STAND UP COMEDY WRITING AND PERFORMANCE

Joshua Filipowski | Comedy Instructor Have you ever thought about trying stand-up comedy? Or do you want to take your stand-up and comedy writing to the next level? This workshop will help you find your inner comedic voice, whittle down to find the funny, or punch-up what already is. Students will also be given several opportunities outside of class to perform .

SKETCH COMEDY: CREATING AND PERFORMING YOUR OWN REVUE!

Alexa Albenese Sketch comedy allows an artist to create wacky characters, draw from personal experiences, and hold a mirror to society in 60 minutes . Students will makeup both the cast and writer’s room for a completely original, completely virtual, sketch comedy revue . This class will learn the foundations of writing, formatting, and editing sketches, as well as the structure of a revue . There will also be brainstorming sessions and improvisational games to generate a collaborative, fun-filled environment.

EXPLORING VOICEOVERS WORKSHOP

Nancy Halpin | Voice Talent & V.O. Producer Have you been told you have a great speaking voice? Have you wondered how to monetize it working in voice-over, but don’t know how to begin? Join us to learn essential strategies for pursuing the craft of voice over . You’ll get candid, insider tips on working as a VO actor . We’ll discuss VO acting techniques, making great VO demos, home studios with marketing strategies . You’ll have an opportunity to perform a commercial and get professional feedback in a nurturing, fun, no-pressure environment . You’ll leave the workshop with an action-oriented game plan!

ACTORS AND THE METHOD: LEVEL 1

Parisa Bayenat | Theater Artist In the class, we will explore the fundamentals of acting, followed by an introduction of the methods of Stanislavski, Chekov, Lee Strasberg, and the Meisner technique . Students will be assigned a monologue to work on, using the methods learned in class, and prepare a final Zoom video piece of their performance. You will receive feedback from the instructor and from students in the class . You will learn about character development by accessing the various acting methods and techniques taught in this class . In addition, you will have a final videotaped performance as the material used for auditioning .

Dewayne Nelson | Actor on Stage, Film & TV We all have a unique story inside us and this is your opportunity to tell yours! MUSIC AMERICANA: AARON COPLAND AND LEONARD BERNSTEIN

Ryan Noe | Northeastern University, Adjunct Professor of High Brass Within the 20th century two composers helped to define a truly “American” sound in classical music. In this course we will discuss how Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein shaped classical music in America. From “Appalachian Spring” to the infamous “Lenny Hop” these two put America on the classical music world map .

THE ERA OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Maria Felicita Fichera | Musicologist Widely regarded as the greatest composer who ever lived, Ludwig van Beethoven dominates a period of musical history as no one else before or since . In this class we will discuss how he redefined the ideals of the French Revolution with its passionate concern for the freedom and dignity of the individual and how he revealed more vividly than any of his predecessors the power of music to convey a philosophy of life .

LISTENING TO BRUCKNER AND MAHLER

Michael Frank | Ph.D. Cornell University Anton Bruckner and Gustav Mahler are often placed alongside each other in discussions of the development of the symphony . But, other than the fact that they both wrote symphonies on a previously unheard-of Gargantuan scale there are few similarities between them . This course will focus on three symphonies by each composer—Bruckner’s 4th, 8th, and 9th and Mahler’s 1st, 3rd, and 9th—noting the important differences between them and placing them in the context of earlier symphonies by Beethoven and later compositions by Schoenberg . The emphasis will always be on carefully listening to and learning the music itself, and not on background information or music history .

THE EXOTIC & THE EROTIC: SEEING, HEARING, AND UNDERSTANDING DIAGHILEV’S BALLET RUSSES

Matthew Heck | Instructor We will explore the Parisian Ballet company, the Ballet russes, considering the Russian roots of its founding impresario, Sergei Diaghilev, as well as the mythologized and exoticized images and sounds of Russia that he sold to the West . We’ll address Diaghilev’s prestigious collaborators (Kandinsky, Braque, Benois, Picasso, Matisse, Chanel) and choreographers (Fokine, Nijinsky, Nijinska, Balanchine), but we will focus on the music, examining works by Stravinsky, Debussy, Milhaud, and Satie .
