l pasado minero de Røros goza de una gran reputación, sin embargo, antes de que la extracción del cobre comenzara, los nativos Sami, un puñado de cazadores y los lobos ya merodeaban por este lugar. En la actualidad, los 5,500 habitantes de este pueblo de montaña, 500 kilómetros al norte de Oslo, situado en una región apartada sobre una meseta inclinada a 628 metros por encima del nivel del mar, hacen frente a un clima severo. En 2010 vieron congelarse el termómetro a -42°C (en 1914 descendió hasta los -50.4°C). Con estas temperaturas el forastero entiende que los vecinos más que andar se deslicen sobre el popular spark (un trineo, tan divertido como peligroso para el visitante, que funciona como un patinete) para ir y venir de sus quehaceres diarios. Más seguro y confortable es subirse al trineo tirado por caballos que dirige el marido de Marianne. Esta mujerona, envuelta en un majestuoso abrigo de piel de lobo, que justifica diciendo que “tiene más de cien años, pero que conste que estoy en contra de la muerte de animales para la confección de prendas”, es una estupenda anfitriona y narradora de historias para entender el devenir de Røros. Cuenta que, antes, el trineo se usaba para transportar comida ya que era un medio de transporte muy práctico. The mining history of Røros enjoys a great reputation. However, before the extraction of copper began, the natives Sami, a bunch of hunters, and the wolves already wandered around this place.

Nowadays the 5,500 inhabitants of this mountain village, 500 kilometers north of Oslo, located in a faraway region on a tilted plateau at 628 meters above sea level, face a harsh climate. In 2010 they saw the thermometer froze at -42ºC (in 1914 it fell off at -50.4ºC). Having this temperature, the outsider understands that neighbors more than strolling, they slide on the popular spark (a sled that works as a skateboard, as fun as it is dangerous for visitors) to come and go from their daily chores. It is more reliable and comfortable to move around in a sledge pulled by horses which is led by Marianne’s husband. This woman, wrapped in a majestic wolf fur coat, which excuses saying that “it is more than a hundred years old, but it should be noted that I’m against killing animals for their fur”, is a great hostess and narrator of stories to understand Røros’ past. She says that a long time ago, the sled was used to carry food since it was a very practical means of transportation. This polar vehicle changed its load of supplies for tourists at the middle of the 20th century, when the first brave tourists dared to come here. The couple feed the sturdy horses with the money they earn from touring around town.

Decíamos al principio que, antes de que Røros se enriqueciera con las explotaciones de filones de cobre en las minas de Olavsgruva y Storwartz (a partir de 1644), comunidades Sami, cazadores y manadas de lobos habitaban por estas latitudes.

Una buena manera para visualizar cómo vivían o sobrevivían aquellos primeros moradores es visitando la periférica granja de Røros Rein. En este centro, en forma de cabaña tradicional (gåetie), explican las costumbres de los nativos Sami y su vínculo con los renos. Un ciervo septentrional con astas muy ramosas y de pelaje espeso, provee alimento y material con el que confeccionar ropas.

De este animal se aprovecha todo: carne, piel y huesos, además de emplearlo para que tire de los trineos. Menos cálida y acogedora resulta la experiencia de subirse a un trineo tirado por una ristra de perros de la raza Husky y contemplar la mística e intensa luz que desprende la hora azul. El olor de los canes es intenso, el frío hace estremecerse el tuétano y el ánimo se debilita. Es el precio por contemplar el crepúsculo deslizándose unos pocos centímetros por encima de la nieve.

As we said, before Røros was enriched with the mining of flecks of copper in the mines of Olavsgruva and Storwartz (dating from 1644), communities of Sami, hunters, and packs of wolves inhabited these latitudes. A good way to visualize how those first dwellers lived or survived, is by visiting the circumferential farm of Røros Rein. In this place, with shape of a traditional cabin (gåetie), they explain the customs of the natives Sami and their link with reindeers. A northern deer with branched antlers and thicky fur provides with food and material to tailor clothes. This animal is fully exploited: meat, skin and bones, besides using it to pull sleds. The experience of riding a sled pulled by a string of Husky dogs and observe the mystique, intense light released from the blue hour turns to be less warm and cozy. The smell of the dogs is intense, the coldness makes you shiver down to the marrow and the spirit weakens. It is the price we pay for admiring the dusk slipping a few centimeters over the snow.

The nature surrounding Røros is untamed and the design and planning govern the urban fabric of the town. The mining company of that reddish brown metal constructed and founded a site working and functioning around its needs. aquel metal color pardo rojizo construyó y fundó un sitio en torno a él y en función a sus necesidades. El pueblo comenzó a desarrollarse por medio del trabajo entrelazado de la comunidad minera y agrícola, perfectamente ideado y dirigido por el máximo responsable de la explotación. El objetivo no era otro que crear una red de suministros alimenticios y textiles para abastecer y cubrir los requerimientos de la población minera. Desde aquel 1644, cuando se abrió la primera mina de cobre, y hasta 1977 Røros vivió por y para la minería, aunque sin ser consciente también dio los primeros pasos para convertirse en la actual capital de la comida local de Noruega. El mandamás de la compañía tuvo claro que lo mejor era tener a sus trabajadores cerca y agrupados, así que les proveyó de un terreno, entre las dos cuadras principales del pueblo (Bergmannsgata y Kjerkgata), en el que construyeron sus casas y granjas.

El jefe y los altos cargos se instalaron en Bergmannsgata. Ésta es la arteria que vertebra el pueblo y en la que se suceden viviendas que ostentan elementos de la arquitectura clásica, tanto romana como griega. Los propietarios de estas estrambóticas viviendas no dudaron en copiar lo que vieron en sus viajes por Roma y Grecia. Si se observa con atención, se aprecia que sólo las fachadas están pintadas de colores. En la parte trasera y en los laterales no se esmeraron tanto.

sponsible of the exploitation. The only objective was to create a network of food and textile supplies to power and meet the requirements of the mining population. Since 1644, when the first copper mine was opened, and until 1977, Røros devoted itself to mining issues, although without being conscious, it also turned to be the current capital of local cuisine of Norway. The top dog of the company had it clear that the best thing was to have his workers together and close to him, so he gave them a land, between the two main blocks of the town (Bergmannsgata and Kjerkgata), in which they constructed their houses and farms.

The manager and senior positions of the mining company were installed in Bergmannsgata.

This is the main artery that runs the town and in which there are houses that hold elements of classic Roman and Greek architecture. The owners of these bizarre houses undoubtedly imitated what they saw during their journeys through Rome and Greece. When observing keenly, it can be appreciated that only the facades are painted in colors. They didn’t take great care on the back part and on the sides.

Kjerkgata runs parallel to this block. The church’s construction, pride of the mining town, matched the golden age of mining of copper (1784). Its tower raises over the colored wooden houses and shows an emblem that blends tools

En paralelo discurre Kjerkgata. En esta cuadra se erigió, coincidiendo con la edad de oro de la extracción de cobre (1784), la iglesia, “el orgullo del pueblo minero”. Su torre se eleva sobre las casas de madera de colores y luce un escudo que combina herramientas con un símbolo de la fertilidad.

El templo se levantó en honor a Dios y para lustrar Røros, además de ser otra muestra de la estructura jerárquica del lugar. El aforo que tiene es para 1,600 personas, fieles que en aquellos tiempos estaban obligados a acudir a los cultos religiosos de cuatro horas de duración. En el interior se constata la supremacía que ejercía el máximo dirigente de la explotación minera respecto al resto de la comunidad. Su asiento estaba siete centímetros por encima del púlpito del propio párroco, los vecinos más pobres accedían a la iglesia por una puerta lateral y se ubicaban en la planta superior, fuera del foco de visión de la gente pudiente que ocupaba la parte baja, el patio de butacas del edificio. El control de la población en Røros era absoluto por parte del jefe supremo de la compañía explotadora de minerales. En invierno, los jueves era el día que se les daba un respiro y, en verano, los viernes. with a symbol or fertility. The temple was constructed to honor God and to polish Røros, besides being another symbol of the hierarchic structure of the place. It has a capacity for 1,600 people, the faithful that omce were forced to attend religious ceremonies lasting up to four hours. In the interior there’s proof of the supremacy perpetrated by the manager of the mining company in regard to the rest of the community. His seat was seven centimeters above the pulpit of the priest itself, the poorest neighbors entered to the church by a door on a sidewall and located themselves at the upper part, away from the sight of affluent people which were situated in the ground floor, the seats’ courtyard of the building. The manager of the mining company had absolute control over Røros’ population. During the winter, Thursdays were the days assigned for resting; in summer, it was the Fridays.

Taking advantage of the existing slope, it is not a bad idea to slide from the church to Berkel & Bar, part of the Vertshuset Røros hotel, the appropriate place to try native gastronomy: game meat, salmon, codfish, herring, arising from crystal clear waters, dairy products, vegetables and orchard products from farmhouses around town.

There’s beer for drinking, which is elaborated by the owner of all this open shed, the enthusiastic Stein Kverneng.

Today, the village has 5,500 inhabitants. arenque, procedentes de aguas claras y cristalinas, productos lácteos, vegetales y hortalizas de las granjas que salpican el pueblo. Para tomar hay cerveza que elabora el propietario de todo este tinglado, el entusiasta Stein Kverneng.

La remota localización de Røros, fronteriza con Suecia, no le salvó de que el ejército sueco en 1679 le destruyera en gran parte. La posterior reconstrucción rescató dos mil casas de madera con fachadas que ostentan troncos embreados que hacen que el pueblo adopte ese porte de ciudad medieval tan cálido y agradable. En 1980, Røros, así como una serie de paisajes culturales y de carácter industrial y rural, denominada La Circunferencia, se sumaron a la lista de Patrimonio Mundial de la Unesco.

Pero que su estampa bucólica actual no le lleve a engaño. Hubo un tiempo en que Røros fue salvaje, indómita, en la que apenas se oía el aullido de los lobos. Un pequeño asentamiento minero que forjó su urbanismo y el carácter de sus moradores a base del cobre que extrajeron de sus minas hace más de trescientos años.

The remote location of Røros, bordering Sweden, didn’t prevent the Swedish army in 1679 from destroying a large portion of Røros. Its later reconstruction recovered two thousand wooden houses with facades made of tarred trunks that makes the town to adopt that warm and pleasant medieval appearance. In 1980 Røros, as well as a series of cultural, industrial, and rural landscapes so-called The Circumfrence, they were added to the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage.

But don’t let its bucolic scene lead you to deceit. There was a time when Røros was wild, untamed, and the howl of wolves was the only sound heard. A small mining settlement forged its urbanism and the character of its inhabitants, due to the copper extractions from the mines more than three hundred years ago.
