Remuda Arabians

Bill Lee & Judyann Lockhart 1545 Reservoir Rd, Penticton BC V2A 8T3 26 Canadian Arabian Horse News • 2013250.492.6908

Remuda Arabians’ Justifyablee Lace + All breeders have a place in their hearts for the horses they produce, but there’s a special place for the extraordinary ones that come along every so often. In the spring of 2007, deep in B.C.’s Okanagan wine country, Remuda Arabian’s Bill Lee and Judyann Lockhart welcomed a bay filly that would fit that special place to a tee. Bill and Judy have been involved with Arabians for over 40 years, a life-long passion. “As breeders, we’ve always wanted to produce pretty horses, but also performance horses,” says Bill. Judy’s loved the Varian horses forever and focused on incorporating those bloodlines whenever she could. They’ve bred mares to Desperado V and Sundance Kid V, the latter producing the black mare Midnight Lace out of their Pesniar daughter, Tsaritza. In 2006, when choosing a match for Midnight Lace, the beauty of Justify caught their eye, not to mention his size and pedigree. They were rewarded the following year with a feisty bay filly. Justifyablee Lace was everything they had hoped for – pretty, athletic and loaded with personality. As a youngster, she had a playpen next to the indoor arena and when she was turned into the arena with her mom, the antics would start. “While the mare puttered around, Lace would come in like a rocket, bucking and kicking and doing handstands in the middle,” recalls Bill with amusement. “She got very used to being with us and always got to being in our pocket.” She was an easy horse to work with, and Bill and Judy found that they could pretty much do anything with her. It’s easy to tell that she was an absolute joy for them. Even before she hit the ring, the filly was turning heads. A local artist travelling by the farm saw Lace in one of the paddocks and decided she had to paint the filly. Copies of the painting were sold at notable events such as the Spruce Meadows’ Masters. Lace had her showring debut as a yearling, winning

Top 5 in the Sweepstakes Halter class at Region 5. As a 2-year-old, she garnered a Regional halter championship with Chris Peeler in 2009. This was a special win as it was the first Regional Championship for the Remuda breeding program. Lace didn’t start formal training under saddle until the fall of 2011 when she was sent to Washington with Cheryl Fletcher of Silver Aspen Ranch. “Cheryl had her about two months when she suggested Scottsdale,” Bill recalls. It was a bit of a surprise to Bill and Judy. Not knowing if she was ready or what to expect, they were thrilled when she took home Top Ten in the PB Hunter Pleasure Jr. Horse class (3rd out of 23), a first in Maiden Mares and two more fourth place ribbons in the division. Even after the success at Scottsdale, it was still a bit surreal for Bill and Judy to see Lace doing so well in the ring, but the wins kept coming. Lace won 11 straight Class A classes, was Champion at Region 7 (Unanimous) and Region 4, Reserve at Region 5 and then earned back to back Top Ten honours at Canadian and US Nationals in the Jr. Horse class with Cheryl. “We couldn’t believe it when she was 4th overall out of 46 horses (at U.S.),” says Bill. “We were so happy and excited. Cheryl did one wickedly good job.” Bill admits that when Lace won her Maiden class in Scottsdale, he was in tears. But this whole show season has been over the top. Both Bill and Judy had always thought the horse was pretty good, but they credit Cheryl for bringing it all out. Shortly after U.S. Nationals, Jusifyablee Lace found a new show home with Jody and Emma Freeland. Bill and Judy are really looking forward to seeing her in the ring with her new owners. “We are thrilled that they have her,” says Bill, adding that if they enjoy continued success with her, that will be the icing on the cake.

To say that Andy Sellman of Argent Farms had a particularly good year is a bit of an understatement. As Arabian Horse World reports, “In 2012, Andrew was on the lead of four National Champion Stallions in four countries: Australian Champion Stallion Guiliano for Mulawa Arabian Stud (picutred), Canadian Champion Stallion LD Pistal for Carl and Christine Roizner, US National Champion Stallion Pyro Thyme SA for Claire and Margaret Larson, and Brazilian Champion Stallion Vulcano HVP for the Vulcano Alliance.” Rumor has it there was also an impromptu ride-off between Andy and his groom on two park horses after the last class Saturday night at Canadian Nationals... No word as to who won that one.

GH Markaine

Bred by Frances and John Fischer, this year’s Western Canadian Breeders Champion Stallion carries a good bit of home-grown breeding in his blood – Fischers stood GH Markaine’s grandsire GH Venture, sire of Enjoue, for many years. Enjoue had only three registered foals over her lifetime but all three won at Canadian Nationals this year – GH Markaine went Top Ten in Arabian Stallions and Arabian Futurity Colts, full brother GH Maryn won in-hand open Gelding Championships at both Canadian and U.S. Nationals, and GH Marcheline (Mariachi WA) was a Top Ten Hunter Pleasure Jr Horse.

32

After placing in open classes at Scottsdale and a Reserve Championship at Region 5, Fischers decided GH Markaine would have a chance to prove himself as a sire. He bred 10 mares in 2011 and 15 mares in 2012. Fran says his foal crop this year “was outstanding. Beautiful faces and eyes, size and great temperaments like their daddy. It’s a testament to his trainability and what a great mind he has – John and I did all his fitting for Canada and we’re pretty old boots. We are eagerly awaiting his 2013 foal crop and this years’ foas at the shows. Thank you to all the people who believed in him and we wish all success.”

Megan Francis, owner of Lazy Ewe Ranch in Saskatchewan, had an extraordinary year. With a passion for reining, this small Saskatchewan breeder has made her own road towards a run for the roses – and it hasn’t been an easy one. The single mom of two has had to put the work in where it counts. “Every one has struggles; it’s how you react to them that will dictate your successes,” says Megan. “If you believe in dreams and work towards your goals one step at a time, you will reach them.” In 2012, her achievements tallied up to include

US National Champion Arabian Reining NonPro Limit and Top Tens in the purebred NonPro Intermediate and Reining AAOTR aboard her chestnut gelding LE Indian Outlaw. Megan has been breeding for many years and although she gets some help starting colts, she doesn’t have a full time coach or trainer that she works with over the show season. After several years of seeing horses from her breeding program enjoy success with their owners at Regional, National and Scottsdale shows, Megan finally had the chance to win with one of her own at the highest levels.

2012SHOWCASE Sport Horse Nationals in Lexington, KY. Don Stine photo.

Driving Norman By Kevin Johnson i have always been in awe of horsemen… Watching the many talented riders I see at shows and riding with some of them in class, I have always felt privileged to be part of the passion. One area that has interested me since I was very young has been the art of driving. My grandfather had a team of heavy horses that he used for chores around the farm which included getting firewood and collecting sap from his grove of maple trees for syrup in the spring. As we trudged with big pails from tree to tree, filling our buckets and pushing our way through deep snow back to the sleigh, he would call the team ahead and as if by remote control they would slowly walk until he called to them to stop, and we would empty our pails into the large tank they were pulling. That memory has never left me. Zoom ahead to the 2011 Sport Horse Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky. I was determined not to miss this show and for the first time my riding partner Norman (Pageant++++//) stayed at home and I went as a spectator. I was curious to watch the wide assortment of driving classes including the Obstacle Class, Reinsmanship, Gamblers Choice and one that had me delirious with “want to do it,” the Drive & Ride class. In the Drive & Ride class, horses show in harness for the first half of the class, then everyone is lined up, and horses are unharnessed and tacked up to ride the rest of the class under saddle. WOW!! I was hooked. When I got back from SHN, I began

a campaign to introduce Norman to driving with Todd Ehret, the most tolerate and talented trainer I know! I was bound and determined to learn how drive and to show in one of those classes. Todd started working with Norman for driving in the later part of 2011. The plan was to practice showing him in some “A” classes before Nationals. Fortunately, SHN waived the point requirements to show in 2012 – we never made it to a Class A show because of my work schedule, but continued to practice regularly. Thus, Norman’s inaugural class was with Todd at SHN in Idaho where they showed to a Top Ten in Reinsmanship! Driving seems to be in Norman’s blood and he has adapted extremely well to it – in his second class (my first) we went Reserve National Champion in the Drive & Ride class. Driving is certainly a different experience from riding under saddle. You cannot use your body to guide the horse; it’s all in the hands with gentle direction and encouragement from the driving whip. This is the beginning of a new chapter for Norman and I as we have recently learned that there will be sport horse driving classes at the February 2013 Scottsdale Show and we intend to show!! Thank you to many of the important people in my life, especially my wife Leigh, the Ehrets, the Bickfords and the real rock star – Norman. You are the best!! Let the fun continue!!

Faith’s story is very much one of family! Her gelding ‘Curt’ was bred by her grandparents, Ed and Pat Galloway of Rocking Bar Ranch, and was raised and trained by Faith’s mom, Kim Seward. Faith and Curt have been getting better as a team every year, but this year’s Canadian Nationals was their show. Photo: Jeff Janson

Youth SHAKE IT UP BABY+ Natalie Alves and Shake It Up Baby+ (“Stella”) had an exciting first year of showing together. At Region 3 they were Champions in ATR Side Saddle and Reserve Champions in CEP, Show Hack, and Native Costume. The highlight of the show came in the Open CEP – Natalie and Stella went Reserve to trainer Todd Hickerson who happened to be riding Stella’s full brother! Canadian Nationals brought the pair a Top 3 spot in the JTR CEP with a 1st on the cards. A beautiful ride in the JOTR 17 & Under CEP earned the pair a Reserve National Championship. When asked how she feels about her show season, Natalie replies, “The biggest thing I have learned is that there’s more to ‘achievements’ than the ribbons, roses, high points, and titles. It’s the journey getting there, the lessons learned, and the joy of success. I am so lucky to have experienced the highs and lows of competing on such an amazing circuit full of talented horses and riders.”

Bright City Lights & Sheila Goertz Breeding your own horse and then riding it to a Championship title is a dream most breeders. Sheila and Wally Goertz were absolutely elated when Sheila piloted their big chestnut gelding Bright City Lights to unanimous roses in the HA Hunter AAOTR40 & Over. Spectators were treated not only to a great ride, but afterwards to Wally park trotting through the ring for the win shot. It was a fun moment. This was on the heels of a Region 17 near-sweep, with three Championships and a Top 5 having gone home with the pair just weeks earlier. Christy Egan of Arabian Horse Global stopped the Goertz’s outside the ring for an interview. You didn’t need to hear the dialogue to know exactly what they were telling the audience!

Emma is a member of the Canadian team who won the gold medal at the 2012 North American

Young Riders Endurance Championships and is currently planning on participating at the 2013 World event in France. In addition to the performances, volunteers in the Arabian booth were busy handing out thank-you bags in the EquiMania exhibit to 600 eager children. Our very popular teacher packets, containing Arabian activity books and Arabian storybooks, were also well received. It was a wonderful chance to share stories about these fabulous horses with the many visitors to the booth as well as for city folk eager to meet these beautiful horses and see how gentle, willing and intelligent they are.

What is an Arabian Horse? From the ancient deserts of the Middle East evolved the oldest known breed of riding horse – the Arabian. For thousands of years, these horses lived among the desert Bedouins tribes of the Arabian peninsula, bred as war mounts for long treks and quick forays into enemy camps. The harsh desert climate helped the Arabian evolve its large lung capacity, incredible endurance, and exceptional soundness. Because the Bedouins shared food, water, and shelter with their horses, traits such as gentleness, a close affinity to man and high intelligence were greatly prized. The Arabian was the original source of quality and speed. Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Alexander the Great and George Washington all rode Arabians. Arabian blood has contributed to the formation and refinement of virtually all modern breeds of horses. Today, the Arabian’s incredible energy and gentle disposition allow riders to excel in many diverse sports and activities. Arabians are excellent trail and show ring companions. English and western pleasure, cutting, reining, jumping and dressage are just a few of the disciplines Arabians compete in. As an endurance horse, the Arabian has no equal. Horses who compete at the top levels of endurance riding are nearly all Arabians. If you want a companion who will be your partner in adventure or competition – and your friend for life – then an Arabian may be the horse for you.
