The Campaign for Calvert School

“Education makes life worth living.” -Virgil M. Hillyer

More than a century ago, a young Harvard graduate named Virgil Hillyer helped establish not just a school, but a tradition of innovation. As Calvert’s first Head Master, Hillyer introduced methods of education that defied conventional thinking. He also taught us that great institutions like Calvert must always be bold in looking toward the future. The Building on Strength Campaign for Calvert School, only the third capital campaign in the School’s 117-year history, is the result of today’s audacious thinkers. Aiming to raise $20,000,000 was a daring undertaking, but it was what was required for Calvert to maintain its position as the best elementary and middle school in Baltimore. As they have in the past, members of the Calvert community rose and met this challenge with their extraordinary generosity, raising $20,115,318, the largest fundraising total in the School’s history. This success is a testament to the deep commitment of the Calvert community, which always looks forward and is fearless in its pursuit of the highest standards. This is the “Calvert Way.”

faculty of any school, anywhere. Our excellent and innovative teachers are what have set Calvert apart for more than a century. The Building on Strength Campaign has provided Calvert with the financial resources to achieve our goal of academic excellence for years to come. As a result of the outstanding generosity of the Clapp family—Harvey ’51 and Ann Clapp and David ’81 and Allison Clapp—the Harvey ’51 & Ann Clapp Internship was created to support new teachers. The Clapp Teaching Fellow is a one-year teaching internship that focuses on training beginner teachers in the “Calvert Way.” This robust internship immerses new educators in the life of the School while providing them the opportunity to be mentored by experienced teachers. Gifts from the Building on Strength Campaign have also allowed candidates for open positions, and they ensure that salary and benefits packages are attractive and competitive for all teachers. Campaign gifts have also enhanced our professional learning opportunities by giving us the ability to send more teachers to participate in classes, conferences, seminars, summer curriculum projects, technology education, and overseas travel. Additionally, gifts to the Campaign have funded study grants and allowed teachers to pursue advanced degrees.

Faculty Excellence

Of all the reasons Calvert set out to launch this campaign, none

understood the importance of accessibility. She appreciated her Calvert education so much that she chose to leave a gift to Calvert in her will that was restricted to support Financial Aid. Marian, who passed away in 2012, wanted qualified children, whose families could not otherwise The Marian Trescher Waldhausen ’44 Scholarship honors the life of a woman who loved Calvert, valued education, and wanted to do her part to ensure that future generations could receive the same great education she received as a child. As the demand for Financial Aid resources continues to increase, gifts from the Building on Strength Campaign ensure that Calvert continues to be a diverse and inclusive place of learning that advances our students’ academic, social, and moral development.

Make a Calvert Education More Accessible

The Building on Strength Campaign successfully raised $2,500,000 for Financial Aid. This funding doubles the previous Financial Aid resources provided by the endowment and, as a result, enables us to attract and enroll the best and brightest students, regardless of their financial means. At present, approximately 27% of families receive Financial Aid— more than at any time in the School’s history.

Gifts from the Building on Strength Campaign allowed Calvert to construct a two-story addition to the Lower School dedicated to our Fifth and Sixth Age students. The Nancy A. Hopkins Wing and her children, Melissa Hopkins Smith ’89 and Holt Hopkins, is named in honor of Calvert’s beloved Pilot Class teacher of 21 years, Mrs. Nancy Hopkins. This gorgeous building added spacious classrooms, a multipurpose room for group activities, and faculty workrooms to the Lower School. This vital addition provides our teachers with the tools they need to teach at the highest level and gives our students the state-of-the-art facilities they require to learn and grow. The rest of our Lower School building also received a facelift, including classroom restorations, technological enhancements, a new playground, and central air conditioning. Further, the Admissions Suite, given by the FranceMerrick Foundation, was relocated from the terrace level of the Lower School building to the Luetkemeyer Wing, and is now well-positioned to help recruit the newest members of the Calvert family. The W. P. Carey Foundation led the way, as they have in the past, challenging the Calvert community with a $3,500,000 matching gift in honor of Calvert alumnus and friend, the late Bill Carey ’42. Bill was a steadfast supporter of Calvert School throughout his life, and he always said that “Calvert was the best school I ever attended.” The W. P. Carey Foundation chose to honor Bill’s memory by making the largest gift in the School’s history. Not only did this gift honor the legacy of a man who loved Calvert deeply, but it encouraged others to make their best gift to the School with its inspiring match. The Carey Challenge was instrumental in helping to complete the Building on Strength Campaign and realize the $20,000,000 goal. In recognition and appreciation of the Foundation’s extraordinary generosity, the Lower School will be named W. P. Carey ’42 Hall. These critical improvements to our Lower School facilities are important for many reasons. Most of all, they guarantee that our students and teachers have what they need today and are prepared for what is coming tomorrow.

Expand and Improve the Lower School

Over the last decade, Calvert’s enrollment has increased by over 70%, filling our 1924 Lower School building to capacity. Space was at a premium, for both students and teachers, when the Campaign commenced.

for important events and activities.

Give the Middle School a Place to Gather

The construction of the Francis J. Carey ’38 Hall Middle School building in 2002 allowed us to expand the Calvert experience to serve students through Eighth Grade. More than a decade later, the thriving Middle School was in need of a gathering space that could accommodate the entire division. As a result of the outstanding generosity of the Luetkemeyer Family, the new 250-seat Anne McLanahan Luetkemeyer ’27 Assembly Hall was constructed and opened in April 2013. This stunning new space provides our students with the ideal environment for public speaking and gathering. It is used daily for Eighth Grade Reflections speeches, Castalia presentations, dramatic performances, fine arts activities, parent speakers, bi-weekly assemblies, and much more. The Anne McLananhan Luetkemeyer ’27 Assembly Hall truly enhances the spirit of community

Through the Building on Strength Campaign, the Annual Fund grew from $750,000 in 2011-2012 to $1,000,000 in 2013-2014 and now represents 6.8% of the operating budget. This tremendous increase ensures that Calvert will not need to run capital campaigns every few years, while also helping to mitigate future tuition increases without compromising the quality of a Calvert education. More than 2,100 alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends supported the Annual Fund during the Building on Strength Campaign.* This exceptional showing of support is truly appreciated by everyone at Calvert.

*Donors to the Annual Fund were recognized in the Annual Report of Giving.

Build the Annual Fund

While capital expenditures and a robust endowment are essential to maintaining a tradition of high standards at Calvert, we also set out to increase the Annual Fund to help offset the costs not met by tuition and to balance our operating budget. The lifeblood of the School, the Annual Fund is Calvert’s largest source of unrestricted operating support and gives us flexibility to meet new challenges as they arise. The Annual Fund impacts everything that makes a Calvert education special and makes a profound difference in the daily lives of our students.

helping Calvert complete the Building on Strength Campaign for Calvert School and surpass our $20 million goal. In particular, I would like to thank our two campaign Chairs, Bart Harvey ’61 and Sana Naylor Brooks ’79, whose tireless efforts, from the first day to the very last, made our success possible. I would also like to thank our many parent, alumni, and grandparent volunteers who provided hours of support to Calvert and our Development Office. The combined efforts of our Campaign team and our extraordinarily generous contributors will impact Calvert students and faculty for generations to come. From the beautiful new campus spaces such as the Hopkins Wing and the Luetkemeyer Assembly

Of course, more extraordinary than the amount raised is that it was raised by an elementary/middle school. As proud as we are of our pre-secondary model, we know that high schools and colleges often come first in the hearts and minds of their alumni and families. However, and as with so many other aspects of Calvert, we are unique in the level of commitment that our community has to this school. Our alumni and our families recognize that a Calvert education transcends the ten-year journey here and sustains them through a lifetime of purposeful learning. It is this recognition that imbues our community with a strong sense of loyalty, commitment, and hope that other children – our sons and daughters, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors – will all have an opportunity to learn and grow in the ‘Calvert Way’. It is this hope that has led us to today, and it is this

Letter from the Co-Chairs We are thrilled to celebrate the individuals and foundations that helped us complete the Building on Strength Campaign for Calvert School. Those listed in this report truly gave of their time, talent, and resources, and for that we are incredibly grateful. The purpose and dedication exhibited by so many made this Campaign the most successful fundraising effort in Calvert’s history, raising over $20 million and exceeding our financial goal.

Our success would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of several individuals and families. The W. P. Carey Foundation, led by the family of the late Bill Carey ’42, inspired us once again with their $3,500,000 matching gift that challenged the community to raise their own $3,500,000. The Luetkemeyer and Clapp families demonstrated their steadfast commitment with their outstanding leadership gifts, as did the late Bill Gardner, Jr. ’43, who reminded us with his legacy gift that love for Calvert runs deep for many of us. We truly appreciate the remarkable generosity of these alumni who led the way in this Campaign.

While we are delighted by the financial success of this Campaign, our mission has always been about more than dollars and cents. It has been about making our school more effective. It has been about the students and the teachers, and preserving and enhancing the essence of a Calvert education. As a community, we set out to do our part to position Calvert for the future. We sought to honor our steadfast traditions while seeking innovative enhancements. Together, we have provided for a transformational impact on the lives of the students, faculty, and the community, and we will now work to realize our vision for Calvert’s future.

We would also like to recognize and thank the dedicated campaign volunteers and the Development Office, who gave unwaveringly of their time and talent. Calvert is fortunate to have such loyal and dedicated friends who work tirelessly for the good of the School. We thank you one and all! Finally, we would like to give a heartfelt thanks to all of you who gave to this campaign. We assure you that your gift has been wisely invested in Calvert. Your commitment will ensure that Calvert School continues to be the best elementary and middle school in Baltimore. Thank you for your loyalty and generosity.
