buy my citrus from vendors at the Ojai Certified Farmers’ Market and at Friend’s Ranch on Highway 33, northwest of Ojai. In Santa Barbara County, farmers’ markets are held in Santa Barbara, Goleta, Solvang, Carpinteria, and Montecito. In San Luis Obispo County, look for fresh citrus at farmers’ markets in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, Los Olivos, Atascadero, Avila Beach, Cambria, and Templeton.

My Portobello-Orange Salad features fresh Valencia orange sections and grated orange zest. My Tomatillo Salsa Verde recipe is easy to make, refrigerates well, and features fresh lime juice. The Farro, Feta, and Meyer Lemon Salad is my unique combination of chewy farro whole-wheat grain, Meyer lemon juice, feta cheese, and Castelvetrano olives.

My Pixie Tangerine Cupcakes recipe features a delicious carrot cupcake topped with cream cheese and buttercream frosting made with Pixie tangerine zest and juice. And if you wonder what to sip while you cook, I’ve also included my favorite springtime cocktail, Pisco Sour, made with Peruvian brandy and fresh lime juice and garnished with a slice of lime.

This recipe is a refreshingly different vegan salad. Why, you ask, is it different? Combining juicy-sweet Valencia oranges and earthy portobello mushrooms makes it different and oh-so-tasty.

Makes 2 to 3 servings.

Ingredients:

4 large portobello mushrooms (stems and gills removed)

4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil (divided)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 large Valencia oranges

½ teaspoon grated orange zest

2 teaspoons capers (mashed)

2 teaspoons shallot (chopped fine)

Mixed greens (optional)

Directions:

Place four salad plates in the refrigerator to chill.

Brush mushrooms with two teaspoons of olive oil, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Heat a grill or sauté pan over medium-high heat. Brush or rub pan lightly with oil and sauté mushrooms — three minutes per side. Set aside to cool.

While the mushrooms are cooling, trim the ends of one orange and place one end on a cutting board cut side down. Angle a knife to cut between the pith and the pulp to remove the peel. Cut along the inside of the membrane walls to remove sections. Repeat with the remaining orange. Roughly chop both and place in a medium bowl. Add orange zest, capers, the balance of the olive oil, and shallots to the oranges. Set aside.

Slice mushrooms on a bias and cut the slices into 1-inch pieces. Add mushrooms to the orange mixture and gently stir to coat the mushrooms. Take chilled plates out of the refrigerator and place a handful of mixed greens on each plate. Spoon one-fourth of the mushroom mixture on top of each plate of greens. Serve while plates are still cold.

Tomatillos are a hard, small fruit that is a bit tart, yet slightly sweet; earthy, but with a hint of citrus. In other words, they are like nothing else. You may have seen them in the store with green husks and thought they were weird green tomatoes. They are used to make mole, spicy soup, and several other Mexican dishes. I like to use them to make this vegan salsa. Use on enchiladas or as a condiment for any dish that needs a little extra zip!

Makes about 4 cups of salsa.

Ingredients:

16 ounces fresh tomatillos (husked and washed)

1 large yellow onion (cut into large chunks)

3 cloves garlic (peeled)

½ packed cup of cilantro leaves (chopped)

½ jalapeño (de-seed and de-vein if you don’t like the heat)

1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Salt (to taste)

Directions:

Cut the tomatillos into quarters and put them into the bowl of a food processor. Add the onion and garlic and process

until smooth. Add the cilantro, jalapeño, and lime juice and process until the jalapeño is finely chopped.

Scrape the mixture into a saucepan. Season lightly with salt and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid is boiled off and the salsa looks like a fine relish — about 15 minutes. Cool before using.

Note: This sauce can be refrigerated for up to one week. If chilled, you may want to add a little salt and lime juice before serving.

½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

¼ teaspoon Aleppo pepper

Farro is a nutty-tasting ancient grain eaten for thousands of years worldwide. It is a staple in many Mediterranean, Ethiopian, and Middle Eastern recipes. It was once called pharaoh’s wheat because it was popular in Egypt before reaching Italy.

Farro is an excellent source of protein, fiber, and nutrients like magnesium and iron. It’s a big nutritional step up from using white rice or other refined grains in your cooking. But beware: If you are sensitive to gluten, this may not be the dish for you. Farro contains gluten protein and is most definitely not gluten-free.

Makes 2 to 3 servings.

Ingredients:

1 cup farro wheat grain

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

3 tablespoons Meyer lemon juice

2 tablespoons finely chopped Meyer lemon zest (from about 4 lemons)

½ cup fresh parsley leaves (chopped)

½ cup feta cheese (crumbled)

2/3 cup

Castelvetrano olives (pitted)

Salt to taste (if desired)

Butter lettuce

Directions:

Bring four cups of salted water to a boil and stir in farro. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook until just tender, about 20 minutes. Drain and spread out on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Allow to cool and dry a bit, about five minutes.

While farro is cooling, whisk oil, lemon juice and zest, black pepper, Aleppo pepper, and parsley in a medium bowl. Stir in feta, olives, and cooled farro. Serve on a bed of butter lettuce.

These delicious cupcakes are easy to make and have a fresh carrot cake taste. The freshness of Ojai Pixie tangerines from Friend’s Ranch gives the frosting an orange creamsicle flavor. What could be better?

Makes 12 cupcakes.

Cupcake ingredients:

1¼ cups granulated sugar

¾ cup canola oil

1/3 cup buttermilk

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups flour

1½ teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon ground allspice

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup grated carrots (about 2 medium carrots)

½ cup golden raisins

Frosting ingredients:

½ cup butter (room temp)

4 ounces cream cheese (room temp)

1 tablespoon Pixie tangerine zest

16 ounces powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

2 tablespoons fresh Pixie tangerine juice

Cupcake directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners.

Combine the sugar, oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract in a bowl. Combine the flour, baking powder, allspice, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl. Add the flour mixture to the oil mixture and stir until smooth. Fold in the carrots and raisins.

Spoon the batter into the muffin cups and bake for 20 minutes or until golden and the cupcakes are slightly springy to the touch. After removing them from the oven, cool the cupcakes in the pan for five minutes, then transfer them to a rack to cool completely before frosting.

Frosting directions:

While the cupcakes are cooling, beat the butter, cream cheese, and zest with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and tangerine juice, beating slowly until blended. Cover and place in refrigerator for about 30 minutes to get it firm enough to spread. Now for the fun part. Frost the cupcakes and chow down. Be sure to share with friends and family. There should be plenty to go around!

Pisco is a type of South American brandy, and the pisco from Peru has a complex, earthy flavor. The Pisco Sour is the most popular way of drinking pisco, and for decades, it has been the signature mixed drink of Peru. This is the recipe for a Pisco Sour cocktail I enjoyed at a restaurant in the Miraflores neighborhood in Lima, Peru.

Makes 1 cocktail.

Ingredients:

3 ounces Peruvian pisco (Campo de Encanto is a good brand)

1 ounce of fresh lime juice

½ ounce simple syrup

Note:

1 egg white

Cracked ice

1 to 2 dashes Peruvian Amargo Chuncho Bitters

Directions:

Combine pisco, lime, simple syrup, and egg white in a cocktail shaker without ice and seal. Shake vigorously until egg white is foamy, about 10 seconds. Add ice to the shaker and shake hard until wellchilled, about 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and put a dash of bitters atop the egg-white foam.

If you can’t find Peruvian bitters, substitute Angostura Bitters.
