Region xvii Championships July 21-26, 2014 • Stampede Park, Calgary AB
The Region 17 Championships
found a new home for 2014 – the brand new Agrium centre at the Stampede grounds in Calgary, Alberta. This impressive, state of the art arena was the backdrop for much of the show ring action over the week along with a considerable amount of media coverage. No less than 4 different TV stations sent reporters to cover the show and interview riders. This was a great opportunity to promote the Arabian and to showcase the camaraderie and excitement that happens at these events. A full slate of classes was run over the course of the week. This included the very well attended Dressage and Sport Horse classes that started off the show, and the show committee was pleased to be able to hold them all in the main ring. As with any new facility, there were a few wrinkles to iron out, but the general consensus was that this show was a lot of fun. From the Wednesday night exhibitor’s party hosted by the Calgary Stampede to the trainer egg and spoon, that saw most of the trainers and all three judges compete, it was an extremely enjoyable week. To top it all off, an additional $5,000 in prize money was awarded to randomly drawn classes throughout the week and the show committee did a number of prize draws during the show, including some for free tack stalls for the 2015 show. Here’s looking forward to next year!

Russian Revlution+// 1991-2014 (Amurath Baikal x Shades Of Summer Asha) Russian Revlution+//, aka “Louie” to all who knew and loved him, was bred by Vivianne & Diana MacDonald of Arthur, Ontario. Louie, ridden for many years by Shawn Wardell, was well-known on the Ontario Arabian sport horse circuit, winning many local and regional championships in over-fences classes. Louie’s lifetime wins include Top Tens at Sport Horse, Canadian and U.S. Nationals, plus two Canadian and one Sport Horse Reserve National Championship. At one point, Louie was sold to owners competing on the open circuit who weren’t interested in transferring his papers. He came up for sale again several years later, but by word of mouth his lineage had been forgotten – he was thought to possibly be an Arab/ Trakhener cross. Through serendipitous chance, Michael Yingbull, while visiting family in Ontario, took a lesson on Louie and fell in love. Michael and his wife Melissa bought Louie, and, determined to track down his papers, were told they should contact Allan Ehrlick. To their surprise, Allan not only remembered the horse, he had Louie’s papers on hand as he had helped with the original sale! After some back and forth with the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry, Louie’s status was reinstated and his Arabian horse show career resumed. In his later years, Louie enjoyed the company of first Sydney and then younger sister Brooke Loessin. He would first take care of Brooke in her walk/trot classes and, later in the day, win a championship or two with Sydney in the hunter ring. Louie’s wins culminated in back-to-back Overall Provincial Hunter Championships with Sydney in 2011, and in 2012 & 2013 with Brooke. “He was an amazing horse,” says the girls’ mother, Dawn Loessin. “He was a gentle soul who we sometimes called our grumpy grandpa, but he was entitled. He truly loved his job... and that was to fly over those fences!! Louie wasn’t just a horse. He was a true member of our family and we will miss him forever.”

On June 7 the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada took part in the 6th annual Toronto Horse Day. The event, hosted by the Ontario Equestrian Federation, takes place in downtown Toronto and is free to the public. Our breed ambassador, the elegant multi-champion purebred gelding Genuine Magic, owned by Shari & Dana Robbins of Burford, ON, loved the attention and stood for hours with his beautiful head over his stall door inviting people to pet him. Magic and Dana put on several Show Hack demonstrations throughout the day.

Booth volunteers Marg Murray and Jane Whitwell handed out hundreds of copies of the Arabian Horse Activity Book, Arabian horse magazines and club brochures. Also on display was an Arabian native costume and banners depicting the versatility of the breed. All contestants in the stick horse class received thank-you bags full of Arabian horse information and activity pages. We were fortunate to have OCTRA beside us promoting the many facets of distance riding. Glorious Song IA, owned by Phyllis & Solstice Pecile, demonstrated tack, trail safety and Ride ‘n’ Tie with Sarah Cuthbertson.

WWesternCCanadianBBreeders Championship Horse Show & Saturday Night Showcase
Thanks to a dedicated and innovative group of volunteers who decided to think outside the box, the Western Canadian Breeders Championships are setting the stage for a new kind of horse show experience. What started out as a successful first year for the Breeders as a stand alone show in 2013 continues to evolve as new ideas are added to the mix. The concept behind the new format is, in part, to make this show a sensational event for both exhibitors and spectators. At the forefront of this
whole endeavour is breed promotion. The need to attract new people to the industry and to encourage participation is something that has to be addressed and has become a major focus for the show committee. By Nicole Toren

Good promotion is a big part of bringing in spectators and the show was privy to coverage within the community from local and national media. In the week leading up to Breeders, CAHR president Tex Kam and Gary Millar of Discover Arabian Horses teamed up to do their part in promoting the event and introducing the public to the Arabian horse. With Gary’s purebred gelding Flash Alert (“Sox”) as their official mascot, they visited over 400 elementary school children at several different schools before hitting up downtown Saskatoon, greeting passers-by in front of the Sheraton and Delta Bessborough hotels. This was a personal, up close experience with an Arabian horse – that doesn’t happen every day, especially not in an urban setting. Huge thanks goes to volunteer Jenn Sharp for organizing the school events and media coverage. Without her expertise and input, much of the coverage the show gets would not happen. Jenn is on the WCB show commission and is also a show competitor! The Saturday evening Showcase extravaganza is a unique feature of the WCB show and is a crowd favou-

rite, drawing over 1000 spectators to the performance. The showcase runs for two hours and covers a wide range of exciting and educational material, with the horses as the main attraction. The program gives the audience a glimpse of the history of the breed, and demonstrates a variety of disciplines and activities that can be enjoyed with the Arabian horse. Some of it is just for the excitement and theatrical flair! This year’s performance included demonstrations of freestyle reining, trick horse maneuvers and a jumping presentation. The evening ended with the always enjoyable Liberty Jackpot class. This class is judged by the audience and the crowd fittingly chose Gary Millar’s entry, Sox, as the winner. Gary graciously donated the jackpot back to the show’s fundraising efforts for the Arabian Horseman’s Distress Fund. “This is what a horse show should look like… our judges commented that the show reminded them of Nationals back in the day. What a huge compliment,” says Tex. Looking forward, 2015 will bring more new ideas to help the show become bigger and better!

WCB Charity of Choice for 2014 The WCB chose the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund to be the charity of choice for this year. Unfortunately, the reality of the need for this charity hit very close to home for the Arabian community. Just prior to the commencement of the WCB show, longtime industry member and local horsewoman, Janice Tokar of F.I.T.T. Equine, lost her barn and several horses in a tragic fire. The AHDF is a fund set up to assist industry members in any kind of crisis. Through the generosity of everyone attending on Saturday evening, the show raised over $1000 for this worthy cause through the sale of raffle tickets and private donations. This amount was also matched by the show committee. For more information or to donate to this worthy cause, please visit the AHDF website at: www.arabianhorsemensdistressfund.com

Discovering Arabian Horses right: This photo of Gary and Sox appeared in Bridges, a weekly community newspaper published by The StarPhoenix, on June 25, 2014. www.thestarphoenix.com/bridges Photo: Michelle Berg below: Children petting Sox at a school visit.
This year the WCB show
committee partnered with Gary Millar of Discover Arabian Horses and The Arabian Horse Reading Literacy Project to promote awareness of the Arabian horse throughout the local Saskatoon community. In the week leading up to the show, Gary and his purebred Arabian gelding Flash Alert (affectionately known as ‘Sox’), CAHR president Tex Kam and volunteer assistant Lori Fischer visited hundreds children at their schools and met people on the street in downtown Saskatoon. They spent time in a number of different venues introducing Sox to the locals and giving them the chance to interact directly with the horse. It was an exciting opportunity for those who might otherwise never come in contact with these wonderful animals! The experience, however, was nothing new for Sox. He’s an ambassador for the Arabian Horse Reading Literacy Project, a program that aims to spark kids’ imaginations and encourage reading and creativity as they escape into a world of adventure through books. Teachers have the opportunity to design and implement cross-curriculum study that uses the Arabian horse as a catalyst for learning. For many kids, a visit to the farm to participate in a series of well-orga-
nized activities is their first time out of the city. A comment we hear kids say all the time is, “this is the best day of my life!” The experience is truly magical and it’s all because the horses are such amazing teachers. While the Arabian Horse Reading Literacy Project partners with schools, DiscoverArabianHorses.com is an online activity centre available to anyone interested in Arabian horses. “DiscoverArabianHorses.com is a personal web-based initiative to facilitate outreach and give new people a way to get involved with the Arabian horse and the Arabian horse industry,” explains Gary. The website provides all kinds of information about what it’s like to be an Arabian horse owner and encourages the public to consider an Arabian horse experience for their
family. There is an emphasis on the powerful emotional connection with horse involvement, including “20 Questions” from people involved in the industry describing how they first became involved with Arabians. Articles and activities for kids provide a comprehensive look at the Arabian horse and promote an active and healthy lifestyle. A quarterly newsletter is also available, filled with information for horse owners or future horse owners. The newsletter is distributed to over 1,200 Arabian owners across North America, who are encouraged to pass it on for outreach both personally and with clubs in their area. These riders have all worked hard to achieve this goal without ever losing sight of our primary value of protecting the welfare of our equine companions. We know that they will do an excellent job of representing Canada on the International scene, and we wish them every possible success.”
Terre O’Brennan, Chair Endurance Canada Committee
In the show horse world,
the versatile Arabian is represented in nearly every discipline and class in the show ring, and National Championships are recognized as the highest honor one can achieve. But in the sport of endurance racing, where Arabian horses dominate, the ultimate honor is to compete in the World Equestrian Games (WEG). Celebrated every four years and alternating with the Olympics, the World Equestrian Games are the biggest equestrian event in the world. This year’s event will be held in Normandy, France, from August 23 - September 7 as the finest athletes from 76 nations compete against each other in the eight official Fédération Equestre Internationale disciplines of jumping, dressage, eventing, driving, reining, vaulting, endurance and para-dressage. The Endurance competition will take place on Thursday, August 28 on a 160 km course through the French countryside, with a record 260 riders competing. The race will consist of six loops and a must-see will be the loop that runs along the stunningly beautiful Bay of Mont Saint Michel. Endurance riders are tested in their ability to set a pace against the clock, taking into consideration their horse’s fitness and ability as well as the weather, terrain and footing. In a race of this caliber, the crew plays a huge part in the success of the rider and the team. Canada’s riders will
be assisted by an army of support persons necessary in all aspects of the event – moving gear, looking after the horses, attending meetings and opening and closing ceremonies, and looking after the rider. It has been said that races can be lost “on the ground” which speaks to the the importance of the team crews. “We have an excellent team of athletes, grooms and team officials who have been working very hard to prepare for the big day on August 28th,” notes Chef d’Equip Maura Leahy. “All the athletes and horses will be in France by August 20th, which will give us eight days for our final preparations. We are anticipating great results from all of our Athletes and horse combinations, both as individuals and as a team.” This trip has been a long time in the making. The horses have been on the competition trail, travelling to local rides, into different provinces and into the US for several years to qualify and to keep the horses fit and peaking. We are looking forward to representing Canada, and doing well for our country.

Shorter rides, called Limited Distance rides, are organized for riders who are new to the sport and for young horses in training. Limited distance rides can range from 25 to 35 miles. Competitive Trail Riding (CTR) is an equestrian sport where riders cover a marked trail for a distance that is usually between 15 and 40 miles per day. Unlike endurance riding, factors other than speed are considered. Organized endurance riding began in 1955, when Wendell Robie and a group of equestrains rode from the Lake Tahoe area, across the Sierra Nevada Range to Auburn in under 24 hours – the first Tevis Cup.

Endurance Rides are races over a trail of 50 to 150 miles. Terrain can be varied and challenging. The events are commonly held over one to three days. Horses are checked by qualified veterinarians and judges before, during and after the ride.
Equine Canada and Endurance Canada are pleased to announce that the 2015 FEI Pan American Endurance Championships will be held in Millbrook, ON, at Cayuse Creek Ranch. The 120 km competition will be held in southern Ontario’s largest conservation area. The Ganaraska Forest has over 11,000 acres of treed area and over 600 km of trails. “The Organizing Committee is looking forward to hosting this prestigious event at Cayuse Creek Ranch,” said Bob Coleman, the Championships’ organizer. “It will be an honour to have some of the best endurance horses and riders from North, Central and South America at this event here in Ontario.” “This event will do much to promote this amazing equine sport, as well as highlight the athleticism of the Arabian horse,” continued Coleman. “I believe this is the best venue in Ontario for endurance racing with its wide selection of trails - from flat, sandy and fast to narrow, technical ones. Roadwork is minimal on the course, which is important for safety reasons.” The public can spectate free of charge at the Pan Am Endurance Championships, tentatively planned for the week of July 6, 2015 to correspond with 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

Sturgeon Creek Arabians’
Carl Fudge Honored for Outstanding Achievements in the Sport of Endurance Not everyone can say their home-bred Arabians have traveled the equivalent of once around the globe. Since their first foal crop in 1988, Sturgeon Creek Arabian-bred horses have covered 25,000 in endurance competiton miles – just a big farther than the circumference of the globe – with a remarkable 87% race completion rate. Carl studied Arabian breeding passionately, aided by generous advice from Pyatigorsk’s breeder, Dr. George Allen. When given the chance to stand Pyatigorsk at the farm, they jumped at the chance and Carl began to collect a herd of mares tailored to Pyatigorsk’s strengths as a sire. Today, SCA’s senior stallion is Philosophy, out of a Pyatigorsk daughter, sired by Pistaschio (*Salon), who set a track record. Philosophy’s full sister, Spirited Music, completed the gruelling 100-mile Tevis Cup. Carl is as passionate about the horses today as he was at the beginning of this amazing journey. At the recent Equine Canada Annual Convention in Winnipeg, Endurance Canada presented Carl with their new Award of Excellence for his ‘Exceptional Contribution to the Sport of Endurance,’ in recognition of his achievements and positive influence in the sport. “My dream has been shared by my family and my dear friends, Marilyn and Helios Hernandez, who have been my partners since the beginning nearly 30 years ago,” says Carl. “They have stuck by me through thick and through thin. They are special people, as is Dr. George Allen, my friend and mentor. Whenever I have needed his advice and counsel, George has been just a phone call away.” “It has truly been an incredible ride! We are now starting our second journey around the world!” Read the full SCA story online at www.CanadianArabian.com.
