Dear Readers,

COVER PHOTO BY Chris Meugniot

By now, we’ve spent more than one-third of the year living in “the new normal.” Or, more appropriately, “the new NOTHING’S normal.” As we send this issue off to the printer, Covid-19 is changing the rules yet again. What is open in one county (or city, or neighborhood) today, may be closed tomorrow. Guidelines and restrictions are changing as fast as the cultural landscape.

So what does that mean for us — a travel magazine? Well, first, we want you to be safe and healthy, and help others do the same. (See helpful links below for updated state, county, and local guidelines.) Second, we want you to explore the awesomeness that is California’s Central Coast, and to support our local businesses — many of whom are mom-and-pop shops, and who need us now more than ever.

As we struggle to navigate these difficult waters, there is still so much to be grateful for, especially here on the Central Coast. Things like our beautiful beaches (page 28), our picturesque little towns (page 7), our challenging links (page 76), and — yahoo! — cocktails to-go (page 68). Then there are our fabulous artists (page 20), our diverse wildlife (page 48) and our bountiful harvests (page 58). Read on and discover even more reasons to love this region. And if you do decide it’s safe to visit them, please keep these things in mind: • Call ahead to the places you plan to visit (don’t just Google). Hours may be restricted, or you may need to make reservations in advance. Some businesses may be closed. Know before your go. CA

Though it’s known for its rolling hills and vineyards, Paso Robles is a surprisingly colorful place.

Discovering Downtown Paso

Rich in history, culture, and wine, Paso Robles is a gem in the Central Coast crown By Donna Wolfe Central California is full of best-kept secret towns. One of our favorites: downtown Paso Robles. Although the town is officially called El Paso de Robles — “The Pass of the Oaks” in Spanish — locals often refer to it simply as Paso. The region has historically been known for its thermal baths, wineries, olives, and almonds, in addition to its nearby Spanish Missions (San Miguel, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, and San Luis Obispo). Through the late 1960s and early 1970s, a new generation of vineyard pioneers settled and flourished in the surrounding hills, bringing acclaim to the rural community. More recently, the New York Times included Paso Robles as one of its 50 top international places to visit. Paso Robles is ranked sixth on the list for its “accomplished wine terroir,” boutique hotels, and restaurant scene. And it’s no wonder, with Paso’s range of more than 300 wineries, craft breweries, distilleries, and eateries. Artist Bruce Munro’s popular Field of Light installation at Sensorio is also attracting new eyes to the area, with its glowing orbs undulating across 15 acres of hillside. And the charming downtown square of Paso Robles is the epicenter of it all. Anchored by the 112-year-old Carnegie Library, Downtown Paso surrounds a large rectangular park, Downtown City Park — the hub of activity year-round. “This is a great community, and we’ve got a ‘can-do attitude,’ and we make sure we get things done here!” says Norma Moye, executive director of the Downtown Paso Robles Main Street Association. For more than 30 years, the organization has helped transform downtown into a thriving economic success. In addition to supporting the city’s businesses, the association has also been instrumental in developing downtown into a tourist destination – and Norma has been a key player in the community. “I am proud of Paso Robles and its community. Plans are to move forward!” Like cities across the globe, Paso Robles has had its challenges with the Covid-19 mandatory shutdown. But in keeping with that california101guide.com

Downtown Paso is characterized by charming buildings surrounding its large, tree-studded square.

“can-do attitude,” Paso has been re-inventing ways for customers to enjoy their favorite restaurants and shops, while adhering to social distancing and public health guidelines. One of those innovations is the use of Parklets, a deck-style seating area that utilizes empty parking spaces in front of restaurants. The city has also implemented a program called “Dine in the Park,” which added extra picnic tables to Downtown City Park where diners can enjoy their favorite dishes and the outdoors. The tables are reserved ahead of time and include a concierge and cleaning crew to maintain hygiene standards. Reservations can be made via Yelp. Other area businesses have adapted to the new guidelines, as well; as such, visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and make reservations. Read on for some of our favorite Paso spots. Summer 2020

Owners Russel and Amy Baker opened in February 2020 and have created an outdoor urban setting that invites customers to enjoy a wide selection of local craft beers, wines, and ciders, in addition to games and live entertainment. The Park Street Gallery By Donna Wolfe

The Park Street Gallery is a fine art and craft gallery in the middle of downtown Paso Robles. Owners Julie Dunn and Peggy Turk, both accomplished artists themselves, wanted to give other Central Coast artists — from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Monterey — a place to show their work.

In recent months, La Cosecha and Il Cortile have begun offering curbside pickup of menu items from both restaurants, which has led to some new and creative ideas.

“Our goal has been to provide a beautiful fine art and fine craft gallery that represents some of the best artists who are living and working right here on the Central Coast of California,” says Julie. “There are many extremely talented artists working in a variety of media, and in a wide array of styles, who have a place with us year-round.”

Julie, who has been working on the Central Coast for more than 25 years, specializes in an unusual and refreshing style known as tempera batik painting on paper. Her current works include desert landscapes, vineyard themes, gorgeous flowers, and endangered and exotic species. Peggy, meanwhile, is a plein air artist and a member of Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, American Women Artists, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and American Impressionist Society, and participates in juried shows and exhibitions.

Thomas Hill Organics brings upscale elegance and locally-minded ethos to downtown Paso.

“We are keeping the pick-up packages for our customers,” says Carole. “Summer will have a new creative menu and brand-new seasonal cocktails!” They have also partnered with two tasting rooms downtown to help with the social distance spacing requirements. The farm-to-table style restaurant is another treasured restaurant in the heart of downtown. Originally conceived by owner Debbie Thomas as an organic Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) showcase of local produce, Thomas Hill Organics has evolved over time into a relaxed, elegant restaurant. It ranks among the top restaurants in the nation for locally-minded ethos — always true to its real, organic, local ingredients, and community-sourced gourmet fare. Debbie has been revamping her menu with ethnic dishes for the summer with her executive chef, Libry Darusman, at the helm. Debbie has been innovative with space limitations after reopening the restaurant’s dining area. Her neighbor, Keller Williams Real Estate, has opened its patio for Thomas Hill Organics customers to dine outdoors on Friday and Saturday nights. Thomas Hill Organics was voted “Best Outdoor Seating” in 2019 by the Restaurant Guru, and Debbie’s summer plans promise to be just as memorable. 10

When South Africa meets Santa Barbara Painter-muralist brings the moods of Africa to the Central Coast By Amelia Rose Simpson Photos by Mariana Schulze

Artist Karen Bezuidenhout can’t remember life without horses. “They were always there. One of my first memories of pain was from a horse stepping on my bare foot when I was five,” Karen joked. Born at a racehorse farm outside of Cape Town in South Africa, Karen grew up riding. “My sister and I would have crazy adventures on our Welsh ponies, falling off and racing around. My sister, who still lives in South Africa, is also a horse fanatic. She’s a huge influence in my life.” Karen, who is self-taught, came to painting later in life when she emigrated from South Africa to San Francisco about 20 years ago with her husband and two small daughters. With her husband at work most of the time, Karen combated the cold, foggy city and apartment life by bringing together all the colors of a South African autumn and putting them into her paintings. “I was dreadfully homesick and in complete culture shock after leaving South Africa. Painting was the only thing that kept me going. San Francisco looked so gray; it felt like all the lights had gone out,” Karen recalled. “I would paint and paint to take the pain away and bring color back into my life.”

stopped chatting about colors and paintings we loved. Because of this, I became more and more confident with my own art.” Bill encouraged Karen to take a stab at painting what she loved most: horses. He recommended she paint a horse, as he put it, “Real primitive-like.” So Karen went home and made a small painting of a horse. “I brought it back to him the next day. Bill was excited by my efforts. It was a brown horse with a very African blue sky in the background. Bill predicted that one day I would be painting horses on 6-foot-by4-foot canvases,” she remembered. “At the time, it seemed impossible.” Karen’s work evolved through Bill. She developed her own distinctive style which she describes as “rustic, organic, and primitive.” Karen achieves this by using acrylic paint, gesso, charcoal, oil stick, and oil pastels to create her paintings. She paints with brushes and also uses her hands directly on the canvas. Karen’s paintings embraced wildness and wide-open space, reminiscent of African vistas, a familiar backdrop that she brings into her paintings even now.

When Karen and her family moved to Santa Trois Chevaux Blanc, 48x48 acrylic and oil stick on canvas. Karen says, “This one is from my imagination. in Scottsdale, Arizona, and at Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, a home and lifestyle store in Montecito. It was a slow start, Karen admitted. “My paintings hung on their walls for six months before anything sold. It was awful. One day a man walked in from NYC and bought three paintings, boom boom boom! After that the floodgates opened, and I’ve never looked back. Over the last 15 years, Pierre Lafond has given me a steady clientele. I can’t even tell you how much they’ve done for me. I am so grateful.” With a nod to her native South Africa, Karen takes regular breaks from painting her beloved horses to paint elephants, giraffes, and zebras. “People are attracted to the romance and energy of Africa,” she shared. Karen’s work is also inspired by her favorite artists: Milton Avery, Henri Matisse, and Claude Monet, as well as her old friend, Bill Woolway. 22

Karen’s newest focus is on creating murals for people’s homes — most recently, for interior designer Anouk Steinke (owner of HÛS store in Ballard). Karen created a scene that included all of Anouk’s horses for her living room. “I love challenges and never say no, so it’s rewarding when people appreciate my work. It’s not easy to put myself out there; it’s like exposing a piece of my soul. In the beginning,” Karen confided, “when I would see a person looking at my paintings I would run and hide. But I taught myself to talk about my work and realized that people really like to know the artist. All I do is tell the truth. I tell it like it is.” Find Karen’s work locally at Upstairs at Pierre Lafond, 516 San Ysidro Rd, in Montecito. There are several beaches with its same name in California, but San Luis Obispo’s Pirate’s Cove Beach stands out. Its unique geology sparks the imagination, as do the numerous trails lining the bluff. You really can’t hit Surfer’s Point on a bad day. Though its shoreline is limited much of the day, it is one of the best spots to watch surfers, kite surfers, and wind surfers. Walk down the connected Ventura Promenade to the Ventura Pier and enjoy the views, brews, and super-fresh seafood (get the fish tacos!)

Ventura’s Harbor Cove Beach is a pleasant place to watch boats come and go while lounging amongst the sand dunes. On clear days you can see details on Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands, the two closest Channel Islands.

Surfer’s Knoll in Ventura is a relatively quiet stretch of beach across from the fun-filled Ventura Harbor. There’s lots of space to spread out, good waves for experienced riders, and plenty of bird watching opportunities.

South of Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard Shores offers a massive stretch of beach and — if you catch it at the right time — some beautiful little barrels. Walk near the jetty to watch boats come and go, or head down the beach for a stroll to pick out your dream beach house.

Where to watch: Wildlife through the seasons By Michele Roest

No matter what time of year you visit the Central Coast, the area is rich with wildlife viewing opportunities. In the summer, take a trip to one of the area’s lakes. Celebrated by anglers and birdwatchers alike, they also offer great camping and recreational activities. Off the coast, summer is the best time for watching feeding frenzies of marine seabirds, dolphins, sea lions, and whales as they feast on migrating species of anchovies, sardines, and mackerel. In the fall, look to the skies. Some of the best Monarch Butterfly clustering sites are right off the California 101 Highway in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties. Don’t miss a chance to see thousands of these colorful insects at their overwintering areas. Winter is the best time to visit the coast and watch shorebirds, or to take a trip to San Luis Obispo’s North Coast to view northern elephant seals. More than 17,000 elephant seals can gather at once in this area!

Lopez Lake is as great for families as it is for nature lovers.

Spring, of course, brings out the wildflowers, but it is also prime time for seeing gray whales. Peak numbers travel north along the Central Coast from March through May. Pick any coastal overlook and scan the horizon for whale blows. As always, be sure to check websites before you venture out. Some areas may still be temporarily closed due to the current pandemic. 48

FALL Monarch Butterflies

• Coronado Butterfly Preserve: Located in Goleta, Coronado is protected open space and links the Goleta Monarch Grove, Ellwood Shores coastal bluffs, Santa Barbara County Park, the Devereaux Slough, and the beach. Plan to go for the day, but save your butterfly viewing for mid-day when the temperature reaches its peak.

Don’t miss the fall migration of Monarch butterflies. They arrive at wintering grounds in late October and remain until February.

Beautiful and distinctive, it’s hard to miss these large, orange and black lepidopterans. Western Monarchs are found from the California coast to the Rocky Mountains and northern Washington. These colorful insects participate in a massive migration, spending fall and winter in California and Mexico. The number of Monarch butterflies is declining rapidly due to human destruction of their critical habitat and climate change; the species is in danger of going extinct. A Monarch butterfly on native coyote bush. Don’t miss an opportunity to witness this spectacular natural phenomenon! Great places for autumn Monarch viewing: • Camino Real Park in Ventura: This large grassy park is easy to find. A large grove of Eucalyptus trees hosts Monarch butterflies that cluster together at night. As the morning sun reaches them, warming the air around them, they take flight, seeking nectar and moisture.

The recent drought weakened and killed several trees in the Goleta grove, so some of the trails through the groves have been closed. The City of Goleta cautions that due to this, visitors enter at their own risk. But even if you don’t go on the trails, there are exhibits where you can learn more about the lifecycle and migration of the Western Monarch Butterfly. Getting There: Free parking for the Coronado Butterfly Preserve and the Goleta Butterfly Grove is available at the Sperling Preserve at Ellwood Mesa Open Space on Hollister Avenue. • Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove: Located in San Luis Obispo County, this is one of only five sites in the state that has counts of over 10,000 butterflies annually. It generally has one of the largest overwintering Western Monarch populations, although numbers have dropped significantly in the last two years. Docents provide interpretive walks and maintain a small gift shop.

Getting There: Camino Real Park is located at the corner of Dean Drive & Varsity Street in Ventura.

Getting There: Take the Highway 101 exit at Grand Avenue to reach Highway 1 and Pismo State Beach. The grove is at the south end of Pismo Beach intersection with Highway 1.

WINTER Elephant Seals in San Simeon

By Phil Adams

Loud, boisterous, and massive, elephant seals are fun to watch as they jostle for position on the beaches near San Simeon.

Elephant seals are the largest seals in the northern hemisphere, and their pupping and breeding grounds are located 10 miles north of Cambria on Highway 1. These animals will surprise you with their heft; adult males can reach 15 feet long and weigh up to two tons, and females reach nine feet and 1,200 pounds. They haul out on remote beaches near San Simeon to give birth to pups and mate. During their peak, more than 17,000 elephant seals crowd onto less than 10 miles of coastline. Peak pupping is around the second week in January. Female elephant seals nurse their pups for about a month, then mate with males. Peak mating is in mid-February. Cliffs above the beach provide a remarkable place to watch these fascinating mammals as they jostle — and often battle — for the best spot.

Thousands of elephant seals haul out on beaches north of San Simeon between December and March. The Piedras Blancas and the Piedras Blancas Light Station can be seen in the background.

Getting There: The elephant seal viewing area is located on the west side of Highway 1, just 5 miles north of Hearst Castle State Historical Monument. For more information, visit the Friends of the Elephant Seal website at elephantseal.org

Wintering Shorebirds Shorebirds flock to California’s Central Coast in December, and many spend their winters along the shore. Winter offers the best opportunities to see and photograph wintering shorebirds, including curlews, whimbrels, sandpipers, gulls, and plovers. Many coastal parks offer delightful opportunities for bird and wildlife viewing: • The Ventura City Promenade, Ventura River, Estuary Trail, and Ocean Shore Trail offer 5.5 miles of trail along coastal inlet, estuary, dune, and riparian habitats. It’s a wonderful place to see a diversity of birds, including shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds. SPRING Spring Bloom California wildflowers are well-adapted to fire and flood. When fires ravage natural areas, they stimulate seeds that may have been dormant in the soil for decades. Good winter rains can lead to super-blooms — explosions of color that can sometimes even be seen from space. Summer Eats: Choosing and preparing seasonal produce

By Randy Graham

Summer is an exciting time of year to be a cook. Markets and gardens are bursting with gorgeous fruits and vegetables in their prime. The weather is perfect for getting outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. Farmers markets offer ripe fruits and vegetables and provide an opportunity for you to meet friends and perhaps make new ones. The recipes that follow are selected to share with family and friends. Make a double batch of grilled peach, avocado, and jalapeño salsa and then take some to the neighbors. Wow your family with a late Sunday brunch of tasty and filling croissant breakfast sandwiches. My easy chicken stir fry is a complete dinner in a skillet and goes from prep to table in 30 minutes. Dust off your picnic basket and, among other goodies, include a healthy potato salad. My version is made with Yukon Gold potatoes and boasts a dressing of white wine vinegar, fresh lemon juice, and Dijon mustard. No mayonnaise! Include my fresh summer salad with your next barbecue. It features avocados, garden-fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil. Also, try my punch that is not too sweet and has just enough fizz to quench your thirst.

Grilled Peach, Avocado, and Jalapeño Salsa This is a fresh salsa with a taste of summer grilling. What could be better? I think I’ll serve it once with roasted jalapeños and then again with the firm, fresh jalapeños sliced super thin. The smokiness of the grilling process plus the combination of the sweet peaches and the spicy jalapeños goes nicely with taco filling. I’ve even used it as a condiment with crispy beer-battered fried avocado tacos. Give it a try!

Ingredients: 2 ripe avocados 2 ripe peaches 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice (divided) /4 cup shallots (chopped fine)

1

2 garlic cloves (minced) 2 jalapeños (seeds removed and sliced thin) /4 teaspoon salt

Directions:

halves to a plate. While the peaches are still hot, they can be easily peeled. Allow them to cool before dicing. Use a large spoon to scoop the avocado flesh away from the peel.

Once the grill is hot, add the avocado and peach halves, cut side down, and close the lid. Grill for four minutes. Use grill tongs to carefully remove the peach and avocado

In a large bowl combine the remaining lime juice, shallots, garlic, jalapeños, and salt. Dice the avocados and peaches into small pieces and fold into the salsa. Cover and chill before serving.

How to choose fresh summer produce

Bright color

Heavy weight

Most of us know instinctively to avoid bruised or blemished produce, but there is much more involved in the art of choosing fruits and vegetables. These general tips will give you the basic skills you need to hold your own at your favorite farmers market.

After you’ve checked for bruises, blemishes, and pests, look for fruits and vegetables with the brightest, most inviting colors. The tastiest, vine-ripened produce should be vibrant, with its skin entirely saturated with color. If the item has a dull color or whitish sheen, that means it is either not fully ripe or was deprived of sun or nutrients.

Generally, you want to pick produce that is the heaviest relative to the rest of your options. Light weight produce is more likely to be dry and mealy, but heavier produce will be juicy and crisp. The best way to tell is to pick up two similarly sized fruits, one with each hand. After you’ve tried a few, it will be obvious that certain fruits are much heavier than the rest, and

and peaches in half lengthwise and remove the pits. Brush a mixture of one tablespoon olive oil plus one tablespoon lime juice on the flat sides of each half. Make sure they’re coated generously to avoid sticking to the grill.

Fresh Mozzarella Summer Salad Mozzarella cheese became widespread throughout Italy in the eighteenth century, before which it had only been produced in small quantities. I’m glad it is available on California’s Central Coast. There is nothing better than a fresh tomato-based salad with fresh mozzarella cheese. Fresh mozzarella is a soft, mild white cheese that originated in Southern Italy’s Campania region. I use Galbani Mozzarella Fresca (Ciliegine). With the addition of a couple of ripe California avocados, you’ve got a flavor combination that can’t be beat. With ripe red tomatoes, you’ve got a colorful salad that not only looks impressive but tastes wonderful as well.

the same size as avocado cubes)

Directions:

8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese balls (cherry size)

Gently add avocados, tomatoes, and mozzarella to a salad bowl. Set aside.

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon red wine vinegar

2 ripe avocados (peeled, pitted, and cubed)

Salt and fresh-ground black pepper to taste

3 medium tomatoes (cut into wedges

2 teaspoons fresh basil (chopped)

Mix together olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour over avocado mixture and toss lightly. Garnish with fresh chopped basil and serve at room temperature for best flavor.

Fragrant aroma within the batch can be very informative. those are your best bets. Because the best produce is moist and juicy, it should also be perfectly plump. This means that it will be firm to the touch—think crisp and succulent—but not hard, squishy, or limp. While the perfect amount of firmness will vary for each type of produce, comparing california101guide.com

For soft fruits, gently picking a piece up should tell you if it’s too soft or hard. For vegetables with stalks like carrots and broccoli, be sure the ends don’t give too much when you try to bend them (but don’t try too hard or they might snap).

Probably the most telling test of the quality of fruit is how it smells. Unripe fruits smell like nothing, or at best, the cardboard it was packed in. But ripe produce almost always smells faintly of how it is supposed to taste. Hold the part of the fruit that was attached to the stem close to your nose and breathe deeply. Compare a few of your options. The strongest smelling fruit will be the ripest and ready to eat immediately. If you’d like your fruit to last continued on next page for a few days, it is Summer 2020

Croissant Breakfast Sandwich Looking for a new, quick, and tasty breakfast treat this summer? Look no further. This sandwich has it all: fluffy scrambled eggs, sharp cheddar cheese, fresh avocado, and spicy Peppadew pepper slices. It is better than fast food drive-thru sandwiches and far more nutritious too!

Ingredients: 6 large eggs 2 tablespoons milk /4 cup unsalted butter

1

/4 cup extra sharp cheddar (grated)

3

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 4 croissants (split in half and lightly toasted) /4 cup Vegenaise (or sub mayonnaise)

1

1 avocado (sliced) 2 ounces Peppadew peppers (drained and sliced thin)

best to go with a piece that still smells good but has a less overwhelming scent. Here are more specific tips for some of my favorite summer-fresh veggies and fruit.

Whisk eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook eggs, stirring, until mostly set but still runny in parts, about four to five minutes. Remove from heat and mix in cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover and set aside.

ripened at home but avoid rock-hard ones. Also, avoid avocados with cracks or dents.

Artichokes

Corn

Choose globes that have tight leaves and feel heavy for their size. The leaves should squeak when pressed against each other.

Choose corn with bright green husks and moist, but not slimy, silk. Peel back the husk to ensure the kernels are plump and not dry (or rotten).

Avocados Choose avocados that feel slightly soft to the touch. Firmer avocados may be 60

Directions:

Summer 2020

To make sandwiches, spread a tablespoon of Vegenaise on the bottom half of each croissant. Layer avocado slices on top of the Vegenaise and then layer the peppers on top of that. Place one quarter of the scrambled eggs on each sandwich and top with the other half of the croissant. I like to serve this with fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Eggplant Choose eggplants that have smooth, naturally shiny skin and feel heavy for their size. When gently pressed, flesh that gives slightly and then bounces back indicates ripeness. Unripe flesh will not give, while overripe flesh will remain indented. Also, smaller eggplants tend to have fewer seeds and are less bitter.

Healthy Potato Salad I remember mom making potato salad at the first hint of summer. The kitchen was steamy and hot with boiling potatoes. How she peeled them while still hot I’ll never understand. She was amazing. I can still taste her salad to this day. My recipe uses roasted potatoes which add an interesting flavor and texture. My spicy, no-mayonnaise dressing gives this recipe a healthier profile than the salad I enjoyed as a kid. It is the perfect salad for your summer picnic. Make this the night before and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to pack up and go.

Dressing Ingredients: /4 cup white wine vinegar

1

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard /4 teaspoon sugar

1

/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

/2 teaspoon coarsely ground sea salt

1

Fresh ground pepper to taste 3 tablespoons shallots (chopped for garnish) 2 tablespoons fresh Italian parsley (chopped for garnish)

degrees. Wash potatoes and pat dry. Cut all potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Place potatoes in a large bowl and toss with olive oil and salt. Place potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet with shallow sides. Roast in the center of the oven until tender, about 30 minutes.

8 small purple potatoes

Dressing Directions: Whisk vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, and sugar. Slowly drizzle in olive oil and continue whisking until dressing is smooth and creamy. Set aside until potatoes are cooked.

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Salad Directions: Preheat oven to 350

Combine all potatoes into one large bowl after roasting. Cool for about 20 minutes, then add dressing and toss gently. Sprinkle with additional salt and pepper, if desired. Garnish with shallots and parsley before serving.

Old School Fruit Punch

Here’s an old school summer cooler that is sure to wet your whistle on a hot summer day. I’ve been making it and serving it to kids of all ages for over 40 years. It is a great thirst quencher and a superb addition to your traditional beverages at your next barbecue or picnic.

Ingredients: 6 ounce can frozen orange juice concentrate (thawed) 6 ounce can frozen lemonade (thawed) 1 quart chilled apple juice (or cider) 2 quarts chilled ginger ale Directions: Combine the all ingredients in a large (about one gallon) punch bowl. Stir to

combine and chill until ready to serve.

Leeks

Oranges

Peaches

Choose firm leeks with tightly-rolled tops. Slender leeks tend to be younger and more tender, while larger ones with rounded bulbs tend to be older and woodier.

Generally, the tastiest orange—whatever the variety—will be firm, full-colored, smooth, and thin-skinned. As you would with most fruits and veggies, steer clear of those that are too soft, show even the smallest signs of mold, or feel as though they have bruises.

When a peach gives off a sweet aroma, it’s a good sign that it’s ready to be enjoyed. No smell usually means no taste for many varieties. On a warm, sunny day, you should be able to smell the fruit just by standing near it. The scent can be impossible to resist! If the peach is firm to the touch, it’s not ready. Wait until there is some “give” when it is gently squeezed.

Easy Chicken Stir Fry

3 cloves garlic (minced)

set aside.

Here’s an easy to prepare dish that goes from prep to table in less than 30 minutes. It has an abundance of flavor, and perhaps best of all, it is low in calories. I especially like the Asian-flavored brown sauce.

1 tablespoon ginger (minced)

Stir fry ingredients:

1 1/3 cups chicken broth

In the same pan, add one tablespoon of oil and all the mushrooms. When the mushrooms start to soften, add broccoli florets and stir-fry until the broccoli is tender. Remove cooked mushrooms and broccoli from the pan and set aside.

1 pound boneless chicken breast (cut into 1-inch cubes)

1

3 tablespoons oil for frying

Directions:

Salt and pepper to taste

In a large pan, on medium-high heat, add one tablespoon of oil. When the oil is hot, add the chicken and season with salt and pepper. Sauté until cooked through and browned. Remove chicken from pan and

1 pound broccoli (florets only) 8 ounces mushrooms (sliced thick) Brown sauce ingredients:

Tomatoes Choose tomatoes that are fragrant, smell earthy at the stem end, and feel heavy for their size. Avoid tomatoes with wrinkled skins. Watermelon A sweet and ripe watermelon should feel heavy for its size. This usually means that 62

Summer 2020

2 teaspoons sesame oil /3 cup tamari sauce

1

1 tablespoon brown sugar /4 cup flour

1 teaspoon black sesame seeds (for garnish)

it’s full of water and, therefore, juicier. If you turn a watermelon upside down, you should find a yellow spot, which is also known as the field or ground spot. A large, yellow spot indicates that it spent more time ripening on the vine and should be sweeter. A whiter spot suggests that it was picked too soon and didn’t reach peak ripeness.

For the sauce, add the last tablespoon of oil to the pan and sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant. Add the remaining sauce ingredients (sesame oil through flour) and whisk until smooth. Return the chicken and vegetables to the pan and stir until thoroughly heated. I serve this over noodles but it is just as fresh and tasty all by itself. E H T G N I BR E M O H R BA WITH S L I A T K C CO TO-GO

With the uncertainty of the times, one thing is for certain — it is nice to have a drink every now and then. The year 2020 has thrown us several curveballs, but it’s also thrown us a gift here in the Golden State: to-go cocktails. This is the first time in California history that cocktails have been legally permitted to be sold for off-site consumption, creating an exciting new option for imbibers. Of course, there are restrictions for to-go cocktails. All drinks must be sold in sealed containers, for instance, and some restaurants are only offering to-go cocktails with a food order. And by now, we all know that restrictions and health guidelines may change at any time. Even with this in mind, to-go cocktails are helping to bring the bar experience home for your enjoyment. Here are a selection of bars packing up some of the best to-go flavors to be had on the Central Coast, whether in the comfort of your home or (hopefully soon) back in the bars themselves:

Each to-go cocktail from S.Y. Kitchen is made with the same quality ingredients and careful preparation that their restaurant is known for.

S.Y. Kitchen In the rolling hills of Santa Ynez, S.Y. Kitchen has been revered for their farm fresh ingredients and Italian-Californian fusion cuisine. Their well-crafted dishes and cocktails have long set the standard of quality in Santa Ynez, and they continue to set the bar during this time. They were the first restaurant in the area to offer to-go cocktails through a storefront market that also sold items like fresh pasta and hummus for take68

away. S.Y. Kitchen is now back open for business, and while the market is no longer operating, they are still serving the bottled cocktails for takeout on request. For their to-go selection, bar director William Perbellini made available four of their most popular cocktails, including two of their agave-based drinks: the Cilantro Margarita, and the El Viejo, a refreshing mixture of mezcal, Fresno chiles, and the spicy gusano salt with fresh lime and pineapple juice. Valley Girl is one of their best sellers and provides

the refreshing flavors of vodka, basil, and fresh strawberry-lime juice. The Green Garden is another summery favorite and blends Plymouth Gin with muddled mint, cucumber, and lime. William emphasizes that they have kept precisely the same process and quality ingredients for each drink so that guests get the same fresh and flavorful experience the restaurant is known for. S.Y. Kitchen is at 1110 Faraday St, in Santa Ynez. For more and to order: (805) 691-9794 or sykitchen.com california101guide.com

Sidecar Cocktail Co. In quiet San Luis Obispo lies a creekside restaurant and bar, Sidecar Cocktail Co. While normally they have a focus on cocktail bars for events, weddings, and private parties, Sidecar has been using this time to also provide their specialty cocktails for pick-up. In addition to a range of margaritas and tiki drinks, Sidecar brings their own style to the range of cocktails on the menu. The Desperado is a lively and sweet drink that blends a house-made horchata and cold brew coffee with rum, bourbon, and a sarsaparilla tincture. The Red Carpet combines vodka and lime juice with a house-made blood orange, vanilla, and thyme shrub. The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire has a stronger character, composed of a house-made Pimms and bourbon with fresh lemon, grapefruit, and cinnamon syrup. Each of their offerings can be ordered online for pick-up in 16 oz or 32 oz bottles. Sidecar Cocktail Co. is at 1040 Broad St, in San Luis Obispo. The Disco Infiltrator uses a base of Plymouth Gin and Christian Drouin Calvados that is then infused with fresh strawberries and balanced with the herbaceous Suze liqueur and Pineau des Charentes — a French fortified wine from the Cognac region — in place of vermouth. Shaker Mill The colorful Shaker Mill delivers a Cuban flare and to-go drinks on State Street in Santa Barbara with a selection of their popular cocktails available for take-away. In addition to providing safety during the pandemic, Misty Orman-Ristaino, who co-owns Shaker Mill with her husband Brandon Ristaino, sees the to-go option as helping customers who may want another drink but still have to drive home. The couple also owns the other popular cocktail bars, The Good Lion and Test Pilot, and hope to soon be selling to-go drinks from each of their locations. As of now, only Shaker Mill is serving drinks to-go – for curbside pickup with a food purchase – from the attached restaurant, Cubaneo.

can’t easily make at home. Fortunately, Pearl Social is now offering any of their cocktails in a take-home mason jar. For each of his creations, Gavin seeks out fun, playful, and unexpected flavors that still lend themselves to being drinkable and familiar. To wit: The Harvest Moon, which captures the flavors of a southeast Asian salad by bringing together mezcal, unaged French Armagnac, and pear brandy with a cilantromint cordial, lime, and a dash of soy sauce. One key factor in Gavin’s to-go offerings is being able to deliver the same experience that customers are used to in the bar. For his take on the 1980s Pornstar Martini — a blend of vodka, passionfruit, and vanilla that is traditionally served with a side shot of sparkling wine — he serves the to-go version with its own mini mason jar

On their website, they host a rotating selection of up to 10 of their other popular shaken or stirred cocktails in bottles. Explore the flavors of Cuba and the surrounding areas with exotic drinks like their Porto Guava or Medianoche. Cigar Box is a smokey blend of mezcal, smoked chile and lapsang tea, with cognac and lavender adding a smooth fragrance. The Mango Lassi pays homage to the Indian restaurant that once inhabited the building and brings together vodka with mango, coconut, and pistachio, with a hint of cardamom and lime in the finish. Bottled cocktails are made fresh daily and in limited quantities, however they will soon have the stirred cocktails on a draft system, allowing them to fill to-go orders at any time. of the Prohibition era and modeled their menu after the most popular drinks from that time. Since then they have become known for their range of historic drinks, like the Sazerac, or the Old Fashioned, on which Jared flames the orange peel to give it a robust character. While the main lineup of cocktails reflects the flavors of Prohibition, Jared also produces a range of unique infused spirits to give his specialty concoctions their own edge. Pineapple-ginger rum, strawberry-basil vodka, and even pineapple-mango habanero tequila for spicy margaritas — they all bring something new to the glass. Jared makes each of the syrups and infusions in-house, using ingredients foraged from his own garden and a network of neighbors’ yards. Ryder Berries also happens to be just next door, providing Jared with a constant supply of fresh berries for the bar. With an eye for history and a taste for the distinct, the menu features a blend of classic and unique offerings. While the bar is known for its live music and warm interior, they continue to make any cocktail to order in a to-go container, with the restaurant’s full menu available for take-out at the bar as well. california101guide.com

S

oule Park Golf Course in Ojai. - My first stop was the Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai. It had been a few years since I had played Soule Park and quite honestly, the last time I played there was quite forgettable. That was then, this is now.

SOULE PARK GOLF COURSE Soule Park Golf Course is one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to public courses on the Central Coast. Despite an early tee time of 6:40 am, I got to the course in time to hit a small bucket on the driving range which was in great condition with lots of personal space. They also have an adjacent putting green and chipping area. From there, I walked to the first tee and let me tell you, golf just doesn’t get much better than the first hole at Soule Park. The elevated tee, with water on the left and an incredible view of the rest of the course, is a superb way to start your day. And not to mention, the course is in amazing condition. The fairways and greens were smooth and well maintained, and unlike most courses I have played since the stay-at-home order was lifted, the bunkers at Soule Park are in great shape. Like all courses, the rakes have been removed as a precaution, but despite the obvious footprints here and there I still played out of the sand because the traps were in such good condition. After wrapping up a solid front nine, the 10th is another fun elevated tee shot. The par-3 has water on the right, and also makes life hard if you go left or long. My back nine got off to a nice start as I put my tee shot within six feet of the pin and drained the putt for a rare birdie. The back nine at Soule Park is almost spiritual as you take in the panoramic views of the mountains and the creek that runs through the course — which still had flowing water as an added treat. As I walked up to the par-5 18th tee, I was disappointed california101guide.com

that my day would soon come to an end. After a solid drive and an even better second shot, I was thinking birdie to finish my round. Sadly, my birdie putt burned the edge of the hole and I had to settle for a par, but it was still a great round overall. The staff at Soule Park were awesome and they did have food, drinks, and carts available. I chose to walk the course and while there were a few hills, for the most part it was quite manageable. Simply stated, Soule Park is a true gem. General manager Keith Brown and his staff have done a remarkable job PHOTO BY CAMERON HURDUS revitalizing the course! I give Soule Park five stars. O

livas Links Golf Course - Next up was Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura. This was my first visit to this course, and I was left asking myself what took me so long to play this terrific track? Like Soule Park, Olivas Links is in pristine condition right now. I played the champion tees which play 6,530 yards and I found the distance to be ideal for posting a low score.

OLIVAS LINKS GOLF COURSE

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY SOULE PARK GOLF COURSE

My front nine went extremely well (for me). I managed to log par on five holes and birdie one on the front and, much to my surprise, I hit every fairway which made my day a lot of fun. Olivas Links is forgiving if you’re in play, but if you are not accurate, your round can take a dive in a hurry. The bunkers are a challenge, as you would expect in links golf. My one double-bogie on the front came on the par-4 sixth hole, when I ended up flirting with a bunker and lost. The sand was in better-than-average condition but a flubbed first attempt cost me a stroke. Nonetheless, I was able to put it behind me and scramble to a par on the seventh hole.

like they were a good speed and read true. I also walked this course, and it was an easy stroll. I give Olivas Links five stars as well! Olivas Links Golf Course is at 3750 Olivas Park Dr, in Ventura. For tee times and more: (805) 677-6770 or olivaslinks.com

Everything about Olivas Links was fun and it was one of the best golf experiences I have had in a long time. My early tee time did not allow for much of a warm-up, but the course has a nice practice area which I will take advantage of next time I play there. The staff were extremely helpful, and the course marshal even took time to walk me to the first tee to explain the course rules — and give me a few pointers, which certainly came in handy throughout the day. The back nine started off well, but then the drives that found the fairway all day suddenly started going a little wide, and my final score reflected my late round errors. But, I absolutely loved this course. The greens were in great shape, and I felt 78

B

uenaventura Golf Course - The nearby Buenaventura Golf Course is another golf course I had heard a lot about, but never had the chance to play until recently. I booked my tee time online as a single and ended up finding an afternoon time, pairing up with two friendly regulars who helped me navigate my round.

BUENAVENTURA GOLF COURSE

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY BUENAVENTURA GOLF COURSE

I played the Blue tees, which only played 5,521 yards. I hadn’t done much research on the course going into the round, but standing on the first tee I quickly determined that accuracy was going to be the key. Buenaventura is short and tight with fairways close to each other, so going wide off the tee was not an option. Given that I am not a long hitter, it was quite different to have second shots that only required a wedge to the green. Despite not playing all that well, I did manage to post a very low score (for me) on the front and I had multiple makeable birdie putts. This Ventura course was in good shape, and I appreciated the fact there were several holes where water comes into play. One of my favorite holes was the par-3 fifth hole, which surrounds the green with water hazards. Sadly, a three-putt ruined my chance for at least a par, but I left wanting another crack at that hole. After posting a low score on the front, I headed into the back with high hopes, but things quickly went south. The afternoon winds started to pick up, and suddenly shots that were landing on the green were off the mark. And remember that water I was excited to navigate on the front nine? Well, the love affair didn’t last long as I plopped three balls into the water, effectively ruining my chance at an all-time low score. california101guide.com

Despite the up-and-down round and the compact course, I had a lot of fun playing Buenaventura. I’ll admit, I was on the lookout for wayward shots more than I would normally be because of the smaller course, but this round provided new challenges and shots I don’t see in most of my rounds. Buenaventura has a practice green, but only has a couple of nets to hit into if you want to get in some practice swings. Like the other two courses, the staff here were great to deal with and helped with all my questions. Given that this course is so short, it was an easy walk. But for those who prefer to ride, carts are also available. I’ll play Buenaventura again soon. I give this course four stars. Buenaventura Golf Course is at 5882 Olivas Park Dr, in Ventura. For tee times and more: (805) 677-6772 or buenaventuragolf.com With the need to continue social distancing and the fact that other sports are struggling to restart, more people are turning (and returning) to golf for recreation and exercise. The Central Coast provides lots of options for golfers, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a better value than Soule Park, Olivas Links, and Buenaventura. All three courses visibly care about the safety of their golfers and staff and I felt very comfortable in all three settings. You can bet I’ll be back on all three courses in the very near future!
