WELCOME Join us as a spirit of fun and excitement fills the halls of Cape Henry Collegiate over the summer months. Campers ages 3-16 will enjoy every aspect of Cape Henry’s beautiful campus, including a passionate teaching staff, high-tech classrooms, a full-service cafeteria, a new outdoor playground, and other fantastic facilities that will make your summer one to remember! Summer will be here before you know it, and we are excited about the 2017 lineup of offerings. We welcome back our favorite, most time-tested camps, and we are thrilled to introduce exciting new programs to Summer at the Cape. Offerings abound in the arts, academics, athletics, sciences, and many different specialty camps that are sure to ignite your interest. Our programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to develop their talents, acquire new skills and knowledge, explore new interests, and, most importantly, HAVE FUN during their summer vacation! Cape Henry Collegiate is the largest independent, college-preparatory school in Virginia Beach. It rests on a 30-acre campus just minutes from the oceanfront. With a 10-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio, emphasis is placed on the core values of community, opportunity, scholarship, and integrity. Cape Henry offers a nationally recognized international studies program, a rigorous and well-rounded academic program, fantastic offerings in visual and performing arts, a competitive athletics program, financial aid, and transportation. Included in this brochure are all of the program descriptions, times, dates, ages, and tuition. Please read everything thoroughly and contact us with any questions you might have. SUMMER PROGRAMS OFFICE The Lower School Office will serve as the Summer Programs Office during the summer months. The Summer Program’s direct dial number is (757) 963-8252. Prior to June 5, please contact the Director of Auxiliary Programs at (757) 963-8241 with questions.

CAMP CANCELLATIONS Cape Henry Collegiate reserves the right to modify or cancel any summer program with insufficient enrollment. All camps must meet minimum enrollment numbers no later than two weeks prior to their start date to proceed. If a program is cancelled by the Summer Programs office, a full refund will be given or may be applied to another camp.

REFUNDS, TRANSFERS, AND WITHDRAWALS A refund will only be given if requested in writing more than two weeks prior to the start of the session in which the camper is enrolled. Fifteen percent (15%) of the camp fee is nonrefundable. Campers withdrawn less than two weeks prior to the start of camp are responsible for the full tuition. Transfers are permissible up to two weeks prior to the start of camp. There are no prorated fees or refunds for campers arriving after the start of the session, leaving before its completion, or missing any time during camp.

HEALTH FORM In accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia law, each camper must provide Cape Henry Collegiate with a copy of the health form MCH-213G before the first day of camp. The completed MCH-213G must include documentation of all age-appropriate immunizations and a physical examination. All documents must include the date of the physical exam, and the examining physician must sign the immunization form. This health form is required for enrollment in all independent and public schools. The school your child attends will have a copy of this form on file. Cape Henry Collegiate students do not need to submit this form for Summer Programs, since it is already on file.

REQUIRED SOCIAL SERVICES PAPERWORK Summer at the Cape specialty and day camps, and the Before- and After-Camp Program are licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services. In accordance with Social Services policy, we are required to document the identity and age of all children enrolled in these programs. Proof of your child’s identity may include a birth certificate or a birth registration card. If your child is not currently an enrolled student at Cape Henry Collegiate, you will need to bring this documentation to the School prior to the start of camp. Athletic camps are not licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services and do not require proof of birth or Virginia School Health Entrance forms.

MEDICAL There will be a Camp Nurse on campus from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital (SVBGH) is one mile from Cape Henry’s campus. Severe emergencies requiring immediate medical attention will be taken to SVBGH either by car or ambulance. If a camper takes medication, a separate form will be sent to the parent for specific instructions and a doctor’s authorization. This form and the medication must be given to the Camp Nurse by the parent/guardian of the camper.

LUNCH A lunch in Café Dolphin is included in all full-day camps unless otherwise noted. If lunch is not included with the camp, you may purchase lunch for $30 per week.

FOOD ALLERGIES Cape Henry Collegiate cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment for all students with severe allergies and is not a food allergen-free school. Our goal is to work towards minimizing the risk of exposure to allergens that pose a threat to those students and to educate the community about their needs.

REGISTRATION Early registration is encouraged. Camp sizes are limited. Payment in full, including extended care, is due with your registration. You must register and pay for a full week of camp even if the child will not be there the entire week. Your child is not considered registered for a camp unless full payment has been received. Registrations must be completed online. No phone or faxed registration will be accepted. If you have any questions regarding Summer Programs, please contact the Director of Auxiliary Programs at (757) 963-8241.

SPECIAL PICK-UP DURING CAMP HOURS Any child leaving camp during camp hours must be picked up in the Lower School Office by a parent, guardian, or family member. Advance notice is greatly appreciated. Please inform the Director of Auxiliary Programs and your child’s camp instructor in writing/email of early departures.

ABSENCE NOTIFICATION If your camper is going to be absent, please call and leave a voicemail message at (757) 963-8252. Please do not forget to include the date of the absence, your child’s name, and the specific camp in which he or she is enrolled.

DAY CAMPS FOR AGES 3 - 11

Looking for an exciting summer experience? Join our summer day camps to experience endless fun and engagement. Spend your summer playing on Cape Henry’s brand new, state-of-the-art playground. Acquaint yourself with friends from the past or meet new friends as you continue to grow and develop. Our Summer at the Cape Day Camps focus on fun while also bridging the learning gap between school years. No matter your age, your days will be filled with academic engagement to swim lessons, craft making to sports and games, science experiments to fun-filled field trips, and much more. All Day Camps are led by full-time teachers at Cape Henry Collegiate or teachers in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Each has multiple years as a member of our school community. All full-day campers receive a fully serviced, well-balanced lunch from Café Dolphin, and all full- and half-day campers receive a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack and drink. Our Summer at the Cape Day Camps are licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services. Little Dolphins Day Camp: Ages 3 and 4 (Prekindergarten) Sandfiddlers Day Camp: Ages 5 and 6 (Rising Kindergarten, Transition, and Grade 1) Dolphins Day Camp: Ages 7 and 8 (Rising Grades 2 and 3) Sharks Day Camp: Ages 9 - 11 (Rising Grades 4-6) SUMMER LEARNING: Day campers spend time each day on specific weekly themes, digging into age-appropriate topics like America’s National Parks, the Natural Wonders of the World, Disney and Star Wars, outdoor adventure and camping, Dr. Seuss, and more. Twice a week they will immerse themselves in Cape Henry’s science labs, working on experiments and exercises to learn and test the theme of the week. In addition to these wonderful and creative topics, students will spend time with age-appropriate reading, writing, and math while having the opportunity to work on summer academic assignments for the upcoming school year. EXERCISE AND FUN: Campers take part in daily freeplay and structured activities on all of Cape Henry’s fantastic facilities. Cape Henry boasts a spacious, air-conditioned field house with P.E. equipment and supplies for every game and activity. A turf field and multiple grass athletic fields host countless outdoor games, and a brand new playground caters to the imagination of all age groups. SWIMMING: Partnered with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation, Day Camp groups travel via bus to the Great Neck Recreation Center (Dolphins and Sharks) and to Seatack Recreation Center (Little Dolphins and Sandfiddlers) twice a week for age-appropriate swim lessons. Lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified swim instructors while supervised by American Red Cross certified lifeguards. The swim curriculum is developed and taught by the Aquatic Staff of Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation. Campers travel to and from swim lessons with their lead teachers, and their lead teachers remain poolside throughout each swim lesson.

SPECIALTY & DAY CAMPS FIELD TRIPS: Campers take part in a unique field trip every week of the summer. Join us as we go bowling at Pinboy’s, visit the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, jump around at the indoor Bounce House facility, travel to our local state parks, enjoy a hike in the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, and more. These fun-filled experiences take the campers off campus to some of the area’s most desirable locations. Day Camp teachers and staff members accompany the students on these fully supervised trips. BEFORE- AND AFTER-CAMP CARE PROGRAM

This program is a service provided for parents who require extended care for children, rising Prekindergarten through Grade 5, before and after regular Summer Program hours. The exceptional staff plans outdoor play, craft projects, and much more each day. Before and After Care is available for the duration of our Summer at the Cape schedule, beginning on Monday, June 5 and ending on Friday, August 11. An afternoon snack is provided for the campers. All children must be toilet trained.

Do you love your doll and spend time dreaming of new ways to style and accessorize? Do you and your friends dream up new worlds with your dolls, creating tea parties, going to the beach, or catching the great new movie in the theaters? If so, this camp is for you. Make accessories, read stories, and learn all about the history of American Girl dolls. In this camp, you will design and build your own doll house using boxes and reclaimed materials, and you will find new, inventive ways to make accessories and enhance your doll’s fashion. ART ADVENTURES: ARCHITECTURE!

Calling all builders and designers! It’s time to create the next great building, aircraft, boat, and more. In this camp you will build and design different forms of architecture that capture your imagination and are unique to your point of view. BABYSITTING

Would you like to become a certified babysitter? An instructor from the Tidewater Center for Life Support will instruct girls and boys ages 9 to 14 in the skills of being a confident sitter. This three-day camp will instruct campers in childcare skills, including feeding and bathing a baby, changing a diaper, infant and child CPR, basic first aid, talking to potential clients, and much more. At the end, you will be awarded a certificate and card that you can show to prove you are a certified babysitter! Maximum of 15 campers at each session–so sign up early!

This exciting camp enters its third year after two exciting summers on the Bay! The Chesapeake Bay Adventure Camp offers the opportunity to see and experience the Chesapeake Bay environmental region in all of its glory. The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is the largest estuary in North America! Explore this unique Watershed environment by both land and water through a variety of exciting outdoor adventures each day. Hike historic trails that buffer the land from the beautiful coastal waters of the Bay; go fishing in the Chesapeake Bay; explore the local environment from the perspective of the newest, most environmentally smart buildings and programs in the world; and challenge yourself on the obstacles at The Adventure Park! Chess is renowned for improving creativity, the power of concentration, critical thinking skills, memory and retention, and overall academic performance. Chess has also been shown to augment problem-solving capabilities, provide cultural enrichment, advance intellectual maturity, and enhance self-esteem. Not to mention, chess is fun! COOKING FUN

It’s time to whip up some fun and something good to eat! Campers will enjoy the opportunity to test their culinary skills while learning how to work in the kitchen, use measuring cups and spoons, and prepare healthy snacks and tasty treats. Creativity abounds as campers use their senses to create new dishes and tasty cuisine. Your child will love a newfound independence in the kitchen, and you will enjoy the benefits of your child’s culinary skills– there will be plenty to share and bring home! DANCE FOR BEGINNERS

This one-week camp teaches young dancers about dance terminology, beginning technique, and introduces them to the fun and exciting world of dance! The camp includes ballet, tap, and jazz. Dancers will also enjoy a daily dance education time during which they learn about additional dance styles, read exciting dance stories, and watch amazing dance videos. Dance Intensive is offered to students 8 years old and up. It is intended for those who are strongly driven to excel in dance and wish to improve their technical skills, muscle strength, and power. Travel back in time to the Mesozoic Era where we will explore the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous time periods. We will dig deep into our study as we become paleontologists and discover different species of dinosaurs. DRONE FLYING: SEARCH AND RESCUE

Drone search and rescue is a rapidly evolving necessity for first responders around the world, adding a new layer of solutions to help people and save lives. Participants will learn how to fly and code drones in order to rely on their rescue team to locate and rescue victims to safety. Into the Elements has an environmental emphasis as kids learn about our planet and how to keep it healthy and “green.” No matter the weather, part of each day will be spent outside exploring the beauty of Cape Henry’s campus as well as having exciting experiences in our local habitat. Campers will spend time in the CHC Butterfly Garden, helping to prepare it for the arrival of Monarchs in the fall. Students will learn about vegetable gardening through composting, planting, harvesting, and weeding. A vegetable basket picked by each camper will go home with them on Friday. We will go beyond the concept of recycling to understand the impact our choices have on the planet. Oil paint is a beautiful and versatile medium. A painting foundation will be presented that can easily be built upon for pursuits beyond this class. In this camp from Youth Digital, kids will create a video game just like they do in real Game Design studios. They will use Unity®, an industry-standard Game Design software, and C#, a professional programming language, to build and code their game from scratch. As campers code new features in their game, they will learn the most important concepts in programming, including if-then and conditional statements, logical operators, variables, methods, parameters, object types, and loops. They will also learn the fundamental techniques of Game Design, such as navigating and operating within a three-dimensional environment, utilizing prefabs, generating custom particles, simulating artificial intelligence, and more. DRIVER’S EDUCATION: CLASSROOM

This course is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of the fundamentals of driving and to foster responsible attitudes and driving behaviors. Course content follows the Virginia State Board of Education, which includes linking visual skills, space management, and balanced vehicle movements to risk-reducing driving strategies. Significant attention is given to risk awareness, driver alertness, and responsible actions relative to occupant protection devices, positive interactions with other roadway users, and the physical and psychological conditions that affect driver performance. Students will use knowledge, processes, and skills learned in driver education to help them become competent users of the highway transportation system. This program is focused on exploring the many facets of leading a fulfilling, healthy, and productive lifestyle. At this exciting, intense, and difficult stage of life, we will learn and discuss serious social, emotional, physical and societal concerns. Topics include: illegal substances, growth and development, physical activity, nutrition, preventing violence and abuse, and mental and emotional development. Students will also complete the American Heart Association’s curriculum for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Classroom Health sessions run from 8:00 a.m. - noon on Monday through Friday of each week, and office hours are available from noon - 1:00 p.m. for extra help.

The All Sports Camp is designed to provide campers with a fundamental skill set for each of the major sports as well as some lifetime activities. THE 27TH ANNUAL VIRGINIA ALL-STAR SOCCER CAMP

The longest running and most enjoyable co-ed soccer camp in Virginia Beach returns for its 27th year of camp instruction. We take great pride in offering the best soccer camp experience in Hampton Roads. Our facilities include four plush green soccer fields, six air-conditioned courts for indoor soccer, an air-conditioned auditorium with large-screen projection for rest and film sessions, and a spacious cafeteria serving hot lunch daily. Our camp staff is comprised of highly trained professional, college, and high school players and coaches who are positive role models and understand our camp philosophy of learning the game of soccer in a clean, safe, and enjoyable atmosphere. Cape Henry Collegiate wrestling is excited to offer two unique, five-day wrestling camps. The camps will be held in the spacious, air-conditioned Clarke Family Wrestling Room. CHC wrestling camps are founded on a developmental and competitive approach that centers on technique, competition, and games. Head Coach Jack Effner is committed to the total development of each camper. Campers will not only learn how to wrestle, they will have fun and be challenged to improve. The Volleyball Camp covers all aspects of the game of volleyball with an emphasis on fundamentals and game situation play. The camp welcomes players of all ability levels, from beginner to experienced, and players will be grouped by skill to better meet the individual needs of each participant. The technique and skills taught in this camp are designed to provide and improve upon the foundation that allows participants to develop into high level athletes in the future. All basic skills will be covered including passing, setting, hitting, serving, defense, blocking, and offensive and defensive systems. EVERYDAY YOGA: FINDING FOCUS AND BEING PRESENT

While many people are familiar with the physical benefits of yoga practice, few are aware of the many benefits of yoga that extend beyond the mat. Yoga teaches so much more than just the body. During this week-long program, we will practice yoga each day, incorporating different themes for each daily practice. We will explore how yoga can help us manage stress, focus better, and bring awareness to all that we do, whether it’s on the soccer field or in the classroom. By the end of the week, both your body and your mind will feel more agile, and you will be familiar with several techniques that will not only assist you in dealing with physical and mental challenges, but will also be easily adaptable to your daily lives.
