RUMINATIONS by/par Russell Gammon Interim Manager / Directeur par intérim
YOUR JERSEY FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT Not long after returning to Jersey Canada on January 8, 2018, I noticed something that made me overflow with joy. It had been nearly six and a half years since I had wrapped up my previous time with Jersey Canada, and the large question that soon loomed in my head was: Who are all of these new people? Names that appeared to be “old hat” to Jersey staff were brand new to me. In short order I was elated, thrilled and delighted and well, you know me, tingling with excitement over how much the breed had grown! Just think of the number of dairy farm owners in Canada who were not engaged in processing Jersey milk a decade ago who are doing so today. Think of how their efforts make a strong point in the industry about the added value of Jersey milk! “And after all, the cow herself is not the product, the cow is the producer of the product”, which has real, and high, value. That’s a quote from a great passionate student of the breed, Ed Crotty, who once served US Jersey. It is certainly a dream of mine that the Jersey breed will soar far beyond the exciting accomplishments of recent times like: • Highest registrations since 1963, 55 years earlier, in 2018. • 14.3% of milk recorded herds in Canada contain Jerseys. In 2001 that figure read 4.4%. Jerseys are now in one of every seven milk recorded herds in Canada! • Registrations 62.5% higher and memberships 21.5% higher than a decade ago! Jersey classifications 56% higher than 2006, the first full year of the all breeds classification! The challenge today is to maintain the growth in numbers of new owners of Jerseys and new animals to register and record. As well, keep genetic progress and practical information on the breed flowing out, to keep those folks investigating Jerseys! Thanks to the Jersey Canada Board for the opportunity to fill in. Jersey Canada members, you are served by a very engaged board who understand their role to protect and direct, and grow, the association and the breed. You have a blockbuster staff, which has shifted a fair bit in the past year. Kathryn, Phyllis, Jacob, Rachel, Jean-Marc and Morgan are highly talented people who share a mutual concern for customer service. Because after all, Jersey Canada is a customer service organization! Gary Bowers once remarked that Marcel Choiniere had the word "Jersey" stamped on his forehead. I feel like I am very much in the same category as Marcel! I will be watching and cheering you on as the Jersey breed in Canada racks up even bigger accomplishments than have been celebrated in the past few decades. Thanks to everyone who have been an absolute dream to work with these past 54 weeks and all the years before! #thefutureisJerseybrown Fondly, Russe!!

#lavenirestbrunJersey Amicalement, Russe!! After an extended medical and maternity leave, I am very happy to be back in my role at Jersey Canada! I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you!!” (with two exclamation points) to Russell Gammon for ably filling the role of Interim General Manager during my absence. I would also like to thank the Jersey Canada staff team, Board of Directors, and membership for your patience and flexibility while I was away. Andrew, Alexander and I have experienced a lot of wonderful changes with our family life at home, and I am excited to learn about all the brilliant developments that have taken place at Jersey Canada over the past year. Congratulations on reaching a 55 year high for registrations! I am looking forward to working with the new staff team; getting to know Rachel and Jacob, and catching up with Phyllis and Jean Marc on all the progress they have seen lately. It is exciting to learn about all the headway that Jersey Canada has gained over the past year, and to see how Jersey Canada operations have progressed to keep pace with our growing association. There are great projects on the horizon for Jersey Canada, and I am eager to hit the ground running!

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE MESSAGE DU PRÉSIDENT by/par Dave Morey President/Président
WELL THAT’S A WRAP FOLKS! It has been a pleasure to serve as a Jersey West director on the Jersey Canada board. I have enjoyed meeting so many breeders and listening to their varying perspectives. As my term nears its end, I believe it is an appropriate time to encourage all breeders to take their turn and give back to their breed in the form of service. Our industry has remained strong due to the commitment of dairy farmers to be involved in its governance. The same applies with our breed association; we have weathered the highs and lows and remained a strong, viable, financially stable association as a direct result of the commitment of past breeders to ensure our prosperity and independence. I suggest that if you cannot commit to a national position then try regional involvement in your local Jersey club, parish show, 4-H club and then venture into something at a provincial or interprovincial level like our four regional associations. 4-H demands its members to commit to community service throughout each 4-H year, “my hands for larger service.” It is imperative that we as Jersey community members give back to the breed that provides us with our daily living. My challenge to each of you is to get involved with one function, event or take on a directorship role during 2019. If we all take our turn, the commitment isn’t so large....many hands make light work. I will say it again, this breed is on the cusp of pure explosion. We need all hands on deck, from all corners of the country, from all shapes and sizes of farms, to make it soar to its potential. I would like to personally thank Russell Gammon for stepping back in for a year to provide his leadership at Jersey Canada. It has been a delight to work with you. Even though he is officially retired, I know we will all be seeing him around and his presence will, as always, inspire us. Finally, welcome back to Kathryn Roxburgh as Jersey Canada General Manager. With her calm and effective management skills and the direction of a strong, engaged board, I am very confident our future with Jerseys in Canada is in good hands. Hope to see many of you in Alberta in April for the annual meeting. As always in the West, everyone is welcome.
Respectueusement, Dave

Sale of Stars at RAWF Averages $7,571 on 14 Lots by/par Russell Gammon - Interm General Manger The first Jersey Sale of Stars was held at the Royal Agricultural Winter fair in 1952, more than six and half decades ago. The Sale of Stars, and versions of this sale that followed was always one of the highlight sales of the Jersey year, attracting high level average prices. Earlier in this century, the public auction of Jersey lots as part of the Sale of Stars was discontinued. In 2018, under new management of Barclay Phoenix and John Weaver, a Jersey component to the sale of Stars was re-established. This team worked with Andrew and Jennifer Vander Meulen of Avonlea Genetics to assemble a select group of appealing Jersey consignments. The results were highly impressive with 14 Jersey live cattle and choices averaging a wonderful $7,571! Attracting the top Jersey price of $25,000 (tied for fourth highest price in the sale overall) was a junior two year old cow Campbell TB Excitation Felicidad VG-88-US, consigned by Rivendale Farm LLC of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Felicidad was bred by the partnership of Campbell Jerseys and Trailblazer Jerseys of Quebec. She sold carrying a September service to the popular River Valley CeCe Chrome. Her dam MB Lucky Lady Feliz Navidad-Et Ex-91 was Grand Champion at the World dairy expo Jersey Show in 2018. Her sire is Bridon Excitation.
Grand dam of the high seller is Marlau Comerica Fabienne, a highly accomplished show cow who is Ex-94-2E and sired by Bridon Remake Comerica, a maternal brother of Excitation. The high seller was bought by the Feliz Navidad Syndicate of Syracuse, New York. A choice of six June 2019 heifers sired by Reich-Vale Vaden sold for $6,500 to John Boer and family of Texas. Second high seller was Avonlea A Chocolate Chipit, a March 2018 calf by Sunset Canyon Andreas and from seven generations of Excellent dams in the famed K family developed by consignors, Avonlea Genetics Inc. of Brighton, Ontario. Lorne Ella of Rock Ella Farm Ltd. placed the winning bid of $14,500 to own this promising consignment. Chipit’s dam is the hugely popular Avonlea Premier Chocolate Chip now Ex-95 who has an extraordinarily long list of show winnings at major shows and well above average high butterfat production records. Chocolate chip is by Hawarden Impuls Premier. Two other consignments fetched prices of more than $10,000. The first one was Despresverts Premier Glory, a December 2017 Premier daughter, and was consigned by Ferme Pres Verts Senc in Quebec and purchased by Pacific Edge Jerseys, the Rochas, of Tillamook, Oregon for $11,500. Selling at $10,200 was Josclaud Victorious Pixie, a River Valley Victorious-ET September 2017 daughter consigned by the Prins family of Pryme Farms Inc, Brighton, Ontario. She was purchased by Eddie Sekerak of Pennsylvania. We can be thankful and excited that Jerseys made such a successful comeback at the Sale of Stars!

20 Years of Registrations
20 ans d'inscriptions

On January 29th, 1999, Jersey Canada started registry processing in-house. In the last 20 years, we have processed more than 161,000 registrations. What are some of the benefits about completing inhouse processing? • Capacity for multiple animal application(registrations) and no need to include breeding slips. Jersey Canada randomly selects 1 in 300 AI or natural service female calves, and 1 in 25 ET female calves for a parentage test. These random tests are called “spot tests”. • Majority of registrations will be processed and mailed within 14 business days. • Transfers still require a signature from the current owner designating the sale to the new owner and mailed to Jersey Canada as required by the pedigree act. • Payment after processing; Jersey Canada accepts cash, cheques, Visa, MasterCard, Amex or Online banking payment. • When genomic or microsatellite testing is completed, this is documented on the animal’s pedigree • Online Herdbook (www.jerseycanada.com -> our services -> Online Herdbook provides access to infomation about the animal such as verification that the registration has been completed, current owner, breeder, pedigree, percentage, genomic case, DNA case (this is microsatellite testing), progeny, lactation(proof sheet), classification and if they are active or inactive. The Online Herdbook provides benefits to both current owner and/or potential buyers. Progress in online registrations The reported figure for registration at the end of 1999 was 7,772. 5 years later, in 2004, Jersey Canada reported registrations of 6,591 with an average 26% the registration being electronically received. 10 years later, in 2009, Jersey Canada reported registrations of 7,901, with an average 57% of the registrations being submitted electronically. 15 years later, in 2014, Jersey Canada reported registrations of 8,831 with an average 73% of the registrations being electronically received. Last year, almost 20 years later, Jersey Canada reported registrations of 11, 811 with an average 81% of the registration being electronically received. What does it mean as a registrar receiving applications moving away from faxes, emails or mailed applications? There is increased responsibility for the registrar to proof read and verify the information received meets all protocols or rules of registration. It takes a good amount of concentration, focus and re-checking, therefore you may receive a call from the registrar verifying dam or sire information, embryo information, or breeding date, to rule out the possibility of a different breeding or sire. Upon receipt of your certificates of registration, animals owners should verify that all information is correct.

Robots Q & A With Jason French, District Manager Ontario and Maritimes for DeLaval Inc. Barn styles you have seen and what works in a given situation The barn style depends on the number of robots, the way that manure and feed move within the barn and most importantly, the way the farmer wants to manage their cows. The six row barns that are perimeter fed have become popular because the cows are all in the middle of the barn allowing for easy movement of these animals when switching group pens. The three-row stall barns are also still popular as they do not take up as big of a footprint of land and allows for a single feed alley on the side. These barns are configuring their two robots in a L-shaped position or with 2 robots in the same room on the outside wall of the barn to allow good flow around the robot. If allowing for maximum amount of headlock space at the bunk per cow, then a two row barn is best suited for overall space. How are farmers retrofitting their existing barns for robots? The questions that we generally have in retrofits is if there is enough space around the robot to allow good cow traffic to enter the robot and exit. Due to the barn layout, an addition can be made on the end or side to house the robots plus some sorting ability. Tie-stall facilities are being transformed as well however an addition is usually needed to house more stalls. How does a dairy farmer decide on the right robot brand? All robot brands have milking robots that will get cows milked although they may have different methods to get that action done. The main decision factor is the dealer for the brand. When the dealer has access to knowledgeable people for barn design, herd management support and service technicians, then the farmer becomes more at ease when it comes to this new milking endeavour. What about mixed breed herds – how does that work? When you have a mixed herd of Jerseys and Holsteins, the challenge can be the stall size within the barn. You want cows to still lay in their stall properly to keep it clean plus have them in a comfortable position when laying. For the robot, it is important to make sure that the cow can fit comfortably in the robot for good milking performance. At DeLaval, the VMS V300 robot has indexing which moves the feed manager into a position that can fit a mature Holstein cow as well as a Jersey two year old into a position where the robot arm can attach the milk cups without her being able to move from front to back in the robot stall. Rule of thumb for number of robots to # of cows This rule depends on the amount of production that the cows are achieving as well as the overall performance of the robot. The general rule has been that robots max out at 60 cows with 50-55 cows being a comfortable number if you are a high production herd achieving three times a day visits. We are excited at DeLaval that the new V300 robot will reach 70 cows per robot with 60-65 being a comfortable number. Cow adjustment period and how does it work? If you are a tie-stall herd moving into a free stall barn then it is wise to get them into the barn ahead of time to get used to the environment. For free stall to free stall barns then this is obviously a less stressful time for the cow. If the cow is handled during the start-up time in a calm environment then the next two weeks will go well as the cows are not feeling stressed to go to the robot. We don’t want to give them a bad experience with noise or feeling pressured so that they don’t come back.
18
What About Feed? It is a two-part system, providing good quality forages in the bunk plus a hard high quality of pellet in the robot. This balance will not only give good production but also help drive cows to the robot for visits. How do Jerseys adapt? Exceptionally! With the nature of Jersey cows, we always get good visits to the robot and full Jersey herds see low to no fetching of cows. How does planned maintenance help with performance of the robot? All robots should be maintained based on the recommended schedule from the manufacturer. When this is followed along with the farmer following daily routine for cleaning and checking certain points on the robot then the robot will work very well. What is the financial impact when working with robots? Robots are most often installed due to lack of labour available to the farm therefore we see as farms get larger the labour force can be reduced. Cows are performing better due to more frequent milkings therefore less cows are needed to fill quota that can lead to less inputs into the farm. Cows are more relaxed in robot facilities therefore, they are lasting longer that gives more profit for animals raised on the farm. Lessons learned? Robots don’t stop you from working in the barn. To be a successful robot farmer, it is the same as any kind of milking facility, you have to spend time in the barn with your cows to manage them. What robots do give you is flexibility of your time to make those management decisions but also to complete the task.

February 2019 Canadian Jersey Breeder

Social Media Proponents For Agriculture Receive Certificates Of Recognition From Jersey Canada by Russell Gammon, Interim Manager, Jersey Canada Jersey Canada is proud to present Certificates of Recognition to two dairy farmers who are voluntarily telling agriculture’s story through social media. The certificates recognize the freely given services of Tim May aka Farmer Tim of Mayhaven Farms, Rockwood, Ontario and Derrick Josi, the voice of TDF Honest Farming from Wilsonview (Jersey) Farm in Tillamook, Oregon, USA. This is the first time that Jersey Canada has ever presented Certificates of Recognition. Jersey Canada’s Board believes that the contributions of these two gentlemen and their advocacy for agriculture are significant and deserve recognition. Tim May and his family maintain a thriving herd of registered Holstein cows at their farm in Rockwood, Ontario. They also maintain a small herd of Belted Galloway (aka Oreo) beef cows. For a number of years Tim has taken to social media to explain the daily life of agricultural producers to his almost 40,000 followers. Tim approaches this subject with a mixture of compassion, wisdom, periodic humour, an educator’s heart and a considerate respect for his audience. Given all of the real life examples Tim can share
February 2019 Canadian Jersey Breeder
of his life on the farm, he is highly relatable. Of late, Tim has taken up the topic of mental health in the farming community. He is adept at conveying the pressures that come with regular farming life and the impact it can have on individuals, families and communities. He is fearless in his approach, addressing difficult topics and using his own experience to aid the conversation. Derrick Josi farms with his family in the dairy rich region of Tillamook County on the Pacific coast of Oregon. The Wilsonview Jersey herd is home to over 450 milking females who are among the best in the United States. Derrick approaches his interactions with the general public using regular dollops of humour and great respect for a layperson's understanding of agriculture and the farming life. Derrick produces high quality content, even incorporating the use of drones into his videos, which are available to over 30,000 Facebook followers and over 3,800 Instagram followers. Derrick often encounters opposition to his posts, and is in the same category as Tim in being exceedingly kind with those who are uninformed, but truly sincere in wanting others to know more about food production and the farming life. These farmers are two people among many who have taken to social media to tell the story of agriculture as it is today. Using the many communication tools available, anyone can share their story as Tim and Derrick have done. It takes time and some ingenuity and thinking, but we all have unique perspectives and can make positive contributions to a larger conversation. Jersey Canada is thrilled to recognize these people who are investing their time and energy into increasing the larger public’s understanding of food production. They freely share information about farming practices and the why behind them, the farming community’s commitment to social responsibility, caring for the environment and the proper care of animals. Thank you, Tim and Derrick! 53
Derrick Josi on his Farm in Tillamook, Oregon Derrick Josi sur sa ferme à Tillamook, Oregon

February 2019 Canadian Jersey Breeder
Star Brood CowsVaches souches étoiles Award date between December 1, 2018 and February 11, 2019
The following list recognizes outstanding brood cows, awarding stars by calculating production and conformation qualifications on progeny that are classified and have completed records. A cow is required to have three registered progeny to be named a Star Brood Cow and two of these progeny must contribute both type and production points for the cow to qualify as a Star Brood. Additional progeny can contribute for type, production or both. Certificates for Star Brood Cows are available upon request by owners from Jersey Canada.

JERSEY
Remembering Bob Anderlini ~Obituary~ In the early hours of January 14, Robert Alfred Edward Anderlini passed away peacefully in his sleep. Bob was born to Louisa and Caesar Anderlini on February 13, 1939, in New Westminster, and spent his life on
his family farm in Aldergrove. At 15 years of age, Bob purchased his first Jersey cow, beginning the award-winning Valtallina Jersey herd, which operated in Aldergrove for just over 50 years. During this time, Bob earned a variety of accolades including Jersey Canada Master Breeder, many grand champion and reserve grand champion show winners, premiere breeder honours, and many high production awards, including multiple President’s Trophies for lifetime high production. Bob was never afraid to follow his own path when developing his herd, which became known internationally for its combination of longevity, production and type. The last of the Valtallina Jerseys were dispersed in 2009 but Bob’s love and passion for the Jersey cow never ended. Legendary Canadian Jersey fieldman Oliver Evans of British Columbia was instrumental in encouraging a teenaged Bob to start with Jerseys and helped him source his foundation cattle. Bob was very good at making friends as he
had an easy way with people about him. He was a valued mentor to many younger Jersey dairymen. Bob served on a number of boards, including that of the Otter Co-op and Aldergrove Credit Union. He was a longstanding member of Jersey Canada, serving on the board for many years and as president in 1985. Throughout his life, Bob was an avid gardener, and delighted in sharing produce with others. Bob was devoted to family and was a loving father to Ken, Boni, Dustin, and Tia. He spent his retirement farming sheep on his farm in Aldergrove. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Louisa and Caesar, and by his son, Ken. He is survived by wife Sue Anderlini, sisters Betty (Al Stark) and Diana Krobath, children Boni (Frank Datema), Dustin, and Tia, granddaughters Katelyn (Derek Hamman) and Alexis (Tobias Dyson), and adored greatgranddaughter Eliza Hamman, along with a vast number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. All who had the honour of knowing him will miss him tremendously.
