Pride over Profits Epitomizes the Heartbeat and Mission of Advantage Backhoes, LLC By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor / Photos provided by Advantage Backhoes, LLC and Brian Hoover, CMS, LLC

THE BEGINNING & TRANSITION YEARS

Travis Snyder joined the carpenter's union right out of high school and went to work as an apprentice for a well-known concrete contractor out of Riverside for four years. Snyder started on the ground working as a laborer. The company would dig their own footings, and they journeyed him out as an operating engineer at just 19 years of age. "It was a pretty unique situation. I don't think I even got the chance to put on my tool bag. It seems like I had a shovel in my hand one day, and they told me they were going to train me to operate a backhoe the next day," says Snyder. "I operated several different makes and models of backhoes over those four years with the concrete company. However, I was never really impressed with any of the backhoes until I got on that John Deere 310 for the first time. I fell in love the moment I took control of that tractor and hoped I would be lucky enough to own one someday." Snyder's big day finally came when he decided to go it alone and become an owner-operator in 2007. "When I began contemplating starting the business, it seemed like everyone was refinancing their homes to buy boats, motorcycles, 6

or other toys. I had bought a small cabin in Crestline in 2006, and instead of buying toys, I decided to pull $45,000 out, which was all the equity I had at the time, and buy a backhoe and truck," remembers Snyder. "I purchased a 2006 John

COMPAC T EQU I P MENT / 2 0 2 2

Deere 310 backhoe with 2,400 hours from RDO in Prescott, Arizona, and a flatbed truck, sight unseen, from Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers in Perris." Snyder had just put up everything he had in the world, and he was ready to go C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

all-out, including working as much as 20 hours a day at times if needed. Along with starting Advantage Backhoes, LLC (Advantage Backhoes), a sole proprietorship, in 2007, Snyder also made another giant leap of faith. He married his wife, Krystin, in 2008, and together the couple would share the dream of having their own successful business and eventually starting a family. "A lot was going on 15 or so years ago, and it was and still is a very exciting adventure CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

each day with both the business and our family," says Snyder. As the company grew, it became apparent that Snyder would need assistance with the administrative side of the business. "I covered the field during the day and worked in the office at night estimating projects and handling accounts. Krystin decided to quit her job in 2009 to take over the office and administrative work like certified payroll, insurance, compliance and release documents and mounds of other paperwork," continues Snyder. "We had secured our C-12 contractor's license and became certified as a small business enterprise. Now, all we needed was for our ongoing hard work to pay off with enough revenue to keep everything going." According to Snyder, the first few years were tough, but Travis and Krystin were used to hard times

as they both came from humble beginnings. "We just kept on grinding and pushing to find state and federal-funded jobs and stay on the prevailing wage side. We did a lot of schools and military work in the beginning and worked anywhere our small group of clients needed our services," says Snyder. "Some early jobs included trenching work at a wastewater treatment plant in Brawley and another in Oceanside, a couple of student housing projects at UCR, and in Carlsbad for a contractor renovating a high school stadium." Snyder recalls the contract that jump-started his business back in 2010. "We were invited to participate in two separate projects up at 29 Palms and that is where we worked almost every day for the next five years," says Snyder. "This was a $200 million BEQ (Bachelor Enlisted Quarters) new build for the military

and we ended up digging every square foot for around 15 different trades. We did the footing excavation, electrical duct banks and plumbing, and other underground civil work. We still had only the one John Deere backhoe when we started this job, but when we left, we had grown to five backhoes, a mini excavator, four full-time operators, and three full-time laborers." Advantage Backhoes was off and running with the momentum from the 29 Palms projects to push the company to new heights. In the early years, Advantage Backhoes was performing all mechanical, electric and plumbing (MEP) trenching work for utility contractors throughout Southern California. "When we witnessed our clients bringing in other subcontractors to do the sawcutting and demo of asphalt and concrete, we decided to take that on as well and so we purchased saws and breakers and added that to our list of services," says Snyder. "Then it occurred to us that we could also do the patching back of asphalt and concrete, and so we hired concrete finishers and asphalt laborers and additional machines like rollers and compactors." The company continued to expand and grow to where they were doing $2 million to $3 million grading jobs for companies 8

like McCarthy, DPR, Swinerton and PCL. "Today, we do turnkey civil work with bulldozers, loaders, Super 10s, and water trucks. We rarely sub out any of our contract work, and when it comes to working in and around the dirt, we like to do it all in house."

THE PEOPLE AND THE EQUIPMENT

Snyder explains that he has always been highly selective on whom they have in their seats and whom they let wear their vests. "I've always had the mentality of pride over profits. It is about being the best and treating people fairly. If you do that, everything else takes care of itself. We come across exceptional operators and laborers that we have met over the years, and we stay in touch and have eventually hired some of those individuals," says Snyder. "It is challenging to find the best operators in the business, but we keep looking and never settle for mediocrity. We have very low turnover and take excellent care of our people by ensuring they never sit at home and always have 40 hours a week, and other things like paying them fringe cash and giving them those days off when they request them." Snyder is proud of the company's family-

COMPAC T EQU I P MENT / 2 0 2 2

oriented philosophies and focuses on doing whatever it takes to keep his team members happy. "Our superintendent, Rejean Desrochers came onboard in 2010, and has been with us ever since. Rejean has been a key component to keeping our projects running smooth. Others in our company started as laborers and worked their way up to operators and foremen running some of our largest and most complicated jobs," continues Snyder. "We now have 49 full-time employees with 23 full-time operators, 20 full-time laborers and six office staff members. Our target is to do $12 million in gross revenue each year, and we have met that goal four years running. We will do everything we can to remain at this target area and with less than 50 employees to maintain the small business cutoff regulations." In or around 2011, Advantage Backhoes began adding backhoes and mini excavators in earnest to their expanding fleet. "In 2015, things ramped up, and we began purchasing numerous machines yearly. We were doubling our business every year before finally reaching that $12 million mark, adding five to 10 pieces a year, including trucks and other equipment," says Snyder. { Continued on page 10 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

"Today, we have 62 machines in our fleet, 10 utility bed foreman trucks, and two equipment transport trucks with 40-foot trailers. We added a new John Deere 550 dozer this past November and another 35 mini excavator this year; both purchased from RDO Equipment. We also added a new JD 85 excavator that we bought from Coastline Equipment earlier this year. We keep everything well maintained and run them to their full lifecycle. We will also rent from companies like RDO, Coastline, and American Rentals if something is unavailable or if it is a piece of equipment we don't use often." When you look at Advantage Backhoes fleet of backhoes, excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, skip loaders and skid steers, you cannot help but notice the John Deere logo on almost every single unit. "It all goes back to my first experience with that John Deere backhoe in 2003. Beyond feel and performance, it comes down to pricing, service, maintenance and long-term resale value." Snyder says that all those boxes are checked when you buy John Deere and work with distributors like RDO and Coastline. "John Deere offered us the best overall value, especially on the compact side. They also run special incentives like zero percent interest and other perks from time to time and that never hurts. They manufacture great equipment and take good care of our individual needs; for that, they have earned our loyalty," Snyder says.

THE JOBS

Advantage Backhoes had 32 open projects going on this week alone, in 12 separate Southern California counties. "On average, our crews and equipment can be found working in 9 to 12 counties every week. We don't say no to our clients. If they pay for the mobilization, we will go to the moon and figure out a way to be there and get the job done right. If a customer calls at 10 p.m. for a machine the night before, we figure out a way to make that happen. Like I have said, we are big on pride. We are never interested in wringing every last dollar out of a client or being that dreaded change order artist," continues Snyder. "80% of our jobs are for return customers and once they use us, they rarely go anywhere else. We are there to get the next 10 jobs from our loyal customers and handle them, turnkey, if possible. We do it all hassle-free and safety is always at the forefront. We have a strict and tight safety policy with a 0.78 EMR rating, a Zero OSHA DART rate, and over 500,000 man-hours on certified payroll projects without a lost time incident." Advantage Backhoes is currently on the Kaiser Ontario Bio Retention Holding Tank Project, where they are providing numerous services. "This is around a $400,000 job for us where we are doing all of the clear and grub, excavating, setting and rocking the tanks, applying the filter fabric, performing the backfill, and performing the fine grading when everything is installed," says Snyder. { Continued on page 12 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

"Our operators are digging 14 feet down, 110 feet long, and 60 feet wide in very tight access areas for each tank installation." Advantage Backhoes is also on the UCLA Harbor Medical Center project, with up to six operators on their ninth month performing 12kv infrastructure improvements. "This is around a million-dollar job for us, and we have had numerous machines out there from John Deere 245, 135, and 85 excavators, to 544 wheel loaders and even Super 10s on occasion," continues Snyder. Other exciting jobs include working for the U.S. Coastguard, where they are constructing a new administration building on Terminal Island. "We are performing all the trenching for the underground electrical contractor and the grading and overex for the new building pad. We also just started working on a solar field project in Paso Robles on a Cal Fire Air Station. This will include trenching for utilities, clear and grub, grading, and roadway and retention basin work." The company was also awarded the new convention center and hotel in downtown Chula Vista with McCarthy Builders, which starts next month. Advantage Backhoes also recently completed work at the 32nd Street Naval Base Substations 12KV Project. The project included excavating 33,000 linear feet, five-foot-wide and five-foot-deep, from one side of the base to another. This was a turnkey project for Advantage Backhoes, from saw cutting, demo and removal, 12

excavation, shoring, backfill, trench line patch back, traffic control, and export of excess material. They also provided the vacuum trailers to pothole all known utilities. The Naval Base Substation Project was a $7.5 million, 24-month-long project for Advantage Backhoes. Snyder says that they are just slammed right now, so it is hard to think of or see any recession or slowdown, but they are prepared if that should happen. "This is our busiest summer ever, and we are starting to see a lot more solar field construction and green energy money being spent for EV charging stations and other green projects," says Snyder. "This new sector provides us with turnkey opportunities to do everything from clear and grub and grading to roadways, trenching for utilities, and excavating and building concrete pads. Between this and the federal and state prevailing wage jobs, we feel like we can ride out any upcoming downturn." Advantage Backhoes is headquartered in Crestline and provides a diversified portfolio that includes public, private, state, federal and commercial projects. Approximately half their workload is for time and material tickets, where they are called out by the hour. The other half is dedicated to turnkey contract business. Owners Travis and Krystin Snyder are hard-working, dedicated family first people with 7 and 11-year-old daughters, Paige and Audrey. “We feel truly blessed to

K

yle Bosch grew up watching his dad provide for the family by operating a backhoe throughout California. Tom Bosch started in the business working for several different electrical contractors before deciding to go on his own in 1998 and start Bosch Backhoe Service, Inc. “While my dad was traveling from one job to the next with his Case backhoe, my mother, Karen, was busy doing the billing and other administrative aspects of the company,” says Bosch. “My father was non-union and focused primarily on trenching for electrical and plumbing contractors. Seeing how hard he worked to provide a good life for

14

us drove me to follow the same rewarding path.” Sadly, Tom Bosch died of bone cancer in 2009 when his son, Kyle, was just 18 years of age. True to his aspirations, Kyle Bosch (Bosch) joined the IBEW Electrical Union and began his construction career installing underground electrical vaults and transmission lines for contractors primarily working for Edison. Before long, Bosch joined the Local 12 Operating Engineers and spent that time working for multiple well-established heavy equipment rental operations and gas companies. Then, in March 2021, Kyle and his wife, Terra, decided that the time had come to

COMPAC T EQU I P MENT / 2 0 2 2

bring the Bosch Backhoe legacy back to life. Today, Bosch Backhoe Service, Inc. (Bosch Backhoe Service) operates as a WomanOwned Business Enterprise (WBE) and family-operated corporation. “Most of our work is in Orange, San Diego and Los Angeles counties. Although my father’s business was non-union, we felt that our best shot and greatest opportunities would be on union projects,” explains Bosch. While Kyle is busy out in the field taking care of customers, Terra handles the business and administrative side of the business. Bosch Backhoe Service works primarily on all-natural gas line transmission and distribution C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

replacement projects for SoCalGas or subcontractors working for SoCalGas. “It’s nice to have friends who are chasing the same goals and encourage you to keep pushing to become the best you can be. My buddy, Joe Avina at Avina Equipment, was and is that good friend to us, and he was there to help us handle the numerous questions and obstacles that invariably come up when you decide to go out on your own. We thank him for that support,” says Bosch. “There is a definite sense of pride and accomplishment knowing that you are building your dream and future, not someone else’s.”

Bosch also points out how important it is to have an equally supportive equipment supplier. “My father operated a Case backhoe, but I knew that I would go with John Deere if I ever had the opportunity to buy a new backhoe. I learned on a John Deere 410 backhoe and have run just about every backhoe out there throughout my time in the field. I found that for my money, John Deere provides the most production, is the most reliable and has the most power,” says Bosch. “The other deciding factor was the exceptional service and attention we continually receive from Coastline Equipment and our sales representative, Chris Cesa, in Long

Beach. Coastline goes above and beyond to help out small owneroperator companies like ours, and that does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.” Bosch Backhoe Service purchased a new 2021 John Deere 410L from Coastline Equipment last year. The new John Deere 410L is a very popular machine with numerous and significant machine improvements designed to boost productivity. New features include the 4.5L John Deere PowerTech™ EWL Final Tier 4 engine, new pressure-compensated load-sensing (PCLS) hydraulics and a 10 to 15 percent increase in backhoe lift capacity. “The John Deere 410L is an amazing machine

and going with a backhoe loader gives us the best mobility and power for what we do every day,” says Bosch. “We feel like our clients are getting the best and most productive owner-operator service, with the most reliable machine available on the market.” Bosch Backhoe Service recently completed a large project for SDG&E (San Diego Gas & Electric) in San Diego. “We were on the Line 1600 SDG&E job for six months using my 410L backhoe to trench and break rock while assisting on the excavation of a new 16” gas main,” says Bosch. “I am currently on a 3” natural gas distribution main replacement project in Norwalk, excavating for the installation of new pipe and housing services. 16

This is a good niche for us, and it looks like we will remain busy well into the foreseeable future.” Although Bosch Backhoe Service has only been in business for a short time, they have gained some great clients and are building solid relationships. “It is my hope and our goal that the next five years will bring growth opportunities. We want to add three more backhoes and build a good solid team with a few more operators that will keep our customers coming back for more,” concludes Bosch. “I put a lot of stress on myself because my standards and expectations are very high. Gas work requires a lot of additional and specific training certifications. We will continue to become more knowledgeable and

educated to always provide the best quality services to our clients. We go above and beyond and with Bosch Backhoe, they don’t just get an operator. They get a team player. I show up every day with a good attitude and help the crews in any way I can to get the job done fast and safe. It is always a team effort, and I know my father would be proud of what we are building and accomplishing.” Bosch Backhoe Service is a second-generation family-owned and operated heavy equipment rental company. 65 Years and Counting as Chamberlain Backhoe Service Continues Unprecedented Growth in Both Operated Equipment Rental and Turn-Key Contract Construction Services

he last time CalContractor Magazine visited with Tony and Nick Long was in 2020, when Chamberlain Backhoe Service was just starting to grow the contract construction end of their business. Now, in 2022 that business division, along with the operated equipment sector, has continued to grow by leaps and bounds. Nick Long is the director

of operations for Chamberlain Backhoe Service, and he reports that 2022 has been a truly crazy year, but in a good way, as things are abnormally busy in all aspects of the business. "We doubled the size of our staff and operator pool in 2020 and added a second location for repair, maintenance and overflow equipment," says Nick. "2021 was our best year

Tony Long is the owner and CEO of Chamberlain Backhoe Service (CBS) and he points out that the company's contract construction business has also flourished over the past two years. "Our contract construction division offers turnkey services and we have a full-time manager overseeing this side of the business. We were not doing a tremendous amount of contract work in 2020, but once we decided to go all in, it has become a major growth area and an excellent source of revenue for our company," says Tony. "We were winning jobs, but our salesperson was also our project manager. So, he would sell the job and then manage that project to

completion. Most of our growth came when we turned him loose to sell contract projects full-time. Now our representative can focus on building relationships and making connections out in the field to sell the benefits of our multiple threeperson crews." CBS started 2022 with 10 inhouse operators, which has now grown to 17, while also increasing their pool of select owneroperators. "We were supplying operators and equipment to around 18 jobs daily, and now that number has increased to more like 30 each day. The workload has also increased, and there are many moving pieces and logistical issues involved with this sort of growth," says Nick. "We also hired a full-

time transport crew where in the past we had our operators with their own truck and flatbed trailer. So now we are free to hire great operators without them having to secure permits or a truck and trailer to transport their own equipment. This has also contributed to our evolution and growth." CBS is one of Southern California's largest non-union operated equipment rental companies. However, they are still small fish within a vast body of water in the contract construction business. Even so, CBS's contract division is growing by the day and according to Tony Long, they are just weeks away from securing their A contractor license. "There are not very many companies like

ours in the marketplace right now. When things would get tight, we would fall back on the contract end of our business, where now that division is a major part of our annual growth," says Tony. "A couple of our larger electrical contractors are eagerly waiting for us to secure our A contractor's license next month. This will further expand our capabilities and offerings and open us up to more growth and expansion. This will obviously require more employees, laborers, and operators and is a transition that we are carefully planning. Our goal is to nurture all aspects of our overall business model to enable us to continue to grow through any recession or economic slowdown." CBS is currently on a contract job at the Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, where they are excavating a few thousand feet of trench. "We are working for the general contractor on the West Coving hospital project. Our experienced crew is excavating right through an active parking lot with constant vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Our job is to dig electrical trench to bring power to the main transformer that will serve a new hospital building and parking structure. This involves a lot of cutting and demo, along with the trenching. We put the trench plates in place after each workday and then remove them the next

day for more of the same. We will be out there for around three and a half months, and this is the sort of work we do every day so that contractors can focus on more pressing construction issues." CBS also recently completed a two-month contract job for the plumbing contractor in San Juan Capistrano to construct a new lumber building and yard. In addition, another one of their contract crews is busy on an 8-month-long trenching project at Plum Canyon Apartments in Santa Clarita. "We are working in Santa Clarita for an electrical contractor who has hired our crew to dig and set vaults and excavate, backfill and compact thousands of feet of trench," says Tony. "Most of these contract projects call for the amazingly productive use of our mini excavator/skid steer combo." When CBS started in 1957, it was all about the tractor loader backhoe, which drove the operated equipment rental business for decades. "The backhoe was our go-to machine, and sort of the Swiss Army Knife implement back in the day. It remained that way until the big recession began in 2007, and that is when we purchased our first mini excavator from Coastline Equipment. Things were not good at this time, and we used that John Deere mini excavator all day for one operator

and then all night for the next operator. We did this for around three months in a row, and that machine helped us through some pretty tough times," says Tony. Surprisingly, it wasn't until 2017 that we purchased our next miniexcavator and then a skid steer loader. The demand for the mini excavator and skid steer became so frequent that we decided to buy another John Deere mini-ex/ skid steer combo, and we continue adding more machines to meet that demand. Having said this, the backhoe remains in high demand and has its specific advantages over the mini and skid steer combo in certain situations." Both Tony and Nick point out that they work hard to match the job with the appropriate skill and experience of the individual operator. "We want repeat customers, and that means giving the customer what they want and whom they want on a jobsite," continues Tony. "In a perfect world, we would like to see a regular customer have three favorite operators so that if one is busy, another comparable operator will perform up to the same standard." Nick Long says they are always on the hunt for great operators looking to work in a family-type atmosphere with excellent pay and benefits. "Two of our last seven new operator hires were previous C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

owner-operators for many years. We were able to hire them on and even purchase their equipment for their continued use out in the field," continues Nick. "This was a win/win for everyone, and we are so happy to have all-stars like this working here at CBS." 2022 has also been a year of numerous equipment acquisitions for CBS. "Just this year, we purchased four new backhoes, a skid steer and a compact excavator. Our entire fleet is John Deere, with a few specialty equipment exceptions. Many of our purchases come from the rental fleet of our 'go-to' equipment distributor, Coastline Equipment. We purchased two new John Deere 310L backhoes from Coastline this year and a 310SL HL backhoe. We also purchased a 318 skid steer and a John Deere 17G mini excavator from an individual owner," says Nick. "We work with Sean James

at Coastline, and he always has our best interest at heart. We can't say enough good things about our equipment partners at Coastline Equipment." Chamberlain Backhoe Service was founded in 1957 and has served thousands of contractors throughout Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. Owner, Tony Long, has three sons, Nick, Tyler and Jordan, who all play a vital role in the company. Tyler serves as the fleet manager and is also spearheading the Long and Sons Equipment Services end of the business that offers services for everyday maintenance and service solutions to outside contractors. Jordan is an equipment operator making his mark on the company with outstanding skills that regular customers often request. Tony's wife, Wendy Long, serves as the company president and oversees

much of the inside administration operations. Chamberlain Backhoe Service has served thousands of contractors throughout Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties since 1957. CBS specializes in the excavation and/or compaction for concrete, electrical, environmental, landscape, masonry and plumbing contractors. As a non-union contractor, CBS's work serves both the public and private sectors. Located in Placentia, CBS has a variety of equipment available, including backhoes, mini excavators, skid steers, 10-wheel and bobtail dump trucks, as well as a wide range of buckets and attachments such as augers, breakers, forks and wheel compactors. BX, Inc. (DBX) started as an electrical contracting company in 1964 when founder, Jim R. Perry, recognized the importance and future growth opportunity in the roadway electrical business. The company soon began to specialize in designing and installing traffic signals, street lighting, and runway lighting. By 1994, DBX started recognizing the importance of moving into fiber optics, wireless technology and traffic management centers. They began following the integration of these rapidly expanding technologies as

they robustly transitioned into the cutting-edge world of intelligent transportation systems. Now, with nearly 60 years of experience, DBX has the knowledge, capability, and dedicated team members to install, maintain, renovate and repair all intelligent transportation systems (ITS) configurations. Tim Seaman is an electrician/ project manager for DBX and has worked for the company for nearly seven years. “Building and maintaining traffic signals has been the bread and butter of our business for nearly six

decades. At DBX, we can design and build complete traffic control systems. We can also integrate an entire IT infrastructure from design to completion for any size project,” says Seaman. “Whether you are Caltrans, a city, municipality, or other agency, our talented crews are ready to install everything from street lighting, freeway management systems, and any other electrical roadway infrastructure, including fiber optics. Our ITS system components include everything from fiber optic video and data systems to infrared and sonic C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

detection systems to loop sensors and solar power systems. We know this business from A to Z and welcome any and all challenges.” DBX is currently on a large project in Los Angeles located around the I-10 freeway from Highway 1 in Santa Monica, along the 405 and 110 freeways, and extending to the I-5 freeway. DBX is installing ramp meters on this project, which are traffic signals CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

on freeway on-ramps that control the frequency of vehicles entering the traffic flow. “Along with modifying ramp meters, we are also installing CCTV, DMS signs and structures, and fiber optics over around 12 miles of roadway,” says Seaman. “These installations require a lot of pull boxes and conduit, which we are digging at depths of 3 to 5 feet depending on the application.”

DBX is utilizing eight crew members on the 12-mile freeway project, and they are fortunate to have their brand new Yanmar Vio35-6A mini excavator onsite for the excavating duties. “We recently took delivery of our new Yanmar mini excavator from Volvo Construction Equipment & Services and are using it for the first time on this I-10 freeway project. Our operator is already reporting to us on how powerful this Yanmar is, and he loves the quick coupler. I can tell you that the Yanmar has already sped up production, enabling our crew to move along quickly on this project,” continues Seaman.

Above & Right: Volvo Construction Equipment & Services offers Yanmar Mini Excavator from 10.3 hp and 2,348 lbs. to 72 hp and 21,550 lbs. The Yanmar Zero Tail Swing Mini Excavators come with SmartAssist technology, legndary power and durability and are available with ROPS or enclosed cabs and many other options.

“Before purchasing the Yanmar, we would rent a machine with or without an operator. The time came when it just made more sense to own a mini excavator. We had worked with Aaron Anderson from Volvo Construction Equipment & Services in the past, and he has always treated us right. We look forward to adding more Yanmar mini excavators in the future.” DBX has several crews and is also currently working on a job in Fallbrook for the County of San Diego. They work at two separate intersections on this project, installing traffic signal foundations, conduit, pull boxes and wire poles. Yanmar compact excavators offer industry-leading technology and incredible efficiency to help 24

the contractor work harder and smarter. These mini excavators come with Tier 4 certified world renowned Yanmar engines, true tail-swing maneuverability, and a 4-year/4,000-hour warranty. COMPACT AND MINI EXCAVATORS CONTINUE TO BE IN DEMAND, ROLLING OFF DISTRIBUTORS LOTS AS SOON AS THEY ARRIVE By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor

T

he global mini excavator market was valued at $6.6 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach $10.2 billion by 2030. The demand, however, is being hampered by supply chain issues that are affecting delivery dates. Even with these troubling challenges, manufacturers have shown little pause in releasing new models with modern features and technologies that continue to captivate the marketplace. The compact excavator was somewhat of a “necessity is the mother of invention” phenomena. Japan was reportedly facing an economic boom with mass growth in their urban areas back in the 1960s. New housing construction in already heavily built-up areas prevented larger excavators from working onsite, leaving laborers with only the old pickax and shovel option. Yanmar was the initial manufacturer to step up and address the challenge by producing the first mini excavator in 1968. The wheeled self-propelled Yanmar YNB300 was followed by the YNB600C, with a swing boom and ability to dig up against walls.

28

Takeuchi followed with their mini excavator in 1971 with a long list of other manufacturers jumping into the mix as technology and available options continued to expand and improve. Interestingly, compact excavators were not introduced to America until the early 1980s, with around 20 manufacturers now competing for the mini excavator business here in the U.S. in 2022. Mini or compact excavators are generally defined as an excavator weighing less than 20,000 pounds. They typically have a digging capacity to depths from 5 feet to 20 feet, and diesel engines ranging from 13 to 70+ hp. This smaller size allows these compact machines to work within smaller footprints and in more sensitive terrain. There are mini excavators small enough to fit through a residential doorway and still large enough to handle large production trenching jobs with results you might expect from larger, conventional excavators. Contractors rent and purchase mini excavators for a variety of applications including trenching, digging footings, and excavating and placing trees and other landscape material. It has also

COMPAC T EQU I P MENT / 2 0 2 2

become more common to see compact excavators and skid steer loaders working side by side on jobsites where you may have once more commonly seen backhoe loaders. Over the last few years, manufacturers have stepped up efforts in the development of electric and other alternative fuel mini excavators along with new and exciting autonomous digging technology. There are now several manufacturers offering hybrid or all electric compact excavators to include Volvo, Cat, John Deere, Case CE, Komatsu, Kobelco and Doosan, among other brands. Compact excavators are easier to transport from site to site and in many cases can perform the same amount of production as their larger more cumbersome counterparts. These versatile machines work perfectly in tight spaces, are more cost effective and offer simple operation and exceptional performance. Take a look at some of the offerings our advertisers have for you and check out their websites for more information. Cc C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M
