ARABIC
Mansour Salsabili | Ph.D., Middle East Studies Approximately 422 million people worldwide—both Muslim and Christian—speak Arabic, which includes three varieties: Classical Arabic (the language of the Islamic religion), Standard Arabic (official language, news, documents, etc.), and colloquial Arabic (different dialects) . Spoken both in the Arabian world and in several Asian and African countries, Arabic was adopted as one of the six official languages of the United Nations in 1973 . Events in the Middle East have encouraged new interest in Arabic .

Although Latin is rarely taught nowadays, it remained the language of international communication in Europe well into the 18th century . Latin gives access not only to Classical texts, but also to more than 1000 years of texts written in Europe and North Africa since the fall of the Roman Empire . In this class, students will work on developing a core Latin vocabulary and understanding the basics of Latin grammar, with a focus on Latin’s linguistic connections to English .
