Sierra Landscape Development, Inc.-

Two Generations of Quality Landscape Construction Written by: Brian Hoover

(Above) Andrew Brown, Compact Equipment Specialist for Coastline Equipment and Kevin Watchler, Vice President of Sierra Landscape Development, Inc.

Richard Watchler started Sierra Landscape as a one-man operation back in 1983 in order to provide quality residential and commercial landscape and maintenance services 6

to the San Gabriel Valley. He had been working for one of the worlds largest engineering companies as a pipeline engineer doing designs for refineries and pipeline projects. The hours were

2012 Compact Equipment Issue CALCONTRACTOR

long and with a new baby on the way, Richard wanted to spend more time closer to home. He made the difficult yet honorable decision of leaving his high profile job and instead he decided to return to college, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California Polytechnic University at Pomona in 1987. After graduation, Richard started a small landscape company out of his home in Arcadia, doing primarily gardening projects. He soon took on larger residential planting projects, along with irrigation installations and repairs. Still needing to add more revenue, Richard began calling on local architects to see if they were in need of his services. This brought about the meeting of another Richard, namely Richard L. Barns, who just happened to be at the beginning stages of his Showcase Homes development project. It was the late 80’s and this new contact represented an upward growth curve for Sierra Landscape Development. www.calcontractor.com

(Above) John Deere 35D Compact Excavator trenching on a jobsite in Alhambra. Sierra Landscape Development recently entered into an RPO with Coastline Equipment on this John Deere compact unit. Another notable growth spurt came just four or five years ago, when Sierra Landscape decided to concentrate more on commercial and public works type projects. Richard’s son, Kevin Watchler was a big part of this transition and he explains, “I was born the year my father started this company and I grew up in the business, helping out anyway I could after school and during the summer break. I moved to Atlanta back in 2002 to work for a large landscape supply business that specialized in mulch and soil production. When I returned home in 2008, I spent a full year just learning the business and working to find more efficient ways to bid and work. Business had slowed down dramatically and we could no longer rely on referrals or word of mouth to keep us busy. I noticed that we were bidding on a number of residential projects and our quotes were close to double that of the winning bidder, even without much of any profit built into the bid. I knew it was time to expand our efforts in a different direction. I started looking at websites and public notices to see what was out to bid and then I would order the plans and work up a bid. For the first couple of months I was not turning in the bids. Instead, I would go through www.calcontractor.com

the entire process and then compare my work against the bid results. This was time well spent, because today I am doing most all of the estimating and about 80 percent of the field management work. We are still a relatively small company and I can either be found out in the field in the trenches, on a piece of equipment or in the office catching up on the accounting. These days you have to do it all if you want to keep your head above water. Today we perform public works jobs and commercial landscape construction almost exclusively. We still maintain a good list of residential accounts, however with the tight budgets most homeowners have today, many can unfortunately no longer afford our services.” Sierra Landscape Development, Inc. now performs a variety of public works and commercial projects, from half-day service calls to working for some of Southern California’s largest general engineering contractors on multi-million dollar projects. They are currently working on a relatively small playground rehabilitation project at Park Elementary in Alhambra, California, as well as planting 36” and 48” tree boxes and irrigation and turf work at Fremont Elementary School also in

Alhambra. Both of these jobs are under $40,000, however Sierra is also on another job for Caltrans that should come in at over $300,000 by jobs end. Kevin Watchler, Vice President of Sierra Landscape & Development explains, “Although this is not the biggest job dollar-wise that we have ever worked on, it does represent the single largest project in terms of size. This $200 million job is officially called the Schuyler Heim Bridge Replacement being done by Caltrans and MCM Construction out of Sacramento for the City of Long Beach. Our portion of the contract calls on us to install new landscaping and irrigation with backflow, at the ends of the bridges where it meets the roadway. We are doing quite a bit of trenching, as well as installing several large boulders throughout the new landscape. To accomplish this heavy work efficiently, we use our Toro track-trencher, along with our John Deere CT322 compact track loader that we recently purchased from Coastline Equipment. The John Deere track loader makes all the difference in the world on the hillsides and slopes on this and other

projects. The stability of this machine is just amazing and it has been a very welcome addition to our company.” Sierra Landscape also works for other large contractors like Flatiron West and Granite Construction. One such job is currently in progress up near Palmdale for Granite Construction. The job is fairly large at around $500,000, but it is also interesting in the fact that Sierra is relocating a number of Joshua trees and will soon be installing thousands of one-gallon native plants. They will also be installing wire screening and bug resistance foliage to protect the new growth from sunlight and other elements. In addition they are required to install a temporary irrigation system to keep the plants irrigated for the next year, while other construction is finished. Sierra Landscape will also soon be working for Flatiron West in San Diego, who is busy working on the Sorrento to Miramar Double Track Project. Kevin Watchler continues, “We will be doing all of the native revegetation on this project, primarily in the areas that were disturbed during construction. In addition, we will be 8

running miles of sprinkler line and main line along the train tracks. This job will be a challenge for us due to the environmental concerns like ferry shrimp and other plant and animal species in this area. However at just under $500,000 it is a good high profile job for us and we are excited to get started soon.” In order to remain productive and competitive, Sierra Landscape Development, Inc. continues to invest in construction equipment. Kevin explains, “I have always been fond of John Deere and the company that I worked for in Atlanta had a large fleet of Deere equipment. I was very impressed with the power and performance the John Deere machines provided day in and day out and I knew that when the time came for our company to purchase new equipment, it would be John Deere. In years past, we had made the decision to rent equipment. It became clear overtime that renting substandard equipment was costing us much more in the long run. This is when we decided to purchase our John Deere CT322 compact track loader from

2012 Compact Equipment Issue CALCONTRACTOR

Coastline Equipment in Long Beach. We demoed all of the other brands and it was clear to us that the John Deere was superior. Because this purchase worked out so well, we recently decided to enter into an RPO with Coastline on a new John Deere 35D compact excavator. We have rented this unit in the past from Coastline and we know the kind of productivity we get, especially when working in tandem with our track loader. Both machines have been working side by side for the past couple of weeks moving and planting palm trees and the results have been amazing. We hit it off right away with Coastline Equipment and their personable employees and excellent service keeps us coming back for all of our parts and John Deere equipment needs.” Sierra Landscape Development, Inc. provides their services to several Southern California Counties including: Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. They specialize in quality landscape design and construction with services that include but are not limited to: installation, maintenance, erosion control, hydro-seeding, drainage and sump pump systems, lighting, copper mainline upgrades, specimen trees and shrubs, drought tolerant plants, specialized flower gardens, tree transplanting, dry stream beds and boulder placement. In addition, the company can subcontract any other services. For more information please call 626-447-5260 or visit online at www.sierralandscapedev.com. Cc www.calcontractor.com

Payco Specialties Inc.

Written by: Brian Hoover

Southern California’s Leader In Highway Re-Alignment, Striping and Other Safety Traffic Diversion Services

(Above) Jeff Llewellyn, Vice President of Payco Specialties, Inc. Payco Specialties provides striping, signage, marking, removals and new pavement marker and delineator installation on highways, airports, streets and parking lots.

David Llewellyn started out in the sandblasting business back in the mid-60’s, before adding a preformed concrete manufacturing business to the mix a few years later. He specialized in concrete parking bumpers and fire rings like you see down at the public beach. David also partnered with another gentleman who specialized in striping roads and parking lots. In 1973, David along with his wife Rebecca decided to bring all of their businesses together and form one company by the name of Payco Specialties, Inc. Striping became their core business and they used their sand blasters to remove striping. In 1977, they decided to get out of the pre-formed concrete

www.calcontractor.com

business and by 1980 they were concentrating 100% of their efforts toward highway striping and temporary stage construction. Today, Payco Specialties provides striping, signage, marking, removals and new pavement marker and delineator installation on highways, airports, streets and parking lots. They are truly the industry experts in Southern California when it comes to challenging temporary traffic stages requiring field experience and knowledge of traffic safety. Rebecca Llewellyn is the President of Payco Specialties, which is a woman owned business and an Underutilized Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (UDBE) subcontractor.

Her son Jeff Llewellyn is the Company’s Vice President and first started for his mother’s company after graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1995. Jeff grew up in the family business, however after receiving his degree in Geology, he was set to become a volcanologist. Unfortunately the USGS was currently involved in a budget freeze and so Jeff returned home to the family business and never looked back from there. His mother runs the daily affairs of the business and his father is retired, but as Jeff says tongue in cheek, “he still comes in to work most everyday for just enough time to tell everyone how much hard work it was in the old days and how easy we have it now with this state-of-the-art equipment”. Jeff continues, “We specialize in Caltrans temporary traffic stages. An example of this is when Caltrans is lets say retrofitting a bridge and needs to divert all of the traffic away from the general construction area. This is where we come in and remove all of the existing striping and lines. Next we pop off the reflective markers and non-reflective bumps and rumble strips. After this, we layout and stripe-in a new alignment, that will divert traffic away from the bridge construction, false work or excavation. When the bridge retrofit is completed; we then go back in and remove the temporary area and put everything back to a permanent alignment. This, of course requires the installation of new reflectors, rumble strips and so on.”

2012 Compact Equipment Issue CALCONTRACTOR

11

Payco Specialties designed a unique system for removing reflectors and bumps off of the roadway surface utilizing an 1,800 lb. steel weight in the bucket and a cutting edge welded to the buckets edge.

Jeff goes on to explain that a typical Caltrans San Diego County District 11 freeway job for instance will involve around 3 to 5 miles of freeway in both directions. “We will do a 2 ½ to 3 mile push and our biggest shift to date was at around 60-feet, which was on Interstate 15 in San Diego County. We took the existing freeway and shifted it 60-feet right and down about 2 ½ miles and then shifted it 60feet back to the original freeway surface. This represented the largest night pull that we have ever completed and so far I have not heard of any other company accomplishing such a feat in such a short amount of time. Once you get started on a push like this one, there is just no stopping after you have initiated the move. This is just one of the reasons why we need to purchase and maintain reliable equipment for use on these

12

jobsites. We currently own and operate a Case, Caterpillar and a Volvo skid steer loader, which we use for removing reflectors, bumps and other items on a roadway surface. We needed to add another machine to our fleet and so we recently purchased a brand new Volvo (MC 115 C) skid steer from Volvo Construction Equipment & Services. We have built a great relationship with our sales representative, Scott Nadell over the years and have purchased several Doosan (IR) air compressors from him in the past. A few months back, Scott came in to let us know that Volvo was offering incredible pricing on new skid steers, as well as great terms and rates. What really sold me on the Volvo however was the fact that it had a fully enclosed cab, air conditioning, heater, a heated seat and a convenient side exit door, all for 20 grand less than any comparable high end competitor. In addition when we tested it out on the jobsite, it felt like it put out much more power and overall better performance when comparing it apples to apples with the other units. We use our new Volvo primarily

2012 Compact Equipment Issue CALCONTRACTOR

to remove reflectors and even designed a unique solution where we put a 1,800 lb. steel weight in the bucket and welded a cutting edge onto the bucket edge. This allows our operators to run the Volvo at its top speed, while clipping off reflectors and throwing them directly into the bucket. We will continue to keep three skid steers in our fleet, one for each crew and then one to be used as a backup. The Volvo is definitely our number one machine and I have to say that if I had to buy another skid steer today, it would be a Volvo. As a matter of fact that purchase may arrive soon as our Tier 1 Cat and older Case machine reach the end of their emission allowable life.” Payco Specialties has evolved since its 1970’s beginning. They have enjoyed very good years and barely hung on like other companies back in 2008. One thing is certain to carry them on in the future and that is by doing their specialty construction service better than anyone else in the business. Abateco, Inc. Utilizes John Deere

Compact Excavators & Skid Steer Loaders From Coastline Equipment For Commercial Pool Digs & Hazardous Material Abatement Written by: Brian Hoover In today’s rough and tumble economy, it is well known that diversity is often times the key to survival and success. This usually results in the addition of other profit centers that are in most cases a natural extension of what a company is already involved in. This however is not always the case and Abateco, Inc. out of Bakersfield, California is a perfect example of how a company can specialize in a diametrically different work segment and still manage to make it all work together for the better good of the company. Something like this usually comes about by happenstance and that is what basically happened in this case. Florencio Marquez, Manager of Abateco, Inc. explains, “We are an unconventional company in many ways, including the fact that we are a WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise). Our owner and President, Mary Blanton runs all divisions of our company and we are proud of her successful leadership over the years in this predominantly male owned and operated business. Since

(Above L to R) Florencio Marquez, Manager of Abateco, Inc. and Carl Caldwell, Compact Equipment Sales, Coastline Equipment. 1988, Abateco has performed asbestos abatement, industrial re-insulation and oilfield work. Around 10 years ago, I was having a casual conversation with a friend, who had been working for a pool installation

company. He was not particularly happy at his current job, but he just couldn’t say enough about what a great business it was and that we should consider starting an excavation division.

(Left) Abateco, Inc. using their John Deere 50D Compact Excavator to dig a pool with the help of their JD 323D Compact Track Loader pictured above. Management gave the idea some thought, but it wasn’t until around two years later that they finally decided to give it a try. It was not long before our managament began having second thoughts and the first year ended with only 43 pool digs under our belt. But the following year the referral business began to come our way ending the year at 230 pools. The annual numbers continued to grow with 320 the next year and then 400 and

all the way up to over 600 pool excavations a year. This combined with other basic excavation and grading jobs made for a nice new profit center.” Although there were times in the abatement, remediation and oilfield business where the use of construction equipment was required; this new excavation division would definitely require at least a skid steer loader and compact excavator on a fulltime basis. Florencio explains, “Abateco started out with a Bobcat skid steer and a Kubota excavator. At around the 3-year mark our company began having issues with the hydraulic hoses

This is when management started talking to our local John Deere dealer, Coastline Equipment in Bakersfield and eventually began trading in what we had for two new John Deere rubber tired skid steer loaders and two new compact excavators. With this acquisition came a surge of new business, which required the addition of another crew. This then necessitated the purchase of another set of JD compact excavators and skid steer loaders. Today Abateco owns and operates (3) John Deere CT 322 compact track loaders and (3) John Deere 50D compact excavators with long booms. In addition, Abateco recently signed a new order for (2) new John Deere 323D compact track loaders and (2) new JD 50D compact excavators and will trade-in two 2007 year model

machines. As Abateco continues to grow, more John Deere units will be added to support the new business.” Abateco, Inc. purchased their first John Deere compact excavator and skid steer back in 2004. Although they started out with rubber tired skid steers, they quickly switched to compact track loaders when they saw first hand what a difference they could make. Florencio continues, “The skid steer works naturally and seamlessly with the compact excavator. When John Deere came out with the compact track skid steer, Coastline asked us to give one a try on a jobsite. Giving it a try and after seeing what they can do, we will never go back to the traditional rubber tired machine. In our particular business, the tracks make all the difference in the world. Their grip in the mud and on

hillsides allows us to get much more work done in less time. They don’t bounce around and our operators appreciate the reduced wear and tear on their bodies. Using the track skid steer and compact excavator in tandem is really a day and night situation and we are now able to do some nice pool jobs from start to finish in only around 2-½ hours time, and some really good sized pools in one day. The John Deere compact excavator never stops digging and the track loader never stops loading. Coastline has taken great care of us over the years and whenever a machine is in need of parts or repair, they are right there with a loner machine if that is what we require. Abateco looks at Coastline and their great people as a valuable extension of our company and Abateco looks forward to working with them for many more years.” Abateco, Inc. continues to do a lot of oilfield work and use their John Deere machines to excavate waterlines that are wrapped with asbestos, as well as lead abatement work. Every Abateco operator is certified to work with this and many other hazardous materials. They even recently used their John Deere compact excavators and compact track loaders to demo an entire house in just 20 minutes. Today the two divisions of the company are split almost equally as far as annual revenue goes. In addition to the above stated disciplines, Abateco also offers a variety of excavation services to contractors, in addition to home and basement excavations. They serve all of Kern County, Tulare County, Kings County, up into Fresno County and even in the San Luis Obispo area. For more information on Abateco, Inc. please call (661) 391-9800. Cc

Sandra Maness is the President of Total Equipment Rental, which has been a WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise) Certified contractor’s rental yard since 2009. Kevin Maness is the Vice President at Total Equipment Rental and oversees all of the equipment purchases. Because this is CalContractor’s Compact Equipment Issue, we thought that it would be prudent to take advantage of Total Equipment Rental’s many years in the rental business and see what his thoughts are on utilizing compact equipment in the rental industry specifically. Here are just a few

2012 Compact Equipment Issue CALCONTRACTOR

comments that Kevin Maness shared with us during our interview: CalContractor: “Just how popular are compact machines in today’s heavy construction environment?” Total Equipment Rental: “Compact machines are very popular because they are so versatile. On just about every construction job you come across, from roadwork to residential, you will find some type of compact equipment. Take for instance our Volvo compact excavators that we have sent out to every type of company, from landscape contractors to large general contractors. They need these machines for working on trenching for water lines to reaching and replacing electrical and gas lines. In many cases the areas they work in are hard to get to and the available footprint has to be very minimal and compact equipment fits

that mold. Track machines are another example of a very popular compact machine. Some of the slopey areas where a standard skid steer cannot go and a track dozer is out of the question, well this is where a track skid steer unit represents the perfect solution. These track skid loaders also have the ability to accept all skid steer attachments, such as trenchers and a slue of different buckets. Our compact equipment line runs deep, from skid steers (Volvo & Bobcat) that are both track and wheeled to compact excavators (Volvo & John Deere) that range from 5,000 lb. to 19,000 lb. capacities. We also have a large lineup of backhoes and skip loaders (Volvo & John Deere), as well as compact wheel loaders (Volvo). Our compact equipment offerings also support every kind of attachment imaginable, including thumbs on compact excavators, grapple buckets and trenchers for skid steer and all sizes of hydraulic breakers for both. Our 1 to 3 and 3 to 5 ton

asphalt and soil compactors are also a big part of our compact fleet and they are always in demand. CC: “What do your contractor customers look for most when renting compact equipment? TER: “Most of the time they are looking for a powerful machine that can get into tight quarters and not damage existing ground area or infrastructure. They also prefer rubber tracks or may want to use a backhoe over a steel tracked excavator when working on asphalt or other surfaces where they want to avoid damage. Making sure that we stock all types of attachments and have them available at all times, which is of course important to our customers. Again, the size and power of these small machines and the variety of attachments that can be used is why you will find a compact machine on just about any jobsite.” CC: “What type of contractors do you cater to and how does compact equipment play into their rental requirements?” TER: “The majority of our business is made up of general engineering construction companies, including building, infrastructure, underground, grading & excavating and demolition contractors. The next major group of users would most likely be commercial and industrial users, followed by our line of green related products like our solar powered light tower line. We

This is why we deal with manufacturers like Volvo Construction Equipment, Doosan Portable Power and Ingersol-Rand legacy brands. These brands meet and exceed not just our expectations, but more importantly the expectations of our customers and that is what keeps us in business.” CC: “What about your local equipment distributors? Do you need to rely much on their service and support?” TER: “VCES (Volvo Construction Equipment & Services) is our local equipment distributor for Volvo construction equipment, as well as Doosan light towers, air compressors, rollers, compaction equipment and portable power equipment. For more than 20 years now we have been dealing with these folks and we are more than satisfied with the quality of both their sales and service offerings. What stands out more than anything is the premier service and support we have received for years from VCES representatives like Chris Montgomery and Edward Galindo. Their efforts are what have made the difference in why we are so loyal to their brands. I will even go on to say that their shared

understanding of customer services and product support is a big reason why we have been so successful.” CC: “What does the future hold for Total Equipment Rental in say the next five years or so? TER: “Growth…but not the kind that comes and goes, just the same kind of growth we have had for the last 38 years, which by the way can be credited to our tremendous staff. We want to continue to grow steady, with passion andwith customer service always being our focus. Our customers satisfaction is how we rate our success.” In addition to the brands already mentioned, Total Equipment Rental also offers the following quality brand names: Bobcat, Bomag, Case, Caterpillar Industrial Lift Trucks, Doosan (IR), John Deere, Genie, JLG, Skyjack, Snorkel and Broderson carry deck cranes. Located in Riverside County, Norco is most known as a horse community where you can still enjoy city living in a rural atmosphere. You won’t find a lot of sidewalks in Norco, but you will see a number of horse trails. Riders can ride into town and hitch their horse to rails and corrals placed close to businesses. It is a very unique city and because the city caters to both city and rural at the same time, it is an ideal location for a rental equipment store. Norco Equipment Rentals has been supplying rental equipment and supplies to the local area and a large part of the Inland Empire for more than 25 years. Bill Hoham purchased Norco Equipment Rentals back in 2005, however he has been involved in the rental business for some 30 years. His career first started out in 1979, when he worked as a store manager for a large rental company out of Anaheim, that also had 12 other locations throughout Southern California. After this, Bill went to work for his brother, John Hoham, who at the time owned Foothill Rentals with multiple locations. Bill managed one of the stores, until his brother sold the business in favor of opening a brand new venture in Las Vegas by the name of Rebel Rents. Bill became the General Manager in Las Vegas and happily remained in this position for the

next seven years. Later, Bill would move back to California and manage the Rebel Rents San Diego branch. Eventually, Bill ended up at RentSmart in Hemet, where he served as their manager for six years, before deciding to purchase Norco Equipment Rentals. Today Norco Equipment Rentals serves contractors and homeowners throughout the Inland Empire area. Around 60% of the business is still with homeowners, while the remaining 40% is with underground, asphalt, concrete and other general contractors in their service area. Bill Hoham talks about his career to date in the rental equipment business, “I come from a rental industry family and this is pretty much what I have done since I was able to work. Working for other companies over the years definitely prepared me for owning my own rental store. You might say that I had the luxury to learn from others mistakes or misfortunes. I also learned much from their success as well. Today presents a tremendous challenge to just about any small business. The rental industry has changed in such a way that just simply surviving is at times the most important thing to focus on. The “Home Depot” mentality in this business has made it more difficult for the smaller rental company owners like myself. However the service they receive from our rental company is what has and will keep us in business in the future. We build business and even personal relationships with our customers and over time we get to know their needs, allowing us to anticipate

We also stock and sell materials like gravel and decomposed granite and maintain a pretty steady U-Cart concrete ready-mix business. All in all every aspect of our business keeps us in the black, but it is our customers that truly deserve all of the credit for our success over the years.” Part of being successful in the rental business is stocking the name brands, sizes and models that customers want most. Norco Equipment Rentals does this with the top lines in air compressors, air hammers, backhoes, skid steer loaders, skip loaders, compaction equipment, concrete tools and equipment, concrete mixers, excavators, generators, industrial generators, hand tools and jack hammers,

lifts, scaffolds, ladders, lawn equipment, plumbing equipment, pumps, tile cutting equipment, tow dollies, trailers, hydraulic dump trailers, trenchers, water trailers, horse trailers, welders and the list goes on and on. This represents quite an investment for a small business and owner, Bill Hoham must choose wisely so that the equipment he rents will last and perform efficiently for an extended period of time. Bill continues, “When it comes down to purchasing new equipment for our fleet, I consider every aspect of owning and renting the machine over time. Durability and performance are what we look for most in this business, and perhaps then price comes next. Renting compact equipment by both homeowners and contractors has been a very popular option over the past 10 to 15 years. These machines are big enough to get just about any residential or commercial job done and also small enough to fit into those tight confined work areas you find at a home or jobsite. I remember when the compacts first came out years ago and I have to admit that I sort of laughed it off at first. Then I witnessed the kind of production that a compact excavator and skid steer can achieve working together. I became a believer and so did my customers. When the time came to add a new skid steer loader to our fleet, I checked out all of the major brands available. Our LiuGong dealer is Westrax Machinery and their sales representative, Dennis McShane

had been calling on us and knew that we were in the market for a new machine. He dropped off a brand new LiuGong (CLG375AIII) skid steer for us to try out for almost a full month. I don’t like to take advantage of anyone and I was a little apprehensive about taking him up on the trial basis. However, I conceded and I am very glad that I did. This LiuGong skid steer loader is one of the most sturdy and dependable skid steers I have ever been in and operated. It comes standard with air conditioning, heater and stereo, all at the same price of the smaller sized competitive brands. Our customers have commented on its power and how easy the controls are to operate. I just feel that we got more for our money with this LiuGong skid steer and if this new machine continues to impress our customers, we will add more in the future. One of my concerns with working with a new brand and Westrax Machinery was just what kind of service would we receive down the road after the sale. We had a chance to test just that recently and Westrax was just all over it, taking care of all of our needs quickly and in a very professional manner. I look forward to continuing to do business with Westrax Machinery and LiuGong Construction Machinery in the future.” For more information on Norco Equipment Rentals and their rental equipment offerings please visit their website at www.norcoequipmentrentals. com or call Bill Hoham at 951-371-1231. New John Deere K-Series Backhoe/Tractor Loaders Provide Contractors Versatility and Power Needed on the Jobsite John Deere recently introduced its K-Series Backhoe Loaders, eight productive and efficient models (310K EP, 310K, 310SK, 310SK TC, 315SK, 410K, 410K TC, 710K) that build on the success of the popular J-Series. Two economical tractor loader models (210K EP, 210K) round out the K-Series and provide additional jobsite versatility. The new K-Series models deliver productivity, uptime and lower daily operating costs that operators expect from John Deere equipment. The new K-Series meets today’s emission regulations. Powered by a certified IT4/ Stage III B John Deere PowerTech™ engine, the K-Series comes equipped with a five-speed transmission that allows top speeds of 25 mph when roading. An optional AutoShift transmission enables smooth shifting and improves

operator comfort by reducing the number of times the Transmission Control Lever (TCL) needs to be actuated during operation. A single loader lever with integrated electro-hydraulic (EH) auxiliary loader control eliminates the need for a second lever when using a multi-purpose bucket. In addition, a complete redesign of the cab ventilation now circulates cab air from front-to-back, directing airflow where operators need it the most. The 210K EP and 310K EP are two new models designed specifically for rental and large contractor customers that need reliable, easy to use power. The EP models provide a 70 hp engine with IT4 power without needing any aftertreatment technology. This eliminates the need for additional operator training or extra monitoring of machines that have numerous

operators focused primarily on quickly getting on and off a machine to get a job done. In addition to the backhoe loaders, the 210K EP and 210K tractor loaders deliver bestin-class seat rotation, dual-tilt rear cylinders and tilt steering and are ideal for paving and grading applications. With strong visibility, ride control, limited slip front axles and a single lever for controlling a loader with auxiliary hydraulics, this tractor is also ideal for loading. Cc

Cat® D Series Mini Excavators Add More Performance and Operator Convenience to Predecessors’ Quality and Reliability The new Cat® D Series Mini Hydraulic Excavators—models 303.5D CR, 304D CR, 305D CR and 305.5D CR—are powerful, versatile, compact-radius machines that work comfortably in confined spaces and build on the quality design and reliability of their C Series predecessors—303C CR, 303.5C CR, 304C CR and 305C CR. With model designations that closely reflect their operating weights (3.5 to 5.5 metric tons), the new machines feature enhanced stability for greater productivity, a redesigned work-tool coupler, load-sensing hydraulics, and engines that meet U.S. EPA Tier-4 Interim and E.U. Stage-3A emissions regulations. Models 303.5D CR and 304D CR are zero-tail-swing machines

that keep the radius of the upper body within the width of the tracks; models 305D CR and 305.5D CR are compact-radius machines that limit upper-body tail swing over the tracks to 5.5 inches (140 mm) or less. Both designs reduce the machine’s operating footprint and simplify the operator’s job. Increased-width undercarriages for the 303.5D CR and 304D CR

and heavier counterweights for the 305D CR and 305.5D CR significantly enhance machine stability, allowing increased lift capacity, more effective use of reach and digging forces, increased capability when handling heavy work tools and improved machine balance for operator comfort. Similar to large excavators, D Series booms feature a curved design for digging flexibility and fabricated-box construction for strength and durability. The independent-swing boom allows digging next to walls and obstructions, and an optional long digging arm for each model increases digging depth and lift height. Cc

Volvo Expands the C-Series Skid Steer Loader Model Range

Volvo Construction Equipment introduces additions to its C-Series skid steer loader and compact track loader line to customers in North America. The new wheeled and tracked models available through the Volvo Construction Equipment dealer network are the radial lift 26

MC60C and MC70C, and the vertical lift MC85C, MC95C and MCT85C. Rated operating capacities for these models range from 1,350 pounds to 1,900 pounds and gross engine power from 48 hp to 59 hp. Featuring a unique single loader arm design, Volvo skid steer loaders and compact track loaders deliver customers the superior loading performance and durability found in a traditional skid steer design, along with the improved visibility, safety and enhanced cab access of a side-entry machine. Inside the Volvo cab, the operator’s environment

2012 Compact Equipment Issue CALCONTRACTOR

has been redesigned with increased space, comfort, and ease-of-use in mind. Another feature of the Volvo C-Series is service access through a forward-tilting cab and large rear compartment service door. All service and maintenance points are accessible through simple, safe means. In addition, the side entry and exit of the cab makes it possible for the operator to engage the loader arm support without the aid of a second person. Because of the side door, the operator can stop the machine, safely exit the machine without walking under the attachment, and then walk around the rear of the machine to safely engage the support. World market leader Wirtgen sets standards with the small milling machine W 50 DC For decades, the name Wirtgen has been synonymous with innovative, high-quality milling technology worldwide. The company offers its customers a complete range of products that leaves nothing to be desired and is unrivalled in the international market. Since it appeared on the market, the W 50 DC has set standards in the 50-cm class with its low operating costs, sophisticated technology and rugged design. The first thing that strikes anyone seeing this generation of small milling machines from Wirtgen is their distinctive and unmistakable Wirtgen design. The compact W 50 DC is an all-rounder for contractors and milling service providers. It is primarily used for tie-in work, removing pavement strips,

cutting grooves, partial pavement repairs, clearing manhole covers and milling concrete. The W 50 DC is driven by a Deutz engine rated at 92 kW and can achieve a milling depth of up to 210 mm. The quick change system for milling drums, also known as the Flexible Cutter System (FCS), permits the use of many different milling drum widths and tool spacings, as well as customized forms. Since the milling drums are easily replaced, the W 50 DC can be used for different milling jobs within a very short space of time. At present, there are more than 60 different specialpurpose and standard milling drums available altogether, including some with special

scraper blade systems. Full milling depth is assured at all times, even when working with reduced milling width or with special milling drums. Corresponding units and the necessary know-how are also available for special applications, such as milling steep slopes. This considerably greater flexibility clearly sets Wirtgen apart from the competition. Cc

Nixon-Egli Equipment Co., Vögele and Coastal Paving Inc.

Coastal Paving crew members Daniel Cortez and Jessie “Chuy” Carbajal use their Vogele Super 700 to pave over a utility trench in Novato, California.

Coastal Paving out of Santa Clara, California has been providing superior quality paving solutions since 1982, to notable businesses throughout Silicon Valley, California, Nevada and the entire West Coast. Coastal Paving is also a proud WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise) with more than 40 field employees, all with many years of experience in paving, asphalt repair and maintenance. Coastal Paving focuses on commercial, industrial, HOA and trench utility type paving work. This type of work calls for a specific type of machine, and Coastal Paving turned to their trusted supplier Nixon-Egli Equipment Company to fulfill this need. Robert Jarvis, vice president of Coastal Paving explains, “We just recently purchased a Vogele Super 700 paver from Nixon-Egli Equipment. We looked at other brands, however the versatility of the Vogele is what really sold us. Its variable pave width perfectly suits the scope of our work, which involves paving over trenches. The Vogele Super 700 is really the only machine that is equipped to properly take on the task of paving over a two to four foot pipeline trench and on top of that it is just a quieter, more efficient machine.” Robert Jarvis and Coastal Paving have worked with Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. for many years and he comments, “The entire team at Nixon-Egli is great to work with. The moment I first called Nixon-Egli with questions about the Vogele, they went right to work and set up a demo for us. Within a few days, they had their professional sales and service team onsite with a fully equipped Vogele Super 700. I have to give a lot of credit to the Nixon-Egli sales representatives Steve Kekich and Jason Lacey. They were instrumental in making certain that the entire transaction went off seamlessly.”
