This isn’t Karen Caughell’s first trip around the ring. The dream started with her first show ring experience in 1982; she’s been chasing the ribbons ever since. In 1991, Karen purchased her first show mare, Fire Foxx+/. Foxx was bred to Desperado V, producing Fire Majik+// (‘Maggie’), a familiar sight on the Region 17 circuit for many years. With Maggie ready to retire, Karen started to look for a replacement. Maggie produced a lovely prospect, Voodoo Majik, but a bad-luck injury ended the young gelding’s career as a four-year-old. A purchased prospect mare also went unsound – however, that mare introduced Karen and husband Tony to JT Keller, who was working at The Brass Ring at the time.
“I saw KM Palermo+ at U.S. Nationals,” says Karen, “so I found JT and asked him if he’d try out a horse with me. We didn’t purchase Palermo then, but we did the following February [2013]. I’ve ridden him several times since then. He’s a total sweetheart – you’d never know he’s a stallion. Great temprament, loves people, likes treats and scratches.” “Each show horse I’ve had has been better than the last,” adds Karen. “But this horse – he’s a whole new level. I was looking for a show horse for me to ride, and he’s developed into something so much more.” With a stellar show career already on record, it’s fair to say this stallion’s future is looking bright. It just goes to show – some things happen for a reason, and others are worth waiting for! Canadian Arabian Horse News • january 2015

A commonly used phrase is ‘great things come in small packages,’ and that can certainly be said for the champion-producing breeding program of Salisbury Farms. Salisbury Farms is the creation of Robert (Bob) Sproule of Sherwood Park, Alberta, located just outside of Edmonton. The farm is named after the family greenhouse business, Salisbury Greenhouse, which has been synonymous with the Sproule family in the county of Strathcona for many generations. Bob’s foray into the horse business has been a passion that has now extended over 50 years. His first memories are of the Standardbred racehorses that were boarded on his family’s farm. He says with a laugh that he spent more time in the air or on the ground than on their backs. Not to age Bob, but his first Arabian mares were named ‘Peggy’ and ‘Sue’ after the Buddy Holly song “Peggy Sue.” His passion for Arabian horses was formed back then and continues to burn bright today. Today, Salisbury is home to approximately 15 Arabian horses, but over his lifetime, Bob has owned over 100 registered Arabians and bred more than 50 himself.

Cyty Heat with Joe Reser Top Ten in Open Western Pleasure at Canadian Nationals.
He is a past President of the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry (CAHR) and currently sits as its treasurer. The CAHR might not be in existence today if it hadn’t been for the foresight of Bob and another past President, Gerry Levasseur. Both gentlemen had the intuition to purchase the property on which today’s CAHR is housed. In these challenging times, the Registry is in a unique position – it owns its own premises and they are almost paid off, a feat for which CAHR members certainly owe a debt of gratitude. Anyone who knows Bob understands quickly that anything he undertakes is done with thought and attention to detail. Fifteen years after the selection of Cyty Heat as Salisbury Farms’ herd sire, the stallion’s reputation – first established for successful, amateur-friendly show horses, and now as a broodmare sire – has forged a path to success for this small farm. Although owned by Bob, Salisbury Farms has always seemed to be a joint effort as Bob has surrounded himself with trusted confidants who share his passion for the Arabian horse. In the earlier years, Bob and Pat McKeown, also of Sherwood Park, would be seen at most shows hanging over the rail, watching the classes

intently. It was Pat’s El Hilal son Pad-OMac Hilan that gave Bob his appreciation for the beauty of the El Hilal lines. In 2005 a young lady by the name of Dana Romijn came to buy the Cyty Heat son Cyty Gaits+ from Salisbury; her name has since become synonymous with the farm. To add some insight as to how Cyty Heat came to be one of the most consistent performance horse sires in Canada, let’s step back to the year 2000. Salisbury had been searching for a new show horse and herd sire for quite some time. The objective was a stallion that would be suitable for the show ring in Western Pleasure, and hopefully be a sire of future champions. After an exhausting search, their quest lead them to RO Lervick Arabians of Stanwood, Washington. At Lervick’s, Bob came upon a two-year-old colt by none other than the National-winning performance and halter stallion Cytosk+++/ and out of one of the typiest halter mares in the industry,

Arabay Hilana, a beautiful dappled-bay daughter of El Hilal. Once the deal was struck, Cyty Heat was on his way to Canada. Upon his arrival in his new home, Cyty Heat (or “Marcus” as he is affectionately known around the barn) was placed in training with Carla Jackson, who trained at Whelihan Arabians at the time. He went on to win regional and national titles such as Top Ten at the 2007 Canadian Nationals in Ladies’ Western Pleasure Sidesaddle. After a brief retirement from the show ring, it was decided to send Marcus, age 12, to Joe Reser of Setting Sun Stables in Wakarusa, Indiana, where he yet again came out to win Top Ten in Open Western Pleasure at Canadian Nationals. Between stints in the show ring, Marcus was quietly going about siring national and regional winners in halter, western pleasure, western sidesaddle, hunter pleasure, English sidesaddle and sport horse under saddle. Not quite content to let him finish out his days in the pasture, in 2012 Bob and Dana set out once more

to bring Marcus back to the show ring at age 15. In the spring of that year, Bob and Dana moved Marcus to Michelle Hansen’s Spiritwood Farms. During the spring and early summer of 2012, Dana did all the conditioning and training herself and came back out with a brilliant performance in which some would say Cyty Heat had never looked better. With Dana at the reins, Cyty Heat went on to win Region 17 Reserve Champion Open Western Pleasure and Canadian National Top Ten Western Pleasure ATR 19-39. The future has never looked brighter as Cyty Heat continues to sire performance stars for Salisbury Farms and their clients. Salisbury has fostered a flourishing working relationship with Joe and Michele Reser of Setting Sun Stables, using stars such as Monticello V and Poco Van Star II on Cyty Heat daughters with remarkable results. These exciting youngsters will be hitting the show ring in the years to come, continuing on with the next generation of versatile performance horses from Salisbury Farms.

While today’s embryo transfer technology
may allow our best mares a greater number of foals per year, there is no guaranteed formula for producing a National Champion. Having a foal out of RD Fabreanna is, however, perhaps as close as one could get. From a total of ten purebred offspring, four of RD Fabreanna’s foals were National champions in 2014, making her #1 Leading Dam of National Halter Winners in North America for 2014 (Arabian Horse World). Bred by Murray & Shirley Popplewell, RD Fabreanna was the first home-bred National Champion of Rae-Dawn Arabians, winning U.S. Nationals Yearling Filly in 2007 for new owners Claire & Margaret Larson. This win marked the first time in the history of the show that a Canadianbred filly had captured a U.S. National Championship. Donna Molta Bella SVA, undefeated on the international circuit, was this year’s Salon du Cheval World Champion Jr Filly in Paris. Her story is heart-warming – Claire and Margaret Larson donated one of RD Fabreanna’s embryo rights for auction during the Scottsdale Open House tour. The embryo right sold to Dan and Maureen Grossman (owners of DA Valentino) for $43,000, with every cent going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

- CAHR President’s Message -
Promoting the Arabian at Home and Beyond Happy New Year, fellow CAHR members.
It’s been a couple of years since I wrote a ‘President’s Message’ and I realize how quickly time has passed since my last communication with you all. As I enter my 6th year of being president, I look back in retrospect how the years have unfolded. We have had many challenges at CAHR and in the Arabian horse community in general. Arabian horse breeding in North America has unfortunately continued to decline year over year. Luckily, though, here in Canada we have seen some stabilization. On a positive note, we have seen a definite rise in imports as Canadians have taken the opportunity to purchase good quality show and breeding stock south of the border. On a disappointing note, the CAHR was named in a lawsuit between two Quebec breeders in which we had to defend our position not to transfer and register horses which were involved in this legal dispute. Through no fault of our own, CAHR incurred a hefty legal bill for upholding our rules. Some of this was due to the fact that we had to retain counsel in both Alberta and Quebec. While the dispute has now been resolved, the CAHR is still left to pick up the financial legal burden. I can’t stress enough, when you buy or lease a horse, “treat it like a business” and draw up properly worded contracts! 2014 saw a change in our executive. We would like to thank outgoing vice president Hilda Markis from Quebec for all her hard work and dedication these past years and welcome Bob Wasylyk from Saskatchewan as the new Vice President. When I became President, one of my main goals was to drive the CAHR into more of a leadership role in Canada with regards to the promotion of the Canadian-bred and/or Canadian-owned Arabian horse. Due to the selfless commitment of many volunteers, exhibitors and sponsors, the development of the Western Canadian Arabian Breeders Show as a standalone show and public showcase has certainly gained momentum. It has become a platform with which to introduce new people to the Arabian horse and to reinforce camaraderie and fun at our shows.
For the last two years in Saskatoon, we have hosted our “Arabian Showcase” on Saturday night, and it has been received to standing-room-only crowds. 2014 saw the inclusion of Gary Millar’s Discover Arabian Horses and the Arabian Horse Literacy Program into our show week. Gary, Lori Fisher of Discover Arabian Horses, and myself took Gary’s purebred Arabian gelding “Socks” to meet 300-400 children at several Saskatoon schools. We then proceeded to downtown Saskatoon during lunch hour and introduced the Arabian horse to the community. 2015 marks our third consecutive year in Saskatoon and hopefully we will continue on a path to broaden the scope of what a horse show can be. The final piece of the ‘Canadian Arabian Promotional’ puzzle I have initiated is the development of a member-sponsored CAHR hospitality booth at the 2015 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. This booth was made possible by the generous donations of several of our members and clubs including the Arizona Arabian Horse Association who graciously made room for us. We will be ringside out in the glorious Arizona sunshine at the Wendell Arena. We hope that this will become a meeting point for all Canadians who head south to enjoy these horses. Please stop by and introduce yourself to both Nicole Toren, our Registrar, and I, who will be in the booth on a regular basis. Until next time, here’s hoping for a prosperous 2015 for all Arabian horse owners and breeders throughout Canada and the world.
Tex Kam, CAHR President

U.S. Nationals
October 17-25, 2014 • Tulsa, OK
This year, Baahir El Marwan, owned by Bassam Al Saqran and handled by David Boggs, won the Purebred Stallions class. David also showed Wieza Mocy to the win in the Purebred Mares. Wieza Mocy is owned by Michalow State Stud but currently on lease to Janey Morse. The English division certainly didn’t disappoint. One of the most outstanding classes at the show was the HA English AAOTR 40 & Over. Winning unanimously was the sensational ERA Moonlight Serenade with James Driver; Lori Lawrence took Reserve aboard Eves Fire. Always exciting, the AEPA Arabian Horse Time $100,000 Arabian Futurity saw the roses and the big money go to Noble Ffyre and owners Maroon Fire Arabians with Joel Kiesner in the irons. Noble Finery, owned by Diane Comeau, earned Top Ten in the class with Carla Jackson up. Another great class was the Purebred Western Pleasure Open. Two black stallions – Zephyr, ridden by Jody Strand for Laura Koch, and Onyx A with Josh Quintus for Richard, Gail and Anne Whitaker – galloped out of the arena with the top honours respectively.

Canadian horses made their mark throughout the show including a unanimous Championship for KM Palermo+. This young stallion, owned by Karen and Tony Caughell, was shown to the win in the PB Western Junior Horse class by JT Keller. Taking home roses in halter was RD Texcello Bey and Claudinei Machado in the PB Futurity Geldings for Murray and Shirley Popplewell of RaeDawn Arabians. The young gelding is one of four horses that earned U.S. titles this year that were owned and bred by Rae-Dawn, all sired by Bey Ambition. Claudinei also showed Saaber Al Shahania+ to a Reserve in the Purebred 3-Year-Old Geldings for Lorne Robertson. In the Purebred Hunter division, Ashley Toye piloted her mare Parys WA to the Reserve in both the competitive Junior Horse and AAOTR 19-39. This horse was bred by Wunderbar Arabians and was one of two Canadian-owned horses sired by Mariachi WA to earn a title. For a complete Canadian list of wins, see p. 8.

“I’m No Angel++ has earned her Legion of Merit from the AHA, based on her performance points in distance riding. We were presented with the award at the Master Feeds Endurance ride, Sept. 13, 2014 at Cayuse Farms in Millbrook, ON. Presenting is Dr. Art King (right) and ride manager Bob Coleman (left). I am so proud of my mare. We competed our third 50 mile ride of the season and tied for 4th, earning us 3rd spot as AHA Champions.” - Linda Klarner
