FROM THE CEO

EDITORIAL & MARKETING MANAGER Deanna Bunten

Dear Wood-Mizer Family, Welcome to the 104th edition of The Wood-Mizer Way magazine! This “Personal Best Contest Showcase” features Wood-Mizer owners who have built projects with wood from their orange equipment. This year marked an incredible turnout with nearly 200 projects entered during the two-month contest. From the waterfront cedar chapel to amazing barns, pavilions, furniture, and more – the creativity and talent of Wood-Mizer owners has always inspired me as a fellow sawmiller. I hope you will enjoy seeing dozens of outstanding projects and reading the stories as much as I have. As you know, the success stories continue wellbeyond those featured within the following pages of this magazine which is why we have included every single project from the past two Personal Best Contests online at pbest.woodmizer.com. I’d like to take this time to congratulate everyone who has built a project or business with your Wood-Mizer equipment. Recently, I had the opportunity to run my LT28 sawmill with my brother and son (that's us in the photo below!) We love opening up logs from our property and seeing what's inside for a future family project. Thank you for all of the project ideas and inspiration! Your ongoing accomplishments are recognized and celebrated by the entire Wood-Mizer family. I encourage you to continue sharing your stories with us so that thousands of others who share our passion for working with wood can be inspired as maybe you once were. In closing, I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas filled with the joy and love that the season brings. Sincerely, John Smith

F

ive feet from the shore of the Salish Sea in British Columbia stands a majestic chapel artfully crafted from locally salvaged dead cedar trees. The exercise in geometry combines the architectural features of a Norwegian stave church with a Burmese pagoda and is a culmination of the lifelong works of the 80-year-old retired mathematics professor Lowell Hinrichs. “I have been extremely fortunate in life and I cannot imagine a more appropriate project for this phase of life,” said Lowell. “I began the chapel two years after having received a Stage IV cancer diagnosis and was not at all sure I would be able to finish it.” The son of a Lutheran pastor, Lowell has a life-long interest in mathematics, geometry and architecture. “Mathematics is the key to understanding everything,” said Lowell. During breaks from teaching at the University of Victoria, Lowell often accompanied his father at new church dedications and was enamored by the church architecture. “I sat in the service and looked at the architecture wondering why did the architect do this rather than that and so forth,” said Lowell. “For

example, I always thought that there shouldn’t be a ceiling above the alter. It should be open and go way up so that light came both literally and figuratively down from above.” When a neighbor discussed building a chapel, Lowell gained interest and began designing a structure even though he didn’t intend on building anything. However, by the time the design came to fruition, Lowell was convinced that he should build the chapel. “There was a fusion of motives and some of them deepened during the construction process,” said Lowell. “Perhaps the main intent is to provide a meditative space to enhance appreciation for the land, family, friends, and life.”

compression. A major part of the structure is the steeple which is constructed of identical shaped modules of decreasing size.” Throughout the course of five years, the 9' wide, 17' long and 26' high chapel was completed. No detail was spared including intricate wood carvings, stained glass windows, and many symbolic elements. The carving on the chapel door combines several themes including the burning bush, the fruit of the tree of knowledge and life, and the

recognition of respect for the land. “The positive response has been very numerous and gratifying,” said Lowell. “Friends frequently drop by with out of town visitors to show them the project. In addition, my grand niece was married at the chapel and it was a very special and rewarding event. The building has reinforced my awareness of the important things in life, love, respect for others, and an appreciation for the fragile gift of existence.”

With help from family and friends, several cedar, douglas fir, and garry oak trees were removed from the property and milled into boards and beams on-site with Lowell’s WoodMizer LT40 hydraulic portable sawmill. “The ability to turn wind falls and dead trees into useful lumber and to do so with considerable accuracy in thickness and relatively smooth surfaces is very valuable,” said Lowell. “Part of the project was intended to be a people thing, so a lot of people helped sawing lumber

because it’s fairly easy. It’s a satisfying thing to turn dead trees into boards.” Most of the chapel is constructed with half lap joints that were created by making several parallel cuts with a table saw, knocking out the pieces with a hammer, and sanding it down. “Structurally it is post and beam, but the structure is a little unusual because the beams are under almost no bending forces,” said Lowell. “Almost all of the beams are under either tension or woodmizer.com

10 Winter Sawing Tips

BLADE CORNER

1. Lower blade hook angles work better in frozen and partially frozen logs. Consider running 9°, Turbo 7, Turbo 747, or 4° blades 2. Narrow blade widths can have less resistance and effectively clean out frozen sawdust. Consider running 1-1/4" wide blades 3. Pay attention to partially frozen logs as the outside of the log freezes and thaws first 4. Keep feed rates up and consistent to reduce sawdust freezing on material 5. Monitor blade guides to ensure they are tight and level 6. Switch drive and idle side blade wheel belts 7. Check the blade guide arm to ensure it is tight 8. Use proper or slightly higher blade tension 9. Monitor drive belt tension to ensure it is tight 10. Use windshield washer fluid in blade water lubrication tank while sawing in 32° or below temperatures

NEW TURBO 747

HIGH-PERFORMANCE SAWMILL BLADES

Wood-Mizer introduces the Turbo 747 high-performance sawmill blade engineered for all band sawmill and resaw makes and models, horsepower ratings, and sawing applications. Available in SilverTip Carbon and DoubleHard High-Alloy steel material, Turbo 747 sawmill blades feature a deep capacity gullet for less sawdust on the board, extreme back angle for faster sawing speeds, and sharp penetrating points for increased sawing accuracy. “The feed rate is quite a bit faster,” shares Luke Eames of Holland Timber Co. in New York who runs an LT70 super hydraulic portable sawmill. “We can maintain faster feed rate through knots with minimal wave.” Wood-Mizer Blades Sales Manager Randy Panko says, “After extensive field testing, the new Turbo 747 blade has resulted in increased feed rate, accuracy, and sharp life in all horsepower levels and sawmill equipment models. With the blade’s steep sloped back angle and proven 7 degree hook angle, sawyers can take on even the most challenging sawing applications.”

The Wood-Mizer Turbo 747 sawmill blade is now available to order direct at 800.522.5760, online at woodmizer.com, or through authorized dealers. Turbo 747 Sawmill Blade Features • Compatible with multiple makes and models of band sawmill equipment • Resharpen with precision CBN grinding wheel technology • SilverTip Carbon and DoubleHard High-Alloy steel material • Available in any length • 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 1-3/4", 2" widths • .042", .045", .055" thicknesses • 7/8" tooth spacing • Made in the USA

Tips from the Saw Filers Corner If you are maintaining your own sawmill blades with Wood-Mizer blade sharpeners and tooth setters, here are a few tips from our ReSharp® blade sharpening specialists to ensure you receive consistent, sharp, and accurate blades with each sharpening. First make sure your blade maintenance equipment is cleaned thoroughly and inspect all electrical cords for damage. Second, inspect the blade for any teeth damage and begin with as clean of blade as possible by lubricating the blade before removing from your sawmill equipment to eliminate any pitch build-up or wash the blade before installing on your maintenance equipment.

W

hat started out as an idea, stemming from a magazine article, Steve Wilson felt that his persistence would get him to the final goal of a timber frame home. “After consultation with an architect, I started cutting trees,” said Steve. While the home stands tall in the mountains of Montana, the 450+ red oak beams were milled in North Carolina by Steve and his WoodMizer LT40 Super Hydraulic sawmill. Once cut, they were dried in a shed he built with the help of a friend. “After fabrication, the timbers were transported 10

to western Montana and the frame erected to be dried over the next two years. It took about four flatbeds to move the timbers,” said Steve.

to keep all of the transported hardwood. However, he was then able to fill his home with dozens of his own furniture creations using the lumber as well.

The timber frame home wasn’t the only thing on Steve’s mind while milling. He also cut a variety of hardwoods that he used to build furniture in North Carolina. “I also brought one flatbed of maple, cherry, walnut, oak, poplar & red cedar to Montana for my furniture making hobby,” said Steve. This caused a ripple effect that began the additions of more sheds, a shop and a sawmill shed at the Montana home

Steve used his Wood-Mizer for the milling process and said that the feature that assisted him the most during all of this was the hydraulic system. He was also able to save around $50,000 completing this project himself. “I had a more than full time job, so milling was primarily on the weekends,” said Steve. In a little more than five years, he was able to build what he now calls home.

ith an existing cabin already in place, Russell Jacobs used his expertise as an engineer, along with several helping hands from family and friends, to completely renovate his cabin. “My 80+ year old dad helped me make most of the flooring and shiplap siding in my home shop,” said Russell. He also had help from his sons who did the timber framing and his wife who kept the crew fed and lent her hand at installing the shiplap inside.

One of the amazing things about Russell’s cabin is the variety of wood used to complete the project. From the red oak floors and white pine shiplap walls to the white oak kitchen cabinets and the dawn redwood porch swing as an exterior accent piece, they all work together to give the cabin a unique, one of a kind look and feel. The cabin is also housing many of Russell’s furniture creations as well. “For furniture, last winter I made five of the exact same beds with five different woods. Cherry (cut on the

property), white oak, white ash, shag bark hickory and pignut hickory,” said Russell. Russell’s first portable sawmill, a 1988 LT40 model, was used for the majority of the project. However, Russell decided to upgrade to the LT40 WIDE portable sawmill a few years ago. “I enjoy building things,” said Russell. “I always wanted to build a cabin. I plan to timber frame a garage on site in the next year.” For now, he appreciates the positive comments he receives on his renovated cabin home.

e wanted to build a space for gathering with our large family and the trees we used needed to be removed as they were past their prime and rapidly deteriorating. We took down 75 white pine trees due to old age, and 10 white oaks for exterior siding. From them we built a traditional timber frame barn using mostly our own lumber. We milled all logs on our Wood-Mizer sawmill and sent timbers to a professional timber framing company, Signature Post and Beam, for planing and cutting joinery. The most helpful features of our Wood-Mizer sawmill included the lube system with Pinesol added to cut through

16

pitch/sap from pine, the hydraulic lift to safely elevate logs on the mill, and the board return was critical as we were milling siding boards. All traditional joinery, mortise and tenon with white oak pegs, was used in the construction of the barn and 10" board and batten white oak siding used square cut nails. Overall, the project took 3 years from dropping the trees to completion. This has been such a rewarding project, and ultimately has changed the direction of my career and our family. We now use the barn for family and community events, as well as a showroom

to bring customers in to see our work. We have had two open houses, with over 350 guests and everyone has been in awe over the beauty of the timbers and old school construction methods. This was a great family project for myself, my wife and our two young boys, which were there with us the entire time. Building this barn inspired me to leave my 20 year engineering career with John Deere, and purchase the timber framing company that helped us build the barn. We are now the proud owners of Signature Big Timbers LLC, and I get to work with my Wood-Mizer and timber framing tools every day!

S

awmilling isn’t just a hobby for Ross Flodder. Ross and his two daughters have made using his LT40 a family affair. More than 30 years and a million board feet later, his mill still gets the job done. “I have a 1988 LT40 Wood-Mizer and I have cut over a million board feet with it,” said Ross. “Even though my mill is old, it still does precision cutting.” When the Greentown, Indiana Lions Club came to Ross for a new addition to their Pioneer Village, he was up for the project. “I enjoy working on local projects and I was in the Lions Club for over 20 years,” said Ross. “Since I had milled lumber for 12 of the buildings (already on the fairground property), it was inspiring to cut the entire project from logs.” The Lions Club was in need of a Sheriff’s office that was similar to the late 1800’s era buildings in their village. Ross said that he used a lot of pine and ash for the project, as well as conventional construction methods. The Sheriff’s office contains everything needed to keep criminals from that time period at bay including two jail cells, iron doors, a loft upstairs to house the

18

Sheriff and even some cedar posts out front for horse hitching. The front porch has a cypress floor and the exterior was completed with poplar. “My cousin used his Wood-Mizer siding attachment for the exterior siding on the building,” said Ross. While this wasn’t the first project Ross had contributed his milling skills toward for the village, this one was particularly special due to every bit of the lumber being milled on his Wood-Mizer.

His handywork is constantly on display at the local fairgrounds. “Since these buildings are at the Howard County Fairgrounds, thousands of people have walked through the building and enjoyed seeing what that time period of buildings looked like. The Pioneer Village brings lots of people to the Howard County Fair every year, one of the largest events in Indiana, with characters in 1800 era costumes and demonstrations in each building.”

A

pples may not seem like a fair trade for handcrafting an apple wood casket, but that’s exactly the payment sawmiller Marlin Hartman received. “I was proud to do the project for a friend who gave me many bushels of apples to make cider and apple butter,” said Marlin. It may not be the norm this day and age, but some sawyers will do work according to the barter system. His friend, a 90-year-old fruit farmer still working on his own farm, gave Marlin apple trees and a walnut tree from his fruit farm and requested that he build a casket for him.

Even though some of the trees were short and crooked, Marlin said the accuracy of the cut with his Wood-Mizer LT40HD sawmill helped him to complete the project. “I was working with apple trees that were not very long, so I had to run the sides vertically,” said Marlin. “The top was done in two pieces so I could do those horizontally.” After sawing 250 board feet of apple wood and walnut, the 30" wide, 84" long, and 24" high casket was completed in a year and a half. While all of the woodworking was done by Marlin, he did have help

from his daughter, Erica and family friend, Carol, completing the lining of the casket. The beautiful wood casket, crafted with two variations of wood, had two completely different types of reactions to its creation. “Some people were not comfortable looking at the project and quickly left the shop. Others were very interested and wanted to know all about it,” said Marlin. However, the popular opinion from receiving more than 1,000 public votes seems to be that Marlin’s project was an absolute hit that resulted in this year’s People’s Choice Award. woodmizer.com

t the Susquehanna County Library in Montrose, Pennsylvania, visitors of all ages are welcomed by a beautiful cherry circulation desk along with a cherry, walnut, and maple donor tree. The two projects were milled and made by George Manns and his son Ben who both run custom woodworking businesses in the area. A Wood-Mizer sawmill owner since 1986, George used his LT40 hydraulic sawmill to saw 80% of the lumber needed for the two projects. “The log turner was an immense help maneuvering such a large log,” said George. “Also, the thin kerf on the saw blade

22

The Wood-Mizer Way Winter 2019

allowed us to get the most lumber out of the log so the entire piece is a match.” For his own woodworking business, George’s son Ben uses the original LT30 sawmill his father purchased nearly 35 years ago. The circulation desk is made from 50’ feet of panels, stiles, and rails that were made with lumber from a single curly cherry log. “Without the ability to saw the log used for this project, it is unlikely that I would have found enough lumber as figured and well matched,” said George. “It is possible I would have spent an extra $5,000 for the same quality lumber.” Designed by Ben, the desk was constructed using coping pattern cutters on a shaper with mortise and tenon joints to make the angles.

Framed in cherry, the donor tree features a walnut trunk and the leaves, made of curly maple with cherry accents, designate different levels of giving. “The donor tree recognizes people who donated to the library’s new building project,” said George. “When representatives from another library saw the donor tree, they requested a version for their own building.” George and his son were very satisfied to see the projects come together that show off the beauty of the wood. “Wood-Mizer started me sawmilling,” said George. “Sawmilling let me see the beauty in the wood I was cutting and that led to my lumber collecting which inspired my woodworking. Now I look for projects like this that will highlight the lumber in my collection.”

fter purchasing land near his home in Falls Creek, Pennsylvania, Gary Walborn and his wife Kay had a picnic on the property. Kay enjoyed the picnic so much that she encouraged her husband to build a pavilion on the property to serve as a gathering space to spend time with family and friends. For the project, Gary decided to purchase a Wood-Mizer LT35 Hydraulic portable sawmill to mill his own lumber. Excited to get started on the project, Gary began sawing the week after he received his sawmill even though the pavilion was scheduled for the following Summer. “A couple of weeks after we started the project, 24

The Wood-Mizer Way Winter 2019

we found out that my wife had an inoperable brain tumor,” said Gary. “Kay was hoping to see our pavilion completed and see our granddaughter’s wedding which was now scheduled to take place in the new pavilion, so our project was kicked into high gear.” Throughout the course of 9 months, Gary sawed hemlock and white pine logs and used mortise and tenon joinery to construct the framing of the pavilion. Gary praised the ability of the hydraulic log loader and log turner of his LT35 Hydraulic sawmill to complete the sawing for the project. Every day during the project, Kay would join Gary at the pavilion to see the progress. A kitchen and upstairs living area

were completed first which enabled Kay to enjoy time there before the rest of the pavilion was finished. “We got the pavilion finished in time for the wedding to take place, but Kay was too weak to attend and passed away the following day,” said Gary. “I dedicate this project to my late wife.” Kay’s dream of creating a gathering space for friends and family will live on through the pavilion for generations. “Everyone has loved the project and is surprised by the fact that we built it without any previous experience on a project this large,” said Gary. “Never underestimate your ability to learn and get something done that you’ve never done before!”

BOARD FOOT CLUBS In the early 1980s, Wood-Mizer established the One Million Board Foot Club for sawyers who had successfully cut 1,000,000 board feet of lumber on their Wood-Mizer sawmills. Please join us in welcoming the newest members to this elite group of sawyers. Scott Bean (Pennsylvania) Working as a tree service for decades, Scott would save the good quality logs for sawing and now has more than 100,000 board feet in his barn to start a furniture shop in his retirement!

Eugene Lemke (Wisconsin) “Do a good job and your name will get out to many other people.” Robert Terwilliger (New York) Robert’s largest project is sawing lumber for building a 40' x 60' post and beam barn.

Dennis Hoover (Connecticut) “Very satisfying and honored to be part of the Wood-Mizer tradition. My advice is to enjoy your work, serve your customers, and make flat accurate lumber!”

Steve Wilson (Montana) “My sawmill has been purely a hobby but it has saved me tens of thousands of dollars and given me immense satisfaction. I cannot say enough about the friendly attitude I received from Wood-Mizer technicians.”

Mike Buchheim (Iowa) “We wouldn't have the business we have without the Wood-Mizer saw and Wood-Mizer technical support.”

Charles Greene (New York) “The Wood-Mizer brand has helped me establish a very successful business that I don't think would've been possible with other brands on the market.” Matt Miller (Ohio) A Wood-Mizer owner since 2005, Matt has sawed more than 1,000,000 board feet of lumber with his LT40 hydraulic sawmill. Thomas Schrank (Indiana) On his 5th Wood-Mizer LT40 hydraulic sawmill, Thomas reached the milestone by sawing lumber for barns and fences while keeping his customers happy.

n southeastern New York State, The Mount Academy Christian highschool wanted to build an observation tower that overlooked the scenic Catskill Mountains while supporting their outdoor construction and woodworking classes. At The Mount Academy, students have the opportunity to build outdoor structures such as lean-tos, gazebos, and pavilions using traditional construction methods such as timber framing. Although the school has built many structures over the years, the timber framed observation tower 28

The Wood-Mizer Way Winter 2019

was one of the largest projects taken on by the students. Clem Robertshaw, an instructor at The Mount Academy, designed the 50' observation tower with a 18' square base and created the cut list for a local sawyer. Wood-Mizer portable sawmill owner, Milo Scott, was contacted by the school and helped by milling 6,000 board feet of white oak and pine needed for the tower. “I cut almost all of the lumber on my LT40 and donated it,” said Milo.

After the materials were cut, the students worked diligently for one year to prepare and assemble the stunning observation tower completely using wooden pegs with timber frame construction. “People love seeing the tower going up, also because it’s a great educational opportunity for the students,” said Milo. “It is truly an amazing structure that is very beautiful, sturdy, and built to last for decades. Without our Wood-Mizer, this project would never have been started.”
