From the Head of School DR. JOHN P. LEWIS

E x c e r p t s f r o m D r . L e w i s ' s G r a d u a t i o n Add r e s s “We have great hope for the young men and women you see before you. We have been inspired by our history to prepare these young people to be well-educated, thoughtful, responsible, compassionate leaders. Our students have been challenged to do more than average school work, and our teachers have strived to instill in our students the desire to be the best. These young people have matured to a level that reflects responsibility for their own growth. We know this because we see the results in their school work and their commitment to others. Over the years we saw growth in their written articles in the award-winning student newspaper, The Lighthouse, and in their musical and theatrical talent as they created the popular Cabaret, Jazz Jam, many theater events, plus an unforgettable Spring Concert. We also witnessed the results in their art and photography that graced our halls and walls, in their creative power point presentations, and in their film projects that have entertained us. Their senior speeches have been varied. They have informed, inspired, and motivated us, and in some instances, kept us honest by addressing issues we would rather not think about. We saw growth and maturity in their volunteerism. Their commitment was extraordinary and genuine. The students seated before you are always the first to lead – they actively supported important programs for autistic children; they raised thousands of dollars for Multiple Sclerosis; they taught in the Horizons Summer Program; they raised funds for the students of New Orleans; and they reached out to the global community through music in a fund raiser for a school in Bhutan. They have elevated the strength, depth, and meaning of the Senior Projects as they built boats, cars, and unusual bicycles. They brought home four TCIS championships, the most ever, and had two all-state musicians. As young adults, they have traveled the world in search of greater understanding. We all understand that when students leave us, their growth is not complete. We also know that over time, our instruction and our values will help them to grow more confident in themselves. Life will hold many challenges for our young Alums, and they will accept the consequences of their actions maturely because they have developed understandings which go well beyond academic requirements. These students value intellectual endeavors, and they have the ability to apply knowledge to new situations and adjust to a variety of new social networks. They can ethically and effectively use technology and science. They have developed critical thinking skills as well as precision in written, oral, and artistic expression, and they can present a convincing argument in any form. They are honest because they understand integrity, and they are open to other points of view. Class of 2008, you live in extraordinary times! You are fine young men and women who care about your families and friends, your classmates and teachers, your religion and your integrity. You must carry these commitments throughout your lives into your own 'Brave New World.' And now I have two rhetorical questions for you. First - What kind of a world will you face? Think about this. Cloning may become routine, microscopic sized robots will assist in ways we can’t imagine, alternatively-powered, go-slow cars could rule the roads, and the Internet may actually evolve into an instrument of peace as it promotes greater communication. The world will be much more connected during your lifetime; partnerships, relationships, and interrelationships will expand dramatically. Real solutions to problems will be global in scope, local in participation, and national in implementation. How you use this unlimited connectivity and how you maintain and develop new relationships will determine your success. Second - How prepared are you for your new world? As I see it - the world is waiting for you; you may question yourself and ask if you are ready for the challenges ahead. I can answer that question. You are ready! The evidence is clear. You are very well prepared, so, I encourage you to enjoy your summer and then - this fall - engage your Cape Henry education and use your college time wisely. From all of us, congratulations to the Class of 2008!”

The 2007-2008 CHCS Board of Trustees

Saying Farewell to Two Exceptional Trustees

At their last regularly scheduled Board meeting of the year, the 2007-2008 CHCS Board of Trustees bid a fond farewell to Mr. Greg Law and to Mrs. Leslie Quisenberry whose terms expired this June.

Mr. Greg Law

Mrs. Leslie Quisenberry

Mr. Greg Law’s clear thinking and balanced point-of-view as well as his tireless commitment at Board meetings provided wonderful years of leadership. He will be missed. We are all grateful to him and to his family for the many gifts they collectively bring to Cape Henry including the gift of time helping students, faculty, and coaches succeed.

Whether it has been at the Beach Party on the Lawn or the Annual Giving Phonathon in the fall, the Grand Auction in the winter, the Tennis Tournament in the spring, or numerous other school events throughout the year, Mrs. Leslie Quisenberry has been a constant presence for the past two years. As President of the Cape Henry Parents’ Association, Leslie’s leadership, dedication, diligence, talent, and generosity have been invaluable to all, and her example has been inspiring.

A CHPA Kind of Year Over the past two years, Cape Henry has seen the continuation and expansion of exemplary CHPA programs. In 2006-2007, CHPA instituted such community building activities as the Parents’ Survey, the Volunteer Information Fair, enlisted nationally known guest speakers for both our parents and our students, initiated the Dolphin Doubles Round-Robin Tennis Social, and the Family Movie Under the Stars. During the 2007-2008 academic year, CHPA spearheaded the efforts to bring Sports Madness to our community – an event sure to become part of this institution. They also continued in their spirit of generosity this year with a check for $15,000 for the Lower School Playground and $3,000 for the Nexus Program. Our CHPA leaders have literally touched every aspect of our school community. From their involvement with programs for our parents and students to their representation on the Board of Trustees, they have served well. Congratulations for a tremendously successful year!

Teeing Up for a Good Cause Even the rainy weather could not dampen the spirits of the 120 golfers and over 50 volunteers who came out to support Cape Henry’s Golf Tournament held on April 21 at the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club. After surviving four soggy holes of play, everyone enjoyed a dinner buffet, catching up with old friends, great prizes, and a few hands of cards! Thank you to everyone who assisted in making this year’s CHCS Golf Tournament a tremendous success. Due to the generosity of our underwriters, hole sponsors, and donors, we exceeded our goal! Not bad for a rainy day. The funds raised will benefit all of our students.

After five years as the Dean of Academic Affairs and Head of the Upper School, Mr. Doug Wine will be moving to Sandia Park, New Mexico to serve as the Head of the areas’ Charter School. During Mr. Wine’s five years at CHCS, he has done much to enhance the School’s academic offerings and has facilitated smoother academic transitions between the three school divisions. Doug has also greatly affected the bond and close community between the faculty and students. CHCS wishes Mr. Wine and his family great success and happiness in their new home.

Eighth Grader June Kramer was able to arrange an assembly for two of the "Lost Boys of Sudan" to tell their harrowing, but ultimately inspiring, story to the Middle School and Upper School students. The speakers were also able to help the students gain a broader perspective on the Civil War in the Sudan and the horrors of the genocide in Darfur. The Cape Henry Collegiate students were intrigued and stunned to learn that Bul Dut and William Mayom had been forced from their home as boys under the age of ten by roving militia bands and escaped with their lives only after braving both the Southern Sahara Desert and adjoining Savanna Lands full of wild game. The men recounted the difficulties they faced, not only escaping all of these threats, but also in trying to keep the remains of their families together. Our students were also inspired to hear how Bul and William have forged a life for themselves in the United States as students at Old Dominion University, and how they also work actively to aid those less fortunate who must still live in conditions of poverty, deprivation, and constant threat of violence from the on-going war in Sudan and genocide in Darfur. After Bul and William presented their stories, the students then were treated to an inspirational talk from June Kramer about the needs of those remaining in the African conflict and how our students could make a difference through a few simple actions. Bravo, June, for your passion for this critical issue and your willingness to share it with us.

SCHOOL NEWS

Spring Athletic Report The 2008 Spring Athletic Season brought the triumphs of the Class of 2008 to a pinnacle. Two more additional TCIS Championship banners will hang from the rafters to bring the total to four after a remarkable athletic year. Both seasoned veteran coaches and new leadership joined the Dolphin ranks to make this Spring a success and mark this year as the year of the banner! TCIS Coach of the Year, Ray Dayton, guided his tennis team to an undefeated conference record and a TCIS Tournament Championship. Captains Raj Dhillon and Kevin Hamele were able to lead their team to the School’s first TCIS Championship. The #1 versus #2 challenge play of Tanner Baine and Eric Smith dueled throughout the season for the top seed. These matches were flavored with brilliant tennis play that will keep this tennis team as an area favorite for many years to come. This team finished the season with an impressive record of 12-2 and a trip to the Division I State Quarterfinals. What an historical season for the Varsity Boys Tennis Program! Rookie Coach, David Smith, stepped into the Varsity Track & Field position with an eagerness to train his distance runners, and welcomed the assistance of Jaton Hines for sprint work and field specialty disciplines. Seniors Carina Tate and Michael Blanchard captained this team with a new flair of dynamic conditioning and core training. Endurance elitist, Kelli Morrissey, once again stood out in both the 800M and Mile events, finishing 2nd in the Mile and 3rd in the 800M in the TCIS. Sophomore, David Blanchard, also finished 3rd in the TCIS 800M. Coach Smith looks to bring more expertise to this program and is seeking additional Cape Henry athletes to join the team, both as Track & Field Athletes, and as an off-season conditioning program for their respective sports. The Varsity Baseball Team started their season with many positions to fill, and fill them, they did! Once again, Coach John Ingram worked his magic to transform a youthful group of baseball players into a polished baseball team. Coach Ingram has the uncanny ability to create a baseball program that is accountable and professional. Upsetting Greenbrier Christian a little more than halfway through the season was definitely a highlight. But, the success of this team on the heels of last year’s TCIS Championship was more evidence that Cape Henry Collegiate School has arrived. Senior Nathaniel Kerbin and junior standout Tyler Faubert directed this baseball program throughout the season. The future is very promising with a group of young athletes whose first love seems to be baseball! First-year coach, Charlie Lonergan, assisted by Shep Jordan, Colin Kelly, and Nathaniel Pierce, was also on the rebuilding end of things as March approached. Finishing with a season record of 13-5 is truly a success that absolutely no one would have predicted. Captains TJ Spera (1st Team All-State Recipient) and Alex Elliott brought their areas of defensive expertise, in addition to the offensive threats of Carter Mavromatis and Josh Cromwell. The season may not have concluded as the Seniors would have liked, but their contributions to the Varsity Boys Lacrosse Program will never be denied. The youth and determination of the underclassmen will earnestly step in to carry on the Cape Henry Lacrosse tradition.

Varsity Crew Coach Lynn McGeein welcomed faculty member and former Coach Rebecca Nelson to help keep the Dolphin Crew Team both technically skilled and physically fit. This Team continues to get stronger as their pre-season winter workouts are surely paying off. Top finishes in the Independent School Championship Regatta: 1st place from our Womens Doubles Team of Divya Suresh and Aubrey Northam; 1st place from our Mens Doubles Team of Jake Jones and Jacob Green; and, a 2nd place finish from the Mens Doubles Team of Clarke Templeton and Andrew Smith. The Novice Team of Hannah Martin, Amanda White, Kalan Brehm, Casey Dyckman, and Andrew Smith also finished 1st in the EVSRA Regionals. It is quite evident that all of the pre-season workouts are paying off!

27 www.capehenryCOLLEGIATE.org

The word tradition brings many things to mind. One of which, is the winning tradition that has been established with the Varisty Girls Lacrosse Program. Coach Jen Baker traveled from Nevada to steer this team to yet another TCIS Regular Season and Tournament Championship. Her personal sacrifice cannot be overlooked, and her Team did not disappoint. Cape Henry’s all-time leading scorer, Senior captain Mary Flowers and senior captain Liz Napolitano were determined to hang another banner on the wall. Yes, Mary has changed the face of Girls Lacrosse at Cape Henry Collegiate, and no one will dispute that she is one of the finest athletes to ever graduate from our school… male or female. But, her supporting cast of Kaelyn Smith, Ally Brooks, Brittany Bertolino, Kelsey Scherrer, and Georgia Putney made this group of athletes a TEAM! Unmistakably, one of the BEST! They finished their season with a record of 13-3 advancing to the Division II State Championship game, and advancing the game of lacrosse in all of Hampton Roads! As the season concluded, Mary Flowers was named 1st Team AllAmerican and Kelsey Scherrer was named honorable mention.

Another program, the Varsity Girls Soccer Team, started their season with a bit of a hiccup… a change in coaching during the first two weeks of the season. Coach David Brun was more than excited to lead this team with the help of seniors Liza Goldman (2nd Team All-State Recipient) and Emily Burke. Leadership just doesn’t get much better than those two! It seemed whatever fate threw this team in terms of injury or coaching changes, they handled with class and dignity. A well played game versus Norfolk Academy and Bishop Sullivan late in the season were highlights and proof that this team was indeed, talented. Isabel Shocket, Katie Ellis, Kelsey Bergen, Morgan Speight, and Rachel Law look to hold up the Goldman/Burke legacy and take this team to a different level in the future. Coach Frank Sink was new to Cape Henry, but quickly stepped into the Varsity Golf Coaching position and brought a great deal of professional technical instruction to the Dolphin Golf Team. Six-time season medalist, Matt Cheniae, and All-TCIS Recipient, Kent Ryu took the leadership reigns for this team that finished a respectable 7-4. Max Wagner, Matt Gilbert, Kayleigh Reed, and Cecil Ward will look to capture a TCIS title next season as there were no graduating seniors on this squad. Congratulations to our JV Golf Team and Coach Alice Meredith on winning the TCIS Regular Season JV Golf Title! And, kudos to all of our JV and Middle School Athletic Programs this Spring. The Spring Season brings more teams and competitions than any other season. We are fortunate to have the level of coaching and commitment at this level from an amazing group of coaches: Kevin DeJesus, Scott Gray, Hilary Lutz, Paige Duffy, Richard Plank, Nathaniel Pierce, Stephen Addair, Dany McVey, Wes Neubeck, Joe Harvich, Bob Sully, and Brian Facemire, not to mention varsity coaches that volunteer to assist our programs, Jim McKinney and Amy Purcell. Our student athletes are not only given exceptional instruction, they are also exposed to incredible role models and mentors. A special thank-you to Charlie Lonergan who took over the position of Sports Information Director this year and has a special way of making us feel like we were always on the sidelines. As the school year comes to a close, and the reflections are vivid and ever present in our minds, we sometimes wonder if our seniors are stopping to appreciate and “smell the roses,” if you will. We wonder if they truly understand how special these days and memories are. It was more than apparent as I witnessed Nathaniel and Jimmy round the bases one last time, or heard the story of Liza’s last exit off of the soccer field, or looked into the eyes of Ally or Liz after the State Title game, or Mary’s last bus trip home from Richmond, or watched Carter, Cole, Alex, Josh, and TJ walk off of the lacrosse field into the locker room that last time… it came to me. “They get it!” Thank you, Class of 2008, for the four TCIS banners that will hang in the gym, but most of all, thanks for “getting it!"

Notes from the Alumni Director When I think back on the year, I can’t help but say, “Wow!” It has truly been an amazing year. We celebrated near the White House at the inaugural event for the D.C. Chapter of alumni, shared a beautiful fall day with alumni family and friends at the Fall Festival, inducted three new members to our Athletic Hall of Fame, reunited with our Class of 2007 at our annual Senior Breakfast. We also celebrated the life of a loved alumnus during the newly named Pete McMahan Alumni Basketball Game, cheered the holidays at our Holiday Open House, visited hundreds of alumni as we took to the road, had a ball at the Grand Auction and Golf Tournament, soaked up the sunshine at the Spring Thing/Reunion Weekend, and notched record highs in participation for Alumni Annual Giving! Wow, indeed! As summer approaches, it is actually not time to unwind; it is time to gear up. Plans are already in the making for additional events, programs, and initiatives. An Alumni Board is forming and the energy is contagious. We are developing a Tidewater Chapter of Alumni, organizing an Alumni Volunteer Day, working on an Alumni Career Day for our Upper School, a pen-pal program for the Lower School, discussing plans for Homecoming, starting an Alumni Admissions Coffee, and we are even advertising the first alumni Nexus trip! There is so much to do and so many ways to become involved. As you look through the alumni section of Soundings and learn about all of the amazing things our alumni are involved with, the word “wow” will probably cross your mind, as well. I hope you have a fantastic summer, and please drop by for a visit, call, or email anytime!

Shower Shoes and Good Advice During our annual Senior Breakfast, an informative discussion regarding the “cleanliness” of college dormitory bathrooms had our graduating Class of 2008 a little uneasy. In a follow-up discussion during a senior luncheon (a new initiative this year), the importance of shower shoes came up once again. It was then that the light bulb turned on! Cape Henry Collegiate School Alumni Shower Shoes would make a perfect graduation gift! As the end of the school year approached, and 78 (size appropriate) shoes had to be wrapped, the challenge of coming up with a clever name tag loomed. Then another light bulb turned on! What better way to leave the halls of CHCS, than to go back at where it all began, the Lower School. Several classes of 1st Grade and Kindergarten students offered advice to our graduating class. Here is a small sampling of what some of our Lower School students had to say. Enjoy! Dear Liz Napolitano ’08, You will miss playing on the playground. - Jacob Williams '19 Dear Glenn Sullivan ’08, Don’t forget any medicine in case you get sick. Don’t forget to pack a pair of shoes. Transitions

As our community continues to grow and expand, it can be difficult to keep up with important transitions in the lives of those around us. It often feels as if there is too much information to stay current. For that reason, we begin a regular feature which highlights the births, marriages, and losses in our Cape Henry family. By being aware of these sometimes joyous and sometimes sad transitions, we will be better prepared to empathize with our students and our community as a whole.

Scott is a Physician Assistant in thoracic surgery and oncology at Duke. He is also a faculty member for the PA program teaching the PA students that are in their surgical residency. The couple has two children; their son, Carter, is 9 and daughter, Isabel, is 7. Both children are very active in sports and Carter’s baseball coach just happens to be Eric Montross, NBA player and former standout for the UNC Tarheels! Brad Sykes '93 Even though Brad is 3,000 miles away, he still keeps his connection with Cape Henry Collegiate School going strong! He is living in Los Angeles, California with his wife, Josephina. The duo works together running their indie production company, Nightfall Pictures. Brad writes and directs while Josephina produces. As a director, Brad has nineteen features under his belt, most of them in the horror/thriller genre, all of which have been released around the world. His latest project is a science fiction / horror hybrid

Brent Matson '95 Proving that it is indeed a small world, Brent randomly ran into Chris Coppola '95 at a taco stand in Austin a few weeks ago. Brent graduated from Wake Forest in 1999 and received his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004. He works for the Lower Colorado River Authority in Austin. The company supplies power to about 1 million people across Central Texas via a portfolio of generation resources which includes hydroelectric and wind power. Brent wants to know if there are other alumni living in or around the Austin area; he is interested in starting a Cape Henry Collegiate School Austin-San Antonio Chapter of Alumni! If you are interested, please contact Brent at jbrentmatson@gmail.com. Vishal Amin '98 Between his work in the real estate development industry, specifically the hotel industry, and planning his wedding with his fiancé Aimee, Vishal stays very, very busy! Vishal admits that he keeps his eye on CNBC at all times to analyze the stock market—part business, part hobby. In his “down” time he enjoys hanging out with his friends, watching football and basketball, and enjoying restaurants and clubs in downtown Norfolk as well as Virginia Beach.

Todd Feldman '98 Todd works with Cohen Homes, a residential construction company that owns land in select neighborhoods throughout Hampton Roads and works with clients to custom design/build their homes. Todd specializes in cost control budgeting, estimating, purchasing, and client satisfaction. High-end purchasing is part of the daily grind; a $20,000 front door is not uncommon!

Katie admits that she has always loved clothes, and as she grows older, she is becoming more obsessed with being fashionable and trendy. She has also realized the strategic role that clothes play in our lives. Her husband, David, a 1996 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, owns two businesses as well. One is a bowling center in Farmville and the other is a gym in Richmond. Katie and David are a perfect fit for each other in that they both understand the fact that they are not only married to each other, but to their businesses as well!

Chandler Fulton '01 Are you a fan of the ABC hit reality show, The Bachelorette? If so, then you probably noticed that one of the available suitors was CHCS alumnus, Chandler Fulton ’01! Unbeknownst to Chandler, his twin sisters nominated him last spring. The next thing Chandler knew, he was flying back and forth to Los Angeles, California, signing legal paperwork, and taping episodes! Unfortunately, Chandler did not receive a coveted rose in the first round, but just being selected was quite the accomplishment; more than 18,000 available bachelors were nominated! Colin Kelly '01 Colin is working to expand his fast casual food concept, Q’doba Mexican Grill. He has two locations open right now, one at Hilltop and one on Military Highway, located in Janaf shopping center. Seven more store openings are expected soon! Colin says it has been a fun process and it keeps him busy seven days a week. His time off is spent with the boy's varsity lacrosse team at Cape Henry Collegiate School! He says he had a great time working with new head coach, Charlie Lonergan, who Colin feels is a perfect fit for the program. Colin plans on being a part of the staff again in 2009. Nancy Marsden '03 This past April, Nancy performed a senior recital at the College of William and Mary. The performance included songs and arias in English, Italian, German, Japanese, and French as well as songs that were performed on the samisen, a traditional Japanese instrument. Joseph Riddle '03 Joe recently spent some time at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is now at Old Dominion University, finishing his degree in International Studies. Joe also serves as a Youth Pastor at Wave Church, where he subsequently earned his "Bible College" degree at Wave’s Leadership Bible College.

Michael Lehtonen '04 Michael graduated on May 18, 2008 from Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida with a major in Environmental Studies and Minors in Visual Arts and Classical Humanities.

Lindsay Breitenberg '04 Good news! Lindsay has been accepted into the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme, commonly known as JET! Lindsay graduated from James Madison University the first weekend in May and is set to head to Japan on August 2. The interview process was quite demanding; in addition to the extensive written application, Lindsay had to travel to the Japanese Embassy in Washington, DC. Apparently 10,000 people apply to the JET program each year and only 2,000 are chosen. Lindsay is extremely excited about this opportunity and so is Cape Henry! We plan to learn more about Japan through Lindsay with a Lower School pen-pal project! On a completely different “note,” Lindsay and her JMU female a cappella ensemble Note-oriety, delighted Upper School, Middle School, and even some Lower School students with a brilliant concert held in the Dreyfus Family Auditorium. The Madison Project, the all male a cappella ensemble also joined in on the fun! Both groups were absolutely fantastic!

Greg Dragas '00 Have you heard about the HBO series John Adams? It was quite the rage and one of our very own, Gregory Dragas '00, participated in filming three scenes! Two scenes involved Greg as a poor colonist in Philadelphia, complete with scraggly wig and blacked out teeth. In the third scene, Greg portrayed a soldier in Alexander Hamilton's militia.

Perhaps the highlight of the filming was meeting Academy Award Nominees, Paul Giamatti during one of the shoots. Greg enjoyed the experience and said it was fun returning to acting for a few days, in between his Master’s studies.

Lindsey Frantz '04 Lindsey graduated from the College of William and Mary this spring and is relocating to Jacksonville, Florida. Why Jacksonville? Because she was recently selected to be a member of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars dance team! She auditioned, along with 200 other dancers during spring break. After making it through the preliminaries and semifinals, she then had to endure a week of interviews and classes along with a final solo audition. Nine rookies were selected to the squad and four veterans were cut. Lindsey said it was a strenuous, but very exciting process! In addition to her dancing duties, Lindsey just landed her “dream job,” a marketing position with the PGA tour, headquartered in Ponte Vedra, Florida! Lisa Bateman '05 Lisa is working on her honors thesis in psychology at the College of William and Mary, where she is pursuing a double major in psychology and sociology. This year she was elected president of the student-run dance company on campus. In the dance world, Lisa has become well known as a teacher, choreographer, and performer. Nik Melvin '05 Nik can add Co-Ivy League Champions to his already impressive athletic resume as Brown’s Men’s Lacrosse team won a piece of the title this past spring. Off the field, Nik is majoring in English with a focus in nonfiction writing. This summer he is serving an internship with Goldman Sachs in New York, in which he is hoping to land a fulltime job in the future. If a full-time spot does not work out, then law school is on the horizon!

Alex Rawls '05 Alex just finished his third year at the University of Virginia. He is working toward his BA in Computer Science and is also a Platoon Commander in the ROTC. This past semester, Alex commanded two squads of midshipmen, took a full course load (current GPA is a 3.9), and completed his

“Operation Order” which is an exercise in leadership through the ROTC. His task was to run a charity golf tournament which benefited Virginia Neuro Care, an organization that helps returning soldiers suffering from traumatic brain injuries. Being that the ROTC had never sponsored a golf tournament, Alex had to create everything from “scratch.” As is usual with Alex’s endeavors, the tournament was a success, raising over $1,800. As if his plate was not full enough, Alex found time to create a computer training sonar program in which ROTC officers can create war game scenarios that allow students to act as officers and fine tune their decision-making during intense pressurefilled situations. Alex’s “down time” this summer will involve spending five weeks on a fast attack submarine. He will leave from New London, Connecticut on June 23, but he has no idea where he will be going!

Devin Nash '06, Lauren Turner '06, and Emily Cole '07 Former lady laxers Devin Nash, Lauren Turner, and Emily Cole returned to campus several times this spring to cheer on the girls varsity lacrosse team as they pursued their goal of back-to-back state championship titles. Devin, who has played club lacrosse for the University of Georgia for the past two years, is transferring to Virginia Tech this fall. Lauren, who just finished her sophomore year at James Madison University plans to work at Virginia Beach General this summer as part of the Nurse Care Partner program; a nurses-aid program that Lauren had to test into. Emily finished her freshman year at the College of Charleston and loved every minute of it! Emily played club field hockey this past fall and her summer involves some traveling with her sister, Callie '04, as well as a trip to New Orleans with some college friends. Emily Cole ’07

Alec Crowell '06 Alec is very busy double-majoring in astrophysics and biology at Williams College, along with a concentration in Middle Eastern International Studies. This year he is the Fleet Captain of the sailing team. His weekends are devoted to skiing, tutoring in astrophysics, and volunteering as an EMT. Last semester, he was especially excited about the chance to take the course Path Physiology of Diseases of the Heart and Blood Vessels with a visiting professor from Stanford Medical School who is well known for having performed the first coronary angioplasty procedure in the country. Blake Burlage '06 Blake is making the most of her summer by gaining valuable internship experience in her chosen field, dentistry. If you are a patient at Oceanfront Dentistry, then you might see Blake working as a dental assistant. She absolutely loves it! The rising Virginia Tech junior says the internship is a great deal of time and work, but she loves the people she works with, is thankful for the opportunity, and says the atmosphere is wonderful!

fellow alumnus, Wes Forehand '07, love the atmosphere of being a Gamecock, and they are already gearing up for football season this fall! Robert Morey '07 According to Eric Kolenich, Cavalier Daily Senior Writer, “Most freshman pitchers don't reach the low 90s on their fastballs. Most pitchers are not integral parts of their bullpen on day one. Most pitchers aren't Robert Morey.” Needless to say, Robert continues to make an impact for The University of Virginia, serving the role as the set up man in the Cavalier’s bullpen. He recently picked up his second win of the season when he pitched a scoreless 11th inning against VMI. Virginia matched up against Miami in the ACC Finals and will face UCLA in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Brad Neubeck '07 Brad stopped in to visit during his spring break from Randolph Macon College. As is common for Cape Henry alumni, Brad is very involved at RMC. Not only did he serve as his Pledge Class President for the KA fraternity, he also participated in volleyball, dodgeball, softball, and racquetball intramurals as he seeks his degree in Business Economics.

Alex Spruiell '07 Alex says his freshman year at Duke flew by! Tenting during the basketball season was most likely the highlight of his college experience; that and enjoying his first Duke/Carolina game from the second row, with only 50 feet separating him from both Peyton and Eli Manning. Alex wasted no time getting involved at Duke. He assisted in starting a Duke and UNC chapter of Manna International, a national organization that deals mostly with poverty in Latin America, and, consequently, was elected the Public Relations Coordinator for the chapter. Alex took a spring break trip to Ecuador to visit Manna International’s site, and he was able to teach several classes on hygiene to the children they mentored. Alex is also a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, next year he will serve as a first year advisory counselor for incoming freshman, he is a DJ for the university's station, WXDU,

and he is declaring Biological Anthropology and Anatomy as his major. This summer, he will be living in Atlanta, Georgia working as a teacher in a program called Breakthrough Collaborative. Connie and Jack Harris '03

Last December, Jack Harris '03 was in an automobile accident that left him fighting for his life. As word of the terrible accident spread, the Cape Henry Collegiate School community pulled together to provide support for the Harris family. Miraculously, Jack not only survived the ordeal, but is now doing quite well. Jack has undergone multiple surgeries, but his attitude is remarkably positive. His mother, Connie, says the phrase, “Thank you,” seems too small to say to the Cape Henry community when the family was so overwhelmed with the outpouring of support they received. Recently, not only was Jack seen laughing as he strolled down hallways at Cape Henry during a visit, but he was even spotted with clubs in hand at the CHCS golf tournament! Miracles do happen, and for that, we are all very thankful.

Cape Henry Collegiate School is proud to have these 25 children of CHCS graduates attending their parents' alma mater.
