Hydration For Your Health

by Gina Worful- MS, RD

Do you drink enough water throughout the day? Here are the top health benefits of staying hydrated that you don’t want to miss!

Energy

Dehydration is the number one cause of daytime sleepiness. Water is a major component of your blood so if you’re not drinking enough water, you may end up with low blood pressure and fatigue.

Appetite

The hypothalamus controls both signals for hunger and thirst. If you’re dehydrated, you might be getting the wrong signal that you’re hungry all the time when you really just need water.

Skin Health Your skin is a supple organ that needs plenty of fluids. Dehydration can accentuate wrinkles and lines.

GI Health Water helps to keep you “moving”. Drink water to help absorb your nutrients and ward off constipation.

Boost Your Metabolism

Drinking water can increase the metabolism by up to 30% for 40 minutes after drinking 500mL of water. Drinking 2L of water can increase your metabolic rate by 400 calories per day!

Optimizing Your Health

All of your body parts need water! From your brain, heart, digestive tract, liver, skin, joints… the list goes on! Stay hydrated to keep everything functioning properly.

Things that affect water needs:

•Intake of diuretics like alcohol and caffeine •Humidity/heat •Exercise/amount of sweat produced •Altitude •Pregnancy or breastfeeding •Illnesses like diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or frequent urination

Lamb Loin Beluga Lentil For Beluga Lentil Ragu

• 1 tbsp grape seed oil • ½ cup shallot, diced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • ½ cup celery, diced • ½ cup carrots, diced • 1 tbsp tomato paste • 1 tbsp porcini mushroom paste • 1 cup red wine • 2 cups lentils • 1 quart water • 2 tsp sea salt • 1 cup fava beans for garnish In a medium sauce pot, over medium heat, add the grape seed oil. Add the shallots, celery and carrots and saute for approximately 3-5 min, or until the shallots are translucent. Add the garlic and saute for one min. Add the tomato paste and the mushroom paste. Saute for one min or until the tomato paste turns brick red in color. Add the red wine and reduce by half. Add the lentils and the water and simmer for about 10 min. or until the lentils are just tender. Season with the sea salt.

by Executive Chef Curtis Cooke For the Lamb :

• 2 lb lamb loin • ¼ cup grape seed oil Preheat oven to 350˚. Sprinkle the lamb loin with salt & pepper. In large saute pan, over high heat, add half of the grape seed oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Add no more than 2 lamb loins to the pan at a time. Sear the loin for about one min on all sides. Transfer seared loins to baking sheet & roast in the oven for approximately 7 min.

How much water do I need? The average person

loses about 10 cups of water per day just from breathing! So if you’re not replacing your fluids, know that you’re not optimizing your health. A good rule of thumb is to take your weight in pounds and divide it in half. That’s how many ounces per day you should aim for. If you only drink water when you’re thirsty, you’re waiting until you’re dehydrated!

In the garden

Permaculture design: to catch, store, slow & sink water. Our cuilinary gardener has created an herb spiral, which slows, sinks and spreads the water that falls, in a more useful and practical way. In the dryer months the spiral functions to stay moist with the water it does receive and can have a dual function of staying cooler with more mass when the temperatures rise. The herb spiral also maximizes the growing space in a small area and is a focal point for the space.

Planted around the spiral in beds that also catch the run-off water are fava beans which are a springtime delicacy. When the fava beans have finished growing for the season, the space will be replanted with a summer crop. The herb spiral is also planted with thyme which likes the cooler weather of the late winter and early spring, but is abundant and green year round.

Float Into Fitness with helpful insight from the Cal-a-Vie Fitness Team

When it’s time to beat the heat and get in shape for summer, water is where it’s at. Whether you prefer to keep your hair dry or dive in head first, our elite staff is here to meet all your aquatic needs. In addition to keeping your body operating accordingly, water can provide an invigorating and unique platform for achieving your fitness goals. Exercising in water provides a low impact, even resistance through your full range of motion. This means that simple movements - such as kicking or paddling while swimming - produce more overall benefits than if you were doing them on dry land! Ever wonder why it feels so great to jump into the water? Water activities are wonderful for your internal organs and lymphatic system. Buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure actually help your blood flow back to the heart. They also aid in the process of lymphatic drainage. This is why you feel more refreshed than exhausted after being in a water class! More than just swimming! Always seeking to provide the finest options for our guests, Cal-a-Vie is excited to introduce several new aquatic classes this season. Here are a couple that will help you remember to pack your suit for your next stay. Board Body Bootcamp FitMat fitness is a fun challenging way to get fit.
