RUMINATIONS Phyllis Harrington Interm General Manager / Administrator, Jersey Canada 2019 was a year of many changes and challenges, but the Jersey breed continued its upward momentum across the country. Over the past year registration numbers held steady, and in some of the provinces saw an increase. In the last ten years we have gone from 7,092 registrations in 2009 to 11,036 in 2019, and maintained registrations of over 10,000 for the past three years. This is significant for the Jersey Breed in Canada. Transfers were slightly down for various reasons, such as a flood of heifers in certain areas resulting in fewer sales happening, or

breeders importing from US due to the economics of transportation costs. Reviewing milk recording statistics since 2001, we have noted that overall herd numbers across the country have either been maintained or increased, with the largest increase being in Quebec. Between 2001 and 2019, the QC herds total increased from 140 to 687, and cows from 1,564 to 7,687. Another major region of growth was Western Canada. 2001-2019 numbers saw herds increase from 62 to 141, and cows from 1,737 to 3,554. That is quite an accomplishment, and it should be noted that many of these herds are owned and managed by young and enthusiastic producers. Upon reviewing 2019 financials, the association continues to maintain steady growth, and the Board is very conscious in monitoring the revenues and expenses. Working with the auditors, they have commented on the associations ability to work within perimeters of the budget set for each year. Hats off to

your Board for their due diligence! 2020 brings a new decade, a new vision and new opportunities. In a few short months, the World Jersey Cattle Bureau Tour and Annual Meeting is taking place across Canada. Hosted by Jersey Canada, the WJCB 2020 tour runs from June 20th until July 14th. The pre-tour is in Quebec, the main tour is in Ontario and the post-tour takes place in Alberta and B.C. This is an exciting opportunity for proud Jersey breeders to showcase their Canadian genetics and management skills, and exchange ideas with international fellow breeders. Important as we enter the new decade, the Board of Directors, along with the new General Manager, will have the challenge of updating the strategic plan for our association. This includes addressing new milk pricing: how does this impact Jersey owners and what marketing opportunities does this give to having Jerseys in the barn? Finally, I would like to welcome Danny Morin to the Jersey Canada Board, filling the position of district Quebec 3. As well, a warm welcome to Jarold Dumouchel in his new position as General Manager with Jersey Quebec. Jarold comes on board at an exciting time, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Jersey Quebec. Looking forward to the roaring 20â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, onward and upwards!

2019 fut une année de multiples changements et défis, mais la race Jersey continue sur sa trajectoire partout au pays. Au cours de la dernière année, le nombre d’enregistrements est demeuré constant et, dans certaines provinces, on a même vu une augmentation. Au cours des dix dernières années, nous sommes passés de 7092 enregistrements en 2009 à 11 036 en 2019. Les enregistrements se sont maintenus au-dessus de la barre des 10 000 enregistrements au cours des trois dernières années. Ceci est significatif pour la race Jersey au Canada. Les transferts ont légèrement baissé pour diverses raisons, comme

un afflux de génisses dans certaines régions qui ont nécessité moins de ventes, ou moins d’importation des États-Unis pour des raisons économiques. En révisant les statistiques de contrôle laitier depuis 2001, nous avons noté que généralement le nombre de troupeaux au pays s’est maintenu ou a augmenté, le Québec ayant connu la plus grande augmentation. Entre 2001 et 2019 les troupeaux québécois sont passés de 140 à 687 et les vaches de 1564 à 7687. Une autre croissance majeure s’est manifestée dans l’ouest canadien. Les chiffres 2001-2019 ont vu les troupeaux augmenter de 62 à 141 et les vaches de 1737 à 3554. C’est tout un accomplissement on doit mentioner que plusieurs de ces tropeaux sont gérés et appartenus par de jeunes producteurs enthousiastes. Du côté financier, en 2019 l’association continue de maintenir une croissance constante et le conseil d’administration est très consciencieux dans la supervision des revenus et des dépenses. Les auditeurs ont souligné l’efficacité de l’association qui s’en tient

aux périmètres du budget fixé chaque année. Bravo à notre conseil pour leur compétence! 2020 est le début d’une nouvelle décennie, une nouvelle vision et de nouvelles opportunités. Dans quelques mois, se tiendront d’un bout à l’autre du Canada, les visites et l’Assemblée annuelle du World Jersey Cattle Bureau. Organisées par Jersey Canada, les visites du WJCB 2020 se tiendront du 20 juin au 14 juillet. Les visites pré-assemblée seront au Québec, la visite principale en Ontario et les visites post-assemblée seront en Alberta et en C.-B. C’est une opportunité excitante pour les fiers éleveurs de Jerseys de mettre en valeur la génétique canadienne et leurs talents de gestionnaire tout en échangeant des idées avec des éleveurs de partout dans le monde. Au début de cette nouvelle décennie, le Conseil d’administration, ainsi que le nouveau Directeur général, devront relever le défi de mettre à jour le plan stratégique pour notre assocition. Ceci comprendra de discuter de la façon dont le lait est payé : quel est l’impact pour les propriétaires de Jerseys et quelles opportunités de marketing sont ouvertes à ceux qui ont des Jerseys dans leur étable? Finalement, j’aimerais souhaiter la bienvenue à Danny Morin à la table du conseil de Jersey Canada, qui remplit le siège du District Québec 3. J’aimerais aussi souhaiter la plus chaleureuse des bienvenue à Jarold Dumouchel en tant que nouveau Directeur général de Jersey Quebec. Jarold arrive à un moment excitant où Jersey Québec fête son 100e anniversaire. Que les folles années 20 débutent! Vers l’avant, vers le sommet!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DU PRESIDENT David Morey President / Président, Jersey Canada I have had the privilege to work with cattle my entire life. Whether it was directly or indirectly, the cow came first. It has taken me awhile to admit what was obvious from the beginning. The cow was important but the people were more important. I met my partner in life because we shared that passion for cows (although I wish I would have known how deep her passion was at that time, diamonds might have been cheaper). I know there are many of you can say the same thing. Once Tracy and I had kids, the Jerseys brought us closer still. My A.I. experience introduced me to remarkable individuals, who taught me not only about livestock but also about business sense and has given me lifelong friendships. We bought a herd from a wonderful couple that quickly became our family, their herdsman joined us for awhile and became a son to us. A chance embryo sale to a couple with a very different background to ours turned into a long term partnership and again family. Showing cattle early on, we brought many young people into our lives, watched them mentor our young children, watched them marry and have families of their own and watched our children now mentor their children. Numerous cattle partnerships over the years have grown our extended family way beyond that of what the average person experiences. My time with Jersey Canada has gained me family and friendships from across the country and around the globe. Our dearest friends are from the Jersey fraternity.

From all of these people I have not only gained friendships but learned something, sometimes large, sometimes small but forever learning from each other. Now we watch our children networking and adding cattle people to their extending family from near and far. It is a very unique business, this cattle industry, its people are the most welcoming and open hearted. Enjoy the cattle, stay for the people. My warmest continued wishes to you all for your success with the Jersey cow and the health and happiness of your extended Jersey family. 

J’ai eu le privilège de travailler avec du bétail toute ma vie. Que ce soit directement ou indirectement, la vache passait toujours en premier. Ça m’a pris du temps pour admettre ce qui était évident depuis le début. La vache est importante, mais les gens le sont encore plus. J’ai rencontré ma partenaire de vie parce qu’on partageait une passion pour les vaches (même si je souhaite parfois avoir reconnu l’importance de cette passion au début, les diamants aurait été moins dispendieux). Je sais que plusieurs peuvent dire la même chose. Lorsque Tracy et moi avons eu des enfants, les Jerseys nous ont encore plus rapprochés. Mon expérience d’IA m’a permis de rencontrer des gens remarquables qui m’ont non seulement appris des choses sur le bétail mais sur le sens des affaires tout en m’apportant des amitiés durables. Nous avons

acheté un troupeau d’un couple merveilleux qui est rapidement devenu membre de notre famille. Leur gérant de troupeau s’est joint à nous pendant un temps et est devenu comme un fils pour nous. Une vente d’embryon comme les autres à un couple ayant un parcours de vie complètement différent du nôtre s’est transformée en un partenariat à long terme et encore une fois, a élargi notre famille. Au début, lors d’expositions de bétail, plusieurs jeunes gens sont entrés dans nos vies. Ils ont aidé à former nos jeunes enfants puis nous les avons vus se marier et avoir leurs propres enfants. Nos enfants ont alors aidé à former leurs enfants. Plusieurs partenariats d’animaux ont agrandi au fil des ans notre famille élargie bien au-delà de ce qu’une personne moyenne peut en faire l’expérience. Le temps passé chez Jersey Canada m’a apporté famille et amitiés de partout au pays et autour du monde. Nos meilleurs amis sont de la communauté Jersey. De toutes ces personne, je n’ai non seulement gagné des amitiés mais j’ai appris quelque chose – parfois de grandes choses, parfois de petites mais nous avons toujours appris les uns de l’autre. Maintenant, nous observons nos enfants rencontrer et ajouter des gens à leur famille élargie, des gens de près et de loin. Le domaine du bétail, c’est un secteur d’affaire unique. Ces gens sont des plus accueillants, ouverts de coeur et d’esprit. Profitez du bétail, restez pour les gens. Mes vœux les plus chaleureux à tous pour les succès de la vache Jersey. Santé et bonheurs à votre famille Jersey élargie.

Jean MacConnell of Trebor Jersey Farm at Meadowville, Pictou County NS turned 100 years old on January 2, 2020. She celebrated on December 28th at Meadowville Poplar Hill Community Hall. Her families longevity would seem to indicate that Jersey milk is good for you! Jean was raised on one Jersey farm and her married life was spent on another a few miles away. Jean was born at Dalcraig Jersey Farm at Heathbell, the daughter of D. W. and Dolina Adamson. In 1979 her brother, the late Jack Adamson, received the Jersey Canada Master Breeder award for D. W. Adamson and Son. The herd had a strong Brampton and Campburn influence. Jack was 93 when he passed away.

now Lloyd have continued the family tradition with Jerseys. Numerous calves from the Trebor herd are used by local 4-H members every year, and Jean's children were active in 4-H. She now lives in her own home with her son Lloyd. She is very bright and still cooks for herself and her son. She has a surviving sibling, Ina, who is 87 and going strong. Her late brother Jack, who worked with the Dalcraig herd, was 93 when he passed. At her celebration were greetings from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Governor General Julie Payette, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil plus others. Also in attendance was Giller Prize winning author Johanna Skibsrud, whose mother Janet is married to Jeanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son Sandy.

Jean MacConnell de Trebor Jersey Farm de Meadowville, Comté de Pictou, NS a eu 100 ans le 2 janvier 2020. On l’a fêtée le 28 décembre à la salle communautaire Meadowville Poplar Hill. La longévité dans sa famille semble indiquer que le lait de Jersey est bon pour vous! Jean a grandi sur une ferme Jersey. Elle s’est mariée et a aménagé sur une autre ferme Jersey pas très loin. Jean est née sur la ferme Dalcraig Jersey Farm à Heathbell, fille de D.W. et Dolina Adamson. En 1979 son frère, feu Jack Adamson, a reçu le titre de Maître Éleveur de Jersey Canada pour D.W. Elle vit maintenant dans sa propre maison avec son fils Lloyd. Elle a l’esprit vif et cuisine encore pour elle et son fils. Il lui reste une sœur, Ina, qui a 87 ans et est très active. Son frère, Jack, qui a travaillé avec le troupeau Dalcraig et décédé à l’âge de 93 ans. Lors de cette fête, elle a reçu des vœux de la Reine Elizabeth, du premier ministre Justin Trudeau, de la gouverneure générale Julie Payette, du premier ministre de la Nouvelle-Écosse Stephen McNeil et plusieurs autres. Présents à la fête, on retrouvait l’autrice du prix Giller, Johanna Skibsrud, dont la mère, Janet, est mariée à Sandy, le fils de Jean.

THE VALUE OF FARM TOURS LA VALEUR DES VISITES DE FERMES The winter solstice welcomes the beginning of the meeting season and the opportunity participate in farm tours. These tours could be part of annual meeting events, club tours or open houses for a new construction, but they all offer an invitation to insights and learnings. Farm tours provide a venue to exchange ideas with like minded dairy producers, view differing management systems, feeding systems, feeding programs, calf rearing protocols, equipment and of course dairy cattle, a banquet of dairy daughters from a roster of sires on display. Breeders certainly cannot nearly test all the available sires in their own herds, being able to see how sires transmit within herds is a valuable, being able to compare the dams’ conformation and production traits against your own herds’ strengths and weaknesses provides sound information for future breeding decisions. Those contemplating renovations or new buildings in the future often use farm tours as method to compare systems of structure, ventilation, feeding, grouping and milking systems. Past President, John Claessens, noted that “if you do not come away from a farm tour with something new to try in your own herd, a warning of what doesn’t work or a new idea, then you have missed an opportunity.” The farm tours that were part of the Jersey Ontario Annual General Meeting events were well attended, some breeders drove in excess of four hours to visit herds throughout Oxford County, even drawing

a visitor from Michigan. These breeders see the value of farm tours. Don’t miss your opportunity. Thank you to all the breeders who open their barns to visitors to promote information exchange, education and provide a social network.

Karnvilla Holsteins & Jerseys is owned and operated by Doug, Helen, Derek, and Dani Karn. A Master Breeder herd that has been established for approximately 50 years, Karnvilla has always had an appreciation for Jerseys, beginning with Doug’s grandfather, who had a Jersey herd north of Woodstock. With the involvement of Derek and Dani, they have purchased several Jersey 4-H calves, which have now become the foundation of their Karnvilla/Karnation Jersey herd. They are currently milking 58 combined Holsteins and Jerseys.

Un troupeau Maître Éleveur qui est établi depuis environ 50 ans, Karnvilla a toujours eu un faible pour les Jerseys depuis l’époque du grand-père de Doug qui avait un troupeau Jersey au nord de Woodstock. Avec la participation de Derek et Dani, ils ont acheté plusieurs veaux 4-H Jerseys qui sont devenus la fondation de leur troupeau Jersey Karnvilla/Karnation. Il y a présentement 58 Holsteins et Jerseys en lactation.

Greenmoor Greenmoor Farms is Paul & Jane Shulman and their son James. They milk 120 cows on 2 robots and have had a closed herd since 2008. They genomic test every calf, using sexed semen on the top females and breed the bottom of the herd to Angus.

Greenmoor Farms est composée de Paul & Jane Shulman et leur fils, James. Il y a 120 vaches en lactation pour 2 robots et ils ont un troupeau fermé depuis 2008. Sugar Hill Jerseys is a 3rd generation farm owned and operated by Jon, Shelly, Abby, Megan, and Erin Howe. Jon was introduced to the Jersey breed by his father, Bob, who bought him a Jersey calf for 4-H in 1982. Jon and his wife Shelly bought the farm in 2009. At the time they were milking 55 cows in a tie stall barn. They built a new free stall barn and moved into it in December 2015. They are also excited to be promoting, along with Hometown Jerseys, a great young bull, Sugar Hill Premier Master.

Sugar Hill Jerseys est une ferme de troisième génération appartenue et gérée par Jon, Shelly, Abby, Megan et Erin Howe. Jon est devenu familier avec la race Jersey grâce à son père, Bob, qui lui a acheté un veau Jersey pour le 4-H en 1982. Jon et son épouse Shelly ont acheté la ferme en 2009. À cette époque, il y avait 55 vaches en lactation dans une étable entravée. Ils ont bâti une nouvelle étable à stabulation libre et y ont emménagé en décembre 2015. Avec Hometown Jerseys, ils sont excités de faire la promotion d’un jeune taureau prometteur, Sugar Hill Premier Master.

Claessic Fields Inc. Claessic Fields started milking in 1991, purchasing 15 grade Holsteins and quota from John’s father while renting his barn. They culled the Holsteins and switched to Jerseys in the first year as the barn was too small to accommodate the Holsteins. They moved to Oxford County in 1996, renting the farm from JoAnn’s mother, and finally purchasing the farm in 2001. John and Jo-Ann along with their son Matthew incorporated the farm in 2009, with an update to the tie stall barn. In 2016 they built a pack barn and are currently milking 90+ cows. Claessic Fields a commencé la production

They purchased the farm in 2012, and at the time is was primarily crossbred cows including beef, Swedish Red, Milking Shorthorn and others. Hiske grew up with Jerseys on her parents farm – Renkema Family Farms Ltd, and in 2014 they converted to Jerseys, purchasing some great cows from local herds such as Rich Valley, Bri-Lin, Paullor, and Waymar.

Harcolm Farms Harcolm Farms is a 3rd generation dairy farm, purchased from Dwight Hargreaves’ parents in 1977. Rob and Rachel joined the corporation in 2008. They have always been Holstein breeders, but bought a Jersey calf with Wayne Lowes in 1999 to show as a 4-H project. From that day on they have Jerseys as a part of their herd. In 2010 they built a free stall barn and added a Lely A3 robot, adding a second robot in 2017 that accommodates all the Jersey’s. In 2018 a biogas digester was added to the farm that also includes an automatic bedding separator that delivers separated solids to all the stalls in the barn.

In its 64th year, the All Canadian contest is a Jersey Canada award program that recognizes top cows in the show circuit. Traditionally these cows enjoy the attention and prestige of being named an All Canadian. Winners and nominees for each class were placed by a selection of judges who judged qualifying shows across Canada. Points were assigned for each placing to determine the overall All Canadian, Reserve, and Honorable Mention for each class. All Canadian winners will be presented with an award at the Jersey Canada Annual General Meeting. The Champion Cow of the 2019 All Canadian Contest is SHOWDOWN JUSTINE, exhibited and owned by Vierra Diary Farms. Justine was Grand Champion, Senior Champion and 1st in Class at the 2019 Royal Agricutural Winter Fair. She was also Reserve Grand Champion and 1st in Class at the 2019 World Dairy Expo. Taking the overall Champion Heifer spot of the 2019 All Canadian Contest is GOLDEN JOYRIDE LOUISA, exhibited and owned by Glen & Sheila Burgess. Joyride Louisa was named Junior Champion and 1st in Class at the 2019 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. À sa 64e année, le concours Tout Canadien est un programme de de Jersey Canada qui reconnaît les meilleures vaches sur le circuit des expositions. Traditionnellement, ces vaches profitent de l’attention et du prestige rattachés au titre de Tout Canadien. Les gagnantes et les candidates pour chacune des classes furent placées par une sélection de juges qui ont officié aux expositions de qualification de partout au Canada. Des points furent attribués pour chacun des placements pour déterminer le Tout Canadien, Réserve et Mention honorable pour chacune des classes. Les gagnantes Tout Canadien recevront un prix lors de l’Assemblée générale annuelle de Jersey Canada. La vache Championne du concours Tout Canadien 2019 est SHOWDOWN JUSTINE, exposée et appartenue par Vierra Diary Farms. Justine fut Grande Championne, Championne Senior et 1e dans la classe lors de la Foire agricole Royale d’hiver 2019. Mr. Edward Dalling of Waterford passed away at the Sussex Health Center on January 5, 2020 at the age of 81. Edward, of Dalling Vale Jerseys Ltd. In Waterford NB, was a lifelong Jersey breeder and past President of the Jersey Association of New Brunswick. M. Gordon McKeen, of the Eltona and Keensway herds, passed away Jan 25 at his home in Belmore, Ontario at the age of 87. Gord had moved to Ontario in the spring of 1999 moving from his home town in Manitoba of Rosdale . He is predeceased by his First wife Grace (Johnston), his second wife Christine (Elliott) and his parents Agnes and Frank McKeen. He had a smile and chat with everyone he met .His love and passion for the Jersey breed carried on after his move to Ontario. Tom Barichello and Sharron Gibbs (Barbros Jerseys) and Mike and Maureen Head, Surrey, BC are pleased to announce the marriage of Alicia Barichello and Jordan Head. The ceremony and reception was held at Golden Eagles Golf Club, Pitt Meadows, on a beautiful, sunny November 2 day. After the ceremony the newly weds were whisked away by helicopter for photos on the nearby mountain ridge. The happy couple reside in Langley with their rescue Greyhound, Flash, where they combine work with post-graduate studies. La cérémonie et la réception se sont tenues au Golden Eagles Golf Club, de Pitt Meadows, en la belle journée ensoleillée du 2 novembre. Après la cérémonie, les nouveaux mariés se sont envolés en hélicoptère pour prendre des photos en flan de montagne tout près. L’heureux couple demeure à Langley avec leur Greyhound rescapé, Flash, où ils allient travail et études postuniversitaires.

Gordon McKeen est décédé le 25 janvier à sa résidence de Belmore ON à l’âge de 87 ans. Gord est déménagé en Ontario au printemps 1999 de sa ville natale de Rosdale MB. Il est prédécédé par sa première épouse, Grace (Johnston), sa deuxième épouse, Christine (Elliott) et ses parents, Agnes et Frank McKeen. Il avait un sourire pour tous ceux qu’il rencontrait. Son amour et sa passion pour la race Jersey ont perduré après son arrivée en Ontario. Gord laissera un bon souvenir à sa famille élargie, ses amis et tous ceux qui l’ont connu.

Introducing the Jersey Ontario 2020-2022 Youth Delegate: Sheldon Shane Sheldon Shane was nominated by an application received from the Leeds-Grenville Jersey Club. Sheldon began his passion for Jerseys in 2012 – He received his first Jersey cow purchased by his parents “Montdale Iatola Gracie VG-88”. Gracie gave him unforeseen obstacles though to expand in his herd, as she had 4 bull calves and no heifers. But, in 2017 he was gifted a Jersey calf from an employer as a good luck gift while heading off to college. He then continued to buy 3 Jerseys at the Trio-Maple Dispersal. Last spring he purchased two Jersey heifers for a friend and himself to show in 4-H.

Sheldon has said that, “Showing Jerseys has been the best decision I have made in 4-H, with this being our best year yet!”. He continues to build a herd, purchasing 4 deep pedigreed Jerseys at the Rosalea dispersal and now with owning 10 Jerseys he is excited to breed for a herd that will be successful both in the show ring and the barn. Being very active in 4-H, his family farm, the Leeds & Grenville Holstein Club Eastern Ontario Invitational Show, the committee felt that he is the ideal candidate to turnover this position. Jersey Atlantic AGM Report and Photos by: Meghan Brosens, Jersey Atlantic On March 2, Jersey Atlantic held their annual meeting in Sussex New Brunswick. 13 Jersey breeders came from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick for a very productive meeting. The meeting was followed by a delicious home made lasagna lunch. New officers were elected, Matt Brosens is the new president and Deanna Doctor is the new vice president. With around 60 Jersey Canada members in Atlantic Canada Jersey Atlantic is going to aggressively promote the Jersey breed in avenues that other producers will see, such as the newsletter sent out by all the Provincial Dairy Boards. We would like to thank Frances Freeze for her role as president and for hosting the meeting. Once we finished our lunch an open barn tour was hosted by the Freeze family of Samorah Farms. Samorah Farms in Newtown, NB is owned by Sam and Debbie Freeze. Their daughter, Frances farms with them full time. They milk 55+ cows in a tie stall. The majority of the herd are Holsteins, but they also have

many Jerseys (owned by Frances), a few Guernseys and Milking Shorthorns, and most recently added a Brown Swiss. They believe that a good cow is a good cow regardless of breed. Current classification: 11EX, 28 VG, 21GP, 1G.
