Ihr fragt Euch sicher alle, worum es in diesem Heft geht.

Dies ist ein Heft für ewige Spielkinder, die nicht versuchen, zu verstehen, worum es in diesem Heft geht, was das „Konzept“ dahinter ist, welche Zielgruppe das Heft hat und warum der Humor so himmelschreiend schlecht sind. Sondern die es einfach geniessen, einzutauchen und die Gedanken schweifen zu lassen.

Na ja, und wer Freude an den 1980er Jahren hat, wird sicher auf seine Kosten kommen. Wir sind ja alle in dieser Zeit aufgewachsen und fanden es spannend, von verschiedenen Leuten zu erfahren, was sie aus dieser Zeit mitgenommen haben und wie es bis heute nachwirkt.

Mit diesen Nachwirkungen beschäftigen sich dann vermehrt die Beiträge in der Kategorie „Ghosts“.

Leider gibt es keine Beiträge, die sich mit dem dritten von uns angeregten Thema, den „Busters“, auseinandersetzen. Dabei ist für uns das „Busting“ eine wichtige Angelegenheit, hinterfragen, auseinandersprengen, zerplatzen macht einfach Spass!

Wenigstens haben wir ein Interview mit einem Spezialisten für das „Busting“ geführt und dabei natürlich auch gleich selbst versucht, ihn zu „busten“. Ob wir Erfolg hatten? Findet es selber heraus!

Ach so, und das Thema der Architektur? Ahahahah, hätten wir fast ganz vergessen! Aber Architektur und auch die Stadt kommen immer wieder versteckt vor, und das ist auch Gegenstand unseres tollen Rätsels, zu dem Ihr kleine Antwortbögen in diesem Heft findet. Die besten Einsendungen werden natürlich belohnt!*

Am Schluss sind wir halt doch Architekten und es stellt sich natürlich die Frage, was wir aus der ganzen Sache für uns ziehen. Nun, was wir von Camenzind unter anderem interessant fanden, war, dass die Postmoderne durchaus das Thema des HUMORS gekannt hat. Nicht dass die Scherze immer gut platziert gewesen seien. Aber dieses fürchterlich strenge uns-ernst-nehmen und hochwichtig sein, das könnten wir doch schon ein wenig ablegen, nicht?

Ein Gespräch über die 80er Jahre mit einer Kunsthistorikerin

in der Ausstellung „Postmodernism“ gesehen, die erst in London und neulich, in verkleinerter Form, im Landesmuseum Zürich gezeigt wurde („Postmodernism. Style and Subversion 1970–1990“). Möchtest Du die erste Karte aufdecken?

von Rei Kawakubos Arbeit gewählt, weil Du uns einerseits gesagt hast, dass Du mit der Postmoderne nichts anfangen kannst, andererseits aber immer wieder vom Einfluss der Arbeit Kawakubos gerade aus den 80ern auf Dich erzählst.

in der Mode und gerade in der Frage von Haute Couture und Prêt-à-porter einen ganz entscheidenden Umschwung dar. In diesem Zusammenhang wird Comme des Garçons sehr wichtig [Anm. der Redaktion: die Modedesignerin Rei Kawakubo gründete das Modelabel Comme des Garçons 1969]. Kawakubo zeigt Anfang der Achtziger das erste Mal in Paris ihre Kollektion. Bezogen auf die Wahrnehmung des Körperbilds und Frauenbilds

Wir sind in dieser Zeit noch kleine Kinder gewesen. Du dagegen hast 1980 dein Studium begonnen und diese Zeit schon sehr bewusst erlebt. Uns interessiert also der wache, kritische Blick der Studentin. Für unser Gespräch haben wir fünf Bilder ausgewählt, die für unterschiedliche Aspekte dieser Zeit stehen. Die meisten davon haben wir

Zu Vivienne Westwood [Anm. der Redaktion: britische Modedesignerin – „Queen ▶ Sie selber äussert sich wenig zu direkof Punk“] hingegen habe ich, abgesehen ten Zusammenhängen. Ich glaube aber, von der Geschichte mit der Zusammenarbeit mit den Sex Pistols, keinen Zugang gefunden. Ihr Design hat etwas sehr provozierendes, aber auf einer theatralischen Ebene. Es wirkt viel stärker aufgesetzt, Kawakubos Arbeit scheint mir hingegen vielschichtiger zu sein. Spannend ist auf jeden Fall, dass ab den 1980er Jahren die Prêt-à-porter Mode avantgardistischer und experimentierfreudiger wird als die Haute Couture.

▶ [lacht] ▷ Ist das der Teil der 80er,

zu dem Du keinen Bezug hast?

▶ Ja, genau. Paradoxerweise

▷ Wie sieht es mit der Ebene der Alltagsmode aus, was würdest du sagen haben die 80er dort neues hineingebracht? ▶ Die 80er brachten eine ganz starke Kör-

perlichkeit ins Spiel und setzten sehr auf den sportlichen Typus in der Mode. Das athletische Körpermodell wird extrem in den Vordergrund gebracht. In dieser Zeit tritt auch das Phänomen der Supermodels zum ersten Mal auf, und die Models traten damals immer aussergewöhnlich körperpräsent in Erscheinung. Breite Schultern und schmale Hüften werden gleich einer Collage überformt ausgebildet. Formen waren in den Designs omnipräsent, man war sehr materialfreudig und gestaltete auffallend farbig.

habe ich zu den eigentlichen Formen und auch zu der Idee, Dinge in einer Vitrine unterzubringen, durchaus eine sehr starke und sogar emotionale Beziehung. Warum also kann ich mich dem hier nicht gut annähern? Wenn ich das Teeservice sehe, erinnere ich mich an viele Wohnungen, gerade auch von Architekten- und Designerfreunden, wo derartige Objekte absolut präsent waren. Auch damals habe ich nicht wirklich viel damit anfangen können. Vielleicht ist es der Umgang mit Farbigkeit, Metall und Glanz, und wie diese Elemente zusammengebracht werden. Silber hat, wenn es mit Farbe verbunden wird, etwas Lautes und Kindliches. Es ist, als ob Dinge wie Urlaub am Meer, Kinder, Heiterkeit wie auf einem Cat-Walk erscheinen. Wenn ich die Vitrine anschaue, so stelle ich mir vor, wie sie auf einer Bühne vorbeigezogen wird und man über Lautsprecher eine Stimme hört die sagt: „Findet es bitte lustig und hübsch, es ist emotional, es will zu dir reden...“ Und auch die Erinnerung an einen Besuch im Haus von Charles Jencks in London kommt auf. Dort war alles bis ins Letzte durchdesignt. Vom Fries in der Küche, der aus Gabeln und Messern geformt wurde, bis hin zu den Fensterkreuzen und dem Bett im Schlafzimmer.

Einfach Alles. Das wirkt im Endeffekt

Das 80ies-Interview störend. Und trotzdem gibt es natürlich auch eine starke Faszination, trotz allem beeindruckt dieser unbedingte Wille, alles ästhetisch zu kontrollieren.

▷ In Rossis Teeservice klingt auch

noch eine andere Ebene an. Charles Jencks schrieb der Postmoderne eine Lesbarkeit auf zwei Ebenen zu. Einerseits sollten Symbole geschaffen werden, die jeder versteht, andererseits sollte eine zweite Ebene für die architektonische Fachwelt erhalten bleiben.

Die Verknüpfung der Ebenen sollte über Symbole stattfinden, von denen ja auch dieses Teeservice voll ist. Wir haben uns jedoch gefragt, ob die erste dieser beiden Ebenen jemals funktioniert hat. Wenn man heute mit NichtArchitekten an postmodernen Bauten vorbeigeht, bekommt man jedenfalls das gegenteilige Gefühl.

Giebel, Säule oder Fries mit tatsächlichen Bildern versehen würde, eine Sprache erzeugen könnte, die zum Benutzer spricht.

Die Kommunikation von Architektur braucht Zeit. Erst durch den Umgang mit Gebäuden verbindet man bestimmte Formen mit bestimmten Bauaufgaben. Der Gedanke, dass ein Giebel mir mitteilen soll, dass ein Gebäude eine Kirche oder ein Rathaus ist, ist mir fremd. Die Kommunikation über Formen ist für mich also eine reine Behauptung.

Charles Augustin D’Aviler, der den Cours d‘architecture geschrieben hat, also letztlich wieder ein Vignola-Buch [Anm. der Redaktion: Vignola – italienischer Architekt des Barocks, 1507-1573] auf Vordermann gebracht hat, schreibt an einer Stelle seines Traktats, ▶ Ich glaube nicht, dass das 1691 erschienen ist, dass die Symbolik, bzw. die ZeiDer Gedanke, dass die Gesimse die Buchstaben chenhaftigkeit der Architekmir ein Giebel ettur, wie ein Alphabet funkti- was mitteilen soll, der Architektur sind. ▶ Spontan erinnert es mich

an die Innen-Architektur, die man in der Weltausstellung in London 1862 errichtete. Da gab es auch enorme Nachbauten von Säulenarchitekturen, ganze Strassen, die dann wiederum Ornamente der Völker der Welt vorgestellt haben. Interessant finde ich auch, dass dieser ganze Bereich der Ausstellungsarchitektur überhaupt so ikonisch werden kann, dass sie für eine bestimmte Zeit den ästhetischen Takt setzt.

oder Bühnen geworden, die letztlich vor allem eine bestimmte Atmosphäre auslösen. Zu diesen Atmosphären wiederum habe ich einen Zugang und kann sie nachvollziehen.

▷ Gehen wir zum nächsten Bild, Hans

Holleins Beitrag zur Architekturbiennale 1980 in Venedig. Es handelt sich um einen Teil der „Strada Novissima“ im Arsenale. Dort haben 80er-Jahre Architekten jeweils eine Fassade entworfen, die dann von den damals arbeitslosen Bühnenbildnern der Cinecitta gebaut wurde. Hinter diesen Fassaden haben die Architekten ihre Arbeiten ausgestellt. Die Ausstellung war sehr erfolgreich und hat übrigens auch bei den Nicht-Architekten enorme Resonanz ausgelöst.

▷ Man könnte sich das damit erklären, dass es noch nicht so viele gebaute Ikonen der Postmoderne gegeben hätte, aber die Postmoderne fing schon in den 1970ern an. ▶ Ja, eigentlich sogar noch früher, so gab

es das Haus der Mutter von Venturi & Scott-Brown damals schon längere Zeit.

Die Ideen waren schon vorher da. Aber ich denke, dass der Unterschied zwischen der Postmoderne der 1980er Jahre und derjenigen der 1970er ist, dass sie auf eine Art und Weise „fett“ wird, vehementer, präsenter, haptischer und körperlicher. Die früheren Arbeiten von Venturi sind fragiler und abstrakter. Vielleicht ist es auch diese Veränderung, die mich den 80ern gegenüber skeptisch macht.

▷ Hier könnte man zu einem weiteren

Aspekt überleiten, der uns bei Camenzind interessiert, der des Humors. Wir finden ja heute in der Architekturdiskussion und auch der Architektur

In der Postmoderne hingegen wird die Collage wird wirklich physisch gezeigt.

lografisches Portrait von ihm von Edwina Orr und David Trayner aus dem Jahr 1987. Das Bild war auch in der „Postmodernism“ Ausstellung zu sehen und hat mich wegen seiner Ausstrahlung fasziniert. Es handelt sich um eine Art Kopf in einer Vitrine.

▶ Was interessiert Euch daran? ▷ Das Hologramm hat uns fasziniert, weil es an der Wand wie ein künstlicher, abgetrennter Kopf hing, fast wie in Formaldehyd eingelegt. Was auf den 11

▶ Ich habe mich damals als

Für mich waren die 80er eine energiegeladene Zeit in einer Inszenierungswelt.

Was haben wir hier noch?

▶ Ich habe das nicht so er-

lebt. Wenn es einen nostalgischen Rückblick gibt, dann lassen sich die 80er nicht mit dem Thema der Vereinsamung zusammenbringen. Für mich persönlich sind die 80er durch Studium und Aufbruch geprägt, ich erinnere mich aber auch an eine sehr energiegeladene Stimmung in dieser Inszenierungswelt.

Das Zurückgehen in den Kokon, die Melancholie haben für mich eher mit den 90ern zu tun: mit Falco, Depeche Mode, oder der Grunge-Bewegung. Wenn es Abgrund in den 80ern gab, wurde dieser nicht thematisiert. Für mich ist das Ho-

Ein altes System wie die Säulenordnung wird so verwendet, dass eine neue Ebene entsteht, nämlich die Modernität von Muster und Serialität. Säulen sind eigentlich dazu da, um Proportionen im Raum zu organisieren. Das wird hier völlig ad absurdum geführt. Andererseits gibt es den Abschluss mit dem grossen Gesims.

Wirklich spannend finde ich in diesem

Das 80ies-Interview Kontext die Frage, wie gross der eigentliche Baukörper ist.

▷ Bringt es „Beschleunigung“ mehr

▷ Vielleicht können im Kontext des Italieners Aldo Rossi, der in Japan baut, das Thema der Globalisierung noch kurz ansprechen. Oft wird mit den 80ern in Verbindung gebracht, dass die Globalisierung dort so richtig losgegangen sei. War das tatsächlich so präsent?

▶ Ja, eher.

man auch eher jetzt als in den 80ern.

Vielleicht beschleunigten sich da erst einige Teile, sprich die Global Cities, und die Beschleunigung hat uns jetzt ganz erfasst. [BK brummt zustimmend] Wenn Du ein Schlusswort bringen solltest, wie sähe das aus?

▶ Ich jedenfalls bin zu der Zeit nicht so viel gereist wie heute. Und ich glaube, dass der weltweite Transport von Ideen schon viel älter ist als nur ein paar Jahr- ▶ Schlussworte sind nicht wirklich mein zehnte. Sicherlich aber beginnt zu dieser Ding. The Space Shuttle n the morning of January 28, 1986 I was sitting in front of the television totally consumed by watching the lift-off of the space shuttle Challenger from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. I was five years old.

73 seconds after takeoff the space shuttle broke apart, completely disintegrating in a visible explosion like a giant white puffy firework. My entire universe also exploded. The concept of disaster had entered into my life – along with the concept of a public dimension, and subsequently, public space.

In the United States, we have a

Challenger

tradition of putting flags at half-mast when disasters happen. The embrace of the flag as national symbol in the USA is fairly open – everyone from conservatives to liberals might openly embrace the red-whiteblues. Flags are ubiquitous, communicating a fondness for the country, or a certain sad solidarity: the flag is

used to signify memorial when flown at half-mast. If you see a flag only half way up its pole, you wonder why for a moment, wonder what might have happened to necessitate this public gesture.

If you see too many flags at half-mast in a row, you will turn on the radio or television or check online media to see what kind of it-wasbound-to-happensomeday-catastrophe has occurred.

Since 9/11 many of us in the USA feel like we are wait-

ing for the logical sequel, another incident of equal import and terror. This is true for those of us who are expats, even in our foreign context – we are haunted by a very real specter of catastrophe. Something could happen, something will happen, things do happen, from New York to Tokyo to Oslo.

We believe in massive failure.

In retrospect, the 1980s seem like a decade where everything was blurry, developing brightly out of the murky background like a polaroid. The saccharine, neon 80s

The 80ies had a dark side from Reagan at the Iran Contra Affair hearings to a small child’s fascination changing into terror while watching live televised images.

Things grew dark, and darker. Many of us now us starting out in establishing ourselves, were children in the 1980s – so some of this blur might be due to the fuzzy lens of childhood.

Yet, even though I was only five years old, the Challenger disaster echoed clearly through my childhood, and into the present day.

The space shuttle was a symbol of the mythical astronaut – someone who went beyond beyond. The disaster was the kind of adult tragedy on a scale that was incomprehensible but powerful to a small child recognizing it for the first time.

Seeing the images now, remembering the flags flying at half-mast, it is hard not to think that a generation of chil-

Somehow it was the adult sequel to the Challenger Disaster in a twisted narrative arc. The scale was immense, as beyond adult comprehension as the Challenger was to a child. My coming-of-age was bookended in this way, the end of an innocent childhood in 1986 and the start of adult worries and moreover scepticism - in 2001. I cannot help but think of others in the 80s/90s range, who lived a similar experience and live with the same ghosts. We watched the Challenger explode, we saw hours of video as 9/11 unfolded, images of blurry people headed down an imaginary elevator from the towers. Papers from the towers even blew onto the deck of a friend’s house in Brooklyn – the images on television were real, however implausible and distant they seemed. The flags first flew at half-

mast, then blossomed like invasive clover all over the country as solidarity became a public obsession.

I especially consider those who have also chosen to interact with the built environment by seeking to change it: the landscape architects, architects, planners and so on. We are acutely aware of the idea of a public realm, of things like flags flying at half-mast, how disasters play out in spatial terms. I wonder if the reason why so

many people are engaged in idealistic forms of practice, seeking to subvert the usual structures of power or processes of building, or those who want to help people who are routinely sidelined have been drawn to these pursuits as a reaction. If somehow the ghosts of the very – and increasingly – public traumas, collective traumas televised on the news and splashed over the internet, have actually traumatized

us into action. We seem to believe in massive failures as normative markers, inevitable. Are we all simply reacting to the public, spatial and visual evidence of our time by attempting earnestly, naïvely, and vitally to “bust ghosts?”

Um uns war es schade, um uns im Westen, die wir’s in ihrem Schatten so gemütlich hatten, ohne den Fortschritt der Jahrzehnte zuvor. Damals waren wir auf dem besten Weg in die Zukunft, in eine Zeit ohne Zeit, ohne Konsum. Kein Materialismus mehr, nur noch Interaktion, eine endlose, unendlich

leichte Performance der absoluten Gegenwart. Und dann die Wende, zurück auf null, all die Errungenschaften der 80er verdrängt und verloren, plötzlich wieder nur Aufbruch und Wachs-

Ah, dein Lieblingslied, die Mauer und die 80er. Aber stimmt das denn? Hatten wir nicht davor schon genug Zeit, um uns zu ändern? Die Mauer ist ‹61, warum hätte es gerade auf die 80er und 90er noch ankommen sollen?

Na, das brauchte eben seine Zeit. Die Mauer als Staudamm sozusagen. Erst lief die Zeit noch weiter, in den 60ern und 70ern, wie Wasser den Fluss hinunter. Da gab es historisch noch was zu tun, zu bewältigen und zu modernisieren. Aber dann?

Anstatt GESTERN, HEUTE, MORGEN plötzlich nur noch HIER und DORT. Und schließlich nur noch HIER, totale Gegenwart, der Zeitenlauf ein trockenes Flussbett. Und überall Menschen, die nicht mehr Teil einer gemeinsamen Geschichte sind, die sie wenige Jahre zuvor noch vereinnahmt und getragen hat. Sondern die einfach da sind, sorgenfrei zwar, aber auch ohne Plan, ohne ein Ziel, für das man hätte planen müssen.

Und dann, vielleicht nur aus Langeweile, fangen diese Menschen plötzlich an, sich

mit sich selbst zu beschäftigen, Fragen zu stellen und Wünsche zu entwickeln. Sie wollen wissen, wer ICH ist, und was es in ihrem Leben macht. Und bald begreifen sie, dass ICH nicht mehr in die alten Schablonen passt, sie merken, dass sie ihr Leben nun gestalten müssen.

So hören sie auf, Zeichen ihres eigenen Wohlstands zu sein, schauen sie nicht mehr auf die andern, sondern treten zur Seite und beginnen, sich ihre eigenen Welten zu basteln, samt neuer Werte und Sensibilitäten. Und das trockene Flussbett verwandelt sich langsam in einen Archipel grenzenloser Vielfalt, einen zerklüfteten Raum voll unendlich vieler Überraschungen.

Alles Träume! Als ob die 80er nicht ein Jahrzehnt des Konsums gewesen wären, die kleinen Inseln des Archipels vollgestopft mit unnützem Kram. Immer die letzte Mode, kaum individuell am Ende. Ich erinnere mich gut an Susanne, das Nachbarskind, das immer alles hatte.

Auf meiner Insel waren wir sehr wohl neidisch aufeinander, keine Ahnung, wie das in deine Erinnerung passt.

Ja klar, so war’s doch auch bei mir. Aber das meine ich ja, es ging gerade erst los.

Da waren natürlich noch die Ausläufer der Nachkriegszeit, das Wohlstandsversprechen aus der Zeit des Mangels. Aber aus dem

eine immer währende Performance unserer selbst.

Und während diese Performance noch eine materialistische Angelegenheit war, hätten wir schon bald gemerkt, dass soziale Affekte am Ende intensiver sind als diejenigen, die uns die Objekte bereiten. Wir hätten begonnen, uns gegenseitig zu konsumieren, soziale Interaktion als Superkonsum, bis zu dem Punkt, an dem wir das Interesse am Materiellen verloren hätten.

Und schließlich, statt weiterhin an der Maschine zu stehen, wäre das eigene Leben zum Fokus unserer Arbeit geworden.

Aber dann kam die Wende.

Und die Uhren wurden neu gestellt, zurück zu Wohlstand und Wachstum, leider.

Und du meinst, das dauert noch immer an, seit nun fast 23 Jahren? Scheint es nicht, dass das so langsam wieder anders wird? Dass der soziale Konsum wieder zunimmt, über unsere Telefone und das Netz? Was vielleicht auch bedeutet, dass es nun anders herum läuft. Erst der Konsum, der dann nach Vielfalt verlangt, gierig, nach Intensität. Erfinde dich selbst, aber nicht

aus Langeweile, sondern als neuer Imperativ der Arbeitswelt, die damit beschäftigt ist, für den Affekt-Nachschub zu sorgen.

Womit aber trotzdem der Materialismus bald keine Rolle mehr spielen sollte, einfach, weil niemand mehr Zeit für so ein Leben hat.

und niemand mehr endgültig wichtig ist. Wo wir aber eher bei uns sind,

Dass wir Kinder der 80er schon längst wissen, wie sie sich anfühlen wird. Wie

unsere Kindheit nämlich, wie unser Leben damals.

Die Zeitlosigkeit des Jahrzehnts, im Schatten der Mauer, seine Buntheit und Vielfalt und gelegentliche Hysterie, aber mit dem Kinderblick, der alles noch unendlicher scheinen ließ.

Eine Zeit, in der alles ein Abenteuer war, ohne Sorgen und Mühen, das Umherschweifen mit den anderen in einem unendlichen Sommer, der auch für die Erwachsenen unendlich war.

Mit der kindlichen Selbstverständlichkeit, im Zentrum des eigenen Lebens zu stehen, aber

doch immer bereit, sich auf ein neues Spiel einzulassen.

Ich glaube, so wird sie sich anfühlen, die Zukunft, immer gleich und immer anders, vollkommene Geborgenheit und immerwährende Veränderung, unendlich aufregend und sehr, sehr bunt.

Du hattest eine gute Kindheit, wie?

Hm, ja, ich glaube schon.

Die Kippe im Mund, immer am Qualmen, durch die Jahrzehnte durch, seit meine Großmutter 17 war hat sie geraucht, seit 1928, da jobbte sie als Strumpfhosenmodel und studierte Modedesign. Sie qualmte sich durch Weltkriegsphase, Wirtschaftswunderära, 68er und 70er, Helmut Schmidt-Epoche und Helmut Kohl-Zeitalter, danach: sowieso. Die Geste des Rauchens elegant, schick, frech. Marke HB. Seit 1955.

Aus der Pappkiste, die sie gerade öffnet, kommen Weinflaschen raus, ein Geschenk von der Deutschen Bank, regelmäßig jedes Jahr zum Geburtstag und zu Weihnachten. Ihr engster Freund, beim Nachnamen genannt, Michelmann, war der Bankdirektor der Zentrale Frankfurt.

Dieses Spanferkel verzichtet bewusst auf historische Verweise, bezieht optische und haptische Kulturbezüge aus banalen

Alltagszusammenhängen.

Das Schwarten-Dekor der Oberfläche: Missachtung der konstruktiven FüllStruktur (Apfel, Kartoffel, Salz, Pfeffer, Majoran) des Inneren.

Mit dieser bunten braunorange laminierten Oberfläche, kunststoffartig, definiert dieses Objekt wie kaum ein anderes die Message der Memphis-Visionäre: Resopal! Gezähmte, weil gegrillte, Expressivität im zweckmäßig metallig-farbenen Passpartout.

Die von den Erfindern geforderten wesentliche Charakteristika der MemphisProduktsprache werden in diesem, ja, „MemphisSchwein“ manifestgleich erfüllt, stilistisch minimalistisch und figurativ angereichert. „Der bildliche Konsum fordert das Affektverhältnis Mensch-Objekt.“ fordert und ruft uns Matteo Thun zu. Dieser Bildschatz und

dieses Fundstück aus einer archäologischen Fotofundgrube schafft die Idee des Schwein-Design als Memphis-Möglichkeit: Es zeigt die stilbildende und stilgebende Bewegung der 1980er Jahre in ihrer maßgeblichsten Eigenschaft, dem avantgardistischen Impuls einer neuen Epoche. Nahezu alle Gestaltungskonventionen werden außer Kraft gesetzt. Im Kontrast zum kultivierten Material und seiner ge-

wohnten, weil üblichen Verwendungsart, gilt Memphis und die neuartig Kombination von Inhalt, besser Füllung, und äußerem Material – pop-artig und comic-haft, 80er forever: „The NewInternational-Style“. Oder eben „Spanferkel“!

„Weil er sich immerzu dreht, kehrt er zurück, der Wind“ Amerika habe ich im Jahr 2000 zum ersten Mal besucht. Das war für mich wie das Aufwachen in einem Traum, einem westdeutschen Kindertraum aus den 1980er Jahren. Jetzt endlich war alles echt!

Meine erste Amerikafahrt bedeutete für mein Leben so etwas, wie für Goethe seine Ita-

lienreise: Die Welt, die er aus seinem Frankfurter Elternhaus nur von Kupferstichen kannte, ersehnt und erwartet, umgab ihn plötzlich, als er Rom betrat. Keine Fantasiewelt, sondern jene große, weite, wichtige und machtvolle, gute und schöne Welt, die aus der Ferne

mit unzähligen Dingen sein bisheriges Leben geprägt hatte. Mein Rom war Chicago. Mein erster Flug, mein erster Biss in meinen ersten saftigen Hamburger, mein erster free refill, die Hochhäuser, die Budenarchitektur der Ein-

kaufsstraßen, der weite azurblaue Himmel waren die Dinge, die ich bisher nur aus dem Fernsehen kannte. Meine Begeisterung war ganz persönlich und wies gleichzeitig völlig über mich hinaus in Richtung Freiheit.

Die amerikanische Freiheit hatte in der politischen Propaganda meiner Kinderjahre noch als ein Gegenpol zum zweifelhaften Frieden der Sowjetunion gegolten. (Jene hatte in den 1980er Jahren permanent „Der Welt den Frieden“ gewünscht, einen Friedensgruß nach ihrem Maßstab, den große Teile der Welt ungern oder gar nicht erwidert hatten.) Diese Dialektik des Kalten Kriegs hatte ich stark verinnerlicht, so dass ich neben meiner Amerikasehnsucht immer auch ein reges Interesse an Russland behielt. Nicht zuletzt hatte auch der Osten rührende Bilder

Markus Podehl und Lebensentwürfe in den Westen gesendet.

Als das „Gleichgewicht“ der atomaren Gegner am Ende der Dekade zu Gunsten der amerikanischen Freiheit aus dem Lot geriet, spätestens aber als diese nach dem 11. September 2001 durch die rigide Friedenssicherungspolitik der USA einen faden Beigeschmack erhielt, fand ich, dass es an der Zeit war, nun doch wenigstens die Ruinen der ehemaligen sozialistischen Weltmacht kennenzulernen.

2004 ging ich also nach Russland, die Welt der verwirklichten Utopie und deren Scheiterns.

In meiner von Bildbän-

den und der Lektüre Dostojewskijs und Solschenizyns gespeisten Fantasie hatten die Menschen hier mehr als anderswo die Gelegenheit, zu einem inneren Frieden zu kommen, mitunter als Frucht aus Verzicht und sogar aus Qual und Bedrängnis. In meinem Kindertraum lebten hier arme, aber liebe- und würdevolle Menschen in einer ebensolchen, kalten und grauen Welt. In meiner Vorstellung wohnte man dort in Außen rohen und einfachen und im Inneren mit Blumentapete tapezierten und auf das nötigste

reduziert eingerichteten Plattenbauten, wie in Klöstern. Für mich waren sie Ausdruck der Ve r g e g e n w ä r t i g u n g des Eigentlichen, des Menschlichen, des Lebens selbst. Die wievielte Suche nach einem

anständigen Kaffee, die wievielte Winternacht in der schlecht beheizten Wohnung, das wievielte Bestechungsgeld, das wievielte absurde Alltagsproblem mich nach drei Jahren schließlich entgeisterte, weiß ich

nicht. An die eigenen Grenzen hat mich Russland gebracht, und es ist hier, nahe dieser unliebsamen Hindernisse, wo ich jetzt auch manchmal Frieden finde.

Dann bin ich vor gut einem Jahr in meine Heimat zurückgekehrt, an den Ort, wo der Fernseher stand, an dem ich die Bücher gelesen habe. Es war an der Zeit dazu. Zu Hause sein bedeutet eigentlich in Freiheit und Friede zu leben, in der Sehnsucht und im Einvernehmen mit den eigenen Grenzen. Hier bedarf es nur wenig, und beide Quellgeister sind wieder bei mir, die Sehnsucht und die Geborgenheit, ohne die es weder Amerika noch Russland gäbe.

Interview with Tom Emerson Tom Emerson (6a architects) has become known for intelligent remodelling of historical buildings; projects that involve the configuration of new spaces alongside the meticulous renovation of old ones. Invited to give a talk at the BHSF office as part of the Ghostbusters series, Tom Emerson chose to speak in depth about the RIBAAward-winning Raven Row project (completed 2009). Raven Row is a non-profit contemporary art gallery in the historic heart of east London. The gallery occupies two Grade 1-listed 17th century row houses that have been subjected to a succession of changes throughout their history; remodelled, reused, run down and rebuilt, they have passed through many hands, a piece of living history its trajectory charts the rise and fall and rise again of the fortunes of Spitalfields.

These deserted domestic scenes and dark stairwells form a ghostly record, almost as if -in a standard horror plot- the house had come alive and documented itself. Emerson discussed how architects confront the ghosts of the past when working with old buildings and how with this project they sought to maximise its past lives, to re-haunt the house with its own ghosts. In particular he talked about a box of eighty photos that they discovered in a shoebox at the London Metropolitan Archive during their research and how this unlikely archive inspired their design.

▶ Tom Emerson. – Our project definitely sits within the almost continual change the building has undergone. The photograph itself dates from 1967 and shows the first floor interior of one of the two houses that were built by Huguenot silk traders in the 18th century. But what is interesting about the photographs - there are about eighty of them - and the building itself is that the origin of both are uncertain. So the interior shown is more or less an interior from 1754, the date I give as when the building was built. There were buildings on that site before though, and there are a few elements remaining from the late 17th century. Anyway, after it was built, due to the flow of politics and economics and migration in London, the buildings have

Since the houses at Raven Row have undergone a long series of transformations, where do you place yourself in this process? And what role did the photographs (like the one with the furniture sorted according to colour) play?

The photos we chose to talk about in the interview provide photographic documentation of the house from 1905 up to the 1970s. It is not known who took them or why. This adds to their uncanny, or better their unheimlich, quality. They are artistically stylised portraits of unpeopled

▶ Well, there is quite a lot of published history about the building. Nikolaus Pevsner, the architectural historian, has written about it, and it’s in the survey of London, which is the most authoritative documentation of buildings in London done after the war. So it does have a formal history. It has also been mentioned in various journals and has been attributed, wrongly, to various architects. But maybe this kind of history belonging to heritage is more onedimensional. I don’t mean to undermine it, it’s very important. But in the business of making new places, new spaces, new buildings and thinking about the future, the mysterious debris of history is possibly more important than the authority of proof and record. These kind of images remain important because for the architect

▶ We had to conform with the authorities, but this was not stimulating for the design process, whereas those images were very important for our design and our discussions. ▷ This leads us to the next picture, which shows a part of the house that was shipped to America.

▶ That image is the room next door to the one in the picture before that. It is from 1914 I believe, the beginning of the first world war, or you could say the end of the 19th century. By the way, the fireplace which we never found - was apparently a pink steak-colour. In the early 1920s the whole room was dismantled and taken to the Chicago Art Institute as a room set. It was in place there up to the late forties or early fifties, when they took it down and stored it. It was brought back to England in the eighties, I think. The room was found in a series of boxes stored in a barn and was brought back to the building. We then reassembled it inside of the building like a crazy architectural jigsaw-puzzle, restored it, and replaced missing pieces. But most importantly, during the period when the room was away, there were two fires in the building – in the fifties and in the seventies. So this part somehow missed

It was nice to put together a puzzle at the same time because this gave us the slightly funny feeling that we were not only designing the building’s future but also reconstructing its past in a kind of forensic reconstruction, finding the pieces, working out whether they could still go together, whether there was enough. ▷ Looking at the pictures, up until now I thought the building had a personality.

But it also seems to be like a family, as you said. ▶ It feels like different bits of the building have different types of behaviour. Also, different bits of the building have very different architectural qualities.

This room here is definitely a very grand space. The ceiling, the fireplace and the door are carved. But just one floor above there is no decoration at all.

thing that remains after the fire is the architecture, this is sort of the counterpart to it. Here, the only thing that remains is the human equipment, the furniture. It seems that the building has this extraordinary behaviour of selecting what parts to keep and what it allows to disappear. ▷ Does the next picture also have the ordinary atmosphere that you mentioned? ▶ Yes. In some respects this picture is my favourite. It’s so ordinary, and the idea that this building houses one of the most important 18th century interiors in London is completely absent. The only thing this photograph shows is a very modest, even poor lifestyle. Two beds in a small room and a radio. The idea that all the history going through that building adds up to

this shows that there is something very powerful in the life of the city. It doesn’t stop and pause. It just goes on. And this is why I like that image very much; I think it speaks about Spitalfields in the sixties very evocatively. Also, the light is very beautiful. It’s quite a melancholic photograph.

We don’t know anything about who slept in those separated beds. And the fact that somebody took it and printed it is extraordinary. Why would you do that? ▷ With most of the pictures you sent us, one question remains: Why were they taken? ▶ Completely. This question ended up becoming sort of the thesis of the project, which was about accumulating the past lives of its occupiers, the past events of the city and leaving evidence, leaving

Ein Neubau blieb vom Mitteilungsbedürfnis der Anwohner bisher verschont. Das von Clarke und Kuhn auf einer Brache am Moritzplatz errichtete Aufbau-Haus glänzt noch immer mit seiner elegant strukturierten und fein detaillierten Betonfertigteil-Fassade.

Obwohl mit Modulor, AufbauVerlag und dem Prince Charles Club eher hippe Nutzer eingezogen sind, löst das Gebäude, möglicherweise durch seine Randlage auf einer ehemals unbebauten Fläche, scheinbar keine Aggressionen aus. Oder es ist einfach zu gelungen. Bei der Brache auf der gegenüberliegenden Straßenecke verhält es sich schon wieder anders.

Obwohl hier die Prinzessinengärten als bekanntes UrbanGardening-Projekt eigentlich die gemeinschaftliche Inbesitznahme einer Freifläche repräsentieren, wurde deren zunehmende Entwicklung zum Trend-Hangout bereits mit einem „Gentrify“-Stencil am Eingang kommentiert.

Searching for ghosts is a semiotic activity that takes place in practically every new technology employed for the transmission or storage of sounds and images. People have found ghosts in television and radio static, music recordings and photographs.

Designed for transmission, the static television channel is waiting for a ghost.

Domesticating the Uncanny Ghosts are clearly not bound to spend their endless years in an ecology of dark forests and Gothic castles; they happily dwell in unused communication lines and on ether frequencies that no one seems to listen to.

But as the uncanny shadow of modern media technology, they have also been perpetually subjected to our efforts at domestication.

While ghosts were rarely depicted in painting, film has supplied them with an endless variety of visible forms ever since George Méliès’ Le Manoir du Diable (1896). In the era of spiritualism, dealing with the supernatural may have been a logical choice for early cinematographers, tapping into a range of popular interests and anxieties. Nevertheless, by turning the intangible traces of an elsewhere that haunts us into an image one can tinker with, cinema naturalized the phantasmatic, fixing its place in our economy of sense. The history of horror films can be seen as a history of domestication. No longer merely haunting the medium, the ghost became entrapped in it.

Busting ghosts Ghostbusters (1984) represents a decisive step towards the exorcism of ghosts from technology.

In this film, ghosts no longer haunt technology; the supernatural and the technological are, once again, radically opposed.

The Ghostbusters encounter their first ghost in a library,

sporting Victorian attire; here as elsewhere, ghosts belong to a pre-technological past.

Being expelled from university for their unscientific research, the three protagonists had started a private enterprise, allowing them more freedom to develop technologies for the eradication of the supernatural.

In New York in the ‘80s, it goes without saying that this move is financially motivated; the extermination of ghosts should clearly be left to the market (in fact, state intervention through the Environmental Protection Agency almost leads to Armageddon). But more than a mere plea for the liberties of neoliberalism, the film suggests that advanced technology is the only way to eradicate ghosts from the past. The nuclear-powered contraption the Ghostbusters employ against their adversaries represents the pinnacle of 1980s technology.

This technology is free from ghosts, and because it is, it can be employed in the large-scale exorcism of NYC.

This brings us back to Weber.

Technology and reason are supposed to be the end of ghosts; the modern world no longer needs the supernatural. But what this comfortable narrative tends to overlook is that rational defense is self-defeating: ghosts are nothing but reason’s victims coming back to haunt us. The fantasy of Adam Smith’s invisible hand guided the Ghostbusters into the spirit business; but this hand, supposed to turn isolated private interests into

an affluent society, has turned into a skeleton’s fist clenched around the neck of New York’s financial district. Like all forms of reason, economic rationality has a host of spectral side effects.

Modernization is an ongoing struggle against ghosts – but the instruments we employ to eliminate them always lead new ones to emerge. The true danger of busting ghosts lies in the fact that as much as they themselves might want to, ghosts don’t die.

Megalithic Modernism and a Modern Megalith

For this year’s ‘Glasgow International Festival of Art’ the artist Jeremy Deller constructed an inflatable life-size replica of Stonehenge, Britain’s most famous stone circle, and called it ‘Sacrilege’. People were invited to come and bounce around irreverently on this witty sculpture as a new way of interacting with this mysterious icon of ancient British history.

But if you climb the hill behind Glasgow’s Sighthill housing estate you will come across another stone circle, standing between the tower blocks, the motorway and an incinerator.

This is a site of astronomical interest (as the name Sighthill implies, it offers a clear view of the sky), the stones laid out there demarcate the rise and fall of the moon and it is reputed to be a place where ancient pagan rituals took place.

The children on the estate have come to believe that this stone circle is haunted and they fear its ancient magic.

And yet, what people seem quick to forget is that this stone circle, like Deller’s, is a modern construction. It’s interesting how quickly a structure can become haunted, it just has to evoke loss, the sense that it is the vestigial remains of something that was there and is not any more. Ancient as it appears, this circle was actually built as part of the estate in the 1970s.

Headed by a local science fiction writer and amateur astronomer, Duncan Lunan, the original plan for the project was to build a replica of Stonehenge out of modern materials. But in the end they opted for a very traditional circle, whose stones show the line of the midsummer

It seems apt that this endeavour was the brainchild of a science fiction writer, it captures the spirit of post-war utopianism, and of a shining vision of a technological future that was actually an ahistorical fantasy much like Scotland’s fictional nostalgia for its pre-historical pagan past.

What had been intended as shining beacons of a glossy future were rapidly consigned to a vision of ruination and despair. As unemployment bit hard at the beginning of the 80s, the community living on the estate went into progressive decline. The estate went from being state-of-theart living to socially stigmatized slums. Families moved out and addicts, asylum seekers and exconvicts took up some of the flats, many remained empty.

‘Work as if you were in the early days of a better nation.’ This is a phrase often quoted by eccentric Scottish artist Alasdair Gray, a

madcap chronicler of the nation’s psyche, and now inscribed on the walls of the Scottish parliament building.

This statement seems particularly poignant for

the city of Glasgow. It is a city of workers, and still identifies as such despite its industrial decline. The quote recalls both the romanticised power of an imaginary pre-historic nation, when men still believed in their monoliths; but, also, the seventies when this stone circle was being built, before decay and despondency of the Thatcher-era set in. The monolithic tower blocks, many of which now stand empty, loom

around this stone circle with their gaping glassless windows and seem to echo its aesthetic on a gargantuan scale; both broken monuments to an extant vision.

But perhaps the circle is best left as it is, for in its ruined state, it seems they inadvertently created something much more powerful; it will enter the local mythology, for whom it stands as a ghostly memorial for the vanquished estate and a past-future that never came to pass.

Throughout the ages the building industry has come to count on architects to establish a standard for the use of cutting edge technology and sustainable construction methods. From solar integrated roof panels to heat loss prevention glazing, there are constant innovations being made that allow buildings to be more environmentally friendly, low cost and energy efficient. However, this sustainable phenomenon

only addresses the phase when buildings are being built and doesn’t necessarily play a role when the time comes to demolish the exact same structure.

With most razed buildings left as rubble destined for a landfill we must ask ourselves: is there life after death for architectural manifestations?

Historically there has always been a revival from the rubble in communities affected by natural 46

with just basic tools and their bare hands. By this process hundreds of buildings were created, most of which still stand today.

There are several contemporary artists and design-

ers who have taken inspiration from construction landfills, creating projects that address the reuse of rubble. Canadian artist Laura St. Pierre is specifically interested in creating urban dwellings from discarded building parts she finds in landfills. In her creations you can find wall elements, doors, windows, refrigerators, wooden pallets, and even furniture.

She assembles these random pieces into one-story built configurations that resemble typical housing units. In another example, the company MINIWIZ uses everyday recyclable items in their structural designs. During the 2010 International Flora Expo in Taipei, Taiwan they created a pavilion out of 1.5 million plastic bottles.

Known as the EcoARK it was a 130-meter long structure that contained an amphitheater, exhibition hall, and a built in air-conditioning system that collected water during rainy periods. What is extraordinary about this project is that the recycled bottles weren’t just a skin for

the building but actually modified components that acted like structural bricks for the entire pavilion.

The facade is often a building’s most important element and there are many designers out there who are discovering that various facade elements can be generated through the use of demolished building parts. In South Korea the artist Choi Jeong-Hwa created a public installation which was a covering for a ten-story scaffolding out of over 1,000 used doors. A similar facade system can be found in Copenhagen’s Christiania district, where non-existing building laws have allowed its inhabitants to build dwellings from various demolished building parts. One occupant’s home is made entirely out of recycled windows allowing for a panoramic view and unlimited daylight towards its interior.

When a building gets demolished most of its history and identity is lost forever, destined to a

landfill it becomes forgotten in a mound of rubble.

But what if by using this rubble you could preserve architectural greatness, or better yet cultural identity?

The 2012 Pritzker Prize winner, Chinese architect Wang Shu, is doing just that. With his cultural and educational buildings he has captured the spirit of traditional craftsmanship by using locally available salvaged materials. For the campus at the Chinese Academy of Art, the Xiangshan School, he created a brand new building whose materials give it a character that makes it appear as if it has been there for hundreds of years.

The same can be said for his design of the Ningbo History Museum. The primary structural materials for this building are layers of broken pieces of stone, brick, and tile stacked on top of each other. Separately these materials tell the stories of different buildings now lost, but together they form a magnificent new building with a unique character and

aesthetic. By resurrecting discarded and demolished building parts the cultural identity of China and its history have become forever immortalized in these structures.

With architecture’s latest trends pointing towards more sustainable and performative materials there still doesn’t seem to be a solution for the waste generated from demolished buildings. In spite of this there are artists and architects out there who have taken this problem into consideration and are generating exciting projects that show various uses for discarded materials. As long as we continue developing these new ideas, we will find a solution for the rubble building up around us. In the near future we may find ourselves with an answer that will help us deal with the ghosts of architecture’s past.

The essence of knowledge and the tour, as a real event that happened to

Scene 1: What do we talk about when we discuss tourism?

Foremost is the notion of the tour (from the French ‘turn’) of a new place and the attitudes formed towards it, characterized by an individual’s reception of the images and experiences they encounter.

Tourism’s recent history however has become jaded by a combination of both the accessibility of ever-more exotic locations, alongside a reformed understanding of the commodification of authentic places that occurs when they strive to cater for our desire for the original. This leads to a search for ever more far-off encounters, and serves to undermine the locations’ ability to capitalise on its original authenticity.

This etymological shift in the use of the word ‘tourism’ may have incurred negative associations and led towards its (western) negative regard. It is still the most useful term for denoting the simplicity of the tour, a tour for pleasure, for expe-

rience, to indulge in another reality; where the ‘tourist gaze’ is an approach to a certain lived experience.

Scene 2: Invited as a part of the Eternal Tour happening in São Paulo, Camenzind sent a mercenary to represent the international bird of paradise as spokesperson, adventurer, discoverer and haphazard entrepreneur for a two-week placement period. This project came to resemble more a work of journalistic enquiry than academic or business research.

His time was thus spent looking, listening, interviewing and tasting the fruits of the knowledge jungle in São Paulo. Asking questions of all those he came across on his way, his theme was everything that was foreign. What is foreign? An exchange was to take place: his foreign-ness, the people he was surrounded with, an environment that might give it an existential touch, however on his return the results were not just peculiar, but absurd.

Generally, tourism is characterized and motivated by a tension of difference: between someone coming from outside a certain situation, and somebody locally rooted in it.

Resulting from this tension, tourism could

be described as something that has always been a peculiar mixture between leisure and learning, and as something that has had to strive for justification especially in its commercialized form.

numbers of people in a short space of time to places of leisure interest. The concepts of eco-tourism, soft tourism and integrative tourism emerged as expressions of the will to better combine the needs and views of outsiders with those of the locals.

Foreign implies a distance, removal. Pleasure was taken in a voyage whereby its chief aim would be to investigate this gap. Our discoverer appeared to have attempted a kind of method-acting role-play, maintaining an enchanted, foreign approach to all things. His sense of otherness lasted an entire two weeks, his mantra, “welcome to foreign”.

Organisation of ideals and materials exchanged between two groups – native and visiting – is central to the notion of the knowledge producing tour.

W h e n contextualised as such, it becomes c l e a r t h a t ‘knowle d g e tour-

ism’ does not have primarily recreational purposes. It is rather a form of pedagogy, of research methods enacted in previously unknown or unusual environments, ones that receive new meaning in a knowledge-based society.

When asked about the various intellectuals he interviewed vague mentions were made of anthropophagi, utterances of pleasures of pollution, hallucinogenic powers of certain trees that grow in the central reservation of the Avenida Vinte e Trés de Maio. When questioned on urban growth, a remark was made on the gentrification of ‘concrete plants’, then a rambling account of a night navigating a ‘steel river’ with nothing but Irucum to as guide. A brief poetic remark on the body’s capacity to resonate whilst perceive was followed by a raucous version of the 30’s stage hit “When Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”.

If the knowledge tour is a transfer of knowledge not only outside of one’s own context, but also out of the country in which it is undertaken, its complexities become manifold. Difficulties in controlling and containing these complexities then bring a comparison with classic tourism to the fore.

Furthermore, our understanding of the acquisition and production of (essentially western) knowledge is that the further afield one goes, the more unique the knowledge produced

is likely to be, thus increasing its potential value and desirability. Counter to the notion that different things can be learnt in different places, the notion of capital production is pervasive to a potentially innocent basis.

Reflect on the initial intent: when an ‘explorer’ delves too deeply into a certain subjectivity, are they removed from the reality in which they previously existed? Or rather, when they remove themselves from a specialism in order to better observe a reality, is perceptiveness, clarity easier to achieve? This attempt at balance is the nature of foreign, and any knowledge tour.

Perhaps the result of our journey into foreign resulted in an embodiment of ‘the other’.

In order to work productively in a given context, the knowledge tourist has to concede the need for mutual influence.

Intervention cannot be avoided.

Rather, intervention is the centrepiece of what the knowledge tourist does in a foreign environment. The tension resides in the degree to which the outsider and their intervention – the imposition of a certain system of ideas upon place, people, existing systems – affect what already exists, either positively or to its detriment.

Memory spielen mit Florian Graf Vom Busten des Busters und zum wie, wo und dem warum des Bustens. Mit: BB und AHU.

Ein halbdunkler Raum in der beginnenden Abenddämmerung. Der Künstler Florian Graf nimmt Platz. Auf dem Tisch vor ihm liegen zehn umgedrehte Memorykarten. Das also wird hier gespielt! Graf raucht erst einmal eine Zigarette. Dann drückt er sie im Aschenbecher aus.

Schweigend beobachtet die Camenzind-Redaktion, wie Graf die erste Karte aufdeckt, sich selbst auf seinem Leuchtturm-Floss entdeckt und lacht. Die Karte wird wieder zugedeckt, weitere folgen. Die vierte Karte, die er aufdeckt, zeigt Aldo Rossi‘s ebenfalls schwimmendes „Teatro del Mondo“. Graf begreift sofort und lacht erneut.

▶ Florian Graf. - Darauf hat mich schon mal jemand angesprochen. Komischerweise habe ich aber niemals dran gedacht, als ich das Projekt machte. Im Übrigen ist das ja auch kein Leuchtturm, sondern eine Mischung aus Theater und Baptisterium. Bei mir ging es mehr darum, Orientierung zu geben. Ich habe geleuchtet, geblinkt und bin wieder verschwunden.

▷ Camenzind. – Du hast dieses BodenseeProjekt als Gast des Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen durchgeführt. Wie lange lief das Projekt? ▶ Insgesamt ein Jahr. Im Winter habe ich in einem Turm am Bodensee gewohnt, im Sommer

▷ Ich bekam neulich einen Brief zur Geburt unseres Sohnes. In dem Brief hiess es: „man muss ihm Wurzeln geben - und anschliessend Flügel.“

▶ So ist es doch eigentlich auch mit der Architektur. Und auch als Künstler muss man wissen, wo man die Wurzeln hat, man muss aber auch fliegen können. Eigentlich ist das immer eine ziemlich schizophrene Geschichte.

▷ Wann hast du eigentlich mit dem Fliegen angefangen?

Ich wurde gezogen.

Die Kunst muss von der Gesellschaft gezogen werden.

▶ Das kann man doch alles im Bodensee machen! Insbesondere, weil ich mich in internationalem Gewässer befunden habe.

Das ist ein Niemandsland, ein Utopia, ein Zwischenort, der nirgends dazugehört. Darin bin ich mit dem Leuchtturm herumgefahren und habe zeitweise Orientierung gegeben. Und sie dann wieder genommen.

▷ Wie hast du dich fortbewegt? ▶ Ich wurde gezogen. Die Kunst gibt ja vermeintlich Orientierung. Aber sie muss von der Gesellschaft gezogen werden.

▷ Was für eine Spur hast du mit dem Turm nach dir gezogen? ▶ Über die Sichtung wurde verschiedentlich in den Medien berichtet. Manche Leute haben sich auch überlegt, was der Leuchtturm bedeuten mag, und mir Gedichte und Briefe geschrieben.

▶ Um Raum für neue Präsenzen, für neue Geister zu schaffen. Dabei ist natürlich wichtig, welche Geister man bustet und für welche man Raum schafft. Eigentlich ist das die Frage des Künstlers. Graphenheim füllt den entstandenen Leerraum mit einem Narrativ. Er bustet aber nicht Geister, sondern andere Dinge, und ruft damit Geister hervor.

▷ Der Leuchtturm war also eher ein Ghost

▶ Zum Teil schon. Ich fände das Künstlerleben sehr gut, wenn keine Kunst, keine Ausstellungen und keine Kataloge produziert werden müssten. Graphenheim macht es genau so. Insofern spiele ich Olf Graphenheim, bin er aber natürlich auch. Auch bei Joaquin Phoenix - den Film habe ich übrigens erst später gesehen - ist man

▶ Als Künstler ist man nicht frei. Man erhält die Rolle des Künstlers. Diese Rolle versucht man so authentisch wie möglich zu spielen. Es ist eine Freiheitsrolle, die trotzdem aber ein gewisses Verantwortungsgefühl beinhaltet, denn es geht ja um Aufklärung und Mündigkeit.

Mein Leuchtturm-Projekt hatte „Light“ im Namen, was sowohl „Licht“ wie auch „Leicht“ bedeutet. Diese Leichtigkeit, die man herstellt, kann auch ganz schön schwer werden. Denn sie führt zu einer Verantwortung in dem Sinne, dass man alleine dafür verantwortlich ist, was man macht.

Als Künstler ist man nicht frei. Man spielt die Rolle des Künstlers.

▷ Sind die Kriterien dafür jemals wirklich ganz klar offengelegt? ▶ Nein, ich denke, das wird man nie wirklich verstehen. Für mich jedenfalls stellt sich das à la Goethe dar: Die zwei Dinge, die ich nie verstehen werde, sind der Sternenhimmel und mein eigenes moralisches System, weil es so komplex ist. Aber, ich glaube dass man als Künstler nicht nur versucht zu busten, sondern auch versucht, gewisse Geister hervorzurufen. Und da gibt es, glaube ich, gute und schlechte Geister. Mit denen ist man in Kontakt. Welchen man Raum gibt, ist eine wichtige Entscheidung.

▷ Inwieweit kann man das überhaupt im Vorhinein steuern?

eine eigentliche Nicht-Ausstellung gemacht, um die herum sie aber eine riesige Geschichte aufgebaut haben, inklusive Katalog. Am Ende geht es darum, dass die Räume so normal wie möglich temperiert werden.

▶ Meist sind das kleine Tagesentscheidungen. Irgendwann baut man sich ein grösseres System auf, ganz planen kann man das aber nicht. Insofern weiss ich nicht, welche Geister man in sich und den Kunstwerken wohnen lässt und welche Gedanken und Geister man selber bewohnt.

Das ändert sich auch je nachdem, was im Leben so passiert.

▶ Raumkonditionierung, schön. Ich persönlich liebe Museen, weil sie so eine gute Luft haben. Museen haben perfekte Luftfeuchtigkeit, perfekte Temperatur, perfekte Lichtsituationen.

Der perfekte Raum. Deswegen gehe ich gerne dorthin. Natürlich gibt es in Museen manchmal auch gute Kunst. Vor allem aber kann ich dort gut denken. Von dem her ist es auch ganz sinnvoll, was Art & Language mit ihrer Installation gemacht haben, weil sie die Ablenkung durch die Kunst ausgeschaltet haben.

▷ Ist das für dich auch ein wichtiges Thema? ▶ Ja, Luft interessiert mich auch. Es gibt einen Film mit Olf Graphenheim, der „Air“ heisst.

Ich liebe Museen. Sie haben perfekte Luft, ▷ Um von Kunst leben zu können, muss man viel für Auf- Temperatur und Licht. merksamkeit arbeiten. Bedingt das auch, dass du Projekte gleichzeitig bearbeiten musst?

▶ Ich versuche das zu vermeiden, aber es kommt schon vor.

▷ In diesem Film nimmt Graphenheim am Ende ein Gebäude weg und es bleibt - Luft. ▶ Und diesen leeren Luftraum kann der Betrachter dann nutzen und aufladen, wie er will.

▷ Meinst du, das Sujet des Durchatmens könnte bei dir in der Zukunft öfter auftauchen, oder braucht man das nur einmal?

▷ Kommen die Geister sich dann in die Quere? ▶ Nein, sie sind eher Begleiter. Es handelt sich eher um ein Übersichtsproblem. Der Stress erhöht sich, je mehr Projekte man gleichzeitig bearbeitet. Um Übersicht zu erhalten, muss man übersehen lernen. Ich übersehe zwar ungern, weiss aber, dass man sich verliert, wenn man alles aufnehmen und sehen will.

Das Busters-Interview ▶ Es kann gut sein, dass ich das noch öfter mache. Das Kunst-machen ist eine ungeheuere konstruktive Sache. Man ist immer konstruktiv, und das Destruktive kommt viel zu kurz.

Manchmal muss man diese destruktiven Kräfte aber auch nutzen, damit sie sich nicht anstauen.

▷ Dann haben die Architekten aber ein echtes Problem!

▶ Das kann man wohl sagen. Gordon MattaClark war eigentlich ein Architekt, hat die Architektur aber erst mal zerschnitten.

▷ Das kenne ich aus dem Baupraktikum: Es tat richtig gut, mal eine Wand einzureissen.

▶ Ja, denn die Architektur hat einerseits etwas Bergendes und Behütendes, ist aber auch beengend.

Auch mein Leuchtturm war beengend. Meist schreibt die Architektur vor, wo man durchzugehen hat und wie. Wenn das einem aber widerspricht, kann man richtig aggressiv werden.

Manchmal muss man destruktive Kräfte auch entladen...

▷ Hat das nicht auch mit

dem nächsten Paar - Lebbeus Woods‘ Zeichnung und deiner Serie „Extensions“ - zu tun?

Die Extensions sind kurz nach deinem Architekturstudium entstanden. War das auch ein Befreiungsschlag, nach der ETH, die so etwas ja eigentlich nicht zulässt?

zu ihm ins Büro gegangen bin und nach wie vor nur eine A4Skizze vorgezeigt habe, hat er gesagt: „Sie hat der heilige Geist getroffen!“ Ich bin dann wieder gegangen, war weiter im Kurs, und habe das Projekt so beendet, wie man das bei ihm macht. Es ist immer die Frage, wann man sich von etwas löst und befreit, und wann man es mitmacht.

▷ Die Frage ist also die, ob man einem Konflikt aus dem Weg geht oder ob er produktiv

▶ Ja, genau.

▷ Wie war das während des Studiums, hast du da denn mal versucht auszubrechen?

▶ Ich hatte eigentlich fast mit jedem Professor erhebliche Auseinandersetzungen. Bei Miroslav Šik war es am extremsten. Anfangs habe ich mich seinem klar strukturierten Programm völlig widersetzt. Šik hat dann ein Ultimatum gestellt. Nach Pfingsten hatte ich in sein Büro zu kommen und sollte ihm alles vorstellen, was er forderte. Sonst drohte er mir mit dem Rauswurf aus dem Kurs. Als ich dann nach Pfingsten

Vielleicht hat dieses Aushalten von Konflikten auch mit dem Aspekt des Übens zu tun und du wurdest da mit einer Art Urinstinkt geimpft? ▶ Ja. Das hat ja sehr viel mit inneren Konflikten, dem inneren Schweinehund, den eigenen Geistern, innen, über- und neben-Ichs zu tun, mit denen man sich auseinandersetzen muss.

▷ Wenn man von Über-Ichs spricht, kommt

mir eine andere Art des Bustens in den Sinn, des Bustens von sich selbst. In gewisser Weise macht man das ja bei der Psychoanalyse.

Und es soll Künstler geben, die eine vertiefte Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst bewusst vermeiden, weil sie Angst haben, dass ihnen die Kreativität ausgetrieben werden könnte.

▶ Es kommt darauf an, was man da bustet, wenn man sich selbst bustet. Es gibt ein Buch vom New Yorker Künstler Seth Price über den Versuch unsichtbar zu werden, das jetzt neu aufgelegt wurde. Folgt man diesem Buch, löscht man sich selber aus. Bas Jan Ader ist mit seinem Boot auf See gegangen und ist nie wieder zurückgekehrt. Er wurde als „conceptual romanticist“ deklariert und hat sich selber ausgelöscht. Wenn man sich auf diese Art und Weise bustet, kann man natürlich auch keine Kunst mehr machen.

▶ Kreative Prozesse werden dadurch nicht zerstört, es sei denn, man übertreibt es mit der Selbstreflexion und betrachtet sich nur noch von aussen. Das kann schon gefährlich sein. Denn dann läuft man in Gefahr, nichts mehr zu tun, weil man nicht mehr aktiv ist, sondern nur noch reflektiert. Dann ist die Poesis weg, die immer auch mit dem Akt, der Handlung zu tun hat, im Gegensatz zum Wissenschaftlichen und der Analyse.

▷ Willst du das letzte Pärchen anschauen Bladen und „Well-come“!?

▶ Bladen, ja der Bladen. [alle lachen] Ich finde Bladen einen richtig guten Künstler. Aus meiner Sicht hat er die minimal art viel interessanter weiterentwickelt als andere, prominentere Vertreter dieser Richtung. Auch Bladen habe ich erst per Zufall kennen gelernt, nachdem ich mein Projekt „Well-come“ gemacht habe.

An dieser Stelle können mit der Skulptur auch Parallelen aufgebaut werden. In diesem Zusammenhang interessiert mich nicht immer nur der Körper, sondern mindestens gleichwertig die Raumhaltigkeit.

Ich glaube, dass Selbsterkenntnis für Nieman▷ Bewohnst du deswegen den schlecht ist. deine Skulpturen?

▷ Aber Selbsterkenntnis ist nicht schädlich? ▶ Ich glaube Selbsterkenntnis ist für keinen Menschen schädlich. Momentan wird ja die Beschäftigung mit sich selbst ein bisschen ins pejorativ-negative gerückt und als egoistisch begriffen. Ich glaube aber, dass sie nur hilft.

Das griechische Gnothi seauton, also erkenne Dich selbst, war beispielsweie auch Thema der Essays von Montaigne. Und meine Kunstwerke sind in gewissem Sinne auch Essays. Ich glaube, dass Selbsterkenntnis unterbewertet wird und dass die Welt besser wäre, wenn die Leute generell mehr Selbstreflexion betreiben würden.

▷ Ist die Selbstreflexion nicht auch schädlich für den Künstler?

oft

▶ Ja. Auch minimalistische Skulpturen haben einen Innenraum. Aber darüber denkt niemand nach. Die Skulpturen erscheinen meist als rein monolithische Sache.

Bei Bladen erahnt man manchmal das Innen, herkömmlich sind Skulpturen aber massiv. Die Freiheitsstatue ist zum Beispiel auch hohl. Ich würde übrigens gerne mal ein Projekt machen und mich eine Woche in der Freiheitsstatue, also in der Freiheit, einschliessen lassen.

▷ Wie war es denn, in einer Kirche zu wohnen?

▶ Kloster und Kirche der Abbatiale de Bellelay wurden von Napoleon entweiht bzw. geschlossen und dienten seitdem verschiedenen Zwecken, so auch als Jungeninternat. Die Anlage ist dann irgendwann zerfallen und wurde in den 1950er Jahren wieder renoviert. Jetzt ist im ehemaligen Kloster eine psychiatrische Klinik

Das Busters-Interview ▷ Das sieht man ja hier in der Schweiz nicht so viel. ▶ Man sieht hier überhaupt sehr wenig Wahnsinnige. Das wird alles versteckt, und wenn es ausbricht, weggesperrt.

▷ Siehst du darin ungenutztes Potenzial?

mit geschlossener Anstalt untergebracht.

▷ Hat es in der Kirche noch gespukt? ▶ Nein. Ich habe nachts aber die Schreie aus der Klinik mit zwanzig Sekunden Nachhallzeit gehört.

▶ Klar. In Basel vermisse ich viele Leute, die nicht ganz der Norm entsprechen. Früher gab es ganz viele von denen. Einer brüllte mit dem Megaphon die Preise aller Geschäfte durch die Strassen oder kam nachts mal kurz in ein Café und brüllte dort ein Rilke-Gedicht vor. Der war toll. Die Leute haben sich aber über ihn beklagt. Ich weiss nicht, ob es diese interessanten Figuren nicht mehr gibt oder ob sie einfach weggeschafft wurden. Diese Leute sind meist friedfertige Menschen und von guten Geistern beseelt. In der Psychiatrie sitzen aber natürlich auch andere Leute ein.

In Basel vermisse ich viele Leute, die nicht der Norm entsprechen.

▷ Eigentlich ja ein oldschoolAnsatz - raus auf‘s Land mit den Verrückten.

▶ In unserer Gesellschaft werden diese Leute ja mehr und mehr in Heterotopien gesperrt werden.

Oft ist das eher schade. Denn mich interessieren Folies und auch Folia, der Wahnsinn.

▷ Wir finden dich auch ein bisschen wahnsinnig. Die Frisur hilft da natürlich sehr. ▶ [lacht]

▷ Mit was hast du dich denn am meisten identifiziert? Wahnsinn oder Jungeninternat? ▶ Mit beidem. Und natürlich auch mit dem Priester. Es gibt einige Künstler, die eigentlich Priester werden wollten, zum Beispiel van Gogh. Van Gogh hat auch auf der Strasse gepredigt.

▷ Wie geht es denn jetzt weiter bei dir?

▶ Weiss ich nicht. Ich gehe jetzt nach Rom. Alle schweigen und denken an Rom. Inzwischen ist es stockfinster. Die Zigarette leuchtet noch ein letztes Mal auf, dann ist Florian Graf verschwunden. Hoffentlich nicht für immer. Danke für das Interview!
