I CANADIANSME MAGAZINE I FEBRUARY 2020

WELCOME Welcome to the February issue of CanadianSME. 2020 is already off at a good start with success of our very first CanadianSME Business Expo which took place on January 20th 2020 at the Metro Toronto Convention Center. With over 1,500 attendees who were business owners from a wide-range of industries, 45 exhibitors, 42 speakers, 7 panel discussions and 7 workshops, to say that the event was a huge success is an understatement. The panel discussions were focussed on important aspects such as business leadership, digital transformation, women entrepreneurship, finance and investment, global business mindset and technology for SMEs. A few highlights from the event would be the opening remarks that were presented by our VIP dignitaries: Adam Vaughan from the Parliamentary Secretary for Housing and Urban Affairs, the Honourable Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria who’s the Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction and off course the Honourable Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Chair of Cabinet.

TRENDS IMPACTING YOUR BUSINESS THIS YEAR By Lissa Ricci, Vice President of small business solutions for Cisco Canada

mall and growing business owners must constantly evolve their business to stay ahead of customer demands, market conditions and pressure from competitors. Technology can play an important role in keeping your business at the forefront of innovation … and prevent it from falling behind.

So, what should you be looking out for when it comes to your small business? Here are the technologies you absolutely can’t ignore in 2020 and what they mean for you. 6

I CANADIANSME MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER FEBRUARY 2020 2019

Take another look at how your business is – or isn’t – embracing IoT The power of the Internet of Things (IoT) goes beyond making sure you can stream your perfectly curated playlist over the shop speakers, or track the temperature of your ‘fresh never frozen’ poultry. With the right solutions in place, you can simplify operations, save energy and improve security – whether you’re running a coffee shop or a small farm. Over the next decade, we expect technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, AI, 5G and quantum computing to fully take off, creating a new wave of connected devices that can drive customers experiences and create a slew of opportunities for small business. The time to adopt is now - only 36 per cent of SMBs are using or plan to use IoT solutions, putting you ahead of the curve. What this means for you in 2020: This year, revisit your business’ IoT strategy. Don’t know where to start? Meet with an IoT vendor who can help you identify areas of improvement and then provide preconfigured, easy-to-deploy solutions that fit into your price-point.

Future-proofing your business’ network As IoT becomes ubiquitous, your business’ network will need to evolve to keep pace with the growing number of devices connecting to it every day. SMBs are increasingly dealing with shoppers who expect incredible digital experiences and customer service, while also trying to balance a complex ecosystem of cloud and web-based applications. From a tech perspective, that means creating an open, accessible network for improved in-store customer experiences and ensuring inventory management tools, scanners and POS systems can seamlessly connect. What this means for you in 2020: Ensuring you have a strong and secure network that’s flexible enough to evolve with your business will be integral to your success. And you don’t need to do it alone. Technology partners have the expertise, multi-vendor knowledge, and the personnel to help you build the network that will help you achieve your business goals.

Applications will be the key to better business analytics

Threat Hunting & Zero Trust: the new cornerstones to your security playbook Digital transformation, which includes the adoption of cloud, social and mobile technologies, continues to play a crucial role in business success. However, the introduction of these new technologies has also introduced new risks when it comes to the security of your business. According to Statistics Canada, just over one-fifth of Canadian businesses reported they were impacted by cyber security incidents which affected their operations in 2017. This includes 19 per cent of all small businesses. What this means for you: With data moving into more places, devices and clouds than most of us can keep track of, you need to get ahead of cyber threats by making Threat Hunting and Zero Trust integral to your security policies. Threat Hunting isn’t just about detecting malware, it also identifies weak links in your security environment that need to be addressed. And Zero Trust asks that you assume zero trust when someone or something requests access to your company assets. This will protect your workforce, workloads, and workplace from malicious devices and users trying to access your network. What technologies will your business adopt in 2020? What these trends all have in common is that businesses – large or small – can’t afford to be complacent when it comes to technology.

CONSUMERS USED TO MAKE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO USE A DIGITAL SERVICE TO CARRY OUT A TASK OR ACTIVITY, BUT THAT’S NO LONGER THE CASE. ACCORDING TO THE LATEST APPDYNAMICS APP ATTENTION INDEX, THE MAJORITY (71%) OF RESPONDENTS ADMIT THAT DIGITAL SERVICES HAVE BECOME INTRINSIC TO THEIR DAILY LIVES. THE USE OF DIGITAL SERVICES HAS EVOLVED TO BECOME AN UNCONSCIOUS HUMAN BEHAVIOR, ALSO KNOWN AS A ‘DIGITAL REFLEX.’

Consumers used to make a conscious decision to use a digital service to carry out a task or activity, but that’s no longer the case. According to the latest AppDynamics App Attention Index, the majority (71%) of respondents admit that digital services have become intrinsic to their daily lives. The use of digital services has evolved to become an unconscious human behavior, also known as a ‘Digital Reflex.’ What this means for you in 2020: As customers become more willing to share their data and digital habits with companies, SMBs will be able to glean important sales data and obtain valuable insight into customer shopping habits and buying trends. As an SMB owner, as long as you have the right applications, you’ll be able to use these analytics to provide customers with product information quickly, and share offers on the items they care about.

Q&A WITH

CRAIG SMYTH Engineering Lead for Global Small Business Sales, Cisco

By Lissa Ricci, VP of small business solutions, Cisco Canada

8

I CANADIANSME MAGAZINE I FEBRUARY 2020

On January 20th, business leaders, top executives and top Canadian SMEs came together at the Canadian SME Business Expo at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Craig is Cisco’s Systems Engineering Lead for Global Small Business Sales, leading the global architecture strategy for the Cisco Designed portfolio, and was part of the event’s “Your Business and Technology: What’s Next?” workshop, where he discussed the future of business technology with Matt Sergeant, CTO of Ideal, and I.

Your role at Cisco has taken you around the world, supporting small and midsized organizations across more than 140 countries. What are the common challenges you’ve noticed growing businesses around the world share? One of the biggest challenges I’ve seen has been keeping up with the changing technology landscape. The variety of devices connecting to networks is growing every day and keeping these devices secure requires constant attention. In the same light there is so much new opportunity for small businesses, and seeing the impact the right technology can have on a business is incredible – from uncovering sales customer insights to streamlining supply chains. Technology is playing an integral role in helping businesses succeed wherever they’re based. New generations of platforms are also opening the door for small business. For example, just a few years ago, Facebook, Uber and YouTube were thought of as standalone platforms. Today, they’ve transformed into economic operating systems on which new business models are being created. As a follow up, what are some of the common opportunities they share? The barriers to entry in business have never been lower! Setting up functional systems and accounting for a company can be done in a few hours. You can recruit support employees globally, with various skillsets and at many levels, with Upwork and Fiverr. E-commerce has completely transformed supply chains to make them more modern and efficient. Unified core software

products have never been more affordable and feature rich.

resources for small business owners and often there isn’t enough of it in the day. A technology partner can give you the speed, reach and expertise you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Knowledge-based business have really been the beneficiaries of these tools. Turning to Canada, what role can technology play to help our small and growing businesses overcome these challenges? The willingness to learn how new technologies are impacting an industry is becoming an increasingly important factor in small business success. It may seem overwhelming at first trying to keep up with all the changes, but intuitive interfaces have made adopting and using technology easier than ever. Just look at the vast libraries of YouTube videos and how-to guides available online – you can learn how to use new tech in minutes. That all sounds incredible. If we were to break it down, what is the first step you recommend for a growing business who wants to get more from technology? Join or create a mastermind group of peer businesses in the same industry. That way you can collaborate together on technology strategies to help flatten your learning curve. You’ll see the rate of new ideas coming toward you will multiply. What is the role of the technology partner in all of this? Why should a small business look to them instead of buying and installing their technology direct?

For example, after bringing a new technology into the business, optimizing the setup is a critical phase where an experienced partner shortens the implementation timeframe. Our partners have a strong network of IT subcontractors, so they can help deploy technology solutions wherever your business is based, no matter how remote, at a speed most small businesses can’t match. You were at the SME Business Expo on January 20th, participating in our small business workshop. Can you share a little bit more about the workshop and what attendees learned? Technology can be intimidating for businesses of all sizes. With this workshop, we wanted attendees to understand they don’t have to be an expert in technology to use it to transform their business. We really focused on how growing businesses can make the most out of technology, simply and securely. Matt, the CTO of Ideal, illustrated that brilliantly through his own experiences with technology, including Cisco Meraki. We also discussed the common challenges and opportunities that come with adopting new technologies and had engaging conversations with audience members. It was a great event and I always love having the opportunity to connect with small business owners in person.

We know time is one of the most valuable

I CANADIANSME MAGAZINE I FEBRUARY 2020

E

You have over three decades of expert business experience having advised and financed companies of several different sizes, both in the public and private industry. What would you say is the biggest challenge that entrepreneurs face? Sadly, the biggest challenge most entrepreneurs face is staying in business longer than 2-3 years. The reasons are many why so many businesses fail, and many can be avoided with some simple steps in the beginning. First a business must have these traits to survive. You MUST have a product or service that people want. Next, the price they are willing to pay for it makes it profitable for you to do so with an outstanding level of customer satisfaction. If any element of this is missing, you DO NOT have a business. You must test and validate your offering early with the mindset to fail fast and pivot if necessary. If your idea has the attributes of success, then great, move forward. If not, do the steps above and repeat until you find what works or exhausts it as a viable concept. What advice can you give to small business owners when it comes to implementing strategies that can contribute to increasing the profitability of their business? The first thing that I want to see is that systems are in place where the systems run the business and the employees run the systems. I always say that “Systems Will Set You Free” and by that, I mean that your employees will be able to effectively operate the day to day operations. They will know all of the aspects of what makes the business run effectively, they will know their roles in making it run that way. If staff changes, as it inevitably does, the systems allow for changes to flow smoothly without interruption. The by product of this is that you, the owner can work on growing the business and are not mired in the day to day. You also can take time away to enjoy the fruits of ownership. If you cannot do these things, then all you have done by taking the huge risk to start a business is to have bought yourself a job.

Having worked closely with entrepreneurs for several decades, what would you say is the most common mistake that business owners make that can seriously jeopardize the success of their business? In my book “Scale-Up to Sell’ I talk extensively about the danger of an owner becoming too involved in the day to day running of the business. This results in what I call the “Owners Trap”. The signs you are in this trap are when every aspect of the business relies on your input, customers only want to deal with you, all problems and complaints come through you, you are the one required to close a sale and revenues plateau as a result. It stands to reason that you cannot take time off and have everything run smoothly. It is very difficult to grow this way. Where this really comes back to bite an owner is when they want to sell the business. Buyers are not interested in purchasing a company that relies on its owner to run it effectively day in and day out for the obvious reason that, as the main asset, you will not be around once you sell. What business tip can you give to a small business owner who’s looking for an investor that can help them take their business to the next level? The first thing I will say is to try to hold on to your equity ownership in your business. The first place most people look for investors is what I call “love money”. This comes from family and friends. It is easier to get and, because it is likely invested for personal reasons, it is often done without the rigor of due diligence that a normal investor would demand. This can mean that you may not actually have an investable business. The result of “love money” in a failed business is not so much that your friends and family will disown you, they most likely will not, but more so in the damage it will do in how you feel about failing them. That can be a very tough position to be in. My answer is to first try to bootstrap the business, using the money you make to grow further. This involves a slower approach but ultimately results in owning

your business outright, without the pressure of investors and bank debt hanging over you. If you are taking on an investor you must hire the proper professionals to make sure you are getting a fair deal for the money invested. Make sure to retain the services of legal, accounting , finance and valuation experts to guide you on this. You may only need one of these or all depending on the complexity involved. What are the top 3 mistakes that entrepreneurs often make when it comes to making financial decisions and how can they avoid them? The first that comes to mind is growth for the sake of growth and revenue for the sake of revenue. If it is not profitable, and if it does not flow to the bottom line proportionately, then rising revenue numbers are just bravado. Do not sacrifice profit for rapid growth. The next is to be efficient with your labor costs. Make sure you are utilizing your workforce properly. Make sure your management team is being utilized fully and if not , look to them to fill any gaps required ,before hiring more staff. Last is, unless you have 10% pre-tax profit at a minimum you are on life support. This is what Greg Crabtree calls the new break-even. Once there, do what you can to get that number to 15%, without taking on more costs. When you get to 15%, you can afford to hire more and expand, taking the number back down to 10% and do it again. Slow and steady growth is the key. I would like to add a fourth and it is key. When it comes to your pre-tax profitability and ultimately your sale price, you as the owner, must be paying yourself a market-based wage. If you do not, then your profit numbers are not valid and ultimately your sale price will suffer as a result. What’s the best strategy that you believe all entrepreneurs should implement in their daily business habits to better manage the cash flow on their company? Cash Flow is the oxygen of business. You cannot go a day without it. Revenue is vanity and profits only come when the business does not eat cash. The first place to look is at your working capital timelines. That

is, the number of days between when you pay a supplier and your customer pays you. Cash out vs. Cash in. We often see that business owners pay the supplier right on time (as you should) but let accounts receivable drag on without the same diligence to collection. A good place to start is by asking your suppliers to extend terms of payment by a few days. For your accounts receivable, get diligent about recieving prompt payment of money you are owed. These can go a long way to improving your available cash to grow the business. Even small 1% increases make a huge difference. Try looking at what a slight increase in your pricing or payable days or small decreases in receivables and inventory days, will do for your cash flow and profitability. I run a model and I would be happy to do so for any business that wants to see their results for themselves. On a final note, what has been the biggest accomplishment of your professional career? What are you most proud of? I am most proud of the fact that for my entire career I have believed in the dreams of entrepreneurs and business owners. I am very proud that I believed in them when others would not, because they were to small or too early stage. I worked with them, helped them access capital and advised them along the way. To know that believing in them resulted in the creation of thousands of jobs in Canada and resulted in great products and services being provided to consumers around the globe is very gratifying. I continue to work tirelessly every day to help business owners and businesses improve their condition and have great outcomes. It is what I get up every day. I discuss all the points in this article in detail in my book Scale-Up to Sell. To order your FREE copy please go to www.scaleuptosellbook.ca

I CANADIANSME MAGAZINE I FEBRUARY 2020

Ego aside, I don’t always have the need to be right (would be fantastic though!) but I do have the need to at least have my thoughts heard. The need to be heard is universal and inherent in all of us and if we are disregarded, it can lead to frustration. It is easy to blame others and circumstances, but could we be contributing to our own frustration by neglecting to grow our ability to effectively communicate our thoughts and ideas?

Another contributing factor to feeling like our voices are not being heard, is rooted in your audience’s need to understand clearly. No one gets excited about uninspiring and unprepared ramble that does not move their heart and mind with the potential of possibilities. If you’re unprepared, be prepared that your audience will be unprepared to receive your message! Here are Five Amplifying Techniques that will keep the attention of your audience and ensure your message comes across… 1

Preparation. It demonstrates to others that you care about your message and you respect their time. Orchestrating your words can cut out clutter and infuse the clarity that most people desire. It creates structure to your message and allows you to build better stories that will resonate and last longer in the memory of your audience.

2 WIIFM. The FM radio frequency most people by default tune into is W.I.I.F.M. – What’s In It For Me! That’s not good or bad but represents a frequency that connects on their wavelength. Crafting our communication towards the personal benefit of our audience can elicit buyin quicker and keep people engaged longer.

3 Confidence. If you lack confidence in yourself and your content, so will your audience. Conviction instills a belief that activates assurance in others. People are always looking for certainty in an uncertain world and if you can represent solid footing, chances are people will want to follow you and listen to what you have to say. 4 Roadmap. Use your words to generate mental maps for your audience. Most people will go along with you if they clearly understand where you are going. Buy-in regularly sounds like, ‘I see where this is going’ and confusion sounds like, ‘this isn’t going to end well’. Asking people to take a leap of faith is telling them you do not even know where you are headed and sounds like a sleezy salesperson who says, “trust me – I know what I’m doing!” 5

Part of the Greater Good. In this market, there is a weight loss company for men whose slogan is, “If you could have done it alone, you would have done it already!”. Most people want to be a valued part of a team that suggests we are all-in, all-together. Making your team feel like their contributions matter, will make your message matter. Most people respond well to a well-timed pep talk – in other words, Inspiration creates Perspiration. Consider baking these into your cadence of communication and your teams will seek out your voice more often.

If you want to step-up and develop the Confidence, Clarity and Certainty in your voice, it’s easier than you think. It just takes a measure of focus. You need to decide if your product/service/idea is worth it. You need to decide that your voice is worth being heard then set out to become the captivating communicator who wins the room more often!

The CanadianSME Business Awards took place on January 28th 2020. We are very pleased with the turnaround of the event as it was extremely successful. The CanadianSME Business Awards gathered over 400 attendees including high profile guests, such as Rocco Rossi, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Jackie King, Chief Operating Officer of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and the honourable Vic Fedeli, the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade of Ontario. A celebration of Canadian entrepreneurship at its finest, the event was a night that celebrated and recognized the many achievements of successful entrepreneurs. Presented by top leaders in the Canadian business industry, the CanadianSME Business Awards recognized entrepreneurs in several different categories such as the Small Business of the Year, the Entrepreneur of the Year, the Technopreneur of the Year, the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Business Woman of the Year Award. More than just a night of recognizing top entrepreneurs for their hard work and success, the CanadianSME Business Awards was a great occasion for business owners to meet and mingle with other entrepreneurs. A fruitful networking opportunity, it was an evening that many entrepreneurs will not soon forget. Whether they were nominated or among the lucky winners who took home an award, entrepreneurs had the opportunity to have their name and business gain visibility towards some of Canada’s top leaders and investors. We at CanadianSME are strong supporters of the Canadian small and medium sized business industries and therefore have made it our goal to do what we can to help them have a successful journey. With that in mind, we are very pleased with the success that the CanadianSME Business Awards gained and are looking forward to the next one. Because a stronger SME industry means a stronger economy for Canada, we will continue to do whatever we can to contribute to the success of Canadian entrepreneurs.

and generally better interest rates for financing, therefore looking to purchase or start their own business. Business owners may see lower profits but higher valuations due to potential decreases in interest rates and the ability for a buyer to finance more cheaply. Nevertheless, the business for sale market performed strong in 2019 in terms of the number of deals getting done and the multiples that sellers were receiving (3-4x EBITDA). I’m optimistic that this will continue in 2020 with an average deal size of $550,000 CAD.

The state of businesses for sale in the Canadian micro market We define the micro market as any business or franchise looking to sell for anywhere between $1,000 to no more than $5,000,000. Research conducted by The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) found that 47% of business owners intend to exit their business within the next five years ─ 8% within 12 months, and 39% in the next 1 to 5 years. Looking further ahead, 72% of owners plan to exit their businesses within the next ten years. To put this into perspective, over $1.5 trillion of business assets could be transferred to a new generation of business owners over the next decade. If all of this isn’t managed well, it could have a significant impact on jobs in many local communities and the economy overall. Moreover, if business owners aren’t creating sellable businesses, in addition to a valuable, organized and prepared businesses, this can put a downward pressure on exit plans and valuations as there will be a flood of competition looking to exit and sell. From an economic perspective, Canada hasn’t been very vocal on whether 2020 will be stronger or weaker, therefore, looking south of the border for some sort of indication on whether projections of a weaker economy are a possibility. We tend to nod our heads and say yes. But why? This is largely due to the narratives around the impeachment of President Trump and trade wars, which can impact Canada. Keeping this in mind, if Canada sees a weaker economy (or even an economy that is stagnant) individuals may face job insecurity

As we dig into our data at BizON, we have a great view on the hotspots where most connections and transactions are occurring. Curious about the hotspots where businesses are selling the most? Here are the top four: 1

Ontario

2

British Columbia

3

Alberta

4

Manitoba

Aside from home-based businesses or any business not tied to a brick and mortar, these 4 provinces see a ton of action. These provinces are not only seeing interest from local buyers, but also from potential buyers from out of province, as well as foreign buyers (outside Canada). Looking forward to providing more insight on the business for sale market and the exciting world of Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition.

THE TEN SPOT® quickly developed a cult following and has become one of canada’s beloved brands, in part due to kristen’s quirky humour and commitment to excellence.
