Welcome! And it’s the dry season apparently! After spots of rain for May I’m hoping for a beautiful June full of clear blue skies and cool weather. The great thing about Cairns though, is that whilst a trip to the reef is better on a good day, you can appreciate the beauty of the rainforest no matter what the weather! Backpackers come to Cairns in droves, and many of you are looking for work. Check out the advice by Rebecca from Job Snap to help get you employed quicker without having to resort to desperate pleas on Gumtree.com for work. Also in June (for anyone looking to get out of Cairns and experience something off the beaten track) is the Cooktown Discovery Festival, celebrating with a re-enactment of Cook’s landing. For anyone that is sick of big cities and wants to see a more isolated part of Australia (without going inland), then hire a 4WD, head up the coast road and drink with the locals. As it’s no longer stinger season, head out to the beaches! Palm Cove, Trinity Beach and Yorkeys Knob are favourites… or if you have wheels, head up to Port Douglas to Four Mile Beach. Why not use the voucher in this mag and head to Green Island for some idyllic beach time relaxing on the yellow sand and swimming/snorkelling in the clear aqua water. Enjoy your time in Cairns travellers, stay safe but most importantly, have FUN!

ORIENTATION

ORIENTATION

ATTRACTIONS

No matter where you are staying in Cairns, it is easy to find your way around. To the east is the sea, Fitzroy Island, Green island and the Great Barrier Reef, to the north: Port Douglas, the Daintree and Cooktown, to the west: the lush Tablelands, and outback Queensland and to the south: Mission Beach, Townsville and Airlie Beach. In the heart of Cairns is the impressive Esplanade, with professional skate park, beach volleyball and the spectacular lagoon: a backpacker hotspot and hub of activity. Come down to the lagoon on the weekend for free entertainment and markets, stroll the Esplanade taking in the chilled out vibe, or just sit and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes and restaurants that line the marina. Cairns is typically the start or end of the East Coast road trip, and there is no shortage of drinking holes, with bars and nightclubs dotted everywhere in the city for you to mingle and meet other travellers.

Aside from the lagoon and parklands, there are a heap of art galleries in the CBD, the Cairns Historical Museum, markets, cinemas, and screeds of shops. The main shopping centre – ten minute walk from the Esplanade – is Cairns Central, and is located on McLeod Street (head down Shields street from the Esplanade and you can’t miss it!) Getting out of town a little there is the Botanic Gardens, Northern Beaches, Crystal Cascades (freshwater swimming spot at Redlynch), AJ Hackett Bungy & Minjin, Cable Ski, Tjapukai, Skyrail, Kuranda Scenic Railway and more!

CITY LAYOUT The city itself is very plainly laid out in a grid, with parallel roads. The main roads in and out of Cairns are Mulgrave Road – which heads south becoming the Bruce Highway, taking you all the way to Brisbane. The other is Sheridan Street, which heads north to our beaches and becomes the Captain Cook Highway. From the beaches you can continue north to Port Douglas, the Daintree or Cooktown. Or if you head west at Smithfield up the Kennedy Highway it will take you to the Tablelands and along the Savannah Way to inner, outback Queensland… all the way to Darwin.

TRANSPORT Aside from hitting the pavement, the cheapest mode of transport around Cairns is with the Sunbus network. Timetables and prices are available at the Sunbus website: www.sunbus.com.au, and the bus depot is located on Lake street near Woolworths and City Place. Another great way to get around is on a scooter from Cairns Scooter and Bicycle Hire, prices range from $35 for 1-2 hours to $50 a day for 4+ days, it’s an economical way to get around outer Cairns. Visit www.cairnsbicyclehire.com.au for more information. Though probably the best way to get around is by car, if you can, get a couple of fellow travellers together and hire one. It’s cheap, gives you the freedom to explore more further reaching destinations like the Tablelands, has heaps more storage and a most importantly, a roof (needed in the wet season). For a whole week it can cost as little as $80 per person. Finally, the local taxi service is Black and White Taxis and their phone number is 131 008, with multiple ranks around town.

In its sixth year running at Gilligan's, The Sinners Ball is now nationally recognised for it's naughty nature and extraordinary entertainment. 2012 brings a point difference in the Gilligan's event calendar, as the venue is now home to two annual events, a G-Rated light hearted fairytale themed event that falls in March and The Annual Sinners Ball in June each year… taking you down the path of risqué and naughty, showing you the fantasy, fetish and bondage side of the Gilligan’s events menu for the year. Opening this years Sinners Ball, in conjunction with Obsession Ink, Gilligan’s bring you Body Modifications; with skin suspension; the act of suspending a human body from hooks that have been put through body piercings. These piercings are temporary and are performed just prior to the actual suspension. And this is just the beginning… tune into Facebook (www.facebook.com/gilligans.spot) and the blog (www.theGspotcairns.com) in the lead up, as yet again they undress the secrets of the Sinners Ball. WhatsOn! The signature event in the annual Cairns Ukulele Festival and a great opportunity to purchase a unique piece of uke art. Featuring dozens of ukuleles, creatively handdecorated by established and emerging artists, this fundraising exhibition will both delight and excite. No brief was given: the artists were invited to use their own creative talents to develop a unique uke creation. The result is a very eclectic collection with something for all tastes. All ukuleles will be sold through a silent auction. Bids commence on opening night and close at 8pm on Sunday 8 July (access after 5pm on this day only). All profits are being donated to COUCH, a local cancer charity. Ash Grunwald reverberated in the rainforest on his last visit to Cairns, now he brings his tunes to Tanks! His new album, due for release in May, traverses many a tale and is considered his most internal album to date. ‘It’s some of my most personal songwriting,’ Ash confesses. Trouble’s Door found its life in the fiery breath of injustice; showing Ash’s frustration of severe political and environmental mismanagement. The music traverses many a tale as well; the blues propelled by driving dancefloor rhythms, buoyed by hip hop beats and slammed by the dubstep crunch. It’s been a massive 10 years since the release of his first blues record, with countless shows and awards since then. Support by Moondogs Gypsy Blues Band. Margaret Upton is a self-taught, Cairns based artist who has been developing her painting practice for over twenty years. The works in the exhibition reflect Upton's longstanding interest in portraying people at moments when they are at their most unselfconscious or introspective. Margaret Upton: Body Language will be on display form the until the 24th of June. Robert Baines is one of Australia's foremost artist goldsmiths. This outstanding collection of works

comprises jewellery and large, complex wire works that combine precious metals with plastic and powder-coated elements. Robert Baines – Metals, will be on display until the 24th of June. Cairns playwright Tony Robertson has created three very sweet, funny characters you can't help warming to. Errol is single, living with his mother and working part time as a spruiker. He's searching for love in all the wrong places. Alison is Errol's mother, she's still holding out hope that Errol will grow into his father's shoes, if only she could remember where she left them! Meet Melody, a self professed 'clothes whisperer', she works at Lowes. When she's around the world is shinier. She just might be the key to this romantic comedy. Mix this with a cast made in heaven, beautiful direction from Andrea Moor and an amazing set, lighting and sound design and you have the delightful 'Intimacy'. A JUTE Theatre Company Production 'INTIMACY' by Tony Robertson // 8 - 23 June 2012 // Tickets $18 - $40 // Venue: JUTE Theatre, Centre of Contemporary Arts, 96 Abbott St. Cairns // More info & to book www.jute.com.au The Cooktown Discovery Festival is an annual event held in Cooktown, Far North Queensland. It is held in June each year to celebrate the arrival of Lt. James Cook on out shores in 1770 and his interaction with the local aboriginal people, the Guugu Yimithirr and the Kuku Yalanji. The three day Festival includes a multitude of events – the Reenactment, The Grand Parade, The Welcome to Cooktown Extravaganza, musical entertainment, nmovies in the park, markets, rides, exhibitions, fireworks, dinners, entertainment, events and MORE! 24 Backpacker careers

BACKPACKER CAREERS – Emma Day from England

Works For: Dreamtime Travellers Rest Hostel I'd been working ‘on the road' as an overland tour leader in Sub-Saharan Africa for the past eighteen months, and having gotten (and recovered from) five bouts of malaria in ten months, decided that some time and travel spent in an country with a less lethal mosquito population would be a good idea. So I chose to come to one of the few areas of Australia where dengue fever is prevalent - Cairns! Before I headed out here I checked out jobs available on Gumtree, and saw that there were a lot of tourism/ hospitality jobs along with the usual fruit picking/ banana humping opportunities. I'd previously travelled quite a bit in Australia – camper vanning from Adelaide to Cape Trib and heading across the outback in a car and experiencing The Ghan, and thought a few months in tropical paradise would be ideal. I was lucky enough to come to Cairns having already made contact with potential employers and two days after arriving had a successful trial with Dreamtime Hostel – so I stopped looking any further. I work as a front of house/ reception/ all rounder at the hostel, which means I get to spend my day chatting with fellow travellers, going on tour' tasters', and generally being social. Highlights from working here so far have included swimming with turtles and sharks, seeing the reef from a helicopter and small plane, watching jumping crocodiles and

Christmas on the beach in 30 degree heat. My job includes tour promotion, housekeeping – amazing for overall fitness, especially in the current 90% humidity – driving and managing the hostel reception at weekends. No two days are the same, my customer service skills have improved, as has my 'game face', and I've developed skills I never thought I would, such as basic plumbing! I live on site, meaning that in the evenings I can chill out with guests, and with my housemates, who are equally keen travellers, meaning we compete to talk the most about our top stories to date. The hostel is family run, and the staff are incorporated into that family, and really looked after - I feel really lucky to be here and I don't want to leave! The best advice for people wanting to work in hostels is to keep checking job websites as adverts are regularly posted, and also to be pro-active and drop your CV into hostels when you arrive in town. In general for front of house positions, hostels seem to look for people who can commit for a few months, but lots also offer 'work for accommodation' which is a good starter option, and leaves you free to explore the area during your time off in return for a couple of hours a day. Above all, be flexible – split shifts are standard in tourism, and in smaller hostels, if you aren't willing to muck in and get your hands dirty then you're going to struggle to be part of the team.

The Winner! Norwegian backpacker Eline Bekkelund

Cairns Epic Adventure

For Norwegian backpacker Eline Bekkelund, her experience of North Queensland was a whirlwind of activities – experiencing the best this region has to offer. Thanks to the Backpacking Cairns Association, who facilitated the competition and the many companies and business that supplied the prizes, Eline was able to have a trip of a lifetime!

What set everything in motion was when Eline attended the Adventure Travel and Backpacker Expo in Sydney in October – which she found out about through Facebook. “Even though I didn’t have any money to travel at the time I was really excited about it [the expo]”. Entering in the Cairns Epic Adventure Competition, Eline had to write 50 words or less why she should win the trip. “I guess I got lucky and hit the right words. My entry was - I am new to Australia and want to experience it all! I have always dreamt of skydiving and bungy jumping, seeing the Great Barrier Reef. This trip is diverse, involving so many things I've only been able to dream about for years. I'd love to make my dreams reality!” Hailing from Hamar in Norway, the only place in Australia that Eline had been to before her Epic Adventure was Sydney where she was living and studying. Having not had much time to travel, winning the competition gave her a head start. “I couldn't believe I actually won this amazing trip. When it started to sink in all I could do was smile, and I called so many of my friends just to be able to share my excitement. I've never done any of the things I'm getting to do on this trip before, so it really is a dream come true. The trip of a life-time!”“I heard about Cairns when I first arrived in Australia, and I've wanted to come here ever since. I've never been to the tropics before, and I've heard about the Great Barrier Reef and the Rain forest, and I have wanted to see those things. By reading about the place I realized there were many things I would be able to do up here that I've never been able to do before despite my many travels, and coming up here before leaving Australia became a goal of sorts. This area started to represent many of the things I've always wanted to do, especially after the expo in Sydney when I got more information about the opportunities.”

RELOCATIONS2GO

The better way to travel

Want to embark on your own adventure down the East Coast but don’t have much cash? No worries! Relocations2Go are specialists in relocations for RV and cars, and it’s a great way to travel from city to city at affordable relocation prices whilst still having fun. Relocations2Go is a relocation service offering considerable discounts for online RV and car reservations, from as little as $1* per day. It’s always a challenge for rental vehicle companies to organise the return of their vehicles after one-way hires, and the demand for cars and RVs varies from location to location throughout the year. From local events such as festivals or sports, to travellers seeking a warmer, northern climate or escaping the wet season in the tropics – rental companies have to relocate their RVs and cars accordingly to meet local demand. They can offer huge discounts to customers wanting to travel to the area to which they need to move the vehicles. Acting as the vehicle relocator allows opportunities for real savings, in the same way as a standby airfare but without the uncertainties; and allows travellers to use the significant money they’ve saved (by taking advantage of the discounts offered) for other travelling expenses. Relocations2Go is the online, experienced, car/RV savvy, go-between. They match customer to customer: rental car and RV customers wanting to embark on a road trip, with customers wanting to move in the direction that the vehicle needs to go (between a large number of cities in Australia). It’s as simple as that, and everyone saves money. Relocations2Go are renowned for their cheaper prices, excellent product knowledge based on 30 years experience, 24 hour service 365 days a year and free call numbers to help you every step of the way. As well as Australia, Relocations2Go operate in New Zealand, Canada and the US. Be impulsive! Make your reservation for next week, next month or even tomorrow! Save time and money by booking online, with Relocations2Go, the reliable, customer focused vehicle relation company.

“Waters with alluring hues of turquoise and aquamarine and an undersea world of colours that artists only dream about, this is the Great Barrier Reef.”

The Great Barrier Reef is of such pristine condition that it was listed by the World Heritage Trust as a protected site and is therefore managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority to ensure that its beauty is maintained for many generations to come. Visitors in their thousands come to marvel at the spectacular sight seeing opportunities that is unique to our area. Off the Cairns coastline are outer edge ribbon reefs which can be seen by taking one of the daily outer reef cruises offered by local operators. One of the best ways to view the reef is to take a low flying scenic flight over it, especially at low tide where you'll see the breadth and diversity of this great living wonder. The waters off the great barrier reef provide the world's busiest and most varied marine habitats. Marine life is in abundance. From the many species of coral to the sought after Black Marlin and all sizes and species of fish inbetween. The varied colours of the reef's fish and other marine life will astound the visitor with colour combinations

that artists haven't even dreamed of. Although the reef stretches more than 2000 kilometres offshore from Queensland, it is only at Cape Tribulation, just north of Port Douglas that the reef comes right to the shore and meets the tropical rainforests of the Wet Tropics. The Reef has over 1000 islands which are easily accessible from North Queensland and coastal cities like Cairns and Port Douglas are idealistically positioned to visit these. The coral islands are very popular tourist attractions, the closest to Cairns being Green Island and Franklin Island. Whilst these islands are great for one day trips (having the shortest commute), the outer reefs are by far the more spectacular. Consider an overnight trip for the ultimate experience to the outer reef. All the dive boats are luxurious and the staff have extensive experience of the Great Barrier Reef. If you’re just not adventurous enough to don the mask and dive.... you’l be surprised how much you can see from just snorkelling. You can even hear the parrot fish munching on the coral!

Barefoot Tours – watch out for killer cows!

On a day where rain clouds hung in the air, and threatened to pour, I jumped on Shikaka (our trusty ride for the day) and we heard her story as we buzzed around Cairns picking up the rest of the group. Then we started on our trip heading south from Cairns to Gordonvale. We checked the Gilles highway on the way past (that is the usual route back home) and it was still closed due to the heavy rain. Matty already had a plan for an alternative route as we trundled down the pot-holed Bruce Highway, listening to his great knowledge on butterflies, crocs and the how the landscape has changed since Gondwanaland. Time flew and before we knew it we were at Josephine Falls. Unfortunately, because of the recent heavy rain Josephine Falls was too flooded to swim in (especially as it is prone to flash flooding). However, marvelling at the sheer volume and power of the water was just as fun! After all our video and photo taking at the falls, we enjoyed the yummy morning tea that Matty had prepared for us in the picnic area: fresh exotic, local fruit, muffins, banana loaf and local tea, coffee and hot chocolate! When we were full to bursting it was time to get back on Shekaka and head to our next waterfall destination: Millaa Millaa Falls. As a local, the drive up the Palmerston Highway is

my favourite drive with my favourite scenery in the whole of the Cairns area, and I couldnʼt get enough, looking out the window and drinking in the beautiful pockets of rainforest that covered the undulating hills far into the horizon. After chatting to Matty about killer terrorist cows, and his experience working just about everywhere: white water rafting, bungy jumping etc. we arrived at the breathtaking Millaa Millaa Falls – the iconic waterfall experience. Only a few of us jumped in and swam out to behind the waterfall and although the water was a little chilly, it was really refreshing and staring back at the group through a curtain of water was awesome. Then after photos we headed to the Millaa Millaa Hotel for a pub lunch. With yummy pub grub in a typical Aussie, small town pub, and two complimentary jugs of beer placed on the bar, we all started to get to know each other better. We then headed off to Dinner Falls and Mount Hypipamee Crater. The area is know for Cassowary sightings, but alas, we were unlucky that day. However, after staring down the crater, we were all intrigued with the huge groups of hairy caterpillars that collected in groups and moved in single file along the railings. Dinner Falls, although spectacular with the recent rain, was a bit too muddy and flooded for my liking hence why we didnʼt get in.

The tour would normally continue to Lake Eacham and then down the Gillies Range, however, due to the Gillies being closed we had to choose between going to Lake Eacham and then heading down the Kuranda range or heading to Kuranda to see the mighty Barron Falls in flood. As most in the group were too cold from the rain to swim, we decided to go to Barron Falls. It was incredible! As a local, I had never seen Barron Falls raging like it was! We had afternoon tea of chips and dips, coffee, tea and cakes looking out over the falls and after a little rain shower and huddling under umbrellas, the sun came out and created a rainbow in the mist from the waterfall. Bundling back into Shikaka, we wound down the Kennedy Highway back to Cairns where we dropped everyone off with a hug and a wave and ended the tour. It was such a great day, I had heaps fun and loved getting to know the group and hearing all the local knowledge from Matty. The areas that we visited are my favourite part of the Cairns area, and the tour is a great opportunity to see a lot of the area, without the stress of driving yourself. I highly recommend this tour! So go on, book a tour so Matty can afford to buy a pair of shoes!

Looking for work? The first rule that you need to remember is that you need to approach the job-hunting process professionally. You may be travelling and having the time of your life, but you will be applying to work at businesses – that take what they do seriously and so should you. JobSnap are a relaxed recruiting business, however, we still have standards and expect that employees will meet these standards. Top three tips for obtaining the role that you want are: - Make your resume stand out from others. Don't include oodles of generic information that you have copied and pasted from the internet. Spend some time writing your resume and get a friend with good English skills to check over it. - Dress professionally for the interview. Don't assume that your bikini top doubles as a bra. Have an interview outfit – this can be just basic black pants and an inexpensive white business shirt. Tidy your hair, wear make up (if applicable!), and wear decent shoes. Shorts, flip flops, singlets and swimmers are not acceptable for an interview. - Don't lie on your resume about your visa or intentions. If you have no intentions of staying in Cairns for twelve months, don't include it. When writing your resume make your experience stand out – resumes about self-promotion are ineffective – essentially, get to the point. You are trying to get dedicated recruiters, business owners and managers to read your resume. They are busy and you need to stand out from the crowd. Resumes that stand out to recruiters are well formatted: using lots of bullet points or tables, justifying the text, using the same font throughout, use of bold and italic fonts where appropriate, have sufficient gaps between blocks of information and are two to three pages in length. Things to look out for when preparing your resume: Make your purpose match the job. Iʼve seen so many resumes where people are applying for a retail job but their resume says that their objective and/or purpose is an administration role. Body of resume Write short, specific and easy to digest bullet points about the duties and responsibilities you held. Using an old job description to assist you in this can be very helpful (but don't copy and paste! Personalise the information). An example of a mechanic's resume may read: Responsibilities Senior mechanic in a workshop that serviced private vehicles. The Workshop employed two qualified mechanics and an apprentice mechanic. The majority of customers were private customers and a high level of service was required. (see how this is personal - it talks about the structure of the organsiation and the customers of the organisation).

Duties: - Carried out routine service inspections on vehicles. - Performed maintenance checks on oil levels, the brake system, steering mechanisms, and wheel bearings - Was responsible for the management of the Apprentice Mechanic. I was responsible for the initial recruitment, the induction and ensuring that the apprentice completed all on the job training modules - Responsibility for ensuring that all staff correctly completed job cards for billing Achievements (these are personal and can be as simple as) Successfully mentored apprentices from recruitment to completion - the workshop had never hired apprentices before. The employer won an award in the local 2012 training awards for providing a positive working environment. Cover Letters or the 'pitch' section in the JobSnap website Too many people forget about attaching cover letters to their applications. Sending a resume without a cover letter is the equivalent of randomly posting your resume to a corporation, with no explanation. Where do you think that piece of mail ends up? What do you include in your cover letter? Once again. Make it simple. - Identify your transferable skills eg. You are a chef looking to get out of the trade. For the past 20 years you have been working as a chef. However, the past five years you have been responsible for ordering, designing menus, creating a website, and implementation of a customer loyalty card. In your cover letter you need to highlight the transferable skills. If you are applying for a job as a retail shop manager, you need to highlight your staff supervision skills, computer skills, up selling skills, stock control skills. Why should they hire you? - Write essential information in your letter that the recruiters may need to know – eg: your willingness to relocate or fly for interviews, expert knowledge, vast experience. Good luck! Rebecca Munro is the Chief Job Snapper at JobSnap.com.au – an online recruitment company. Here are some tips from the Wet Rez desk:

1

AVOID taking photos of the first bit of reef or fish you see, Have a look around the area and size up the opportunities.

2 3

TRY to keep the sun behind you

4

COMPOSITION is important, especially for reef landscape photos. Select a colourful or vibrant coral as your focal point.

5

FOR FISH or turtle photos, try to capture the subject in the centre of the frame. The best way to do this is to predict the path of the animal and let it swim into the frame, rather than "Chasing it down".

GET as close as possible to the subject. (please disregard this advice if you are trying to capture a picture of a great big hungry looking shark!)

Cameras are available for hire or you can buy, and there's a great selection of cameras and accessories for novice and professionals. You also receive a CD with all your pics which will be the best souvinir of your trip to the reef. See Wet REZ on Shields Street, near the Esplanade (opposite McDonalds/Lagoon).

LEARN TO DIVE WORLDWIDE

An SSI scuba diving course will not only give you the chance to discover the Great Barrier Reef during your holiday, but will give you a licence to dive around the world… forever! There’s the Learn to Dive course, which is a qualifying course that will give you certification as a recreational scuba diver. On completion of the course, which takes an average of 4 days, you will receive a licence that is valid for life, and is recognised all around the world. The course usually includes a few days completing pool dives and knowledge development sessions and finishes with a minimum of four open water dives on the Great Barrier Reef. There are also “Referral Learn to Dive” programs, which give you a chance to get your open water licence in two parts – theory at home and practice here on the Great Barrier Reef! Once you have all the beginner stuff out of the way, doing an Advanced Open Water course is the important first step in continuing your dive education. It is designed to give the newly certified or not so experienced diver added confidence and enjoyment in their diving through additional skills and training. And just to make it that little easier training material is available in 25 languages. Your fun star ts online! Complete your dive theory for free by clicking on this button INSERT PICTURE OF BUTTON at www.diveSSI.com You can complete the theory component at your own pace in the comfort of your own home or during your travels before you get to the Great Barrier Reef so once you arrive the water awaits.

Fur ther Training The Stress & Rescue course is where the diver moves beyond recreational diving. By expanding their knowledge of the “science” aspects of diving and rescue/emergency techniques, the diver is now equipped to appreciate and understand the importance of training relevant to diver safety and incident management. On to the “serious stuff” – the Dive Guide and Divemaster courses are the first level of the “professional” ratings. On successful completion of this program you will be qualified to supervise recreational diving activities, either boat or land-based. It also allows you to act as an Instructional Assistant, and is the minimum rating required for employment in the diving industry. For those of you who love diving so much, don’t miss this opportunity to make a career of it. Scuba Schools International have employment opportunities available in many countries around the globe for good quality Instructors so delay act today! Instructor Training Course (ITC) is a two-week program, combining a mixture of training in the pool and classroom academic modules presented by yourself, the Instructor Trainer and fellow candidates. So whether you want to take up a new hobby, or carve out an entire career, these courses are designed to take you there. SSI is a worldwide certification program that has a global network of dive operators for all diving activities.

Day cruise with

DOWN UNDER CRUISE & DIVE I have been out to the Great Barrier Reef a number of times, and I’m being completely honest when I say that the trip with Down Under Tours was the best! My trusted travel partner, Mark, and I boarded the boat at the reef fleet terminal on a gorgeous sunny, calm morning wedged between two week-long bouts of rain.

As we boarded the friendly crew and ‘Elvis’ greeted us, and who made us all feel welcome and excited about the day ahead. Heading out to the reef we enjoyed tea, coffee and biscuits whilst the crew dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s about the day’s proceedings. We slathered ourselves with sunscreen and enjoyed sitting on the deck at the bow of the boat, soaking up the sunshine and letting the wind whip through our hair as we powered further out through the shimmering turquoise water to the reef. Having done an introductory dive three times already I was really looking forward to getting back under the water. The instructors: Sam and Snoopy (aka Kim), who have 20 years of diving experience between them, explained the diving process in a very informative, engaging and humourous way to put our minds at ease. Donning some very sexy bright blue, Lycra stinger suits, we headed out to do some snorkelling while we waited for our groups turn to go diving. Whilst hoping to see a stingray, shark or turtle, we only managed to spot Bicolour Parrotfish and marvel at the array of coral. Despite the recent, heavy rain causing limited visibility, we were still able to see heaps, and even just the suns rays lighting up the underwater landscape was beautiful. Soon it was our turn, so we put on our weights, air tanks, fins and goggles to get under the water with our guide and instructor, Sam. We were helped to the edge of the boat wearing the heavy equipment and sitting on the edge, feet dangling in the water, I felt a little nervous. The nerves soon disappeared as we dove down to explore the underwater world beneath us. It was great seeing Nemo, taking in the watery silence with the occasional sounds of bubbles and water swishing around us, and the constant in and out of Darth Vader breathing through the tank. It was fun touching the smooth cold sea cucumbers that sit on the sand, and the silky purple inside of a giant clam

(and taking lots of photos). The twenty minutes or so underwater went by too quickly! Back at the surface we snorkelled some more, hearing that others had seen a black tip reef shark. After the snorkelling we tucked into a yummy BBQ lunch buffet of sausages, steak, prawns, fish, salami, pasta salad, potato salad and more! We relaxed on the boat after lunch, lazing in the sun and taking in the gorgeous day and then headed to the second dive location. As we arrived a turtle popped its head up to say hello, which was awesome to watch! I tried to get my fins and snorkel on as quickly as I could to get in the water for a swim with the turtle, but alas, he was gone by the time I’d jumped in. After snorkelling for a bit to try and find him or possibly a shark, Mark and I couldn’t resist doing another dive. This time, Kim took us out, and with our experience from the first dive, we had more freedom to explore and get snap happy. The second reef was more interesting with its cliffs and valleys of coral to investigate, more fish (including what looked like a dwarf spotted cod, and angelfish), and different kinds to those we had seen previously. Again, it was over too soon and before we knew it Kim was leading us back to the surface. We snorkelled some more, trying to dive down and hold our breath to get a closer look at (and take photos of) an anemone and some more clown fish. We heading back to the boat for some juicy fresh fruit to take the salty seawater taste out of our mouths, as the crew started winding up the days activities. On the way home we were subjected… or rather, delighted to a performance by Elvis as we munched on cheese and crackers and drank wine, reflecting on all that we had seen under the water and singing along to ‘It’s a Wonderful World’. The crew were so friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting to Elvis and also to Sam about his fascination with sharks and his many diving experiences. The whole crew were efficient and organised, but relaxed, laid-back and fun which made it easy to kick back, chill out and fully enjoy the day! As I said, after four different companies and trips out to the reef, Down Under Cruise and Dive, was the most enjoyable experience! View more photos! The number 1 way to see the reef!

VIEW FROM ABOVE If there is one thing about the destination of Cairns, the scenery stands out as simply magnificent. What’s more, the sheer size of the Rainforests sweeping down to the Coral Sea, when viewed from above, will take your breath away. In fact, there is no better way to ‘visit’ the Great Barrier Reef than to actually view it from the sky. This is why you will notice the postcards of the area are nearly always featured from above. If you were ever going to take a ride of you life, then by all means, Cairns is a first class area to try a helicopter ride. The thrill of the ride alone is an adventure, however, the views will give you

picturesque memories forever. Heli Charters are available for a quick tour around the city area (10 minutes), to complete visits to the outer barrier reef. A 20 minute rainforest tour, takes you up the Barron River to the spectacular falls then returns you along the coastline, or you can have your helicopter lift you over the reefs and join Osprey V for lunch and diving or snorkelling. This is by far a ‘complete’ way to really see why The Great Barrier Reef is recognized as the eighth wonder of the world - from above and from under the water. Highly recommended.

WAXING while Travelling When travelling, you are meeting others all the time, and although you’ve been wearing the same few sets of the clothes for the past six months, it’s nice to still feel great on the outside. In Cairns you can bronze up, unwind, de-fuzz and get bikini ready at great low prices by professional, trained staff. The Wax Pot and Tanning Studio is a relaxed beauty salon that is easily accessible, located on Sheridan Street in the heart of the city. They offer a range of treatments from waxing, tanning, facials, eyelash and eyebrow tints, massages, pedicures and manicures, and great packages. All the salons have an upbeat, funky atmosphere whilst the friendly staff tend to all your beauty needs. One of the most popular treatments are Henna Tattoos. You can choose from a wide range of designs or create your own! The tattoo lasts on average two weeks, and are applied by piping a natural Henna mix (that is made on site) onto the skin in your chosen design. So give them a call, and get your body beautified!

ACTIVITIES

photo Jungle Surfing in Cape Trib...

JUNGLE SURFING I am unashamedly afraid of heights… always the one in a group with a cold sweat, the sinking feeling in my stomach and shaking hands. I am the one that will never go first, but could never go last, and I always look like Iʼm not really enjoying myself whilst everyone else is pumped up with adrenalin. However, my trusty travel buddy Mark convinced me that all would be well, so we drove up to Cape Tribulation on a gorgeous sunny day (stopping at the pretty Port Douglas for brunch) to try Jungle Surfing. We were lucky enough to experience the opening day of The Snake House - the new meeting point for Jungle Surfing Tours. Itʼs a great place to meet the others in your tour, grab a cool drink, browse some of the souvenirs and check out the snakes. Itʼs also in the perfect position for those scared of heights (like me), that need a quiet drink after the tour (right next to PKʼs Jungle Village). Soon it was our turn and we all got in the minivan to head up the steep hill of heavy rainforest to start the tour. At the top we came to a little hut and were greeted by Evan from New Zealand and Leigh from the UK. After putting our belongings away into lockers and getting harnesses and helmets (Mark was ʻTarzanʼ and I was ʻStifflerʼs Mumʼ), we started the short walk up to the first platform where Evan went through all the safety instructions. Before I knew it Mark, rather, Tarzan had been pulleyed up to the first platform and it was my turn. With my fear of what was to come I assessed the first section, and how far I was above the ground and decided that it wasnʼt as bad as I previously thought, and started to relax. Then came the wire to the next platform, which sent the butterflies in my stomach off again. Thankfully, itʼs done in pairs so Tarzan and I were able to go together as I got

used to being so high off the ground. The views of Sorrow Hill out to sea and the gorgeous blue water and rainforest stretching underneath us was breath taking. We even saw a Ulysses Butterfly flitting through the rainforest trees as we took in the amazing view. Evan told us some of the history of Captain Cook and Cape Tribulation, as well as information about the flora, fauna and history of the rainforest. Heading to the next platform, we were stopped in the middle of the wire so we could look down through the canopy to the rainforest floor caused by a little stream cutting through the trees. I looked briefly which was enough and instead concentrated on looking at majestic Sorrow Hill and at the tallest part of the rainforest – the canopy – that surrounded me as I dangled in mid-air. It was great to get a sense of how high we were and Tarzan was having a ball filming and taking photos, but I was glad to get to the next platform where we chatted to Leigh about what it was like to work for Jungle Surfing. Next came the hard part – on your own with no hands! I managed to let go with one hand, but as hard as I tried, the other seemed super-glued to the green rope. I at least got a photo to prove I wasnʼt a total petrified! The last part to the final platform was the best (but I donʼt want to give away too much!), and although I was still nervous, I actually enjoyed the last section so much I was laughing as I grabbed Leighʼs hand to pull me up onto the final platform. Jungle Surfing was a great experience and the whole Jungle Surfing team including Evan and Leigh were great. The tour was excellent, and I highly recommend it as a unique and fun way to see the Cape Tribulation rainforest – the oldest continually living rainforest in the world!

Ocean Safari has reported that guests have been lucky enough to spot turtles, dolphins and even Dugongs over the last two months. Deano, Operations Manager at Ocean Safari said: “With the conditions being so good this wet season we’ve been spotting so much out on the reef, sometimes you don’t even need to get off the boat to see the turtles!” The Daintree rainforest is home to many unique forms of plant and animal life. On most days you can see the rainforest along the mainland beach whilst snorkelling. Your experienced Skipper and Eco Host will ensure that your trip is filled with fun and appreciation of the natural beauty and marine and bird life within this World Heritage area.
