Step on it, Ine! Gi gass, Ine

This is the first volume in a new series of picture books by Tore Renberg and Øyvind Torseter. Ine and Hasse are sister and brother. Ine is the older one and can fix everything. Hasse doesn’t say much, only «yes» or «tractor». They are going to cut down a tree in the forest and Ine carries the axe, of course. Soon, all the forest animals turn up to find out what’s going on. The text is playful and charming, with overtones of jingles. The beautiful illustrations are based on cut-and-fold technique. One of the most exciting picture books in 2010! Rights sold to: Denmark (Rosinante&Co) and Sweden (Kabusa)

‘Perfect! … A beautiful and clever picture book. … Words and illustrations are in close dialogue throughout the book. The style, both verbal and visual, is innovative, poetic, playful. Renberg/Torseter make a good team…’ Dagbladet

Last year we met Ine and Hasse in Gi gass, Ine! This year we meet them once again in a new book, He he, Hasse.

▶ Pic ture Book s

Tore Renberg and Øyvind Torseter

Ine and Hasse have a plan. They want to blow up the big stone on the ground. The one that gets in the way of everything. But for that they will need some dynamite. They begin by asking the elk. But he doesn’t have any left over. Then they ask the bear and owls and others they meet. But they don’t have any in stock, apart from the badger, and he is rather grumpy, particularly when he’s woken in the middle of the day. Tore Renberg’s words and Øyvind Torseter’s collage prints complement one another beautifully.

Tore Renberg (1972–) published a short book of prose in 1995 called Sovende floke, which was awarded with the Tarjei Vesaas' prize for first books. Since then he has published three novels for adults, one collection of shorter prose pieces and five books for children. Much of his work has been translated into other languages. Gaute Heivoll and Line Halsnes

The Boat in the Stars Båten mellom stjernene

Autumn has come and it is getting darker. Line and Dad go rowing. Maybe they’ll spot the beaver that Line has only heard people talk about? The starry sky is above them and beneath them deep water. They have to stay quite still for a while. It could be that the beaver is heading their way just now. In Båten mellom stjernene, Heivoll continues his exploration of relationships between children and grown-ups, and of how children comprehend death. The setting is a poetically rich landscape of forest and lake, where the action takes place at night – just as in Himmelen bak huset, his acclaimed first book for children. A child stands on the threshold to the unknown, which both tempts and threatens.

Gaute Heivoll (1978–) produced his first story for children in 2008; Himmelen bak huset. The critics were very enthusiastic about his book, which was subsequently translated into Polish. Heivoll is also a much admired writer of books for adults.

Line Halsnes (1981–) trained in illustration at the Norwich School of Art and Design. She is a partner in the working collective Kobolt Design. Båten mellom stjernene is her first picture book.

‘... one of this fall’s best picture books.’ Aftenposten

▶ BACK LIST Heaven Behind the House

Himmelen bak huset Jon’s mum has passed away. Nonetheless, she always comes by to say goodnight to him. Then one evening she does not come. Jon becomes frightened and cannot sleep. Fortunately Jon’s dad has a clever idea. He ties a long red piece of string around his big toe and gives the end to Jon, so that he can just give it a tug if he gets frightened. Later during the night Jon suddenly wakes up. He carefully tugs on the string. But no one comes. Cautiously Jon follows the red string out of the house, across the field and into the forest. And unexpected things start to happen.

Come along and join us in the fantastic world of Thorbjørn Egner! 2012 marks the 100 years anniversary since Thorbjørn Egner's birth. No other books have left such an impression on children growing up in Norway as these books have; the songs, the texts and the characters have become national institutions. And because Thorbjørn Egner was both the illustrator and the writer, the relationship between the pictures and texts is bound in a very special way. Very few authors get closer to the child’s imagination than Egner does. Karius og Baktus has also been immortalized in Ivo Caprino’s puppet film, and a full-scale Cardamom Town has been built at Kristiansand Zoo. Not only are Egner’s stories performed on stage in many countries, his books have, to date, been translated into 20 languages. And despite being published more than 50 years ago, they are still as popular as ever.

‘The brilliance of Egner comes from his ability to tell his stories in such a way that children can understand and fantasize about them. The fantastic and adventurous tales are stamped with a naïve and authentic label.’ Tordis Ørjasæter on Egner’s authorship Thorbjørn Egner´s books are sold to: china, denmark, faroe island, finland, france, germany, hungary, iceland, israel, italy, japan, korea, latvia, the netherlands, poland, romania, russia, sweden, turkey and usa

Loppy Rhymes Illustrated by Bendik Kaltenborn

Ingvild H. Rishøi, author of the children’s book Unbrakomonsteret as well as two collections of short stories, is back with the collection of poetry Pling i bollen. This time around she has had some help from the award-winning illustrator Bendik Kaltenborn; together they have created a universe within itself, where stones on a sloping mountainside can end up in intense discussion with one another, and a dachshund can make friends with a salmon without raising eyebrows. Rishøi’s rhymes gesture teasingly towards the genre’s great masters, such as Inger Hagerup and André Bjerke, whilst simultaneously showing great respect for their influence. First and foremost, the author has created poems for a new generation. Some are touching and tranquil, most are wild and wonderful, and what binds them all is their display of a seldomseen linguistic ingenuity.

Ingvild H. Rishøi (1978–) is one of the editors of the journal Avsagd Hagle. She also writes

fiction for adults.

Bendik Kaltenborn (1980–) is an award winning designer and illustrator with an education from Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm, and has a BA in Visual Communication at The National Academy of the Arts in Oslo.

Jenny reads about Johanne and her fate in a newspaper, and decides to send Johanne a letter. This is the beginning of a long correspondence between the two girls, reproduced in the novel. She is also given a piece of jewellery that used to belong to her mother and which she must wear with pride, her father writes. Horses and Secrets: Trouble Trøbbel

In an old box, Linn finds a letter that her mother wrote to her before she went away, but that makes everything even worse. Secretly going out riding on Magic Moon is the best thing is Linn’s life. Then, one day when they’re out in the forest, Linn receives an anonymous message: «Keep hidden, someone is in the barn.»

Christine Mysen

Horses and Secrets: Bad News Triste nyheter

Magic Moon is no longer a secret and Linn puts him into a paddock to let him run for a while. While she stands there, the Shadow turns up. He tells Linn how smart and kind her mother was, how well he knew her and how, indeed, he had never seen anyone ride so well. «Shame that she ruined everything,» he added harshly, his cold eyes staring straight ahead. «Ruined? How?» Linn stammered. «Her sister.» The reply was short and sharp, like the flick of a whip.
