Irwindale Plant Turns To Volvo Construction Equipment & Services For Specialized Volvo A30F Articulated Hauler Written By: Brian Hoover

hen the Interstate Highway System was authorized by the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 (also known as the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act), a network of freeways were constructed that if linked together would extend more than 47,000 miles. This development led to urban sprawl and eventually to the development of the suburbs. The population of California grew from just shy of 16 million in 1960 to more than 38 million in 2013, due in no small part to the access made available through the new freeway systems. The Hanson Aggregates Irwindale Sand & Gravel operations started in 1909 then known as Graham Brothers Materials later called LivingstonGraham. This facility has been a 6

major contributor to the development of infrastructure throughout the Southern California region. In the early 1960s Hanson’s Irwindale operations built crushing station towers up to 5 stories high designed to allow on road trucks to load out aggregates in sub-terrain tunnels under material bunkers. In those days the on road trucks could maneuver easily through the tunnel design to load and then proceed to the scale and ticketing station. Through the years with material demand and sales volume increases, the business model and operation configuration needed to adjust to accommodate. So the management at Hanson decided to utilize off road haul trucks to load out through the tunnel system and stockpile larger

2013 Specialty/landscape specialty/landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR

quantities of product to meet the demand. This created a challenge to find large enough off road trucks that could cost effectively haul the aggregate to the stockpiles. The tunnel beneath the crushing station could not be modified because its massive concrete walls, ceiling and base were serving as the foundation of the entire tower. Back in the 1980s Hanson purchased larger articulated trucks that had been modified, however as the maintenance costs continued to escalate and parts became harder to find, it was clear that they needed to find new replacement vehicles. Michael Rogers is the Operations Manager at Hanson Irwindale plant. His responsibilities include all aspects of this facility from major capital improvement www.calcontractor.com

projects to day-to-day production of the dredging of sand and gravel to the processing of finished aggregate products. All of their aggregate material is mined underwater at the Irwindale plant. They utilize a double clam shell dredge operation, where two 18 cubic yard clam shell buckets excavate sand and gravel via a cable crane, up to 250 feet deep from a floating platform. Hanson operates two different types of dredge plants on the water. The second is a cutter suction dredge used to remove silts. Michael Rogers has been with the company since 1987 and was promoted to the Irwindale position in fall of 2011. Hanson had already been researching and talking to several manufacturers to see if they had an articulated haul truck that could fit their specifications. It seemed that none of the newer trucks would safely fit through the tight tunnel space. Some were close, but www.calcontractor.com

too close for comfort. In early 2012, Michael Rogers promoted Mike Hanna to Plant Manager for Irwindale. “I asked Mike Hanna to make this a priority in 2012 and exhaust every resource to see if there was something out there that could meet our challenging situation,” says Rogers. “Volvo was one of the manufacturers contacted during our search and they felt that they had a unit that would meet our needs, so our plant manager, Mike Hanna set up a meeting.” Mike Mathews is the President of Volvo Construction Equipment Services, overseeing six locations throughout California. Mike personally got involved with this project along with the assistance of one of his Volvo heavy equipment sales representatives, Mike Burrell. Mike Burrell was uniquely qualified for this task, as he had worked for more than a decade in San Diego County as a heavy equipment operator for another quarry operation.

Burrell was not only familiar with the operation of articulated haul trucks, but also all of the mandatory safety requirements that exist. “I had a meeting with John Portlock, who is heavy equipment manager for Hanson Aggregates when I first started with Volvo and he made me aware of their need for a specialized articulated haul truck in Irwindale,” says Burrell. “I told John that I would meet with our president, Mike Mathews, and get back to him with more details.” Burrell got back with John Portlock with what he thought would be an ideal solution and was soon asked to come in for a closer look by Michael Rogers through Mike Hanna. “We let them know that we felt that our Volvo A30F articulated haul truck would fit the bill and that there was a unit in Colorado that we could get for them to try out, says Burrell. “When the Volvo

8

A30F arrived it fit through the tunnel with a couple of inches of headroom to spare. Mike Rogers decided to rent the unit for a period of time to see how it worked out.” The Volvo A30F was a low profile truck designed for use in mining operations, however the standard cab was still too close for comfort and after renting the unit for a while, Mike Rogers called Volvo in for another meeting. Mike Mathews and Mike Burrell let Mike Rogers know that the Volvo factory could make modifications to the cab and truck bed headboard. This would be accomplished by cutting down the top of the cab and lowering the seat, as well as cutting down the header extension of the bed, which would

2013 Specialty/landscape specialty/landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR

also allow the operators to view the payload better. They emphasized that this could all be done without compromising the suspension or strength and integrity of the unit. “We put the order in for the modified version of the Volvo A30F and several months later we tried it out for the first time,” says Hanson’s, Michael Rogers. “Volvo was able to bring the cab height down to 9 feet 11 inches, allowing for almost a full 9 inches of clearance in our tunnel.”

Volvo Construction Equipment is the world’s largest manufacturer of articulated haulers and wheel loaders, and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of excavation equipment, road development machines and compact construction equipment. Volvo articulated haulers are available in seven models (A25F, A30F, A35F, A35F FS, A40F A40F FS), ranging in capacity from 26.5 tons to 43 tons. “Volvo introduced the first articulated haulers to the market back in 1966 and we remain the industry leader. Volvo has been recognized with numerous innovation awards and we have made our reputation here in California by coming up with solutions to challenging situations,” says Burrell. You won’t find many dealers or manufacturers that will do this sort of thing on a one-off sale situation, but we create and build on relationships

with the future in mind. In this particular case we were able to meet Hanson Aggregate’s specific custom needs very economically with the numbers coming in just a few thousand over the cost of a standard Volvo A30F. We will continue to strive to be the dealer and manufacturer that goes that extra mile for our customers.” Hanson Aggregates is part of the Lehigh Hanson companies, which in turn is part of the HeidelbergCement Group, one of the largest building materials manufacturers in the world. With hundreds of production sites across the U.S. and Canada, Lehigh Hanson is one of the largest construction materials companies in North America. They produce cement, aggregates (crushed rock, sand and gravel), ready mixed concrete, asphalt, and a range of other building materials including precast

concrete products, pressure and gravity pipes, tiles and clay bricks. For more information on Lehigh Hanson companies please visit online at www.lehighhanson.com Cc

ATKINSON CONSTRUCTION CALLS ON NATIONAL DEMOLITION CONTRACTORS TO DEMO BRIDGES ON WEST COUNTY CONNECTORS PROJECT Written By: Brian Hoover

T

he California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Awarded Atkinson Contractors, LP the $102 million contract for the SR-22/I-405/605 West County Connector Project – Western Segment. The construction is part of a $277-million West County Connectors Project that is a continuation of the previously awarded SR-22/I405 West County Connector Eastern project. This connected corridor endures over 900,000 daily trips and has been in need of a way to reduce congestion and increase mobility for some time.

10

Traffic flow on all three freeways will benefit from the carpool connectors by reducing vehicles weaving from carpool lanes across general traffic lanes to connect to carpool lanes on either the 405, 605 or the 22. The West County Connectors Project is a key component in Orange County’s overall transportation plan and is a joint partnership between Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and Caltrans. The five mile-long project creates a seamless carpool connection, linking high occupancy vehicle

(HOV) lanes/carpool lanes on the San Diego Freeway (I-405) with those on the Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) and San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605). New ramps will allow carpoolers to conveniently transition in both directions from the SR-22 to the I-405 and from the I-405 to the I-605 without ever leaving the carpool lane. Additionally, a new carpool lane will be added in each direction on the I-405, as well as new freeway overcrossings, sound walls, retaining walls and various landscaping. www.calcontractor.com

Above: National Demolition Contractors was called upon to demo both the Seal Beach Boulevard Bridge and the I-605/I-405 Interchange.

The overall project is scheduled for completion by the end of the year or early 2014. It was necessary that several structures including bridges be demolished to make room for either new on or off ramps, carpool lanes or newer, wider bridges. National Demolition Contractors has a proven reputation for safety and excellence and has been serving contractors like Atkinson Construction for more than a decade. National was called upon to demo both the Seal Beach Boulevard Bridge and the I-605/I-405 Interchange. The 405/Seal Beach overpass demolition was accomplished in back to back nighttime closures Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, 12

Sept. 21. The northbound section was demoed Friday night, followed by the southbound the very next evening. Jorge Rodriquez, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager for National Demolition Contractors was overseeing both bridge demolitions. “We went to work with a heavy fleet, great management, including Project Managers Richard Alarcon and Dave Alexander and what I believe to be the industries most experienced operators. There was no room for error or delay, as we were given just five hours to demo the first northbound section, with a $1,000 fine hanging over our heads for every minute we went

over the allotted closure time. The next night we took on the southbound section with the same restrictions,” says Rodriquez. “Our first and main goal is always to assure that everyone goes home safe. Next, was to make sure the freeway was opened on time and I am proud to say that we were ahead of schedule every night. This was another very successful project for all of us here at National.” The Seal Beach Boulevard Bridge was first constructed back in 1966 and will be reconstructed, essentially doubling in size. National Demolition Contractors utilized 80,000 lb. to 120,000 lb. Caterpillar excavators equipped www.calcontractor.com

Poppin IBackhoe Service

Puts Finishing Touches On Work For Port of Los Angeles with the Help of their Fleet of LiuGong Construction Machines Written By: Brian Hoover / Photos By: Blanca Marisa Garcia oppin Backhoe Service has been very busy over the past year, finishing two contracts for the Port of Los Angeles. Both projects are within a few weeks of completion and include work on Berth 100 and Berth 302/305. The Berth 100 contract was performed as a subcontractor for general contractor Reyes Construction. Poppin’s $1.4 million portion included the excavation and installation of waterline and storm drain systems. In all, around 3,200 linear feet of 12” waterline was installed, along with a thousand feet of storm drainpipe and 14

another thousand feet of cast-inplace trench drain. One of the more challenging aspects of this particular job was installing pipe underneath the wharf with the use of LiuGong excavators to lower the utility lines to crew members standing ready in boats for permanent installation. The $2.2 million contract at Berth 302/305 on Terminal Island for the Port of Los Angeles involved the removal of 23,000 tons of chemically impacted soil. Poppin Backhoe Service also excavated 25,000 feet of trench for Dynaelectric for the installation of new electric lines and power grid for Berths 302 and 305.

2013 specialty/landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR

Poppin Backhoe Service owner, Bruce Poppin makes it clear that his company’s contracts at the Port of Los Angeles were made possible by the Port encouraging general contractors to work with small businesses associated with Very Small Business Enterprise (VSBE). “I want to sincerely thank the Port of Los Angeles and the general contractors who gave us a chance to be part of these important Port of Los Angeles projects,” says Poppin. “This work has allowed us to grow and bid on larger projects. It is our sincere goal to be able to pay this forward by helping other small businesses in the future.” www.calcontractor.com

Poppin Backhoe Service holds a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) license, as well as a General Contractors “A” license. This allows Poppin Backhoe Service to offer a seamless service where upon they are able to perform grading and excavating duties and then remove and abate any hazardous materials found during construction. When CalContractor Magazine last visited with Bruce Poppin, he was working out at the Port of Los Angeles with his then new 16

LiuGong machines including the LiuGong 766 Backhoe Loader, LiuGong 842III 3 Yard Wheel Loader and a LiuGong 906 Compact Excavator. “Over the course of the past year of work out at the Port of Los Angeles, we have had the opportunity to put our LiuGong machines to the test. My initial concern was getting parts for these machines. This was quickly put to rest as the LiuGong motors are manufactured by Cummins with American made

2013 specialty/landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR

components throughout that are readily available anywhere in the world,” says Poppin. In addition, our dealer, Westrax Machinery maintains a multimillion dollar inventory, so we get most everything we need within 24 hours or less.” Parts and service availability is certainly a key criteria when making this kind of investment, but what about the way the machines productivity, reliability and comfort? “Our operators love everything about the www.calcontractor.com

Liugong machines. We have worked these LiuGong’s very hard over the past year and they have stood up to every task. When we did have any small issues, Westrax was out on our job immediately to take care of it,” says Poppin. “We have had very little downtime and the support we have received from Dennis McShane and everyone at Westrax Machinery has been truly remarkable. Getting performance, service and longevity all at a price that can’t be beat has made a big difference to our bottom line.” After renting LiuGong excavators for work out at the Port, Bruce Poppin decided that it was time to add the new LiuGong 922LC Excavator to his fleet to break out concrete material and for the installation of 36” concrete storm drainpipe. www.calcontractor.com

“Going with LiuGong just makes economic sense. You can buy two machines for the price of one, they come 100 percent emission compliant and you get a 3-year warranty to boot,” says Poppin. “I have been running this size excavator since back in 1973 and I would put our LiuGong up against the industries best selling excavator any day of the week. We have even procured some equipment rental business from contractors that have seen our operators at work with the LiuGong machines.”

Poppin Backhoe Service is now bidding much larger jobs and they are currently looking at adding a LiuGong 4-Yard Wheel Loader to their fleet and possibly a larger 80 to 90 thousand pound LiuGong excavator as well. Poppin Backhoe Service specializes in trenching for utilities and the installation of sewer lines, water lines and storm drain systems. Their large fleet of LiuGong machinery is also available on an operated equipment rental basis. Please call Bruce Poppin at their Signal Hill offices at (714) 913-5238. Cc

Southern California’s Most Distinctive Landscapes Since 1975

Written By: Brian Hoover

K

evin Persons has lived and worked in Ventura County for more than 25 years and has been providing some of Southern California’s most distinctive landscapes since 1975. Grounds Maintenance Services’ business consists primarily of landscape, hardscape and maintenance services for high-end private estates and residences. GMS also performs work for large municipal properties, hotels and resorts, corporate campuses and office buildings, golf courses, public highways,

18

theme parks, museums and sport venues. Sarah Corbin is the General Manager for GMS and she has been with the company for approximately 14 years. “We are proud to provide our clients with the highest quality of service at a reasonable cost,” says Corbin. “We offer landscape Design/Build Services, as well as Full Service Landscape Maintenance and Management. We are truly a full service company, from moving trees in massive 140” boxes to designing and installing

irrigation and drainage systems; we can do it all.” GMS really shines when it comes to designing and installing sustainable native landscapes. This requires the proper balance and use of both living and non-living materials. Although man-made, the ecosystem is such that the soil, plants, water, wood and stone work together in harmony to provide a naturally beautiful setting. GMS is licensed in California and Nevada, but the majority of their contracts are located in Ventura or Los Angeles County

and as far north as Santa Clarita. The company maintains a wide range of heavy equipment and highly qualified operators. They put this equipment to use recently on a private demolition and restoration project on the coast near Malibu. The job involved the removal of existing hardscape that was later replaced by native vegetation. The county of Los Angeles is also taking part is this project that has been active on and off now for over a year and should be completed by the end of 2015. “This is a big job for us, not just in a monetary way, but also because our work encompasses close to 52-acres. We strive everyday and on all of our projects to give back to the planet. We are very excited about this particular project because it is a native restoration,” explains Corbin. “The hardscape has been in place for many years and the owner wanted it removed and the environment restored back to its original native plantings. We are very honored to be a part of this effort to bring back native plants that will better adapt to local conditions, as well as help to maintain and restore wildlife habitat.” GMS utilized a John Deere 50B Compact Excavator recently purchased from Coastline Equipment to breakout and remove the existing hardscape. A John Deere CT332 Skid Steer Loader was then used to load the 20

concrete into bins for disposal. Their fleet currently includes two additional John Deere 210 Skip Loaders, a John Deere 310G Tractor Loader Backhoe along with two reach lifts and other equipment. “We were using another brand and were in the market for a new skid steer loader. We brought in the industries top three selling skid steer loaders and let our operators work with each of them. All of our operators, without exception, came back with the same answer. They said that the John Deere provided more power, a better lifting capacity and expressed that they felt safer on the slopes or in tough ground conditions with the John Deere,” says Corbin. “Buying the new JD 50D Compact Excavator was a no-brainer. We already had one in our fleet and we simply traded up. The other one performed beautifully for us and there was no question on what company and brand we were going to for a new one. Everyone at Coastline Equipment is simply amazing to work with and you just can’t beat the John Deere line of equipment. Our Coastline representative, Julio Gomez’s services and attention to detail are well above anything we have ever received. Coastline is an amazing company. I don’t have to worry about this part of our business. I call Julio and he takes care of it for me.”

2013 specialty/landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR

GMS is also currently working on another job on the coast where they are setting very large boulders and bringing in plant material from all over the world. This particular project requires GMS to build and install intricate irrigation and mister systems to create the proper humidity for many of the non-native plants that are meant to grow naturally in more of a tropical environment. They also recently reopened their tree division a few years back and they currently very busy on this side of the business, particularly with their more than 100 tree maintenance clients. “We have been focusing heavily on tree work and expect good stead growth over the next several years,” continues Corbin. “We will also continue to concentrate on promoting sustainability with our customers through the use of long living native plants and trees. Landscaping is a year-round concern for us here at GMS. We love what we do and we are in it for the long run.” For more information on GMS please visit www.gmslandscapes.com or call (805) 498-9495 and speak with Sarah Corbin at their Newbury Park headquarters. ValleyCrest’s scope of work on the new football field included synthetic turf, soil cement treatment, drainage, grading and field accessories.

ValleyCrest installed field accessories such as goal posts, nets, wall padding and Track and Field surfacing.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY MEMORIAL STADIUM Description: After serving 82 years as the proud home of the Cal Bears, the historic Memorial Stadium received a much-needed modernization in an effort to live up to Cal’s stellar football program and academics. Paying tribute to its historical glory, Memorial Stadium is now among the most state-of-the-art stadiums for Division 1 teams in the country complete with upgraded seismic retrofits, luxury boxes, better accessibility and the ability to seat 63,000 fans. Scope of Work: ValleyCrest Landscape Development was contracted by long-time customer, Webcor Builders, to provide landscape construction services on both the Game Day field and the surrounding exterior landscape. Scope of work on the new football field included synthetic turf, soil cement treatment, drainage, grading, and field accessories such as goal posts, nets, wall padding and Track and Field surfacing. On the exterior of the stadium, ValleyCrest was responsible for the installation of site and wall drainage, irrigation, landscape planting, site furnishings, tree preservation, and one year of extended maintenance. The crew planted 134 new trees and ensured that they did their part to have 22

99 percent of the soil, concrete and construction debris removed and recycled from the site. The VCLD team self-performed a portion of the work while overseeing the crews of four sub-contractors comprised of 35 crewmembers at its peak. Complex and challenging are fitting words to describe the work performed at Memorial Stadium, being that in just four months this landscape project had to be “game ready” amidst an open university campus and over 400 construction workers from various subs onsite at times. With so much activity, it was imperative that scheduling and deliveries were coordinated with a Doc Master who managed all site logistics. ValleyCrest was proactive and meet with Webcor and Cal representatives on a weekly basis before work began which provided the crew with a running start to the Opening Day finish line. Cc Owner: Regents of the University of California at Berkeley Customer: Webcor Builders Landscape Architect: OLIN Completion Date: June 2012 www.calcontractor.com

The playing field was lowered four feet to improve sight lines for game day visitors and surfaced with Matrix turf, an artificial turf with crumb rubber infill along with a silica pea gravel base to allow improved field drainage.

Located on the southeastern side of campus, the new landscape at Memorial Stadium accommodates everyday functions of the university, while also serving as a forum for games and special events. The ValleyCrest team performed work amid an open campus.

The Lisa and Douglas Goldman Plaza just outside the stadium takes advantage of a 120-foot grade change between the athletic center and the streets below. It was designed and built as an intensive green roof.

It took only one calendar year for the entire construction of this state-of-the-art stadium to come to life. The new plaza replaces a parking lot and creates a diversified landscape for pedestrian use.

Two major staircases and a ramping path lead back to the campus below. On game days, this plaza can accommodate up to 65,000 people.

The exterior landscape at Memorial Stadium is an expansive mix of hardscape and softscape full of trees and contemporary site furnishings installed by ValleyCrest.

A winding walkway makes the most of the grade change between the campus and stadium seamlessly integrating modern amenities within the campus’ historic stadium area.

Glass and stone mark transitions through the plaza, enabling views of the surrounding campus and the city while also creating an intimate environment.

REDUCING COSTLY DELAYS IN MILL AND FILL ROAD REPAIR

Above: A transfer sweeper can fill a 10 cubic yard truck with milling debris in under 15 minutes and is up to three times as fast at sweeping up milling debris and loading it into the truck as skid steers and boxblades.

Deadlines for road mill and fill projects have shortened to minimize public inconvenience but traditional technology to clean road millings has failed to keep pace. “On mill and fill jobs, we often can’t close a lane until 7:00 PM and need it open for traffic by 6:00 AM,” says Jack Shannon, Superintendent at Silver Star Construction. “Late penalties for interstate highway work can be as high as $10,000 an hour, so expediting the milling clean up process-our bottleneck-was vital.” Traditionally, after milling, vehicles such as road sweepers or skid steers with broom attachments remove milled debris from the road surface. However, these vehicles are not engineered to be efficient for this type of use. In an effort to reduce costly stop-and-go road repair, innovative road paving technology is now eliminating the milling cleaning bottleneck, 26

expediting completion, cutting cost, and improving adhesion for a growing number of pro-active road paving contractors. “We found a transfer sweeper can fill a 10 cubic yard truck with milling debris in under 15 minutes,” says Shannon. “It’s up to three times as fast at sweeping up milling debris and loading it into the truck as our previous skid steers and boxblade.” After searching for a faster, more efficient process to clean up milling debris, Shannon turned to an MK-1 Transfer Sweeper by Broce Broom, a Norman, Okla.-based innovator of construction sweeping technology. Unlike typical road sweepers that must travel to dump their milling debris before cleaning again, the transfer sweeper drives behind a dump truck and integrates a large brush that continually sweeps debris to its conveyor, which dumps into the truck bed.

2013 specialty/landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR

According to Shannon, the transfer sweeper can keep up with the milling machine, and the only time it has to stop is to swap out a loaded truck for an empty one. “Since using the transfer sweeper, we typically finish mill and fill jobs early and often pave another 1,500 to 2,000 feet overnight,” says Shannon. “We win incentives for early completion. Compared to our previous cleaning method, we’re able to mill and fill the same mile stretch of highway about two hours faster, while eliminating the cost of two extra operators and pieces of equipment.” The company modified a 14 cubic yard dump truck bed to accept debris, which provided significantly more storage capacity to keep the cleaning process going. MODERN CLASSICS - THE VOLVO L30G AND L35G WHEEL LOADERS The updated L30G and L35G wheel loaders from Volvo Construction Equipment may be compact — making them ideal for tight turns and work in restricted areas — but they possess the versatility and breakout and lifting forces expected from larger machines. And, both models feature powerful, new, fuel-efficient Volvo engines that meet the demanding emissions requirements of Tier 4 Final regulations. The strong, silent types The G-Series’ Volvo Care Cab is an industry leader — and it isn’t hard to see why. The spacious interior offers low levels of noise and vibration for a safer, more comfortable operating experience — which leads to lower fatigue levels and easy operating. Peak performance The G-Series includes an all-new Tier 4 Final / Stage IIIBcompliant Volvo engine (75 hp / 55.4 kW) that’s electronically controlled for better fuel efficiency. With the engine perfectly matched to the drivetrain, the L30G and L35G may be small in stature, but they possess the power necessary to take on heavyduty jobs. The L30G and L35G bucket and linkage systems are strong and durable for efficient loading and lifting. The bucket delivers an excellent rollback angle to ensure material isn’t lost when transporting or lifting. The standard Z-bar linkage is field-tested and proven to offer high breakout force and fast cycle times, as well as excellent parallel movement with the bucket or pallet forks. Breakout force, rim pull and lifting forces work in perfect harmony for maximum productivity. A hydraulic quick coupler integrated into the lift arm makes changing attachments — like forks or buckets — quick and easy. Maintenance should not be time consuming. With easy access to service points — including fuel, oil, air and hydraulic filters, battery, radiator, oil dipstick and hydraulic oil level gauges — maintenance is faster and easier, so less time is spent servicing your machine, and more time can be spent on the job at hand.
