Wind your way along Highway 46 and discover one of the lesser-known treasures of wine country: the 46 West Wineries (PAGE 66). Running from Paso Robles to the beach, its rolling hills are home to almost two dozen wineries. Writer-photographer Katherine McMahon stopped in at a few to give us a taste of the region. Santa Barbara’s Presidio neighborhood has a little bit of everything that makes SB so great. Take a tour with Zachary Rosen (PAGE 79) as he dives into its history, food, art and cultural offerings. From the 149-year-old Lobero Theater to new fashion boutiques and day spas and a sumptuous cheese shop, the Presidio deserves a day (and then some!) of exploration. Cute, quaint, quintessential Central Coast: That’s Arroyo Grande (PAGE 96)! We share our must-see spots in this little town that straddles the 101 just east of Pismo Beach. Grab craft beers at Humdinger and some of the best cookies you’ve ever had at Mule Bakery, take a hike to Big Falls and Little Falls, or just a short walk along the Swinging Bridge. For a town of less than 20,000 people, there’s a surprising number of things to see and do here!

If you are a golfer of any kind and you’re looking for a world-class public course experience, look no further than the Soule Park Golf Course in the beautiful city of Ojai. The Soule Park course plays 6,856 yards from the championship tees and is a par 72 course with a USGA course rating of 72.8 and a slope of 128. Soule Park is situated in the heart of Ojai and is surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest, with nearly every hole offering a breathtaking view. This course is one of my favorite places on earth, mostly because it has a spiritual feel to it. No matter how my golf ball is flying that day, I truly enjoy being on the grounds of Soule Park. For those of you wondering if you should ride or walk, Soule Park is a pleasant walk, with only a couple of major hills to navigate. The temperature can get a little hot in the summer months, but I still forgo the ride and opt for a pushcart, and rarely regret my decision.

The Course Layout When you arrive, the pro shop has anything you might need for your golf outing, and the staff go the extra mile to ensure your needs are met. Soule Park offers a topnotch driving range which is always in excellent condition, and there is a practice putting green adjacent to the range. There is also a small chipping area for those golfers looking to refine their short game before heading to the first tee. Once your group is called and it’s time to tee off, hole 1 offers an elevated tee-box with water on your left and trees lining the right side, so your best bet is right down the middle. Long hitters can take advantage of a hill just in front of the green to gain some extra yardage; but beware of going long on your second shot because there is plenty of danger surrounding the first green. Hole 1 offers you a chance to get off to a fast start, provided you avoid the water and navigate the bunkers protecting the green.
they are deep. If you make a mistake you can go from one bunker to another in the blink of an eye and before you know it, you’re looking at a double, triple, or even worse. The green is sloped and tends to be fast, so putting from above the hole will make even the best golfers weak in the knees.

The water hazard, just below the first hole.
The second hole takes you over a creek, and there are bunkers on the right side that can easily turn a solid tee shot into a mistake. The green can also play difficult depending on the pin placement, but this is another excellent opportunity to card a par or a birdie early in your round. Your first par-three challenge comes on hole 3, and don’t sleep on this one because it can ruin your scorecard in a hurry. The hole is only 140 yards from the tips, but it is surrounded by bunkers, and 26

After the dangerous third, you get back-to-back birdie opportunities with two parfive holes, both of which can be kind to your scorecard if you can avoid mistakes. That’s the good news; the bad news is holes 6, 7, and 8 present a difficult three hole stretch for any golfer. The par-three sixth hole is 242 yards from the oak trees, so it takes a poke to find the green. Once you do get to the putting surface, the green has plenty of break to it. I’m generally happy to card a four on this difficult hole. Number 7 is a par-four and is the No. 3 handicap hole on the course. With danger on the left, golfers are well served to work up the middle or right side of the fairway. The green slopes to the creek, so an approach shot on the right side of the green will generally funnel down to the hole. So, this hole can provide an opportunity for a low score if played carefully. Hole 8 is the most difficult on the course, and it often lives up to that billing. The hole is uphill and rewards a long, straight tee shot. There are trees waiting for you on both sides of the fairway, and the green is well protected with a large bunker. Without a doubt the hardest part of No. 8, for me, is the green. I’ve had more three and four putts on california101guide.com
The pond, creek bed and sand traps make for challenging play.

this hole than I care to recount. Much like hole 6, I’m happy to walk off this green with a bogey.
green with your tee shot, you’re generally going to be looking at a par.
Number 9 offers a chance for redemption before making the turn. It is a pretty straightforward hole and with a decent second shot, you should have a quality chance at par or even a birdie.
Hole 11 is a long par-five, but it offers plenty of opportunity for a par or better. One bit of advice on this hole: don’t miss left on your tee shot. Pretty much anything else will do. Hole 12 is one that for whatever reason, always gives me problems. The par-four is a dogleg right with an elevated green. So, your approach shot needs to land softly to keep from rolling off. If you can avoid the sand with your tee shot and hit a good approach, you should be well on your way to a good score.
At the turn, you have an opportunity to stop by the newly renovated Zaidee’s Bar and Grill, which offers a nice selection of food and drinks whether you are grabbing something to take to the 10th tee, or if you are dining before or after your round. Zaidee’s offers some of the best views in the entire Ojai Valley along with inside and outside bar seating, and a relaxing patio that overlooks the ninth green. Your back nine experience starts with another elevated tee box and a water hazard you will need to navigate. No. 10 is a short par-three with water on the right and a big dropoff behind the green. If you miss on this hole, play it short to avoid adding some strokes to your card. If you can hit the california101guide.com
The 13th is a short par-four and is the No. 16 handicap hole on the course. You want to take advantage of this hole because the next two can put a damper on your day in a hurry. The key to 13 is to keep your tee shot away from the trees that line the righthand side of the fairway. Also, avoid going long on your approach to the green or you’ll have a difficult recovery shot. Spring 2022

Holes 14 and 15 are the No. 2 and 4 handicap holes, respectively, and this stretch of the course can add several strokes to your scorecard if you are not careful. Hole 14 is a long uphill par-four with trees on both sides and a green surrounded by sand. It takes two solid shots for your average (and above average) golfer to hit the green in regulation, so this is one of those holes I am happy to card a bogey and move on. If No. 14 didn’t cause you to toss a club, chances are the 15th might. This downhill parfour brings a creek into play, so depending on how your tee shot goes, you are either looking at a second shot over the creek and onto the green, or you are laying up to cross the creek with your third shot. This hole might be a suitable time to swallow your pride if you are looking at a long second shot; trust me, I know! I’ve put my fair share of balls in the creek bed, so take the emotions out of play if needed and opt for the safe play.

The final three holes at Soule Park present both challenges and opportunities. Hole 16 is a par-three with a troublesome bunker on the front side of the green, but the green itself can be a beast. The putting surface is typically fast and can be hard to read. This is one of my favorite holes on the course, but I’ve also walked away with a nine — yes, a nine. So, don’t dismiss this one. No. 17 is a par-four that runs parallel to the driving range. You’ll be rewarded if you hit a good tee shot down the middle of the fairway. There are trees on the right which can greatly impact your second shot, so beware.
Photos by Mike Urbanek
Oak trees, pines and other trees dot the greens and cluster around the holes.
The 18th and final hole is the easiest on the course and as a par-five, is a great chance to end your day on a high note. The green is easily reachable in three and funnels from right to left, so if you hit your approach shot on the right side of the green, your ball will generally run toward the hole.

Views abound at Ojai’s Soule Park Golf Course.
At the end of your round at Soule Park, you feel like you’ve played a difficult course. The walk along with the challenge of the course makes for a terrific day. There is no better way to cap off your day on the course than a drink or meal at Zaidee’s Bar and Grill. Whether you enjoy the bar, an indoor table, or a nice outdoor experience, you truly can’t go wrong.
Recent Improvements Back in July 2017, Keith Brown took control of the Soule Park Golf Course. Prior to Brown’s arrival, Soule Park was somewhat of an afterthought for me and my golfing buddies. The course had dried out to the point we always joked about the “Soule roll” on our drives and quite honestly, the experience just wasn’t that great aside from the beauty and peacefulness surrounding the course. However, now the course offers one of the best public course experiences in all of California, and the nation for that matter.

Keith Brown and his team have given the bar a fresh look.
After more than 20 years with the American Golf Corporation and serving as the organization’s chief operating officer, Brown brought his vision and wealth of knowledge to the Ojai Valley. He can be found helping out in all areas of the day-today operation and he is also a stellar golfer who competes in most of the Soule Park tournament events. Brown has made significant changes to the grounds and completely renovated Zaidee’s and its surroundings — and golfers far and wide are taking notice. It used to be that 90% of the golfers at Soule Park were locals, but now you’ll encounter people from all over California who have made the trip to enjoy the Soule Park experience. This has made getting a tee time a little more strategic, but honestly, that is a small price to pay for the quality of what you get.

hosted the likes of the Toyota Tour Cup and several other high-profile events. Despite the flood of golfers coming from outside of Ventura County, Brown has retained a strong relationship with local golfers. This is evident by the turnout for Soule Park’s golf club tournaments. Additionally, the Soule Park Senior Golf Club showed their love for the course and its employees by raising funds to help support the staff when the course was closed during the pandemic. It is that kind of community support that underscores the importance of having a home course and the plethora of benefits it brings to Ojai residents. Local golfer, business owner, and community leader James Casey has seen the improvements Brown and his team have made, and he is a big fan. “Zaidee’s Bar and Grill has brought a fantastic gathering place for the entire community. You see golfers and community members alike spending time together and enjoying the new menu and cocktail list. The view is second to none and the entire atmosphere around the course has been reinvigorated,” he said. Another golfer who has been impressed with the upgrades to Soule Park is Erik Newlove. Although he only plays Soule Park a few times a year, the course has become one of his favorite destinations. He said, “The Soule Park experience is special, and I always leave feeling fulfilled and happy. The course is always in great shape, and I really appreciate the effort Keith 30

and his team are putting into upgrading the entire facility. If you haven’t played Soule Park, you should soon!”
Green Fees and Zaidee’s Menu Another great aspect of the Soule Park Golf Couse is the affordability factor. The green fees are fair compared to other public courses I play on a regular basis. Currently, the weekend rate is $44 for the green fees and $18 for a cart. During the weekday, the green fees are $34. Soule Park also offers a terrific twilight rate of $25 on a weekday and $32 on the weekend. If you are looking for a bite to eat, Zaidee’s Bar and Grill is not only convenient, it is excellent. It’s known even amongst non-golfers, who love to come in for a bite, a beer, and the view. In the morning, you can’t go wrong with the Soule breakfast or a big breakfast burrito. On the all-day menu, consider the Zaidee’s classic burger. All of the ingredients are fresh, the food is terrific, and the service is fast and attentive. If you have time to enjoy the dining room, the views and the vibe are truly unparalleled in the Ojai Valley. The full menu for Zaidee’s Bar and Grill can be found on the Soule website. Soule Park offers an easy online option for making a tee time, which can be found at soulepark.com. The golf course at Soule Park was originally designed by renowned architect William F. Bell in 1962. Bell was responsible for many other iconic Southern California golf courses including Torrey Pines (North and South) in San Diego and Sandpiper in Santa Barbara. In 2005 Soule Park underwent a golf course renovation led by Gil Hanse who is one of the industry’s most highly regarded modern-day golf course architects.

The Road Less Traveled: Highway 246 A 26-mile tour through the Santa Ynez Valley Story and photos by Bennett Barthelemy
Spring invites wanderlust. Its warmer, longer days and the color bursts of blooming wildflowers make one want to head out and find new adventures. A spin across the Santa Ynez Valley on Highway 246 is a delightful cure. I chose this 26-mile stretch of highway because of the stellar eateries, historic architecture, a flourishing art scene, wineries, lavender farms, cultural explorations, and even hungry ostriches. I headed north on Highway 154 in Santa Barbara County, and a left turn began this sojourn. With my back to the rugged San Rafael Wilderness — the Valley’s eastern terminus — I go west on SR246. The route more or less follows the natural geographical line of the valley that is also home to the Santa Ynez River.
The terminus of Highway 246, where it becomes Armour Ranch Road at the eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley

Casino comes into view. The casino is good opportunity to get some thrills while giving a little something back directly to the local Santa Ynez band of Chumash that still live here on a tiny portion of their long since dispossessed ancestral lands. Near the casino, they are currently building a new Chumash Museum and Cultural Center, slated to be opened later this year. The goal is to share and engage with their language, land stewardship principles, and cultural identity. The town of Santa Ynez itself was established 140 years ago this June. Throughout the town there are reminders of the old days and horse culture. Downtown, you will find many painted wooden horses decorated by local artists, and horseshoes embedded at crosswalks on Edison Street. There are quite a few boutique shops to peruse, and the El Rancho Marketplace is a nice spot for sushi and homemade pies. california101guide.com

Pride and Joy, located on Alisal Street in Solvang.
Iconic Solvang.
Solvang
Solvang was settled by immigrants from Denmark, who created a little taste of Scandinavia across the pond on the Central Coast of California. Since its incorporation in 1911, the town has stayed true to its roots with Danish architecture, including windmills and fachwerk. Excellent bakeries, restaurants, and quaint shops line the streets. A Little Mermaid fountain can be found in Denmarket Square; it’s not quite the size of the original, which I have visited many times while living in Copenhagen, but worthy of a visit in its own right.
An emu, one of the many at OstrichLand just outside of Solvang.

Just outside Solvang is OstrichLand USA, a place to get up close and personal and feed emu and ostriches from viewing decks. OstrichLand is a rescue center that provides running-around room for some 100 birds from very different parts of the world than Santa Ynez (Australia and Africa). 38

Buellton
The author and his older brother at Andersen’s Pea Soup circa 1975.
Just south of OstrichLand is the town of Buellton, which sits at the intersection of the 246 and Highway 101. When crossing the 101 it’s hard to miss the iconic business that has been there for nearly 100 years: Pea Soup Andersen’s. On one of my many childhood trips we took from Ventura to visit my grandparents in San Francisco, we made a stop in Buellton at the famed restaurant. I was maybe 5 at the time. These days, they still offer their famous split-pea soup, as well as a range of burgers, sandwiches, pastas, traditional Danish foods, desserts, and lots more. This time, however, I stopped at the Industrial Eats just down the street. Buellton holds its Brew Fest every May with more than 50 breweries represented. This year’s event is set for May 7 at River View Park, and along with the breweries, it offers wine, spirits, live music, food trucks, and lawn games. It’s a fantastic way to set the tone for the summer. If you prefer wine to beer, Buellton’s a great stop. Its coastal fog and cooler nights are giving it a name for lovers of Pinot Noir. This reputation, of course, was definitely helped along by the movie “Sideways,” which was filmed at several locations around the Santa Ynez Valley. Many of the local restaurants have quality local wines on draft pull. In the nearby Santa Rita Hills, there are some 30 boutique wineries.

Denise and her son, Lucas, are running the operation using regenerative practices. Down Highway 246 a couple miles further just before you enter Lompoc proper is La Purisima Mission. The most fully-restored mission in Golden State Apothecary grows several species of flowers, and offers tours. California, La Purisima allows visitors a glimpse of life as it was in the early 1800s under the Spanish. With sheep shearing rooms, a kitchen, barracks, and a working farm with livestock and gardens, it transports you back 200 years. In the heart of Lompoc, Eye on I was a very pleasant culinary surprise. We chose their epic wood-fired pizza with squash, apple, and prosciutto, and paired it with a duck breast salad. After our meal we wandered around Lompoc and discovered some of its 30-odd murals. At the edge of town, Highway 246 ends and turns into Ocean Road. Following it, we see the Santa Ynez River to the north, the mouth of which meets the beach and provides habitat for snowy plovers and other water birds. Veer north onto Ocean Park Road for some prime birding, or stay on West Ocean Avenue to hit the Lompoc-Surf Amtrak train platform and the Surf Beach parking lot. Either spot is a good place to stop, listen to the birds, and watch the sun get swallowed by the Pacific. 40

The Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show: Art and inspiration on the beach Photos and Story by Misty Hall
Cabrillo Boulevard in Santa Barbara is about as close to “iconic California” as you can get. Running parallel to the beach, it boasts palm trees and Pacific on one side, and on the other, hotels, restaurants, and shops in Spanish revival-style architecture. The weather is amazing here year-round, and the views from every direction are stunning.
Palm trees line Cabrillo Boulevard, giving the whole experience a classic California feel.
One of the best things about the Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show: you can bring your friends, spouses, children, and furchildren!

If you find yourself in town on a Sunday, make time for a stroll through the Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show. Its 150 artists line Cabrillo in pop-up fashion from 10 am to dusk each Sunday throughout the year (and on Saturdays, too, during holiday weekends). You’ll find art of every kind — paintings, jewelry, clothing, pottery, toys, sculptures, photography, and more — all totally handmade by Santa Barbara artists. It’s among the oldest shows of its kind in America. Dating back to the mid-1960s, it was inspired by the sidewalk shows of Europe and Mexico City. The eclectic mix of art and the idyllic setting are lovely, but perhaps the greatest thing about this free weekly show is the fact that visitors can engage with the artists directly. What tools and techniques do they use? How long does it take to make each piece? How the heck did they get into this business, anyway? These sorts of fun, intimate exchanges create much more than just a nice way to work off your lunch. The culmination of it all has given the Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show some serious staying power, in one of the Central Coast’s most beautiful cities.
“Whimsical” is the word that comes to mind when viewing Cris Hamilton’s art. Her delightful women, fairies, and monsters can be found on cards and small pieces, but her specialties are tiny drawings no larger than a dime. There’s a surprising level of detail in her little critters!

Deirdre Stietzel’s graphic drawings — and the poetry that accompanies each piece — are inspired by her meditations. Her metallic pens create shimmering lines that illuminate as the light changes. “They change energy as you move through the day,” she says. Her pieces, and the poetry she includes with each piece, is meant to inspire others’ meditations, healing, and manifestations, and to “open portals to other dimensions.” california101guide.com

46 West Wineries sip your way from Paso to the Pacific
Story and photos by Katherine McMahon Over the past decade Paso Robles has taken off as a wine region. In 2013, Wine Enthusiast named it the Wine Region of the Year and in 2016, Sunset Magazine called it the Best Wine Region in the West. From around 20 wineries in the 1990s, there are now approximately 300. Some wineries have grouped together to create separate identities within the Paso region. One such group is the 46 West Wineries. As the name suggests, these wineries lie along the western portion of State Route 46, which runs from the 101 just south of Paso Robles over the Santa Lucia Mountains to Cambria and the Pacific. In these 20-odd miles, you’ll find about the same number of boutique wineries that have joined together to form the 46 West Wineries. Recently I drove the 46, stopping at a few to get a taste of what makes them so special. Heading west on the 46, less than a mile from the 101, the first road to the right is Twelve Oaks Drive. “Twelve oaks” in Spanish is doce robles, which is the name of the winery you will find down this country lane. Doce Robles Winery & Vineyard was started by Jim and Maribeth Jacobsen more 66

Grey Wolf Cellars
than 20 years ago. They produce affordable yet award-winning red wines — specifically Barbera, Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Jim comes from generations of grape growers, and he believes that the real work of winemaking happens in the vineyard. His focus on healthy, flavorful fruit translates into flavorful wine. The Doce Robles tasting room sits behind the family farmhouse on a ridge overlooking vineyards stretching to the east and west. Maribeth and Jim are often there in the tasting room to greet you and talk about their wines. In addition to great wine and views, Doce Robles features live music, hayrides, an ideal special event venue, and friendly dogs! Continuing west along the 46 and down Arbor Road is Hope Family Wines. The Hope Family grew grapes for others in the Paso Robles area for many years before Austin Hope decided to try his hand at winemaking. Twenty-plus years later, Austin is still the Hope Family winemaker. In 2019 and 2020, the Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon was ranked in the top 10 of Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Top 100 Wines of the World — the only Paso wine to achieve this honor. While Austin’s Cab was impressive, my personal favorite was the Lagrein-Petite Sirah. california101guide.com
Hope Family Wines and Treana Tasting Cellar.
The patio at Hope Family Wines and Treana Tasting Cellar.
Lagrein is a northern Italian grape variety not often seen in Paso, so I was excited to try it. When combined with Sirah, it makes a deep red wine with rich berry and soft spice notes. Not only are the wines superb, the tasting area ranks among the best-designed I have ever visited. The placement of furniture and planters create semi-private seating areas that make every visitor feel like a VIP. Barton Family and Grey Wolf Cellars offer great food and wine pairings at their urban farmhouse tasting room.

Another mile down the 46 brought me to Barton Family Wines, which also offers the Grey Wolf Cellars wine label and KROBĀR Craft Distillery. Joe and Shirlene Barton started this winery in 1994, with their son Joe Jr. helping in his free time between college classes at Cal Poly. Joe Jr. took over as winemaker in the late ‘90s, and in 2020, he was named the Winemaker of the Year by the San Luis Obispo County Wine Industry. The Barton Family’s urban farmhouse tasting room features a kitchen with casual farm-totable cuisine and an outdoor seating space that has a relaxed, unpretentious vibe. I had a caprese pizza which paired perfectly with the Instinctual, a 100% Grenache bursting with dark cherry and vanilla that’s bold without being too much. When the cheese and pesto met the boldness of the Instinctual, it was pure deliciousness! But my favorite wine was the Lineage, a 55% Malbec, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc that had notes of dark berries and coffee.
Dark Star Cellars makes small lots of premium, handcrafted wines and features some of the more unusual styles like Montepulciano, Tempranillo, Viognier, Roussanne, Rosé, Grenache, and Port. Dark Star has a reputation for a laid back, family- and pet-friendly atmosphere. They have an indoor tasting room and patio, and fun extras like an observation beehive, axethrowing pitch, cornhole boards, free-range chickens, and winery cats. They also host live music once or twice a month.
Feeling something stronger? Barton Family Wines also offers tastings of spirits from KROBĀR at the back of their property.
What made the stop extra fun was the spirits tasting room; Barton has recently added the KROBĀR Craft Distillery tasting room to the back of the property. KROBĀR produces bourbon, rye, gin, and rum. They also make their own bitters and use mixers made by the Paso Robles-based Yes Cocktail Company. The results are amazing. The Cranberry Twist was one of the best cocktails I have ever had! Right next to Barton Family Wines is a red barn-like building with the words Dark Star in big letters across it. 68
Spring 2022
At the back of the Dark Star Cellars building is Volatus Wines. LT Hal Schmitt was a Navy fighter pilot in the late 1990s when he began tasting wines in Paso and meeting with winemakers. When he retired from the Navy, Hal and his wife Victoria formed Volatus. The tasting room is designed to give the vibe of an officer’s club. Volatus is one of the newer additions to the 46 West Wineries, but already has a reputation for distinctive wines — like the bold red blend Top Gun Cuvée — and for its welcoming hosts.
My next stop was Four Lanterns Winery, another mile down the 46. I fell in love with their relaxed tasting area and delicious Rhone Valley and Bordeaux style wines. The tasting room looks like an old farmhouse; in fact, the 35-acre property was once an apple farm. Steve and Jackie Gleason opened Four Lanterns eight years ago after moving to Paso Robles with their four daughters, who inspired the name. I sat on the back patio in front of a fire table and sampled a wide range of wines. They are most known california101guide.com
for Grenache and Merlot, but what astonished me were two white wines: a Picpoul Blanc and a Late Harvest Viognier. Picpoul Blanc is an ancient varietal, Languedoc, I had never seen before. It was crisp, with a green apple bite. The Viognier is a sweet dessert wine that tastes like pears and apricots with a hint of spice. I took several home. Four Lanterns also offers accommodation at the Little Yellow House, a farmhouse that is now a short-term vacation rental. I was hoping to get to Donati Family Vineyard, the last winery on the 46 West, located right at the intersection with Vineyard Drive, but the day was ending. Donati is distinctive for its French-chateau style building, with picnic areas and bocce ball courts. Ron Donati has carried on the legacy of his Italian grandfather who made his own wine for the family. The tasting room is decorated with family photos, emphasizing the family pride and heritage. The core of the wine
portfolio has always been Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Syrah, and Grenache. Even though I only visited a handful, I saw both the diversity and the unifying idea of the 46 West: top-quality wines combined with a great visitor experience. These are familyrun businesses with a personal touch to the winemaking. The different wineries generally offer a similar range of wine styles – notably, the Rhone and Bordeaux varietals typical of Paso Robles. But each winery brings a distinct character to their wines, and has different stars of the show. They also recognize that visiting Paso is about the experience. From luxurious relaxing seating to food to live music, the 46 West provides a full experience for the visitor. The 46 West Wineries include: AronHill Vineyards, Broken Earth Winery, Castoro Cellars, Croad Vineyards, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles Winery & Vineyard, Donati Family Vineyard, Four Lanterns Winery, Barton Family Wines/Grey Wolf Cellars, Hunt Cellars Winery, J Dusi Wines, Midnight Cellars, Peachy Canyon Winery, Sextant Wines, Shale Oak Winery, Tooth & Nail Winery, Hope Family Wines & Treana Tasting Cellar, Volatus Wine, and Windward Vineyard. For hours, directions and more, visit 46west.wine.
Four daughters, Four Lanterns. The Gleason girls inspired the name of their family winery — and its previous life as an apple farm inspired its aesthetic. california101guide.com

Santa Barbara is one of the Central Coast’s most popular tourist towns. The combination of stunning scenery and loads of activities, shopping, and dining keeps bringing visitors back. Over the years, new hot spots have popped up in town like the artsy Funk Zone, but for more than 100 years El Presidio has been a social and cultural center of Santa Barbara. And today it remains as active as ever. The neighborhood is filled with boutique shops and popular eateries in a historic setting that tells of Santa Barbara’s roots. While there is a lot to see in the area, it is hard not to spend all day, or even a weekend, around the Presidio. The Presidio neighborhood is roughly the four-block area lining the intersection of Anacapa Street and Canon Perdido Street. El Presidio is now a State Historic Park and Landmark, but the site was first built in 1782 as one of the last four military outposts established by the Spanish. The Presidio sits kitty-corner to Casa de la Guerra, which was built between 1818 and 1828 by José de la Guerra, the fifth comandante of the Presidio. While the buildings stand as relics of the past, over the years they have served as important cultural centers for the town, including the celebration of Old Spanish Days (better known locally as california101guide.com
simply “Fiesta”). Both sites are popular spaces for weddings, private soirées, and public events. There are museums at both the Presidio and Casa de la Guerra, and visitors can walk through the old adobes lined with historic objects like cannons from its military past. The Presidio also houses a viewing tower, heritage garden, and a small chapel with a vibrant interior. sen

For a deeper dive into the region’s past, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum sits in the neighborhood as well. The adobe-style building was built in 1964, but there are two historic adobes onsite, including Casa Covarrubias from 1817. Its permanent exhibits tell the story of Santa Barbara, moving through its Native American origins, Spanish entanglements, famous families, and progression of culture. During the visit you can also walk through the charming courtyard and well-landscaped grounds or see the Western artworks by Edward Borein that are currently on display in their gallery. The nearby Craftsman Prairie-style Carrillo Recreation Center is somewhat newer, dating back to 1914, but its unique cantilever dance floor was the first of its kind in the West. Today it still serves as a community center with exercise classes, club meetings, and private functions being held there year-round. Each of these buildings have their own history and contributions to the community, and all of them are worth a visit. Spring 2022

BIG FUN IN SMALL-TOWN CALIFORNIA Story and photos by Katherine McMahon
If you are like me, you have driven up and down the 101 between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo countless times, seen the exit for Arroyo Grande, and told yourself that someday you will get off and explore. Well, I am here to tell you — you should!
The only bridge of its kind in the state, the famous swinging bridge has crossed Arroyo Grande Creek for more than a century.
Arroyo Grande is an adorable little city nestled in the heart of the Central Coast, about three hours northwest of Los Angeles and 90 minutes from Santa Barbara. Originally inhabited by the Obispeño Chumash, it officially became a city in 1911. Plenty has changed over the years, but Arroyo Grande’s vibe is still classic Central Coast. The heart of Arroyo Grande is the village along Branch Street just north of the creek that gives the city its name. On a Friday, the village was bustling. Arroyo Grande is the type of place where everybody knows each other; servers and bartenders know their customers by name. I felt like I stepped onto a small-town movie set and I loved how, in some parts of town, time seems to have stood still. If you are a lover of coffee like I am, then you will be happy with Arroyo Grande’s wide variety of choices. I found my personal favorite at Tribe Coffee, on the west side of town. Tribe brews up some truly delicious coffee and is one of the cutest shops I’ve ever been to. You can enjoy your latte while browsing the gift shop that features so many unique items. For a healthy but delicious breakfast spot, look no further than Café Andreini right in the center of the village. Here you’ll find open-faced sandwiches, breakfast burritos, açai bowls, and some of the best avo toast on the Central Coast! If you want to indulge a bit then try CJ’s Café, a local diner known for their generous portions of breakfast burritos, omelets, huevos rancheros, pancakes, and chicken fried steak.

Spend an afternoon on Laetitia’s patio, where you can sip their sparkling wines, nibble on a selection of local breads and cheeses, and catch glimpses of the ocean on clear days.
Arroyo Grande is part of the Central Coast wine region, but there are only two wineries actually in Arroyo Grande. Lucky for you, they are both amazing. Laetitia Vineyards is located right off the 101 freeway south of the village, and it has become one of my favorite wineries in California. Laetitia specializes in sparkling wine and makes some of the

This is the type of place that, if I lived locally, I would be at all the time. The service is fantastic, the beers are delicious, and the food is unique and flavorful.

After all that eating and drinking, take a walk along the swinging bridge.
Historic buildings — some of which are well over a century old — add an old-fashioned charm to downtown Arroyo Grande.
As far as activities go, there is lots to do in Arroyo Grande. One fun and unusual sight is the Swinging Bridge. Originally constructed in 1875, it is the only bridge of its kind in the state of California. It connects the village with a historic neighborhood on the south side of town. The Swinging Bridge is a popular landmark, and during rainy seasons you can see Arroyo Grande Creek trickling underneath. Right across the bridge from the village is the Santa Manuela Schoolhouse and Heritage House Museum. The Schoolhouse was originally built in 1901 and the Heritage House was built in the late 1800s. They now contain the South County Historical Society, a hands-on museum for historical exploration and learning. Nearby is the Clark Center for the Performing Arts, which features music and theater productions on its two stages. Looking to enjoy the outdoors? Head to Lopez Lake! fun for the whole family. With miles and miles of shoreline and warm lake temperatures in the summer, there is something for everyone — fishing, camping, equestrian and mountain biking trails, zip-lining, and great birdwatching. There is even a waterpark called the Mustang that is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Arroyo Grande is also next to the Santa Lucia Wilderness, one of San Luis Obispo County’s most striking natural areas. A popular hike is the Big Falls/Little Falls Trail. You’ll come across two dramatic waterfalls — Big Falls and Little Falls — on this easy-to-intermediate, 1.5-mile loop, located in a wooded canyon. As you can see, I discovered that while Arroyo Grande may be small in size, it has a lot to offer. It’s well worth the visit! Conejo Canyon Open Space Trails:
A gorgeous escape with versatile outdoor recreation Story and photos by Adam Nuñez
Drive just 15 minutes northeast of Old Town Camarillo to the Conejo Canyons Open Space Trails, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported hours away. At the trailhead, the quiet stillness is interrupted only by wind rustling through tall eucalyptus trees and the murmur of a tranquil river. The canyon walls stretch steeply upwards, invigorating your body and mind. You’ll forget that you’re so close to civilization.

The main entrance is located off Santa Rosa Road on Hill Canyon Road. For detailed directions, you can also do a search for “Santa Rosa Valley Regional Park.” This is a well-established starting point for horseback riding. The Conejo Canyons Open Space (aka “Western Plateau”) truly has something for everyone to enjoy, including dogs on leashes. You can take a 1-mile family stroll on the flat Hill Canyon Trail, hike round-trip 7 miles up to Elliot Mountain, or even mountain bike 15-plus miles up steep hills and through shaded valleys. Any of these options can be coupled with a delightful picnic under a canopy of oak trees. The wide range of trail choices makes the Conejo Canyons appealing for those seeking anything from a tranquil rest to an adrenaline rush.
for thousands of years before the arrival of Mexican and European settlers. Then later, according to the Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF) website, the nearly 1,500 acres were “recognized as a community treasure in the 1970s and preserved as permanent open space after a 40-year effort by local residents and government agencies.” The area is managed by Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency and is also supported by COSF, which is entirely self-supported by volunteers and funded through memberships, donations, and grants. Without these types of organizations, our beautiful publicly accessible spaces surely wouldn’t exist. COSF regularly accepts volunteers to organize educational programs with local schools, maintain trails, and much more (see cosf.org for more information).

A mountain biker cruises down some single-track trails near the Western Plateau Trail.
Conejo Canyon Open Space Trails over a footbridge. It’s a wide, flat dirt trail running parallel to the Arroyo Conejo River. Depending on when you visit, this might resemble a small creek more than a river. However, during the typically rainy spring season, there are a few spots that reach two to three feet deep and stretch about 20 feet wide. From Hill Canyon Trail, there are a few spots that split off to smaller paths that reach the river. This is a favorite option for my family when we’re looking for a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle. If you venture a bit further, you’ll reach a fork in the trail. Go right and you’ll hike uphill on the Western Plateau Trail. Continue straight for the shaded and slightly undulating Hawk Canyon Trail. Also, if you continue straight then soon veer left, you’ll cross the river and reach the Hill Canyon Treatment Plant Wetlands — a nearly pancake-flat gravel trail meandering around a picturesque pond. If you continue venturing in this westward direction, you’ll be faced with a few more river crossings. Since these crossings deter many

would-be explorers, if you decide to continue on you’ll likely have this shaded trail all to yourself. You’ll encounter some truly serene spots next to the river luring you away from life’s stressful obligations and inviting you towards restful rejuvenation. If you venture even further and turn left onto Lynnmere Trail, you’ll enter Wildwood Park. Back at the fork at the end of Hill Canyon Trail, if you choose to go straight you’ll find a canopy of shade under a variety of oak trees and riparian woodlands. You’ll encounter cattails and other tall grasses beside a small creek. And because you’re tucked away in a canyon, the only noise comes from the trickling creek and the rustling of leaves through the trees. After about a half-mile, you’ll have the option to turn right and hike uphill. Make the short but steep trek up this trail and you will have entered the high country of the Conejo Canyons. Keep in mind that there is far less shade up there, so if you’re hiking in warmer weather you might want to start earlier in the day. Either way, always plan ahead, know your

No matter when you visit, though, you can always enjoy incredible views. The trail from here is mostly flat, so you can jaunt along heading northwest or explore a few side trails like the Plateau Rim Trail. In Ventura County, this is some of the best mountain biking terrain I’ve come across. With smooth curves and rolling short hills, this is a near-perfect mountain biking trail.

360-degree views at the peak are spectacular. Look north to view the mountainous Los Padres National Forest, east to see Wildwood Canyon, south to gaze at the Santa Monica Mountains, and west to peer at the Channel Islands National Park in the distance. There’s no shortage of awe up there.
On my most recent mountain biking excursion to the area, I met longtime Camarillo resident and frequent hiker of the Conejo Canyons, Dana Curts. He informed me of an even higher unmarked “Rim Trail” accessible via an offshoot of the Western Plateau Trail. Time constraints limited me from exploring this region, however it’s all the more reason to return soon. I did still have the privilege of riding up Elliot Mountain. This is a moderate-to-strenuous hike, depending on where you’re starting from, but the
Throughout the Conejo Canyons there are smaller side trails, some of which are unmaintained. Unless otherwise stated by a trail sign, feel free to explore these areas. You’ll find a few “hidden” rock caves, small stream beds, and cozy green glens. Be mindful to stay on the trails since it’s common to see rattlesnakes in this area once the weather warms up. Their keen ability to sense vibrations makes them very afraid of humans and they’ll quickly slide away. However, if you or your dog is stomping through tall grasses, this increases the likelihood of an encounter. Wildlife includes much more than snakes, though. On my most recent visit I saw two roadrunners trotting along and two hawks gliding gracefully overhead. Another visitor told me he has seen bobcats, mule

deer, and coyotes – all of which are skittish in the presence of humans, but beautiful to observe. It’s important to mention that you don’t even need to step on dirt to enjoy the Conejo Canyons. If you park at the main Santa Rosa Park entrance you can walk, ride a bike, use a wheelchair, or push a stroller along a flat paved road with very little traffic. After parking, simply continue along the road. No parking is allowed past the gate, which relieves a lot of concerns about traffic. This road is approximately one mile long and leads to the Hill Canyon Water Treatment Plant. On a recent visit I met another local resident, Marilu. About twice a month she uses this smooth road to practice rollerblading. I can’t imagine a better place to enjoy such a classic activity. Actually, I can’t really imagine a much better area with so much versatility for outdoor recreation. The Conejo Canyons Open Space Trails is truly a special place deserving of our vigilant protection and fullest enjoyment. I hope you find the time to explore this beautiful area!

Sometimes when you step into an unfamiliar place, there’s a vibe, an energy, a magic to it — something that’s hard to describe, but undeniably there. That’s how you’ll feel entering Jes MaHarry’s shop in downtown Ojai. The renowned jeweler/artist and her family have put countless hours into revamping the flagship store, where every item, every light fixture, even the boards in the floor, tell a story that’s entirely MaHarry’s. Though the shop has been in the heart of Ojai for five years, it was shuttered for 18 months during the pandemic. We met there in late winter just before its reopening. “This is a really special store, we put our heart and soul into it … everything has a story,” MaHarry said, pointing to the rounded, copper-topped counter stamped with messages. She described how she and her family put in 15-hour days over six months to give the space new life. MaHarry and her sister, Wendy, ripped up carpets, painted the colorful, whimsical murals on the walls, and installed custom flooring. “It’s from Jane’s broken fence,” MaHarry explained. “She put her head through it.” Jane, it turns out, is a 2,000-lb orphaned Angus cow that MaHarry rescued. The damaged and worn wood was repurposed to make a section of 118

Personal touches abound. MaHarry’s father, who has since passed away, created the sculptures in the store. Her husband Patrick Henderson, a skilled and artistic welder, made the jewelry cases, tables, and many of the lights for sale in the store from old gears and other motorcycle parts. The walls of the shop showcase the wildlife and animal photography of MaHarry’s other Photo by Brooks Guyer sister, Jennifer, which include a stirring image of a herd of American mustang horses during a round-up. A large lighting fixture in the center of the shop was wired by her sister’s stepson from several large can-lights that were used in a 1960s Disney film. Along with the jewelry she’s most known for — which is available on her own website and through the dreamy Sundance catalog — MaHarry also draws and crafts ceramic pieces. Her simple one-of-a-kind plates and bowls are available in her store, as are her line drawings which have been collected in a coloring book. “They’re not technical,” she said about her drawings and other creations. “I’m not taught or trained. It’s very organic how I make things.”
MaHarry has been making things from found objects since the age of 3 or 4. “I’ve always loved making things, even as a little, little child,” she recalled. “One of my first memories is playing with my grandmother’s costume jewelry — the colors, the beads.” It felt natural for her to create things with artists of all media all around her: musicians, writers, painters, she added. “I always made jewelry with little things I found — washers, feathers, bones. I’d give them to people, and they’d wear them.”
immediately attracted to them. “I love the aged, worn feel,” she said. “They were 200 to 300 years old.” That led her to start researching the history of the beads being used in trade in Africa. She loved the natural hues, “the earth tones, all colors from the minerals in the ground.” She never did graduate from that college, for want of a few credits. While her father wanted her to take a job on Madison Avenue with friends of his in the advertising world, she knew it just wasn’t the right

Years later, when studying illustration in college in Columbus, Ohio, the college president would tell her that jewelry making “was not an art form.” She just knew that was wrong.
fit. “I was in these waiting rooms, with businessmen and my portfolio … it was like Mad Men,” MaHarry remembered. They looked at her “crazy, weird drawings” and would ask, “What are you doing here?”
MaHarry found herself in the library researching ways of making jewelry and worked mostly with copper or brass wire — generally things she’d find. A local coffee house was selling African trade beads, and she was
She was at a point where she had to figure it out on her own. “My dad said, ‘I’m not giving you another penny.’” Today she laughs describing the challenges she faced and the jobs she had and failed at.

“I got fired from everywhere,” she said — waitress jobs, or at McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s. “I’d save up my money and pay $7 for one bead” — one of those African beads — to make a piece of jewelry with. As she kept getting fired, “It was a huge awakening … a continual reminder that I’m not doing what I’m supposed to be doing.” She was squeezing in her jewelry-making between her working hours at those dead-end gigs, taking every opportunity to draw or make a new piece. “I never thought I could earn a living doing it,” she reflected. “I was trying to fit into a mold that wasn’t me.” Eventually, MaHarry’s mother paid for her to take a class at a local museum. It was the first time she worked with silver, she said. “It was like the parting of the sea, that moment for me when I realized I could draw on metal. Everything else in my life funneled into that moment.” That’s when things started to shift. She found shops in New York that would sell out of her handmade earrings in a week. Her first pairs of earrings were made from soda can pop-tops with beads and charms. She soon learned about casting, and that opened up an entirely new possibility: to be able to make more than one piece from an original design. Today, MaHarry’s wildly successful — not to mention stunning — jewelry 120

line is still breaking records in the Sundance catalog, and flying off the shelves both on her website and at her shop in Ojai. All of MaHarry’s pieces are handmade by a team of people who have found their way to her studio. The pieces each have a story, like the top-selling Photo by John Phaneuf tree ring that was inspired by the strength of her father. A piece, she said, remains among the most popular in the Sundance catalog. She credits the success of her pieces to the message and the story they contain, and the meaning they impart to the person who wears them. But the road to success was paved with missteps. Still, MaHarry pushed on. As she found herself in the learning curve of building a business, she’d be without cash but still working to fulfill orders and attend tradeshows, where her pieces would sell out again and again. The first tradeshow netted them just enough money to buy a fax machine, which was needed to receive orders from the larger department stores. “We did everything wrong,” and spent too much money getting to the show and creating the pieces for the show. “And his iguana pooped in the fax machine and broke it,” MaHarry said, laughing with Patrick at the memory.

After a successful tradeshow in New York — where their display was made from a gate they pulled out of the snow and ice — photos of MaHarry’s pieces started making the rounds. They were suddenly california101guide.com

on billboards in New York, and her pieces were being worn by the likes of Susie Tompkins from Esprit, Hillary Clinton, and even the Pope. She would eventually get her jewelry into Macy’s and other stores, garnering a $45,000 order, and finding herself suddenly with 19 employees. Her business was growing fast, and she had her first opportunity to get into the Sundance catalog. “But I wasn’t ready … in my craft,” MaHarry recalled. “We were not polished enough. I was making my ear wires by hand. We were hard-working, continually working, but really rudimentary.” So, she made a decision. “I made a promise to myself.” Even though the Sundance catalog had become her “goal of all goals,” she wouldn’t more forward until she was ready. “I wouldn’t act on something that doesn’t feel right.” Several years later, she felt ready, and crafted a rose gold ring. She put images from the story of who she was into the gold band. “Fire, wind, sun, rain, horse, heart.” To MaHarry, they are part of her life, her favorite things, her love of animals, and the Ojai california101guide.com
Valley where she makes her home. She was ethically sourcing her gems before that was a thing, and she ensured that the materials she used were always top-quality. Nothing dyed, nothing plated, “All with an authentic energy.” There was pressure to change her approach to lower the price, but MaHarry refused. “I can’t sacrifice my ethics on why I’m doing this to sell a cheap version,” she asserted. Her attitude and dedication have cultivated a dedicated following. Messages are written into the pieces — charms, rings, bracelets — creating a “hidden good vibe” in the pieces. “We get letters and gifts” from people who buy her jewelry and want to share how that ring or necklace brings them joy. “That is the beauty of it,” said MaHarry smiling. They are seeing and feeling the love put into each piece.

Fresh Spring Salads
CA 101
Before Caesar Cardini (of Caesar salad fame), Henri Heyraud (Niçoise salad), or Jamie Oliver (mixing salads with fingers), there was the plain old garden salad. The Oxford Dictionary of Food and Drink in America says that garden salads were popularized in ancient Rome as raw leafy vegetables covered in salty, oily dressing. It is not surprising, then, that the word salad derives from the Latin word for salt (sal). Today, we enjoy salads with vegetables, beans, pasta, seafood, tuna, chicken, eggs, fruit, and even Jell-O disguised as a molded salad. They are a nice break from stodgy, although tasty, cool-weather soups, and if done correctly, they are delicious and healthy. You can’t get much better than that. I like a salad as a light lunch or a side dish with dinner. My idea of a simple spring salad includes fresh leafy greens such as butter lettuce or arugula with an oil and vinegar dressing. I also like to create a salad bar at home for my family that features leafy greens and three different salad dressings from which to choose.
Here are my five favorite spring salad recipes and three additional salad dressings that are good on any salad.
Give them a try!
Edamame Black Bean Salad with Honey-Lime Dressing This is an all-purpose spicy honey-lime salad dressing — perfect for a tasty springtime salad. I’ve included an edamame salad recipe for your use, but you can substitute plain romaine lettuce leaves or your favorite combination of salad greens instead of the edamame. Dressing Ingredients: 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro (chopped fine) 1 garlic clove (minced) 1 small jalapeño pepper (chopped fine) Edamame Salad Ingredients: 2 cups fresh shelled edamame 126

1-1/2 cups fresh corn 1 cup black beans (rinsed and drained from a 15-ounce can) 1 avocado (cut into -inch pieces) 1/4 cup red bell pepper (chopped) Salt and pepper to taste Edamame Salad Directions: Combine all ingredients except for the avocado. Stir well. Add the avocado pieces, being careful not to mash them while stirring into the rest of the salad. Serving Directions: Combine all dressing ingredients in a blender and blend for about 60 seconds (or until smooth). Pour over salad ingredients and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. Tip: To make the dressing vegan, substitute agave nectar for the honey. california101guide.com
CALIFORNIA 101 Travelers Guide - Randy’s Recipes Blood Orange Salad with Fennel and Avocado This vegan salad features blood oranges, fennel, and Fuerte avocados in a fantastic combination of fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, the dressing is made with a flavorful blood orange olive oil and pear-flavored white balsamic vinegar. Add a touch of agave nectar for sweetness, fresh edible flowers from the garden for color, and you have a salad your friends and family will remember for many a moon. Ingredients: 3 to 4 blood oranges (peeled and sliced 1/8-inch thick) 3 fennel bulbs (sliced 1/8-inch thick, see below) 3 avocados 1/2 cup blood orange olive oil 1/4 cup D’Anjou white balsamic vinegar 1/4 teaspoon agave nectar 1/2 bunch Romaine lettuce (chopped) 4 pansy flowers (nasturtiums are a good substitute) 4 chilled salad plates Directions: Trim the ends of each fennel bulb. Cut into quarters and remove the core from each quarter. Slice thinly (crosswise). Set aside. Peel oranges. Trim off the extra pulp. Slice off ends and discard. Slice oranges in half from top to bottom and then slice into 1/4-inch thick slices. Set aside. Peel avocados and cut in half. Discard seed. california101guide.com

Slice avocados into 1/4-inch thick slices. Set aside. In a mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, balsamic, and agave nectar. Set dressing aside. To serve, place a handful of lettuce on each chilled salad plate. Arrange oranges, fennel slices, and avocados on top of the lettuce. Drizzle with a good tablespoon or more of dressing. Garnish with pansy flowers and serve while plates are still cold. Tip: Blood oranges are available through April, but if you can’t find any, you can substitute navel orange slices. Arugula-Walnut Pesto Pasta Salad Arugula is available year-round and, with its peppery taste, is a nice changeup for a spring salad. I like baby arugula because it is less bitter and more tender. It makes a difference. If you can’t find baby arugula at your favorite store, try looking for it at a farmers’ market. Ingredients: 2 cups baby arugula 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 cup toasted walnut pieces (divided) 3 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 12 ounces farfalle pasta 3/4 cup crumbled Gorgonzola cheese 3/4 cup golden raisins Directions: Whirl together arugula, lemon zest, garlic, 1/4 Spring 2022

CALIFORNIA 101 Travelers Guide - Randy’s Recipes cup walnuts, oil, salt, and pepper in a food processor until blended, scraping inside of bowl as needed. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain pasta, reserving a scant 1/4 cup of water. Return pasta to pot and add pesto, stirring to coat. Stir in remaining walnuts, cheese, raisins, and reserved pasta water. Tip: for a vegan salad, leave out the cheese. Classic Three-Bean Salad My wife, Robin, has made this recipe at least every year of the 44 years we’ve been married. It is one of my favorite non-leafy-green salads and is excellent for potluck gatherings or picnics! Ingredients: 15 ounces cut green beans (drained) 15 ounces white beans (drained and rinsed) 15 ounces kidney beans (drained and rinsed) 1/2 cup white onion (chopped) 2 teaspoons granulated sugar 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 large stalk celery (chopped) 1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Directions: Gently mix all ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for three to four hours before serving. Cold Lentil Salad with Kalamata Olives I like this recipe because it is different, it is flavorful, and it is nutritious. It’s a wonderful addition to my spring and summer picnic fare. The combination of lightly seasoned lentils, cherry 128

tomatoes, red onion, olives, and a fresh vinaigrette dressing can’t be beat. Lentil ingredients: 2-1/2 cups cooked lentils (I use Trader Joe’s steamed lentils) 1 cup diced English or Persian cucumbers (no need to peel) 1 cup cherry tomatoes (quartered) 1/4 cup red onion (chopped fine) 1/4 cup flat-leaf parsley (chopped) 1/4 cup pitted Kalamata olives (chopped) 1/4 cup pitted Castelvetrano olives (chopped) 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese Vinaigrette ingredients: 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons yellow mustard 1 teaspoon agave nectar 1 teaspoon dried oregano (crushed between the palms of your hands) 1/2 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper Directions: Place all lentil ingredients (lentils through cheese) in a large bowl and stir to combine. Set aside. Place all vinaigrette ingredients (oil through pepper) in a medium bowl and whisk until well mixed. Pour over the lentil mixture and gently stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. I like to serve this on a bed of chopped crisp lettuce and to bring a loaf of crusty French bread to the table (or to the picnic blanket). Tip for vegans: Use vegan feta, and this is a completely vegan recipe!

Salad Dressings Pecorino, Yogurt and Black Pepper Salad Dressing This is a simple yet super tasty blend of ingredients and can be made in less than 10 minutes from start to finish. I serve this as a side with grilled artichokes. You might also like to try it with jalapeño poppers, croquettes, or a mixed vegetable tray. Ingredients: 1/2 cup Pecorino cheese (grated fine) 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon zest (grated fine) 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons water Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Directions: Blend cheese, yogurt, oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, and water in a blender until smooth; season with salt and a generous amount of pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use. Tarragon Salad Dressing Although American cuisine does not favor tarragon, it is a major flavoring in French cooking, including béarnaise sauce. The French call it the “King of Herbs.” The ancient Greeks reportedly used it as a remedy for toothaches. Today, we know that tarragon contains an anesthetic chemical, eugenol, which figures prominently in anesthetic clove oil. See the movie “Marathon Man” for a disturbing use of clove oil as an anesthetic. On second thought, even though Dustin Hoffman is exceptional as Babe, skip the movie! It is disturbing. Tarragon loses potency as it dries. This may be why it is frequently preserved in vinegar, which captures its essence and provides tastiness when used in salad dressings. But why purchase tarragon vinegar when you can enjoy fresh tarragon from your garden? Here’s a creamy salad dressing recipe using fresh tarragon. california101guide.com

Ingredients: 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup salad oil 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon gluten-free tamari sauce 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 clove garlic (minced) 1-1/2tablespoons fresh tarragon (minced)
Directions: In a small bowl, whisk mayo, oil, lemon juice, vinegar, tamari, pepper, and garlic. Add tarragon and mix well. Cover and chill for a couple of hours to allow the tarragon’s goodness to infuse the dressing. Tip: You can substitute Vegenaise for the mayonnaise and this is becomes a vegan dressing. Cilantro-Lemongrass Dressing This recipe was developed as a way to enjoy the fresh lemongrass Robin grows in our backyard. Serve it on salads or with grilled tofu cutlets on rice noodles. Ingredients: 1 cup canned unsweetened coconut milk 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves (no stems) 6 tablespoons chopped tender inner stalks lemongrass 2 tablespoons fresh ginger (grated) 4 large green onions (coarsely chopped) 4 jalapeño chiles (seeded, coarsely chopped) Juice of 1 lemon 2 garlic cloves (peeled) Salt to taste Directions: Combine coconut milk and all remaining ingredients in a blender. Puree until smooth. Thin with more coconut milk by the teaspoon for desired texture. Season to taste with salt. Serve at room temperature.
