Cooper River Cyclo-cross/CRCX Race October 3, 9 AM - 3:30 PM Cooper River Cyclo-cross/CRCX is a form of bicycle racing that takes place mostly on grass with lots of turns and obstacles that force riders to dismount, carry their bikes over barriers and up stairs, and then remount as quickly as possible. There are a full range of categories including beginners, masters and professionals for both men and women. A USA Cycling license is required to participate. Races are 30-60 minutes long, with multiple laps on a 1.6-mile course. The course is completely viewable from Park Boulevard and is great for spectators. Local vendors, including food trucks, will supply food and refreshment. A kid’s race will take place around 12:30, so bring the whole family. This is a rain or shine event. The Stewards of Open Space in Camden County is a volunteer program formed in 2010 to assist the county in its efforts to keep lands purchased through the county Open Space Preservation Trust Fund free of litter and illegally dumped waste. To date, more than 200 volunteers have signed up, helping to remove more than 50 tons of litter and debris from these lands. Forest Ecology Walk Monday, July 13, 6 PM Timber Creek Park The 60-acre park is located along the upper, tidal portion of the North Branch of the Big Timber Creek. The creek flows through a wide valley in this area and contains a mature hardwoods forest with large oaks, American beech and tulip poplar trees and tidal and forested wetlands. Take a walk with Camden County’s Environmental Educator through this county park. Summer Wildflowers Walk Monday, July 20, 6 PM Environmental Center Camden County’s Environmental Educator will lead a walk along Cooper River to learn about and how to identify the summer wildflowers.
Moonlit Walks Meet under the full moon at the Camden County Environmental Center for a gentle walk through the park. Search for signs of nocturnal wildlife and gaze at the stars while Camden County’s Environmental Educator shares points of interest and seasonal highlights. Full Thunder Moon Walk Wednesday, July 1, 8 PM Environmental Center Full Harvest Moon Sunday, September 27, 7 PM Environmental Center Cooper River Walk June 6, 10 AM Please join South Jersey Land and Water Trust staff member Michael Hogan for a guided tour of the upper Cooper River, where multiple, adjacent Camden County Parks form a 350 acre greenway. We will meet at and have a tour of the Camden County Parks Environmental Center. The center is a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building that features a green roof, a rainwater collection tank and rain garden. We will walk the trails along Cooper River, around Evans Pond and the 80 acre Croft Farm. There are a large variety of native and non-native plants along the river and the area is a good birding location. Michael will identify the area’s flora and fauna and discuss SJLWT projects in and around Camden County. The trail may be muddy. Please wear appropriate footwear. Bring your camera and binoculars. WAlks and WORKSHOPS Build a Rain Barrel Workshop June 27, 10 AM Environmental Center Participants will build their own rain barrels and learn how to install them at home.* A rain barrel is placed under a downspout to collect rainwater from the roof. Each rain barrel holds approximately 50 gallons of water, which can be used to water gardens, saving you money on your water bill. Rain barrels can help prevent basement flooding and reduce flooding to local streams and rivers. The fee for this workshop is $45 and includes all materials. Tools will be supplied. Registration deadline is June 24. Challenge Grove Park & Special Needs Programming The beautiful Challenge Grove Park is home to a variety of amenities, all fully accessible, to serve Camden County residents. It features Jake’s Place Playground, walking & bike paths, picnic areas, a pavilion, a basketball court, a softball field and more. Check out Boundless Field, a baseball field that provides an opportunity for children with disabilities to play baseball and other organized sports on a playing surface that can accommodate their special needs. The Challenger League of Cherry Hill and Camden County Miracle League both play baseball on the new specially designed field. There are many more activities planned this year for our residents with special needs: nature walks held in the county parks system, arts and crafts classes, dances, special camps, adaptive rowing clinics, therapeutic horseback riding lessons, exercise classes, golf lessons, dance lessons, performing arts choir, special needs bike clinics, and much more. The Well-Mannered Dog is a one-hour class that introduces dog owners to canine training methods, suggests tips to make training fun and easy, and covers the importance of why good manners matter. AWA’s knowledgeable and friendly instructors believe that every interaction you have with your dog teaches him something. All training is positive and reward-based. The WellMannered Dog class is a great way to bond with your dog and get a leg up on helping your dog become a very polite pooch. Information on the Well-Mannered Dog class and how to register for one of the sessions (space is limited to 10 human-dog pairs) can be found on AWANJ.org. All dogs must be old than six months, well-socialized, in good health and up-to-date on vaccinations.
