On the Voyage to Excellence Have you ever wondered why graduation, a time when we celebrate the completion of a long educational journey, is called Commencement? Commencement – according to the dictionary – means “to commence, to begin, to start anew, to set sail.” It is the act or process of bringing or being brought into existence. It is synonymous with inauguration, and inception. When we think about it in that sense, that is what graduation truly is. It is not an ending as our students might have thought – it is not a destination. It is a beginning - a time to gather all of our strength, values, knowledge, and life experiences and to “set sail” into the unknown. In June, we sent our graduates off into their “unknown.” This past spring, we held reunions honoring the Classes of 1976, 1977, 1982, 1992, 1996, 1997, and 2002. It was gratifying to see where their journeys had taken them thus far - accomplished, all. Yet, no matter where their locations happen to be at the moment, their journeys are far from finished. Only time and fate know what incredible experiences lie before them or where their true destinations lie. This fall, our entire school sets sail towards a fairly predictable “unknown.” With the completion and christening of the new Science and Technology Center, with certainty, it will impact many lives. Just imagine what lessons remain to be learned, what mysteries remain to be unlocked, and what amazing thoughts remain to be revealed that might potentially influence all of mankind. Commencement is a time to revel in all of our accomplishments. It is a time to stand high atop our proverbial mountaintops and look back into the valleys of our past. That journey is what brought us to this point and essentially made us who we are. Now we must peer out into the mist that is the future and imagine all that we can be. As one academic years closes and another slowly comes into focus, we, as a community, can look back with pride at where we have been and can join together with anticipation and excitement at what our common future holds. We can touch base with our graduates during their first years away, and we can again take pride in knowing we prepared them well for wherever their personal journeys may take them. It is time to commence being satisfied that we, all that is Cape Henry Collegiate School, have together, done a good job. It is time to take a breath - smile - and prepare to commence, yet again...

rom the Board of Trustees At their last regularly scheduled Board meeting of the year, the CHCS Board of Trustees said a fond farewell to Mr. Ned Brooks whose terms expired this June.

Mr. Edwin C. Brooks Ned provided wonderful years of leadership especially in the areas of development and Board policy making. As Chair of the Development Committee, he demonstrated true leadership as he guided his committee in important strategic planning sessions. His open-mindedness and keen sense of humor allowed the School to examine current school policies and develop a five-year plan to strengthen the Cape Henry community while building new relationships. Ned accomplished this all while maintaining a cheerful attitude.

The 2006-2007 Annual Giving Fund

for

Excellence

The Annual Giving Fund serves as the foundation of our fundraising initiative at Cape Henry Collegiate School. Tuition covers approximately 88% of educating each child, and the difference is made up of generous tax-deductible donations to our Annual Giving Fund. We encourage all of our parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, and friends of the School to contribute in any way they can. Remember, it all comes back to our children as we provide an exceptional educational experience. Please join us in our 2007-2008 campaign, and a big thank-you to everyone that helped to create another record-setting year in 2006-2007.

CHPA Kind of Year

Our complete thanks are extended to the CHPA Advisory Board and this year’s Executive Officers for the continuation of exemplary programs and for the addition of numerous “community-building” activities this year. All were successful and all added to the quality of life for our Cape Henry community. New programs for 2006-2007 were: the parents’ survey, the Volunteer Information Fair, “Bringing Out the Best in Your Child by John K. Rosemond” (in conjunction with the Guidance Department), the Dolphin Doubles Round-Robin Tennis Social, and the Fall Festival Family Movie Under the Stars. All of these important and fun-filled events were in addition to the other annual CHPA endeavors: the Beach Party on the Lawn; the New Family Focus; a record-breaking $56,000 in Innisbrook Gift Wrap Sale; the Safe Homes program; the Fall Festival; the Staff Appreciation monthly events; the After Dolphin Doubles Tennis Tennis Tournament Prom party; the Community Projects and Online Shopping program; the Hospitality Committee; the Putting Contest at the CHCS Golf Tournament; supporting the volunteer needs at the CHCS Golf Tournament, Grand Auction, Annual Giving Campaign’s Phonathon, Grandparents’ Day, and Back-to-School Nights; Krendl the Magician; and record-breaking numbers of room parents, committee members, classroom helpers, and drama, library, and Brooks Family Spirit Store volunteers! Congratulations for a tremendously successful year! Staff Appreciation John K. Rosemond Presentation

The Desert

Do you have a special place you like to be, somewhere you can be yourself? I do. My special place is at my beach house on the Chesapeake Bay. There is a beach in the back of our house with rocks along the sides of it and an empty field in the front. When my family is there, we swim, fish, crab, hunt for sea glass, run, play games, sail, canoe, and do many other fun things. I can see the waves splashing on the beach and watch fish swimming in the shallow water. I can look for crabs scurrying along the sand and smell and taste the sea salt in the air. I also enjoy searching for shells and sea glass and watching sailboats floating in the distance. One thing I love to do there is lay on our beach with the sand between my toes and feel the wind blowing in my face. It feels wonderful! One of the best things is at night, when you get in bed, you can hear the waves lightly splashing on the shore and the Junebugs singing. Different people have different favorite places, but mine just happens to be Deltaville. What is yours?

Alex Allen

His sandy back is scorched by the fierce sun Cracks running down his arms Cacti and shrubs growing in his hair At night animals come out of their dens And scamper on his hilly shoulders The sun then rises and sends them back Into their sandy burrows Little moisture crosses his parched lips.

Life of a Leaf

by

Katie Cozza

Warm inside this cozy branch of mine, I feel the sun telling me to push my way out. I struggle and now I’m free, Slowly stretching to wake myself. The sun is feeding me nutrients. Feeling the warm air on my green skin. Swaying back and forth during a rainstorm, I cling on for dear life in a spring thunderstorm, When the storm clears out, I am as wet as can be. As the season ends, my green skin begins to turn, Brown, orange, yellow, and gold, I feel very old and it’s coming towards my time, When the winds blow, I fall and die. Soon the sun’s warmth dries me.

The Year You Were Here

Dan Bain by

Mr. Paul G. Lankford

A Reflection for Eighth Graders on the Occasion of Graduation from Middle School You were always going to leave, And, besides, that’s what students do. You arrived last August to size me up. Was I wearing a raspberry-colored coat? Or was it a turquoise blue one You thought only an old geezer Would wear to an old geezers’ dance? But it was part of my trying to say This year would be different. And I hope that it was, despite The literature, the grammar, The marks on your papers, And all the other things that happen Every year in English class. English is English, I’m afraid. And I did what teachers do, And you did what students do, Or what students sometimes won’t. This year was no different that way.

While pain at times forced My focus inward, Amid daily duties Of assigning and grading, I knew something different Was slowly evolving, A family of sorts was being formed. Teaching and learning became Something shared, something not handed Just from teacher to student, But rather something together, We created each day With knowledge and eagerness, And, oh, so much laughter. What I hadn’t known last August, You helped me learn this year: Kinships, like families, Endure long after moments That appear to be endings. Though our kinship began On a hot day in August, And will end, as expected, On a hot day in June, I’ll remember this year, And I’ll know it was different. For true learning occurs When dialogue exists That reaches beyond

The old misperceptions About what teachers do And what students say. Real dialogue can be One of life’s great treasures. One day you may happen to ask Of yourself, “Was it different? Was eighth-grade English Any more or any less Than all of those other years Now blended together?” But it isn’t a question I’ll ask of myself. For this year, with the reading, The writing, the talking, The classroom laughter And the sorrows shared Will be for me a year like no other, Simply yet especially, The year like no other. It was, you see, and will remain for me The year that you were here. With every good wish,

Paul G. Lankford English 8 Teacher

It was my job to worry, to make sure That you got what you needed For life downstairs In Upper School next year. But while you were here, You left doors ajar That helped me to see The you that you are When teachers aren’t looking, And you left windows open That allowed me to hear What students say

When they aren’t giving teachers The standard student answers.

etting sail: new adventures “Global awareness programs like Cape Henry’s Nexus plant the seed for a peaceful future,” wrote Israeli Vice Prime Minister and Nobel laureate Shimon Peres in a letter of support for our international endeavors. Last November while in Israel developing a new Nexus economic program, Mr. Fluharty was fortunate enough to have dinner with Mr. Peres at U. S. Ambassador Richard Jones’ home. “He was curious and amazed at the magnitude and variety of global programs offered to our students. After our conversation, he agreed to write a letter in support of our new Nexus economic initiative with Israel.” This entrepreneurial program will team Cape Henry students with students from three Israeli high schools to create a business model based on an Israeli product to be marketed in America. It is an experiential, problem-solving, and partnering educational model rolled into one that is unique to the Nexus program. Each team will present their business plan via videoconferencing to a group of successful entrepreneurs who will offer their objective critique. Cape Henry student teams will have the exclusive opportunity to be mentored by both Old Dominion University and Hebrew University MBA students. Needless to say, this is an incredible opportunity that will increase their economic literacy. In its first four years, Nexus has received recognition, not only from Mr. Shimon Peres, but from a number of luminaries including Senator George Allen, Governor Tim Kaine, and His Honorable Minister of Home and Cultural Affairs of Bhutan, Lyonpo Jigme Thinley. These leaders acknowledged what we already knew, that Nexus offers Cape Henry students amazing opportunities to, as Senator Allen stated, “develop a deeper appreciation of other cultures and to expand your awareness of world affairs.” And to continue in what is developing into a world class international program, Nexus is offering the following 2008 opportunities: Classic Civilizations in Tunisia, French immersion in Martinique, Spanish language immersion in Spain, Science in the Galapagos, and once again, travel to Bhutan for the Senior Project 2008 (already sold out with a waiting list). We hope parents agree with the School’s esteemed supporters and will consider enrolling their child in one of these outstanding programs.

Brittany Agrillo was selected to the 2007 Virginia All-State Chorus and was one of four ladies selected to represent District II (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Eastern Shore) in the Soprano 1 section at the All-State Choral Event held in Christiansburg, Virginia in April. The concert featured the top scoring vocal music students from around the state. The National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held during the Upper School assembly on May 2. Congratulations to all newly selected NHS members.

On Monday, May 20, Bryce Northington, Carter Gibson, Guy Carmeli, and Stephen Parnigoni traveled to City Council’s Chambers to testify before the Wetlands Board. Their efforts were recognized in The Virginian-Pilot. Dr. Lewis received letters regarding their impressive work, and the Wetlands Board voted 4-3 against the proposal the students were opposing. In 2006, Dr. Lewis received an email from a physicist who was positing a few alternate theories in physics. The information was sent to Mr. Tom Rodgers, The Perry Chair for Science and Technology, and he received the data the physicist had used to create his theories. Mr. Rodgers and junior, Emily Burke, ran the experiments in AP Physics and Emily created her own data sets. They reviewed these theories to test their validity. Emily Burke and Barrett Jacobson will be taking an independent study class in the “project room” in which they will be studying the physics of and building an electric car. Two CHCS teams place in the top five in the state for the Stock Market Game. Out of 2,678 teams, Robert Morey, Jonathan Speight, David Peregoff, and Andrew Snyder were first in the state with a return of 80% in 10 weeks. Placing Fourth in the state were Ethan Kelley, Scott Saal, Ian Wittenberg, and Fitz Shipp with a return of 36.6%. Both teams were First and Second in Hampton Roads out of 157 teams and earned prizes from The Virginian-Pilot of $100 each for First Place and $75 each for Second Place. These students were honored at the Federal Reserve in Richmond at a banquet in their honor in May.

PRING ATHLETIC REPORT

28 Soundings •

JULY 2007

All of our Spring Team Sports finishing with a top ten ranking in the state, two TCIS Championships, two TCIS Players of the Year, an All-Time Leading Goal Scorer emerging, 37 All-TCIS selections, two State Semifinalists, a TCIS Coach of the Year, a State Player of the Year, a State Championship, multiple All-State recipients, an Honorable Mention All-American, an Academic All-American, and two All-Americans… IT HAS BEEN A GREAT SPRING! The Class of 2007 concluded their athletic careers with the same determination and character as they began as Middle School athletes. This class will be remembered as one of, if not the, most accomplished to ever receive diplomas from Cape Henry Collegiate School. The Varsity Boys Baseball Team had a history-making season, winning the first TCIS Championship in school history. Coach John Ingram enjoyed a season of polished veterans, with a senior class that will be hard to replace. After dropping the regular season match-up versus Greenbrier Christian Academy, Cape Henry, led by the pitching clinic of Robert Morey, defeated the Gators by a score of 6-3 in the TCIS final. The Dolphins finished the season with a record of 14-3, with strong contributions from the multi-talented Jonathan Whited, the athleticism of Pete Levitt, the baseball savvy of Parker Talbert, and the consistency of Coleman Newell. Underclassmen Nathaniel Kerbin, Tyler Faubert, and Blake Whited hope to carry on the baseball tradition of their incredible predecessors! Coach Jen Baker’s Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team completed the impeccable trifecta! Winning the regular season championship, the TCIS Tournament Championship, and the Division II State Championship is a feat that has never been accomplished by any team at Cape Henry Collegiate School. This team simply refused to lose, and that mentality carried them to a State Championship. Captains Emily Cole and Morgan Pearman guided this team to one of the best seasons ever. TCIS Player of the Year, State Player of the Year, and Honorable Mention All-American Mary Flowers seems to play in a league of her own on this pitch with All-State recipient Kelsey Scherrer quickly on her heels. Sarah Potter, Liz Napolitano, and Kaelyn Smith provided a strong defense that seems to frustrate most every opponent’s attack. This season will live on in history and placed Cape Henry on the map as THE Girls Lacrosse Team in Southeastern Virginia. The Varsity Boys Tennis Team, finished 2nd in the TCIS and 8th in the State with a very youthful roster. Seventh grader and 1st Seed, Tanner Baine, earned 1st Team All-TCIS Honors combined with the play of Eighth grader, Seth White, bring high hopes for the Varsity Boys Tennis Team under the helm of Coach Ray Dayton. Captains Niraj Patel and Kevin Hamele, in addition to the fine play of Eric Smith, Raj Dhillon, and Connor Hoerr helped Cape Henry to finish with an impressive overall record of 12-3. Coach Max Moore once again led the Varsity Girls Soccer Team to a TCIS runner-up finish and a ranking of 3rd in the State. Cape Henry’s all-time leading goal scorer, Genna Brand, finished the season as both a leader and one of the finest to every suit up for the Lady Dolphins. Her record of 140 goals may never be surpassed. This team avenged their loss to Walsingham by defeating the Trojans in tournament play, and their only other defeats were to the eventual State Champions. Seniors and Co-Captains Jackie Miller and Kelsey Pick provided this team with solid varsity play throughout the season. Up and comings, Kelsey Bergen, Isabel Shocket, Morgan Speight, Rachel Law, Maddie Houck, Addie Law, Kathryn Van Deveer, Kirby Talbert, and Katie Ellis behind the leadership of Emily Burke and Liza Goldman will without a doubt, carry on the Cape Henry Girls Soccer tradition for years to come! The Varsity Golf Team, under the direct of Coach Phil Stewart, had some key positions to fill after last season’s TCIS Championship, but, when your top player is Scott Saal, you really cannot call this a rebuilding year. Kent Ryu, Matt Cheniae, Max Wagner, and John MacConkey all stepped up to finish 4th in the TCIS Tournament. Scott Saal was the Tournament’s 2nd place finisher, with Matt Cheniae and Kent Ryu also finishing in the top ten spots for All-Conference recognition. The Golf Program will surely miss the masterful play of Scott Saal, not to mention his leadership and professional athletic demeanor. The Coed Track & Field Team was the only spring roster that had no seniors participating. This should speak well of their potential for coming years. Coach Sharif Rudolph was very pleased with the performances of Carina Tate, Larry McDaniel, Kelli Morrissey, Maddy Woodson, and Nia Brooks. Lauren Papineau and Michael Blanchard provided the leadership, and the youth of this roster will develop into a formidable conference opponent next spring.

Cape Henry’s Varsity Softball Program turned one of the most superb seasons of recent history by finishing 4th in the conference and 9th in the State. Senior pitcher Stephanie Grune maintained the power from the mound and from the batter’s box, while the finesse of Mary DiGeronimo settled things in center field. She was a key lead-off batter. Captains do not come any better than Shelby Evans and Casey Scherrer, so this team was in good hands from the start. Brianna Dyckman was a fine addition behind the plate to control the defense with seniors Katie Pawlowski and Lizzie Wagner providing the steady play and positive energy that made this team a success. Head Coach Cherlynn Fagerheim and Assistant Coach Joe DiGeronimo were more than pleased with the results of a great Cape Henry Girls Softball Season. The Varsity Coed Crew Team has one of the most diligent, hard-working programs on campus. Their representation in local regattas is something for us all to be very proud of. Captains Amber Templeton, Madison Marchbank, Jacob Green, and David Sarrett guided this team to three 1st place finished in the Independent Schools Regatta, not to mention a noteworthy 2nd place finish in the Mens Lightweight of the EVSRA Regional Competition. Coach Lynn McGeein has steered this program in the right direction and the sky is the limit with returning veterans: Clarke Templeton, Jake Jones, ZJ Fritz-Manolio, Kate Pleasants, Yasemin Johnson, Paige Wheeler, Kristin Capria, and Divya Suresh to name a few. And, finally, one of the best Boys Lacrosse Teams in the State and to ever grace Trinder Field battled the eventual state champion to a hard fought defeat in the state quarterfinal game. Captain Brandon Faubert, with the assist and auxiliary play of the skilled attack play from Carter Mavromatis, Cole Mason, and Brooks Bradley, racked up more scores than any other conference opponent. TJ Spera had a phenomenal season in goal with the help of his defensemen, Alex Elliot, Wes Forehand, and Andrew Snyder. The season ending injury of Dan Bain was a definite deterrent, but Dan maintained his Captain sideline front with leadership and dignity. A senior-laiden squad, the graduating seniors on this team will be sorely missed: Matt Gibb, Pat Green, and Kyle McIsaac. Thanks for carrying on our strong Cape Henry Lacrosse Tradition. As the school year comes to an end and we get ready to say goodbye to the Class of 2007, we have to commend this class on some remarkable athletic seasons. We now have five State Champion Teams, and members of this class earned four of them. The superstar play of Robert Morey, Brandon Faubert, Genna Brand, Scott Saal, Stephanie Grune, Shelby Evans, Niraj Patel, and Dan Bain, will always be remembered. But, the special ingredient that this class had was their commitment to play and to play as many sports as they could manage. We do not win State Championships and TCIS Crowns without the Jonathan Whiteds, Pete Levitts, TJ Maroons, Coleman Newells, Morgan Pearmans, or Emily Coles. This class is full of very accomplished athletes, who will continue their athletic endeavors at the collegiate, and quite possibly the professional level. We can all agree the Class of 2007 is full of high-achievers, but the special ingredient that this class possessed was their commitment to play and to play as many sports as they could manage. We do not win State Championships and TCIS Crowns without the team play and multi-sport commitment that this class founded. The incredible athletic investment from this class was the entire premise behind the three-sport Varsity Athlete Award. They truly made a difference both in our trophy cases and in our perception of the truly well-rounded student athlete. Congratulations to the Class of 2007, and thanks for the mark of commitment you left on Cape Henry Athletics!

lumni Reunion Weekend 2007

The inaugural Alumni Reunion Weekend 2007 was a resounding success! The weekend commenced with the inspiring play of the Boys Varsity Lacrosse game versus Norfolk Academy on Friday afternoon with a number of alumni on the sidelines cheering their old school! Friday night found alumni, faculty, and friends in attendance at a fabulous concert presented by the Cape Henry Collegiate School Jazz Band and the Senior Choral Ensemble. Several alumni were able to “sit-in” with the Jazz Band and everyone enjoyed the dessert and coffee bar that followed. Saturday’s festivities began with a beautiful day for the Second Annual Alumni Spring Thing Lacrosse Day. Lacrosse action and an alumni tailgate party at the field provided the perfect platform to watch as both the Boys and Girls Varsity teams summarily Alumni visited with former lacrosse coaches at the CHCS vs. NA varsity lacrosse game: Former dispatched their opponents. Mrs. Julie Scherrer, Mrs. Susan Pleasants, and Dr. Jack Lewis escorted alumni on guided tours of the physical plant, including the Science and Technology Center. For some of our alumni, life at Cape Henry Collegiate School was merely a gymnasium. We have come so far in a relatively short period of time. Most of the classes departed the reception to enjoy dinner together in Virginia Beach. Many friendships were rekindled and talk excitedly turned to the planning of the next reunion!

LUMNI FEATURE: JESSICA ZYGANCZYK '96

JULY 2007

Jessica Zaganczyk set sail for excellence when she embarked on an educational journey marked by accomplishment both in the classroom and on the tennis court. Jessica came to Cape Henry Collegiate School as a first grade student in 1985 and became a “Senior Survivor” in 1996. She excelled throughout her school years earning accolades and holding membership in numerous clubs and activities including the National Spanish Honor Society, the Spanish Club, and SCA serving as President of the later two during her senior year. On the courts, she reigned as a TCIS tennis champion in both the 9th and 10th grade. Jessica’s voyage took her to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she continued to excel academically and on the tennis court as a member of the Tar Heel’s highly competitive Division I tennis team. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in December 2000. Subsequent to graduation, Jessica moved to New York City where she landed a position with IMG, a sports and entertainment conglomerate, working in the Fashion Division for three years. She was the Special Projects Manager for both the New York and Los Angeles Fashion Week events. These are runway shows that happen twice each season where designers show their latest collections. She rubbed elbows with Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Nanette Lapore, and Michael Kors, among others. Jessica parlayed her experience at IMG into a position with Esquire Magazine working directly with the Vice President/Publisher as well as with the marketing department, focused primarily on fashion industry accounts. After two great years with Esquire, Jessica was recruited to Hermes of Paris in the position of Special Events Manager in August of 2005. She was promoted this past December to Director of Special Events with Hermes. In this capacity, she is responsible for overseeing and executing all special events within the United States. On average, Hermès produces over 65 events per year, which are divided among the 16 boutiques located across the country. The events range from intimate dinners and cocktail parties for a select number of VIP clients to elegant galas and charity events for over 500 people. In the last six months, she has traveled to Paris, and spent much of the winter splitting time between Palm Beach, Atlanta, and Charlotte. Most recently, she oversaw the opening of two new boutiques - Palm Beach, Florida in January and Charlotte, North Carolina in March. Both events hosted over 350 people at elegant cocktail receptions which included dancers flown in from Paris to perform. In June, Hermès will open a second New York flagship on Wall Street. The event will consist of a champagne toast at the new boutique followed by a celebration with over 800 people at the historic Cunard Building in the Financial District. Jessica oversees a staff including an Event Manager and Event Coordinator, and two assistants/interns at Hermes corporate offices located off Madison Avenue in New York’s Upper East Side. Jessica had this to say: “For the past six years, I have been living in New York City, and pursuing my dream of working in the fashion industry at a top design house. Now having reached a certain level at Hermès, I can say that it was well worth all the hard work and sacrifice. I can look at a movie like ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, and say with certainty that the world of fashion can sometimes be very much like the world that Anne Hathaway’s character experienced. But on the same hand, I can look at it and say it is a world that can also teach a person a great deal about themselves, their strength of character, their will to succeed, and how to stay true to what is really important. “Without a solid foundation, coming to a place like New York might have been a very different experience for me. Without knowing how to balance my time, multi-task, perform under pressure, and at the same time keep my wits about me, I might have been easily overwhelmed, frustrated, and discouraged. While I certainly experienced my share of uphill battles, it was the way in which I bounced back from those struggles and challenges, that helped me continue to grow and move forward in the world. I had to draw upon lessons I had learned as a child and a teenager, lessons and skills that had been taught to me day in and day out, and had become part of my psyche. I had four wonderful years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but it was the twelve years that I spent as a part of the Cape Henry family that helped mold me into the person I am today. “Whether it was the challenging curriculum, the realistic work load, the ever-broadening expectations, or the unique mix of the student body, Cape Henry was always pushing me to be better and achieve more, while at the same time, teaching me the skills and giving me the tools with which to do so. I had conversations with teachers as if they were friends, presented projects in front of rooms full of people as if they were my family, and learned from my mistakes when I would fail. “There isn’t a day that goes by in New York where I do not draw upon something that was taught to me at Cape Henry. I still keep a journal like the one I had to write for Mrs. Goulart’s English class in the Eighth Grade. I can still remember Spanish that I learned in Mrs. Glascock’s class when I walk into the deli in the morning for coffee. I still love American history more then anything, like I did when Mr. Cameron taught me my sophomore year. And I still struggle with math everyday, just like I did in Mr. and Mrs. Kerbin’s class during my final two years at CHCS. “It is an experience that I was blessed to have and an academic institution that I am proud to have been a part of during its more formative years. It has redefined what it means to be an educator, and I will always be thankful for my time spent there.” Cape Henry Collegiate School is so very proud of Jessica Zaganczyk for her many accomplishments and dedication to excellence. She is a shining example of our alumni setting sail on the voyage to excellence.

Stephen was very excited to tour the new Science and Technology Center and in concert with several Micron professionals, plans to develop a seminar to be delivered in the new building during the next academic year. (See Reunion Photos on Pages 32 and 33) Carly Cais '96 was selected as one of five finalists from around the country for her entry in the Bacardi Limon Express Your Style Design Competition. Carly now living in Honolulu with her husband, Kusuto, and their 20-month-old son, Keiden, submitted her design for “Lemon Jewels Dress.” The competition was created to support emerging designers and was judged by fashion magazine, The Daily. The five finalists were flown to New York where they competed head-tohead in a live “cut and sew.” Carly had to complete her dress in a mere seven hours. The judges critiqued sewing skills as well as design. While Carly has no formal fashion background, she has created her own clothes for most of her life. Ultimately, Carly did not win the contest, but she received widespread media coverage, was asked by MTV VJ Vanessa Minnillo to design a dress for her to wear to an upcoming event, and was contacted by a boutique in Hawaii that wants to carry her line. Thus a business was born and Carly’s website will soon be up at www.carlyjcais.com. Leon Koppens '96 and his wife, Larisa, attended the reunion for the combined Classes of 1996 and 1997. She recently joined a shamisen club. A shamisen is a traditional Japanese instrument, similar to a guitar or banjo. In addition to language classes, Nancy is taking music courses. Nancy returns to the States in August and writes of her experiences, “It’s only until you step outside of your own comfort zone and immerse yourself in a completely foreign environment that you begin to comprehend how much of your own world you take

for granted. While I am a functioning adult, I am a child in Japan in terms of language and culture, and so I make a lot of mistakes, but I am learning quickly and discovering a completely new way of viewing the world. I know that when I return I will question much more of my own customs and not take simple things for granted.” Nancy is pictured, middle, at a “Seijin Shiki”, a coming of age ceremony for Japanese youth upon turning twenty, the legal age of Japanese adulthood.
