Reliable Equipment Rental, Inc. – Lillian Bowers Continues to Lead Her Team of Operators and Support Staff to New Heights at the Wonderful Age of 85 By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor THE EARLY YEARS Hobart and Lillian Bowers were married in North Carolina in 1955 and Hobart began working in a local hosiery mill. The young couple learned of a job opportunity working in another hosiery mill in California and with a used car and $165 to their name, they decided to drive across country to start a new life in the sunshine state. Sometimes things don’t work out like they are planned and when Hobart arrived for his first day of work, he knew that he was not going to last long under the below standard conditions. The mill was hot, loud and dangerous. Thankfully, Hobart was lucky enough to learn of another opportunity to work for General Motors in their Delco battery plant. So, Hobart and Lillian moved into a modest home on 7th Street in Buena Park, and started their new life of adventure and opportunity. Through fate or chance, things were about to change for Hobart and Lillian Bowers. A family member had borrowed some money from Hobart to purchase a used backhoe. The relative eventually decided that he wanted to move on to other ventures. With no money to repay the loan, Hobart’s relative made the decision to hand over his tractor backhoe as payment. Hobart Bowers grew up on a farm in North Carolina and 6

had been operating tractors for many years, and both he and Lillian saw this as a possible life-changing event. As equal partners, Lillian and Hobart penciled out their new business venture right there at their kitchen table with the idea that he would be in the field and she would be in the office. They both eagerly seized upon the opportunity as Hobart practiced his backhoe skills on an empty lot over a long Labor Day weekend. Soon after, Hobart and Lillian were ready to begin offering their services with his

newly mastered Ford 4140 backhoe. The year was 1963, and the Bowers’ decided to name their new business Hobart E. Bowers Backhoe Service. They started out doing various excavation duties for general contractors before landing a cleanup job for an oilfield operation in the late 60s. The business slowly grew and prospered to the point where the couple could buy a brand-new Ford 4500 with an HD-15 backhoe in 1966. By the end of the 60s, the company was running three to C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

four machines and was also able to hire a few additional operators. The 70s brought growth with more operators and equipment, rising to 35 employees by the end of the decade. The company grew to the point where they were doing much more than just backhoe work and the name was changed to Reliable Equipment Rental, Inc. in 1972 to reflect the new growth and direction. “My parents ran the business out of our home in Buena Park for nearly a decade. Eventually, the neighbors began to understandably complain CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

about the roaring diesel engines in the wee hours of the morning. This resulted in the purchase of two parcels of land at 8331 Commonwealth Avenue in Buena Park in 1972,” continues Hobie. “We eventually purchased two more acres of adjacent land and now operate both the equipment rental and screening rental business from this convenient location. It is a full-service 4-acre facility, complete with administrative offices, shop and service bays with an overhead crane and hoist, along

6

with fuel tanks and plenty of room for our entire equipment, truck, and trailer fleet.” BOWERS BROTHERS JOIN THE FAMILY BUSINESS Hobart and Lillian’s two sons worked part-time for the family enterprise ever since they were just kids. Things were a bit different in the 60s and 70s and working for your parent’s business at a young age was not only common but often expected. Both Hobie (Hobart) and Robert worked RE N TA L EQ UI PM E N T / 2 0 2 1

after school, during breaks, and throughout the summer doing everything from basic labor cleanup work to driving a truck or operating a piece of machinery. “We would run the 4500 for a variety of excavation duties, as well as with a rototiller attachment or an auger for drilling holes,” says Hobie. “I started working full time for the company after graduating high school in 1974, and my brother did the same when he graduated two years later. We got our Class 1 license at 16 so that we could drive trucks, and we both continue to enjoy what we do to this day.” Both Hobie and Robert maintain particular traits and abilities that make them separate and unique assets to the family business. Hobie enrolled in select college courses that allowed him to contribute to the company’s estimating and management responsibilities. Hobie also holds the Class A contractors license and Hazardous Waste Certification. On the other hand, Robert is an amazingly skilled operator who has repeatedly won prizes in Caterpillar skill competitions over the years. His family refers to him as “a natural” who can quickly pickup new skills and applications and share them with the other operators. Robert also excels at running all aspects of large projects seamlessly. 8

MOM AND DAD Hobie says that he and his brother are proud to be a part of Reliable Equipment Rental’s success but makes it clear that their mom and dad deserve most of the credit and recognition. “My mother knows what hard work is because she has been at it since her youth when she picked cotton and worked in the sweatshop textile business. She built upon that work ethic by working tirelessly, doing all of the phone work, the billing and the general handling of all the finances for Reliable. I mean she wore a lot of hats. She was a mother busy with small children, ran the household and put in as many hours as anyone running the business. She would even drive a truck and deliver tractors while my brother Rob and I would load and unload the equipment. She still signs the payroll every week and makes all of the purchasing and banking decisions,” says Hobie. “My dad taught us everything he knew and continued to operate equipment through 1993 when he started his new business, Reliable Screening. Anytime we needed him to help out or run a machine, he was there for us. We lost our dad around five years back and although he is sorely missed, his legacy lives on through me, my mom, and my brother. He was a legend.”

REN TAL EQU I P MENT / 2 0 2 1

RELIABLE SCREENING, INC. Hobart Bowers started Reliable Screening in 1993 to fill the growing need for material screening services in Southern California. The company started out renting crushers, screens, conveyors, and other machines manufactured by Powerscreen. “We rented and supported Powerscreen equipment and even served as a dealer for Powerscreen for a period of 10 years,” says Hobie. “We continue to offer full rental services of all Powerscreen equipment, and this has been a great addition to our operated equipment rental business.” IT TAKES A VILLAGE Hobie says that the daily operations of running Reliable Equipment Rental and Reliable Screening have always been a community effort. “My brother Rob and I run both businesses with the full direction of our mother, Lillian,” says Hobie. “Our mother owns both companies and is still actively running the business at the age of 85. She is and has never been shy about telling us how she wants things done.” Hobie says that he and his family and every other team member are just trying to get through the mess that the virus has created at this time. “We can see the light { Continued on page 10 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

at the end of the tunnel and are standing ready to continue growing slowly and steadily into the future,” continues Hobie. “My brother and I are both operators, and we work during the day, do bids at night, and look over prospective jobs over the weekends. It is a continued effort that requires the best out of every team member working here at Reliable Equipment Rental.” THE COMPANY TODAY Reliable Equipment Rental hit its peak in the late 80s and early 90s when they had around 40 employees on their payroll. The company now has 15 employees that include eight operators and seven other field, office and support staff. Reliable Equipment Rentals provides complete oil and gas field construction services that include environmental services, earthmoving services, drill rig pad building, drilling rig support services, road building and maintenance, sediment and catch basin building and maintenance, and a long list of other general contracting services. “ I am out on an oilfield cleanup job in the south LA area right now, while my brother is doing a similar oilfield cleanup up in northern LA. We work from Bakersfield all the way to the Imperial Valley,” says Hobie. “The work 10

keeps coming, and that is not by accident. We have built upon the legacy of our parent’s efforts, and the goodwill continues to spread. My mother and father always said, ‘if you take good care of your customers, they will take good care of you.’ This simple phrase was instilled in every fiber of our being growing up in this business.” THE EQUIPMENT FLEET Reliable Equipment Rental’s equipment fleet is made up primarily of Cat and John Deere machines. “In general, Cat represents our bigger machines, while John Deere covers our mid-sized and smaller pieces of equipment,” says Hobie. According to Hobie, this includes two Cat 963D crawler loaders that they just purchased this past July. Additionally, the company offers seven backhoes, made up of both John Deere and Cat units of all sizes. They also have a John Deere 270 excavator, a John Deere 644 wheel loader, several skid steer loaders, mini excavators, skip loaders and any attachment or ancillary component you could ever need for any project. Reliable Equipment Rental also has an impressive fleet of trucks, tenwheelers, bobtails, and lowbeds. CONCLUSION While Reliable Equipment Rental’s bread and butter work remains in the energy sector and particularly with oil fields, they also maintain operated equipment rentals to all sorts of general engineering contractors throughout Southern

California. “We hold a Class A general engineering contractors license, a C21 demolition license, and various hazmat credentials and licenses. Our diversity is what keeps us busy and on call for a variety of services, day and night,” says Hobie. “It is also our experienced and dedicated team members that are responsible for our long-term success these past 58-plus years. We just had an employee retire that had been with us for 47 years and many others that are 20-plus years. They stay with us because we are a family, and we treat one another with dignity and respect.” Lillian and Hobart have five grandchildren, all of whom have worked at one time or another in the family business. Hobie has two daughters that are working their way through graduate school. One of his daughters helps out with office communication duties, and the other not only worked in the A/R department, but also worked out into the field operating a water truck. Robert has two sons and a daughter. The boys learned a great deal about transporting heavy equipment working for their grandparents. They both now live in Texas where their trucking experience and reputation has earned them high paying jobs in transportation and logistics. Rob’s daughter also contributed by working in the office. “There may be nothing more rewarding than working with your family toward a common goal of excellence,” concludes Hobie. “I also want to recognize and thank all of our customers and our employees for being such great friends and partners. They too are family and nothing would be possible without the entire community effort.” For more information on Reliable Equipment Rentals, please log on to reliableequipmentinc.com or call their Buena Park headquarters at (714) 522-6440. Production Class Performance and Cutting-Edge Technology, Ready to Rent Big

R

enting heavy, production class equipment (PCE) has never been easier with Coastline Equipment’s heavy equipment rental program. Coastline’s expertly maintained fleet of production-class excavators, wheel loaders, crawler dozers, and articulated haul trucks are packed with the latest technology that John Deere and Hitachi have to offer. Steve Malloy (Malloy) has been with Coastline Equipment for just over four years and with John Deere in various capacities for 28 years. Malloy is the corporate sales director for Coastline Equipment, and he is responsible for complete goods sales and rentals. “Production class equipment rentals offer an opportunity for contractors to leverage our inventory for their construction projects. They don’t have to shell out huge sums of money to get after these demanding projects,” says Malloy. “We offer the latest emission certified machines and most technically advanced gear available on the market. Our PCE offerings include late model lower hour John Deere and Hitachi excavators from 100,000 lb. operating weight and above. We also have wheel loaders from 5-yard and up, dozers in the 65,000 lb. weight class and above and articulated rock trucks from the 31 to 46 metric ton capacity.”

Steve Malloy, Corporate Sales Director, Coastline Equipment.

Malloy says that John Deere and Hitachi are probably some of the best-kept secrets in the construction industry regarding production class equipment (PCE). “In some cases, our bigger equipment represents the best of what John Deere and Hitachi have to offer. As the demand for larger equipment continues to grow, so do the services we offer here at Coastline Equipment,” says Malloy. “This is not your daddy’s Coastline any longer. It has become necessary to evolve into a very different dealer group that provides even more value to the customers we serve while always maintaining that hometown,

local John Deere service atmosphere. This has required us to step into a space where we have expanded operations with brandnew facilities and technology. It also means that we recognize the continued and growing need for bigger, heavier pieces of rental equipment.” Coastline’s target audience for their PCE rental program could be contractors involved with building roads or bridges, manufacturing aggregates, or involved with a long list of other heavy civil development projects. “We remain open and transparent that our end game is to get our machines off our balance sheet and into the hands of our customers who can make money with these assets. Rentals are a means to an end for us, and we work with many other rent-to-rent companies on new sales and as re-rent partners. Our inventory is always available to our rental partners in an industry where investment in production-class equipment can be extremely daunting. We have to provide more value in the rental of production class equipment, and that is why so many purchases start as a rental-purchase option (RPO) agreement. Our program also allows for the flexibility of renting the machine first to assure that it is the right fit for each specific contractor’s individual needs.” C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

One of the rental incentives that Coastline has going right now to highlight their PCE rental offerings includes a 20% discount on monthly rental contracts. “We are offering a 20% discount incentive as a way of partnering with our customers. We want to remain price competitive and provide an opportunity for our clients to experience the benefits of low hour, late model John Deere and Hitachi production class equipment,” says Malloy. “We extend an invitation to those interested in partnering with us on PCE rentals to contact their local Coastline facility and ask about our aggressive discounting for monthly minimums.” Coastline has built upon and enjoyed a stellar reputation for its utility equipment rental offerings and according to Malloy, the PCE rental opportunities are quite similar but also very different. “I think what happens within the rental space is there are fewer vendors that are going to be in the production class space due to the tremendous capital needed and the general nature of the investment,” says Malloy. “Heavy equipment distributors and large independent operated and bare rental equipment companies are going to offer this product, rather than your smaller or even national rental equipment companies. It is a specialized niche for this larger equipment for heavy civil work, and we have the perfect product line to support our customers.” CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

Malloy points out what makes renting heavy equipment through a dealer different and unique. “We are a bit different from the typical dedicated rent-to-rent company in that we provide an opportunity to set-up the option to accumulate equity in advance. This is only possible with a dealer, as many other rental companies are rental only, and their machine is considered an ongoing asset,” continues Malloy. “I believe that we offer a bit more flexibility for those longterm rental situations to turn into a smart and affordable purchase.” Malloy says that Coastline’s rental rates are market-driven and extremely competitive with other PCE rental companies. “Contractors have grown in size and complexity through mergers and acquisitions just through the general competitive nature of the business. This means that bonding capacities are much larger, as is the general scope of work,” continues Malloy. “Because of this, Coastline’s interest in PCE rentals has also organically expanded. Larger, more productive machines are in high demand, and we want to a valued partner in supplying that equipment to our customers.” Part of being on the leading edge of PCE rentals is having the right people and technology to fully support each individual customer’s needs. Coastline’s machine monitoring department is one example of how the company is supporting its PCE rental customers. JD Link Telematics is implemented and used to maximize

the health and efficiency of every PCE rental. “We can many times resolve potential issues remotely through our telematics technology. We maintain a staff that keeps a watchful eye on each machine that is out on rent. Additionally, we gather consolidated data on each machine to help us recognize the root cause of failures or maintenance issues,” continues Malloy. “It is also important to note that Coastline takes care of all preventative maintenance for the duration of the rental. There are no dribble-in expenses associated with the rental experience. It is all built into the rate. The customer takes care of the daily consumables like fuel and wear parts and we do the rest.” Coastline’s PCE rental program also comes with the availability of world-class Topcon precision construction technology. “Our Topcon Grade Control technology maximizes production on large excavators and dozers where speed is key and precision grade is critical. Topcon can take your average operator and allow them to perform at tolerances that were only possible with the most highly skilled operators of the past,” says Malloy. “This technology is available for rental on many of our PCE machines. A considerable amount of our PCE fleet is precision technology ready, whether for Topcon or any other competitive brand. We have plug and play platforms available, or a customer can choose to rent our Topcon units as part of their rental-purchase agreement.”

13

Malloy makes it clear that a Coastline PCE rental customer will receive the most technologically advanced equipment with the latest emissions technology, backed by a dealership that is trained, stocked, and staffed to fully support the entire equipment rental experience. “For years, John Deere has been this kind of utility darling that has frankly found great success in the utility machine space. We want to now bring greater attention to our production class line that is now in such high demand,” says Malloy. “We have one of the deepest and widest product lines available, and we are number two in market share in North America. Still, many are not fully aware of our larger PCE inventory and capabilities, and we feel that rental is a leading indicator and door to dealing with these larger civil general engineering contractors.” Coastline Equipment rents big and partners big to support their customers with the heavy equipment

they need. Every rental is backed by John Deere and the entire Coastline team, so you can trust that they will do everything possible to keep you up and running. “If you are looking for the best in late model, low hour production class equipment, we are standing ready to meet your needs. Everything is backed with original OEM parts and service, a factory warranty,

and factory-trained technicians and support,” concludes Malloy. “Give us a call. We think you will like everything you get with our aggressive PCE rental program.” For more information on Coastline Equipment’s production class equipment rentals, please visit their website at www.coastlineequipment.com or call (888) 506-2408. Industry Leaders in Heavy Equipment Rental since 1966

Uprite Construction Trusts C5 Equipment Rentals for their Heavy Equipment Needs on Amazon Distribution Center Projects By Brian Hoover, Senior Editor

U

prite Construction (Uprite) has worked on many construction projects since its inception in 1991. The company specializes in industrial, office, retail, mixed-use, medical, and heavy civil construction services throughout the West Coast. Their commitment begins at the preconstruction stage, as they act as a liaison between all entities who contribute to a projects master plan. Uprite self performs early upfront at-risk demolition and earthwork and that is where they find the need for C5 Equipment Rentals and operated equipment rental services. Jason Kinoshita joined the Uprite team a few months back as a Superintendent overseeing the day-to-day operations out in the field. “We are a general civil engineering contractor that is now self-performing the bulk of our grading and other new earthwork duties. This includes mass grading, fine and finish grading disciplines, as well as any general excavation duties,”

says Kinoshita. “With several earthmoving projects already complete, we most recently began moving dirt at the Amazon distribution center in the Inland Empire. We were contracted as the main GC and chose to perform

the rough and fine grade on this project, as well as some select demolition.” According to Kinoshita, the project’s earthmoving portion began on January 19 and was completed at the end of February. C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M

The work performed by Uprite was at an existing facility and grading was necessary to make room for other infrastructure and generally overhaul the entire exterior site. “We began our contract by demoing all of the existing hardscape around the entire building. Additionally, we cut in a new parking lot, loading docks, a drive area for the vans and trucks, and excavated a new bioretention CALCON TRAC TOR.CO M

basin. We moved around 40,000 cubic yards of earth on this particular project.” Uprite has an existing fleet of heavy machinery that consists of excavators, wheel loaders, skip loaders and skid steers, but when it comes to the big machines like scrapers and blades, they are currently renting from local bare or operated rental equipment companies. Dirk Johnson is the

grading foreman for Uprite, and he is often called on to assist in the procurement of rental equipment. “Our Project Manager, Tyler Faulkner, asked me and one of our operators, Robert Manhart, to find a 623 scraper for the thenupcoming Amazon distribution center project. past when working for other earthmoving companies,” says Johnson. “The main reason we like to deal with C5 is that the owner cares, which filters down to the company’s sales representatives. Our C5 representative is Tom Callus, and he always takes the time to listen to specific needs and then responds with the best possible solution and great rates. We are critical and very picky about the machinery we rent and the operators that end up on our projects. Tom and the support staff at C5 have always treated us right, and we know that we will always receive top-quality operators and equipment.” Uprite ended up renting several operated machines from C5 Equipment Rentals for the distribution center project. This included a Cat 623G scraper, a 18

John Deere 770G motor grader, and a Cat 966M wheel loader. This is the first time that we have used C5 Equipment Rentals at Uprite, but I have personally worked with them in the past, and they have always done a great job,” says Kinoshita. “We were working in some very heavy clay soil on the Amazon distribution center project, and the C5 operators made quick work of a challenging situation. I am told that we have several other earthmoving projects on the books, and I am looking forward to our continued success in our newly-expanded earthmoving division.” For more information on Uprite Construction, please visit their website at upriteco.com or call their corporate offices in Irvine at (949) 877-8877. ewman Backhoe Service, Inc. has been providing quality construction equipment for site work and road construction since the early 1950s. It all started in 1954 when Herbert and Swanna Newman purchased their first Ford backhoe and began offering their operated equipment services. From the beginning, Herbert and Swanna Newman recognized the role that their loyal customers 20

would play in the success of their business. It is these very relationships that have driven Newman Backhoe Service to continued excellence as their reputation for quality, friendly and expert service proceeds them from one job to the next. Janet Newman Ferguson is the current owner and president of Newman Backhoe Service, Inc. “We are a family-owned and operated company with the fourth generation currently working here

at Newman Backhoe Service. We live and work by the strong work ethic and exemplary values that were instilled in us by my mother and father, Herbert and Swanna Newman,” says Janet. “My daughter, Nikki Worden and granddaughter, Amanda Matson, are following in these footsteps by staying true to the past while teaching future generations the importance of providing quality service. both integral parts of helping me run the day-to-day operations of this company.” Newman Backhoe Service, Inc. is a 100% woman-owned business with the following certifications: WBE (Woman Business Enterprise Certification), DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Certification), SBE (Small Business Enterprise Certification). Newman Backhoe Service also subscribes to Veriforce as one way they continue to enhance safety, remain in compliance and mitigate risk. They are also current members of AGC (Associated General Contractors Association), SCCA (Southern California Contractors Association), and I.U.O.E. Local Union 12 (International Union of Operating Engineers). Newman Backhoe Service has played an essential role in numerous public works and private development projects over the past 67 years. They have successfully grown and adapted to meet the transitioning construction industry and each unique, individual customer need. Newman Backhoe

Service has been by their customer’s side from the days of the orange groves in Garden Grove to the construction of the I-15 Express Lanes. They were there when Disneyland was being built and helped to construct the Sofi Stadium. Newman Backhoe Service continues to be a 24-hour, seven-day a week driven company. “We pride ourselves on our experience to deliver quality union operators to ensure safe and ontime completion,” continues Janet. “Whether you need backhoes and operators during the week or a skid steer at 3:00 a.m., we will be there for you.” Nikki Worden serves as the vice president for Newman Backhoe Service, and she reflects on some of the defining moments of the company’s growth. “We have worked on some of the largest construction projects in Southern California such as the Los Angeles River, 10 Freeway, 605/22 Freeway, 91 Freeway Expansion, 10/57 Freeway project, I-15 Freeway, Devil’s Gate, various

Disneyland expansions, and a long list of projects at LAX and the Port of Long Beach,” says Nikki. “In 2020, we wrapped up the Skanska-Ames JV I-15 Freeway project, and we are still working on the $500,000 contract for MCM Construction Schuyler Heim Bridge project. We continue to work at LAX and Port of Long Beach on jobs that started in 2020. Not every job is high-profile, but every job is important and big or small; we are there to give it our all.” Newman Backhoe Service, Inc. (Newman) has also recently completed or is currently on many high-profile projects throughout Southern California. This includes the Midfield Satellite Concourse MSC North Los Angeles World Airport in Los Angeles. Newman completed this approximately $900,000 contract in Dec. 2020. Newman is currently working on the I-15 Express Lanes Project in Corona, which will come in at right around $1,000,000 when their work is complete. Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park and SoFi

Stadium in Inglewood are also in progress. Work at various locations for the Los Angeles Unified School District is also active, as is the ongoing I-15 Freeway project in Glen Helen. Newman Backhoe Service has purchased and relied on various brands of construction equipment over the past 67 years. They started with Ford backhoes and eventually added specific task-oriented John Deere and Case units to their fleet. “We added a John Deere 710 backhoe to our fleet in 2011 and that was a real game-changer for us. The JD 710 represented the biggest, most powerful backhoe on the market at that time and we immediately added it to our fleet. We eventually converted our fleet to John Deere except for a few Case skip loaders,” says Nikki. “Our entire fleet will soon be all John Deere and include 710, 410, and 310 backhoes, skid steers, mini excavators, and skip loaders.” Newman also offers auger attachments, wheel compactors, vibratory compactors, breakers, adjustable Vee Ditch buckets, and a vast inventory of other specialty buckets. “We are

well-known throughout the industry for the variety of specialty buckets and attachments that we provide to our customers,” continues Nikki. “This includes swivels for grading slope, as well as six-foot and seven-foot grading buckets.” Chris Cesa, from Coastline Equipment, is Newman’s John Deere sales representative. “No matter what the issue or question, Chris always has the right answer. Chris provides excellent customer service, and Jesse Sanchez their field service dispatcher and Albert Navarro in rental dispatch are always there when we need them as well,” says Nikki. “I will give you an example of how great Coastline has been to us over the years. We had one of our operators with a JD 410 backhoe working at the Port of Long Beach, and Coastline called to let us know that they were alerted to a serious potential problem. Their JDLink™ telematics monitoring program received these codes that indicated a serious issue with our JD 410 backhoe. Coastline was { Continued on page 24 } C A LCO N T R AC TO R .CO M
