ACADEMICS AT CHC

Up-to-date academic information, including grades and assignments, can be found online in the MyCompass portal.

DRESS CODE

The Cape Henry Collegiate dress code establishes the acceptable standard of appearance for all students in the School. Students are expected to abide by the dress code at all times while on campus. Good taste and common sense should dictate parental and student choice of school clothes. As a general rule, if you think something may not be appropriate, don’t wear it. It is impossible to anticipate every trend, therefore CHC reserves the right to determine if a student is dressed appropriately. Specific dress code information for each division can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook.

TECHNOLOGY

Cape Henry Collegiate provides students and faculty with a variety of devices and dedicated lab spaces to enhance technology instruction. Every student in kindergarten-grade 8 has a Chromebook assigned to them.

All students from grades 1-12 have a Google Apps account which allows them to create documents from any computer with a web browser and internet connection. Students in grades 6-12 also have a Google email account to be used for school-related work.

In addition to the desktops and laptops that are available for use by Middle and Upper School students, iPads are available for use in the Lower School. Students in the Lower School also engage in integrated and interactive technology instruction in The Kenison Digital Media Library.

HEALTH INFORMATION

The Cape Henry Collegiate health clinic is staffed daily by a registered nurse. Parents are asked to help ensure the wellbeing of all students by:

• Notifying the school nurse in writing of any health concerns or chronic health conditions that may affect your child’s school day.

• Encouraging good hygiene/hand washing practices at home and school.

• Keeping an ill child home and letting the school know if the illness is contagious.

HEALTH FORMS AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS

Cape Henry Collegiate utilizes Magnus Health, an online database for all student health records. The Commonwealth of Virginia School Entrance Health Form and all related health forms must be completed and uploaded via Magnus Health in MyCompass. Forms can be found online under the “Resources” tab of MyCompass. Please email Mrs. Kelly Hummel, head school nurse, at kellyhummel@capehenry.org for more information.

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

In 1924, Mrs. Helena Everett founded the Everett School in her summer home at the Oceanfront in order to provide an alternative to existing public education. The student body was composed of eight students, four of whom were her daughters. Within five years, it was necessary to relocate to a larger facility accommodating 170 pupils. By 1971, it was given a new name, Cape Henry School, and another new location at the old Virginia Beach General Hospital building. That same year, Cape Henry moved into its first building at its present site, a new gym that served as classrooms, and expanded curriculum offerings for kindergarten through grade nine. By 1975, Cape Henry was offering kindergarten through grade 12, and the first senior class of four students was graduated.

From the beginning, the Everett School, even in 1924 with an enrollment of eight students, was set on a course for excellence. Enrollment growth brought the addition of excellent faculty and the realization that Cape Henry Collegiate had established a reputation for innovation among the independent schools of Virginia and the nation.

Today, Cape Henry Collegiate is a coed, independent, college-preparatory school of more than 1,060 students, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, offering a full range of academic and nonacademic opportunities from prekindergarten through grade 12. The environment provided for each student attending Cape Henry, regardless of age, is one of support and challenge with the ultimate goal of placing responsible, educated citizens into our global society.

LEARNING THE LANGUAGE

ADVISORY AND COMMON EXPERIENCE

Upper School is a time of intellectual growth and preparation for college and this growth extends far beyond the classroom as we prepare our students to be leaders and citizens of character. The advisory program at Cape Henry works to ensure that each child is known and challenged and that their social and emotional needs are met. The common experience is the curricular foundation of a strong advisory program where students will be given guidance specific to each year of their development. This begins with the transition to Upper School and ends with programming specific to the college process. In between, developmentally appropriate topics such as inclusivity, mental health, time management, substance abuse, digital responsibility, self-awareness, self-advocacy, the college search process and community service are all explored.

ATHLETICS

In grades 9-12, Cape Henry has over 25 JV and varsity athletic teams that provide students the opportunity to participate in programs to encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, commitment, self-discipline and leadership. The athletic department places a strong emphasis on developing self-esteem while helping students experience the rigor and pleasure of athletics, the importance of cooperation and the value of competition. Junior varsity and varsity teams hold seasonal tryouts and the schedule for those can be found on the electronic calendar. For more information regarding athletics, contact Ms. Jeanne Short, director of athletics, at jeanneshort@capehenry.org. Athletic updates are available online and via the hotline at (757) 963-8228.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP/DEVICE POLICY

In the Upper School, teachers design lessons that promote a responsible use of technology in order to enhance the learning experience for each student. The Upper School follows a ‘bring your own device’ program where each student is responsible for bringing a fully charged laptop or tablet with keyboard to school each day. Students are allowed to wear smart watches but should silence their notifications while in classrooms. Students are allowed to bring a cell phone to school and can use them during breaks or lunch. Juniors and seniors may also use them during independent study hall. Otherwise, cell phones should be put away, turned off, and not to be used at all times. CHC expects all students to use their technology responsibly and for learning purposes only during the school day.

EXAMS

Most yearlong courses will have two comprehensive assessments in December and May. Attendance at scheduled exams is mandatory, unless a student is too ill to attend school or prior arrangements have been made with the Head of Upper School.

UPPER SCHOOL

LEADERSHIP

Upper School students at Cape Henry enjoy a wealth of leadership opportunities. Whether helping to reinforce the Honor Code as a member of the Honor Education Council, supporting and sustaining community outreach efforts as a club officer or helping to guide decision making regarding student activities as member of the Student Council Association, students in the Upper School are encouraged to share their ideas and take responsibility for creating a vibrant school culture.

LOCKERS

All Upper School students are assigned a locker. Students should not purchase a lock, as lock-free lockers are visible evidence and a reminder of Cape Henry Collegiate’s Honor Code.

LUNCH

Tuition and fees for CHC students include a cafeteria lunch program. Some students may prefer to bring all or a portion of their lunch from home. No tree nut products are allowed. Students will be responsible for bringing their own snacks, or may purchase snacks from vending machines or in Café Dolphin during break.
