The AHA has begun their implementation of the new horse registration system, which will include the CAHR’s data entry system. As a result of the change over, there will be a delay in all registry transactions until the new programs are installed. If you have any transactions that will be required for shows in May or early June, please contact the CAHR office for further instructions. Thank you for your patience during this upgrade!

New Look, New Logo The CAHR will be introducing a new Registry logo and a new look to our registration certificates this year. Watch for these exciting new changes over the next few weeks!

Canada’s 2010 WAHO Horse of the Year By Ashley Lauren Toye The Canadian Arabian Horse Registry would like to announce the recipient of the 2010 World Arabian Horse Organization Award; VLQ Friendly Fire+//, bred by Dr. Lorne and Vanessa Quartly of VLQ Ranch, Innisfail, AB. This purebred Arabian gelding exemplifies the athleticism, versatility and beauty that are the result of careful, thoughtful breeding practices. ‘Fireman,’ as he is known around the barn, has deeply rooted, multi-generational Canadian bloodlines. He is out of Canadian-bred mare Polka Jane (by Edytor (Kirkor x Edycja++) out of Baziks Polka (Gaypolka++ x Gezan’s Bazik, by Raseyn Gezan)) and sired by the Canadian-bred stallion Forelock’s Petja (Nagasaki AVS x Nesmejana AVS). His heritage is truly an exceptional example of Canada’s breeding program. Over the past two years Fireman has carved an extraordinary path, bringing home seven National Championships and three major awards! In 2009, Fireman was recognized by Equine Canada as the Breed Sport Purebred Arabian of the Year. In 2010 at eleven years old he was recognized by both the Arabian Horse Association, earning the AHA Legion of Excellence Award, and by the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry, with the Canadian WAHO Award. In 2009 and 2010 VLQ Friendly Fire+// and proud owner Allison Mostowich rode to the roses in the Purebred Arabian Reining AAOTR 18-39 at both the Canadian National and United States National Championships. Trainer LaRae Fletcher Powell added to these accomplishments with Championship honours in the Purebred Arabian Reining

The World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) Trophy is a perpetual award and is presented to an outstanding Purebred Arabian in each of fifty-nine member countries. Each WAHO Member Country chooses one living Arabian each year, bred and registered in that country and sired by a WAHO approved stallion. Ideally the selected Arabian is an ambassador for the breed. Open at both the 2009 and 2010 Canadian National Championships as well as the 2009 United States National Championships. In their first time competing at the Scottsdale Championship show, this incredible team has started off the 2011 show season with a bang, bringing home the Championship in Purebred Arabian Reining AAOTR 18-39! At the Scottsdale Championships this past February, the Mostowich family held a small reception at the Silver Aspen Ranch stalls. CAHR Director Mike Steenhart of Morning Sun Arabians presented the WAHO plaque to Allison and Fireman. In attendance were his breeders, Dr. Lorne and Vanessa Quartly of VLQ Ranch, his former owners, Kevin and Nadine Cusack of Sandridge Arabians who bred and own his one and only son, working cow horse KC Rain N Fire, and many of our Canadian friends. Fireman was in fine form, shamelessly nuzzling LaRae Fletcher Powell, his current trainer, and making it quite clear he deserved all the attention. It has taken a village to achieve these accomplishments. Allison Mostowich gives sincere and heartfelt thanks to her family and many friends throughout the years. She is also grateful to Silver Aspen Ranch for their continued guidance, support and patience, to Ron and Darlene for teaching her the love of reining, and to Nadine and Kevin for allowing her to own such an amazing animal.

2010 US NATIONALS In the January, 2011 issue, Bill and Rowena Nichols’ gelding CH Easter Knight+++/ (US National Reserve Champion Saddle/ Pleasure Gelding AAOTH, pictured above) was incorrectly identified as CH Easter Parade. Our apologies! 2010 SPORT HORSE NATIONALS One omission to the results – MJ Wii Fit was Reserve National Champion in the HA 2-Year-Old Geldings, shown by Brenda Driediger and owned and bred by Lorne Robertson. Lorne notes that this was the fifth National winner (four of which were a Championship or Reserve) out of their CAHR Arabian mare Solnika by Soldat. Three of Solnika’s offspring were shown at this year’s Sport Horse Nationals: MJ Dot Com+, Fantasque+//, and MJ Wii Fit.

CA TESTING UPDATE

The Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) Project Update from the Arabian Horse Foundation and the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory is posted on the Foundation’s website: http://www.arabianhorsefoundation.org/news.html#ref1 This update has some important and exciting news for the advancement of CA research, as a potential causative mutation has been identified. While some work is currently being done to validate the location of the CA gene, identification of this potential causative mutation has helped to strengthen the CA test and move it from a marker based screening test to a more fully developed DNA test. As additional updates become available on this work, the information will be posted. The update also includes some additional information about the CA test and ongoing CA research.

MEMORIAL OF JANET M. ODDY By Peter G. Oddy

Janet Marie Oddy, 81 years old, prolific Arabian Horse breeder and lover of life, humor and all creatures, passed away March 13, 2011, in British Columbia after a very brief battle with an abdominal blood clot. Janet is established as one of the largest Arabian Horse breeders of her time, Oddy’s Skyline Arabians Ltd., with offspring spread throughout Canada and the United States. Her concentration was in the English Crabbet and Davenport lines, with a side-line run of Polish. Raseyn Gezan, a mainstay stallion, sired 140 purebreds alone from 1960 to 1980. He was a Top Ten Stallion winner and Grand Champion. A few products of Janet’s breeding program were Jinnyi’s Ferda, Concorde Gezan, Shammra, Wafa El Shammar, Rifala’s Naseem, Rif Alazar, Kahrabaye, La Golindrina, Jericho Antez, Taffy, Skowronek’s Jinnyi, Taffy’s Ferliti, Cinderallah, Abu Farwas Rawia, Brusally El Azrak, Azcindi, Azulique, Jaleure, Jawarr, Mauhin, Vask, Falk and Rivaska. Janet’s father was a cereal chemist and her doting mother was a popular vocalist of her time who performed on radio and in the Saint Olaf’s Choir. She wanted Janet to be a concert pianist; Janet, however, had other ideas. Her commitment to horses began in earnest at a young age of 13 when her family lived in Scarboro Heights, a neighborhood of comfortable, well-kept larger homes close to the downtown area of Calgary. Janet viewed her surroundings as assets to convert into horse currency! During the Calgary Stampede in 1942, she rented her room to visitors and made $46.00, enough to purchase her first

horse, Midnight. To the uneasy horror of Janet’s mother, Midnight lived in the detached garage. Flicka was Janet’s next purchase, and at 17 her bedroom furniture was traded for Scheherazade, a lovely horse of ordinary pedigree and named for the heroine of 1001 Arabian Nights. The purchase of Scheherazade marked Arabian horses as the first of Janet’s two lifelong passions, the other being a very handsome and ambitious young man named Edwin “Bud” Oddy. Janet loved Arabians because she loved their souls and admired their beauty. She was like one of the herd, a respected horse that just happened to have two legs rather than four. She was also very tough, taking hard knocks from horses well into her ‘70’s. Janet was famous for treating horses and herself, claiming to have been a doctor in a past life. She was eccentric, stubborn and the center of attention. She would often say “Arabvoir” (in tribute to her horses, combining “Arab” and the French goodbye “au Continued next page...

Continued from previous page.... revoir”), rather than simply hello or goodbye. She loved to cook for her visitors, not for the good food, but because the visitors would stay longer and she enjoyed their company. She fervently believed the mantra, “if a little is good, a lot is excellent.” Her chicken cacciatore recipe involved marinating at room temperature for days. By God’s grace, the chicken was quite excellent and no one ever fell ill. All creatures loved her but she best loved horses. She fed bears and lived to tell about it. Deer came to her retirement ranch. Chucky the chicken (no relation to her cacciatore) adored her. Janet was forgiving in biblical proportions. A proud, sweet loving grey mare and proud stallion had the privilege of Janet’s fine care for many years, with daily grain, a comfortable stable, and the best of alfalfa hay. These horses were sent to a ranch in exchange for a promise to respect and care for the magnificent animals (Janet’s requirements for placing horses in another home). Instead, the mare was left to starve to death on the frozen Alberta plain during the worst of winter. The stallion survived and was returned to Janet, close to death, but was recuperated back to health. Yet Janet forgave the responsible party. The abused stallion and mare were two of the “Rescue 100” horses from the nationally televised story in 2008. From that incident, the Rescue 100 Foundation was born, dedicated to offering care, love and healing to animals that survive abuse. Janet was born in Calgary, Alberta, died in Kamloops, British Columbia, and is survived by Bud, her husband of 57 years; sons Peter and Ken, and daughter Kristi Sindt; hundreds of horse friends; and a very large herd of four-legged creatures scattered throughout our great nations. Arabvoir, Janet. We shall see you in heaven! In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Rescue 100 Foundation at www. Rescue100.ca. Please send your questions, comments, pictures or stories to Peter G. Oddy, at Oddy@OddyAssociates.com. Our family would love to hear from you. Editor’s note: To read more of the remarkable story of Oddy’s Skyline Arabians, visit the Archives section of our website, www.CanadianArabian.com. The August 2009 article “No Greater Love: Oddy’s Skyline Arabians” details Bud and Janet’s fifty year breeding program.

Scottsdale 2011 They might call it a horse show, but the event that takes place at Westworld in Scottsdale, AZ is more than just a show – not many events are able to live up to the extravaganza that the Arizona Arabian Horse Association puts on each year in February. If you have ever had the chance to attend the Scottsdale Arabian Horse show, you’ll undoubtedly understand. The world-class horses, the unique shopping expos, the quality and quantity of classes in a superb venue, and a great destination location makes this a premier event. This year’s show saw 2,262 horses entered to compete in more than 785 classes and championships held over ten days. This year’s weather was not without its challenges, however; an unusually cold and wet ten days caused chaos for some of the outdoor classes. The weather stormed in so forcefully over the first weekend that cameras in the Wendell couldn’t keep broadcasting, and reports of lightning strikes amid the high winds and rain had exhibitors and spectators alike taking cover. Despite having to relocate a few classes, crews worked madly each time the weather threw a curve ball and had things back in order in record time. This year’s Supreme Championship went to senior stallion LD Pistal, shown by Bob Boggs, owned by Felix Cantu. Halter classes were not only abundant but lengthy, and there were a lot of competititors for the top titles. This

year’s classes showcased some fantastic young stallions. Exciting up-and-comer Famoso WA, owned by Wunderbar Arabians, won the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction 3-Year-Old Colts ATH with Maegan Friesen, and a Top Ten in 3-Year-Old Colts with Sandro Pinha. The 4-Year-Old Stallions class went to the exotic Abha Qatar, owned by HH Prince Abdullah Bin Fahad Al Saud, shown to the win by Michael Byatt. Unanimous Champion in the 5-Year-Old Stallions class was Bey Ambition, owned by Rae-Dawn Arabians, shown by Claudinei Machado. Bey Ambition’s son RD Habanero had a unanimous win of his own with owner/breeder Murray Popplewell in Jr Champion Colts AOTH; taking the title in the Jr Champion Fillies AOTH was Porsha DMA with owner/breeder Karen Cowderoy of BC. This exciting filly was recently sold to S & E Jones of the UK and was on her way to the Vegas show. The beautiful RA Nefertiti with Greg Knowles showing for Warren Fertig took home the Reserve Championship in the PB Classic 4-Year-Old Mares. Junior handler Kenneth McDonald won a Reserve Champion Gelding JTH

title with Bargellos Razoul, owned by Ernest Patterson. Chance to Jam+// took home the HA Stock/Hunter Sr. Championship with Cheryl Fletcher for Ashley Toye, as well as several nice ribbons in the Hunters and Side Saddle. Maegan Friesen had another exciting win in the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Auction classes, riding Sabrina WA to a Championship in the Western Pleasure Maturity for owners Ed & Laura Friesen of Saskatoon, SK. Vice Regent SM, owned by Sandi Nickolls, had a fantastic show in the Sport Horse division. The gelding won a number of his qualifiers and earned Championships in the HA SH Under Saddle AATR with Erin Oberman, a Reserve in the Open with Brenda Driediger, and a Championship in the HA Sport Horse In Hand Geldings. If you are an English junkie, you might have been glued to your seat (or to the live feed) watching Jim Lowe and Jim Stachowski trade off the top spots in the HA English and HA Park Championships on some truly incredible performance horses. Lowe won the English Pleasure aboard Papa Razzi, with Stachowski winning the Park on Goombay Smash.

A fabulous final night? That’s an understatement. The Saturday evening performance began with the Farnam Gamblers Choice, an Open Jumpers class, won by EVG Allon Dunit and Kristin Hardin with Canada’s Jessica Antonsen aboard Spot On placing 3rd. The final night also saw JT Kellar and HR El Kareem win a tough purebred Western Open amongst deep competition. In Liberty, one of the breed’s signature classes, the gorgeous grey stallion Maddox Van Ryad earned his Championship as he cruised the ring with “Dirty Bit” by the Black Eyed Peas pumping over the speakers. His moves seemed timed to the music, and if he thought the crowd wasn’t loud enough already, he would make a pass looking into the stands as if to say, “Come on, people... Let’s hear it!” The louder they were, the bigger he got and the more he gave, coming calmly back to his handler when the music ended. Clearly he had as much fun in the ring as those who were watching him.
