Dear Cape Henry Community, Recently, we enjoyed a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction for our new 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Science and Technology Center. Six weeks later, our students and adults gathered for an exhilarating “Topping off Ceremony”. Those who joined in the placement of the student-autographed, crowning steel beam watched in amazement as it was connected and secured to a very deep concrete base. We all marveled at the progress and acknowledged that the foundation was well built and will support Cape Henry programs for generations to come. This special event signaled the completion of the first phase of construction and highlighted the promise of exceptional educational opportunities for our students. While reaching this exciting and very visible construction milestone is important, we all know that the true meaning of building foundations in education can only be found in the quality of instruction offered in the classroom, on the stage, and on the playing fields. Such important, student-centered foundations are built one lesson at a time in a day-to-day progression that strengthens over time and ranks well above the qualities of steel and concrete. At Cape Henry, our teachers build solid, lifelong foundations of success; foundations that will last a lifetime. They do this by enriching the educational environments and by instilling the love of learning through their superior instruction in class and their leadership in social activities such as Fall Festival, Grandparents’ Day, Field Day, holiday programs, and many more. Because of our teachers, Cape Henry students are learning the value of family and community through activities such as Spirit Week, Nexus, student elections, senior speeches, concerts, plays, peer leadership efforts, school-wide pep rallies, and important assemblies that teach the values of a relevant life. These lessons will serve them well as they grow even stronger with each new experience. As you know, the Cape Henry community is developing one of the most advanced Prekindergarten through Twelfth Grade science and technology centers in the country. Yet, as the excitement builds and construction proceeds, our many talented teachers currently assisting in the project have not lost sight of what Cape Henry has done so well for so many years; these teachers continue to provide our young learners with the most solid foundations for life – a meaningful education that is second to none. Of course, we will have many opportunities to acknowledge our many supporters as we proceed with the construction of our giant “Science Project.” In the meantime, please join me in thanking our resident construction professionals - our wonderfully talented teachers - for all they do for our students each hour of every day.

We are Building Foundations at Cape Henry…

He has also been involved within the housing industry on home warranty programs, workers compensation insurance, and other related issues. John has also devoted much of his spare time to numerous community service projects. John and his wife, Wendy, have two children enrolled at CHCS: Samantha, Grade 7, and John, Grade 5.

Mrs. Leslie Quisenberry–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in 1977, Leslie attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI) where she graduated with a B.S. degree in marketing management. aying the Groundwork for Success Ceremonial Groundbreaking– ––––––––––––––– The stage has been set between The Perry Library and The Sims Lower School building for the new 40,000 square-foot state-of-the-art Science and Technology Center. During the late summer, the construction area was fenced off, materials and equipment were brought in, and much of the foundation was begun. The Ceremonial Groundbreaking took place on Friday, August 25. Following brief remarks by Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mr. James H. Sparks, Dr. John P. Lewis, and Mrs. Julie Scherrer, the attentive First Grade student Reilly Perry audience cheered as shovels of earth were turned by three representatives shared his enthusiasm. of the Student Council Associations, and a representative from each of the major donors’ families. Founders, friends of the School, business partners, donors, parents, faculty, and students were in attendance. Through generous support from all of the School’s constituents, $5.5 million was raised in a two-year period which allowed this groundbreaking to take place. With the building taking roughly 12 months to complete, the goal is to raise another $1 million to fully outfit the building, which will bring the total raised to $6.5 million. This is an extremely exciting milestone in the life of Cape Henry. Not only will this facility enhance our students’ education by boosting the science and technology programs in all three Schools, but aesthetically, its presence will complete the campus master plan.

Trustees and Former Trustees: Mr. Keith Hathaway, Mr. Chris Perry '92, Mrs. Suzanne Reigel Breit, Congressman Owen B. Pickett, Mr. Scot Creech, Mr. Jim Sparks, Mrs. Leslie Quesenberry, Mrs. Kim Wheeler, Mr. Michael Gianascoli '89 , Mr. Craig Mytelka, Mrs. Maureen Olivieri, and Dr. John Lewis.

Signing the Beam and the Topping Off Ceremony ––––––––––––––– A Topping Off Ceremony is a time-honored tradition that marks the completion of the first stage of construction, which is typically the framing of the building. The last beam to be placed in the roof section is usually signed, and an evergreen tree and American flag are attached to the beam. The beam is then hoisted to its final resting place, and the tree and flag remain until the roof is attached. In keeping with tradition, students, teachers, staff, parents, board members, volunteers, and friends were invited to sign a freshly painted steel beam that was accessible to them for several days. That signed beam was then placed atop the new building in a Topping Off Ceremony signifying the completion of the first stage of construction and was enthusiastically witnessed by our students, faculty, and guests. Former CHCS Trustee Mrs. Wendy Sims stops by Cape Henry to sign the beam.

Donors to the Science and Technology Building through November 15, 2006

The Prekindergarten students autographed the beam with purple thumb prints. Between classes, Lower, Middle, and Upper School students and faculty could be seen sharing pens and excitement for the signing.

randparents’ Day

2006

A D ay o f H u g s a n d S m i l e s

Thrilled to share in the excitement with their grandchildren, grandparents filled the halls and classrooms of The Sims Lower School. Each year, the Lower School students host a Grandparents’ Day celebration to honor their loved ones and to show off their school. It is always a day filled with stories, love, hugs, and smiles. Many grandparents appear regularly on campus throughout the year, volunteering around campus, but many make a special trip from out of town just to share this “grand day” with their grandchildren. Here are some of the Lower School students with their grandparents and special friends.

2006-2007 Annual Giving Campaign

Booster Club President Cheney Cole

Last year, our Annual Giving campaign reached record breaking levels in the amount of dollars raised for the benefit of our students. Our goal this year is to maintain our dollar levels, while also increasing our level of participation. Last year, 53% of our parents participated in the Annual Giving Campaign. Our goal for 2006-2007 is to increase our parent participation rate to 65%. We can do it, with your help! Please, if you have not already done so, consider making a gift, at any level, and joining the hundreds of families investing in our children’s education and future! What We Our students’ awareness of their global connection… Peggy Kellermeyer says, “What do we love about Cape Henry? Meeting all of the international families, especially the Greenop Family.” Doug and Will Kellermeyer (Eighth and Sixth Grades) had a chance to visit their good friends, Harriet and Christopher (Kit) Greenop, in Belgium. Doug and Kit met at CHCS in First Grade and have been friends ever since. While in Brussels, Doug had a chance to visit Kit’s International School where many classes are taught in French. The boys saw trenches from World War I, learned about Belgium Kit Greenop, Doug Kellermeyer, customs, and really enjoyed the Mary Beth Greenop, and Will Kellermeyer enjoying hot chocolate chocolate!

About Cape Henry Our families welcoming others into our community… Precilla Fuller says she loves, “meeting and welcoming new families into our community at the annual African-American Back-to-School Cookout.” Well-known actor Michael Beach joined Precilla and Kalisa Fuller (Third Grade) and Erin Scherrer (Fourth Grade) for this photo at a picnic welcoming new families to Cape Henry Collegiate School this past August. Mr. Beach whom you may have seen in films such as Waiting to Exhale and Soul Food, or in one of his recent TV roles on ER or Third Watch, was attending the event as a friend of Dwight and Angela Freeman.

Since 2003, junior Ally Brooks has been involved with a summer program known as Rustic Pathways, a summer camp program in Costa Rica dedicated to fun, education, community service, and the “world experience.” In addition to engaging in sports and outdoor activities, Ally has taught English, painted, helped prepare the town of Caña Negro for a visit from a major political figure, and cooked for the La Paz annual Sugar Cane Festival. She also took Spanish lessons daily and lived with a non-English speaking family. Recently, Ally was nominated as a “Star Alumni” by the leaders of the Rustic Pathways program. Along with their nomination of Ally was a statement that read, “Nominated students are individuals who have exhibited the enthusiasm, maturity, heart, balance, and intensity we feel makes a great Rustic Pathways participant.” Parents Michele and Ned Brooks said, “Cape Henry played a large part in preparing Ally for these kinds of life-experiences, especially when the first visit unaccompanied to Costa Rica was at the age of 14.” They feel the mission of the organization which states in part, “… to build a cultural bridge that leads to greater global understanding and cooperation” very much mirrors CHCS’s and the Nexus program’s missions. Ally Brooks with her “Little Sister” in La Paz, Costa Rica. “Pura Vida, Ally!”

The G.I.R.L.S. (Girls In Real Life Situations) Club and their “Think Pink” campaign sought to raise awareness about breast cancer and to support their friend, senior Britney Myers, who lost her mother to breast cancer when she was in the Eighth Grade. The girls achieved this loving display of support by promoting education and awareness for students and faculty by making announcements, providing educational materials, distributing pink ribbons, holding assembly programs, and selling “CHC Thinks Pink” T-shirts. In late October, students, faculty, and staff wore the shirts and formed a human pink ribbon on the baseball field. The students sold over 500 T-shirts and donated over $1,500 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Senior Britney Myers, the chairwoman for the campaign, along with other G.I.R.L.S. Club members, were in a feature article in The Virginian-Pilot’s Beacon and were featured in news segments on WVEC TV-13 at 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.

Our students supporting the community, but also each other…

Our programs giving our students a distinct advantage… The music technology lab has been fully upgraded to include some of the most advanced music scoring and recording hardware and software in the industry. Our students are being prepared to pursue college degrees in music that include music business and music technology, in addition to traditional careers in performance. Senior Brian Sanders is a perfect example of how this technology is already benefiting and influencing our students. He is currently working on some of the most advanced music software and hardware in the music business including Finale (for writing music), Pro Tools (which is used by the biggest recording studios in the country for recording CDs), and a host of digital hard disk recorders. For one of his projects, Brian has taken Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five,” originally written for five jazz musicians, and has rewritten it for a group of 70 students, our Upper School Concert Band. Once his composition is completed, he will then teach it to the concert band, and will record a CD using some of the most advanced digital recorders on the market. This pursuit will undoubtedly assist Brian’s future plans to major in music technology in college. CHCS Band Director, Dr. Karendra Devroop stated that he knows of no other Upper School students in the country doing this type of production work.

Our award-winning faculty working alongside alumni for the betterment of the entire community…

Mr. Robert Woodhouse shown here with CHCS 2003 graduates who also worked with the Horizons Hampton Road Summer Program this past summer - Teraya Knight and Rachel White.

Mr. Robert Woodhouse, or “House” as he is affectionately referred to by his former students, is the real life personification of the term, “Gentle Giant.” A spectacular teacher of small children, “House” also serves as the Assistant Director of Event Staffing Inc, which provides staffing for most of Hampton Road’s concert venues including the Hampton Coliseum, Scope, the Virginia Beach Amphitheater, Beach Events, and numerous other special events. He is also the Head of Security at NTELOS Pavilion in Portsmouth. It is not unusual to see former students, now in college and beyond, spot “House” at a crowded concert and hustle over to give him a hug or a handshake. Likewise, when his Horizons Hampton Roads students return to Cape Henry each summer, they always seek out a moment to reconnect with this huge influence in their lives… and also to get a hug from this former football player who holds a master’s degree in education and is a graduate of Norfolk State University. “House” is truly one-of-akind. At the Horizons National Meeting in Connecticut this fall, Mr. Robert Woodhouse was unanimously selected as the recipient of the Jeniam Foundation, Lyn McNaught National Teaching Award. This prestigious award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding teaching in the Horizons program.

Why We Love Cape Henry Our families building lifelong friendships… The Breakfast Bunch by Arlene Ingram “This weekend is going to be agonizing!” proclaimed Connie Harris, the “glue” of The Breakfast Bunch, five mothers who have been meeting regularly for breakfast since their children began school at Cape Henry, most as long as sixteen years ago. “Duke and JMU play Club Baseball in Harrisonburg on Saturday.” That would be insignificant to most parents of Cape Henry alums, but to “The Moms” (as they are affectionately known by their eight children), it meant they would have to root for both teams as Donna’s son, Mark (Duke), and one of Connie’s twins, Jerry (JMU), were competing against each other. Competition is antithetical to this cadre of women who value supporting, encouraging, and celebrating their children. The relationship that began in the halls and carpool lines at Cape Henry was solidified through their participation in the Cape Henry Parent Groups through the years. They have moved from being friendly with each other, to being friends, to embracing other members of the group as extended family. Even though all but one of their children has now graduated from Cape Henry, they still meet regularly. Usually, they gather twice weekly for a quick breakfast (always at a location close to the School) but this time, they agreed to meet for lunch so I could join them. They bubbled excitedly (as if I weren’t there) in spontaneous conversation about their children, their families, good recipes, gardening, and supporting each other. The conversations varied, often with lightening speed, but the underlying theme has been consistent: unconditional, mutual love, acceptance and appreciation for each other as they have navigated difficult personal issues, as well as the predictable assortment of parental challenges (driving, dating, adolescent-speak, or lack of adolescent-speak). They willingly offer each other a buffet of advice, generously sprinkled with dollops of laughter. Who would have thought that the First Grade Halloween Parties would turn into bonfires on the beach and to multi-family year-round traditions that continue to be an essential part of the lives of their children? The individual members of the group share little in common, they are of different cultural backgrounds, have varying personal interests and political beliefs, and different religious preferences; yet, the similarities in their values (including education) and their belief in a strong family orientation sustain the group. The Breakfast Club’s inauspicious beginning, coffee and conversation, formed the foundation of friendships that will last a lifetime. And, besides, to them, it is not about winning or losing Club Baseball games. “The Moms”: Connie Harris (Jack '03 and Jerry '03), Nandini Patel (Nishant '03 and Nira '07), Donna Redmond (Missy '05 and Mark '03), Allison Schaefer (Ashley ’03), and Barbara Mistron (Stephen '03).

Our volunteers make things happen… Successful events and programs thus far show how important our parents and CHPA are to the entire Cape Henry community. Thank you.

News: Lower School Goes Global

First Grade– ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Mrs. Leesa Hannah’s First Grade class is actively engaged in a global exchange of letters with a first and second grade class at Kodaikanal International School in India. The goal is to increase the global awareness of our Lower School students by studying Indian geography and culture as well as refining their writing skills. Of course, the personal artistic expressions add a little extra art practice, too.

Fifth Grade–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Mr. Phil Stewart’s fifth graders are fully engaged in a similar exchange with Woodstock International School in India. Mr. Stewart’s first letters were via regular mail, but the program will soon evolve into an email exchange with video streaming and possibly video conferencing between our two schools.

CHCS Welcomes New Faculty Mr. Rocco Mansueto, the newest member of the Counseling Department, received his master’s degree in school guidance and counseling from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. While in Cleveland, Mr. Mansueto worked as an Injury Prevention Technician at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. In addition to his role as a guidance counselor and study skills teacher, Mr. Mansueto is the varsity wrestling coach. As a competitor at Cleveland State University, Coach Mansueto was a conference champion and three-time NCAA Division I wrestling qualifier.

This was an amazing fall season! One of the most successful fall seasons in the history of the School. All of our team sports that were eligible to play in the state tournament qualified and represented us in fine fashion. We won 78% of our competitions, finished 3rd in the TCIS Sportsmanship votes, and produced a State Champion from the Cross Country Team. Not a bad day’s work! This success is greatly attributed to our extraordinary coaching staff and the talents and dedication of our student athletes. The 2006 Class of Captains: TJ Maroon, Brandon Faubert, Shelby Evans, Libi Henley, Sarah Potter, Chad McEnroe, Niraj Patel, Coleman Newell, Kelli Morrissey, Colleen Zoretic, and Emily Burke, led these teams throughout the season with characteristics of the types of leaders that we want to receive a diploma from Cape Henry. Cape Henry Collegiate School resumed the role of hosting a Cross Country Meet this year at Mt. Trashmore. We will continue this tradition in order to support and appreciate the efforts of such a spirited group of student athletes. Captains Chad McEnroe and Kelli Morrissey led their respective teams all season long with the up and coming talents shining through in the likes of David Blanchard, Meg O’Brien, Will Overman, and Jazz Rozier. Coaches Buzz and Lori Cooper were thrilled with the efforts and improvements made with the 2006 Cross Country Team. Special congratulations to State Champion Kelli Morrissey for finishing in 8th place at the State Cross Country Meet. TCIS Coach of the Year for 2006, Kristen Wheeler, once again prepared her team to compete with the best teams in the conference, Tidewater area, and state as they finished with a record of 173. Senior Captains Sarah Potter and Libi Henley brought a wealth of experience and direction to carry on the Cape Henry Field Hockey legacy. Cape Henry defeated many tidewater ranked teams early in the season to capture the Suffolk Invitational Tournament. They went on to play in the TCIS Championship game and State Semifinalist Game to represent this program as one of the best in the State. The Senior Class of Libi Henley, Sarah Potter, Stephanie Grune, Emily Cole, and Jackie Miller will be irreplaceable. Their contributions will live on in the trophies and banners left behind, in addition to their winning dispositions. More great leadership in the roles of TJ Maroon and Brandon Faubert fielded one of the finest Varsity Boys Soccer Teams ever to wear the red and grey. Coach David Brun orchestrated his team to the TCIS Championship game, only to fall in penalty kicks to Norfolk Academy. Cape Henry played the top ranked teams in the State in very competitive matches to earn a #7 State Ranking. Eleven Seniors will leave this program, (Robert Morey, Dan Bain, Jeff Bradley, Tyler Jacobson, Danny Lee, Brad Neubeck, Jonathan Speight, Cole Mason, Pat Green, and the previously mentioned Captains) and all of their names are deserving of recognition. Henri Noordanus and Carter Mavromatis will be given the task of rebuilding behind the play of Matt Cheniae, Redding Deurance, and Glenn Sullivan. Cape Henry finished with a record of 11-7-2. Great season, gentlemen! The Varsity Girls Tennis Team under the direction of Carol Bulkeley, finished 3rd in the TCIS, and qualified for the State Tournament for the first time in school history. Senior Colleen Zoretic and junior Emily Burke directed their team to a 9-5 finish, overall. Eighth grader Karling Watson played in the top position all season competing on a level playing field with much older opponents. Seventh grader Brittany Pilkington brings a beautiful, fluid style of tennis at the #2 seed. The play of Georgia Putney, Kelsey Bergen, Maddie Baine, Jamie Mandell, and Mary DiGeronimo lay the foundation for great tennis in the future of Cape Henry Girls Tennis! The Boys Varsity Volleyball Team brought home the first ever, TCIS Regular Season Championship compiling a history making record of 19-3. TCIS Coach of the Year, Chris McGarity put the task of leadership on Captains Niraj Patel and Coleman Newell and they took this team to a

whole new level. Cape Henry captured the Runner-Up Trophy in the TCIS Tournament behind the strong play of Chris Rosa and Coleman Newell. Wes Forehand, Jonathan Whited, Andrew Snyder, Dylan Shiflett, and John MacConkey provided a strongly skilled foundation throughout the season. The favorable rookie play of Clark Templeton, Eric Ambrosino, and Robert Knuth will be the guiding force in years to come. Coach Marck Weiss combined the veteran play of Shelby Evans, Casey Scherrer, and Lizzie Wagner with the highly skilled play of newcomers Morgan Freeman, Kate Pleasants, and Paige Wheeler to qualify for the State Girls Volleyball Tournament and finish with a #8 State Ranking. Another amazing senior class, including Katie Pawlowski, Britney Myers, Kelsey Mahoney, Brianna Meder, and the aforementioned, pass on their years of volleyball experience to a ready and

willing group of underclassmen. Special appreciation for the incredible efforts of our Junior Varisty and Middle School Athletic Teams. Coach Scott Gray’s Boys JV Soccer Team had many moments of spectacular play led by Tyler Faubert, Delaney Oksman, Ben Green, and Kevin Hamele. The JV Field Hockey Team, under the helm of Laura Lechler, had their best finish in recent years relying on the play of Betsy Nash, Megan Bradley, Chloe Snyder, Aubrey Northam, and Amalia Riess. Coach Wendy Lewis continues to be a formidable conference opponent compiling yet another stellar season with Avi Goldman, Amanda White, Shelby Spera, Alice Shipp, Amy Bennis, and Maddie Houck, just to name a few. Coach Sue Chapman managed an impressive JV Tennis season finishing 3rd in the conference behind the strokes of Nikki Mandell, Caroline Finley, Kristen Vretakis, Madison Sabol, and Erin Kirkpatrick. Ed Faubert, Bob DeManche, Susan Eichener, and Bonnie Varney coached our Middle School athletes to promising futures. It is important to note our All-State recipients for the fall season: Libi Henley (1st Team-Field Hockey), Kelsey Scherrer (2nd Team-Field Hockey), and Kelli Morrissey (1st Team-Cross Country). The boys soccer award winners are yet to be announced, but TJ Maroon and Robert Morey are favorites. So, to conclude, as you can see, Cape Henry had many accomplishments and a fantastic fall athletic season is in the books. And, it was a pleasure to watch our leaders lead, and our youth grow!
