i no fuera por la ausencia del Pireo creeríamos estar contemplando la Acrópolis desde Calton Hill. Ese pedazo de Atenas en Edimburgo es el Castillo. Una fortaleza normanda que se eleva sobre el centro histórico de la capital escocesa y que regala entre sus almenas una panorámica de la ciudad. Encaramados en algunas de sus torres adivinamos una urbe construida sobre un risco en la que resalta la arquitectura medieval y georgiana de sus edificios. Uno tras otro flanquean unas cuadras con nombres solemnes y de otro tiempo, Royal Mile, Princess Street y Grassmarket, que suben y bajan por un entramado urbano que esconde callejones oscuros de piedra que hacen las veces de atajos. Edimburgo parece aferrada a la época de los tartanes estampados de hilos de colores de los clanes históricos. Nada que ver con los kilts del escaparate de la tienda 21st Century Kilts que diseña Howie, el chico malo de las telas tradicionales escocesas. El mismo tipo que lleva casi dos décadas sin ponerse un bluyín.

Con faldas y a lo loco toca dejar atrás Edimburgo. Es hora de atravesar escenarios de batallas memorables, de visitar aristocráticas residencias, de tratar de ver al monstruo del lago Ness y de cruzar paisajes huérfanos de vegetación. Hitos que se alternan en las Tierras Altas Occidentales y en la isla de Skye.

Otherwise from the absence of Piraeus, we would believe that we are looking at the Acropolis from Calton Hill. That piece of Athens in Edinburg is the castle. A Norman fortress that raises over the historical center of the Scottish capital which offers a panoramic view of the city. Perched in some of its towers, we can see a city constructed over a cliff in which Medieval and Georgina architecture outstands on its buildings. Some blocks with solemn names from other time, like Royal Mile, Princess Street, and Grassmarket flank one behind the other, they come up and down by an urban lattice which hides dark, stone alleys that work as shortcuts. Edinburg seems to be attached to the age of the tartans stamped on colored strings from the historical tribes. It has nothing to do with the kilts from the showcase window of the 21st Century Kilts store designed by Howie, the bad guy of the traditional Scottish fabrics. The same guy who hasn’t worn a pair of blue jeans for almost two decades.

It’s time to leave Edinburg with all craziness and skirts. It’s time to cross the sceneries of memorable battles, and to visit aristocratic residences, to try to see Loch’s Ness monster, and to try to cross zones without vegetation. Landmarks that disrupt at the High Occidental Lands and in the Skye Island.

Without too much time to get used to the idea of moving ahead to the right, the town of Stirling and its castle crosses on our way. A famous site for the battle having the same name that the town and which took place in 1297 having as avant-garde the “Guardian of Scotland”, William Wallace, who led an uprising against the British ruling. After this historical lesson with subtle warlike and heroic touch we go back to the highway.

Subsequently, at Callander’s level, some furry cows welcome us to the Highlands. These tamed animals awake so much curiosity among tourists, that they park at the ditch to take photos like in an African Safari. The cows just limit themselves to graze and remain quiet with their sight toward the front. In that same direction is located the Glencoe valley. A dramatic landscape guarded by munros (mountains of more than 914 meters height) that formed centuries ago by glaciers and volcanic eruptions. We will drive and stop every few kilometers to admire this lunar landscape until we arrive to Fort William, locations in which it is suggested to rest and lunch. More than three hours have passed since we get out from Edinburg and there is still a long way to our final destination of this journey, Sligachan.

Sin apenas tiempo para hacernos la idea de que por aquí se adelanta por la derecha, se cruza en nuestro camino el medieval pueblo de Stirling y su castillo. Un afamado sitio por la contienda del mismo nombre que se libró en 1297 y que tuvo en vanguardia al “Guardián de Escocia”, William Wallace, quien lideró un levantamiento contra el yugo inglés. Tras esta lección de historia con posos bélicos y tintes heroicos regresamos a la carretera.

Más adelante, a la altura de Callander, unas peludas vacas nos dan la bienvenida a las Highlands. Estos mansos animales despiertan tanta curiosidad entre los turistas que los hay que parquean en la cuneta, se apean del carro y les toman fotos como en un safari africano. Las poses vacunas se reducen a pastar y estarse quietas con la mirada al frente. En esa misma dirección se encuentra el valle de Glencoe. Un dramático paraje custodiado por munros (montañas de más de 914 metros de altura) que se forjó siglos atrás por glaciares de hielo y erupciones volcánicas. Manejar y parar cada pocos kilómetros para contemplar este entorno lunar es lo que haremos hasta llegar a Fort William, localidad en la que es recomendable repostar y almorzar. Han pasado algo más de tres horas desde que saliéramos de Edimburgo y todavía queda un largo camino hasta el destino final de esta jornada, Sligachan.

Mientras digerimos el haggis, plato nacional, especiado, jugoso y suculento (combina carne con gachas de avena, cebolla, sal y especias), toca buscar un buen mirador. Entre las 15:00h y las 15:15h cruza el viaducto Glenfinnan el tren de vapor Jacobite Express, el mismo que aparece en la película de Harry Potter con destino a la Escuela de Magia Hogwarts. No muy lejos de aquí se encuentra otro escenario cinematográfico, el Castillo Eilan Donan, propiedad del clan MacRae. Esta construcción icónica del país aparece en películas como El mundo nunca es suficiente de James Bond, Elizabeth y Highlander. Está erigido sobre una isla a la que se accede cruzando un estrecho y alargado puente de piedra. Muy cerca hace acto de presencia un puente más grande, pero menos pintoresco, que une Kyle of Lochalsh con la isla de Skye. Sligachan es una buena localidad para hacer noche y comenzar un nuevo día en este sitio insular de gran interés geológico.

Between 3:00 and 3:15 the steam locomotive Jacobite Express crosses the Glenfinnan Bridge, this is the same locomotive appearing in Harry Potter when riding to Hogwarts Magic School. Not faraway from here there’s another cinematographic scenery, Eilan Donan Castle, property of the MacRae clan. This iconic construction of the country appears in movies like World Is Not Enough of James Bond, Elizabeth, and Highlander. It raises on an island in which you may access crossing a large and narrow stone bridge. Close to here, another larger bridge appears, but less colorful, it connects Kyle of Lochalsh with the island of Skye. Sligachan is a nice site to stay over and begin a new day in this island location of great geological interest.

natas que se pueden realizar. Al norte de la isla, a la altura de Uig, es interesante de ver las formaciones montañosas de Fary Glein o el corrimiento de tierra Quiraing en la cordillera Trotternish. Hacia el occidente de la isla se puede echar un vistazo al Castillo de Dunvegan, para luego seguir el trayecto hasta el faro de Neist Point. Aquí el verde de la tierra lo riegan unas olas que saltan por encima del mar y rompen contra los acantilados. El ganado que hay esparcido por las laderas ni se inmuta ante semejante espectáculo de violencia y belleza.

De Skye no debemos salir sin degustar la pesca del día en alguno de los restaurantes del coqueto pueblo de Portree. Decimos coqueto por no repetir adjetivo, por aquí todas las localidades son adorables. Como es el caso de Plockton (fuera de la isla de Skye), que es una joya, un secreto de las Tierras Altas a orillas del lago Carron. No hacer nada más que disfrutar del ambiente del lugar vale la pena. Por la noche la velada es una maravilla en cualquiera de sus restaurantes junto a la playa. at the level of Uig, it’s interesting to look at the mountainous formations of Fary Glein or the slipping of the land in Quiraing, in the Trotternish mountain chain. Toward the occident of the island, the Dunvegan Castle an be seen, and then continue our journey to the Neist Point lighthouse. The green of the land is watered by waves that splash over the ocean and break against the cliffs. The spread cattle through the hillsides don’t even care about this violent and beautiful spectacle.

We should not leave Skye without tasting the fishing of the day in any of the charming restaurants of the town of Portree. We must say charming to avoid repeating an adjective, but around here all the sites are adorable.

Like in the case of Plockton (outside the island of Skye), which is a jewel, a secret of the High Lands at the shores of Carron Lake. Doing nothing but to enjoy the environment of this place is worthily. Vela By the night, the evening is a wonder in any of its restaurants by the beach.

Ness y su monstruo. La morada de esta criatura tan ficticia como rentable se extiende en paralelo a la carretera que termina en Inverness. La gran ciudad de las Tierras Altas. A pesar del whisky que se elabora en las destilerías que circundan la zona, como la de Tomatin, la calma impera en este rincón de Escocia de alta gradación.

En dirección sur, saliendo de las Highlands, la autopista enfila hacia Pitlochry. Otro pueblo más sacado de un cuento de hadas en el que prima la arquitectura victoriana. Normal que sea uno de los lugares de vacaciones favorito de los ingleses.

Nosotros, que no somos de aquí, pero que nos hemos acercado un poquito más a los escoces, queremos decir adiós a Edimburgo.

Decíamos al principio que la capital de Escocia tiene algo de Atenas, pero que le falta el Pireo.

Nos equivocamos, Edimburgo tiene el Puerto de Leith. El muelle del que salen las historias (como Trainspotting, de Irvine Welsh) que se convierten en cantos de sirena y atraen a Ulises del siglo XXI a esta ciudad en la que su gente siempre tiene un minuto de más para indicar en el mapa al forastero donde se encuentra. There’s no journey without cliché and the one of Scotland is the Loch Ness monster. The home of this creature as fictional as profitable, extends parallel to the highway that ends at Inverness. The great city of the High Lands. In spite of the whiskey elaborated in the surrounding distilleries of the area, like the Tomatin, calmness masters in this corner of Scotland.

At south direction, leaving the Highlands, the highway leads toward Pitlochry. Another town taken from a fairy tale ruled by Victorian architecture. It is one of the favorite touristic places of English people. We, who don’t belong in here, but that we have approached a little more to the Scottish, want to say goodbye to Edinburg.

We said at the beginning that the capital of Scotland has something from Athens, but is missing the Piraeus. We mistaken, Edinburg has the Leith Port. The pier from which stories arise (like Trainspottng, of Irvine Welsh) and turn into songs of mermaids and attract Ulises from the twenty-first century to this city in which its people always have one more minute to show to the foreigners where it is located on the map.
