Dear Readers, It’s finally sweater weather (“sweata weatha,” if you’re an SNL fan). Sure, the Central Coast is best known as a summertime destination, but it holds a special charm in the winter, too. Well, and in the fall. And the spring. OK, maybe we’re a little biased around here. But the point is, no matter what time of year, whether you live here or are just visiting, the Central Coast will never disappoint. Want proof? Read on — and just hit the road and see for yourself! Go for a drive on the Chumash Highway (PAGE 8). This inland alternative to the 101, also known as the 154, takes you through some of Santa Barbara County’s most beautiful countryside, with some great stopping points along the way. We love that you’re reading our magazine right now, but once you get back onto the 101, you’re going to need to get your local information in a hands-free way. Luckily, the local NPR station, KCLU, has you covered. Turn to PAGE 19 to find out more, then turn your radio dial to KCLU. Want something a little stronger than wine? Zachary Rosen takes us on a tour of some exclusive locally made spirits (PAGE 29) perfect for long winter nights.

Cooped up with the kids on a school break? Take them to a kids’ museum! Our region has fantastic options from SLO to Ventura that are sure to occupy them for a few hours — and teach them things, too! Check out PAGE 40 for details. Speaking of stopping points on the 154, Los Olivos is a must-see. Small-town vibes, awesome shopping (J. Woeste for the win!) and almost two dozen wine tasting rooms? Sign. Us. Up. You might be reading this in thick socks and a hoodie, but now is the time to start planning your summertime concert schedule! Check out Vina Robles, Libbey Bowl, and the Santa Barbara Bowl (PAGE 61), three of the area’s best-loved outdoor concert venues. Don’t forget to grab some winter citrus when you’re here on the Central Coast, because Chef Randy has some fabulous recipes for you to try (PAGE 75). CA Here’s lookin’ at you, orange fennel 101 avocado salad! Spend an idyllic day on the links at Sandpiper (PAGE 84). The Unknown Golfer and his buddies give us a rundown of one of Santa Barbara County’s most gorgeous courses. The Central Coast has a lot going for it — including its incredibly caring human population. From sea lions to kittens and burros to parrots, the area has a wealth of animal rescues and sanctuaries (PAGE 89). Regardless your tastes, interests, or curiosity, we’ve got your California coziness all wrapped up from cover to cover. Enjoy! california101guide.com

Santa Barbara Backroads – The Chumash Highway, SR 154 The first car over the San Marcos Pass is said to have travelled the steep switchbacks in 1910.

By Bennett Barthelemy

Today, it is the summit of the Chumash Highway — a twolane alternative to Highway 101 between Santa Barbara and Los Olivos. Horse teams and stagecoaches worked the route after Chinese laborers had hacked out a wide enough path in the early 1860s. Officially dubbed SR-154 in 1964, it was hewn out of a Chumash network of trails traversed by countless feet over some 10,000 years, connecting village sites, springs, rock art panels, and other important points in this small corner of Chumash land. The Barbareño Chumash named their village Syukhtun, where present-day Santa Barbara sits. This is where you leave the 101 at the southern terminus of Highway 154 and quickly gain elevation to eventually crest the Santa Ynez mountains at 2,225 feet — the San Marcos Pass. A very worthy detour is Painted Cave Road. The eponymous cave can be visited two miles above the 154. Known to the Chumash as Alaxuluxen, Painted Cave fell out of use after the Spanish conquest of the 1700s, due to the genocidal consequences endured in the years since. (However, during my last visit I noticed quite a bit of white sage reverently placed beyond the barrier at the cave’s mouth.) Now guarded by an iron door to protect the site, it is believed the cave’s walls chronicle up to 1,000 years of Chumash history, including astronomical events like the eclipse of 1667.

Native Chumash paintings, spanning centuries, line the cave walls at Painted Cave, just off the 154.

The sun rises near Highway 154, on Camino Cielo above Santa Barbara.

About a mile and a half beyond the narrow Painted Cave Road lies West Camino Cielo. From this ridge, the glimmering Pacific shines and the Channel Islands rise out of the cobalt sea — where the Chumash believe they started their journey as a people. Falling away to the right are views of the Santa Ynez Valley and the incredibly rugged San Rafael Wilderness. If you venture across the West Camino Cielo, there are some great rock formations and day hikes with incredibly expansive views. High-quality bouldering exists at the Brickyard and Lizard’s Mouth for those who like to climb. Beware, however: West Camino Cielo can be closed at any time due to weather (especially since it is in the burn scar of the recent Alisal Fire). A high-clearance vehicle will be helpful once the pavement ends a few miles in.

Lizard’s Mouth is a popular bouldering area above Santa Barbara in the Los Padres National Forest. california101guide.com

Past the Camino Cielo heading north, you drop down to the valley to cross one of the highest arch bridges in the U.S. The Cold Spring Arch Bridge is more than 1,200 feet long and sits 400 feet above the canyon. Take a left at Stagecoach Road just before the bridge and you’ll discover Cold Spring Tavern, a Winter 2022

historic stagecoach stop-turned-bar that hearkens back to the 1860s. If you’re traveling the 154 Thursday-Sunday, be sure to grab a local beer and one of the Tavern’s famous tri-tip sandwiches to fuel the rest of your trip. Just down the 154 to your right will be Paradise Road. A 10mile oak-studded drive will put you in the foothills where there are ample day-use picnic spots — a perfect home base for creek splashing or great day hiking on the Alder Creek Trail (a 4.5 mile loop). There are also several campgrounds if you’re looking to stay the night. But if you’d prefer to camp with a view, try Lake Cachuma. It boasts ample tent and RV sites, along with a handful of yurts. The man-made reservoir has been dropping to historic lows due to drought in recent years, but still offers boat rentals and decent bass fishing during the right time of year. There is also a challenging disc golf course and a quite nice nature center, with stuffed critters and other interesting exhibits great for engaging travel-weary kids. Bald eagles are winter residents at Cachuma, and are often seen hunting along with herons, ospreys, and red tail hawks. 10

The 154’s southern end offers dramatic ocean panoramas.

Forging ahead, once back on the 154, the forested hills and tight valleys give way to gently rolling plains, and the last 10 or so miles are lined with cattle ranches and wineries. Sweeping live oaks dot the scraped plains. At the junction to SR-246, one can bear left and find the impressive Chumash Casino to watch a live concert, gamble, and give some long overdue money directly back to the tribe. Continue on the 246 and you’ll find yourself in Solvang, the quaint Danish-style town which deserves its own day trip. Past the 246 junction just two miles before reaching the 101 again, lies the community of Los Olivos. The thirsty will find some 20 wine tasting rooms in this up-and-coming tourist destination with its distinctive Old-West Americana persona. Depending on the day, you might pass only a handful of cars on the 154, or be ensnared in traffic (should the 101 be closed due to a major traffic impediment, you can bet on the latter). But either way, as you amble along the Chumash Highway it is well worth the effort — especially when adding in a few worthwhile detours while considering the complicated history and continued legacy of the region. california101guide.com

Lake Cachuma may be lower than usual due to drought, but the views toward Figueroa Mountain and beyond are stunning any time of year. Winter 2022

Connecting the Central Coast to the world By Tiobe Barron

Radio: since its inception in the early 19th century, it has been a medium that connects, informs, and even comforts during times of upheaval. In the 1930s, families in the United States would gather around “the wireless” to listen to california101guide.com

President Franklin Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats, gleaning important goings-on of the time. As well, it united and engaged in a way that included those previously disenfranchised by print media, such as those who could not read or were sight-impaired. Important local and national events, everything from boxing matches to elections, were experienced communally in this way,

united by radio broadcasts.

Here on California’s Central Coast, National Public Radio (NPR) programs are brought to us by local radio station KCLU. Based out of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks since 1994, KCLU is public radio at its finest, covering the gamut of local, national, and global news, as well as culture in all its forms, from poetry to television. Tuning into local public radio is a terrific way to keep a finger on the pulse of a community, get important weather and road condition updates, and connect with the arts. “KCLU is the No. 1 NPR news station in the region delivering its popular mix of NPR news and its award-winning local news to residents up the coast from Westlake Village to Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo and all points in between,” Winter 2022

explains KCLU radio general manager Mary Olson. Not only does KCLU bring local news, it also brings the world to listeners with shows like BBC World Service, Morning Edition, On Point, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, The New Yorker Radio Hour, and more. The KCLU team includes news director Lance Orozco, reporter/producer Caroline Feraday, hosts Willa Sandmeyer and Dave Meyer, general manager Olson, director of operations and production Luc Flannery, and director of member services Mia Karnatz-Shifflett, along with other occasional contributors. For those of us who find ourselves on California’s Central/Southern Coast, whether for a short time or a lifetime, we can rely on that small, local, awardwinning staff to bring us independent coverage of top stories in the region. When the Thomas Fire struck Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, evacuated residents relied on national media networks for updates on whether their neighborhood was aflame, but there 20

was often a frustrating delay in how frequently new information was broadcast. But KCLU’s team was on-scene, giving hyper-local updates, in real time, to listeners. From the Montecito landslides in 2018, to the Alisal Fire in summer 2021, to traffic snarls up and down the Central Coast, the KCLU team consistently keeps listeners in the loop. Not that KCLU is only for emergencies. They’re ready with regional updates — who’s playing next at the Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center, which animal had babies at the Santa Barbara Zoo, and when the next launch is scheduled to lift off from Vandenberg Space Force Base. They’re also an excellent source of uplifting, feel-good stories, too. “I got nominated for student of the year with the Leukemia and Lymphoma

Oak Park resident and student Viane began baking to combat boredom after the COVID-19 lockdown in early 2020, and now has a flourishing small business creating bespoke baked goods (though she hopes to ultimately land a career in math and science). Launched Nov. 4, 2021, KCLU’s weekly podcast The One Oh One features rich, in-depth stories on the pressing issues facing San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties – the communities bound together by California Highway 101. content as slick and professional as BBC World News but delivered with the heart of someone personally invested in the communities she reports on. e Winter Spirit

By Zachary Rosen

Photos courtsey of said Distillery

As the winter months set in and after a long year (or two), people are looking for some warming comfort. A hot cocktail or sweet, smoky bourbon can give a little liquid hug to bring some support to the long cold nights. Taste your way through this range of wintery local spirits for some uplifting flavors and a touch of solace in your glass.

Channel Islands Distillery Warm grog, hot buttered rum, and even a boozy chai tea all have a place on the list of winter cocktails, with the buttery caramel character of rum naturally lending itself to warm drinks. During Prohibition, Ventura County and the surrounding areas had a rich tradition of rum-running. The Channel Islands were known to be a secret space for bootleggers to store their rum, hiding their boats on the back side of the islands. It is in this spirit that Channel Islands Distillery in Ventura produces their two flagship rums. Their Signature Silver Rum is produced from organic roasted whole cane sugar and molasses, and distilled in a traditional pot still to produce the slightly sweet, clean-tasting flavor that silver rum is known for. The same distillate (liquid from the still) is then aged in American oak barrels to give the vanilla and turbinado character of their Signature Aged Rum. Along with the occasional limited-edition Po Uila OverProofed Rum and Grey Ghost Extra Dark Rum, any of these will make a pleasant addition to your next winter warmer. Visit cistill.com for a list of Central Coast shops and bars that stock these well-rounded rums. california101guide.com

Foggy Bottom Distillery On a cold night it is sometimes pleasant to just have a sip of something complex that can warm the chest and busy the mind. Foggy Bottom Distillery produces just that. This small distillery, which used to be a storage closet behind a Mexican restaurant in Los Osos, is a one-man show with Todd Adams distilling and serving micro-batches of craft spirits. From rye whiskey to spiced rum, Todd often has several dozen different products available, and these small batches offer some unique blends that you will not find anywhere else. Uphill Fallout, a fruited corn whiskey, is one of the more complex ones. Orange, lemon, cranberry, pomegranate, and blueberry are added during distillation to give the whiskey an intricate aroma that doesn’t detract from its light, clean character. The corn whiskey is then briefly aged in toasted Hungarian barrels traditionally used for wine, which gives it a more neutral oak character and less

smokiness than a bourbon barrel, which is charred. If you’re looking for a stronger barrel character, an aged version of Uphill Fallout called Black Sunshine will soon be released. The Barrel Rested Gin uses the same base fruits as the corn whiskey, along with nine other botanicals to give it a West Coast-style flavor that is citrusforward and light on the distinctive juniper flavor that London-style gins are known for. The gin is aged in a charred barrel, but only for a short amount of time, to give it a light golden color and pick up some of the roasty oak notes of the wood. The small batches from Foggy Bottom are not available online or in any stores. They can only be sampled and purchased at the distillery. Visit their tasting room at 905 Los Osos Valley Rd. in Los Osos on the weekends (Saturday noon to 7 pm and Sunday noon to 6 pm) or

KROBĀR Craft Distillery Whether it is an Irish coffee, hot toddy, or even just on the rocks, the world of whiskey is always a comforting fit for the winter months. The brown sugar and smoky oak character of bourbon make a natural accomplice to the crackling warmth of an open fireplace. Over the years, rye whiskey has become increasingly more popular. In both beer and whiskey, rye grain has a distinct spicy bread-like character to it that is known to smooth out the other flavors. Over at KROBĀR Craft Distillery in Paso Robles, they are producing several bourbons and rye whiskeys, in addition to a range of other spirits like their hearty Navy Strength Golden Rum. This distillery is the creation of Stephen Kroener and Joe Barton, and together they combine more than 40 years of california101guide.com

experience in the alcohol industry. KROBĀR has two rye whiskeys currently being offered. Each one brings the full flavor of the grain, using only rye (95 percent rye and 5 percent malted rye), stronger charred barrels, and a longer barrel aging process of over four to five years. The extended aging and toastier barrels lace the distinctive American oak character of vanilla and caramel to each of these whiskeys. The KROBĀR Straight Rye Whiskey lets the rye shine while letting more of the oak come through with a hint of crème brûlée and kirsch in the nose. They also have a more robust KROBĀR Cask Strength Straight Rye Whiskey. Spirits are typically aged in barrels at a stronger proof and then blended down with water to the final alcohol content in the bottle. Cask strength releases, however, give the drinker the chance to try the full power california101guide.com

of the spirit found in the cask. These special editions are usually from a single barrel, and only released in a small batch. At 57% ABV (114 proof), the KROBĀR Cask Strength Rye Whiskey still has the essence of their rye, with the added warmth of the increased alcohol content. Now with a second location in San Luis Obispo, visit either of their distillery and tasting rooms for a tour, taste, or to just pick up a bottle. KROBĀR Paso is located at 2174 W. Highway 46; in SLO, find them at 10 Higuera St. For more, visit krobardistillery.com.

Sespe Creek Distillery If you’re looking for a whiskey with a twist, then look no further than Warbringer Bourbon from Sespe Creek Distillery in Oxnard. This distillery is the brainchild of David Brandt, PhD. With several degrees and 20 years in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, David brings the technical expertise, experience, and passion needed to run the large stills of Sespe Creek Distillery, which aims to be a national brand. made in specific regions around the city of Tequila in the central western Mexican state of Jalisco, using only the indigenous blue agave plant. If the spirit is produced outside of this region, it is known as an “agave spirit.” While all of the blue agave used in the line of agave spirits from DorWood Distillery come from organic farmers in the Jalisco region, their flavors are purely Central Coast. When Jay Lockwood was first approached in 2013 by his brother and business partner Jeff and his wife Joanne about starting a craft distillery, his first impulse was to make his own tequila. After a year of research, the two brothers opened the distillery in downtown Buellton, and today offer seven different spirits with more to come, including a line of canned cocktails. of success to the new distillery that he brought to Lost Spirits. After only a few years of being open, Sespe’s Warbringer Bourbon and Silvergrin Vodka have collectively won several dozen awards. Warbringer Bourbon is a mesquite smoked whiskey with a southwestern flare. Sespe smokes the corn used in the bourbon with mesquite on a farm in Camarillo, just a mile from the ocean; the higher humidity in the air there helps bring a smokier character to the corn. The base liquid headed to the still (known as the wash) is fermented in wooden cypress fermentation tanks — and Sespe Creek is the only one in Southern California to do this. The wood fermenters naturally harbor microflora that promotes anaerobic fermentation, adding complexity to the flavors of the bourbon. Bourbon, by definition, has to use freshly-charred American oak; however, David selected Minnesota wood over the more familiar Missouri or Tennessee barrels. It has a denser grain that lowers the liquid’s ability to breathe in the barrel (known as extraction rate), giving the bourbon more of a butterscotch note and restraining the vanilla character American oak is traditionally known for. The Warbringer is then finished in premium Pedro 32

Ximénez sherry barrels to give it a rich finish. With all the different flavors going on, David notes that the bourbon was designed to be approachable and not so esoteric that it only appeals to a few palates, describing it as “the bastard child of bourbon and mezcal.” David also produces a special Warmaster Edition in collaboration with former UFC Heavyweight Champion “The Warmaster” Josh Barnett. This version is a cask strength, single barrel release that unloads the full weight of this whiskey. David notes that Josh is not just a figurehead; he works full days at the distillery for the release and brings his own knowledge and passion for whiskey.

Every product that Jay produces focuses on smooth, balanced flavors that can be sipped on by themselves at room temperature. Keeping liquor ice cold is a sneaky way to hide its flaws so he feels that if all of his spirits taste good at room temperature then they stand up to his quality test. This is best seen in his silver agave spirit, Agave Blanco, which won a bronze medal at the 2019 San

Cutler’s Artisan Spirits

Diego World Spirit Competition. It has a rounded, semi-sweet flavor with a hint of white pepper. Jay will occasionally produce an aged version, Agave Rojizo Reposado, that uses pinot noir barrels. Rojizo means reddish in Spanish and this agave spirit picks up some of the grape notes of these distinct barrels. While the different agave spirits can warm the chest, the Habapeño Limoncello will bring another kind of heat into the mix. This spicy edition of his regular limoncello uses a jalapeño and habanero puree to give the slightly sweet lemon liqueur its distinct heat. Just as with his other line of products, the Habapeño Limoncello can be sipped by itself, with a gentle spiciness that lingers in the chest but never overwhelms the palate. As Jay puts it, “The Habapeño Limoncello won’t burn your face off, but will make your tongue dance.” It also blends perfectly with his agave spirits to make a spicy margarita that will add a zesty warmth to the cool winter days.

Cool weather and desserts are a natural fit, and Cutler’s Artisan Spirits in Santa Barbara produces two liqueurs that pair perfectly with the winter months. Owner and head distiller Ian Cutler is dedicated to using only premium ingredients, with no extracts or artificial ingredients and likes to keep the sweetness balanced in his liqueurs so that they can be sipped by themselves on the rocks or warmed. The Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur uses a Colombian roast from Santa Barbara Roasting Company and gets its earthy chocolate notes from the addition of chicory, vanilla beans, and cacao from local Twenty-Four Blackbirds Chocolates. In addition to apples, Grandma Tommie’s Apple Pie Liqueur contains organic cinnamon, Madagascar bourbon vanilla, and a secret blend of spices to capture the flavor and memory of his grandma’s apple pie recipe. Ian uses his vodka as a base for both liqueurs, with the neutral flavor of vodka allowing him to build the flavors exactly as he intends and making it easier to blend into cocktails. He recommends either of the liqueurs with cream and additional vodka. The coffee liqueur creates a roastier White Russian, and

the apple pie produces a cocktail that tastes like melted ice cream. Of course, both go wonderfully with a winter dessert — try the coffee liqueur with a chocolate lava cake, or naturally, the apple pie liqueur alongside a slice of apple pie à la mode. Andersen’s Danish Bakery & Restaurant in Santa Barbara makes a Cutler’s Apple Pie cake, eclairs, and other delicacies with Ian’s liqueurs. Either liqueur will make a sweet end to a wintery night. Visit them at 137 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara to give these sweet somethings a taste, and cutlersartisan.com for more information.

San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum Founded in 1990 when an old transmission shop was donated to the City of San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum is now housed in a more modern, multistory facility geared towards kids ages 1 to 10 years old. SLOCM allows kids hands-on experiences to explore fossils, participate in a “Mission to Mars,” play with a giant light board, discover new ways to mix science and art, and lots more. A volunteer board of directors steer the non-profit organization, with an aim to make the museum “accessible to as many children as possible, and a resource for other community organizations.” To that end, before COVID-19, the museum hosted “Moonlight Hours,” when admission was free for the last few hours of the day. This museum still does hold “Sensory Night,” a safe space for kids on the autism spectrum to experience the exhibits. To help local families during the pandemic, the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum distributed Busy Box Outdoor Adventure boxes for free. Los Olivos Where The Old West By Bennett Barthelemy

A repurposed gas pump gets new life as a sign for the Los Olivos General Store.

Los Olivos sits just two miles south of the 101 freeway along Highway 154 in the Santa Ynez Valley. The name — the olives in Spanish — comes from the 5,000 olive trees that were planted there some 150 years back. Today, the town of around 800 residents boasts about 20 wine tasting rooms, a cidery, a brew pub, upscale boutique shops, and high-caliber restaurants, all packed into just a few blocks. Many of the area’s businesses are still owned by local families, with no chain stores in sight. While strolling the streets lined with historic Victorian buildings, you can’t help but notice the wholesome downhome feel with its character and charm of Western yesteryear meets 21st century affluence. Thoroughbred horse ranches, wineries, and the property formerly known as Neverland Ranch stretch out along the rolling hills nearby. The likes of David Crosby, Kelly LeBrock, Ronald Reagan, Steven Seagal, Bo Derek, Robert Cray, and Cheryl Ladd all once called the area home. 50

Meets The Modern

Downtown Los Olivos blends the old and the new, with the flag pole standing sentry at the heart of it all.

In 1861, the San Francisco stagecoach and trains were the way to travel, and by 1887 with the addition of a train stop, the town began to take off. Mattei’s Tavern/Hotel sprang up to meet the needs of travelers at the terminus of the narrowgauge train line that originated in San Luis Obispo. From here, the stagecoach could bring you further over the San Marcos Pass california101guide.com

to Santa Barbara. The coastal route now known as the 101 wasn’t opened until much later. Historic Mattei’s is now under renovations to greet the 21st century, with a large upscale spa moving in. It is slated to re-open in early 2022. When I wandered the streets on a Monday afternoon there was still a bustle, the town alive with

wine-sipping tourists and late lunch munchers. I stopped in and talked to Claire at the Corner Store and ordered some Santa Barbara-made ice cream. They also offer good local coffee for early birds. Claire grew up locally, so I asked for her opinion of food. For dinner she recommended the pasta at the Wine Merchant down the block. She admitted bias because Winter 2022

I cruised back to the General Store built in 1903 (incidentally used as Goober’s garage in The california101guide.com

A flagpole rising from the intersection, erected in 1918 to honor WWI vets, thankfully stood at full mast (it drops to half when a resident of Los Olivos dies). Events worthy of adding to your calendar happen here in Los Olivos including Day In the Country every October, bringing some 1200 people this year. It is celebrated with a small-town parade, NatureTrack 5k & Fun Run, 100 vendor booths, Figueroa Mountain Beer Garden, live music, food trucks, and Wine Roundup through town. The annual Olde Fashioned Christmas kicks off December with the lighting of the downtown flagpole.

Central Coast Amphitheaters World-class performances in small-town California By Zachary Rosen

There are no bad seats at Vina Robles Amphitheater — and that is very much by design, according to general manager Paul Leatherman.

If Two Years Of Digital Events And Entertainment Through Zoom Has Proven Anything, It Is That There’s No Replacing Live Music. From the roar of the audience to the reverberation of the stage, seeing a live concert is a visceral experience that cannot be captured through a screen. Music venues are opening back up and bands are going on tour again — which certainly is celebratory — but with people having varying levels of comfort and safety concerns in crowds, some are hesitant to rush back to an indoor venue. Fortunately, outdoor amphitheaters offer the perfect opportunity to see live music while having some fresh air around you. The same stunning views and charming venues that bring visitors to the Central Coast is what draws in touring bands, as well. The Central Coast is a bridge between the markets of Los Angeles and San Francisco, and this area has become a popular stopping point for musicians as they tour up and down California. While the area may not have the massive stadiums like Staples Center that can fit tens of thousands of people, it does have several renowned amphitheaters with under 5,000 seats. These outdoor amphitheaters bring all the entertainment of a massive stadium show but in an intimate setting. california101guide.com

Vina Robles Amphitheater Located in the heart of Paso Robles wine country, the Vina Robles Amphitheater offers the perfect complement to a weekend of wine tasting. Surrounded by wineries and resorts like the stunning Allegretto Vineyard Resort, visitors can plan a whole trip in Paso Robles revolving around one of these distinct concerts at this music venue. Founded in 2013, the Vina Robles Amphitheater is one of the newer venues in the area. Yet in the years since opening, they have become a popular spot for both touring bands and tourists. The amphitheater is owned by Vina Robles Vineyards & Winery, which wanted to create a permanent home for its popular Summer Concert Series. Today, it draws between 25 to 30 shows a season, with even more than that expected to be announced in 2022. Although still small when compared to venues found in other major cities, Vina Robles Amphitheater is the largest in the Santa Ynez Valley with a 3,300-person capacity that includes a general admission lawn, fixed stadium seating, and a lower The expansive Vina Robles Amphitheater.

level area that can be adapted to each performance. When designing the amphitheater, they did not want to compromise the experience of the show. Every seat in the house is within 200 feet of the stage. Vina Robles general manager Paul Leatherman says, “We’ve bent over backwards to try to make this venue as easy, welcoming, and accommodating for the artists, as well as the patrons, as possible.” Leatherman has more than 12 years of experience on the Warped Tour and other concert series, which helped him understand what bands need and are looking for in a theater. Each season brings a blend of entertainment styles including comedy sets, rock performances, and other musicians filling the lineup. With a diverse group of artists covering “everything from Tony Bennett to Slayer,” the range of their featured performers appeal to both visitors and season ticket holders. With Vina Robles being owned by a vineyard, naturally the venue has a focus on quality food and drink. The main Plaza Bistro & Bar serves up Vina Robles wines alongside bites and craft beer from the nearby Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and beverage so everybody can have a good time.” Of course, there are some more exotic dining options for those wanting to make a night of it. The Suendero Bar has a more relaxed, lounge feel while the Terrace Club brings fine dining to the premium seating area, which includes the Luxury Box Suites or Jardine Tables that can be rented out ahead of time for groups. Leatherman says the Vina Robles staff wants to ensure that everyone has the best experience possible: “That’s No. 1 for us: To make everybody, whether they pick to be here or were paid to be here, to leave with a smile.” Vina Robles recently announced performances for Stephen Marley and Barenaked Ladies in June 2022 with more concerts soon to come, and is located at 3800 Mill Rd, Paso Robles. The Santa Barbara Bowl Of the Central Coast amphitheaters, the Santa Barbara Bowl is one of the most iconic and acclaimed, drawing in legendary performers like Radiohead, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, and Incubus packed the Santa Barbara Bowl in 2019.

The Who. “We’re fortunate to get them in a market of our size because a lot of these artists don’t play in buildings that are 5,000 seats. They will often play the (SB) Bowl and then go down to Los Angeles and play Staples or the Hollywood Bowl. And we end up getting the same show here in our small community,” says Rick Boller, executive director of the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation. Set among 17 acres in downtown Santa Barbara, this outdoor amphitheater is nestled against the hillside with what is known as the majestic American Riviera as a backdrop. The recent Glass Animals show brought a spectacle of light and catchy tunes that lit up the surrounding hillside and neighborhoods. Since its beginning, the Santa Barbara Bowl has been brightening up the local community. The historic amphitheater was originally built in 1936 for the annual Old Spanish Days pageant. The building changed function as touring rock bands swept the ‘60s and ‘70s, but by the ‘90s it had fallen into a state of disrepair. In 1994, the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation was formed as a nonprofit organization that took over the facility and began the development and implementation of a master plan for the “100-year Bowl,” working with architects to plan Photo by AArthurFisher.com

what the next century would look like for the facility. Their team wanted to get the building up-to-date while maintaining the original charm of the historic structures. series of small capital goals to keep the Santa Barbara Bowl up with modern technologies — such as a solar array — and other improvements that may not have been available when the master plan was being put together. Photo by AArthurFisher.com

The hard work has paid off. Since then, the Santa Barbara Bowl has hosted sold out shows for some of the world’s biggest performers. Boller adds, “We’ve seen artists that play and have a great time here at the Bowl, between the facility and the awesome community that comes out. They are enthusiastic about being here for shows. Then they leave and talk about it with their peers, agents, managers, and other artists. That wordof-mouth has been a really powerful thing for us.” Creating a world-class venue was only the first step, and since the project completion they have been able to focus their efforts on a series of

outreach programs. Boller adds, “It is one of the things that we intentionally created as we were renovating the facility and began to grow. So that when we were done with doing those major renovations, we could shift gears and begin giving back money to the community.” With grant cycles and community subsidized tickets, the Santa Barbara Bowl seeks to support the community that supports them. The Santa Barbara Bowl has also taken an initiative to bring in the future generation of musicians and concert goers. Their Instrument Fund has helped donate and repair more than 2,000 instruments for schools and programs since 2015. One dollar of every ticket sold goes to support these various outreach programs. Their team also wants the community to feel like the Bowl is part of their home. The Santa Barbara Bowl maintains an in-person box office where “On Sale” tickets are sold. Local community members can still line up at the box office when a big show is about to go on sale and purchase a ticket before the show sells out online. With musicians like the Goo Goo Dolls and Lorde already filling the 2022 season, both the community and visitors will have plenty of reasons to check out the Santa Barbara Bowl this year. The Santa Barbara Bowl is located at 1122 N. Milpas, Santa Barbara. Visit sbbowl.com for more information on upcoming shows. california101guide.com

The Libbey Bowl Surrounded by Libbey Park and the quaint town of Ojai, the Libbey Bowl is one of the smaller outdoor amphitheaters along the Central Coast. There are just under 1,000 fixed seats, and a lawn area to accommodate a few hundred more. But don’t let the size fool you — this venue brings in some of the largest independent musicians in an intimate space that puts you practically face-to-face with the performers. It was originally built in 1957 to support the Ojai Music Festival — a classical music festival that has seen the likes of Pierre Boulez, Aaron Copland, and Igor Stravinsky over the last 75 years. The Libbey Bowl went through its own funding campaign around 2010 to make some desperately needed renovations to the community-owned amphitheater. The community rallied to raise millions of dollars to bring it back to life. And, through the efforts and passion of independent concert producer Lance Sterling, this venue has now become a powerhouse of independent music. “I feel the Libbey Bowl and I are a perfect match because of the fact that I’m kind of good with being the outsider,” says Sterling. Ojai is composed of almost entirely independentlyowned businesses, with little corporate presence. Sterling enjoys that the audiences the Libbey Bowl attracts helps support the other businesses in this small town. Visitors can stay at the stunning Ojai Valley Inn or grab a bite to eat at Winter 2022

one of the many restaurants lining the downtown area. This free-spirited atmosphere is what Sterling loves about Ojai, and he’s not the only one; many famous musicians call the surrounding areas home and can even be seen visiting the Libbey Bowl, watching other bands and performers that inspire them. Growing up in Woodstock, NY, Sterling gained much of his business experience and life knowledge while working with House of Blues co-founder Isaac Tigrett, during the early days of development of the company in the ‘90s. Isaac would describe the pair as “corporate refugees” — not made for the monotony and rules of corporate life — and while the House of Blues eventually went the way of the corporation, Sterling has maintained that independent mindset throughout his career. “This is what I am passionate about. What I do, I don’t do it for the money anymore. I do it because this is my life,” he adds.

to be an exciting lineup with so many bands eager to get on tour again. Of course, one event that can be expected is the Ojai Music Festival from June 9 to 12, 2022. It hosts a different musical director each year and encourages them to experiment and play with both the space and performances. With the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC) directing the 2022 festivities, this year will be filled with the boutique and quality performances that Libbey Bowl has become known for. Libbey Bowl is set in the heart of downtown Ojai and is accessible from both East Ojai Avenue and South Signal Street. Visit libbeybowl.org for more information on the 2022 season and ojaifestival.org to learn more about this year’s Ojai Music Festival.

When he first saw the Libbey Bowl and the town of Ojai, he was immediately reminded of his childhood in Woodstock. “My favorite thing is when we do a Grateful Dead tribute or the Vampire Weekend Father’s Day Concert that we do, and I see all the people dancing around, like I used to watch in Woodstock and then Saratoga.” The hoopers, performers, and quirky characters that form the regular flock around the Libbey Bowl each performance, add that air of authenticity that Sterling feels can’t be faked. They are there because they believe in the music. Sterling adds, “We are limited to doing 21 concerts a year and we fill that immediately. Now we have to be careful and just book the best stuff.” If a band is playing at the Libbey Bowl, then there is a good reason. The 2022 season will soon be announced and promises 66

Winter Season Citrus

Tangerine - Mercott

Tangerine - Satsuma

By Randy Graham, the Valley Vegetarian

Tangerine - Lee Orange - Navel

What do tangerines, oranges, and lemons have in common? All are local citrus fruits available during the winter months. And although many of the tangerines and oranges may look similar on the inside, each has a distinctly different scent and flavor. The following recipes feature some of the excellent local citruses available on California’s Central Coast. My Orange Couscous recipe, for example, is made with fresh-juiced navel oranges, which are available from January through April. california101guide.com

My Orange Fennel Salad features blood oranges. Blood oranges, you say? Yep! They are like subtly sweet oranges that have been infused with tangy red grapefruit and hints of tart cherries and raspberries. Besides, they look amazing when plated. When paired with razorthin slices of fennel, they make you smile. My Lemon Zest Pasta is made with farfalle (bowtie) pasta and is as fun as it is tasty. Although various lemon varieties are available year-round, try using the zest from Meyer lemons, which

are available on the central coast from December through February. For the Citrus and Winter Greens recipe, I juice Valencia oranges, which are available in the early winter months. The sweetness of the Valencia oranges balances out the bitterness of the kale. In my Marinated Manchego Tapas recipe, I use the juice from satsuma tangerines because they are some of the first tangerines available, and they have a very distinctive flavor that pairs well with the sheep’s milk manchego cheese. Portobello Wellington Appetizers

with a slice of cheese, then a mushroom, smooth side up, and top the mushroom with another slice of cheese. Brush the border of each pastry circle with egg, then gently stretch one of the four remaining circles over the cheese and press the edges together with a fork. Repeat three more times.

The pairing of portobello mushroom earthiness with fresh winter chard, fresh lemon juice, and the creamy goodness of Stilton cheese will delight both family and friends. I like to serve these with sparkling wine. Here’s a bonus — these puff pastry appetizers can be made ahead of time and kept refrigerated until ready to bake.

Ingredients: 4 medium portobello mushrooms

Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle thyme leaves on top. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven and cool on a rack for five minutes before serving.

4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (divided) 1 bunch fresh red chard (ribs trimmed, leaves cut into ribbons) 1 clove garlic (minced)

Orange Couscous

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste 1 package puff pastry sheets 4 ounces Stilton cheese (eight slices) 1 large egg (beaten) 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Remove the stalks from the mushrooms and brush off the tops. Heat two tablespoons of the oil in a large frying pan on medium heat and cook for three to four minutes on each side until golden. Remove the mushrooms from the pan and set the pan and the mushrooms aside. Clean chard leaves under cold running water. Hold the stem of one leaf in your hand, and grasping the leafy part with your other hand, tear the rib away from the stem. Discard stems and cut leaves into 1/4-inch ribbons. Place the pan back on the stove and add the other two tablespoons of oil. Add the garlic and cook on medium-high heat for one minute. Add the chard to the pan, and then cook for two minutes. Remove from heat, add lemon, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

This vegan dish is colorful, full of flavor, and enjoyed by both my vegetarian and meat lover friends. The fresh orange juice compliments the dried apricots and cranberries. If you juice your own oranges, it is even better. I serve this as a side dish with my seven-layer crepe entrée, although it is so good it’s enough to be an entire meal by itself. It is also a good substitute for traditional Christmas stuffing. No matter how or when you serve it, I think you’ll like it a lot.

Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups fresh orange juice 10 ounces couscous /4 cup vegetable oil

1

Roll the pastry out to /8 inch thickness. Cut out eight circles about 4-inches in diameter (depending upon the size of the mushrooms). Place four pastry circles on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. 1

Top each circle with a quarter of the chard. Top the chard 76

1

1

/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1

1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons ground coriander seed /2 teaspoon dried marjoram

1

/2 cup green onions (green tops chopped)

1

Salt and fresh ground pepper

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Prepare a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Heat orange juice in a medium saucepan to boiling. Stir in couscous, remove from heat, and cover. Set aside for five minutes or until orange juice is fully absorbed. Fluff with a fork. Set aside uncovered. Heat oil on medium heat in a large skillet. Add the next five ingredients (onions through carrots). Sauté for six to eight minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in dried fruits, spices, and green onions. Combine this vegetable mixture with the couscous. Spoon couscous into the prepared baking dish and cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes. This dish cools quickly, so serve while still hot for the best flavor.

Orange-Fennel Salad with Avocado This vegan salad features blood oranges, fennel, and Fuerte avocados. It is a fantastic combination of fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, the dressing is made with a flavorful blood orange olive oil and a pear-flavored white balsamic vinegar. Add a touch of agave nectar for sweetness, and you have a salad your friends and family will remember for many a moon.

Ingredients: 3 fennel bulbs (sliced 1/8 -inch thick) california101guide.com

3 – 4 blood oranges (peeled and sliced 1/8 -inch thick) 3 Fuerte avocados 1 /2 cup blood orange olive oil 1 /4 cup D’Anjou white balsamic vinegar 1 /4 teaspoon agave nectar 1 /2 bunch romaine lettuce (chopped) 4 chilled salad plates

Directions: Chill four salad plates in the freezer. Trim off the ends of each fennel bulb. Slice thinly (crosswise). Set aside. Peel oranges. Trim off the extra pulp. Slice off ends and discard. Halve oranges from top to bottom and then slice into 1/4 -inch thick slices. Set aside. Peel avocados and cut in half. Discard seed. Slice avocados into 1/4 -inch thick slices. Set aside. In a mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, balsamic, and agave nectar. Set dressing aside. To serve, place a handful of lettuce on each chilled salad plate. Arrange oranges, fennel slices, and avocados on top of the lettuce. Drizzle with a good tablespoon or more of dressing. Serve while plates are still cold.

Lemon Zest Pasta Zest is a food ingredient that’s prepared by cutting or scraping the outer skin of citrus fruits, including lemons. Lemon zest may be used fresh, dried, candied, or pickled. It is a flavorful addition to many culinary delights, including pastries, jams, and liquors. Here’s a unique pesto-pasta recipe that I serve in the winter that benefits from fresh lemon zest. I like to use Meyer lemons in this recipe.

Ingredients: 12 ounces farfalle (bowtie) pasta 2 cups baby arugula 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 cup toasted walnut pieces (divided 1/4 and 3/4 ) 3 tablespoons organic olive oil Winter 2022

77

/2 teaspoon salt /4 teaspoon pepper 1 /2 cup golden raisins 1 1

Directions: Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain pasta, reserving a scant 1/4 cup of the water. Set aside. Using a zester, grater, or paring knife, scrape the zest from the outside of one large lemon. Set aside. Pulse the arugula, zest, garlic, 1/4 cup walnuts, the oil, salt, and pepper in a food processor until blended, scraping inside of the bowl as needed. Return the pasta to pot and add pesto, stirring to coat. Stir in the remaining 1/4 cup walnuts, the raisins, and the reserved pasta water. Serve while still warm.

Citrus and Winter Greens Fresh dark kale greens pair well with the citrus and garlic in this recipe. The tamari sauce and garlic make a tasty combination, and the sweetness from the orange juice compliments the kale’s bitterness. This recipe uses a cooking technique called blanching. The vegetables are cooked briefly in boiling water and then submerged in ice water to stop the cooking process. By blanching the vegetables, they retain their color, crunch, vitamins, and minerals.

Ingredients: 4 cups fresh dark kale greens 1 tablespoon sesame oil 3 large cloves garlic (minced) 1 /2 cup fresh orange juice 1 /2 cup gluten-free tamari sauce 1 /4 teaspoon crushed red chili pepper flakes 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds Directions: Clean kale leaves under cold running water, unfurling the leaves to make sure all the dirt is gone. Remove the leafy ends of the greens from the tough stems. Hold the stem in one hand, grasp the leafy part with your other hand, fold it in half, and tear the leafy part away from the stem. Discard the stem and tear (or chop) the leaves into smaller chunks. 78

Winter 2022

Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Add the greens and bring the water back to a boil. As soon as the water is boiling, remove the greens and put them into a large bowl filled with ice and water. This will shock the greens and immediately stop the blanching process. Heat the sesame oil in a large skillet on medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until caramelized. Next, add the orange juice, scraping the sides of the skillet with the liquid to deglaze the caramelized garlic and blend it into the sauce. Simmer until the sauce is reduced by half. Add the tamari sauce and the chili flakes. Continue to simmer until the sauce becomes syrupy. Divide drained kale among four salad plates. Pour sauce over the greens and toss well to coat. Garnish with the toasted sesame seeds and serve immediately.

Marinated Manchego Tapas What is manchego? Simply put, it is a sheep’s milk cheese made in the La Mancha region of Spain. It is aged anywhere from two months to two years. It has a firm, compact consistency with a buttery texture and a distinctive flavor that is well developed but not too strong. In the Cervantes novel “Don Quixote,” the man of La Mancha and his sidekick Sancho Panza spend many pages nibbling on manchego cheese and washing it down with generous amounts of wine. I think they would have liked marinated manchego. I look for cheese that is two or three months old because it has a softer consistency. For the marinade, I use satsuma tangerines, which are available from December through February. They are sweet with an almost tropical flavor. Perfect for this recipe. If you can’t find satsumas, look for super-sweet Lee tangerines. Begin making this a day ahead of time. The prep is elaborate but worth the time and effort.

Ingredients: 1 large head of garlic 1 cup olive oil (divided) 1 /4 teaspoon salt 1 - 2 satsuma tangerines 1 /4 cup sugar 1 /2 cup water 16 ounces young manchego cheese (cut into 1/4 -inch pieces) 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary (chopped very fine) 1 tablespoon fresh thyme (chopped very fine) 1 baguette california101guide.com

Garlic Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut 1/4 inch off the top of garlic bulbs and place them on a sheet of foil. Drizzle with 1/4 cup oil and season with salt. Wrap tightly in foil and bake until skin is golden brown and cloves are tender, 35–40 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Squeeze individual garlic cloves into a large bowl. Set aside.

Satsuma Directions: Using a zester, scrape the peel of the tangerine to get as much peel as possible – but not the white pith beneath. Set aside. Cut 1/2 -inch off top and bottom of the zested tangerine and cut it lengthwise into quarters. Squeeze juice from flesh into a small bowl and set aside. Cut the zested peel into 1/4 inch pieces and place in a small saucepan. Cover peels with cold water. Bring to a boil, then drain. Repeat the process once more to remove bitterness (cold water, boil, drain). Return peels to the saucepan and add the sugar, water, and the tangerine juice. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, occasionally stirring, until peels are soft and liquid is syrupy – about ten minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. california101guide.com

Assembly: Add tangerine syrup, manchego, rosemary, thyme, and the remaining 3/4 cup of oil to the bowl with the garlic. Gently toss to combine. Cover and chill for at least four hours before serving. Bring marinated manchego to room temperature before plating. While manchego is coming to room temperature, gently warm the baguette in the oven. Serve the manchego with the ovenwarmed baguette. Tip: The manchego can be marinated up to five days ahead of time. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. SANDPIPER GOLF CLUB

PHOTOS COURTESY SANDPIPER GOLF CLUB

If you are looking for a terrific winter golf outing in Santa Barbara County, look no further than the Sandpiper Golf Course. Sandpiper is situated right off Highway 101 for easy access and let me tell you, this course will not disappoint. Any avid golfer must play this course, which literally sits on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. In late November, three golfing buddies and I made a 12:30 pm tee time. There was some back-and-forth about whether or not we would be able to finish the round before sunset, which we managed to do, and we had a blast on this challenging track.

in all honesty, is where I should have spent the majority of my time ahead of walking to the first tee. The practice green was lightning fast and that translated to the rest of the course, as I would soon learn the hard way.

When you first arrive at Sandpiper, the staff is there to greet you and direct you to a cart and then the clubhouse. The Sandpiper crew takes their customer service to another level, and they were super helpful getting us checked in. They answered all our golf-related questions. Once we were paid and checked in, we took our bag of range balls, which were included in the green fee, to the range to begin warming up. Even at the range, you get a sense of the sheer beauty of this course. The views of the Pacific Ocean make it hard to focus on getting in some quality swings before your round.

Sandpiper starts with a wide-open par-five, and I was able to find the fairway and then hit a solid second shot, leaving an easy chip to hit the green in regulation. I was left with a 10-foot putt for birdie, but the ball slid past the hole and I was left with a tap-in par.

Adjacent to the driving range is a large practice green — which, 84

Winter 2022

The next three holes went about the same and I stepped to the fifth tee with a score of even-par. Hole No. 5 is a manageable par-five, but my tee shot connected with an overhanging branch so I was left scrambling to save my score. After a lucky 25-foot putt fell, I managed to scramble for par, but that’s where my round started to head south. california101guide.com

otherwise you can easily post a big number on this hole. The next three holes run along the coastline as well, making for some of the best scenery in Santa Barbara County. Once we hit the 15th hole, we headed inland and shortly thereafter wrapped up our round on the challenging 18th hole, a tough par-three over a pond with a slippery green that can make a talented putter look silly. The sixth hole at Sandpiper is a beautiful par-three that hugs the cliffs and runs parallel to the ocean. It is the first hole that really makes you realize just how special this track is. My tee shot narrowly caught the left-hand edge of the green, but the pin was on the far right and a dreaded four putt gave me my first double-bogey of the day. At the turn, I was still having a solid round but my struggles on the greens would continue the rest of the afternoon. Even the short ones left me wondering how far my ball would continue if I didn’t hit the back of the cup. My putting woes were quickly forgotten as we started the back nine. If you have never been to the Sandpiper Golf Course, the 10th and 11th holes are a sight to see. Hole 10 is a tricky par-four with the green overlooking the ocean. I managed to play the hole perfectly and carded a birdie.

As we walked off the 18th green, all I could think about was when I would be back to take another crack at this epic track. One of my playing partners, Rod, summed up his round by saying, “This was one of my favorite rounds in a long time. The course is in great shape and you can’t beat the scenery. Something about this course makes you feel like you are in a different country.” If you are a walker, bring your pushcart because Sandpiper is a great walking course. There are a few hills on the back nine, but certainly nothing that should discourage walking. The pace of play was terrific, and the customer service was some of the best I’ve experienced in a long time. For more information or to make a reservation, call (805) 968-1541 or visit sandpipergolf.com. Sandpiper is located at 7925 Hollister Ave, Santa Barbara.

The 11th tee box is the best place on the course for a group photo, and we took advantage of the opportunity. Number 11 is an elevated parthree with the green literally sitting on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. With massive bunkers on the left, water on the right, and the ocean if you go long, you want to be accurate off the tee california101guide.com

Central Coast Saviors: Animal Rescues By Donna Wolfe

“When we return wild animals to nature, we merely return them to what is already theirs. For man cannot give wild animals freedom, they can only take it away.” Jacques Cousteau California’s landscape is incredibly diverse with its rugged peaks, desolate deserts, sprawling forests, rich valleys, and miles of pristine coastline. And according to the California Biodiversity Initiative, “Among the 50 states, California is home to more species of plants and animals and the highest number of species found nowhere else.” That biodiversity, of course, needs protecting and preserving,

and that’s where animal sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers play a such a vital role. From San Luis Obispo south to Ventura County, the Central Coast boasts a large number of such organizations. But it’s not just the native birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish that need help, so locals have created a number of sanctuaries for domesticated animals, as well. When it comes to animals in need, the Central Coast has dozens of groups ready to jump in and help. Find a sick or injured animal? Want to adopt a surrendered pet? Read on to find out who to contact, and how you can get involved.

The Marine Mammal Center “Marine mammal health, ocean health, and human health are all connected, and we must recognize the only way to conserve the ocean environment is to engage communities to take action,” says Adam Ratner, associate director of conservation education at the Marine Mammal Center. Though its main facility is in Sausalito, it covers more than 600 miles of coastline in California and Hawaii, and also has a satellite operation in Morro Bay. “As the world’s largest marine mammal hospital, the Center advances marine mammal health knowledge and understanding about these links to inform conservation policy, inspire consumer and corporate behavior change, and protect our future, ” Adam added. The Marine Mammal Center’s Central Coast location includes two staff members and up to 100 volunteers. Once they rescue a sea mammal, the Morro Bay team will transfer the animal to the main hospital in Sausalito. Adam, a marine biologist who has worked at the Marine Mammal Center for the past 12 years, wants a chance to help sea life and make sure the marine mammals have a healthy and safe return to the sea. He and his team consider the center as a hospital, and the goal is to get the animals back to their normal habitat.

Rescued more than two decades ago from Montana, Redwings’s mustang herd now enjoys a 20-acre pasture at the sanctuary.

rescued animals come from California, Montana, Arizona, and as far away as Canada. Sara Ruggerone, the equine care manager, says, “I am so grateful to be part of such an amazing organization and have a job doing what I love every day.” She is passionate about horses and knows every horse’s story on their 141 acres of land. Redwings started in Carmel, then moved to Lockwood. Last year, it found a new home in Paso Robles, where it is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. The sanctuary allows horses

to recover and regain health, and retrain horses to find their next home or even career. Depending on a horse’s history and capability, they may become a riding, working, therapy, or companion horse. In some cases, due to their age or illness, they will live the rest of their lives at the sanctuary. “Horse adoptions are slower compared to dog and cat adoptions because when people think of a rescue horse, most think that it can’t be ridden or need to live out the rest of their lives at the sanctuary. That is not true,” Sara says. “I wish

more people would realize how many horses end up in these rescues that have wonderful careers ahead of them. They make fabulous riding horses … They are very versatile. Even if they are not rideable, they make great companion horses or great therapy horses.” Seven years ago, Redwings was accredited by CARMA (California Retirement Management Account) to provide care for thoroughbred horses after they leave the racetrack. Sara explains, “We let them just be a horse and relax and enjoy their surroundings. Then we help the horses with their next phase of life.”

Redwings Horse Sanctuary offers tours at their Paso Robles property, as well as a number of opportunities to help — whether though volunteering, donating, fostering, or adopting.

In addition, the feral cat program is dedicated to help the offspring of unaltered house cats who are lost or abandoned by their owners. The TrapNeuter-Return program (TNR) reduces the number of feral cats, while also allowing them to live out their lives in healthy, managed colonies. Elaine has personally TNR’d more than 300 cats this year. In all, the Feline Network spays and neuters around 1,500 cats yearly.

Feline Network of the Central Coast Feline Network of the Central Coast in San Luis Obispo was founded by Elaine Genasci. Elaine is a world traveler with a history of rescuing cats and dogs from Chernobyl, Ukraine, and French Guiana. “The Feline Network’s goal is to better the lives of cats and kittens through spay or neuter,” she says. She recalls, “It all started when I was at a car repair shop, and I saw the mechanic feeding a feral cat and saw there were kittens!” He agreed to help trap the kittens. Elaine saw that other people working in the same industrial area were also feeding feral cats and kittens. She began sharing notes with the other cat rescue groups and it led to Elaine and the other rescue groups in the area forming the Feline Network of the Central Coast in 2002. The Woods Humane Society in San Luis Obispo are partners with Elaine’s volunteer group. “They are wonderful at helping with the spay and neutering. Woods mostly takes tame cats 92

There is a chapter at PWC called the SLO-RATS (San Luis Obispo Raptors Are The Solution). Christine Johnson, executive director for Pacific Wildlife Care, says, “Our main goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and educate.” She encourages locals and visitors who come across sick or injured animals to contact PWC at (805) 543-9453. For more information on PWC, to donate, or get involved, visit pacificwildlifecare.org.

Pacific Wildlife Care If you find a baby possum, or an injured seagull, or a lost baby skunk in the Morro Bay area, you can contact Pacific Wildlife Care (PWC). They have been protecting and caring for injured, sick, orphaned, pollution-damaged animals and mammals for more than 37 years. PWC cares for more than 200 animal species under permits from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. PWC started because of an oil spill in 1987 that resulted in a number of oil-coated pelicans on the beaches of San Luis Obispo County. Since then, they have grown from a small group of dedicated home rehabilitators into a successful nonprofit organization with a well-equipped rehabilitation center. The PWC has a full-time wildlife veterinarian, a small paid staff, and more than 200 volunteers. The group includes specially trained staff who know how to care for animals in pollution and oil spills on the coastline.

Since 2000, the Ojai Raptor Center (ORC) has been committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing birds of prey. Kimberly Stroud, director and founder of the ORC, started the Raptor Rehabilitation and Release program in 1992 and then co-founded Wildlife Care of Ventura in 1994. Those groups have since evolved into the ORC, which at its Ojai home base takes in between 500 and 1,000 sick or injured raptors each year. The ORC also takes in non-raptor types of birds and a small percentage of mammals. The ORC’s four-acre campus includes a hospital and a medical room, as well as outdoor flight pens and mews for the injured raptors. It includes one of the largest flight pens in California. “Our goal is to rehabilitate and release them to their natural habitat. There are raptors that cannot be released, and they are our Education Ambassadors,” says Kimberly. These animals can’t be released back into the wild due to injuries or other health issues, but can still live happily at the ORC, helping educate people on their species and their roles in the natural environment. Kimberly sees more raptors entering human-inhabited areas,

PWC also has an outreach program to teach children and adults the importance of wildlife conservation. PWC travels with their educational “ambassador” animals called Wildlife Ambassadors to teach how to interact with wildlife. The educators of PWC are available for presentations that educate the public about what they do, provide information about the wildlife living in our communities, and offer ways for us to live peacefully with our wild neighbors. Among its many other missions, the PWC is dedicated to helping business owners learn about the ecosystem and the dangers of poisonous rodenticides to raptors, mammals, Photo by Elizabeth Chouinard domestic pets, and children. due in part to the historic drought, so it’s become even more important to educate the public. “Human interference can harm the raptors. Leave them alone and call our center to find out how they can be helped. This is one of the most needed pieces of information for people to know,” says Kimberly. Like the PWC, the Ojai Raptor Center cautions people on the dangers of using rat and mouse poison, and how it negatively affects wildlife. “We see poisoning of these types of birds because of people poisoning mice and rats,” Kimberly states. One easy alternative to poison? Barn owl boxes! Owls love to eat mice, and this is a sure way to help keep the rodents at bay. You can find directions on how to make your own box on the ORC website. Want to visit the ORC’s campus and its ambassador raptors? ORC offers a handful of Open Houses each year, and is now offering tours for small groups (reservations and advance payment required). Found a sick or injured bird in the Ojai area? Call the ORC Wildlife Hotline at (805) 649-6884 to learn what to do. To learn more about local raptors, donate, volunteer, or schedule a private tour, visit ojairaptorcenter.org.

Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary Back in 2004, Jamie McLeod founded the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary to house displaced and unwanted parrots, and provide a much-needed outreach and education program for the exotic birds. The goal, according to the SBBS website, is to create “a positive, enriching environment for companion parrots, minimize neglect and ignorance that lead to relinquishment, and make space for birds entrusted to us who outlive their owners.”

A visitor to SBBS gets cuddly with Darby, a member of the permanent flock.

“We get parrots that are relinquished to us because the owners had no idea how to care for their bird,” says Jamie. “They have special needs, and create a bond with the person and may be aggressive towards other family members. Have a plan for the bird. Most exotic birds can live up to 60 to 80 years!”

The SB Bird Sanctuary provides its birds with lots of love, care, and space — not to mention plenty of attention!

There are both adoptable birds and a “forever flock” (not adoptable) at their Santa Barbara location. There are more than 26 species of parrots, and they have their own distinct personalities. Parrots are very special, says president of the SBBS board, Leslie Rugg. “They create a lifelong bond with their mate. Having a parrot requires an education of what is really needed to have a parrot in your life.” One of the most intelligent birds, she adds, is the African Grey. “The African Grey is one of the smartest parrots that have critical thinking, highest level of vocabulary, and works with tools … These parrots can mimic a sound and they will check to see if you can mimic it back. That is how they find out if you are smart.” california101guide.com

SBBS is home to dozens of exotic birds, many of whom love to make new friends (both human and feathered!)

The public is encouraged to visit the sanctuary. “They love having visitors,” says Leslie. Reservations to visit their tropical sanctuary are required a week in advance, and SBBS is open every day except Tuesdays.
