Editor’s Note It’s finally winter! The time when, here on the Central Coast, we love to complain about the “brutal” 60-degree days. A time when we can take a drive to the snow in the morning and watch sunset at the beach in the evening. A time when we can go wine tasting, birdwatching, and skydiving, all in the span of an afternoon. Yeah, yeah, we’re spoiled around here — but hey, with 300odd days of sunshine a year, can you really blame us? CA 101
In this issue we’ve got lots of fun things to do, see, taste, and experience, whether you’d rather hunker down inside, or if you feel up for an outdoor adventure … or a bit of both! See some of the best blooms on the planet at the Santa Barbara International Orchid Festival (PAGE 48). Get your camera ready March 8 through 10 for dozens of varieties of orchids in dazzling displays at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. Taste the best vino Ojai has to offer (PAGE 83). We highlight several tasting rooms, from one end of the valley to the other, and meet the small-town folks behind these fabulous small-batch wineries.
their fab female owners offer much more than pretty rocks. Get outside and hunt down some of the best birding sites on the Central Coast (PAGE 12). From beaches and wetlands to woodlands and chaparral, our area is not only full of natural beauty right now, but also lots of birds you can’t see any other time of year! Explore one of the best-kept secrets on the Central Coast: Lompoc! (PAGE 32) This community offers a rich history (from agricultural to military), great food and drink, and adventures in spades. Rather stay indoors? Chef Randy has some hearty winter recipes that’ll stick to your gut, while also helping you stick to your New Year’s Resolutions to eat healthier! (PAGE 108) Plan ahead for warmer days to come with our round-up of Central Coast Beer Festivals (PAGE 96). Get ready to find your new favorite brews, from specialty lagers to hard ciders in fantastic venues ranging from the beaches of Carpinteria to the Sunken Gardens of Atascadero. What are your favorite winter activities? Let us know!
While you’re up in the Ojai Valley, explore its spiritual side (PAGE 68). Three crystal shops — Nutmeg’s Ojai House, Sorenity Rocks and Crystal Corner — and california101guide.com

Winter birdwatching on the Central Coast offers opportunities to see old favorites and spot new ones
White-crowned Sparrow.
When the days grow short and the weather turns cool, bird watchers look for migrating songbirds, shorebirds, and raptors to appear along California’s central and southern regions. Some remain for the winter, while others stay for just a few days before continuing further south to even milder climes. They need safe places to rest and feed while they gain strength for the next stretch of their migration. Some migrations are hundreds of miles in distance, while others may reach thousands of miles. “The first sign of winter is the arrival of white-crowned sparrows with their very pretty song and large numbers,” observes Don Klabunde, Conejo Valley Audubon Society. “The other early arrival is the yellow-rumped warbler, mostly gray and yellow. Mallard ducks are here all year, but winter is also the time for other duck species.” Photo by Don Klabunde
Yellow-rumped Warbler.
California is located in one of four major migration routes for birds, called flyways. At the western edge of North America, we are part of the Pacific Flyway, extending from Alaska, down along the Canadian shoreline, the length of California, through Mexico and all the way to the southern tip of South America. Heading south when winter temperatures plummet, millions of birds have traveled these routes year after year, century after century to make best use of the abundant food supplies of the northern summers. Flyways are considered Important Bird Areas (IBAs), and they are essential for preserving biodiversity and ecosystem health. California’s reputation as a global biodiversity hotspot is due in part to our location in the center of a major flyway. It’s difficult to imagine how such small and seemingly fragile animals are capable of such incredible feats of physical stamina. It’s one of many reasons for preserving diverse habitats: different birds need different kinds of places to rest and feed.

Winter is the best time to see a variety of species in coastal and inland habitats. There are many bird books and apps available that can help with identification. It helps to bring a pair of binoculars to get a better look at birds in the distance. Plan your next birding adventure to some of these locations. california101guide.com

Coastal Habitats: Beaches, Estuaries, Wetlands, and Lagoons Estuaries are places where freshwater rivers and creeks flow into the sea, forming brackish shallow-water lagoons. As the ocean tides ebb and flow, the mixing of fresh and salt water stirs up an abundance of nutrients. Aquatic plants, insects and small fish thrive in the briny marshes, providing food for millions of birds that come to the wetlands to rest and feed. Wintering bird areas support a colorful mix of seabirds and shorebirds, including brown pelicans, grebes, gulls, cormorants, willets, whimbrels, curlews, and plovers. Migrating geese include brant, Canada geese, and the occasional cackling or Ross’ goose. In the shallow waters, look for waders such as herons and egrets and migratory duck species including widgeons, teals, pintails, buffleheads, and mergansers.

White-tailed Kite.
Wintering waterbirds can be seen in coastal waterways at Point Mugu on the Pacific Coast Highway, Ormond Beach Wetlands in Oxnard, the Santa Clara River Estuary, and the Ventura Ocean Shore Trail. In Santa Barbara, plan your visit to include Coal Oil Point and Devereaux Slough, Santa Ynez River Estuary and Santa Barbara Harbor. In San Luis Obispo County, look for shorebirds at Port San Luis and San Luis Obispo Creek mouth in Avila Beach, the Morro Bay Estuary, and Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in Los Osos.

Inland Habitats: Riparian, Chaparral, Woodland, Lake, and Reservoir
American Robin.
Migrating songbirds seek grasslands, woodlands, and areas that provide abundant food to eat, protective vegetation where they can hide from predators, and fresh water. Parks and wildlife refuges offer this perfect blend for many species. With foliage thinner in winter, birds can be easier to find. Western meadowlarks stand out with Photo by Jamie Chavez vibrant yellow breasts, bifurcated with a sharp black ‘V’ accompanied by their melodic song. Say’s phoebes sit on fence posts, catching insects in midair and flitting back to their vantage spots. Grasslands also provide abundant feeding areas for raptors, including red-tailed hawks, ferruginous hawks, and white-tailed kites. Bald eagles and osprey hunt for dinner over lakes and reservoirs, using their sharp curved talons to snag fish from the water’s surface. Woodlands provide abundant habitat for the colorful northern flicker and acorn woodpecker. Regal cedar waxwings may be seen nibbling on the red berries of native toyon bushes.

Good inland places to look for birds in Ventura County include Santa Paula Canyon and Steckel Park, Lake Casitas and the surrounding areas, and Heritage Park in Thousand Oaks. In Santa Barbara County, Nojoqui Falls County Park is considered a birding hotspot, as are Cachuma Lake Recreation Area and Waller Park in Santa Maria. In San Luis Obispo County, Oso Flaco Lake State Park, Laguna Lake County Park and El Chorro Park offer great opportunities for seeing annual inland migrants and a few unusual ones. california101guide.com

Local Audubon Chapters For more than 100 years, the National Audubon Society has embraced the mission of protecting birds and the places they need. Audubon bird counts use volunteers to collect and record every species of bird they see, from backyards to barnyards and beyond. It’s the nation’s longest-running community science bird project, and anyone can participate. Local chapters of The Audubon Society can be found throughout the US and provide comprehensive and accurate information about where to see and learn about birds. Local chapters offer opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to learn about local and migrating species and participate in habitat restoration projects. Websites usually offer maps and directions to birding hotspots and advice on what to look for. To learn more about winter birding areas, visit these Audubon Society Chapter websites and affiliates: california101guide.com

Living La Vida Lompoc
By Nicole Leonetti
I have been lucky enough to visit Lompoc a number of times in my never-ending search for wonderful wines. Recently, however, I was eager to take a deep dive into all things Lompoc, and am excited to report that, while the wine is indeed phenomenal, there is much more to Lompoc! This Santa Barbara County community has a deep and fascinating history. It gets its name — meaning lakes or lagoons — from the native Chumash people, who have inhabited the region for thousands of years. In 1787, the La Purísima Mission was established, radically changing the area forever. More change came in the 1940s, when a U.S. Air Force Base opened in Lompoc (later named Vandenberg Air Force Base). At that time, the city began to grow rapidly to provide housing for thousands of civilians and contractors employed at the base. Lompoc is now a thriving community where you can watch a rocket launch, go to the beach, sky dive, and drink iconic wine all in the same day! You can go for a day trip, but I much prefer a full weekend to explore the heart of Lompoc. By the way, did I mention Lompoc’s near perfect Mediterranean climate? 32

EAT Starting out a day in Lompoc, I highly recommend breakfast at American Host Restaurant, Photo by Nicole Leonetti where you can enjoy their delicious waffles and Cheery, tropical decor at Coastal Grindz Café. omelets in a sit-down setting. If you would rather start your day on the go, then choose Coastal Grindz Café, a cozy, tropical-themed café, where you can grab an assortment of beverages, breakfast sandwiches, and treats. They have a great English muffin sausage sandwich, and also offer a variety of rotating specials. You may want to pick up some rations to take with you on your adventures. You can visit Capulín Eats & Provisions, located in the Santa Rita Hills Wine Center, for an assortment of breakfast favorites such as the El Barrio Burrito (eggs, cheddar, potatoes, black beans, and salsa verde cream cheese). You can also snag a few sandwiches for lunch, such as the Short Rib Barbacoa Sandwich with slow cooked, juicy barbacoa, provolone, arugula, and roasted garlic aioli on toasted ciabatta. Alternatively, Bread Board Deli is perfect to create your own picnic with sandwiches to take with you to the beach or a winery. Their Chicken Tinga Sandwich is a favorite! For those of you with a bigger appetite for food (and adventure), find your way to the Lompoc Taco Trail! I love sampling tacos at popular taco spots such at The Birria Boyz, Taqueria Don Tacho, El Toro Bronco, and Photo by Nicole Leonetti Taqueria La Mision. If you are lucky enough to be in Lompoc on a Friday night, check out Food Truck Fridays located on South I Street from 5 to 8 pm. On a recent visit, I enjoyed incredible Filipino faire from SaRRRap, delicious pizza from LouBirds, and cheesy birria tacos from AR Catering. Right next door you can grab a beer or two at COLD Coast Brewing Company, where you can bring your food truck grub and wash it down with their Hang 11 - Tropical IPA.

original mission buildings, now fully restored. La Purísima is the only California mission with hiking trails — 25 miles of them! Speaking of hiking, Lompoc boasts an array of hiking trails such as Bodger Trail (also known as Lookout Point) which is only a five-mile drive from downtown Lompoc and offers
A few more options include Old Town Kitchen & Bar, open for both lunch and dinner, it is a familyowned restaurant beloved by locals. They have a BBQ smoked tri-tip burger that’s to die for. I did not expect to find authentic British fish & chips in Lompoc, but over at Alfie’s Fish & Chips, they have been frying up this specialty since 1969! Finally, Valle Eatery + Bar, located at the Hilton Garden Inn, is open for lunch and dinner and has hearty favorites such as the Valle Pork Belly Sandwich and a bone-in ribeye.
P L A Y Now for the fun of Lompoc! I suggest starting the day at La Purísima Mission. The mission is part of the larger La Purísima Mission State Historic Park, and is an opportunity to step back in time to the 1800s. You can learn about the history of California’s 11th mission while also taking in the wildlife, plant life, and hiking trails along the way. Make sure to visit the state-of-the-art visitor center, which features displays and artifacts from the early days of the mission. There are guided tours (check with the visitor center for times), or you can take a self-directed tour to explore the 10 34

sweeping views of the city. Bodger Trail is a favorite among locals for those views, as well as the abundance of seasonal wildflowers that you may see along the trail. Just make sure to stretch first since it is a bit steep, yet worth the 1.5-mile round trip trek. For more mellow sight-seeing, one of my favorite activities in Lompoc is exploring the Murals of Lompoc. The Lompoc Mural Project started in the late 1980s, and as a result, you can find beautiful murals scattered around downtown that depict scenes of Lompoc’s heritage, flower industry, historic sights, ethnic diversity, scenic beauty and more. The Lompoc Mural Society focuses on restoring older murals while commissioning new ones. Once you know about the murals of Lompoc, you will keep seeing more popping up throughout your visit. Another thing to keep an eye out for: rocket launches! You may want to plan your trip to Lompoc to coincide with one of the SpaceX rocket launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base. You can look up the rocket launch schedule online and plan accordingly to find a good viewing location prior to a launch window.

I, however, will keep my feet firmly on the ground — likely at a winery or tasting room. Lompoc has a great mix of small boutique wineries and large estate vineyards. You may have heard of the Wine Ghetto of Lompoc where you will find, tucked inside an industrial park, some of the greatest wines around. Wineries such as Flying Goat Cellars, Fiddlehead Cellars, Ampelos Cellars, Chanin Wine, and Sweetzer Cellars have tasting rooms in the Ghetto. Also at the Wine Skydive SB supplies everything you need: the suit, training, Ghetto is Camins 2 Dreams, and even oxygen. Working on a flight at Camins Now, if you are seeking thrills instead of relaxation then look no further than Skydive Santa Barbara. I must admit that I have not been brave enough to skydive on my visits to Lompoc, but I chatted with Skydive Santa Barbara owner David Hughes to get some insight into the world of skydiving. David shared that what makes their jumps unique is that they have ocean views on both sides. When I asked David what made skydiving so special, he said it is “all about the challenge.”

of the finest Syrah you can find. When asked what makes Lompoc so special, Camins 2 Dreams Tasting Room Associate, Pauline Fetters, shares, “The sense of community in Lompoc is something I have never experienced anywhere else.”
You must also visit the Lompoc Wine Factory, which is a co-op style wine facility that offers individual winemaking, production, and custom crush services. I recommend a tasting at Civilization Wine Company during your visit where owner-winemaker Kris Beverly is pouring his heart and soul into the wines. “I chose to produce Civilization Wines in Lompoc due to its history of making world-class wines in a community that still has a classic, collaborative environment,” Kris shared. “Producers here tend to help each other succeed, rather than seeing each other as competition.” While he has an array of wines to choose from, I am especially partial to the Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir.
Near the Wine Ghetto, you will find Sandhi Wines, a small winery led by winemaker Sashi Moorman in partnership with Rajat Parr — two legends in the wine world. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time for their Private Wine Cellar Experience. They will greet you with sparkling wine, lead you through the winery to see the journey of their wine from the grape’s arrival all the way to the bottle, and explain how everything Photos by Nicole Leonetti along the way translates to what Kris Beverly, owner-winemaker at Civilization Wine Company. you ultimately taste. LaBarge Winery offers exclusive wine tasting experiences where you can bask in the glory that is the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. They specialize in Pinot Noir, Grenache, Syrah, Albariño, and Viognier. Also within a 10-minute drive from downtown Lompoc is The Hilt Estate, which is comprised of three estate vineyards just miles from the Pacific Ocean. Make sure to book well in advance for their seated tasting or library tasting options. At The Hilt, winemaker Matt Dees is passionate about making wine in what he considers to be one of the most exciting wine regions in the country. Don’t forget to make a little time for some shopping. You will find an eclectic variety of shops in Lompoc, such as the Lompoc Antique Mall, The Garden Shoppe, Flower Valley Country Store, and Surf Connection, just to name a few. For a totally different experience, check out Certain Sparks Music. Certain Sparks (which, by the way, is in close proximity to some of my favorite murals) is a music shop that has a recording studio, music lessons, and retail space. Here you can find everything from $5 vinyl albums to vintage instruments. Owner Randall Sena, a Lompoc native, is a selftaught musician. Certain Sparks offers both child and adult lessons in guitar, bass, drums, ukeleles, piano, and violin. When asked why he originally wanted to start his business in Lompoc, Randall said it was important to him to “Grow where you come from … it’s just a charming community.” Certain Sparks has employees who have grown with the store; one manager started music classes there when she was in 6th grade! Randall credits the staying power of music to the store’s success. “You cannot have a thriving city without a music scene — music has the opportunity to bring people together.” Certain Sparks is located in the Rudolph Building, which is a historic building in Lompoc originally built in 1894. It is also next to the South Side Coffee Co, which is a perfect spot for a mid-day caffeine break.

S TA Y There are plenty of hotel options in Lompoc; there are 11 hotels here, ranging from economy to higher-end options. Lompoc is all about great location and value. You can get incredible bangs for your buck staying in Lompoc! For hotels, you will find a comfortable Embassy Suites where you can relax by the pool and enjoy their pet friendly rooms. There is also a Hilton Garden Inn which houses the aforementioned Valle Eatery + Bar. At O’Cairns Inn & Suites, you can enjoy a cooked-to-order breakfast at their charming, family friendly hotel.
For a bit of an adventure, you can book a farm stay at Dare 2 Dream Farms. There you can stay in a farmhouse, an Airstream, or try your hand at glamping in their camper. You can also see their farmers in action, meet their free-range animals, and enjoy the fresh air of farm living. No matter where you go in Lompoc, it’s sure to surprise and delight you. Recognizing this, a group of locals formed the group Explore Lompoc nine years ago to help promote this well-kept secret of the Central Coast. Board member (and one of the group’s founders) Paul Patek summed it up with his favorite aspects of the community: “I just love the area … rolling hills, beautiful hikes, bike trails. It is a well-rounded experience with something for everyone!”

FLOWER POWER: SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL ORCHID SHOW
By Nicole Leonetti Photos courtesy of SBIOS
Flower fans, rejoice! The Santa Barbara International Orchid Show is returning to the Earl Warren Showgrounds March 8 through 10. For the 76th year, this “Disneyland for gardeners” will attract thousands of orchid aficionados for a truly extraordinary experience. And as the largest and longest-running orchid show in the United States, one would expect nothing less. This iconic Santa Barbara event has hosted celebrity patrons over the years including the likes of Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep, and even Mamie Eisenhower back in the day. Current show president Lauris Rose first remembers coming to this show as a little girl, when she snapped countless photos of the displays. The Santa Barbara native returned year after year, developing such a passion that she and her husband James eventually purchased the renowned CalOrchid Inc. Joining Lauris is Olivia Sorgman, who is taking over the reigns as the new show manager this year. Together, they’re bringing fresh ideas to engage the next generation of orchid lovers. But you don’t need to know your Cymbidium from your Dendrobium, or your Chocolates from Lady Slippers, to enjoy the many things to see and experience at the show. In the immersive display area, local, regional, and international floral artisans create unique, themed floral arrangements and corsages. Many local orchid societies have 48

california101guide.com
display booths as well. Walking through the display area, “You feel like you are in a fairytale. It is a place to find peace,” said show manager, Olivia. The theme this year is “Floral Gems of Nature,” and organizers are anxiously waiting to see how the show participants will interpret the theme. Elaborate orchid displays will be located indoors in the main Exhibit Pavilion, with vendors in the adjacent building. While you can’t touch any of the plants, you are encouraged to take pictures — and bring your pocketbook, because thousands of blooming orchid plants will be available for purchase at the show, at a wide range of prices. There is a Plant Hotel provided free of charge for visitors, where you can keep your plants safe while you explore all the exhibits. There is also a juried exhibition of orchid-themed fine art and photography, highlighting the work of local and regional artists. Some exhibitors hail from as far away as Japan, Ecuador, and Thailand. Part of the allure for show participants is the prestige that comes from the awards, ribbons, and trophies given in a wide variety of categories, from “Best Display” to my personal favorite, the “Best Boldly Spotted Cymbidium.” To be considered for a prize, plants must be nursery grown. The orchids are
judged on a variety of qualifications such as color, shape, and breeding. Many regional exhibitors, such as Cal-Orchid, Westerlay, Orchids Royale, and Zuma Orchids, have been participating in the show for many years. If you do happen to be a gardener — or just aspire to be one — this show has you covered, too. While they are certainly stunning, it’s not exactly easy to grow orchids. “People love the challenge — it’s an accomplishment to grow orchids,” Olivia said. Healthy orchids bloom every eight months, and blooms last much longer than cut flowers. Each day you’ll find demonstrations on how to raise healthy orchids, and how to repot orchids, too, because the plants can have trouble thriving when not in the proper pot. They’ll even have an “Orchid Doctor” on hand to answer any questions you have on orchid care. From a scientific standpoint, with all of the hybrid possibilities, there are always new orchids to discover. Show president Lauris noted that orchids are “Constantly evolving … if you are into breeding orchids, you keep going. It is an investment of time to see them go from seed to flower — but it keeps propelling you.” So why Santa Barbara for an international orchid show? As it turns out, Santa Barbara has an ideal climate for pretty much everything — including growing orchids. The region is an especially big market for cymbidiums, and there are a number of well-established growers in the area. The camaraderie in the orchid community is infectious, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by both professionals and windowsill warriors here at the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. california101guide.com

If you really want to dive into the world of orchids, you can sign up for the Show’s newsletter, join a local orchid society to meet fellow orchid enthusiasts, and check out the California Orchid Trail (californiaorchidtrail.com). You can visit the nurseries on the trail, which run from Santa Barbara to Carpinteria to Malibu. Some are open by appointment only, but many open their doors on Show weekends to welcome the influx of orchid fans. When I asked whether an orchid novice like me would enjoy the show, Olivia answered, “It just feels magical to experience all of the flowers in bloom at the same time … it’s very meditative.” Lauris responded without hesitation, “This show will restore your equilibrium.” I’m sold! You will find me at the show in March – desperately seeking answers to how to keep my orchids alive. Join me and soak up the orchid vibes in Santa Barbara this March. Tickets are available online or at the box office during show hours. Come for one day or purchase a three-day pass for just $10 more. I suggest making a weekend out of it, as the event is sure to be fun for the whole family! Ojai is renowned for its special energy and spiritual undertones. Many stories have been told about the healing energy that Ojai and its famous vortex exude.

Winter 2024
But this is not yet another story about Ojai. Instead, we focus on three local women — Aleta Parrish, owner of Sorenity Rocks, Kara Bauer, owner of The Crystal Corner, and Meg Goodwin, owner of Nutmeg’s Ojai House — and their crystal shops. It is interesting that Ojai is known for its feminine energy, and that all of these shops are owned by women. All of them believe, as many ancient peoples did, that crystals are a sacred and powerful tool for healing from deep within Mother Earth. There is documented use of crystals as far back as Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, in Ayurvedic traditions in India as well as Ancient Greece and Rome. Crystals are known conductors of frequencies that absorb and emanate energy to help us to heal, to tap in and feel soothed, grounded, and guided. Different crystals hold different energy, and all three proprietors have noticed that people seem to be organically drawn to the crystals that hold benefits for them, without even knowing it. That’s the magnetic power of crystals, their innate intelligence and connection to us — and why they have been used for healing for thousands of years. california101guide.com

Aleta Parrish moved to Ojai when her friend and now business partner, Lenise Soren, owner of Sorenity Rocks in Malibu, asked her to take over the store at the little yellow house here in Ojai. “Without even walking into the front door, I said ‘Yes’ right away,” Aleta says. “I feel like Ojai pulled me in, and I instantly knew I was going to live here. The land here is sacred with its powerful vortex, and to be able to be a part of it and to bring all these powerful crystals that amplify this beautiful energy, to be able to offer them to this land, to this property, to this town, is very special to me.” Aleta’s store is so beautiful that it almost takes my breath away when I walk in. Honoring her environment is very important to her, so the feel of her store is “Ojai-centric,” which she explains is a mix of Native American, Boho chic, rancho, and cowboy — that laid-back, but elegant, Ojai feel. Here, you will find artful and unique home decor pieces, many handmade by Aleta, and california101guide.com
a vast inventory of crystals of all sizes with some of the biggest crystals I’ve ever seen. Aleta often gets crystals from long-time collectors who bring in crystal estates to sell. She also has direct connections to mines from 50 countries, so she knows how the crystals are sourced. Aleta loves searching for the unusual and helping people find just the right crystal for them, whether small or large. “I really love that people can come here and bathe

in the energy of these beautiful crystals. That’s really the main reason that we are here,” she says. Sorenity Rocks offers more than just crystals, however. The store also has a dry flower bar with gorgeous vases to choose from, so you can either make your own arrangement or have one made for you. You’ll also find great gift ideas, sacred sage and crystal bundle sets, and “crystalized” succulent vases. She takes immense pride in what she creates, in the feel of the store and her new line, Love, Ojai, which is a reflection of the style and vibe you’ll find in Sorenity Rocks.
Stunning amethysts of all shapes and sizes.
Aleta is not a designer by trade but by vocation, and every corner of the store reflects her natural gift for beautification. As part of the business, she also offers design and decorating for your home, office, or any other space. Aleta is currently in the process of expanding the shop over the next year. “We will be creating a healing community space with an expansion of the side area into a beautiful patio and outdoor space to host events like sound baths, educational talks, Tarot readings, classes, and small catered parties.” She adds, “The idea, once it is all set up, is to have people come here and linger and have a cup of tea and listen to a meditation, a place to come and BE in the energy of the crystals and find comfort and healing.” Find Sorenity Rocks at 900 W. Ojai Ave. For more, call (310) 589-7625.
Originally from Seattle, Kara Bauer found her way to Ojai after traveling extensively and living in several big cities around the world. She had always dreamt of having a 70

healing community space, but it wasn’t until she came to Ojai that the dream finally seemed to take root. “I came to see Ojai, invited by a friend, and just a few weeks later I moved here,” she says. “Everything was easy, and I know that when things are flowing and seem to align without much mental planning, it’s a confirmation from Spirit that you are on the right path.” Hence, The Crystal Corner was birthed, at the corner of Ventura and Matilija streets. Kara is a healer, and her passion for all things in that realm is palpable. She has a master’s degree in transpersonal psychology with an emphasis on spiritual psychology, and she has studied many different healing modalities. She is also a health and wellness coach. She had remarkable success selling crystals with her online company, Crystalya, but has since sold it to focus on her dream of creating a crystal store and community healing space. When you walk into to The Crystal Corner you will be met with an elegant, open and light-filled space, with an incredible array of crystals, jewelry pieces, books, Tarot card decks, and spiritual accessories of all kinds. You can also get a variety of readings and services here, such as 15-minute Chakra readings, starseed and

sound healing sessions, Tarot readings, psychic readings, Akashic records, human design, I Ching, and dream analysis. Walking into this space, visitors often say they feel an instantaneous shift in energy, a complete relaxation of the nervous system. art, and other products at The Crystal Corner.
“The crystals,” she explains, “are a very important aspect of all that I offer. They hold specific frequencies and emanate positive energy that activates healing. They’re an amplifier of energy — a bridge, if you will, and so conducive to healing.”
Description cards at The Crystal Corner can help you pick out just the right piece. california101guide.com
Taylor, Kara’s manager who is also a healer, says visitors often comment on the energy they feel in the shop. “It’s so powerful that sometimes people get teary unexpectedly as they have spontaneous releases. The frequency and beautiful energy that emanates from the crystals bathes you with a sense of connection and safety so you can let go, and to me it feels sacred, it is very much akin to a temple space,” Taylor says. There must be something to it, because The Crystal Corner won the of Best of Ojai award in 2021 and 2022. And it’s about to get even better, with expansions on the horizon for this lovely shop in the works. They will be offering educational classes and more spiritual community offerings of all kinds in the near future. Find The Crystal Corner at 201 N. Ventura St. For more, visit thecrystalcornerojai.com or call (805) 272-8402.
Meg Goodwin, owner of Nutmeg’s Ojai House, is one of the most compassionate and kind human beings I have ever met. She really cares about people, her community, and the planet; her beautiful energy pervades her whole shop and sets the tone.
A slice of the many crystals on offer at Nutmeg’s.
Nutmeg’s Ojai House has been a downtown fixture since 2000 — and many would agree the same could be said for Meg herself. When entering the store, you’ll be met with eclectic and beautiful objects all around: sacred statuary, spiritual art, singing bowls and journals, wind chimes, candles, knickknacks, salt lamps, and great gifts of all sorts. In the next room is an extensive array of crystals, and almost every corner of the room has something for the eye’s delight. Jewelry, Mala beads, Tarot cards, essential oil sprays, and political satire to balance it all out. Visitors often laugh as they read a funny card or bumper sticker. The energy here at Nutmeg’s is vibrant and jovial, and, at the same time, spiritually enhanced by the powerful energy that comes from the crystals and the stately 400-year-old oak tree in the back patio. The shop also has a room for Tarot and astrology readings, which is filled with more crystals, statuary, and sun catchers with multi-colored crystals hanging in the window that splash rainbow colored light everywhere. It’s a perfect space for readings. 72
Winter 2024
Step out the back door, and you will find a large and beautiful patio filled with garden art and statuary, from Buddhas to gargoyles, and of course, the expansive ancient oak. The tree is so big that it almost canopies the whole back patio. Everything I have heard about the tree feels true — it infuses me with a sense of peace and belonging as I sit under it and add my story to the many told of this tree’s energy. Although not quite as old as the tree, the shop has its own fascinating history. Built in 1914, it was once a house and has had several additions in the century since. “The upstairs was added on in the ‘70s by a Druid man who built the skylights so that the solstice and the equinox moons would go right over them,” Meg says. The house needed a lot of work, and she recalls being rather daunted by the task at hand. But looking around this upstairs part of the property she realized, “Oh my God, I can see that oak tree from every window.” And in the quiet and awe of that moment, she heard a voice that said, “Buy it, you’re going to be okay.” Meg is not a psychic, and had never had any experiences like that before, but in that instant, she knew it was the tree communicating with her, and california101guide.com
she knew the voice was right. Her eyes light up when she speaks of her love and enduring relationship she has with the magnificent oak tree. “Everyone feels its healing energy and power, and it draws people in. Just sitting under that tree is so healing.” Meg claims that she didn’t come to Ojai for the spirituality; she loved the Nutmeg’s majestic 400-year-old peace and oak tree shades the back patio. quiet and beauty here, and the spirituality found her. She had never had a Tarot reading or an astrology reading before moving here. In 2002, a friend approached her and asked if she would be interested in carrying crystals and having readings there.
Garden decor and statuary at Nutmeg’s.
A week later she went to a gem show and fell in love with crystals, and she has had crystals and readings in her store ever since. And more is to come, including an expansion of the back patio for spiritually oriented community events, and two more wheelchair accessible rooms for readings. “I’m turning it into a community healing space, as it was always meant to be, a place where people can come and relax, sit under the tree and possibly get pertinent information that helps them on their path, with either a reading or healing session,” Meg says. “A place that people can come heal and possibly awaken.” Nutmeg’s Ojai House is at 304 N. Montgomery St. For more, visit nutmegsojaihouse.com or call (805) 640-1656. In talking with all of these ladies, I realized that there’s a spiritual renaissance happening in Ojai. These shops are run by heart-centered people who understand the power of the healing vortex that is Ojai, and want to positively contribute to it. They are all very passionate about creating community healing spaces, with the powerful crystals at the heart of it all. They all felt guided and pulled into Ojai and they used their intuition and their hearts to allow things to fall into place more easily than they could have ever planned it. This is certainly a shift of perspectives from our world, it’s a more feminine way of moving through our lives, and if we can attune ourselves to following what we cannot hear with our ears, but can sense with our hearts, we find that that is where the “magic” happens. california101guide.com

OJAI: Wine Destination Gem
By Don Sonderling
The charming town of Ojai (meaning “Valley of the Moon” in the Chumash language), is less than a 30-minute drive from Ventura, up Highway 33. For the better part of a century, Ojai has been known for its healthy lifestyle, food, agriculture, art, music, recreation, wellness — and yes, wine! For the wine explorer, it’s time to visit this “other” wine destination. Here are a few tasting rooms to explore: Photo by Misty Hall

Feros Ferio Winery is simply an experience not to be missed. As owner Nigel Chisholm says, “When people come in, they are happy, Photo by Dean Zatkowsky when they leave, Nigel’s famous piano. they are happier. I am in the experience business, and I want everyone to have a great experience.” And indeed, they do! Photo by Misty Hall
Boccali’s has great views from every angle — particularly the Topa Topa Mountains from the lawn area.
Boccali Vineyards and Winery, at Boccali’s Pizza and Pasta, is a great “go-to” where you can enjoy fine wine and delicious pizza. Sit, sip, relax, and enjoy the pastoral outdoor tasting spaces with fabulous views. You’ll be welcomed as family, and the wines you will enjoy are made by father-and-son winemaking team Mario and DeWayne Boccali. Dedicated to farming, grapes come from the Boccali Estate Vineyards in the Upper Ojai Valley.
From the moment you walk into this eclectic tasting room in the heart of downtown Ojai, you can’t help but have a smile on your face. There is an assortment of seating, from high tops to tables and chairs, and a table for two at the front window where you can people watch. But there’s plenty to look at inside, too: The
Once seated in the relaxing outdoor area, enjoy a flight of six wines, which may include Boccali’s Grenache Blanc, Rustic Red Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Topa Topa Syrah plus other selections on the tasting menu. Any visit to Boccali’s would be incomplete without a meal at their legendary restaurant! This local favorite has been family owned and run since 1986 and serves up fresh Italian fare with produce fresh from the Boccali Ranch in the Ojai Valley. The winery/tasting area is only open on weekends and may occasionally be closed due to special events (or weather), but you can taste the wines anytime at the restaurant which is open 7 days a week. Find Boccali Vineyards and Winery at 3277 E. Ojai Ave, and at boccalivineyards.com.

art on the walls, sculptures on and under the tables, to the 110-year-old piano which was refinished and painted whimsically like a hippy 1960s VW bus. Even the bathroom is Art Deco! If you happen to be a Malbec fan, be certain to go home with a bottle of the Dùne Malbec (yes, I did)! Nigel is most concerned about your having a good time, and as he
says, “If you like the wine, then it’s a good wine.”

Nigel has made three trips (and is planning a fourth) as an independent individual to volunteer in Ukraine. And he is not volunteering for “fluff” roles. If he has time to tell you his story, you will learn about his Vitali Red Blend — and have a Kleenex ready, because this wine is named after one of the Ukrainian fallen. In his memory, 20 percent of all sales of the Vitali go directly to Ukraine. Make Feros Ferio a destination to sip, enjoy the art, the fun, the laughter, the music (from 4 to 6 pm on weekends).

your cares and stresses evaporate. Owners Tara Coble and her winemaker husband Andrew have created a perfect space that feels far away from its downtown location. Situated below street level, the patio is shaded by vines and a tree canopy, where you can enjoy a flight, a glass, or a bottle of wine. On the day I was there, it was just so pleasant sitting on the patio, talking to Tara as she told us about their history with wine and winemaking, and about the wines themselves. During our visit, we tasted a selection of five wines. However, it was the Sauvignon Blanc that stood out for me on that warm, end-of-summer day. Crisp and bright, the tasting menu described it as “easy peachy lemon squeezy.” With great acidity, this wine had layers of not only lemon, but grapefruit, green apple, and tropical fruits and was simply just fun, zippy, and so enjoyable! It was the perfect wine, blending so well with the weather and ambiance. In her quest to help educate others about wine in a fun, casual, relaxed manner, Tara created a wine website, which includes free online Zoom tasting experiences (thatwinelady. com). And, when you’re in town, set aside time to relax and enjoy a selection of enticing wine varietals and the friendly, knowledgeable hospitality of the staff at Majestic Oak Vineyard tasting room and patio. no surprise that The Naturalist (first released in 2001) has the distinction of being one of (if not the) first certified organic wineries in Southern California. Sourcing only from vineyards that are certified organic and sustainably farmed, they are committed to making natural, pure, organic wine. During production, additional steps of lab testing and obtaining USDA certification are taken to guarantee all the health-focused qualities. Focusing on every detail, even their water cups are biodegradable, no shortcuts are taken here with their commitment to the environment. Winemaker/owner Sam Tulberg’s tasting list at this downtown spot changes seasonally, based on what is aged properly and ready to bottle and pour. On a recent visit, the tasting menu included a Sauvignon Blanc, Mourvèdre Rosé, Sangiovese, and Merlot. However, other varietals you will find as the seasons change will include Reisling, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. As the saying goes, “variety is the spice of life,” and this variety of wines will spice up your life! “The brothers” Josh or Aaron will generally host you, and while they pour will share with you their knowledge of what it takes to produce wines of distinction — all while staying true to their responsibility of creating a variety of wines that are held to the highest of standards.

The Ojai Vineyard was started by Adam in 1983 and has been flourishing ever since. Its current tasting room sits on South Montgomery Street, just off Ojai Avenue. Here you will get a true taste of Santa Barbara wines and terroir. Adam crafts over two dozen wines each year, all small lots, mostly single varietals, and has hundreds of library wines available for purchase. In addition to wines made from estate grapes, Adam sources from the most acclaimed vineyards in the area, such as Solomon Hills, Bien Nacido, Fe Ciega, Duvarita, and Sebastiano to name a few. Adam’s almost 50 years in the industry making wines have garnered him consistently high scores and reviews from the wine industry. Relax in the tasting room and give your palate a treat with various vineyards of Santa Barbara County. You’ll enjoy such elegant wines as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah, plus many others. With so many highly regarded smallproduction wines, the tasting menu will change about every two months so keep coming back to explore. Also check the website for special library tastings, after-hours events, and other special tasting events. Find The Ojai Vineyard at 109 S. Montgomery St, and at ojaivineyard.com.

Buellton Brewfest pretzel necklaces: helpful and stylish!
California’s Central Coast is home to some of the best beer festivals on the planet. Widely known for its wineries, the Central Coast also offers a diverse range of beer, ciders, and spirits, and there are plenty of festivals and celebrations for them all. These
celebrations offer a fun-packed day whether you are a true beer lover or a novice taster. Ignacio Garcia of Santa Barbara is a regular attendee of the festivals on the Central Coast, and he loves trying new beers and meeting new friends. “Our local beer festivals are a great time if you have never gone to one. We have so many wonderful breweries in the state of California and the festivals are fun social events. I have met so many new friends over the years thanks to our common affinity for beer and good times,” he said.

Lagerville crowds are always ready for a good time.
Garcia is also a big fan of the food and music at the festivals. “Each festival has a little different vibe, which
is cool. You will see a lot of the same vendors, but there is always something new, which I appreciate. The food and the music are always a highlight, so if you are looking for a fun day with friends or if you are hosting guests from out of the area, a local beer festival is always a great option,” he added. If large festivals are not your thing and you prefer to go at a slower pace and visit breweries on your own, you are in luck. The Central Coast Brewers Guild offers a comprehensive interactive beer trail map. For more information on this exciting adventure, visit centralcoastbrewersguild.com. CALIFORNIA 101 Travelers Guide - Randy’s Recipes
CA 101
Healthy Eating in the New Year
By Randy Graham
Eating healthy means following a healthy eating pattern that includes a variety of nutritious foods. It also means getting the number of calories that’s right for you (not eating too much or too little). So, in 2024, why not forget diet fads such as The South Beach Diet, The Scarsdale Diet, The Grapefruit Diet, and The Atkins Diet, and use common sense? Instead of making spaghetti and meatballs and loads of French bread for dinner, consider making my Braised Tofu Bowl. This recipe is low in calories, low in carbohydrates, and is virtually fat-free. It features grilled tofu slices, green onions, shiitake mushrooms, carrots, garlic, ginger, poached eggs, and crushed red pepper flakes in a white miso broth. No frying. No bread. No cheese.
My Guinness Onion Soup recipe includes a wonderful combination of garlic, onions, fresh thyme, lemon juice, and brandy. It is my “riff” on French onion soup, but is infused with Irish goodness, including a wee bit of Guinness Draught in the broth and melted Blarney Castle cheese on top. The Hearty Bean and Kale Soup recipe is comfort food on a cold winter night. It is full of bold Mediterranean-style flavors and is ready to serve in 30 minutes. My recipe makes a boatload of soup, but what you don’t eat now can be frozen and enjoyed for dinner on another night. Samosas are made with puff pastry, although the pastry adds less than 10 calories to each serving. My version of Samosas is vegan, and instead of being deep-fried, they are baked.
In addition, my recipe boasts a fantastic combination of herbs and spices. Give these bite-sized appetizers a try! If you are thinking of making something deepfried for dinner, consider making my Crustless Tomato Quiche recipe instead. It is glutenfree and vegetarian. At first glance, the list of ingredients may look to be heavy with dairy because it includes sour cream, milk, and cheese, but the amounts of dairy per serving are small. And there are no trans fats because there is no crust. Add a chopped salad with a simple oil and vinegar dressing, and this is a complete and healthy dinner. My recipes are tasty, nutritious, easy to prepare, and are a great way to start the new year for you and your family.
Braised Tofu Bowl Makes 4 servings. Ingredients: 14-ounce block of firm tofu (cut into 4 lengthwise slices) 1 cup hot water + 5 cups cold water 10 tablespoons white miso paste 2 green onions (sliced) 3 ounces shiitake mushrooms (trimmed)
Crushed red pepper flakes (as a condiment at the table)
1 medium carrot (sliced thin)
Directions: Preheat the grill to high heat (about 550 degrees). Spray or wipe the grill with vegetable oil to keep the tofu from sticking. Remove the tofu from the container and rinse under cold water. Slice in half horizontally. Place slices on paper towels, cover with more towels and put something heavy on top to help absorb excess moisture. I place a cutting board on top
2 cloves garlic (peeled and sliced thin) ½ teaspoon ground ginger 4 large poached eggs 108

CALIFORNIA 101 Travelers Guide - Randy’s Recipes with a couple of cans of crushed tomatoes on top of that for weight. Let sit for 20 minutes so towels absorb as much moisture as possible. Remove tofu slices from towels. Grill tofu for five minutes per side. You should have nice grill marks by now. Remove from grill and cut each slice into quarters. You should have eight square slices of grilled tofu (two for each bowl). Set aside. Add miso paste to a medium bowl with one cup of hot water. Whisk to mix thoroughly. Set aside. Add green onions,
CA 101
mushrooms, carrots, garlic, ginger, and tofu to a medium saucepan along with five cups of water. Cook on medium heat for seven minutes. Remove from heat and add miso mixture. Stir to combine. Spoon soup into four bowls. Add a poached egg to the top of each bowl. Bring bowls to the table along with a dish of crushed red pepper flakes on the side. Tip: Leave out the eggs for a vegan meal; it is still tasty and satisfying.
Guinness Onion Soup Makes 4 servings. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 cloves garlic (minced) 4 medium yellow onions (peeled and sliced thin) Salt to taste 1 tablespoon fresh thyme (chopped) 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons brandy 1 ½ cups Guinness Draught beer 6 cups vegetable stock 1 tablespoon Better Than Bouillon Vegetable Base 4 slices whole wheat bread (toasted)
about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions are golden brown. Add the thyme, lemon juice, brandy, and beer. Reduce the liquid by half, and then add the vegetable stock and bouillon. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes more.
Directions: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook briefly to release the aroma. Add onions, season with salt, and cook for about five minutes, stirring often. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for
Just prior to serving, preheat the broiler. Transfer soup to four ovenproof onion soup crock bowls or ramekins. Top with toasted bread slices and sliced cheese. Broil until cheese melts and starts to brown slightly (about six minutes). Carefully remove the soup bowls from the oven and serve immediately.
Hearty Bean and Kale Soup
2 15-ounce cans of white beans (drained and rinsed)
7 ounces Kerrygold Blarney Castle cheese (sliced thin)
Makes 6 to 8 servings. Ingredients: 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 large white onion (diced) 1 medium carrot (peeled and diced) 2 28-ounce cans of fire-roasted tomatoes (diced) 4 cups vegetable broth california101guide.com

Add the kale and simmer for three minutes or until the kale is tender. Add the remaining ½ teaspoon of fennel seeds and serve while still hot. Tip: If you aren’t vegan, sprinkle a teaspoon of grated Parmesan cheese on each bowl of soup before serving.

CALIFORNIA 101 Travelers Guide - Randy’s Recipes 1 ½ teaspoons curry powder ½ teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon ground allspice ½ teaspoon cinnamon Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 plum tomato (seeded and chopped fine) ¼ cup frozen green peas 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro (chopped) ¼ cup vegetable stock 1 package Pepperidge Farm puff pastry sheets (thawed) Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Boil the potato in the skin for eight to ten minutes. It is important not to overcook the potato, or the consistency will
CA 101
be mushy. Drain liquid, wash under cool water, and when the potato is cool to the touch, peel and dice into ¼-inch cubes. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add olive oil. Add onion and cook until soft, about three to four minutes, then add jalapeño, ginger, garlic, coriander seeds, curry powder, cumin, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Cook for about two to three minutes. Stir in the potatoes, plum tomato, peas, cilantro, and vegetable stock. Cook another minute more. Remove from heat and let cool. On a lightly floured surface, unroll both sheets of dough. Cut each sheet into nine squares, so you have 18 total squares to fill. Spoon a teaspoon of the potato filling onto the middle of each rectangle and fold up, bringing the four points to each other, then pinch at the seams to form a small pyramid and transfer to a baking sheet. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Crustless Tomato Quiche Makes 4 servings. Ingredients: 1 cup sour cream 1 small onion (diced) 1 medium zucchini (sliced thin) 10 fresh mushrooms (cleaned and sliced thin) 1 cup cheddar cheese (grated) 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese (grated) 5 medium eggs ¼ cup milk 1 medium tomato (sliced thin) 1 tablespoon butter (melted) ½ teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spread sour cream on the bottom of a lightly greased pan california101guide.com
or baking dish. Sprinkle diced onion over the sour cream, and then layer the zucchini, mushrooms, and cheese on top of that. Beat eggs and milk together and pour over veggie/ cheese layers. Top with slices of tomato. Blend butter, garlic powder, and oregano together and pour over the top. Bake for one hour. Allow to cool for 15 minutes before cutting and serving. Winter 2024
