Welcome toMyTattooInc

This edition is packed with cool artpieces and this issue’s theme is art related movies. I have tried to select both from the black and grey and coloredstyles.

This time we continue to show a nice selection of our previous models under the Woba model revival section. Meanwhile we are now working up a nice portfolio for the future editions and prepare the most appreciated model of the year competition.

Last issue we ran into a challenge since our supposed convention in Aberdeen was late cancelled. We had to find awesome material in the eleventh hour, but i think we succeednicely.

Last but not least i will sent a huge thank you to our awesome team working behind the mag. Bart, Mike, Rene, Kamila and Mark. What a fantastic team. Also a huge thanks to our marketing team in Germany and Denmark.

I hope you will enjoy this issue and your most welcome to Spread the work / spread the ink.

Yours sincerely

The next issue will be ready for you all in December!

The online magazine will always be a free magazine.

Enjoy!

BIG LONDON

When it was announced that the International London Tattoo Convention would not be happening again, an inevitable gap appeared. It’s important to remember that Alexandra Palace’s Tattoo Freeze is still present in the convention calendar, but it was felt that a central convention was still needed to feed the public’s hunger for all things tattoo. Following in the footsteps of ‘London’ was never going to be easy and there were inevitably going to be comparisons. But, having spent the weekend at the first Big London Tattoo Show, I can honestly report that the organisers, Total Tattoo magazine and Rocket Events, have truly pulled this out of the bag.

20 PAGE

TATTOO SHOW

The Big London Tattoo Show was held at the ExCel centre, in the London Docklands area. Although modern, practical and somewhat plain in comparison to its predecessor, ExCel turned out to be an ideal choice. In addition to an airport nearby and other transport links a short walk away, the area featured hotels within stumbling distance and catering facilities within the foyer area. The venue was clean and large enough to give space to both artists and public visiting the show without too much crowding. The venue wasn’t completely devoid of character either, there were little nods to the city throughout with a seating and catering area which was complete with a red double decker bus that also acted as a main bar. Either side of the main stage hung large ‘total tattoo’ and ‘Big London Tattoo Show’ banners, which framed the area well.

21 PAGE

Tickets for the show started at £25 in advance, with free entry for children. As well as live tattooing, the entry price included unlimited turns on the free fairground rides and vintage pinball machines, free poster printing and access to art and car displays. The event had clearly been advertised across printed and social media, as the queues on Saturday opening were eye-popping! Whilst it looked impressive, this is something the organisers need to address for next year, as it took considerable time to get people through the doors at the beginning. After the initial rush, there was a noticeable, steady flow of people coming in throughout the day. The organisers had also offered vouchers for half price tickets to local tattoo studios who had not been able to attend, promoting the support and attendance of the tattoo community.

An open plan area of art and exhibitions nestled amongst the tattooing areas, organised by Andy ‘Yogixiii’. Many of the exhibitions came from the artists tattooing at the show and reflected the varied styles and methods of tattooing; from happy, joyful doodles by Tim (Pristonstyle tattoo), to the hyper-realistic paintings of Toni Moore, every exhibition fitted perfectly into the atmosphere. It was also refreshing to see the exhibition open up to artists who are part of the tattoo world but not actually tattooing; for example, Dan Noake’s traditional, primitive pyrography which was complemented alongside the woodcut prints of tattooist Sam Rivers. A highlight for many tattoo history and geometric fans were the canvases from Xed le Head. These works have been created since he was forced to retire from tattooing due to ill health. The fact that these were only a sample of what he’s created is impressive to say the least, and hopefully the public will be able to see more of them in person in the future. The art continued towards the stage area, where the art group Paris68 had materials set up where people could print their own London Tattoo Show t-shirts and posters. Aside from being helpful in the art and printing areas, the guys were intelligent, friendly and made good company for putting the world to right.

23 PAGE

At the centre of the convention was a display of hot rod and vintage cars. Some were owned by tattooists, but many were brought by people who had never experienced a tattoo show. Whilst there were only a few cars, the feedback was impressive and it gives scope for further expansion in this area which is beneficial to all involved. The location of traders framing this area gave space for shoppers to switch easily between snapping pictures of cars and snapping up bargains. The location of a temporary tattoo booth also proved a hit in this area!

The entertainment featured a combination of sideshow and performance acts which occurred over two stages. Throughout the day, the waltzers and dodgems flashed and span, and people played on vintage pinball machines. Familiar crowd-pleasers such as the Fuel Girls drew in the audience with their new routines, and acts such as Dr Diablo mesmerised punters with sideshow tricks. The sheer size of the venue meant that any screams, shouts, flames or other noises didn’t disrupt the tattooists, as the entertainment and bar areas were suitably away from the tattooing area. The only disadvantage from this was during the competitions, as the commentary from the Tattoo Show’s Paul Talbot and Total Tattoo’s Perry Rule didn’t travel across the room. The duo had never compered tattoo competitions together, let alone on such an immense scale.

24 PAGE

Their combination of interviewing, commentary and humour worked well with the crowd – think Gogglebox, but with tattoos. This complemented the competition system where esteemed judges awarded tokens to contestants, with the winner being declared the person with the highest number of tokens. This method avoided the drag of waiting for marks to be tallied backstage and seeing all the tattoos for each category lined up onstage was a fantastic opportunity to see some completed work from across the weekend and celebrate the vast styles and originality that tattooists are experimenting with. The judges worked well together in their approach and expertise also, with notable figures such as Nikole Lowe, Grace Neutral and Neil Bass, amongst others, headlining the decisions.

The Big London Tattoo Show had big boots to fill; not only have they worn them in, they’ve firmly stomped their footsteps into the convention scene. Roll on 2023, I’ll certainly be first in the queue.

If someone asked me what is “comedy metal” I would probably said “Eeeehhh, maybe Bloodhound Gang?”. Recently some more “comedy metal” bands popped up on the scene, like Psychostick, but too me there is one that stands out. I’ll give you a quick recipe: put some metal riffs (from all metal subgenres), add a bit of steel drums, maracas, and other unusual instruments, pour in some grind-core drumming, a cup of growls, snarls, pig squeals and actually singing, wait for a little bit and…BOOM! You have Big Dumb Face. Big Dumb Face is an American band formed in 1998 by brothers Scott and Wes Borland (yes, Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit fame).

Their first album, Duke Lion fights the Terror!!, met with some mixed reviews, as this was so “out there” that a lot of people could not wrap their heads around it. In 2017 they released their second album ‘Where’s Duke Lion…He’s dead.’ On this album their continued in the same vein as before – mixing genres, writing surreal lyrics, and generally having a lot of creating fun with this project.

The most recent release ‘Christmas In The Cave Of Dagoth’ from 2021, bring you the classic Christmas songs like “Your grandma got your khaki slacks”, “The possession of Leslie Bibb”, and “Necrotic Feast” among others. Big Dumb Face is something people call “an acquired taste”. You can learn to love it (or you can love it from the get-go if, like me, you are a bit weird) or you will hate it. Initially listening to Big Dumb Face can leave you confused, scared, it can induce psychedelic episodes and make you wet your bed. But once you get into the swing of it you will become mesmerized by the whole experience. The band made a video for a song “Duke Lion” – have a look, have a laugh, have a mental breakdown. Currently only the Borland brothers are still in the band – will they keep making this weird sounds? We’ll see…

When thinking about music and Australia most rockers and metals heads would probably think about AC/DC. But the Aussies got a lot more to offer. A few years ago I came across one of their offerings, namely Twelve Foot Ninja.

The band formed in 2008 in Melbourne. They’ve released a couple of EPs which gave them some recognition, praise and awards. In 2012 they released they debut album ‘Silent Machine’. An interesting fact – each song tells a story of a lonely ninja fighting to restore balance in the world and is accompanied by a comic book. Since releasing their first album the band toured extensively around Australia, Europe and US.

Foot Ninja

In 2016 their second album ‘Outlier’ came out, on which the band continued their musical journey. After that they kept touring, selling out most of their shows in the UK. In 2019 their bassist left the band, but they continued in with a new line-up and in 2021 they released they third album – ‘Vengeance”. At this point in time the band is on an indefinite hiatus due to departure of their lead singer. But what can you expect listening to Twelve Foot Ninja. Well, expect the unexpected. Heavy, djent-like riffs mixed with jazz/funk parts; growling, screaming and melodic singing; double-bass drumming with funk rhythms. These guys know what there are doing musically and despite this being a mix of genres it all flaws beautifully and makes a nice, coherent and cohesive whole. You should also check out their videos which are also something else – short movies rather than videoclips, with a lot of humor.
