If you watch the news and read the newspapers, you may sometimes feel as if the entire world is corrupt. But even as tales of shady business deals, scandals, and terrorism tend to dominate the headlines, there are still many people, including our teachers, who make a positive difference everyday. Dr. John P. Lewis with his wife, Cathy.
Our faculty have worked hard to help equip our students with the tools needed to make that difference. At Cape Henry, it is our goal to not only ensure their future academic and financial success, but to help them become the type of leaders who are guided by a meaningful set of values.
At Cape Henry, we believe that leadership is not only defined by college choices or future job titles. Instead, we believe that identity must be characterized by how we live life and by the examples we set. Cape Henry leaders possess the ability to change hearts and build community while displaying virtues of courage and empathy. We try to develop leaders who will make a difference in the world. That is why students travel globally, compete honestly in sports, take classes in history, math, and ethics, and learn in a community influenced by meaningful values. They know the importance of possessing integrity and compassion. In the future, their Cape Henry experiences will help them further calibrate their moral compass, which will guide them in the decisions they make. Cape Henry graduates have the foundation to do great things, and they possess the moral direction that is required to succeed with confidence.
Congratulations to the Class of 2006!
The Senior Survivors of the Class of 2006.

Board of Trustees
At their last regularly scheduled Board meeting of the year, the CHCS Board of Trustees said a fond farewell to seven Trustees whose terms expired this June. It is gratifying to realize that all seven of these Trustees also entrusted Cape Henry with the education of their children.
Dr. Lance B. Davlin Despite an active medical practice, Dr. Davlin never hesitated to become involved with the School. He, along with his wife, Joanne, worked in tandem, not only for record setting Annual Giving gifts, but also for the enhancement of policies and educational experiences for our students.
Mr. Fred J. Napolitano, II Fred provided wonderful years of leadership especially in the areas of education and policy development. As Chair of the Education Committee during the important accreditation process, he demonstrated true leadership, and his open-mindedness allowed the School to examine policies and to strengthen Cape Henry in many ways.
Mr. Paul O. Hirschbiel, Jr. Paul helped bring about Board maturity as he exhibited experienced governance in leading the Board. He led the Board through important policy development, while setting the standards for development. He also established the Board mentoring and orientation programs to help Board members connect with the history of the School, all while working closely with the Board leadership.
Mr. Mark A. Kelly
Mark provided leadership at a time of change. He demonstrated uncanny skills to deal with complex issues. As Board Chair, he had the ability to maintain a wonderful sense of humor and support for the students, faculty, staff, and Board members. To our benefit, he was there as the School continued to reach forward from a school that was much smaller to one of the largest independent schools in Virginia.

Mrs. Wendy J. Sims Inevitably, because of her tireless support, Wendy will never leave the halls of Cape Henry. We consider her the “Auction Alumni President.” Her smiling face excites the Lower School assemblies as she dresses in her colorful costumes and visits the students as the Birthday Fairy each month. We are all truly grateful for her unwavering support of and enthusiasm for our students, and her generosity has been a true example for all.
Mr. Jeff M. Tourault Jeff we praise for his unwavering support, especially as the Campus Master Plan was developed over the years. Jeff skillfully guided many design and construction projects and was always willing to be there for the faculty and students when difficult construction challenges faced us. He is thanked for his financial and in-kind support as he always provided construction supplies and tools without ever asking for recognition or help from the School. The most recent design and construction project led by Jeff was the new girls’ dugout on the softball field.
Mrs. Kim R. Wheeler Kim has led the Parents’ Association to new heights by beginning new and exciting events such as the Back-to-School Beach Party, the Academic Nights, the Parents’ Art Show, and a New Family Focus committee. Her fresh ideas increased the number of volunteers dramatically. Her strong leadership style of “leading by example” has greatly benefited our school and students as was demonstrated by her presentation of a check for $25,000 from the Parents’ Association for the Science and Technology Building.
Former Trustees’ Reception On April 11, in The Perry Library, Dr. John P. Lewis, Head of School, and Mr. James H. Sparks, Chair of the Board of Trustees, held the third annual reception honoring the Founders and Former Trustees of Cape Henry Collegiate School. The reception was designed to give the Founders and Former Trustees a firsthand glimpse of the many great things that are taking place on Cape Henry’s campus today. It was wonderful to hear so many heart-warming stories from the guests about their involvement with the School through the years.

The luncheon was attended by several CHCS administrators, faculty members, and Upper School Peer Leaders since two Cape Henry Collegiate School parents and leaders were honorees. Mrs. Susan Hirschbiel and The Honorable Jody Wagner were two of this year’s recipients.
The Honorable Jody Wagner, former Chair of the CHCS Board of Trustees.
Founder and Former Headmistress of the School Visits It was an honor to have Founder and Former Headmistress, Mrs. Anne D. Waldrop (Dickie Jordan Waldrop), and her husband, Mr. Louis S. hutan: Land of the Thunder
Dragon
Letters of support for our mission from Governor Kaine and Senator Allen wished us well as we embarked to the small Buddhist Kingdom as one of the first American high schools to visit. People had asked me why I wanted to go to Bhutan. I wanted to respond with Mallory’s infamous quote, “Because it’s there.” But in fact, the answer was more like, “Because nobody else goes there.” Bhutan opened its doors to tourism in 1974 and last year allowed an estimated 10,000 tourists into Druk Yul, or the Land of the Thunder Dragon. In a world of iPods, computers and cable television, I wanted to move our students so far out of their comfort zone, that their whole perception of the world would be altered. I think Bhutan’s magic did just that. The allure of this Himalayan “Shangri-La” covered politics, culture and religion. Politically, our program was highlighted by a 90 minute discussion at the capital on the concept of Gross National Happiness with His Excellency Lyonpo Jigme Thinley, Minister for Home & Cultural Affairs and former Prime Minister. We followed that with a discussion of the constitution with His Excellency Lyonpo Sonam Tobgay, Chief Justice of the Bhutan Supreme Court and primary architect of the newly drafted, first constitution. A tour of the Supreme Court with two justices, a dinner with the Director of Education and Director of Management topped an extremely rare opportunity for our students to have access to the highest political officers. But one cannot discuss politics in Bhutan without mentioning religion. The two are not separate, but are equal, and integrated throughout their society. Bhutan is a land of myths and legends where Buddhist mantras chanted by red robed monks rise above the thick green forests. Tantric Buddhism is so ingrained in the culture that it permeates every aspect of existence from King Wangchuck’s consultation with an astrologer before a military contest to the poorest farmer toiling behind two prayer beaded oxen in a rice paddy. Orchards of white Buddhist prayer flags dot the mountain sides with cool winds carrying prayers for the dead to the heavens. Prayer wheels of many sizes inundate each community sending prayers of compassion skyward to help rid the world of hatred and anger. In some cases, large prayer wheels are powered by glacier fed streams, so they can spin eternally helping ease the sins of the world. Bhutan is a land of spirits and demons who are often kept at bay by the powers of Buddhist mantras and rituals passed down by the likes of Drukpa Kinley, or the Devine Madman of the Flaming Thunderbolt. People still adorn their homes with Flaming Thunderbolts to ward off evil spirits. It is a land where the legendary Buddhist lama Guru Rimpoche flew on the back of a tiger to the cliffs over Paro to establish the holy Tashkang, or Tigers Nest monastery in the 8th Century. Color is everywhere; from the red rhododendrons covering the 12,000-foot foothills of the snow-capped Himalayas to intricately painted murals in temples. By the end of the trip, our students felt comfortable meditating on the floor of a temple or spinning a prayer wheel. Culturally, Bhutan is a land that is blissfully stuck in time. It remains in many places the same as it was 1,000 years ago providing our students with a glimpse into the past. Buckwheat flour is still milled the ancient way, between stones spun by stream power. It is a place where twelfth century castles called Dzongs are still used as government offices. People still wear the traditional, colorful ghos and keras. Thirty five percent do not have electricity, forty percent are illiterate, and ninety percent are subsistence farmers. But despite their apparent deprivation, we were welcomed into homes, monasteries and nunneries with kind, content smiles. During our eleven day visit, we saw at most, a dozen westerners, sparing Bhutan of much outside influence and leaving a refreshingly untouched nation. It is as if the 25,000-foot peaks that surround this country have protected it from all that ails the planet. The beauty of the people, the culture, and the land remains intact and intoxicating. Prior to the trip, our students pondered whether the concept of Gross National Happiness was propaganda. After the trip, none doubted that happiness should be the most important goal for a society, and it has nothing to do with materialistic accumulation; a simple concept that hopefully has inextricably altered their perception of the world. As student Danny Lampton stated towards the end of the trip, “This trip has changed my life.” That makes two of us.

Farewell to Janet and George Holden
19 Soundings • SUMMER 2006
Upon the completion of their 2005-2006 school year, Janet and George Holden returned to their home in New Hampshire to take care of family obligations. They will be missed. It is important to recognize both Janet and George for their contributions to our school community. Janet has taught for twelve years in the Lower School. She has elevated the science program for young children to nationally recognized heights. Her vision to institute her own Lower School science curriculum has been both challenging and fun for the students. Janet has been the inspiration that has made Cape Henry a perennial regional winner of Toshiba ExploraVision awards, and she has made science a signature program for our school. We appreciate and cherish her effort and enthusiasm to create a program our students can learn from for years to come. George has taken the lead in many of our school’s technological advances. The addition of laptops for teachers, instruction in PC based machines, a new phone system, a more interactive web page, and the addition of iPod technology have been only a small portion of his many positive initiatives at Cape Henry. We appreciate Janet and George’s commitment to our school, and we honor and support their need to be with family. Our hope is that they will return to Virginia Beach and rejoin us at Cape Henry in the future, but for now, please join us in applauding their hard work at Cape Henry as we wish them the best of luck.

The 2006 spring season proved to be very strong for the Dolphin athletic teams. Many of our teams finished with a state ranking and made their mark on Cape Henry Collegiate School history. In addition to wins and losses, our athletes represented us well on all of our athletic fields and venues. Let’s begin with the Varsity Baseball Team. Coach John Ingram, a true gem in the baseball community, guided his team to the second best record in Cape Henry Baseball history with a record of 17-6-1 and the Runner-Up Trophy in the TCIS Tournament. Senior Captains Pat Chicoine (Senior Male Athlete of the Year and 1st Team All-TCIS Recipient) and Joe Farmartino provided a solid, lead by example, base for the underclassmen. All-State and 1st Team All TCIS Selection Robert Morey added to his already stellar reputation as one of the top baseball players in the area. 2nd Team All-TCIS Choice Parker Talbert and the remainder of a very promising junior class in Jonathan Whited, Pete Levitt, Coleman Newell, and Chris Perry bring high hopes for another great season for 2007. The Varsity Crew Team, coached by Douglas Kirk and Lynn McGeein, are steering this boat in the right direction bringing home the championship trophy in the Men’s Lightweight Division of the Independent Schools Regatta. Senior Captains Karen Kirk and Mike Mallet led many novice rowers this season along with returners, Amber Templeton, David Sarrett, Taylor Stone, and Clarke Templeton. Madison Marchbank, Jacob Greeen, Jake Jones, Divyah Suresh, Aubrey Northam, Kate Pleasants, ZachFritz Manolio, along with many other newcomers bring aspirations of future regatta success. TCIS Coach of the Year, Phil Stewart, guided his Varsity Golf Team to the first TCIS Championship since 1999. Tournament Medalist Scott Saal had a phenomenal season, along with Senior Captains Brent Landen, Brielle Paolini, and Ben Almond. Freshman standout Kent Ryu will have some big shoes to fill with a strong senior class including Brad Ripley that concluded their golf careers with an impressive record of 11-2. The Varsity Boys Lacrosse Team continues to be a formidable opponent in the conference and in the state. Coach Richard Carrington slated an impressive inaugural season with a record of 11-7, and captured the Runner-Up Trophy in the TCIS Tournament. A roster that includes 15 members of the junior class, including 1st Team TCIS Selections and an impressive tandem midfield in Brandon Faubert (Honorable Mention All-State) and Captain Dan Bain, are destined for great things. Assist wizard, Carter Mavromatis, earned 2nd Team All-TCIS honors feeding the attack of Cole Mason, Micheal Hodeen, and Brooks Bradley. The defense was directed by Senior Captains Clay Tourault (1st Team All TCIS) and Kyle Jaffee who will leave their mark on Dolphin Lacrosse as ’03 State Champions. Returners Alex Elliott, Andrew Snyder, Wes Forehand, Danny Lee, TJ Spera, and Tyler Jacobsen, in addition to the remaining solid roster bring a power packed squad for 2007. Speaking of making a power packed squad, the Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team finished as a State RunnerUp in the first ever, Girls State Lacrosse Tournament. Jen Baker, also TCIS Coach of the Year, brought a team to the field loaded with talent and leaders. Senior Captains Devin Nash (1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-TCIS, Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year), Blake Burlage (2nd Team All-TCIS), and Lauren Turner were amongst one of the strongest senior classes in Lady Dolphin history. Sophomore phenom, Mary Flowers, who seems to take the game to a whole new level, earned 1st Team All-State and1st Team All-TCIS distinction as a sophomore, as well. Junior and Academic Female Athlete of the Year, Morgan Pearman, was also an all-conference selection and led an all-star supporting cast of Emily Cole, Liz Napolitano, Brittany Meyers, Marguerite McNeal, Sarah Potter, Kelsey Scherrer, and Kelly Zoretic. This team earned the first ever TCIS Regular Season Championship and accomplished a lot to be proud of! Cape Henry’s Girls Soccer Legacy finished with a record of 12-5 and advanced to the Final Four of the Inaugural State Tournament. This team took the State Champions to overtime, came up a bit short; but, even in defeat, made us all proud. An all-star Senior Class of Captains Nicole Moore (1st Team AllState, 1st Team All-TCIS) and Anne Birkhead (1st Team All-State , 2nd Team AllTCIS, Female & Senior Athlete of the Year), in addition to Lindsay Weathersby, Kelly Timms, and Ashley Temoche will forever be remembered for their contributions to a soccer dynasty. Brand (1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-TCIS), Cape Henry’s all time leading goal scorer, the athletic play of standout midfielder Libi Henley, the steady play of Jackie Miller, and Kelsey Pick, a solid goalkeeper, to continue the Lady Dolphin Soccer tradition. Our Varsity Girls Softball Team embodies the spirit of which all of our teams could aspire. Being up by ten runs or down by ten runs was often misread due to the constant positive chatter that resonated from the softball field. Captains Casey Scherrer and Shelby Evans represent the epitome of the team concept. Their essence, combined with the softball skills of Junior pitcher Stephanie Grune (2nd Team All-TCIS), Kristen Meredith, Rachel Cross, Katie Pawloski, Kaitlyn Johnson, and Lizzie Wagner, will pay off in years to come. This team graduates no seniors, so the impressive play of 8th grade softball hurler, Rebecca Wheless and newcomer Alyssa Torrech and Danielle Beale bring signs of good things to come for this group next season. Finishing 3rd in the conference and 5th in the state rankings, the Varsity Boys Tennis Team represented Cape Henry not only as a formidable competitor, but also a great group of fine young men. Coach Ray Dayton was more than pleased with his Senior leadership of Captains Chris Fletcher (1st Team All-TCIS) and Chris Burke (Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year). Junior Raj Dhillon, a 2nd Team All-Conference choice, in addition to fellow junior Niraj Patel, also posted strong seasons. 8th and 9th graders Eric Smith and Kevin Hamele provided success from the younger ranks at the varsity level. A record of 8-2 is slated as one of the best in recent years. Coach Sharif Rudolph’s Varsity Track & Field Team finished strong in select events both in the conference and state tournaments. Danny Lampton’s natural captain abilities kept this team steadfast throughout the season. Also, Captain Carina Tate not only brought direction for her team , but also finished 5th in the TCIS Triple Jump competition, and 8th in the State Triple Jump event. Senior Matt Szycher placed 2nd in the TCIS 200M and 6th in the State 100M races. Matt also holds the CHCS record for the 100M and 200M. 8th Grader and long distance expert, Kelli Morrissey finished 3rd in he TCIS 1600M and 10th in the State 1600M event. Jasmine Marshall had an impressive first year with the track team with a 6th place finish in the TCIS Shot Put and a 9th place finish in the State Shot Put. Michelle Karpaitis, Lauren Papineau, Chad McEnroe, Micheal Blanchard, David Blanchard, Andreas Breitenberg-Scavuzzo, Maddy Woodson, and Laura Zendman return a sound team for 2007. We would be remiss if I failed to mention our promising JV programs. Noteworthy, all of these teams finished a bit more polished than they started. The JV Baseball Team, coached by Wes Neubeck '00, played a combination Middle School and JV schedule. Tyler Ballard, Bryan Goldner, Coles Keeter, and Kyle McCammon led their squad with balanced diamond play throughout. Coach Bob Sully’s JV Softball Team, comprised solely of Middle-Schoolers, held their own behind the play of Katelyn Falk, Payton Schaubach, and Heather Mytelka. Coach Kevin deJesus was a force in the JV Tennis circuit with the big swing of Tanner Baine and consistent play of Seth Green, to mention just a few. The JV Boys Lacrosse Team, led by Coach Shep Jordan, developed accordingly along the way and finished the season by playing with a new enthusiasm for the game of lacrosse by the end of the season. Drew Mason and Cole Conrad balanced the attack on the offensive and defensive ends of the field. First year Coach Susan Eichener guided the JV Girls Lacrosse Team, with an instrumental goal to learn and enhance our girls lacrosse program. This team achieved their goal solidly influenced by the play of Kaelyn Smith, Cory Zapatero, and Laura Dail. Coach Alice Meredith recorded one of the strongest JV Golf seasons of recent years with a 2nd place finish in the conference. JV Golf standouts Alex Aspinwall, Jeff Brooks, and Michael Sautter will prove to be more than sufficient contributors to the varsity program in future years. And, the JV Girls Soccer Team, coached by Bob DeManche and Alan Woods were competitive throughout the season 6-3-4 behind the steady play of Rachel Stewart, Kathryn Van Deveer, Meggie Chicoine, Christina Breitenberg-Scavuzzo, Katie Heilig, Jamie Mandell, and Maddie Houck. We also fielded a driven Middle School Boys Lacrosse Team, headed by Coach Jay Jesumah. This team competed to the very end strongly influenced by the skillful play of Cory Mavromatis, Will Mason, and Cecil Ward. To wrap it all up, the Spring Season was packed with great success and a competitive spirit of which we can all be proud. This season marks one of the most successful spring seasons in CHCS history. A special thank you to the Senior Class for all of you earned banners and trophies that will be cherished for years to come. But, most of all, thank you for your personalities and character that continually shine through and remind us all why we play sports, why we coach, and why this work is so worthwhile!

A lumni P resident Welcome to our new alumni, the class of 2006! Take with you all that you gained from your time at Cape Henry and do your best in all of your endeavors. Your class, like most from Cape Henry, is diverse, growing, and above all, filled with the knowledge made available from an institution committed to every graduate’s future. Have fun, and as you celebrate the end of your years of schooling at Cape Henry, take a few moments to celebrate the start of your life-long association with the ever growing family of Cape Henry Alumni. A recap of recent events… This year’s Grand Auction “A Night in Tuscany” witnessed many of our alumni involved in all facets of the evening. Alumni contributed to everything from generously underwriting the event and donating items of significant value to both the silent and live auctions, to those in attendance who raised their paddles high.
Trustee Mike Gianascoli '89, Tom Atherton, Jason Saker, and Trustee Chris Perry '92.
This year’s Golf Tournament at the Cavalier brought beautiful weather and a handful of Alumni to play a beautiful course in support of a worthy cause, Cape Henry Collegiate School. Our first ever Lacrosse/Spring Thing was a great, new event for everyone who came. Even those who were not familiar with the game of lacrosse enjoyed the food and fine weather. Things were even better as both girls and boys teams had dominating wins over the Cox and First Colonial teams.
A few reunion gatherings occurred for the classes of 1990 and 1995. All who returned to the School because of the reunions were astonished and amazed by how the School has transformed in such a relatively short span of time. If you have not been back to visit the School in a few years, I invite you to stop by or call and set a time to take a tour of the facilities. You will be even prouder to mention your alma mater to others after your visit.

To all the college-aged alumni coming home for the summer, please check the website to make sure we have all of your current information - email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses. We lose contact with many alumni through the college years, and we would like to change that trend. While you are at it, inquire about our summer job placement programs. More and more companies are becoming involved and therefore different opportunities are forming. You can try a job that is new or one that may bolster your career in the future. All the companies and jobs have a connection to Cape Henry, so we all benefit. Enjoy your summer and everyone call your classmates, then check in with the School. You never know where Cape Henry Alumni are. They may be in the town in which you’re vacationing or they may be living right across the street! 24 Soundings • SUMMER 2006
