Despite an increase in vaccine acceptance rate all over the country, elderlies in the town of Placer in Surigao del Norte are still hesitant to get vaccinated, Municipal Mayor Jovymarie Villazon said on Wednesday, July 28. But barangay health workers continue to spread awareness about the COVID-19 vaccines and the ongoing vaccination rollout by diligently conducting a house-to-house campaign. The mayor said this made the situation more manageable now. “People had a lot of speculations and doubts and they had varying opinions on the vaccines because of what they heard from the news. They are guided by our municipal health officer,” the lady mayor said during her guesting at the Network Briefing News with Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Martin Andanar. She also cited the participation of nurses of the Nurse Deployment Project (NDP) in the success of the campaign in encouraging their senior citizens. Mayor Villazon believes the use of social media has also boosted their efforts in encouraging its citizens,
especially those who are part of the eligible population. However, the case is different for the town’s youth who are reported to remain hesitant because of fake news plaguing social media. “We know that some of the news we find in our social media are fake, which is why most of our youth remain hesitant in receiving the jabs,” said Brgy. Magsaysay Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Chairperson Kent Bryan Salubre. Nonetheless, the youth leader echoed their local government’s call for getting the vaccines as a way to get extra protection from the virus. “Please, please let us all get vaccinated not only for ourselves but also for our loved ones.” (DMNR/PIA-Caraga)
