I arrived on campus in 1982. The newly constructed Lower School and Upper School hallways, subsequently re-named Everett Hall, were flanked by a shiny new main office and library. The Middle School was housed in trailers, lovingly referred to as cottages, and The Perry Family Auditorium served as the new centerpiece — the jewel in the crown of our School. I was hired to teach second grade, coach junior varsity cheerleading and direct a yearly Middle School play, so having a dedicated auditorium on campus immediately grabbed my attention. The 200-seat space boasted a stage with a linoleum floor and small but functional rightand left-wing areas. The large black curtain opened and closed manually and took some elbow grease to get moving. The space had lighting and movable seating to accommodate its many functions. Multipurpose was the word of the day. Over the next several decades, “The Perry,” as it came to be known, was periodically enhanced, enlarged and reenvisioned. The stage flooring was upgraded to wood; the black curtain was exchanged for a heavy, regal red velvet curtain on a pulley system to make opening and closing an easier task; lighting was updated and a hanging microphone system was installed over the stage area for sound projection. During this time, there was not a single day that The Perry was not in use. Not only did the space serve as a theater for our growing performing arts programs, it was a gathering spot for assemblies, student programs, graduations, guest speakers, parent and grandparent gatherings, and faculty and staff meetings. It was the one place on campus we could all come together. It was our family space. On April 30, 2022, The Perry hosted its final curtain call. The beloved space will be taken down over the summer to make way for the Center for Innovation and Performing Arts. A plaque will be displayed in the new Kramer Family Theater commemorating The Perry Family Auditorium, which served our community so well for so many years. The Center for Innovation and Performing Arts will indeed look different, but the memory of The Perry will remain for the thousands of students, faculty, staff and families who benefited from its prominence on our campus—indeed, a jewel in the crown of our history.

Adia Colvin

By Mrs. Alexandra Oglesby, Director of Communications Cape Henry Collegiate’s Adia Colvin has been selected as a Cooke College Scholar, granting her up to $55,000 annually for four years to attend college. As one of 100 recipients out of more than 5,000 applicants, Adia beat incredible odds to win the scholarship. Then, she did it again, earning one of 300 awards given annually by The Gates Scholarship, and again, winning one of about 45 scholarships awarded each Adia and mom Ms. Tiffany Smith at the year by the Ron Brown Scholar 2022 Cum Laude Society Ceremony Program. Despite the improbability of winning these three prestigious scholarships, Director of College Counseling Mrs. Liz Stello was not surprised. “Knowing Adia and who she is, these are appropriate for a young lady of her caliber and personality and abilities,” said Mrs. Stello. “The odds of not just getting one but several of these scholarships – it’s the first time it’s happened in my 17year career.” In ninth grade, Adia came to CHC as a Cooke Young Scholar, a highly selective program established for students with financial need. “I didn’t think private school was going to be an option for me,” Adia said. “With the scholarship, I realized I had more options educationally, and I picked the right one coming to Cape Henry.” Also a member of CHC’s Laila Serpe Distinguished Scholars Program, Adia’s tuition and school expenses have been covered by generous donors, for whom she is grateful. The money, however, is only part of the value of these programs.

Adia went on to write a play based on the Greek Pharaohs in middle school and perhaps even more impressively, convinced her classmates to act it out. At Cape Henry, she has written, acted in and directed multiple theater productions, revived the School’s literary magazine, and is now a member of the prestigious Cum Laude Society, awarded to students among the top 20% of their class. Still, Adia has moments of self-doubt. “Imposter syndrome is real. The past me, who’s put in a lot of work getting good grades and honing the skill of writing and creating – she deserves a lot of things and she’s a remarkable person,” Adia said. “It’s really hard to be kind to yourself in the present moment and accept those things.” Coupled with that uncertainty is a feeling of excitement, as Adia prepares to graduate and looks ahead to college. “Adia believes that good art takes you places,” said Ms. Lilienstern. Indeed it has, sending Adia on a path to Rhode Island, where she will continue to focus on her creative writing at Brown University. “The clearest idea I have is that I’m going to be writing,” Adia said. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.” The Cooke, Gates, and Ron Brown awards are great honors, and CHC Upper School English teacher Ms. Robyn Judge believes they are only the beginning for Adia. “We are probably looking into the face of a Pulitzer Prize winner,” Ms. Judge said. “She is one of the most talented creative writing students I’ve had the pleasure of mentoring. She is genuine, funny, and brilliant, all rolled into one.”

“Options aren’t something people from less fortunate socioeconomic backgrounds are aware of,” Adia said. “Knowing there are options is the first step in being able to flourish.” The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Scholars Program and Cape Henry Collegiate provided the opportunity to flourish, but Adia’s incredible potential was long evident. “Adia’s writing reveals a deep thinker who has followed her own path,” said College Counselor Ms. Rebecca Lilienstern. “That path started when she wrote a small book when she was nine years old.”

It’s not often you meet a high school senior who can confidently speak and write at a high level in a whopping four languages, with her sights set on even more. Taylor Perry has an remarkable list of achievements: co-salutatorian, a variety of faculty- and department-selected awards, acceptance to the Governor’s Spanish Academy, Cum Laude, National and Language Honor Societies, and more. She applies her language skills outside of school as well, learning Portuguese to help a Brazilian acquaintance feel more welcome in Virginia Beach and engaging with customers and fellow employees in their native Spanish while working a part-time job.

Leonard Huang has an unusual ability to cheer and calm others, bringing a soothing atmosphere to any situation. He is a valued member of the National Honor Society, where he can be counted on to assist whenever he is available – which is often, because helping others is a priority for him. “I believe that relationships form the base of your mental strength and ability to grow. From assignments to life advice, the relationships you form within this close community will separate you from being a lost child to becoming a confident peer,” Leo said. “Your ability to laugh, struggle, relate to and understand others will be essential in understanding your future life and responsibilities.”

Each day, Carter Oppleman made his classmates and me smile. His sincere generosity and goodwill toward others made Cape Henry Collegiate a better place. It made our class “room” feel more like a class “home” where everyone felt welcomed and part of a special community. This summer, Carter has been selected to participate in the prestigious FBI FAIT Program for students interested in law enforcement, community safety and public service careers, as well as those interested in getting involved in community service. Carter proudly admitted that service to our country has always held a special place in his heart, which is why he plans to join the Air Force ROTC his second year at Virginia Tech. Carter will be majoring in Mathematics, a subject that “has always and will always” interest him.

Isabella Cooke

When Isabella Cooke graduates in May of 2022, she will be preparing for a very different college experience than the majority of her peers. Bella won’t likely be Snapchatting her new roomie to coordinate bedding and decor for her dorm room. Instead, Bella will be preparing for Cadet Basic Training at the United States Military Academy at West Point. While Bella admits some nerves around the demands of life in the Army, she has never shied away from a challenge during her time at Cape Henry and feels these past four years have helped push her. Bella will continue to rely on teammates on both the soccer field, as well as amongst the Corps of Cadets, as she will continue her athletic career at West Point.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the selfless women who inspire, motivate, and remind us to be a better person every single day.” That is CJ: thoughtful and aware. He sent that message to several women on the Cape Henry Collegiate campus whom he describes as “bonus moms” and expresses his wholehearted appreciation for the love and support he has felt from every member of the CHC family over the past four years.

NEXUS GLOBAL STUDIES:

South Africa

Cape Henry Collegiate’s Nexus Global Studies program takes students from Hampton Roads and turns them into citizens of the world, guiding them beyond their comfort zones and into experiences most travelers could only dream of. This year’s trip to South Africa, where students got to physically touch massive, endangered rhinoceroses as part of their conservation work, will go down as a defining journey in the program’s history. Chaperoned by Head of School Dr. Chris Garran and Assistant Head of Lower School Dr. Shamaine Williams, 15 students spent 10 days traveling between Johannesburg, the Nambiti Big 5 Private Game Reserve and St. Lucia. Although lavish accommodations are available at the 23,000-acre reserve, Nexus travelers went to a campsite deep into the bush, where they awoke one morning to see a giraffe wandering nearby. True to its name, the reserve is home to lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and the African buffalo, commonly known as the Big Five. CHC students got stunningly close to two of the five. “I thought I’d go down there, see a few animals,” said Ephram. “I didn’t think I’d go down there and hold up a rhino.” During their work with a conservationist group, Ephram and his fellow students watched as a helicopter herded a rhinoceros calf away from its mother. The goal was to tranquilize and dehorn the mother, making her less appealing to poachers, who seek out and kill rhinos for their horns. When the rhinoceros went down, the vet called upon our students to help hold her up as he sawed off the horn. The second close encounter happened as the students tracked an elephant through the preserve. “That was exciting. We were just driving, taking pictures, and I think we aggravated the elephant,” said Dr. Williams. “He charged at us and we had to get out of there.” In addition to gaining a greater appreciation for nature, the group came back with gratitude for their everyday lives. For Dr. Williams, who had known some of the students since prekindergarten, the maturity and growth exhibited during the trip filled her with pride. “Some of them want to travel more, a lot of them want to go back,” she said. “It was a great group of kids. I’d go anywhere with them.” Our CHC travelers weren’t the only early risers on the reserve! In addition to the big five, 40 additional game species, including giraffes, call Nambiti home.

Mr. Matthew Audette '92 Mr. Matthew Audette '92 returns to Cape Henry Collegiate with the hope of making a difference in the lives of the students. Because Cape Henry made a difference in his life and allowed him to realize that his potential was unlimited, Mr. Audette hopes to pay forward the foundation that the school provided. Mr. Audette graduated from Virginia Tech and currently serves as the managing director and chief financial officer of LPL Financial in San Diego, CA, where he has contributed to the firm's growth and profitability.

Mr. BJ Hughes Mr. BJ Hughes is the father of Cole '25 and Sofia '27 and the president and co-founder of VIcom — Virginia Integrated Communications. With more than 20 years of experience as a business owner, entrepreneur and leader, Mr. Hughes has co-founded multiple successful businesses across various industries in Hampton Roads. Mr. Hughes was impressed with Cape Henry Collegiate’s handling of the pandemic and is excited to get involved with Trustees who have made a difference. He looks forward to seeing how the Center for Innovation and Performing Arts will provide incredible opportunities for our students.

Dr. Reena Talreja-Pelaez is a proud parent of Mateo ‘29 and Lola ‘31. As a Board of Trustees member, Dr. Talreja-Palaez looks forward to shaping the future of her own children’s education and giving back to the community she fondly remembers from her own years as a student. Dr. Talreja-Pelaez is an alum of the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University Medical School. This fall, Cape Henry Collegiate’s 101 seniors will scatter to universities and colleges in 20 states, as well as the United Kingdom. “I don’t think I can remember a class that’s gone to every corner of the country,” said Director of College Counseling Mrs. Liz Stello. “I think that’s amazing.” Despite the COVID-19 pandemic shadowing half their Upper School experience, the Class of 2022’s accomplishments were remarkable. More than 80% of the class took at least one Advanced Placement exam, averaging a score of 3.9. They graduated with an average GPA of 3.8, and a majority of students who graduated cum laude were accepted by highly selective schools. While Mrs. Stello is proud of all those statistics, one stands out to her: 21 members of the Class of 2022 will attend a college where no other Cape Henry student currently attends, proving that these students are willing and ready for independence and new experiences. “During the pandemic, schools were shut down. They weren’t able to do a lot or have a lot to try, but they were still willing and ultimately chose to expand their comfort zone,” she said. “I’m always proud of that.” This year’s seniors were up against an unusually selective process as the priorities of colleges and universities change. Finances, campus resources, gender balance, diversity in terms of region, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation and more are all factored into whether a student will be accepted or not. “Institutional priorities are constantly shifting from year to year,” said Mrs. Stello. “Students were up against complete uncertainty, not only because of the pandemic but also because of the world we live in right now and what colleges are trying to create. That’s really hard as a 17-year-old kid, but I was impressed at their resilience and optimism.” CHC’s Class of 2022 was also more cognizant of cost than previous graduates, which contributed to a 10% spike in enrollment at in-state public colleges and universities. Impressively, 14 seniors will attend two highly selective in-state options: University of Virginia or William & Mary.

By Mrs. Jill Qualters, Upper School Counselor On average, the child of a military parent will attend between six and nine schools between kindergarten and senior year, according to MilitaryOne Source. The Cape Henry Collegiate community is lucky to have more than 175 of these resilient, adaptable and flexible students. It was a pleasure to celebrate them in April for the Month of the Military Child. We get some of these military children for only a year or two as they hop around the world. In other cases, we get to see them grow from toddlers into teenagers. For all, we support their needs, meet them where they are educationally and socially, and get to know and value them as community members. As a prekindergarten through 12th grade school, Cape Henry Collegiate has the unique opportunity for our older students to mentor and connect with younger peers. Caitlin Gentry ‘23 knows exactly what it’s like to be a military kid. She has navigated several long deployments and has watched her dad fly away more times than she can count. It is through her personal lens that the idea for the Military Kids Club was born. Her goal is to provide a place where students can come together and discuss the unique challenges of the military lifestyle, as well as offer support for military families in our community. The Month of the Military Child gave Cape Henry Collegiate an opportunity to show that support. During April, the School hosted two events for military children to connect, play games and learn more about each other. Cookies were consumed, art was created and friendships were formed. On April 14, the entire CHC community was invited to wear purple to show support and love to the military students. As a way to further illustrate our strong military presence, each military-affiliated student was given a CHC Dolphin pin to wear. The day was a visual reminder of how many military families we have to thank and celebrate. We are grateful to students Caitlin Gentry, Grace Sawyer, Grace Reynolds, Tori Winans, Elizabeth Wright, Louisa Pengilly, Kate Qualters, Mary Burke and Alaina Hecker for making our Month of the Military Child events possible.

BREAKFAST AND WALK

By Mr. Brian Walker '95, Director of Marketing and Publications When one thinks of a legend, images of celebrities and giant personalities of the past come to mind. Around the corridors and spaces of Cape Henry Collegiate, the word takes on a more specific meaning. Here, a “CHC Legend” is a student who has attended since prekindergarten, kindergarten, or first grade. While these students have seen changes great and small since they first walked through the doors of The Sims Lower School between 2006 and 2010, friendships and partnerships have endured through the years.

“Being able to grow up alongside my fellow Legends has created a bond between us and played a big role in making the whole class feel like a family,” said Kate McCray '22. On May 19, the School community gathered to celebrate these remarkable students and their families at our annual Legends Breakfast and Walk. In this penultimate on-campus event of their senior year, students and their families gathered in Café Dolphin for breakfast and reflective words from administrators, faculty and staff, along with the Legends themselves. “From memories of playing foursquare to writing lab reports for Mr. Rodgers, Cape Henry has left an unforgettable impression on the entire Class of 2022, let alone Legends,” observed Legend Connor Smith '22 during his speech before the invited guests.

“I would like to give thanks to the teachers and the faculty for my time at Cape Henry,” said senior Nate Hayes. “I’ve enjoyed every single moment of it.” While the festivities wrapped up in the bistro, the youngest members of our campus gathered in the lobby and hallways of the Lower School. Adorned in apparel reflecting their favorite schools, they began to sing the School’s alma mater song as the guests of honor emerged from their breakfast. One by one, prekindergarten students walked hand-in-hand with their designated Legend, taking them on a trip down memory lane. “It’s so beautiful seeing these familiar faces walking through these halls one last time as students,” kindergarten teacher Mrs. Carolyn Scullion said. “I remember teaching so many of them.”

Smiles, applause, high-fives and even some happy tears welcomed each student as they paraded by the very classrooms where they once attended class. “Having the privilege to watch these students’ growth from recess through graduation and from young children to responsible adults is a unique opportunity for faculty and staff at Cape Henry,“ said Safety, Transportation, and Risk Manager and former Lower School teacher Mr. Robert Woodhouse. The morning’s activities concluded with group photos of the Legends on the playground. As the students enjoyed one final recess as CHC students, it was apparent to all in attendance that the special connections these students formed over the years will endure well into the future. High expectations and attainable goals set the tone for the 2022 Dolphin Athletics Season. The community welcomed the return of the spring season at Cape Henry Collegiate with palpable energy and excitement. With 13 college-bound student-athletes demonstrating the commitment to athletics from the Class of 2022, Cape Henry Collegiate began an all-out sprint beginning in early March, concluding with a baseball state championship, 42 Individual TCIS and VISAA distinctions and three CHC records to add to the already impressive team accomplishments. Featuring one of the most talented senior classes in program history, the VISAA quarterfinalist varsity girls soccer team presented Cape Henry Collegiate fans with the first victory of the 2022 spring season, moving on to win 12 games and finishing with a remarkable 37-goal differential and eight shutout victories. Joining soccer in the VISAA quarterfinals, varsity girls lacrosse embarked on a challenging 2022 schedule with impeccable senior leadership and immense talent throughout the roster. Finishing the year with seven wins and just under 200 goals, varsity girls lacrosse will look forward to the returning core of athletes in 2023. Sharing the turf, varsity boys lacrosse welcomed Mr. Bobby Merryman for his first year as head coach. Tasked with developing the program from the ground up, boys lacrosse produced six All-Conference athletes, with two positioned to lead the 2023 Dolphin lacrosse program and the solid defensive unit returning next season.

Consistently setting records and netting nine top-three finishes in the TCIS finals, varsity track and field garnered high expectations for the program’s future. Three CHC records were broken by two sophomore athletes ready to return alongside the entire 2022 roster. Another program on the rise and deserving of recognition, varsity coed crew witnessed a 70 percent growth in size in 2022, led by Mr. Bob Alpigini at the helm for his first year as the Dolphins’ head coach. As the strong returning core continues to improve on the water, varsity coed crew will look to increase the level of competition for a program rapidly gaining popularity. Another head coach in his first year, Mr. Conor Somers will continue leading the growth of varsity boys tennis, set to return to four of the top six courts. Among the returning athletes are a 1st Team All-TCIS Singles recipient and an All-TCIS Tournament recipient who are itching to guide the program to a TCIS Championship after climbing the tournament rankings to finish as the runner-up in 2022. On the links, varsity golf will look to replace the scoring from two All-TCIS recipients, leading the Dolphins to TCIS runner-up honors in 2022. Scoring a low of 151 and averaging a remarkable 165 on the year, varsity golf will seize the opportunity to enhance upon the five returning members to the 2023 program. Sharing the respective diamonds of Cape Henry Collegiate, varsity softball and varsity baseball finished the season with four of the most respected pieces of hardware from the TCIS and VISAA. As softball finished the year with more victories than seasons past and a program loaded with young talent, the Dolphins returned with the TCIS Sportsmanship award, perfectly capturing the integrity and community values displayed by the athletes throughout the year. Rounding out the 2022 Spring Athletic calendar, varsity baseball completed a historic trifecta season with the program’s first Division I State Title. Also sweeping the TCIS hardware under the leadership of TCIS and VISAA Coach of the Year Mr. Tim Hummel, varsity baseball boasts a return of 20 members of the historic roster in 2023. With the phenomenal 2021-2022 Athletic Calendar coming to a close, the real work begins as Strength and Conditioning Director Mr. Phil Reichhoff continues to prepare returning and incoming Dolphin athletes for rigorous seasons ahead.

To be among the small percentage of high school student-athletes who go on to compete in college requires an immense amount of focus, determination, and commitment. Devoted to continuing the pursuit of athletic excellence, Cape Henry Collegiate will send 13 student-athletes on to compete at their respective colleges and universities in 2022-2023. After leading the Dolphins to three state championships in four years, varsity boys soccer captains Gavin Dooren and Kyle Usonis will continue their athletic excellence next year, with Dooren heading down the road to Old Dominion University and Usonis committed to Loyola University of Maryland. Joining Dooren and Usonis on the pitch, Virginia Marquette and Kate Shepherd will continue their respective soccer careers at Lynchburg University. Olivia Fout will take her talents to Auburn University, while Bella Cooke heads to the United States Military Academy at West Point. On the diamond, the Dolphins are equally proud to produce three collegiate baseball athletes. Kenny Schaedel will don the Yellow Jacket logo, playing for Georgia Tech University next year. Brendan Hawley has committed to Paul D. Camp Community College and Josh Holland is set to attend Bryant and Stratton College. In field hockey, Olivia Wallace will join two former Dolphins in Columbus, continuing the pipeline to The Ohio State University. George Cutler IV will travel to Ashland, Virginia, to compete for Randolph-Macon College basketball program. Rounding out the college commitments, Zach Granados will continue an impressive gymnastics career at the University of Michigan and Will Fryer will travel to the University of Tennessee to compete as a wing for the rugby team.

MR. TODD FELDMAN '98 Mr. Todd Feldman '98 recently moved back to Virginia Beach from New Smyrna Beach, Florida to join a wonderful medical practice. Mr. Feldman is a dermatology physician assistant and has working at Pariser Dermatology Specialists. Now that he is back in Hampton Roads, Mr. Feldman is looking forward to catching up with longtime friends and watching CHC lacrosse games with his nephew, Jack Berkowitz ‘30. MR. MOE STEVENSON '00 The alumni association welcomed Mr. Moe Stevenson '00 and his food truck My Mama’s Kitchen back to campus in May to host a lunch for the class of 2022. We welcomed the graduating class to the alumni association and enjoyed Mr. Stevenson’s delicious food. It was so wonderful to have Mr. Stevenson back on campus! 1 MRS. KAYLIN CARTER RASCHDORF '05 Mrs. Kaylin Carter Raschdorf '05 married in May to Mr. Jake Raschdorf in her parents’ backyard in Virginia Beach. Both of Mrs. Raschdorf’s children are CHC students, Raleigh entering kindergarten and Ainsley entering fourth grade in the fall. They are excited to be a blended family of six and currently reside in Chesapeake. Mrs. Raschdorf recently started a new job with Lumos Fiber, heading up the treasury department and her husband has started a local contracting business doing home repairs and renovations. 2 MR. Patriot (MIM-104) is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defense system to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft.

Dr. Kline matched at the University of Virginia for her residency in anesthesiology. MR. JACKSON SKEEN '14 Mr. Jackson Skeen '14 graduated from Yale Law School where he served as an articles and essays editor on the Law Journal. He will be moving to Billings, MT in August to clerk for a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. MS. HANNA BLEZNAK '15 In May of 2021, Ms. Hanna Bleznak '15 graduated from Moravian University with a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy. Since then Hanna has moved from her first job in Suffolk to work as an occupational therapist in Arlington, Virginia. Hanna is engaged and is planning a wedding for July of 2023. MS. MADISON LEVINE '18 In May, Ms. Madison Levine '18 graduated from Longwood University with a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Supply Chain Management. As the vice president of her class, Ms. Levine was one of Longwood University’s student commencement speakers. In June, Ms. Levine began working for the Target Upstream Distribution Center in Suffolk as an operations manager. 2ND LT. JOSEPH BURROUGHS DAIL '18 On May 14, 2nd Lt. Joseph Burroughs Dail graduated from Hampden-Sydney College. He was commissioned into the Army National Guard as a second lieutenant and will be training to fly UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters at the US Army Aviation Base at Ft. Rucker in Alabama. 5 MS.
