- 2016 WAHO Horse of the Year -

The World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) Trophy is a perpetual award provided by WAHO to each member country, to be presented to an outstanding Arabian of their choosing. The winner must be a living, purebred Arabian in the CAHR stud book, bred in and currently living in Canada, which has in some way been an excellent ambassador for the breed, or achieved same through its immediate progeny.

2001 Bay Gelding (The Pioneer V x Le Fire Lace) Bred by Sylvia and Martin Lenzner • Owned by Leigh and Kevin Johnston

Canada’s 2016 WAHO Horse of the Year, incredibly versatile Pageant++++// (aka “Norman”), has competed in Sport Horse Under Saddle, In-Hand, Hunter Pleasure, Carriage Pleasure Driving, Dressage, Ride & Drive and Country Pleasure Driving. His show record includes championships at Scottsdale, Sporthorse and Canadian Nationals; many of his Sport Horse Nationals Top Tens were accomplished in classes of over 50 horses. Outside the show ring, he is a willing and trustworthy mount out on the trails. To witness Pageant++++// in harness and owner Kevin Johnston at the reins is to witness them doing what they love best. Whether for competition or participating in a show’s opening ceremonies, as they have at Scottsdale and the Western Canadian Breeders Championships, they are a pleasure to watch.

Most notably, Pageant++++// and Kevin have been wonderful ambassadors for the breed. With their contagious, upbeat personalities and positive energy at equine events large and small, they embrace the true meaning of sportsmanship and teamwork. Kevin was introduced to Pageant++++// by his trainer Todd Ehret in 2004, after having been involved with horses for only two years. The gelding stole Kevin’s heart and ended up teaching him some of the most important lessons a rider can learn. “One of my favourite things about Norman is his quirky personality,” admits Kevin. “I had to step out of my comfort zone, accept that I wasn’t running a machine and I wasn’t necessarily in charge or in control.” He laughs. “I came to love and respect this horse because we negotiate our work. I learned teamwork in the truest sense.” Canadian Arabian Horse News • january 2016

- In Memoriam -

Allan Rogers June 9, 1930 - May 23, 2015 The Canadian Arabian Horse Registry would like to honour the life of Allan Rogers, one of the true icons of the Arabian breed in Canada, who passed away on May 23, 2015. As a teenager, Allan bought his first racehorse, Rocky Wrangler, for $25.00 with tack. “The horse was a known and feared outlaw, who had already crippled a man so badly that he had to sell his entire farm,” recalls Allan’s daughter, Roxanne. “Dad turned him around and won many races with him, and would hire him out as a bucking horse, which he was very successful at. At the end of the event, Dad would jump on and gallop him home easily while bewildered and bruised cowboys looked on.” That was the type of horseman Allan Rogers was. As a fifth-generation horseman, Allan made his name showing Arabian horses in the 1960s, formative years for the Arabian breed in Canada. In the early ‘60s he worked for the famous oilman Paul Guthrie of Triple A Ranches in Edmonton, Alta. During his tenure there he garnered many championships with the Triple A horses. As the word of his wins spread, establishing Allan as a household name within Arabian training circles in Western Canada, he caught the attention of P.B. Williamson who, with his wife Lois, had established the Double U Ranch of Kelowna, B.C. At the Double U, Allan showed HMR Hallanys Talab to many victories and the stallion became the first Legion of Merit winner in Canada. While on a buying trip to the Gainey Ranch in Minnesota, Allan discovered a yearling colt from Poland who was very different than the Crabbet-bred horses of the day. The chestnut yearling colt was *Gaypolka++, a son of *Pietuszok and the Witraz daughter *Caliope, and was not for sale. Upon Allan’s insistence, however, a deal was struck with the Gaineys, and *Gaypolka++ headed north to Kelowna, B.C. where he went on to be a National-winning stallion in both halter and performance and sired horses which took the Double U in a whole new direction. At about the same time in 1964, a newly imported mare from Poland became the talk of the Northwest show circuit – *Dornaba by *Naborr. *Dornaba was imported by Dr. Howard Kale of Seattle, Washington and was again a complete standout to the mares of the time. Armed with the knowledge that the likes of *Dornaba and *Gaypolka++ were being produced, in late 1964 Mr. Williamson and Allan set out for Poland and hand-picked what was described as “some of the most notable horses ever exported from Poland” (Neil Wood, The Polish Arabian Horse in North America, 1937-1991). AFIRE BEY V

26 July 1985 - 25 November 2015 HUCKLEBERRY BEY++ × AUTUMN FIRE

As 2015 came to a close, the Arabian horse community mourned the loss of the great Afire Bey V. It's no understatement to say Afire Bey V had a tremendous influence on the breed, most notably in the English performance division, stamping his offspring with his trademark refined neck and animated movement. At the time of his death, Afire Bey V has been the #1 Leading Sire of Halter and Performance and Performance for the 16th consecutive year at the US Nationals and for the 11th consecutive year at the Canadian Nationals. One of his most notable sons was Baske Afire, whose influence in Canada can be felt through his son, Mariachi WA of Wunderbar Arabians.

(Allan Rogers) Continued from previous page... The importation included two stallions, *Barysz and *Kirkor, and eight mares, namely, the Kaszmir *Arwistawa, the Czort daughter *Esterka, the Faher daughter *Arnika, the *Pietuszok daughters *Harpia, *Harda, *Rusalkaa, and the *Naborr daughters *Gorcyzca and *Edycja. Each of these horses left a distinguished mark on the Arabian breed through their offspring. The crown jewel in the lot was *Arwistawa, who went on to be the first double National Champion in the history of the breed, winning both the Canadian and U.S. National Mare Championship titles in 1965 (defeating *Dornaba for the U.S. title). Allan left the Double U Ranch in the late 1960s, but continued training Arabians. He was reunited with some of his beloved Double U Arabians in 1970, after the Williamsons divorced and dispersed their herd, in part due the tragic death of their son Johnny. Lois Williamson entrusted the care of a few key individuals, including *Gaypolka and *Arwistawa, to the Rogers family where both horses lived out their lives. As Allan’s focus shifted from the show ring to the racetrack, his passion for Thoroughbred racehorses flourished. Allan took on many great horses throughout the course of his life including the Native Dancer son Native Talent. He later bred the winner of the

He managed Rocky Point Farms for Calvin Adcock in the 1970s, Horizon Farms in the ‘80s, and finally his own family-run farm in the ‘90s, Kaszmir Stud and Racing Stables. Although he had a great passion for Thoroughbreds, Allan’s great loves were always *Gaypolka++ and *Arwistawa. The bloodlines of many of the original Double U Ranch horses lives on in the Rogers Arabian breeding program today. Ontario Hosts FEI North American Endurance Team Challenge On August 21, 2015, endurance riders and their crews from across the U.S. and Canada experienced the thrill and camaraderie of team competition during the FEI North American Endurance Team Challenge (NAETC), in Millbrook, Ontario. NAETC is held every odd numbered year, the last being in Florida in 2013. This is the first time it has been held in Canada. It is normally a 160 km 3* FEI event, but this year was reduced to a 120 km 2* event in order to attract more participants. Three U.S. and two Canadian zones fielded teams of three to five riders, with those not on a team allowed to ride for individual medals. A total of 35 riders competed in the senior division. “For all of us who love the sport of endurance, NAETC is a premier event, bringing together the best of North American horses and riders,” said Bob Coleman, president of the organizing committee. Together with his wife Michelle Bignell, Coleabove Wendy MacCoubrey and man hosted the event at AM Mysterious Mopsa his Cayuse Creek Ranch, which borders the 11,000acre Ganaraska Forest in southern Ontario. After several hot and humid days, followed by heavy rain the day before the event, skies cleared and temperatures cooled to provide near-perfect weather on ride day. Several riders were pulled at the first vet check, including three of the four horses on the USA Northeast team. This meant all members of the second USA Northeast team would need to complete in order for their zone to have a chance at a team medal. Rising to this challenge, Meg Sleeper was 1st to finish in a ride time of 6:50:34, earning individual gold. Jeremy Reynolds of USA Southeast completed five minutes later in 2nd place, followed by Melody Blittersdorf of USA Southeast in 3rd and Tom Hagis of USA Northeast in 4th. Bob Gielen and Wendy McCoubrey of Canada East completed 5th and 6th, followed by Sleeper’s teammates Stemmler and Gardener, who completed in 7th and 8th place to cinch a team gold for their zone. The Canada East team of Bob Gielen, Wendy MacCoubrey, Dessia Miller and Michelle Watling earned team silver, just minutes ahead of USA Central’s team of Cody Boysen, Jessica Lemmons, Melissa Coolich, Alicia Mansuetti and Darolyn Butler.

High vet score went to MacCoubrey’s mount, AM Mysterious Mopsa, while Sleeper’s home-bred Anglo-Arabian, Shyrocco Rimbaud, earned Best Condition. In the Junior/Young Rider Division, Hanna Weightman, riding Creator’s Gold Bandit owned by Valerie Kanavy, was first in the young riders division. Heather Nielsen of Canada West finished 2nd and Ainsley Suskey of USA Central was 3rd. The USA combined team of Hanna Weightman, Kelsey Russell, Cassandra Roberts, Ainsley Suskey and Elish Connor earned junior team gold and Canada West earned junior team silver. Ainsley Suskey’s mount GDE Sweete Legacy garnered both high vet score and best condition. modest beginnings ‘Let's get a couple of horses for some relaxation and downtime,’ was the original thought behind Rae-Dawn Arabians in 1997. Nearly twenty years later, with two farms operating in two different countries, a stallion that’s a household name in the Arabian business, and almost twenty Rae-Dawn home-bred National Champions, it’s a bit more than a pastime... one could say it’s a juggernaut. Although Rae-Dawn’s current Saskatoon, SK and Scottsdale, AZ operations are a far cry from the couple of backyard horses envisioned by Murray and Shirley nearly twenty years ago, the farm is truly a ‘LABOUR of LOVE’. Rae-Dawn Arabians, as with most aspirations in life, started modestly with the purchase of those couple of horses the Popplewells originally wanted. They soon found themselves searching out local breeding operations to learn more about Arabians, and an early visit to Wunderbar Arabians in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan ignited their passion for the purebred Arabian halter horse. As with many newly minted breed enthusiasts, the Popplewells began attending as many Arabian shows as they could to learn as much as possible. They purchased local mares and picked high-end National-caliber stallions to breed to them – their initial success was encouraging, with several Regional champions and National Top Tens along the way. In 2007 Rae-Dawn landed its first big win as the breeders of RD Fabreanna (Falcon BHF x GF Simply Magic (x Magic Dream CAHR)). Although they had sold Fabreanna earlier in the summer, that fall she went on to win U.S. National Champion Yearling Sweepstakes Filly under the expert showmanship of Andy Sellman from Argent Farms in Wisconsin. That win catapulted the Rae-Dawn name into the national spotlight. Those in the know began making their way to Saskatoon to see what else was brewing at this farm up north in Canada. Murray’s natural flare for showmanship didn’t hurt matters – on occasion, when Canadian Nationals was held in Regina, he would fly a select group of industry insiders to Rae-Dawn for an exclusive showing. But it wasn’t just top trainers and breeders who were welcome at the farm – it’s a Rae-Dawn tradition to hold an annual open house where the public is welcome. The tradition began with Rae-Dawn’s Arabian Nights at the Saskatoon farm and was later extended to the Scottsdale farm as part of the New Year’s celebrations in Arizona.

a horse named ambition Though the show ring wins were heating up for the Popplewells, the game changer for Rae-Dawn happened in the spring of 2008. They’d never really envisioned owning and standing a stallion of their own, but that all changed at the Las Vegas World Cup, when Rae-Dawn’s resident trainer Claudinei Machado spotted a two-year-old colt in the warmup ring – Bey Ambition, being handled by Gerard Paty. Bey Ambition was a relative unknown at the time, but trainers from all over the world were mesmerized by his entrance. By the time the bay stallion came out of the ring, he was owned by the Popplewells, and one could say they are still writing the history books with that purchase. Over the past several years, Bey has gone on to win many National awards but perhaps the sweetest win was his first National Championship– the 2009 U.S. National’s Futurity Colt class in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Many high-profile trainers attempted to get Bey Ambition into their training barn over the course of 2009, but true to their word, the Popplewells chose to leave Bey with Rae-Dawn’s own trainer, Claudinei. Murray firmly said that a top ten win with Claudinei would mean more than a National Championship with any outside trainer. Going into that ring in Tulsa, Bey Ambition, though a strong contender all year, was certainly not the odds-on favorite to win. His main competition was one of the most highly touted stallions of the day. Bey’s entrance with Claudinei into the showring that cool October afternoon was almost ethereal... from the moment they entered the Pavillion, it can simply be said that Bey Ambition owned it. Claudinei stood back and let him do what he does best – TROT – SNORT – and BLOW – showing off his athleticism and exuberance. The end result was a Unanimous National Championship that left the competition in the dust. It was Claudinei’s first National Championship win in North America, and the Popplewells, true to their word, bought Claudinei a red Mustang automobile, a deal agreed on many years prior. Rae-Dawn returned to Tulsa in 2010 and repeated their earlier Yearling Sweepstakes win, this time with home-bred filly RD Marciena, whom they’d sold to Brazilian breeder Luciano Cury prior to the show. RD Marciena was sired by QR Marc and out of an embryo purchased from U.S. National Champion Mare NW Siena Psyche. The list of Rae-Dawn National Champions now numbers close to twenty and continues to grow.

new directions Spending time with the Popplewells makes you quick to realize that neither Murray nor Shirley are content to sit on the sidelines and let others do the work and decision-making for them. Both are keen learners and very hands on. Shirley oversees most of the breeding and foaling out duties, and it’s not uncommon to find them both working hard at the farm and on the showgrounds ensuring every detail is just right. The success that Rae-Dawn has experienced did not come without an incredible amount of hard work and tenacity from the entire Rae-Dawn team in both countries. Murray and Shirley like to say that the Rae-Dawn horses ‘shine from the inside out,’ and that type of thinking is the result of a lot of planning – from conceptualizing the planned breedings, to intensive nutritional consultation with experts, to surrounding themselves with knowledgeable trainers who have the horses’ best interests at heart. With that in mind, Rae-Dawn has recently expanded their team, led by longtime head trainer Claudinei Machado of Brazil, adding a new Scottsdale-based trainer, Bruno Guiraldelli (also from Brazil), and in November, 2015, Western performance trainer Colby Powell (son of trainer LaRae Fletcher-Powell). Now more than ever, moving into 2016, Rae-Dawn has become synonymous with friendliness, passion, character, and an undeniable winning attitude. By Tex Kam.

The loss of a breed icon is always heartfelt in the Arabian community and with that note Canada bids a fond farewell to Allionce+/. He was surely was one of the winningest Arabian stallions to set foot in Canada. Allionce+/ was one of those rare stallions who bridged the gap between halter and performance. In halter, he was a U.S. National Futurity Colt Top Ten and a Canadian Nationals Futurity Colt Reserve Champion with Steve Heathcott. In the performance division, he went on to win a Canadian National Championship in Junior English Pleasure and was twice United States National Reserve Champion in Junior English Pleasure. All of his performance accolades were with Jim Lowe in the irons. True to his pedigree, Allionce+/ was brave and noble spirit even under adversity. Although an infection claimed the sight in his right eye in the mid-1990’s, Allionce+/ resumed his career, winning Scottsdale and Regional championships in English Pleasure and Pleasure Driving as well as a U.S. National Championship in Informal Combination.

Not content with being a superstar showhorse, he made his mark as a sire of National Winners across North America in all divisions of halter and performance, both main ring and sport horse. Allionce+/ was bred by Colonial Wood Arabians and owned for most of his life by Toni Wessell of Southern California. Wessell remarked that, “Owning Allionce has been the benchmark of my success as an Arabian breeder.” In late 2007 he found his way to Canada. It was agreed between Jim Lowe, Toni Wessell and Todd and Andrea Ehret that Allionce+/ would have an excellent retirement home at Ehret Equine, under the continued ownership of Toni Wessell Ehret, a fervent supporter of Allionce+/ for many years, helped the stallion find his second wind as a sire of note, breeding and siring more National winners, all while becoming a part of the Ehret family in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. There is no doubt that Allionce+/ will be missed by all who knew him. Canadian Arabian Horse News • january 2016

The CAHR will be sponsoring a booth at Scottsdale again this year – be sure to stop in and say hi! CAHR sends tremendous thanks to our sponsors and volunteers, without whom none of this would happen. A special shoutout to Mike Steenhart for transporting booth materials and helping with set-up.

above: Angela Lyons & Kathy Padgham capture Reserve and a Unanimous Championship in the Select class at Region 17.

Kathy Padgham and daughter Angela Lyons are no strangers to the show ring. Long-time Morgan enthusiasts, they stepped up their breeding program in 2001 with the purchase of Morgan stallion Northern Exposure. Numerous wins followed – a World Championship, three Reserves, numerous Top Tens, and Equine Canada’s Horse of the Year award. But in 2012, the family decided to make the move to Arabians. “I love the Morgan breed,” says Kathy. “There are some great horses out there – but not a lot in Alberta. We wanted to go where there would be more opportunities for showing and breeding.” Avonroy Arabians began with two purebred mares, Valora CBA (DA Valentino) and Fancy Rain Dancer (Sundance Kid V). Valora CBA, who had captured a U.S. National Top Ten in the Western Pleasure Futurity with Joe Reser the previous fall, went on to win Regional championships in Western Select, AOTR and AATR 40 & Over with Kathy. Valora is currently in foal to Khaberet PGA, a cross Kathy admits she’s really looking forward to. Angela, who represented Canada at the 2006 World Cup of Saddleseat Equitation, piloted Fancy Rain Dancer to accolades at Regionals, Scottsdale and Nationals, most notably two reserve wins in Western Select at Canadian Nationals and Scottsdale. The family loved Fancy so much that in 2013 they bought her dam, RDA Pfancy, and

bred her to Monticello V. The 2014 colt, Monnumentall, was purchased by Salisbury Farms. Avonroy has produced two half-Arab foals out of Paint mare One Lucky Doll (APHA): Khontraband AVR (Khontroversy PGA+//), purchased by Darlene Brouwer as a weanling and slated to hit the Western pleasure ring in 2016, and Stormborne AVR, an exceptional 2015 filly by Bey Ambition. Avonroy recently acquired the half-Arab mare SS Conchos Starlette (WC Concho), bred by Setting Sun Stables. They’ve also been enjoying a warm welcome on the Arabian show circuit. “The people are very helpful,” says Kathy. “We’ve been fortunate to have help from some of the top U.S. trainers when we see them at horse shows with horses we’ve purchased from them. It’s nice there are two national shows, and the judging standards are consistant – you know the way the western horse is supposed to move. And even though I don’t show in it at the moment, I think the sport horse division is great for the breed.” What’s next for Avonroy? “I think we all dream big,” says Kathy “If we didn’t, we wouldn’t get anywhere. There’s that old saying: ‘Shoot for the moon; even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.’ I like that philosphy, but saying that, you need to have patience, determination and probably some luck to have your dreams come true.”

“Growing up in the Arabian horse community has been the greatest opportunity I could ever imagine...”

When Sydney Young got the call informing her that she had been chosen as the recipient of the 2015 AHA Youth of the Year award, she hung up the phone and cried. Then she sent a text to the caller just to be sure she wasn’t imagining it. It was an emotional achievement for the young woman from Sherwood Park, AB. The perpetual trophy, along with a $1000.00 scholarship were presented to Sydney this past fall, at the AHA National Convention. Accepting the award, Sydney’s sentiments portrayed how much she appreciated and recognized the efforts of those who helped her get to this point. It was a long list of thank-you’s. “I look out (there) …and I see old friends and new ones, all of who have been a part of shaping who I am today. Growing up in the Arabian horse community has been the greatest opportunity I could ever imagine and for that I thank every single person in this room… I am proud to call you my teammates and friends.” Her words give you an idea of the kind of young woman this is and precisely why she was chosen for this award. Sydney has been a dedicated and active member of the Arabian community for several years. She served as the Region 17 Youth Vice Director from 2010 to 2013 and Youth Director since 2014. Her involvement saw the creation of a Youth Regional Show committee and the implementation of numerous fundraisers, including a Trainer Egg & Spoon Jackpot, silent auction, dunk tank and t-shirt sponsorship. The funds raised are earmarked to support future youth scholarships in the region. Sydney was most recently elected to the Treasurer’s position within the AHYA and is the Canadian Nationals Youth Committee Chair. Her role as volunteer and mentor isn’t limited to the horse world. She has also been involved with Hearts in Action where she led a group of 10-year-olds with disabilities. Sydney adds to this numerous achievements in the show ring with her horses. She has successfully competed regionally, nationally and at Scottsdale, most recently earning a Reserve Championship in the PB Hunter JTR 14-18 and two additional Top Tens at Canadian Nationals with her gelding Texxas. Sydney noted how fortunate she has been to not only pursue her passion for horses, but also that she has had the chance to travel the world and learn about other cultures. In her experiences abroad she has visited over 20 different countries including three months spent in Southeast Asia, traveling and studying international business, English, world issues and physical education. She also has plans her to pursue her other passion – the fashion industry. Having participated in the Western Canada Fashion Week, she intends to put on her own show this coming fall.

makes a comeback after colic surgery

with Natalie Alves Canadian Nationals 2015 will forever hold a deep meaning for Natalie Alves, an 18-year-old rider from Mission, British Columbia. “I will remember this show fondly,” says Natalie, “not because of the ribbons, but because of the journey taken to get there.” Natalie describes her 10-year-old Half-Arabian mare Shake It Up Baby+// (aka “Stella”) as “the kind of show horse most people dream about. With talent to spare, a work ethic like no other, and a personality that makes being in her presence a privilege, Stella performs in and out of the show ring with style and charisma. She is truly oneof-a-kind.” In March 2015, after returning home from the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, Stella had to overcome her greatest obstacle yet – emergency colic surgery. “It is devastating to watch an animal so full of spirit being completely drained of the will to continue to fight,” says Natalie. Stella’s life was in the good hands of Dr. Bob Moats of Clover Valley Veterinary Hospital in Langley BC, a veterinarian with many years of experience with colic cases. Approximately seven hours after a surgery that Dr. Moats described as ‘text-book’, Stella was up and about. Ninety days of stall rest followed. After missing out on most of the show season with Stella, Natalie was excited to ride Stella again. Dr. Moats gave the mare a clean bill of health and encouraged Natalie to begin riding her horse as if she had never been sick. “The first ride I took on Stella was incredibly effortless and I was thrilled to realize my charismatic, athletic girl was the same as ever!” says Natalie. A mere six weeks later, they were on their way to Manitoba. “To be able to compete at all at Canadian Nationals 2015 was a gift, but to compete so successfully was more than I ever could have imagined,” explains Natalie. “Trotting into the arena on Stella was emotional each and every time because for the first time in my life it was not about the end result. Being on my horse at all was enough to give me the feeling of true joy. Stella has taught me the meaning of being grateful for every ride, and I thank her endlessly for that.”
